Wood has many significant advantages as a cost effective, versatile, highperforming and truly sustainable building material that can be used in a broad range of applications. Construction struggles continue as new work dips to a five year low The value of new construction contracts in May reached £4.5 billion, a decrease of almost ten per cent compared to April and the lowest amount for over five year. The two largest sectors in construction; residential and infrastructure, both saw a decline as the industry continues its slump this year so far. The latest edition of the Economic & Construction Market Review from industry analysts Barbour ABI highlights levels of construction contract values awarded across Great Britain. The largest project by value across the month was the £130 million Wembley Stadium Station housing development. The residential sector saw a

dip in activity of 5.7 per cent compared to the previous month but still managed to claim the top spot as May’s largest project by value.

Whilst it’s encouraging that the industrial and education sectors saw contract values increase, the deficit was too large to make up the shortfall, with both housing and infrastructure continuing in their slump.”

Northern Ireland construction workers’ mental wellbeing targeted for improvement as Mates in Mind launches education initiative The charity Mates in Mind has today announced that it will be delivering a series of educational sessions in a bid to start raising awareness, address the stigma of poor mental health and improve positive mental wellbeing amongst Northern Ireland’s construction workforce. The issue of mental ill-health in the UK construction sector is a significant concern, with over a third of workers having experience some condition in the past year. Almost a quarter of workers consider leaving the industry due to mental health-related problems, which is exacerbated by a prevailing belief that employers are neither able to recognise or address these problems. Furthermore, the UK construction industry suffers from rates of suicide that are higher than any other industry sector, a fact compounded further by Northern Ireland’s already high rate of suicide compared to other parts of the UK & Republic or Ireland, which leaves its workers at potentially even greater risk.

This is achieved by creating a culture built on an understanding of what good mental health looks like. Chichester College’s carpentry course benefits from donation of materials

Leadership – in collaboration with the Workplace Health Leadership Group (NI) and working with delivery partner, Inspire Knowledge and Leadership. CITB (NI) are providing initial funding for this kick start initiative, and offering: (a) twenty half-day training sessions, (b) a two-day mental health first aid training course that will lay the foundations for improving mental health and (c) two sessions specifically tailored for board members. On completion of the sessions, delegates will also have access to 24/7 telephone counselling support. As a result, a cross section of around 400 people in Northern Ireland’s construction sector will be provided with the information, tools and techniques to spot the signs of poor mental health and learn how to guide their colleagues towards appropriate support. The sessions will focus on: • Getting construction workers thinking and talking about mental health; • Raising awareness of mental health literacy; • Reducing stigma around mental ill health and give attendees confidence in guiding people towards appropriate support and • Recognising how mangers’ behaviours can affect workers’ wellbeing

The Chichester and Bognor Regis branches of Covers have donated materials and kitchen units to help students studying carpentry and joinery as part of the company’s new sponsorship agreement with Chichester College. The timber and builders’ merchant, which has depots in Quarry Lane, Chichester and Station Yard, Bognor Regis, is a long-term supporter of the college having been involved for many years, including sponsoring three awards at the college’s Construction Prize Giving in June 2017. The new sponsorship agreement will continue the work Covers does to encourage and inspire students hoping to undertake a career in the timber and construction trades.

Leading North East construction lawyer chairs national conference A leading regional construction lawyer has become the first North East based solicitor in recent years to chair the prestigious Construction Law Conference held in London. Attended by the UK’s most prominent construction lawyers, Keith Bishop was chosen to chair the national conference for his strong specialist expertise. Keith, who heads the construction team at Newcastlebased commercial law firm Muckle LLP, is the first North East lawyer in recent years to chair the high profile conference. ‘Construction: Shaping New Law into Solution – Focused Advice For Your Clients’ was held at the Caledonian Club, London, on Wednesday 27th June. The conference posted 13 ‘thorny’ questions which were answered directly by fives QCs and two solicitors of ‘outstanding ability’. Keith opened the conference with a short address, offering insight on shaping new law into solution-focused advice for clients, before chairing the debate on a series on construction industry issues.

