A few of the more popular Phuket restaurants include Breeze; a Phuket restaurant with a very good modern menu where you can see the distant Phuket town from most seats.

Because of the dividing road the typical tropical, laid-back drif t wood reggae bars are noticeably absent from the beach; which are amiss as there’s nothing better than these bars, with the standard Bob Marley ‘Don’t worry’ words pulsing from some bassy speakers to spend time in, on a breezy sunny day. In many peoples opinion, this little point gives Samui the edge over Phuket. A few of the more popular Phuket restaurants include Breeze; with a very good mod-ern menu where you can see the distant Phuket town from most seats. Acqua at Kalim beach serves Italian dishes and is fast becoming a hotspot for the island’s sophisticated palates. Ka Jok See, Boathouse, Joe’s Downstairs and Raya are some of the many other excellent places in which to indulge. So how does one rate a restaurant or bar? All guides rely on a reviewer’s personal tastes, which very often flout the qualities for which they were chosen. Under pressure to appease the masses, now every guide wants to be the next ‘Trip Advisor’. Yet only when the reader agrees with the writer is the review considered sensible… That often means that the quirky and downright strange-yet-loveable establishments are often missing from the endless lists. Having spoken to a few thousand travellers these are the places people cherish or remember the most! ‘That little bar in Amalfi we ran into when it rained, it was so romantic…’ We are all different, with varying standards and necessities, so generalizing achieves little.

The ‘backdrop canvas’ theme for all this is Thai. You can enjoy the Thai dishes on any one of the four dining rooms found on different floors connected by narrow wooden stairs. Cheap, cheerful and certainly memorable, it can be found on Soi Phutorn, Phuket city. Stranger still is a restaurant in a factory which has become an institution and even supports local and ex-pat bands. It’s called the Underwood Art Factory and is like a Thai Octoberfest, with good food and a cool crowd. They call it The Lost Legends of Phuket show located on the Bypass Rd, Phuket. Phuket also has a floating restaurant Krachang, found on the calmer East coast of Phuket. You have to take a longtail boat to access it, so it really is off the beaten track. The ride is swift and leaves from Laem Hin Pier. The food served is certainly at the more exotic end end of the scale! Leopard Sharks, Mantis Shrimps and Moray eels are all available as well as the standard seafood fare. Most of these are kept in bamboo constructed ‘live tanks’ in the sea connected by plank walkways. SCAVENGER HUNT OF BANGKOK’S BEST CAFES Words by MELINDA NAYLOR

HOT ROASTS: BANGKOK’S 5 MOST UNIQUE COFFEE JOINTS! In a city filled with countless Starbucks and other large chains, and with cheap syrup-filled Thai concoctions available from stalls on every corner, Luxury Living has searched to find you the five best one-of-akind places to get your caffeine fix.

024

1 ROAST Neighbourhood: Thonglor Website: www.roastbkk.com Located in the heart of Bangkok’s hippest neighbourhood and featuring an indie-artsy vibe, Roast has become a classic spot for Bangkok’s coffee aficionados. Not only do they roast their own beans, which are all single-origin, in-house but they are also a distributor to other reputable cafes in the city. The shop offers many types of domestic beans sourced from Northern Thailand and a wide variety of hot and cold drinks including variations of French press, espressos and drip coffees. Roast also boasts an extensive menu of Western and Mediterranean dishes, not to mention a killer all day breakfast!

025

2 ROOTS COFFEE ROASTERS Neighbourhood: Ekamai Website: www.facebook.com/RootsBkk Roots is actually a roasting house first and coffee shop second, which tells you they really know their coffee. Originally created to supply beans to Roast (yes, the one mentioned above), this roasting house set up a larger location in Ekamai when they couldn’t keep up with expanding demand to supply other cafes in Bangkok while also offering their regular barista training courses. The team eventually decided to create a storefront only open to the public for a cup of coffee on the Saturdays and Sundays. Uniquely, at Roots you won’t receive a bill at the end of your weekend visit for your coffee or any of the delicious pastries you may consume. Instead, Roots operates on an honour system of sorts – where an “honesty” box is placed in the corner and they ask you to pay the amount you think your food and beverage was worth.

3 CERESIA COFFEE ROASTERS Neighbourhood: Prom Pong Website: www.facebook.com/pages/ Ceresia-Coffee-Roasters/431787946917113 Ceresia Coffee Roasters specializes in beans sourced worldwide, which they roast on site in small batches to extract the most robust flavour. Their offerings change with each season to keep the quality high and their customers surprised. Along with a wide variety of artisanal blended coffees they also serve excellent pastries and desserts. The shop is conveniently located close to BTS Prom Pong and offers great service in a casual, comfortable atmosphere. The only potential downfall is that the shop does not have readily available wifi, but that gives its customers an opportunity to actually talk to eachother over some of the best caffeine brews in the city.

