EDITOR’S LETTER
T
here’s a word for people like me who love Christmas almost too much. We are yulephiles. According to the Urban Dictionary we are also known as Whovillians – the very antithesis of Dr. Seuss’ Grinch. I started my gift shopping in March, booked my Devon Christmas holiday cottage in June and my tickets to see Mariah Carey’s Christmas show at the 02 next week are burning a hole in my pocket (my goto karaoke song is All I Want for Christmas). Canary Wharf is resplendent at this time of year. Outside there are 450,000 white LED lights in the trees and surrounding the ice rink. In the malls, 53 trees are adorned with 300,000 baubels and decorations. Even the building our office is based in, One Canada Square, resembles the shape of a Christmas tree – well to a yulephile like me it does at least. So it’s been brilliant to help put this issue together. The team began attending Christmas gifting shows in July and we have been busy sampling festive cocktails, menus and hot chocolates (all on your behalf of course) since Hallowe’en. On page 26, writer Julia Zaltzman investigates the history of gift giving. Originally a pagan custom, the ancient Romans named the festivities Saturnalia to honour of the god Saturn. There was a public banquet followed by private gift-giving, wine and continual partying. So not much has changed it seems. In my yulephile house I have a strict festive movies-only rule throughout December – of course. One exception is Mary Poppins. On page 20, the star of the new reinvention of the film, Emily Blunt, tells how the role was the greatest gift she’d ever been given. Not everyone loves Christmas though. While researching the name of my festive obsession, I discovered that a nogophobic has a fear of egg nog and people who suffer from arandophobia are terrified of reindeers. Luckily, neither are found in abundance here in E14 – apart from late on Christmas Eve, of course, when Rudolph and co will be navigating the estate. The whole Canary Wharf Magazine team wishes you a very happy and restful Christmas.

ver since her scene-stealing turn as the sassed-up Emily in 2006’s The Devil Wears Prada, Emily Blunt has captivated audiences the world over in a multitude of genres. From thriller The Girl on the Train, and sci-fi adventure Edge of Tomorrow, to cartel action flick Sicario and, most recently, the widely acclaimed and uniquely terrifying A Quiet Place, the Wandsworth-born star is widely, and rightly, regarded as one of the nation’s finest contemporary acting exports. The actress has earned herself something of a track record for choosing characters who battle gangsters, aliens and inner demons – all the while winning plaudits for her work – but her next film is a touch more light-hearted in tone. What the story lacks in scares, however, it certainly makes up for in status. For Blunt has been chosen to step into the sizeable and oft-airborne shoes of the eponymous magical nanny in Mary Poppins Returns. “I had seen Mary Poppins as a child and I have such beautiful and strong memories of that film,” the 35-year-old enthuses. “I didn’t watch the film again during my preparations because I didn’t want to be swayed by Julie Andrews’s portrayal, which was so iconic. I knew that once I was given the role that it would be impossible to match what she did. My only choice was to create my own version of the character – this is my interpretation.” Thankfully for Blunt, she’s far from alone in her quest to bring to life a contemporary, all-singing, all-dancing sequel to the 1964 film starring Dame Julie Andrews and Dick Van Dyke. Indeed, the cast list for Mary Poppins Returns reads like a Who’s Who of Hollywood superstars, including Hamilton mastermind LinManuel Miranda, Ben Whishaw, Dame Julie Walters, Dame Angela Lansbury, Meryl Streep and even Van Dyke himself.

Helmed by Rob Marshall, who directed the Academy Award-winning Chicago, Blunt and co were put through their paces when it came to creating a successful follow-up to such a timeless favourite. “We rehearsed for eight weeks, which is unheard of,” Blunt reveals. “That’s how Rob works. When you show up on the day you feel completely at ease, because he runs it like a play to see if the scenes work and sizzle. We rehearsed the big dance numbers and did two and a half weeks of pre-records and then started shooting. The whole thing took about a year. “I was very, very nervous but Rob is an incredible director and he is a wonderful friend as well. He created an incredible, emboldening atmosphere on set. He protected me from feeling like I had a boulder to move aside – the iconic character, the iconic Julie Andrews. And he kept it so intimate for me. He was very empowering – he wanted me to completely make Mary Poppins my own.” Print-to-screen adaptations are becoming second nature to Blunt. With much of her filmography owing itself to the literary world, the Londoner reveals that she has a secret weapon when it comes to bringing popular books to screen. “I’m fortunate in having a sister who is also a literary agent and I try to follow her every piece of advice in that respect,” she laughs. “We also have very similar tastes and we’re always discussing possible adaptations. She’s also sometimes able to let me read the galleys of new novels before they are printed, which might turn out to be an advantage one day if I find some incredible story that I could buy the rights to or speak to a studio about.”