Clara Hope, conference director at even organisers White Paper, said: “Chairing the conference is an incredibly important role, due to the exceptional calibre of expert speakers we had, including fives QCs. It was a high profile and well attended conference and we needed a strong and highly experienced specialist to challenge the panel and help shape the debate. Keith has a vast amount of practical knowledge and experience, and a great strategic eye, so he was a superb choice to be chair.” Keith Bishop, head of construction at Muckle LLP, added: “It was a tremendous honour to be asked to chair the conference. I’ve done a few presentations but this is the first time I’ve been asked to chair, so I was flattered and a little surprised.Usually, the conference is chaired by senior engineers and architects or by someone from a London law firm, but to my knowledge there hasn’t been a North East lawyer as chair before. “Muckle LLP is a national law firm working from one, single office in Newcastle and it is encouraging to see us continue to be considered alongside other national players in the sector.

We discussed how lawyers can best advise clients on legislation and how it can impact their business, as well as finding solutions to real problems. With the impact of Brexit still to be determined, uncertainty about how the industry fits into the current economic climate and the collapse of Carillion, for example, construction is quite a difficult market to be in. These really are significant challenges that led to an exciting and though provoking debate and one which was a great privilege to be part of.”

Construction businesses need to start making changes now to beat Brexit blues Midland Pallet Trucks is urging construction businesses to look at how small changes could help them tackle the challenges of Brexit now in order to provide some security in the future. Recent figures show that despite an improvement in activity, many firms still have a gloomy outlook when it comes to the future. The recently published May 2017 construction purchasing managers’ index (PMI) showed a slight improvement in activity. However, this was linked to better weather conditions allowing firms to clear a backlog of work rather than books boasting new work. As a result, the increased activity wasn’t reflected in confidence, with many businesses fearing uncertainty related to Brexit would further slow down the sector. Another key Brexit concern is accessibility to employees, with firms worrying there will be skills shortages without access to the EU labour market. Phil Chesworth, Managing Director of

Midland Pallet Trucks, said: “While at first glance, the construction PMI suggests an improvement for the sector, there’s actually a lot going on beneath the service. With Brexit doom and gloom clear to see, businesses really need to start taking steps to ensure they’re in a good position, whatever the outcome of the negotiations. From taking the time to put in place staff retention strategies to investing in solutions that mean general tasks can be completed quicker, there are plenty of options for firms.” While business clamour to get ready for post-Brexit economy, Midland Pallet Trucks is also reminding firms not to neglect equipment and health and safety

commitments. The business, which sells a range of pallet trucks to meet differing company needs, explains that investment in the right equipment cannot only significantly cut the number of workplace injuries but saves companies money too, both in terms of a reduction in lost days to employee illness and due to a boost in productivity. Chesworth added, “It’s important to consider how the right equipment can provide essential support for employees and help them to get the job done as efficiently as possible. Despite all the uncertainty politically and economically, businesses shouldn’t be deterred from planning for the future.”

Footage captures challenging A47 bridge repairs GRAHAM’s Highways Director, Dave Brown, has praised his team’s “technical expertise” following the repair of two accident damaged bridges on the A47 in Norfolk.

PARK 66 BUCKS THE RETAIL AND INDUSTRIAL TREND SLADEN Estates and Peveril Securities have commenced the construction of a mixed retail and industrial unit scheme at Park 66, Pilsworth, Bury. The scheme will see Home Bargains, The Food Warehouse, Costa Coffee and KFC open their doors for trading in Spring 2019 and a further 8,790 sq ft of retail space made available in unit sizes from 1,250 sq ft. “We are delighted to see this brownfield site being redeveloped with retail and much needed industrial units,” said Nigel Jones, development director of Sladen Estates. “We have secured a strong tenant line up in a tough retail market and are encouraged by the keen interest we have in the remaining retail units.” The four industrial units, which range from 9,075 sq ft up to 24,212 sq ft, are being developed on a speculative basis and will

be ready for occupation in March 2019. “We knew that there would be keen interest in the industrial space, as there is limited supply of these size units, but with one already under offer and another shortly to be placed into solicitors’ hands, reality has exceeded expectation,” added Jones. The industrial units will be developed to a high specification and will be available on a leasehold and freehold basis. Avison Young and CBRE are appointed as agents on the industrial units with LSH, CPS and Knight Frank retained on the retail. Sladen Estates and Peveril Securities are experienced in delivering high quality developments throughout the UK across a range of sectors and have a development pipeline of circa £800 million.