026

4 GALLERY COFFEE DRIP Neighbourhood: Siam Website: www.facebook.com/GalleryDripCoffee Located in the Bangkok Arts & Culture Centre (BACC), Gallery Coffee Drip is a true specialty shop. You won’t find an extensive menu at this coffee joint – the owners of Gallery do one thing, and they do it very well. They source only the very best beans, from places as far away as Kenya or making the trips themselves to Chiang Mai to find incredible domestic beans, roasting them in Bangkok, and only offering cups of delicious drip coffees. Along with scrumptious coffee, the shop also features an incredible design and ambiance that is characteristic of all the shops and restaurants in the BACC. While you’re there take the time to walk around the centre itself to take in more distinctive stores and the rotating art exhibits.

5 DASA BOOK CAFE Neighbourhood: Prom Pong Website: www.dasabookcafe.com What makes Dasa Book Café so special is not necessarily the coffee – though their reasonable priced espresso variations like iced lattes and cappuccinos are surprisingly delicious – but instead it’s their atmosphere and ambiance that is so rare in a city as commercialized as Bangkok. Opened since 2004, Dasa is an English language secondhand bookshop located near Prom Pong BTS. Located at the back of the first floor is a small coffee bar whose offerings can be enjoyed at one of the benches or small tables scattered throughout this beautifully designed shop or while perusing the aisles for a good read.

TAKE HOME TREASURES OF THAILAND

Words by JODIE OAKES

FOR ALL THE SENSES WITH ITS BEJEWELLED TEMPLES, GLITTERING BEACHES AND BUSTLING CITY STREETS CRAMMED WITH THRONGS OF PEOPLE, LADEN WITH SIZZLING FOOD STALLS AND HOME TO MANY RELIGIOUS ICONS PEEPING OUT FROM BEHIND GAUDY NEON LIGHTS. YET FOR THOSE SEEKING RARE DELIGHTS, SILK BOUND SECRETS AND THE EXCITEMENT OF MIDNIGHT MARKETS, THAILAND IS A SHOPPER’S PARADISE. TAKE A GLIMPSE AT SOME OF THESE MUST HAVE TREASURES TO SEEK OUT IN THAILAND.

028

THE WORLD’S MOST EXQUISITE SILKS There is something uniquely special about true Thai silk in that every piece is completely different. The market stalls may be brimming with faux Thai silk products but for those who love the feel of soft luxury, you need to seek out the real deal. Exotic silks will have pearlesque sheen, lustre and the handmade touch which will be visible in the threads. Those willing to travel for the world’s finest silk can make the trek 350 miles outside of Bangkok to the charming village of Ban Sakool. Nestled in the dust and with the dogs barking you can watch the local women finely craft their silks on the loom. Visitors not wanting to leave the city can try the famous home of Jim Thompson.

029

ARTISAN ANTIQUES TO TAKE HOME The rich scented gardens, delightful pavilions and treasures to be found in Amantee Art Garden certainly make it the number one spot for savvy antique hunters. The rich cultural heritage and history of Asia can be found in the bright and beautiful objects on display and for sale in the leafy suburbs of Bangkok. Peruse soft lit oil paintings, hand crafted furniture from Tibet, lavish old world lanterns and fabulous tapestries all under one roof. After hours of browsing and buying you can sit in the shade and sip Mariage Frères tea.

STONEWARE AND PORCELAIN TO SET THE SCENE Thailand can be overzealous when it comes to finding stoneware and porcelain but you want to forget the cheap mass produced tableware and instead invest in something special. Sangkhalok stoneware and Bencharong porcelain are two of the biggest names when it comes to bespoke, richly crafted ceramic and pottery items. Sangkhalok stoneware is fired in ancient kilns in the historic towns of the Sukhothai Province. From delicate celadon elephants to hand painted plates and delightful tea sets, if you want to take home something with roots and handcrafted beauty straight from the fire of Thailand look for Sangkhalok and Bencharong.

030

JEWELS OF THE SEA Phuket is one of the best places in the world to buy beautiful shimmering pearls straight from the depths of the glittering blue sea. The Phuket Pearl Factory is one of the most prestigious places for pearl shopping and as a family owned business you can watch the divers collect the glistening oysters from the farm and the artisans craft them into something uniquely special. Beautiful pearls from the South Sea or the Phuket Pearl Factory are the epitome of luxury jewellery and ensure that no matter where you are in the world, the spirit of the sea is with you.

HIGH SOCIETY WICKER HANDBAGS Wicker work across the shores of Thailand blends ancient technique with modern beauty and the yan lipao woven handbags are a stunning example of art, tradition and delectable style. The southern fern vine is worked carefully to create breath taking lattice styles which were favoured by women of the highest society. You can find these inspiring handbags throughout the south and in major plush department stalls. Be sure to check you are getting the real deal with Thai silk twill lining, Nak or gold rimming and the mark of handcrafted, natural elegance when selecting your designer piece.