INTERVIEW
“I was very, very nervous but the director protected me from feeling like I had a boulder to move aside – the iconic character, the iconic Julie Andrews. He wanted me to completely make her my own” And Blunt’s sister, Felicity, is an intrinsic part of a Hollywood family that keeps on growing – she is married to Blunt’s The Devil Wears Prada co-star Stanley Tucci. The actress herself previously dated Canadian crooner Michael Bublé, before marrying John Krasinski, who starred in the US version of The Office. This year’s A Quiet Place, written and directed by Krasinski and featuring both himself and Blunt as the lead couple, proved that the pair were more than able to transfer their real-life chemistry to the screen. And behind the scenes, Blunt credits her decade-long partnership with Krasinski as being the bedrock necessary for her career to have taken off. “We’ve always been able to talk to each other and discuss everything together,” she says. “Being very open and talking and not hiding any worries or concerns is so important I think. It’s an advantage having someone in your life who understands the kind of things you go through in our profession. “We also try to be very supportive of one another and we know that we always have each other to rely on and make each other feel very loved and appreciated. It’s a beautiful feeling.” As befits the couple’s current status as cinema’s best-loved husband and wife, the consistently affable Krasinski is evidently just as endearing off-screen. It’s just as well, as both are reaching the twin peaks of their professional powers – with Blunt’s Poppins providing a slightly more family-friendly counterweight to Krasinski’s current run as Jack Ryan in the Amazon Prime thriller of the same name – at the same time as raising daughters Hazel, four, and Violet, two. “He’s a very good father and that’s been a great source of comfort to me because it’s not always that easy to pursue a Hollywood career when you’re raising young children and have to be working on movie sets for months at a time,” says Blunt. “He’s great at making sure there are always fresh bottles of milk and fresh food in the house; just those little things make such a big difference.” As for Blunt herself, the arrival of Hazel and Violet “changed her world completely”.
LU X U R Y L ON D ON .C O.U K
“You become a different person [when you have children] because you look at your choices from a very different perspective. Whenever I’m considering a project I always think of how it’s going to affect the lives of my daughters. I only choose films now that I definitely want to do and even then I have to really love the story and my character, because when your children are so young you have such a strong desire to be with them as much as you possibly can. “That’s why I nearly passed on Sicario because I was still feeling very vulnerable and so close to my daughter Hazel after her birth that I didn’t want to play in a very violent film about Mexican drug cartels. But once I did, I realised that becoming a mother gives you so much more strength than you thought you had. You learn that you’re actually more capable than ever.” Matching powerhouse performances from co-stars Benicio Del Toro and Josh Brolin, Blunt’s honest portrayal of FBI agent Kate Macer in the 2015 film smashed any doubt about female stars taking the lead in brutal action flicks. With her cut-glass tones and upper-class upbringing as a QC’s daughter, Blunt is perhaps more suited to the role of Mary Poppins than any character she has played thus far. She’s certainly got the blessing of Dame Julie Andrews. “I admire her enormously,” said the 83-year-old of her successor. If Blunt felt a weight of expectation before she accepted the role, she says the film has turned out to be “the greatest gift that I’ve been given”. “When I saw Cherry Tree Lane for the first time it was overwhelming. However incredible the first film is, I hope this one will be allowed to stand on its own. It’s magical, but it’s so grounded as well. There’s such a beautiful story running through it.” And then there’s the kudos the role has given her among her daughters. “Can you imagine my girls being able to say that their mom is Mary Poppins?” She smiles. “I’m just so thrilled.” Mary Poppins Returns is out from 19 December

Christmas Presents DISCOVER THE ORIGINS OF CHRISTMAS GIFT-GIVING, FROM THE PRACTICAL JOKERS OF ANCIENT ROME TO THE FESTIVE FIRS GIVEN THE ROYAL SEAL OF APPROVAL WORDS JULIA ZALTZMAN
C
ontrary to popular belief, Christmas presents, and celebrations altogether, existed long before the Victorian era. Gift-giving is a relic of a pagan custom, namely the winter solstice, which in the Northern Hempishere occurs in December. It was celebrated in ancient Rome with the Saturnalia holiday (a December festival in honour of the god Saturn), which comprised a sacrifice and a public banquet followed by private gift-giving and continual partying. The presents exchanged were usually practical joke-type gifts or small figurines made of wax or pottery. As Christianity became
increasingly widespread in Roman lands, the custom of giftgiving became tied to 25 December, the day of Jesus’s birth, and to the story of the three wise men bearing gifts. The tradition of gift-giving was further cemented through tales of Saint Nicholas, an early Christian bishop from the Greek city of Myra, whose legendary habit of secret gift-giving gave rise to the traditional model of Santa Claus. Some early Christian rulers believed that it was their subjects who should give gifts to their superiors, and insisted on tributes and tithes during that period. This changed around the turn of
the first millennium following the popularity of another historical gift-giver, Good King Wenceslas, who braved harsh winter weather to give alms to a poor peasant on the Feast of Stephen. Christmas gift-giving to superiors became less common, and around the time of the Protestant Reformation, bestowing presents on children became increasingly widespread in Europe. A number of midwinter or Christmas traditions in European folklore involve gift bringers, mainly the figure of a bearded old man, whom in Great Britain is now affectionately referred to as Father Christmas. In Slavic countries the figure is mostly called Father Frost. In Scandinavia, it is an elf-like figure who comes at Yule. In German-speaking Europe and in Latin Europe, the gift bringer became associated with the Saint Nicholas, who, among other incidents, presented three impoverished daughters of a pious Christian with dowries so that they would not have to become prostitutes. In some parts of central Europe, there is a tradition of a young child or fairylike being, known as Christkindl, bringing presents. During the Middle Ages, there was a period of celebration that stretched for 12 nights, from Christmas Eve to 6 January, hence The 12 Days of Christmas carol, which first appeared in print in 1780. Then came the Victorians. The first known commercially produced Christmas card was designed by John Callcott Horsley of London in 1843. With cards and decorations, the Victorians instigated many of our current seasonal traditions. Gifts were usually limited to a single present, which was typically homemade. Among the affluent, manufactured wooden toys were gradually introduced. By the end of the 19th century, Christmas Eve became the most common date for gift-giving in Western culture. To this
28

day, the British royal family observes this tradition, laying out their presents on Christmas Eve and exchanging them at teatime. It’s also well known among royal fans that the Windsor family usually focuses on inexpensive offerings for Christmas – in 2011, the Duchess of Cambridge made chutney for HM The Queen. All members of the royal household receive Christmas presents from The Queen, who personally hands out presents at Buckingham Palace and Windsor Castle. Continuing a tradition from her father, King George VI and her grandfather, George V, The Queen also gives Christmas puddings to her staff. About 1,500 Christmas puddings paid for by The Queen (through the Privy Purse) are distributed, and each pudding is accompanied by a greeting card from The Queen and the Duke of Edinburgh. The Queen also gives Christmas trees each year to Westminster Abbey, St Paul’s Cathedral, St Giles’s Cathedral and Canongate Kirk in Edinburgh. Today, of course, Christmas has become a highly commercialised celebration. In 2017, British families spent almost as much on Christmas as they did on holidays. Londoners are the country’s biggest spenders, with an average Christmas budget of £1,302 – half of which is spent on presents. In 2016, 70 per cent of respondents to an online survey of 13,576 people in 14 countries said that too much attention is put on spending during the Christmas period; 42 per cent said they felt forced to spend more at Christmas; and 10 per cent borrowed money to be able to afford the gifts. In 2018, however, gift-giving seems to have returned to some of the Victorian values. Many consumers are turning to personalised presents. “The demand for unique gifts is definitely growing,” says Louis Porter, co-founder of The Handmade Christmas Co., which creates more than 100,000 hand-finished products each year. “Not only are personalised presents crafted especially for the recipient, but they become keepsakes. In the case of our Christmas gift sacks and stockings, they become an integral part of a family’s Christmas tradition.”