A time-lapse video has captured the painstaking work, which shows two 28-metrelong beams, each weighting ten tonnes, being lifted into position on the bridges at the Saddlebow interchange in Kings Lynn.

The restorative programme was necessary following damage incurred by an over-height vehicle. The £3.1m project began last October and was completed in May 2018. It was delayed slightly as a crack was unexpectedly uncovered on one of the bridge decks. The scheme involved jacking

Balfour Beatty completes £28.5 million Dundee Railway Station and Hotel Balfour Beatty, the international infrastructure group, today announces that it has successfully completed works to the £28.5 million Dundee railway station, on behalf of Dundee City Council. Balfour Beatty utilised its extensive experience in the construction of complex projects on a live, operational railway, to deliver a new station and concourse, hotel development and associated retail facilities with minimal disruption to train services. the bridge, the hydro demolition of the bridge deck and the removal of the steel edge beam before the damaged beams on the bridge were replaced. The deck was subsequently concreted. “This was a very challenging project and one, which demonstrated the full range of technical expertise of our team,” said Dave. “The footage in the video showcases the complexity of the work involved and how our team rose to the challenge. We are pleased to have

supported Highways England in improving road safety while also improving journey quality for drivers.” The repair work to the bridges at the Saddlebow interchange was part of a wider £18m package of work, consisting of approximately 70 different schemes, to maintain the A47 in Norfolk. GRAHAM has also carried out similar works in Cambridgeshire and Suffolk. Highways England Project Manager, Ajith Nair, said: “We’re very grateful to drivers for their patience while we completed this vital work. The footage shows the amount and scale of the work we’ve been doing. It will help drivers to realise how busy we’ve been and why the roads over the bridges needed to be closed while we were repairing them.”

As part of the works, Balfour Beatty erected a 2600 tonne steel frame with another 500 tonnes of metal bridge beams, the longest of which was 38.5 meters. Balfour Beatty’s workforce worked through the night to support the build and installation, ensuring minimal disruption to the rail interface and travelling public. The new railway station forms a part of Dundee City Council’s regeneration programme, aiming to create a strong and sustainable city economy that will raise the quality of life and improve the local environment. Hector MacAulay, Managing Director of Balfour Beatty’s regional business in Scotland and Ireland, said: “The completion of the new railway station and hotel marks a significant milestone in the

exciting regeneration of Dundee. “At project outset, we committed to making a real and sustainable contribution to the local economy and have worked closely with the Council to generate 58 local employment opportunities and 10 apprenticeship positions, with 100% of local applicants guaranteed an interview. “We look forward to furthering our relationship with Dundee City Council as the transformation of Dundee continues.” Joe FitzPatrick, Minister for Public Health and Sport said “The revitalised Dundee Station creates a gateway to the city and is an excellent example of how the industry can work in partnership with the public and private sector to deliver to wider regeneration goals. It is also delivering additional benefits through significantly increased cycle facilities, providing cycling capability to all parts of the Waterfront Development. “The investment in this station is just one part of our efforts to build the best railway Scotland has ever had. We look forward to the delivering more services and more seats in the north east making rail travel even easier, bringing with that benefits for communities, business and tourism alike.”

Linton Group & Henika Group secures planning permission for 6-10 Ingate Place, Battersea The Joint Venture between Linton Group and Henika Group has secured planning permission for 6-10 Ingate Place in Battersea. Following a committee meeting that took place on 26 June, the joint venture partners were granted consent on a 10 storey building comprising of office space to accommodate co-working, small and medium sized enterprises, along with some light industrial space on the ground floor together with a café. The project will be the first major planning consent for the partnership between Henika and Linton, which will primarily focus on commercial sites with asset management potential in London and the South East. The project follows the acquisition and successful refurbishment of 9-11 Wellesley Road, Croydon last year and is part of Linton Group’s new commercial strategy arm. The vision is to create a technological hub, the first for Wandsworth, which will accommodate local and international SME businesses within a 10-storey office block.

It will act as a hub for small and medium sized enterprises, which are becoming increasingly important to the Capital’s growth.

The overall site, which extends to 0.15 hectares (0.38 acres), occupies a highly desirable location; within 100m of Queenstown Road Station and easily accessible via cycling and pedestrian routes. There will also be the added benefit of the new underground station, which will provide an extension of the Northern line, set to open in 2021 and within 600m of Ingate Place.