033

The Pivot Collection is a series of solemn-hued upholstered chairs in beautiful, basic silhouettes. Each chair is made out of molded foam upholstery and a die-cast aluminum base which allows the user to twirl on his seat. A lofty-back design is worthy to be placed behind an all-important office desk, while a low-back chair and a bar stool are included for more casual, laidback uses. One can consider the Flood Pendant series to be an interior jewelry. The lighting series pays tribute to automotive optical engineering with its high-reflection radiance. The lamps are made from injection-molded polymers, finished with a minimalistic design that can be installed in any setting. The Bell series welcomes a new pendant addition in a form of a table lamp. With a concave-themed design in silver tones, the lighting series exercises minimalism. Its reflective properties allows the object to take advantage of the colors and characteristics of its surroundings. Tom Dixon also debuts new lighting accessories in his series Beat, a sculpture-inspired illumination with the shape taken from the traditional water vessels in India. For accessories, Tom Dixon releases the Dome, an opulent collection of sculptural mirrors with convex shapes, producing a fish-eye’s view of any onlooker. The frames and bases are stripped from the wall mirrors, giving a contemporary approach to the traditional home accent. The Mirror Ball globes present a luxurious decor to the stark atmosphere. Its golden base is made out of vacuum metallized poly-carbons with reflective glass underneath, producing a bubble-like appearance when placed together. “A misspent youth in the London warehouse club scene, and a more recent series of experimental interiors designed for the new breed of private clubs are the reasons why we have chosen to reinvigorate the fabled British Members Club into a futuristic social environment,” disclosed Dixon in describing his gentleman-oriented furniture series. 2014 has marked the debut of the popular British furniture brand at the Salone del Mobile Design Week in Milan. The CLUB won Tom Dixon the Designer Of Year 2014 award from Maison et Objet Paris 2014.

FROM HARVEST, TO BOTTLE, TO DOORSTEP:

PROJECT JUICE DELIVERY THE SKYLINE OF KOH SAMUI RADIATES WITH A GLORIOUS SUNSHINE, BEAMING ITS RAYS ON A HUMBLE COMMUNITY OF HANDS READY TO WORK. In the navel of the island is an assemblage of busy workers, taking watch over organically grown fruits and vegetables, thoroughly examining whether one is ripe for the picking. The sunny nature of the island together with time, turn the sown seeds into blossoming crops. As each fruit swells aglow, there is a beckoning for a new time of harvest. It is a harvest indeed, all for the benefit of Samui residents. The result is a brimming stream of fresh, organic liquid born straight out of its local source. Alongside this, job creation and bustling community in Koh Samui is born as one of the core groups in manufacturing local, cold-pressed and organic liquids under the label Project Juice Delivery.

036

Project Juice Delivery started as a small wish in Rose Nattanicha’s heart. Majoring in Community Development, Nattanicha has worked with local societies for 4 years and has long dreamed of supporting indigenous farmers in the area. Thai fruits and vegetables, borne of the sunny skies and the gentle breeze of the sea, are exotic and uniquely delicious. The texture in flavor, the sweetness and complexity make local Thai fruits worth partaking. Rooted in her deep love for local communities, and guided by the objective of making good use of her available resources, Nattanicha chose to manufacture cold-pressed juices. “Organic food contributes to better health through reduced pesticide exposure for all and increased nutritional quality,” Nattanicha begins. Thailand, whose soil is rich in nurturing tropical harvests and nutritious root crops, is one of the best lands known for its clean, organic produce. “The importance of eating organic food from the perspective of toxic pesticide contamination, we need to look at the whole picture—from the farmworkers who do the valuable work of growing food, to the waterways from which we drink, the air we breathe, and the food we eat. Organic food can feed us at every level.” But her intention is more than helping the Koh Samui residents earn a living. Project Juice Delivery aims to benefit both the producers as well as the consumers. “Many people nowadays are focusing too much on beauty, but all in the wrong ways,” she discusses. “They take diet supplements just because they want to lose weight or gain better skin, but what they’re accumulating in their bodies are chemicals, without any care of its future effects.” Nattanicha found the best lifestyle solution is right in the heart of nature’s harvest. “Today, we live in a society that is overstressed, overfed, overworked, dehydrated, undernourished, and have adapted an on-the-go mentality. Cleansing your body with freshly pressed, raw fruit, vegetable, and nut juice is the perfect way to slowly rework your innate nutrition needs, ingrain eating habits and jumpstart your metabolism.” Any good intention, however, is not without a thorn in the road. “I asked some of my local friends here about this project and no one agreed with me to launch the business, especially when I said I wanted to do the delivery service,” she reveals. Nonetheless the stout-hearted Nattanicha knew that this road is for her, despite her nay sayers. “I didn’t say anything that time but I still thought,

“Cold-pressed juice preserves more of the nutritional content from the produce,...”

