y good friend Stella called me out of the blue last week to say she was in town and was I free to meet up after work. I’d not seen her since our teenage years when she’d moved to the States with her family, later going to university in Boston and then working in investment banking on Wall Street. We caught up over Pimm’s and a Carluccio’s take away while watching the Queen’s Club tennis tournament on the outdoor screens in Canada Square Park. We then strolled through the Canary Wharf Estate, admiring various art installations, chatting to other Wharfers and ended the evening drinking coffee next to the fountain in Cabot Square. The following week Stella mailed me to say she’d asked her company for a transfer to London and she’d be working - and also living - in Canary Wharf from August. She said she’d fallen in love with London and wanted the kind of lifestyle she’d seen others enjoying that evening out. Canary Wharf really comes into its own in the warmer months with so many reasons to enjoy the al fresco lifestyle. This issue we celebrate summer with features on how to get the most of the season, where to go and what to wear. We’ve shot an incredible fashion shoot in Montenegro but featuring local big name designers and there’s a comprehensive events guide - plus of course the usual mix of intriguing features. One local celebrity Idris Elba - actor, king of style and superstar DJ - even reveals which summer tunes got the Royals dancing at Harry and Meghan’s wedding and we take a look at how the new 5G technology may have the ability to change the world for the better. And what could be better than making great connections? Just ask my pal Stella.

Morag Turner is the editor of City Kids Magazine and our Kids’ Club writer

What have you been working on for our July issue? I went to Montenegro with my team and shot an editorial on a boat for the July issue. It was a great shoot day, and I hope you enjoy it while reading the magazine (p.56).

What have you been working on for the July issue? I had the pleasure of exploring Mexico and its wonderful array of five-star boutique hotels.

What is your dream shoot location? My dream shoot location would be the Maldives. I would love that crystal clear water and amazing huts for a couple of creative ideas.

What’s on your travel bucket list? Lebanon is a place I’ve been dreaming of for a while now, particularly its magical valleys lined with huge cedars.

What are you looking forward to in July? I’m looking forward to going on holiday to Switzerland. It’s my first time visiting the country and I will go hiking in the mountains. I’m very much looking forward to it.

What are you looking forward to in July? I know we Brits talk about the weather a lot, but ... the sun!

What have you been working on for our July issue? This month I’m talking about sustainable swimwear for kids – cleverly made by recycling the very plastic that is polluting our oceans and turning it into fabric (p.74). What is your top summer holiday activity for the kids? I have three sporty sons so they will be playing cricket, tennis and sailing all summer. Keeping them busy is the key to harmony during the holidays! What are you looking forward to in July? I can’t wait to get back to Ibiza in July. It’s my favourite family holiday destination.

INTERVIEW

I

t’s a long road from Hackney to Hollywood, and Idris Elba has made the journey with aplomb. Over the past decade or so, he has not only become one of Britain’s best-known actors, but also emerged as an international superstar and a style icon, regularly appearing on lists of the world’s best dressed – and picking up an OBE along the way. There have been recent appearances in BAFTA-nominated productions (Molly’s Game), a directorial debut (Yardie) and box office-busting turns in Thor and the Avengers franchise. Elba also played a role at the wedding of Prince Harry and Meghan, Duchess of Sussex. Everyone from George Clooney to David Beckham descended on Windsor Castle and Elba entertained the acclaimed guest list from the DJ booth, playing “all that sort of funk stuff era from the 80s that always gets people up. It doesn’t matter if you like trap or you’re 10, you’re gonna like those songs,” the 46-year-old laughs of his post-nuptial playlist. (The royal friendship continues: Elba married his third wife, model Sabrina Dhowre, in April this year, and the prince and the duchess reportedly gave them a £7,000 artwork by the Connor Brothers as a wedding gift – a print featuring the caption ‘Why Fit In When You Were Born to Stand Out?’.) Elba’s DJ role at the royal party befits a star who, despite having made his name as an actor, refers to music as his “first love” and worked as a DJ under the name Big Driis from his teens onwards. He credits his eclectic musical tastes to his parents – his father worked at the Ford factory in Dagenham and Elba, who was brought up on a Hackney estate, might well have ended up following the same path, had music not beckoned. “I grew up with reggae and dancehall LU X U R Y L ON D ON .C O.U K