Plan, which identifies key areas that can provide workspace for small and medium sized enterprises (SMEs). The proposal to create a technological hub that serves as a platform for both local and international SME business’s and promotes collaborative workspace will further develop the area and continue to foster business growth in the Capital.

The area is close to neighbouring amenities, such as local newsagents, electrical goods stores, launderettes and florists, which will benefit from serving the future occupiers of the building. Further, the sites proximity to Battersea Park will allow future occupiers of the building to be within a 15 minute walk to the green spaces and variety of shops, restaurants and cafes that characterise the area.

The schemes design aims to maximise space for both the building’s future occupiers and the public, allowing the public realm to conceptually carry through to the first four storeys of the building. The first four storeys will sit behind glazing, which will blur the distinction between the building and the street, whilst the front portion of the building will be set back to create more useable public space.

The Greater London Authority (GLA) had previously identified 6-10 Ingate Place as within the Vauxhall, Nine Elms, Battersea Opportunity Area, identified as an area with potential to accommodate substantial numbers of new jobs and homes. The site is also within a Strategic Industrial Location (SIL), as identified in the GLA’s London

Nearly 80% of builders and consumers support licensing construction, says FMB Almost 80% of builders and home owners are calling on the Government to introduce a licensing scheme for the UK construction industry to stamp out rogue traders once and for all, according to the Federation of Master Builders (FMB). The FMB has published an independent research report by Pye Tait entitled ‘License to build: A pathway to licensing UK construction’, which details the benefits of introducing a licensing scheme for the whole construction industry and puts forward a proposal for how it could work. Also, new consumer research undertaken by the FMB reveals the impact poor quality building firms are having on consumers and demonstrates that most home owners support the introduction of a mandatory licensing scheme. Key results from both pieces of research include: • 77% of small and medium-sized construction firms support the introduction of licensing to professionalise the industry, protect consumers and sideline the cowboys; • 78% of consumers also want to see a licensing scheme for construction introduced; • Nearly 90% of home owners believe that the Government should criminalise rogue and incompetent builders; • Over half of people (55%) who commission home improvement work have had a negative experience with their builder. Government to act. It’s unacceptable that more than half of consumers have had a negative experience with their builder. However, we shouldn’t be surprised by this given that in the UK, it is perfectly legal for anyone to set up a building firm and start selling their services without any prior experience or qualifications. This cannot be right given the nature of the work and the potential health and safety risks when something goes wrong. In countries like Australia or Germany, building firms require a license and we want to see the Government regulate our industry in a similar manner.”

For too long, the very worst construction firms, most of which undertake private domestic work, have been giving the whole sector a bad name. So that’s why this scheme should be of interest to the whole sector and not just to small local builders.” Berry concluded: “In terms of how the scheme might work, it needn’t be too costly or bureaucratic. Our report draws on the experience of experts from across the construction industry and puts forward a clear proposal. We are suggesting that the scheme covers all paid-for construction work by firms of all sizes, not just those working in the domestic sector. Fees should be tiered and could start at as little as £150 every three to five years, with the largest contractors paying around £1,000 over the same period. In terms of how it’s governed, the license should be administered by a single authority with a broad range of scheme providers sitting underneath. We are now keen to reach out to the whole construction sector to get their input on the proposal. If we can demonstrate broad support for this approach, we are optimistic that the Government will take it forward.”

NEW SPECULATIVE DEVELOPMENT LAUNCHES AT NIMBUS PARK, DONCASTER SLADEN Estates and Peveril Securities are set to start the speculative development of two high quality industrial and distribution buildings at Nimbus Park, Doncaster. Construction of the buildings, measuring 164,000 sq ft and 106,202 sq ft, will commence later this month, with completion scheduled for March 2019. Bowmer & Kirkland has been appointed as main contractor. Nimbus Park is located just minutes off J6 of the M18 at Thorne, Doncaster, which offers excellent connections to the national motorway network. Located at the junction of Linthouse Road and Govan Road, the three-storey hotel will incorporate a ground floor bar-café. Completion is scheduled for early 2019.