‘Why not? I can do it!’” And so she did. On April 2014, Nattanicha had her first order of coldpressed juices from her friends. It was not until she walked inside the Tops Market, a local grocery, that she saw a new door opening for her. “I didn’t see any fresh juices on shelf, so I asked the manager about it,” Nattanicha says. Her conversation with the Tops Market manager led her into an opportunity that will introduce her organic fruit juices into a much bigger captive market. This success only lead her to another dilemma: the local Thai community were still unaware of what cold-pressed juices are. “Most of

In addition to that, Nattanicha says that the more one consumes vegetables in their fresh and raw form, the lesser one will crave for junk foods. This particular variant, she reveals, is the most popular with the consumers. 14 Carrots. TRADITIONAL THAI-INSPIRED ECO ARCHITECTURE

040

THAILAND ARCHITECTURE IS GROWING TO BE AN ECO-FRIENDLY AND ENVIRONMENTALLY-AWARE STYLE OF CONSTRUCTING. This has gained fame over the years due to the unique and captivating design of the buildings that arise from it. It incorporates traditional design techniques like native timber product and details whose ideal concept is about living within its surrounding. Although this style of architecture has retained traditional elements, it also uses the sustainable and modern ways. The traditional concept achieved here is the open bottom floor that is designed to let better interaction with the environment therefore allowing easy weather adaptation. The design for the living, entrance, dining area and kitchen are glass enclosed on the first floor. This helps to maintain privacy as the windows allow direct connection to the outdoor environment. The homes are made to utilize natural air condition by using ventilation and stack effect. The climate of Thailand is the inspiration behind the basic design of villas that blends both outdoor and indoor environments by using open-plan living and outdoor terrace. Air conditioning is a globally increasing concept in houses and business enterprises. However, Thailand architects are trying to improvise techniques that achieve comfortable indoor environments without the use of air conditioners; methods like passive cooling systems have been suggested as better alternatives to air conditioners. It involves pathways that guide heat from the building’s interior to the exterior. In building, Thailand architecture revolves around questions like: - If residential, what relationship do you have between your residents? - How many occupants will you have? - Is it climate appropriate? - Is it compatible with the local topography?

041

Effective architecture should always address issues that go beyond facade and cosmetics.

MODERNISM Effective architecture should always address issues that go beyond facade and cosmetics. It must fully take into consideration philosophical and intellectual matters. In Thailand, these matters are often given preference over mere surface concerns. The architecture adheres to the tenets of Modernism which is a new approach to design, and which is not merely aesthetic in nature. Modernism here is not just being high-tech but also involves old material usage and creative ways that better our day to day lives. Endurance of construction materials and environment are factors that affect a building’s longevity. This also includes ultra-violet rays, humidity, heat and many more in tropical cities. Sun and humidity are great determinants of a material’s endurance. Metropolitan cities experience the heat island effect which is absorption of the heat by the concrete in the day. This absorbed heat is not dissipated in the evening but released from the concrete making the environment feel even warmer. Traditional Thai architecture is old and well preserved with beauty and simplicity intact. It involved features like overhanging eaves, elevation on stilts, big windows and pitched roofs. It’s, however, challenged by technologies of interior climate control that perceives the design of a building is not important as long as comfortability can be achieved. Sustainability is therefore the important issue since there are prevalent matters like flood affecting the current situation in major parts of Thailand. Traditional Thai buildings should not be dismissed since they are well adapted for the local climate over generations. Large windows allow good air circulation, peaked roofs make good drainage, stilts elevation prevents flood waters and overhanging eaves keep rain and sun out. These are environmental adaptations that should be respected and not seen as mere aesthetic.

042

POSTMODERNISM Postmodernism is a technique that makes fun of traditional visual references but eliminates people’s building experience. Looking at these buildings may be enjoyable to people but they will lack relation to them. Thai traditional buildings are mainly wooden structures on raised posts. Its design offers protection from hostile wildlife, dirt and most importantly from monsoon floods common in the area. Its design is created in a way that is made to adapt to its environment. Open high pitched roof enhances air circulation. Walls and open windows with large central entrance terrace offers ideal ventilation and relief from hot and humid climate.Wide and overhanging eaves offer protection from the sun and rain. Use of bamboo and wood proves the relative harmony with the natural environment. Due to the rising development that is occurring in poorly planned traffic cities, environmental degradation is inevitable. This architecture should be accepted and adapted since it holds solutions to major problems such as air conditioning and other prevalent issues. It’s a unique way that blends both traditional and modern ways of construction. This is an awesome way of achieving comfortability for both residential and business structures alike. It’s a design that echoes simplicity and creativity making it unique in the art of architecture. However, this does not mean that new forms of design and architecture should not be pursued, but it means that new ideas should be incorporated with old techniques to make sure that construction is achieved in the most environmentally friendly way possible. This will change the world’s microclimate, thereby making the world a better place to live in!

The British buyers were also coming back in who were the original high rollers in the 80’s and 90’s but still now only make up 15% of the buyers. Americans yes, but not so many Australians and almost no Thais who prefer to invest in Hua Hin. This means that one cannot fall back onto a local market in times of crisis. The sales that have taken place over the recent past have not resulted in an outflow of capital from the island, in fact Ian said quite the opposite which shows the belief in Samui. George the companies marketing manager stepped in and pointed out that building work schedules were by and large on time as companies now tend to over estimate the time needed to build. CITY BREAK ANGKOR: STEP INTO AN ANCIENT WORLD Words by TYLER BROOKS

052

ANGKOR, A UNESCO WORLD HERITAGE SITE, IS A REGION FILLED WITH BEAUTIFUL ANCIENT TEMPLES DATING BACK AS EARLY AS THE 9TH CENTURY IN INCREDIBLE CONDITION. Using Siem Reap city, which is just a short ride away, as a base, visitors can step into the enchanting and grandiose world of the Khmer Empire, for a perfect weekend get-away. Though Angkor is most famous for Angkor Wat, the largest single religious monument in the world, there are over 1000 other temples in the area to also be explored. Below, we list our top three must-see temples for this mystical region:

053

1 ANGKOR WAT Angkor Wat is the most famous temple in Cambodia, and certainly one of the most infamous historical and religious sites on the planet known for its size, design and pristine condition. Originally created as a Hindu temple dedicated to Vishnu in the 12th century, it was later changed to be a Buddhist temple and is still a site for religious activity today. The temple is considered the largest religious monument in the world and also the most well preserved temple in the Angkor region. These two factors, combined with the ongoing religious significance of the facility, evident in the groups of orange-clad monks and Buddhist ceremonies one may pass while getting lost in the Wat’s endless pathways, creates an authentic, spiritual experience for visitors. If possible, take a sunrise tour to avoid the large crowds and see both the temple and its grounds in all their glory.

054

2 BANTEAY SREI Banteay Srei, more commonly known as the Pink Temple for its signature red sandstone exterior, may not be as large as Angkor Wat but is worth a visit for the intricacy of its design details and unique colour. Because of the sandstone material, which can be carved like wood, the builders of this site were able to create more elaborate and complex designs on every wall, and the resilience of the material has also allowed the temple to stay in immaculate condition. Located roughly 25km from the Angkor Wat, this beautiful pink building dedicated to the Hindu God Siva, is worth the trip.

055

3 TA PROHM Ta Prohm is most famous for its signature trees and as the main temple used to film the iconic Tomb Raider film, starring actress Angelina Jolie. What makes this particular temple so astonishing is that it was never “restored in the conventional sense, and was instead left the way it was found -- with the jungle and temple seemingly intertwined. The trees on the site have grown through and amidst the ruins over time to create a scene that is so entirely distinctive that it has made this temple one of the most visited sites in Asia. Though the Angkor region has hundreds of other temples to view as well, Angkor Wat, Banteay Srei and Ta Prohm will provide any visitor with a great introduction to this stunning region with its astounding ancient Khmer architecture and rich history.

STAY: BELMOND LA RESIDENCE D’ANGKOR, SIEM REAP. Siem Reap, the capital city of the Siem Reap province, is only 5.5km from Ankor Wat and can be used as the perfect gateway to exploring the temples of Angkor. The city, colonized by the French at the end of the 19th century, has a fascinating mix of Asian and European architecture. The city is known for its talented artisans, beautiful markets, and authentic cultural dance performances. With the large influx of tourists coming to view Angkor Wat, Siem Reap has many hotels to offer visitors but “Belmond La Residence D’Angkor” is certainly one of the best. The property is a part of the Orient Express hotel group and is located in the centre of Siem Reap, near the river. The hotel has outstanding amenities: A stunning swimming pool with an impressive poolside restaurant, a fully equipped gym, and a world-class spa featuring ancient Cambodian healing techniques. Be sure to eat at the property’s signature restaurant, “Circle”, to experience some authentic Khmer food, especially on a night where the diners can watch traditional Cambodian dance performances. Accommodations include their signature “Residence Suites” with separate lounge and bedroom spaces, large en-suite bathrooms and private terraces, as well as their standard deluxe rooms. www.belmond.com/la-residence-d-angkor-siem-reap

SPOTLIGHT ON: DECHA ARCHJANANUN’S Weighty Water Vases Words by CARIS CRUZ

VASES ARE DEEMED TO BE COMMON HOUSEHOLD OBJECTS. Meant to accommodate flowers and brighten up a room, or carry lengthy, flimsy materials to save some space, vases plays a singular role and few pay attention to their decorative significance. One artist, however, puts vases into focus, emphasising their purpose dating back to a bygone era. “What are vases? How do they work?” Were the two questions that lead Decha Archjananun into the discovery of the Weight vases, a contemporary vessel collection that houses flowers in a minimalistic design wrought out of concrete. The use of vases, which can be traced as far as the Neolithic Period, can be a wonder to the modern man, sparking a curiosity whether our historical, older counterparts also had a panache for design. In 2011 Archjananun, ready to graduate from his MAS-Luxury Course at the University of Art & Design in Lausanne, Switzerland, used this query to create a series of unique vases for his final project. “I found that, all the vases in the world have a same basic principle to hold flowers,” he discussed. “There are 2 important parts which function differently. Top part has a duty to hold flower stem and base part, to hold water and also offer a stability to the vase.” Drawing on a prehistoric design strategy coupled with a striking, modern twist, Archjananun unveiled Weight, a set of 4 different containers which separates the two different parts which support each other. The concrete section, looking like a slab of an old, giant rock, contains the water. It offers a good base of storing the flowers’ roots and keeping them fresh. The mount on the other hand, is made out of powder-coated steel, holding the flowers straight up. Archananun waterproofed the steel bars to make it last along with the

concrete foundation. Despite the bulky lower portion, the beauty of flowers can be seen floating through the black cages. This permits users to appreciate the beauty of its blossom, branches and stems against the solid material. Weight vases can only hold limited amounts of flowers, but the unique design makes it an extraordinary piece that will certainly complement any contemporary home.