BEFORE THE TREE Prince Albert, Queen Victoria’s consort, is usually credited with having introduced the Christmas tree to England in 1840. However, the honour of establishing this tradition in the United Kingdom rightfully belongs to Queen Charlotte, the German wife of George III, who set up the first known English tree at Queen’s Lodge, Windsor, in December, 1800. The later enthusiasm of Queen Victoria and Prince Albert for the custom helped spread Christmas tree popularity throughout the country, including the tradition of laying presents underneath it. Prior to the tree, children would wait for Saint Nicholas to come and put a present under their pillow, provided that they had been good during the year. Those who had behaved badly could expect to find a twig or a piece of coal. In the Netherlands, children put out a clog filled with hay and a carrot for Saint Nicholas’s horse. In other countries, children left shoes or boots by the fireplace on Saint Nicholas Eve in the hope of receiving coins and sweets. These traditions have subsequently combined to create today’s Christmas stocking. 29

MERRY TRESSMAS FROM CURLS AND COLOURS TO CROPS AND EXTENSIONS, THE FESTIVE SEASON IS THE PERFECT TIME TO TRY OUT A WHOLE NEW LOOK. FOLLOW THE EXPERT ADVICE FROM THE OWNER OF MARLA HAIR, A DESTINATION SALON FOR HAIR EXTENSIONS, COLOUR AND CUTTING WORDS JESSICA PATCHING
C
hristmas is definitely the time for a wow look – everyone wants to look their very best over the festive season and hair is high on the agenda. Work events and family gatherings mean we all need to push the boundaries and work on our look – so why not consider a complete change? First things first: are you ready to overhaul cut, colour, length, or maybe all three? Speak to your stylist. Make sure you have pictures of the look you’re considering, so you can get their advice. I’d recommend consulting a specialist in whichever area you’re looking to change. A good hairdresser will tell you what may or may not suit you. They will also be able to explain the upkeep and maintenance of the look, so you have a clear idea of what that will entail. TURN UP THE VOLUME
Hair extensions are now worn for both volume and length, even in shorter styles. At Marla, I often fit extensions for a thicker and fuller look. Styles such as bobs and shoulderlength, layered cuts are very popular with quarter or half head fittings – these styles look fabulous fuller. The best way to get the right look with extensions is to visit a highly skilled professional. He or she will advise not only on what is possible, but also on what will look good on you. A thorough consultation with your stylist is extremely important as he or she will be able to tell you how much hair you will need to have added, and advise you on the length. There are now many techniques on the market and each suits different hair types. The applications available include micro rings, tapes, micro bonds, sew-in and fusion extensions. Depending on the method and the type of hair used, extensions should last for three months before you need maintenance. You may want to make sure your extensions are ethically sourced, 32
STYLE
and ensure they are human hair. Check smell, texture and quality, and finish. Hair that hasn’t come from a human donor will be dry; it may have a shiny, glassy finish, it may smell of chemicals and it may simply feel fake. Quality, ethically sourced hair should feel like your own – and if you have good-quality hair fitted, you will be able to reuse it many times. Hair extensions won’t damage your own hair, as long as three key points are followed. The extensions need to be fitted safely – this means neatly, with the right amount of hair in each connection. The right method needs to be used for your hair texture and type. And you need to look after them as advised. You will need to use a professional shampoo that gently cleanses the hair, rather than adding conditioning agents. Don’t be afraid of a Christmas updo with your new extensions – but be gentle! Don’t pull on them. Keeping updos low and loose is good advice. You’ll definitely fall in love with your extensions – you’ll find it’s a very odd feeling when they are removed because you get so used to the gorgeous added thickness they give you. COLOURS, CUTS AND CURLS
This winter season is all about lots of warm, rich tones with mid-lengths that are sharp and full. Fringes are making a strong appearance. We are still set to see a lot of shadowed roots and softer colouring – which is excellent on the maintenance side. When it comes to curls, the newest trend is the tight spiral. To create this look, use a narrow tong or wand and curl the hair in small sections. Be prepared: it’s a look that takes a while to style. This is a busy time and if you’re
seeking something easier to achieve at home, for updos we are seeing a lot of slicked-back ponytails. Buns and twists are also a popular Christmas party look. We’re also seeing a lot of styles where the hair is left down but kept off the face. Looking ahead to 2019, we predict hair-up styles that are “done” – but made to look effortlessly undone; think relaxed waves with soft colouring. HAPPY HOLIDAY HAIR
Winter isn’t the greatest season for hair; central heating can really dry your hair out. Making sure you use a good-quality conditioner will help – and don’t skimp on regular treatments. An oil or a leave-in conditioner will work wonders in the cold weather. Olaplex is fabulous. It can be added to colour or applied as a standalone treatment. It takes your hair back to its natural state prior to colouring, and works by rebuilding and reconnecting broken disulfide bonds in the hair, repairing it and making it look and feel amazing. My other two favourite conditioning agents are Goldwell’s Dualsenses Just Smooth Taming Oil, which is an excellent detangler and rehydrator, and Caviar Rapid Repair Spray by Alterna, which is amazing for moisturising, repairing the hair and adding shine. Whichever look you go for, keeping your hair happy, healthy and shining over the holidays will make you glow as well – and lead to a very merry Tressmas. WRAP A THOUGHTFULLY WRAPPED GIFT CAN BE THE ICING ON THE CAKE – FOR A PRESENT THAT WILL STAND OUT UNDER THE TREE TURN TO THE TOP WRAPPING PAPER TRENDS OF 2018 FOR INSPIRATION (YES, IT’S A THING) WORDS JULIA ZALTZMAN
S
ome people have a knack for wrapping and some, well, just don’t. ‘It’s what’s inside that counts’ has never rung more true than when you guiltily hand over a present that is 90 per cent sellotape. It is, however, part and parcel (if you’ll excuse the pun) of the Christmas season, and a tradition that goes back further than you would think. Historians believe wrapping gifts probably began not long after paper was invented (around 100 BC), although wrapping paper as we know it today is a more recent innovation. Originally, gifts were wrapped in simple tissue paper or heavy brown paper. Before that, cloth was often used, such as a handkerchief or napkin. Today, gift wrapping trends have come full circle, in large thanks to environmental awareness, which is increasingly making single use gift wrapping a thing of the past. And after taking the time to get the perfect item for your loved one, going the extra mile with extraordinary gift wrapping ideas is the icing on the cake. Whether you’re a wrapping pro or a sellotape saboteur, take heed of our guide to the top gift wrapping trends of 2018.
55
BOTANICALS AND FLORALS
This is by far the biggest wrapping paper trend of 2018, and one that shows no sign of abating as we approach the festive season. Take your pick from exotic blooms, such as Australian waratahs and gum leaves, to the gorgeous greenery of palm leaves and olive branches, right through to the perennial favourites: roses, peonies and hydrangeas. There are many variations on the botanical theme – with neon florals making their presence felt alongside dandelion motifs. Non-traditional colour combinations such as navy, jade and gold are highly effective but, to go the extra mile, try natural elements foraged from outdoors. Tree clippings, pine cones and sprigs of holly serve as stunning gift toppers – fast and free! NATURAL LOOKS AND ECO CRED
When it comes to the eco approach, kraft paper – plain and patterned – is still popular, and specialist eco papers, such as elephant paper (made from elephant dung – it’s better than it sounds), are also being sought out. An entirely natural product, each sheet of elephant paper is slightly different and that’s a good thing, but natural papers tend to be a little thicker than regular wrap and thus a little harder to fold. They’re also economic, but more importantly, they offer a vintage and rustic aesthetic. Team this simple approach with sprigs of rosemary and pepperberry to 56
F E AT U R E
perk up your kraft paper-wrapped gift. Alternatively, for the ultimate bespoke option, embrace your inner artist and get creative with black kraft paper and white paint markers. Chalk board creativity does away with the need for gift tags, taps in to the monochrome trend, and looks utterly stunning underneath your tree. MARBLING MAKES WAVES
The marbling effect is having a major moment and comes in many styles – from a subtle natural marble look in dove greys and pastels through to big bold swirls particularly in blues, pinks and purples. The watercolour marble effect gives a contemporary edge to this choice of design, while a handmade option provides a priceless personal touch. Muslin cloth also has a distinctive texture you can take advantage of – just dip it in any coloured dyes of your choice to create a unique design. THE ANIMAL KINGDOM
This year, all of God’s creatures abound in the wrapping paper world and you can expect to see animal, insect and bird patterns, from the cutest dogs and cats to bears, meerkats, gorillas and sloths. Swans are on the cusp, flamingos are a bit yesterday and the end to the mythical unicorn fad is nowhere in sight as the ubiquitous motif continues to appeal to the little people gift market. For a little added festive appeal, try mixing woodland creatures with plaid bows, red ribbons and crisp white gift tags. A choice bauble or tree decoration can create a fantastic embellishment that serves as a gift in itself. LITTLE BIT OF BLING
Metallics continue to make their presence felt, with 2017’s breakout colour, graphite, still going strong. Rose gold and copper are still to be found but are not as prominent as in years past. The metallic splash or splatter look is popping up and it dresses up a treat. Metallic touches to a floral pattern also add an element of sophistication. Large oversized bows, glitzy metallic gift tags and even gold leather string can elevate a pleasingly wrapped gift to elegant stand-out status.
LU X U R Y L ON D ON .C O.U K
GO THE EXTRA MILE Whatever your choice of gift wrap, be sure to always add a little something extra that transforms a wrapped present into a cherished gift. Mix and match tartan prints in festive colours for a stylish and colourful statement. Bind small and intricate items together to serve as accents on your gift. Try using items that reflect the recipient’s personality; think of them as pieces of a charm bracelet to truly personalise the present. Alternatively, turn to the reason for giving the gift – at Christmas candy cane toppers and gingerbread gift tags lend your present an ever popular edible touch. For 2018, it’s all about making the exterior as memorable as the gift itself. 57