The new hotel is one of five the hotel company plans to build across Glasgow as part of a national expansion programme to create 21 new hotels across Scotland, representing a £100m investment and up to 400 new jobs. Other Travelodge hotels in Glasgow have been earmarked for sites in the West End, city centre, the SECC, Silverburn and in the East End near the M8. High quality, environmentally friendly paint finishes There’s a growing interest in environmentally friendly paints, but you don’t have to sacrifice performance or looks for environmental benefits. Harmful ingredients Conventional, acrylic based paints contain two potentially harmful components: volatile or-ganic compounds (VOCs) and acrylic softeners. Both escape into the atmosphere during painting and for many years after application, contributing to greenhouse gases. These toxic ingredients can also find their way into drains and groundwater when washing out brushes and disposing of paint tins in landfill. As well as being harmful to the environment, they can cause chest complaints, aggravate allergies and cause sick building syndrome. Acrylic based paints can also adversely affect walls. It is now widely recognized that they prevent a wall from breathing, which can lead to moisture damage such as blown plaster. Sustainable specification High levels of VOCs generally are associated with oil based paints, but they are found to varying degrees even in water based paints. The EU limit for paints to be classed as mini-mal VOC is 30g/L. However, this is relatively high compared to the value that environmental-ists recommend and which can be found among a new breed of environmentally friendly paints. It is advisable to seek out those containing a maximum of just 0.5g/L VOC. The easiest way to ensure you’re creating

a sustainable, environmentally sound specification is to check the paint is EU Ecolabel approved. This stringent standard covers every aspect of a product’s manufacture, use and disposal. Earthborn paints have achieved this demanding standard. Made without oils or acrylics, they are virtually VOC free and highly breathable. That means they do not give off any toxic emissions, so are much better for the environment as well as the health of building occupants. The breathability means moisture can permeate out through the paint, preventing damage to walls and significantly reducing their maintenance lifecycle. People on the move NFB welcomes new Midlands regional chair Catherine Windibank Catherine Windibank, business development manager at Richard Jackson Ltd, became Midlands regional chair of the National Federation of Builders (NFB) on Thursday 8th June at the NFB annual general meeting (AGM). The AGM saw the outgoing NFB Midlands regional chair, Neil Walters, become national chair of the NFB. With Neil Walters taking on the role of NFB national chair, a new Midlands regional chair needed to be appointed. Catherine Windibank was happy to be put forward and was nominated for this position. As the business development manager

of engineering consultancy and chartered building surveyors Richard Jackson Ltd, Catherine is the first woman to have held the role as the NFB Midlands regional chair, enabling her to inspire other women and promote diversity within construction. HANNAH VICKERS APPOINTED CHIEF EXECUTIVE OF THE ASSOCIATION FOR CONSULTANCY AND ENGINEERING (ACE) Hannah Vickers has been appointed new chief executive of the Association for Consultancy and Engineering (ACE). She replaces Dr Nelson Ogunshakin OBE who, as previously announced, is joining the International Federation of Consulting Engineers, FIDIC in Geneva. She will take up her new role at ACE on 11 September 2018. A civil engineer by profession, Hannah joins from the Institution of Civil Engineers where she led the policy and public affairs team. Prior to this she advised Ministers at HM Treasury on infrastructure delivery policy, while also working as a consultant to senior stakeholders on a number of major projects including Crossrail 2, a geological disposal facility for higher-activity nuclear waste and the redevelopment of London’s Olympic Park. She has also trained and advised the governments of Argentina, Indonesia, Egypt, Brazil and China in infrastructure planning and delivery. North Lincolnshire building and civil engineering firm Britcon has commenced works on site with a major contract to extend the Leeds operating site for Vickers Oils. The complex project involves the construction of a 5,500 sq ft twostorey, river-side building to house a first-floor laboratory with roof plant area and ground floor storage facility. Vickers Oils is a family-run company which has been based at its Clarence Road site in Leeds for almost 140 years. Company News MARTIN-BROOKS SHOWCASES SKILLS AT HERITAGE DAY Sheffield’s Martin-Brooks has joined forces with fellow heritage building experts to share the unique work it is undertaking at a North Lincolnshire church with next generation roofers. The specialist firm played an integral role in a heritage skills day, held at Holy Trinity Church in Messingham, to provide awareness and training for apprentices and young site operatives. Martin-Brooks is working on the grade II* listed church to renew all Westmorland slate coverings. The roof’s shallow and varying pitches are highly unusual and mean replacement slates have to be specified exactly to suit the angle at which they will sit and head nailed to improve performance. Apprentices, students and staff from Sheffield and North Lindsey colleges, along with roofers new to the trade, were taken up onto the roof by Martin-Brooks and architect Stephen McConnell, where they could see the shallow slopes first hand. Director, Nick Brooks and heritage craftsman, Paul Wassell, demonstrated how the existing slates had been stripped and how those that can be reused are selected and re-sorted according to size and condition. A training rig and work bench were erected at ground level, so attendees could try their hand at cutting natural slate, as well as battening and redressing a roof slope. Nick Brooks said: “Our work at Messingham forms part of a multi-phase project to revitalise