The goal is still the same: to decrease the exploitation of the Earth’s reserves as well as to minimize waste which further harms the planet. While many struggle to keep the balance of form, function and future use; when it comes to furniture, one man managed to keep his aesthetics glued to an environment-friendly principle. His name? Apirat Boonruangthaworn, founder of the Bangkok based Studio AB. One of Boonruangthaworn’s popular works is the Smood, a collection of outdoor furniture fabricated from recycled aluminum waste. Creating this series of tables and chairs did not require magic; all that was needed is Boonruangthaworn’s expertise in design. The working process includes the recasting of the aluminum material to create different joints and tubes that will make up the foundations of the furniture. While utilizing a common form of waste into a series of premium home pieces, Boonruangthaworn set up a mandate: no waste must be left out. Because the furniture series cleverly used screws and O-rings in assembling the joints and tubes, no welding is required, minimizing the design’s carbon footprint to the end. Boonruangthaworn also made it easy to build and dismantle the structures, allowing the tubes and joints to recreate different dimensions with the frame. The legs and handles look like beautiful bamboo logs when assembled, with a glimmering silver accent in

between each joint. Smood chairs and tables are coated with powder finish and are accentuated with handmade polyethylene rattan, promising durability for any weather condition. The minimalist design makes the collection appear as elegant outdoor pieces, with the black and white tubing perfect for muted color backgrounds. However, red, yellow, blue, pink and purple colors are made to match bright settings, adding a pop of color into any environment. This collection is showcased in Boonruangthaworn’s furniture brand +SENSE, a furniture label that intends to strip off unnecessary details while maximizing human sensory exploration in every piece.

THAILAND TREASURE TRAIL

066

ANYONE WHO TR AVELS IS REWARDED WITH STORIES TO TELL FRIENDS, MEMORIES THAT LAST A LIFETIME, UNIQUE EXPERIENCES AS WELL AS A SMALLER BANK ACCOUNT WAITING FOR THEM WHEN THEY RETURN HOME. A trip to Thailand is no different. People come from around the world for its beautiful, pristine beaches, luscious jungle covered mountains and unspoiled rainforest. It is also known globally for its hospitality, culture and amazing food. Many tourists come here looking for at least one of the above in order to escape and relax for a few days, weeks, or even months.

067

What if your next trip to Thailand was the story of a lifetime; a tale come true that would leave your bank account swollen for generations to come. If legend holds true, there is a great and mythical hidden treasure in Thailand, waiting to be found to make the finder famously rich! Imagine taking a metal detector to Koh Samui or to the mountainous region of Chiang Mai or Kanchanaburi while on holiday and after a few hours of searching, the metal indicator goes off the charts. Getting down on your knees to see what you have found, you see a chest! What could be inside? With all your might, and effort, you try to lift it but you can’t. Enlisting those you are with, you all pick a side to lift. Using the shovel to break the dilapidated lock off, the chest slowly opens. Glowing inside is gold and jewels from a forgotten treasure that was buried long ago. You were looking for a coin or a trinket but happened to stumble upon a famous, forgotten or mythical treasure. All your financial troubles would be over for you as well as your family, friends and anyone else you deem worthy of a donation. This has been depicted in movies such as, “National Treasure”, “Indiana Jones” and “The Count of Monte Cristo”. In these movies, and others like it, the group that finds the treasure goes on to fame and fortune along with all their wants and desires fulfilled. So, what kind of booty has supposedly been lost and is waiting to be found in the Land of Smiles? There is one unfound legend somewhere buried around the kingdom. When a controversial politician publicly announced that a vast hoard of treasure was left behind by a group of Japanese soldiers in caves near Kanchanaburi during World War 2, many people flooded to the region to try to find their fame and fortune.

Glowing inside is gold and jewels from a forgotten treasure that was buried long ago.

This legend of treasure was made famous in the late 1990’s during the financial crisis that hit Thailand. A senator at the time, Mr. Chaowarin Latthasaksiri made a public announcement stating that hundreds of tons of loot, including two tons of gold was hidden in a remote cave near Kanchanaburi. This treasure was big enough to bring the country out of its massive debt to the rest of the world. All of this lost fortune was packed into train cars and hidden in the remote caves around Kanchanaburi. Several treasure hunts have since taken place, but nothing has come up except for disappointment and time lost.

068

How did this legend come to be? During the dying days of World War 2 when the Japanese were still in Thailand, the Imperial Japanese Army filled train cars with valuables beyond belief and steamed off into the lush jungle in Kanchanaburi. Subsequently, the Japanese surrendered to The United States, the Japanese retreated to the east and the train was

never seen again.

069

Where did the train come from and how did the loot get on the train? While the Japanese occupied Thailand, slaves from all walks of life were used to construct a train line which connected Thailand to Burma. This train line was known as the Burma Railway. Today, it is known as the Death Railway. The train was used to transport war supplies for the Japanese between Thailand and neighboring Burma. Approximately 180,000 Burmese civilian slaves, and 60,000 allied

prisoners of war were used to build the railway. The railway got its name of the Death Railway because around 60,000 Burmese slaves died as well as 6,318 British soldiers, 2,815 Australians, 2,490 Dutch and about 356 Americans Prisoners of War died.