T
he temperature has dropped, the nights are closing in, mittens and bobble hats are out and open log fires are warming the cockles of our hearts. Yes, it’s Christmas. Regardless of age, Christmas is a time of year when everyone truly taps into their creative spirit, and dynamic décor ideas come to the fore. From traditional red, green and gold to something colourful or minimal, the Christmas decorating trends change as the years pass. While previously, minimalist white interiors have been paired with dark, rich accents, this year decorators are looking to fashion’s recent rainbow resurgence for inspiration – and it looks to be the biggest Christmas decorating trend of 2018. At John Lewis, the in-house design team has put together seven striking, multi-sensory Christmas collections, from ruby to gold and amber to moonstone, which can be combined to create the perfect graduated rainbow. “Each of our seven collections takes its lead from a particular landscape – and all of the sounds, scents, and, of course, shades associated with it –but moving through the spectrum of colours on your tree from top to bottom is a sure-fire way to create a show-stopping centrepiece,” says Dan Cooper, Christmas buyer at John Lewis. Originating from social media platforms such as Instagram and Pinterest, where a colourful post means more likes, the rainbow trend first came to the fore this summer and has since gone on to dominate in both interiors and sartorial circles alike. Convinced that it will filter down to the festive period, the John Lewis team has introduced 60 colours and finishes of plain glass baubles

(including matte, shiny and miniature), all of which have been mouth-blown in the Czech Republic. “We wanted to capture customers’ imaginations by showing them how to create something truly different this Christmas, and we believe that we’ll see a lot of customers giving it a go,” says Scott Bartle, John Lewis’s junior Christmas buyer. To achieve the perfect rainbow look, the key is to acquire enough baubles in each colour, as the base of your tree will require more of certain shades. Decorations that encompass myriad hues is an easier way to tap into the trend; pick up Pickering’s six gin baubles for a colourful and tasty addition to your tree. Elsewhere in the house, plug in Hurn and Hurn’s 40 multicoloured LED lights to brighten up a dark corner, and hang a kaleidoscopic wreath for an effective front door ornament or dazzling feature wall display. Rainbow garlands and tassels also add a touch of glamorous detail.