this historic church. The very shallow pitches on the roof are extremely rare, making it an ideal case study for newcomers to the trade. We welcomed the opportunity to share our skills with an enthusiastic audience and help educate the heritage roofers of the future.”

Company News Magnox sets the new standard for storing radioactive waste A project designing stores to hold radioactive waste from 12 Magnox sites has cut the cost of decommissioning the UK’s first generation of nuclear power stations by £45m. Various types of radioactive waste are generated throughout a nuclear power station’s operational and decommissioning life. Even though over 99% of the radioactivity leaves the site when the spent nuclear fuel is removed, some intermediate level radioactive waste (ILW) remains and needs to be stored safely on-site until the UK’s geological disposal facility becomes available. The final three stores, currently under construction at Chapelcross, Harwell and Hinkley Point A sites, will be the last ones to be built at Magnox sites and will signal the end of a project that has saved £45m for the UK taxpayer. A major part of a Magnox site’s decommissioning and hazard reduction programme involves retrieving this waste, stabilising it and placing it into a protective package that is suitable for this type of ‘interim’ storage. The earliest Magnox waste stores were built to one-off designs, but a programme of work was set up to come up with the single best possible design for these stores and then to ‘roll it out’ across the rest of the Magnox. Matt Buckley, The Nuclear Decommissioning Authority’s (NDA) Higher Activity Waste Strategy Development Manager, said: “By developing a standardised design and consolidating waste in fewer stores we’ve seen a real positive impact on the entire Magnox decommissioning programme,

realising significant savings for the UK taxpayer. “It’s great to see Magnox implementing the NDA guidance which has been developed working with Industry, for the robust interim storage of radioactive waste.” The store design has been so successful that it has even been used to store radioactive waste at Sellafield in West Cumbria, the UK’s largest and most complex nuclear site. Rather than building a store at each of its 12 sites, Magnox developed a strategy where sites close together will share just one store, saving an additional £45 million and cutting down on the disruption during construction. David Hubbard, Magnox’s Programme Manager responsible for the project to construct ILW stores, said: “We saw a real opportunity to learn from our experience and make some significant savings by coming up with a common design for ILW stores. The first two stores to be built under this programme were at Berkeley and Bradwell sites, but we will have seven in total by the time the project is complete.

“The innovative design cuts down the need for maintenance and reduces the amount of hands-on control needed to provide a safe and secure environment for the waste containers for up to 150 years.” The distinctive steel-framed building design has curved outer surfaces and is designed to shed rainwater without the need for gutters, dramatically reducing the potential for leaks – even in the worst weather conditions. The store’s design also incorporates thick concrete internal ‘shield walls’ to provide additional levels of radiation shielding. The store at Harwell Site has been clad with Siberian Larch, chosen by the local community as part of the engagement programme, to blend in with the local environment. The stores have been designed to be flexible and are able to accept the whole range of radioactive waste packages currently used to hold waste from the Magnox decommissioning programme. The main construction work has just finished at Harwell Site’s store, with the store at Chapelcross Site on target for completion later this year, closely followed by Hinkley Point A Site’s early in 2019. Craig Tatton, Managing Director Regional Building, at Interserve, the international support services and construction group, said: “We are proud of the collaborative relationships that have developed whilst we have been working on the Chaplecross and Hinkley Point A sites. The ethos of cooperation, shared learning and a one team approach with the same supply chain partners on all four projects has enabled us to share best practice and lessons learnt across the multiple sites.” And Brendan Dowd, Business Development Director at Trant Engineering said: “Trant Engineering are delighted to be able to showcase our proactive and collaborative approach to high quality and safe work systems as we work closely with Magnox to deliver this project.”