Many treasure hunts have stemmed from this legend,

including a highly funded one performed by former prime minister Thaksin Shinawatra. He was so convinced of the story that he flew a helicopter out to the sight where he thought the treasure was to meet Senator Chaowarin Latthasaksiri, the senator that made the story public. The government started excavating the area and supposedly found a buried train line to the mythical cave where the train was said to have been. At that time, government excavation of the site stopped while an 88足y ear足o ld villager was

Although he did not remember a cave at that particular location, he said Japanese searchers have been looking for treasure in the area since the war. Currently the cave cannot be found. The senator, claiming to have seen the tunnel said that the excavation that was done must have made the cave collapse. Even though further excavation around the area has been done in recent years, no evidence of any train tracks leading into a cave has been found. Do you think what you have what it takes to find the treasure? Want to travel to Thailand with hopes and dreams of returning home with a fortune equal or greater than anyone you have ever heard about? Take a vacation to The Land Of Smiles to see if you have what it takes to become a legend in the treasure hunting. Who knows, maybe you will stumble upon this fortune or even a fortune of your own!

WEEKEND AWAY: KOH JUM

THAILAND IS ONE OF THE PREMIER VACATION DESTINATIONS IN THE WORLD. With it’s warm climate, great food and beautiful scenery, the Southeast Asian country has something for everyone wanting to visit. According to tatnews.org, “Thailand... welcomed a total of 26,735,583 visitor arrivals in 2013, exceeding

the year’s original target of 26.1 million and representing a 19.6 per cent increase over 22,353,903 international tourists in 2012.” Currently, the Kingdom of Thailand is ranked #10 in the world for international tourism. With growing popularity, Thailand could soon be one of the top 5 most visited countries in the world. With all the attention Thailand has received globally for their tourism and hospitality, many locals feel as though some attractions have become overrun with tourists over the past few years. Some regional tourist associations have even complained to the Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT) that too many people are visiting the country and that the local infrastructure cannot meet the demands of the masses.

Perhaps the way Phuket was many years ago... Unlike Phuket today, there are no jet skis roaring up and down the coastline, no resorts pumping loud music all day, no lines upon lines of beach chairs set up for rent. No touts trying to sell a suit. There is no traffic and best of all, it is quiet. The only people around will be just you, the group you’re with and maybe a few other tourists. However, if you do have an urge to get out and do something, Koh Jum Resort can arrange a sightseeing tour to outlying islands, a snorkeling trip to Koh Phi Phi, or even a sea kayaking trip around the island. If you want to see how the locals live, bicycles can be rented around the island, or if you have a lot of time, get out and explore the small island by foot. Obviously, Koh Jum is the perfect weekend getaway. With its laid back atmosphere, long stretches of beaches and overall tranquility, the island is a great place to recuperate from a long stretch of indulging, or just a great place to unwind and watch the days go by. Many tourists come for a few days but end up staying much longer to prolong the moment of peace. Koh Jum should be visited at least once by those visiting the Thai Kingdom seeking a truly private tropical experience before it gets added to the tourist map.

088

It’s going to be almost impossible to keep leaving the country every month to renew your visa and continue as a tourist without good reason.

SO WHAT IS GOING ON NOW? There has been a change and an enforceable one started August 15th. All existing laws flouted in the past have already started to be adhered to. It’s going to be almost impossible to keep leaving the country every month to renew your visa and continue as a tourist without good reason. Thailand will now consider that you have ulterior motives. Even worse, suspect you of living in the country and in this instance Thai immigration police have put Russian overstayers as the number one offender. Visas elsewhere round the world are not unknown to be confusing or difficult either; as in China, the visa form request for “reasons for visiting” lists “visit” as an option; which is normally selected. ‘Have you been to a farm in the past six weeks?’ is of importance in order to enter Australia as is, ‘What side of the bed does your wife sleep on?’ to the U.S. immigration officials. Then there’s the India visa application form asking you to state your religion where you may not select ‘None’ as a response. It is hard not to fool around with these forms but if you do, the authorities will likely not share your sense of humour. For your own protection it is advisable, upon entry into Thailand, to photocopy or record with your camera the following: passport pages, latest visa, most recent entry stamp and embarkation card. Thai visa difficulty is nothing when compared to places like Pakistan for instance where acquiring a tourist visa depends on the time of year, the mood of the government and your assessed threat levels. You may get your visa one day, your friend not so the next – so try to be grateful at Thai borders where the best way to get ahead is to abide by the official rules and conditions which are as follows.

THE 3-DAY VISA RUN, INVOLVING A VISIT TO THE THAI EMBASSY, IS MORE TIRING, YET NECESSARY FOR LONG STAY TOURISTS, EXPATS AND BUSINESSES SEEKING A 1-YEAR VISA WITH MULTIPLE ENTRIES.