For those attuned to something contemporary, yet a little less colourful, embrace your tree’s arboreal beauty with ultra-minimalist décor. Adorned with simple twinkling lights for a more subdued ambience, a traditional forest green pine decorated in a variety of muted and glittery ornaments oozes thoughtfully-curated sophistication. But while a skinny, unadorned tree in a creamy white room is perhaps a minimalist's dream, a gilded tree decorated with golden ornaments will bring a warm and welcoming glow to the home. Add a few woodland items, such as dainty owls and deer, to be on trend with your décor, as well as gold pineapples, glitzy avocados and pink flamingos. For the diehard monochromists, simple black and white baubles with neutral sleigh ornaments make a chic and bold
statement, and if you’re wondering how to cover the unsightly bottom of your Christmas tree, a metal ring or tree collar can be a tidy and elegant method, especially if it includes a muchloved gold trim. However, if you’ve not been living under a rock, you will be aware of the chunky knit blankets that have taken social media by storm; a snug knitted tree skirt will give your room standout appeal. When you’re big on holidays but short on space, a tiny tree is the perfect solution. A quirky miniature potted pine can be accented with spaced out ornaments, including simple white candles, heart-shaped cookies and green spheres. They’re also a great way to add a hint of Christmas cheer to other rooms in your home that don’t traditionally get decorated, such as the kitchen or bedrooms. Throughout the house, it is important to think beyond the tree. Strategically placed trimmings and embellishments will make the world of difference. Place a few branches of holly inside a vase and add a pop of colour with bright ornaments, or hang a branch from the ceiling and decorate it with trinkets in modern shades. Bottle green, white and black are all sure bets this season. Oversized ornaments are another major hit this year. For a design that is as easy as it is eye-catching, carefully pin one or two cascading curls of ribbon up high, letting them fall unencumbered to the floor, and then pair with oversized adornments. Giant snowflakes and star ornaments are always winning formulas, while tying an oversized bow on your mirror is the decorating hack you never knew you needed. For the final touch, be sure to go strong on additional lighting.

A small but thoroughly modern farmhouse-shaped lantern will fit pillar candles of any colour and will make your house warm and inviting. Dress up a mantelpiece with a mix of candlesticks — tall, small, mercury glass or crystal – and turn a common winter scene of firewood, evergreen branches and pinecones into a dazzling display with some simple yet effective string lights. Twinkling lights woven throughout a garland make an even prettier display than stockings. Finally, sit back, immersed in the spirit of Christmas, and embrace your home’s elegant festive appeal.

TANGERINE DREAM Ditch the traditional red and green Christmas colour palette in favour of this orange knit by Mango – the ultimate winter warmer in a jazzy tangerine hue.
I’m an entrepreneur at heart. When I founded Carat* London 15 years ago, there was only fine or cheap brass jewellery on offer. I felt there were very few choices for women to buy great quality jewellery that was also good value for money.

So far, lab diamonds have had very little effect on the jewellery industry because not many people are selling them yet. There is still a lot of resistance from people who believe that diamonds should come out of a hole in the ground. I think peoples’ attitudes towards lab-grown diamonds will change. There are arguments that show that growing diamonds in a lab is more environmentally friendly and that it’s a socially responsible consumer decision to purchase a lab-grown vs a mined diamond.

hile York has the white rose and Liverpool the liver bird, Manchester’s favoured emblem is the worker bee. The buzzing tribute first came to fruition during the Industrial Revolution, for which Manchester was leading the charge. The motif symbolised the hard work of every Mancunian who was contributing to the city’s literal hive of activity during the 19th century. In 1842, the worker bee was officially made a part of the city’s coat of arms, forever cementing it as the symbol of Manchester. More than a decade ago, David M Robinson (DMR) unveiled its Honeycomb collection in homage to the city’s heritage. Now, ahead of the jewellery designer’s 50th anniversary next year, and a relaunch in the northern metropolis, DMR has launched an updated version of its sweetest collection. “Honeycomb has remained popular with our clients since it was first introduced,” says DMR’s managing director John Robinson. “Inspired by the most famous symbol of Manchester, now seemed the perfect time to release this refreshed look collection ahead of our exciting relaunch in the city next year.” Available in 18ct rose and yellow gold, the new line includes a dainty necklace (£1,550) and complementing bracelet (£1,350), both of which feature interlocking golden hexagons set with dazzling round brilliant cut diamonds. A new ring (£1,250) and a pair of elegant hoop earrings (£950) complete the collection. David M Robinson, Jubilee Place LU X U R Y L ON D ON .C O.U K

SEÑA 2014
Quite possibly the best vintage of Ornellaia to date, this prestigious winery was founded by Lodovico Antinori in 1981. Exploiting a lucrative inheritance from his mother’s family, he planted Bordeaux varieties in 1982 on what was then an unremarkable, 70-hectare patch of scrubby countryside in Bolgheri, coastal Tuscany. Today it remains one of Tuscany’s finest wines.
Please don’t let the fact that Seña is from Chile bias you – this is a blockbuster, and make no mistake. A project initiated by Robert Mondavi and Eduardo Chadwick (Decanter’s Man of the Year 2018), Seña was intended to prove that the wines of Chile could easily rival their more expensive cousins from Bordeaux. The 2014 is another standout example: expect an intense nose of black fruits, plum and spice, with blackcurrant, blackberry and mocha on the palate.

HOW TO THROW A FABULOUS PARTY, ACCORDING TO
TESSA PACKARD TO CELEBRATE HER NEW COCKTAILINSPIRED COLLECTION, THE BRITISH FINE JEWELLER DIVULGES HER TOP TIPS FOR HOSTING A NIGHT TO REMEMBER WORDS MHAIRI GRAHAM
T
essa Packard knows a thing or two about parties. Whether throwing a soirée in her impeccably curated studio in Chelsea or commanding festivities at 5 Hertford Street (her favourite haunt), the British fine jewellery designer is both an attentive host and sparkling guest. Her new Hammered & Stoned collection is inspired by the key to any good party – a wellshaken cocktail. “My favourite aesthetic has always been one that fuses timeless elegance together with vivid colour, a sense of wonderment and storytelling and a healthy dose of whimsy,” she says. “From conception to creation, cocktails embody these qualities in spades.” The playful, party-starting collection spans Highball Earrings, with hanging fruit slices in vivid dyed jade; a shimmering one-of-a-kind Campari necklace, strung with amethyst, pink quartz and garnet; and a gleaming Banana Bender charm in 18-carat solid gold. “I design jewellery for women who prioritise unique, clever design over carat weight; who wear pieces that express individuality and make other people smile.”