A-Plant apprentices named ‘Stars of the Future’ Two A-Plant apprentices have been recognised as rising stars in the plant hire industry. Tyler Lloyd and Imran Ahmed, both apprentice fitters at the UK’s largest equipment rental company, were honoured at the Construction Plant-hire Association’s (CPA) ‘Stars of the Future’ young Apprentice Awards 2018. Now in its sixth year, Stars of the Future is a national awards scheme designed to recognise the plant hire industry’s brightest young talent. Held in association with headline sponsor A-Plant, the event is run in conjunction with UK colleges offering plant mechanic apprentice training and is supported by CITB (Construction Industry Training Board). There are separate prize schemes for Level 2 and Level 3 apprentices, at both regional and national level, with nominees assessed throughout the academic year on their enthusiasm and commitment shown to training. Tyler Lloyd, a ‘bright and promising’ Apprentice Fitter at A-Plant’s Newcastle service centre, scooped a regional award in

the Level 3 category. While ‘inspirational’ Imran Ahmed, a Level 2 Apprentice Fitter in Heathrow, came out on top in his region. A-Plant’s Head of Training, Bob Harper, said the company was thrilled to see two of its apprentices receive accolades. He said: “We are extremely proud that two of our apprentice superstars managed to come out on top in their regional categories and over the moon to see that all of their hard work has paid off. “Last year we invested more than £2m in our apprenticeship programme and we currently have 150 apprentices in all areas from engineering and customer service to plant maintenance and driving. “As a Top 100 apprentice employer we are committed to developing apprentices and training the next generation of future leaders. We firmly believe that investing in the younger generation is investing in the future of A-Plant.” Stars of the Future is intended to recognise and reward outstanding apprentices who not only bring ability and commitment to their learning and work, but also possess those extra capabilities which mark them out as being not only the foundations of the future of the industry, but also potentially its leaders. When it came to selecting a Level 3 winner, it was Tyler’s consistently high exam results, wealth of knowledge and quality of both his written and practical work that impressed the judges. Bob Harper explains: “At his young age, Tyler’s knowledge and attitude portray that of a very mature, competent individual. “This is evident in the number of qualifications he has already obtained,

including: NVQ L2+3 in Plant, PAT Testing, PTS (Personal Track Safety), Rail Competency, Abrasive wheels, Cable Avoidance and Banksman competency.” Imran, who scooped the Level 2 regional award, was described as a ‘real inspiration to others’ and praised for his “can do” attitude, ambition and drive. Bob explains: “Since joining A-Plant at our Heathrow Service centre, Imran has impressed the team with his enthusiasm and work ethic. He is welcoming towards colleagues and customers alike and goes the extra mile in his work. “Imran has always abided by health and safety protocol and ensures those working around him do too. He shows excellent potential to progress within A-Plant and I am sure his hardworking nature will help him go far in this industry.” As well as coming out on top in their regional categories, both apprentices were also nominated for national awards. Tyler was one of three finalists to be shortlisted for the National Level 3 award and Imran was one of five apprentices nominated in the National Level 2 category. Alongside learning their trade from A-Plant service centres, the winning duo also attend Reaseheath College, Cheshire, on residential block release as part of a three-year Plant Mechanic Apprenticeship Programme. Awards were presented by Kevin Minton, Chief Executive of the Construction Planthire Association (CPA) at the Heart of England Conference and Events Centre in Fillongley, near Coventry, on June 14 2018. Awards News Amey collects RoSPA awards for health and safety practices Amey has received prestigious awards in recognition of its practices and achievements in helping its employees, clients and contractors get home safely at the end of the working day. The internationally renowned RoSPA (Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents) Health and Safety Awards are the longestrunning industry awards scheme in the UK. Amey’s Consulting, Rail and Utilities businesses each received Gold Medal awards – which are given to organisations with between 5 and 9 consecutive gold awards. Its Highways business also received a silver award. They were presented with the award during a ceremony at Hilton Birmingham Metropole hotel on Wednesday, July 4, 2018. Searching for ‘Can Do’ Firms A name that seems to keep cropping up when we look for capable off-site manufacturer’s is Benfield ATT, so we thought we’d investigate them a little more. Apparently the firm was founded in 1995 to manufacture Swedish style timber frame houses for Scandia-Hus, having themselves been established to import and sell the products of their Scandinavian parent company in the early ‘70’s. The business had grown well, so when it faced an adverse exchange rate against the Krone, it was only logical to transfer the technology and the fabrication to the UK. The houses were not cheap, but the superior performance standards of the Scandinavian technology employed in their design, made their sustainable, low energy, air tight characteristics very popular with those that could afford it. Thus, the little company that was formed to replicate this was, arguably, one of the very first to promote these benefits throughout the UK. It has to be remembered that it is only since that time that even the UK Building Regulations caught on to the improvements needed. While these have been progressively upgraded, they