DAY 2 We missed our alarm and just made the group crossing the border after getting a taxi bike! After jumping aboard our buses again for five minutes, we drove down the road to the border at the newly constructed passport control building. It is a place on the river just before an ugly bridge crossing the border. From there we got a terrifying Malay taxi ride - high praise coming from a Koh Samui resident. About five taxis thought they were at Monte Carlo, trying hard to reach the place where we acquired the visas first. The main difference being the Grand Prix doesn’t involve large old trucks coming in the opposite direction on a horizontally challenged road! Visas in hand, we made our way back to the Thai border where our transport was waiting for us. The journey back was fast but under control, with a pressure release drink and food stop at Hat Yai. Here we alighted at a pub featuring an inoffensive band and forged friendships over our ordeal, similar to the camaraderie gained in the Somme trenches. Then Herbert came back to scoop (operative word in some cases) us up into his vehicles.

DAY 3 We finally caught the ferry home the next morning at 5am af ter some urgent après-beer toilet stops. Herbert is well regarded as a professional, and although his approach can be a little abrasive, reliable visa success (the mark of a professional border-bouncer) should be enough to overcome this and live to stay another day in the sunny land of smiles.

THE NEW SOCIAL MOBILITY: THAILAND A WORLD LEADER WITH THE FAR EASTERN SHORES BEING LEADERS IN WORLD TECHNOLOGY IT COMES AS NO SURPRISE THAT MOBILE PHONES CAN BE FOUND IN EVERY HAND ON THE STREETS OF THAILAND. Yet with the growing popularity of smartphones, now it seems that the humble mobile is being used to keep people connected with the online world. A new study from TNS called the globalConnected Life study proves that people in Thailand spend over three hours a day punching buttons on their phone and that two of these hours are used to surf the web.

Joe Webb, Head of Digital, APAC for TNS tells us some hard hitting truths about making the most of this growing market “Whilst we’re seeing significant media fragmentation across much of the world, Internet users in Thailand are bucking this trend,” He continues, “There’s real commitment to fewer platforms – each of which fulfils a distinct need for people. This loyalty presents a strong opportunity to market-

ers who understand how to engage in these spaces.” It’s the modern world and mobile technology is the new world order but it’s not just the internet that is vying for attention. Television also ranks highly with internet users with 36% of the population flicking on the box as soon as they stumble out of bed and 57% glued to the screen at the end of the day. On average studies show that internet users in Thailand consume two and a half hours of television every single day. These facts and figures show that when it comes to soaking up media, television and mobile phones are firm favourites leading the revolution with radio only getting 13 minutes of airplay and newspapers barely getting a glance.

world into consideration. Keeping up with the changes in the market and adapting a mobile-centric strategy can help brands to keep reaching out instead of getting left behind. Mobile phones go beyond the call when it comes to communication. Users can do pretty much everything on this small handheld device from checking internet banking to watching videos, gaming, shopping and simply surfing the web. Yet the major reason people are keen to switch on their mobiles in Thailand is so they can keep up to date with family and friends via social media networks. An incredible 61% of internet users in Thailand log onto social networks every day compared to 42% globally. Internet users in Thailand are incredibly social and highly active when it comes to engaging in the online world. 87% of users spend their week scrolling through and interacting on Facebook, 62% send instant messages and two thirds of the population use Line. In keeping with blossoming media trends three quarters of internet users in Thailand tune into YouTube every week to get their video fix. These statistics surpass those of the global world, proving that when it comes to mobile technology, Thailand simply cannot get enough and are paving the way for the rest of the world. The latest model consumption is also noticeable to new arrivals and this could be why Thailand has recently appeared twice in the top 10 most Instagrammed destinations in the world in 2014. Yet Thai internet users aren’t fickle, in fact it seems the modern user prefers to use fewer platforms and stick with the ones that deliver to their needs. This is great news for those companies that can see the light Mobile phones offer users incredible accessibility

HUHU VODKA New Zealand Spirit Brand Puts HuHu Grub into its Vodka... and it tastes delicious! Grubs are extracted from pine logs, rendered innate humanely, immediately infused with fresh squeezed lemon juice and placed in a holding tank of premium Triple Rock Diamond Vodka. Chef Peter Chaplin who has worked for Madonna, The Pretenders, UB40 among others (www.musicalknivesfood.co.nz) has assisted with Food Hygiene Standards and the best method to prepare the grubs for their final resting place. Stuart Williamson creator says, “The vodka changes after the grub is added and left to mature for a while. There is a soft hint of citrus which has been drawn out of the grub and a unique woody after-taste that leaves a lasting impression. This is definitely something distinctive for your taste buds to mull over. Once you get to the bottom there is a new secret pleasure waiting – and yes, I have eaten them and they are quite unique after the imbibing process. Take time to appreciate the newness we have created and the individuality of each bottle.” Though the HuHu Grub can be eaten raw; remove the black tip and Triple Rock advise against swallowing whole. Chef Peter recommends a little butter in a hot pan & flash fry the grub for about 15 seconds. When you bite into it be prepared for a hot burst of lemon with a healthy smack of vodka! www.topshelfliqour.co.nz