What is your favourite cocktail? When the sun is shining my alliances lie with the Brazilian Caipiroska. When the weather gets colder (especially at Christmas time) I switch to Whisky Sours. Where is your favourite place in London for cocktails? Mark’s Bar at HIX. What are the key components of a good party? Getting the ratio right of people to space is crucial. Too much space and the party will fall on its face within an hour; too many people and you will be encouraging early departures. Guests must feel comfortable but the space crowded. If you insist on playing music from the start, make sure there is at least one room which is quiet and easy on the ears. You’ll be surprised how many people find loud music an annoyance at parties. Mix up the ages. The best parties have an equal mix of younger and older generations. What is your go-to party outfit? Flat shoes. The minute your feet start hurting you always start thinking of bed. Who does your catering? For formal parties, Mustard Catering. For informal parties I chuck a whole bunch of mismatching things together that I know will line the stomach and still taste great at 2am.

“Getting the ratio right of people to space is crucial. Too much space and the party will fall on its face within an hour”
What makes a good guest list? Generally speaking, with larger parties, it’s kind on your guests if everyone there knows at least one or two people; at smaller soirées you can afford to be much braver and invite a mix of guests that have never met before. What’s your party trick? Eating a whole lemon without wincing. I can also clear a whole room in minutes when it is time to go to bed. I have no qualms about asking people to leave. Worst party faux pas? Overstaying one’s welcome. What’s on your playlist? SIA - Cheap Thrills; Bastille - Pompeii; Flo Rida - Right Round Most memorable parties of all time? There was one on a deserted island in the Canadian Arctic under the Northern Lights; a handful in Africa and a lot at home. Best advice for blasting the cobwebs the next day? Ibuprofen before bed; eight hours sleep; three Bloody Marys when you wake. Where do you spend Christmas? At home in Scotland. What will you be wearing on Christmas day? A novelty Christmas jumper and jeans. Where will you be this New Year’s Eve? Most likely at home, in front of the TV with three snoring dachshunds and a bottle of red wine. I hate any form of a New Year’s party and would much rather go to bed at 10pm.

KIDS’ CLUB FROM SANTA’S BEST GROTTOS TO PERFECT PARTY CLOTHES, FESTIVE FUN HAS NEVER BEEN SO SIMPLE WORDS MORAG TURNER
FIND YOUR PERFECT SANTA
It’s a busy time of year for Father Christmas: not only is he getting ready for the big day, but he is snowed under making his list, checking it twice and trying to find out who’s naughty or nice. To help him, his elves have set up grottos in and around London in lots of great spots, and he’ll be visiting them throughout the festive season. First up is Hamleys, where he’ll be reading little ones’ Christmas wishlists and keeping them entertained with seasonal games and activities. There’ll even be a special gift bag to take home (hamleys.com). If you’d like to really get in to the festive spirit, head to Winter Wonderland in Hyde Park, where you can catch a ride on the Santa Express, meet the elves in his workshop and shake hands with the man himself (hydeparkwinterwonderland.com). Out of town, it doesn’t get more festive than Lapland UK. Set in Whitmoor Forest in Ascot, this is his woodland outpost where children are guided by elves to take part in fun activities, such as making cookies with Mrs Claus and crafting your own toys in the toy factory. Finally, you will all meet Santa in his own log cabin in the snow-covered woods. When Santa stops off at Lapland UK he’s incredibly well organised and will know every child’s name off by heart and exactly what gift they want (laplanduk.co.uk). Those who have been especially good might be lucky enough to be invited to Santa’s original home in Finnish Lapland. Of course, not everyone can fit on his sleigh, so you’ll need to leave it to the Magic of Lapland to help organise your flights and accommodation. Once you get there, elves will take over and make sure everyone has some wonderful festive fun. Think huskies, sleigh rides and snowmobiles, as well as a special meeting with the chap in red, of course (magicoflapland.net). Wherever you plan to meet Santa this year, be sure to book as soon as possible, as he really is a man in demand. You’ll need to get your letters sent off quickly and, of course, tell your little ones to keep their fingers crossed that they are on the ‘nice list’.

YOU’VE GOT MAIL
If you can’t visit one of Santa’s grottos this season, don’t panic: the elves at Polar Post are on hand to help deliver your children’s wishlists to Father Christmas – and they will ensure a reply too. Handwritten by the man of the hour on his official notepaper, each letter bears the Christmas coat of arms, so you will know that it has come from the North Pole itself. Be sure to send your message before 10th December, however, as after that the elves will be too busy to deliver Santa’s mail to him and you won’t get a response. polarpost.co.uk

D E E P WA T E R S ALBANY, A LUXURY RESORT COMMUNITY IN THE BAHAMAS WAS ONCE A CLOSELY-GUARDED SECRET. NOW IT IS REINVENTING ITSELF AS ACCESSIBLE TO ANYONE WANTING A SUPERIOR SLICE OF PARADISE WORDS ANGELINA VILLA-CLARKE