remain woefully behind the northern European standards that the firm offered at that time. Although the gap has narrowed, it still maintains a lead having become increasingly focussed on delivering Low Energy Buildings since the recession. Initially known as AbbacHus, to capitalise on its technological superiority the firm soon changed its name to Advanced Timber Technologies (ATT). Additionally it began to offer Canadian style platform frame homes, competing with other UK firms to supplement and grow business from its base of replacing imported homes. This also meant offering 38x89 stud panels, rather than the 140 stud Scandinavian convention which are also its mainstay today. At that time UK Building Regulations enabled them to build 4 and more storey blocks of flats with such frames. In fact, in 2000 a unique demonstration building - Timber Frame 2000 (TF2000) – became one of the most significant research projects undertaken. This collaborative project involved the construction of a six storey, timber frame building – at that time the tallest of its type in the world – to show the commercial and technical benefits of using timber for medium rise buildings in the

UK. Its success encouraged greater adoption of timber frame in construction. Today, solid and composite timber buildings of 11 stories have been built with 30 and more on international drawing boards. In 2002 ATT was acquired by a firm owned by leading environmentalist, Professor Dr. Michael Benfield, changing its name to Benfield ATT. As he explains “Applying Marshall McLuhan’s famous phrase, ‘The Medium is the Message’, it is absolutely clear that timber buildings have symbiotic relationship with nature. What better way, then, to promote the need for environmental sustainability than designing, making and building timber buildings.” To support this belief the firm was first in the sector to gain ISO quality, TRADA ‘Q Mark’, and FSC Chain of Custody certifications, bolstering this with HRH Prince Charles’ sponsored Business in the Community ‘Big Tick’ awards for 3 years in a row. With this ethic flowing through its corporate veins, it was not long before Benfield ATT were involved in commercial, educational, healthcare, leisure, and industrial projects using engineered timber structures. Besides flats and houses it gained a reputation for tackling some of the more intricate and difficult construction challenges – in timber! Examples of this are a dental and health clinic

created on a curve and balanced on a single row of piles to meet exacting ground and site conditions in Exeter, the complex curved glulam ‘Armadillo Shell’ roof for a visitor centre near Cardiff, a huge 30m span portal frame for a furniture factory in the wilds of Dorset, the UK’s first amphibious house in Marlow, and a circular crèche for an international ‘cherry picker’ manufacturer in Milton Keynes. As Prof.B (as he has become known) smilingly states, “The things other people shy away from are exactly what we like to get to exercise our skills, experience and capabilities. While we’re very happy to prefabricate and build ‘standard’ houses, if it’s ‘different’ it ‘gets our juices going’.” This ethos of doing different things, often differently, has spurred the firm’s development of traditional carpentry, modifying this to produce standardised feature roof trusses, ‘systemised’ post & beam structures, and the use of hybrid glulam ‘cross laminated’ timber for solid timber walls, floors and roofs of ‘interesting’ carbon neutral structures. As Porf.B concludes, “We like to work with people who have new ideas and who, like us, see timber as a key sustainable material in our quest to ‘save the planet’. Prosperity Capital Partners and Assael Architecture have successfully secured planning for a £175m regeneration development in the centre of Manchester. The 556-home mixed-use scheme, named Old Brewery Gardens, is part of a residentialled regeneration on the first phase of redevelopment of the famous Boddingtons Brewery, a regional landmark opposite the Manchester Arena. Out of the 556 homes, 181 will be for sale and the remaining 375 have been designed specifically for rent. Prosperity Capital Partners, a leading investor and developer, has 1700 student accommodation and BTR units either completed or in the pipeline. Old Brewery Gardens, their first BTR scheme in the regions, has been designed by London-based Assael Architecture, who have extensive experience in delivering high-quality BTR projects. The project is set to transform the existing site from a surface car park into a hive of activity with a mix of exciting ground floor retail and community space alongside a