he best way to arrive at Albany in the Bahamas is, of course, by yacht. Cutting through the waters, which come in a myriad shades of turquoise, azure, ink and milky-blue, past dozens of tiny, untouched islands, means that when you finally arrive at the marina and come faceto-face with the towering, cutting-edge architecture of the resort – it’s all the more impressive. The stark white of the super-yachts bobbing in the waters is the ultimate contrast to the impossible blues. The vessels also serve to remind you that this is no ordinary place to come on holiday. Albany is owned by British billionaire Joe Lewis and his private investment organisation Tavistock Group, along with golfing greats Tiger Woods and Ernie Els and actor and musician Justin Timberlake. Its aim? To be one of the most exclusive resort communities in the world, offering a range of luxury living – with properties available to rent or to buy – for a line-up of glamourous guests. Found on New Providence island in the Bahamas, the ambitious development first opened in 2010, and it has been quietly making waves with those in the know ever since. While it is built around a historic residence – Albany House – a candypink manor house famous for having featured in the Bond movie Casino Royal (it’s the backdrop for Daniel Craig’s memorable scene where he emerged from the ocean) – Albany is better known for its penchant for contemporary architecture. The Honeycomb, for instance – the most visually impressive building and the first thing you’ll see on arrival – was designed by Bjarke Ingels Group (BIG) — the award-winning Danish design firm responsible for noted projects, including the London’s 2016 Serpentine Pavilion and the Two World Trade Centre in New York. Its hexagon design shimmers with a series of transparent infinity pools set into terraces, while, inside, there is a choice of luxury apartments. All have an individual ‘flavour’, some have coastal-chic interiors, with shell-encrusted chandeliers and mother-of-pearl furniture, and others with African-influenced schemes, which are richly textured with baskets as art work, sandy-hued palettes and jet-black furniture.

The Orchid, meanwhile, which is clad in metal lattice-work cut in the shape of flowers, has been conceived by Morris Adjmi Architects, the New York-based company behind Manhattan’s Samsung Building and Brookyln’s Wythe Hotel. Here, you’ll find nine sprawling apartments which have spectacular circular living rooms, marble floors and bespoke Italian furnishings – not to mention far reaching views over the Atlantic. Tetris is the latest build, set to open in 2020, and will be the boldest project to date. Conceived by OOAK Architects, a female-led Swedish architecture firm, it will have a modular block design (based on the famous computer game), with 25 vast apartments, which are on sale at $5-6m and reaching around $20m for the penthouses. Giving an insight into how much Albany properties are in demand, it turns out that all of the apartments have already been sold, with interested parties now ‘queuing’ for forthcoming builds yet to break ground – there are three more buildings planned for construction over the next few years. For those wanting a slice of the action, holidaymakers can visit and can choose from an urban-style apartment, or a range of ocean-front villas or garden houses, found dotted across the 600 acres, and available to rent through the Albany’s Hotel Programme. As well as living it ‘large’, it means that you can tap into all the benefits available to residents – from the round-theclock concierge service to the impressive range of facilities. It’s no surprise, given the fact that Ernie Els is one of the owners, that a highlight of Albany is the championship golf

At Albany there’s pizzazz - but it’s paired back. It’s part of a new era of quiet luxury
course he designed. In fact, all of the names behind Albany have left their mark – Justin Timberlake’s being The Sanctuary recording studio, which calls in a starry line-up of musical legends to lay down their tracks. While Joe Lewis has spearheaded the state-of-the-art boardroom facility, called The Bullpen (a nod to the famous Wall Street Bull) aimed at those who don’t have a ‘switch off’ button, even while on holiday. The health and fitness facilities are also second-to-none and as a consequence Albany attracts a high number of professional athletes who train, or recuperate following an injury, here. Don’t be surprised to find yourself working out next to a professional footballer, for instance. From the al fresco CrossFit training facility to the 25-meter lap pool, there is something for everyone. There’s also a range of expert trainers on hand who can create personalised programmes if you so wish. Dr Stephen Truszkowski, known as Dr. T, is the in-house sports chiropractor, medical acupuncturist, manual therapist and trainer and works with some of the leading sports stars. Christine Carey, meanwhile, is an holistic health coach and integrative wellness therapist, who treats the body and mind, by incorporating eastern and western healing techniques. Set to open soon is the revamped spa – which aims to be one of the leading wellness centres in the region, with a host of wellknown health experts under its roof. Targeting physical, mental, emotional and spiritual health, it will offer a 360 approach to health. On offer will be a range of diagnostic technologies, biotherapies, fitness nutrition, mind and body treatments as well as aesthetic services. As well as an equestrian centre, art gallery, cinema, hair salon and a range of boutiques, Albany’s other attraction is the culinary offering. Overseen by executive chef Oliver Stephens (who has worked at Hotel de Crillon in the past), there are a choice of outposts for guests to choose from, depending on your mood. Aviva, for example, offers gourmet cuisine with a Caribbean twist, while the Vesper Bar & Lounge, has a nightclub vibe with a sushi lounge, cocktails and resident DJ. Footprints – with its sunshineyellow booths and sand floor – is a retro-inspired beachside eaterie offering lobster fritters, tuna poke bowls and super-salads. While Wave is an innovative pop-up concept, hosting wellknown chefs and restaurants from around the world, such as Loic Siino, from Eze in the South of France and Tom Halpin from Copenhagen’s Noma. 98
It goes without saying that the Bahamas has long been known for its glamourous connotations. After the first casino opened on Paradise Island in the 60s, touching down here was akin to visiting Las Vegas but with a tropical vibe. Since then, Atlantis and, more recently, the mega-resort Baha Mar on Nassau, have opened – giving visitors the same glitzy feel. Albany, by contrast, feels more under the radar: there’s pizzazz but it’s pared-back. It’s a new era of quiet luxury. Just keep it to yourselves. Albanybahamas.com Rates start at $2,500 per night, through Albany’s Hotel Programme. To book, email the Albany Concierge Service at hotel@albanybahamas.com
ALBANY AND BEYOND: THE CULINARY HOTSPOTS TO VISIT COCO PLUM BISTRO, NASSAU French chef Cecile Cathelin offers up French classics with an island twist in this charming jungle-inspired restaurant designed by Gabriella Curry, an ItalianBahamian interior designer. Choose from Grilled Octopus, with black beans and mushrooms, Lobster Persillade, with garlic butter, parsley and spinach, and Big Baba della Mamma – a sponge cake with rum and whipped cream. Ask to sit outside in the exotic garden. cocoplumbistro.com CLEO, SLS, BAHA MAR, NEW PROVIDENCE In this beachy-styled restaurant, the white-on-white décor is contrasted with verdant plants and mix-matched vintage crockery. This is worth the 30-minute drive from Albany to try award-winning chef Danny Elmaleh’s Mediterranean-inspired cuisine with a Bahamian focus. From the Harissa Tuna Tartare to the Curried Calamari – choose from the small plates section to get a range of unique flavours. baharmar.com VESPER BAR & LOUNGE, ALBANY, NEW PROVIDENCE Albany’s very own James Bond-inspired lounge is a must come Friday. Chef Sukhum Temp serves up the freshest sushi (the Caribbean Lobster Roll is a must), sashimi and tempura. Hot bites include Bao Buns, Truffle Fries and Sizzling Wagyu Beef. Eat on the terrace with the crashing ocean below you. albanybahamas.com

NEWS IN BRIEF WOOD WHARF TO BOOST BUSINESS
TOWER HAMLETS BOOK AWARD 2018 WINNER PROVES THAT BOOKS ARE MORE THAN JUST WORDS
T
he annual London Borough of Tower Hamlets Book Award, sponsored by Canary Wharf Group, took place at the end of last month, at the East Wintergarden. For the third year, CWG has supported the Tower Hamlets Schools Library Service to deliver the awards. The local competition began in 2007 with the aim of encouraging students to read more, bring children together to enable debate and discussion about books, broaden their reading range and develop their literacy. For this yearly event, CWG purchases the shortlisted titles and provides a set of these books to every primary and secondary school in Tower Hamlets. Students then vote for their favourite book. This year, over 300 students and teachers attended the event. The votes were carefully counted and the students decided that Mega Robo Rumble by Neill Cameron was a clear winner. Author Neill explained after the award presentation: “It really means a lot, because the award is voted on by children from schools all over Tower Hamlets and Newham, many of whom I got to meet at the event and see their brilliant and imaginative presentations and artworks based on the books. Mega Robo is actually set in the area - Alex and Freddy’s Secret Agent base is in Canary Wharf, - and they go to a school just like the ones that voted in the award. “It’s very much a book that’s for those local children. I wanted it to feel like it belonged to them, and so it’s brilliant to hear that they enjoyed it.” Neill strongly believes that comics are a great tool for encouraging young children to read more, “You can see so much of the story happening visually from actions and expressions. It draws you in and makes you want to decipher the words so you can know more about what’s going on. “A wall of text can be quite scary or off-putting to developing readers, but a comic is inviting and accessible. I was really glad to see a couple of graphic novels included in the book award alongside prose novels. As far as I’m concerned, anything that gets kids reading - and excited about reading - has to be a good thing.” For more information about the Tower Hamlets Schools Library Services, please visit www.towerhamlets-sls.org.uk
Having already created one of the largest business districts in Europe, Canary Wharf Group is continuing to evolve London’s former docks site by redeveloping a 23 acre site into 5m sq ft of mixed use space. This brand new development, Wood Wharf, Canary Wharf’s new district, is one of the most ambitious urban regeneration projects in London. A sense of community, education and culture is at the heart of these plans, creating workspaces for entrepreneurs and innovative businesses. The development is set to bring 20,000 jobs to the region.
CANARY WHARF MAPPED OUT FOR AUTONOMOUS VEHICLES Addison Lee Group, the global ground transportation business, and Oxbotica, the British leader in self-driving vehicle software, have launched a unique 3D street-mapping exercise in Canary Wharf. The mapping process will help create the backdrop for new, autonomous services which meet urban requirements for efficient transport, reduced congestion and improved air quality. The companies, together with Canary Wharf Group and insurer AXA XL, used a vehicle equipped with mapping technology to record every kerb, road sign, landmark and traffic light on the estate.
UK’S TALLEST BUILD-TO-RENT TOWER TOPS OUT Rising amongst the skyscrapers that shape Canary Wharf’s skyline is Newfoundland. Recently topping out to reach its full height of 220 metres, the tower comprises of 636 private rental apartments and is set to become one of the first build-to-rent schemes available on the estate. Designed by renowned Mayfair-based architects, Horden Cherry Lee, the building’s unique appearance stems from its transparent ‘diamond’ structure and will provide residents with spectacular panoramic views of the capital through floor-to-ceiling windows. Residents will have exclusive access to a range of onsite facilities, including a private dining room, gym, virtual fitness studios, children’s play area and terrace garden.

THE FUTURE’S BRIGHT SAVILLS PREDICTS A BOUNCE IN PRIME HOUSING MARKETS IN ITS NEW FIVE-YEAR FORECAST
S
avills Research has predicted a rise in the value of prime central London properties in its new fiveyear forecast*. Initially, the firm expects continued uncertainty surrounding Brexit to prevent market recovery for a further year to 18 months. Until the negotiations are complete, the report states, the market will remain price sensitive and needs-driven. A proposed additional stamp duty level of between one and three per cent on international buyers who do not pay tax in the UK (as discussed at the Conservative party conference in October) is also expected to add to buyer caution in the short term. However, once the Brexit air has cleared, the Savills team expects property values to increase, reaching a six per cent hike in 2021 and an overall 12.4 per cent rise over the five year period. “Historically, any recovery in the prime housing markets has been sparked in central London with a strong bounce in
values, with double digit annual growth not unusual,” says Lucian Cook, head of residential research at Savills. “The catalyst has often been a currency advantage, though prime central London residential property also has to look identifiably good value on a world stage. “This time around we’ll also need a backdrop of greater certainty, which we expect by the end of 2020, clearing the way for values to rise. However, a number of constraints – rising borrowing costs, increased taxation, higher investment returns on competing assets and a general election in 2022 – point to a slower rate of recovery than in previous cycles.” The team also predicts that the number of global “ultra-wealthy individuals” that live and work in the capital will increase by more than 40 per cent during the next five years, having noted that office uptake by international businesses has remained stable since the EU referendum.
*Forecast assumptions: A Conservative minority government remains throughout the period to 2023. The general election in 2022 is close run, assuming the main political parties maintain the same broad policy agendas currently adopted. The London economy grows by 11 per cent over the period of the forecast. Employment in the financial and insurance sectors is retained at circa 350,000 over the forecast period and job losses are contained to no more than 20,000. Bank base rates increase to 2.6 per cent by the end of the forecast period. The UK’s trading relationship with the EU remains largely as it is today. The only change to stamp duty is the proposed introduction of an overseas buyer.