and I was always mixing cassettes with my favourite songs. But my parents loved calypso, blues, jazz and even country, so I always listened to everything,” he explains. “I started DJing first as a way of making money and, at the same time, it was a way of expressing my creativity.” Music, he says, is a “universal language, and a good DJ acts as a vibe-builder. My challenge as a DJ is to go to a club or an arena, figure out the environment and the mood, and get the whole crowd tuned onto the right frequencies. I want to be able to get everyone hooked on the beat and the mood so that people are going ‘Wow!’” Like Elba’s on-screen profession (he started out in Crimewatch reconstructions), his career in music was not blessed with overnight success. Now

creative challenge, but Elba has already shown himself more than adept at combining his acting, directing, DJing and producing talents. He also finds time for other projects. He was appointed a goodwill ambassador for the Prince’s Trust a decade ago – a £1,500 grant from the Trust enabled him to train with the National Youth Music Theatre when he was a teenager and he has since credited this with “changing his life”. In 2015 he broke the Flying Mile land speed record at Pendine Sands in Wales, and he is currently unbeaten at kickboxing, albeit after only a single bout. “I like to challenge myself and face down my fears,” he nods. “I’ve had this need to make sure that I’m not being prevented from doing something out

“I like to challenge myself and face down my fears. I think there’s so much we can achieve if we have the will to do it” the situation is very different. A once-in-alifetime booking like the one he undertook in May 2018 numbers among other highprofile events. “I’ve gone through some tough times when I was working a lot as DJ earlier in my career,” he admits. “But now, with Coachella and a lot of other gigs I’ve been doing, I feel like I’m really able to make the most of that work. That’s important to me because music was my first love and it’s very different from what I do as an actor. I’ve been DJing more often in the last few years because I get so much pleasure and creative satisfaction from that.” His ultimate ambition? “To direct a film in which I’m playing, and do the score on top of it.” Few would be able to rise to such a

of fear. That’s why I’ve done a lot of challenges like racing cars or going back to kickboxing last year, which was one of the hardest things I’ve ever done in my life. I think there’s so much we can achieve if we have the will to do it.” His own experience bears this out. In typical style, Elba’s earliest brush with the idea of becoming a movie star typifies the potent combination of anti-establishment cool and self-confident ambition that lies at the heart of his continued success. “I skipped school one afternoon when I was 16 to go see Once Upon a Time in America,” he smiles. “I was inspired by Robert De Niro; I was blown away by his performance. The next day I told my acting teacher in school that I wanted to 21

be like De Niro. My teacher, who believed in my talent, told me that it was important to pursue your dreams and that one day I would become a great actor. That set me on my way.” This August, Elba will add yet more strings to his cinematic bow. He can already boast a CV resplendent in its variation, running from gritty cop thrillers like Luther and The Wire, which brought

lot from that experience,” Elba says of the latter role. “Dwayne and Jason are masters of that genre and when you’re on a big set like that it gives you the feel for how that kind of a movie works. It’s one more step for me.” The ladder, however, has not always been easy to climb. “I still remember the bad times, having to sleep in a van for a couple of months in New York and going

“For a long time, I’ve believed in going out there and doing things, instead of just thinking or wondering about doing them” him international attention, to animated efforts such as Zootopia and the liveaction version of The Jungle Book. His upcoming ventures include a part in the big-screen adaptation of Andrew Lloyd Webber’s musical Cats – in a cast that counts Taylor Swift, Ian McKellen and Jennifer Hudson among its number – and a spot across from Dwayne ‘The Rock’ Johnson and Jason Statham in the latest instalment of the billion-dollar Fast and Furious franchise. “I really enjoyed this chance to work on a big action film because you learn a 22

to auditions in the morning and earning a little money DJing at night,” recalls Elba. “It was tough to get any decent work because no one liked my accent. I didn’t really feel settled until I got The Wire and that changed everything. I’m still shocked by how I’ve managed to reach these great heights after 25 years of hard work and a lot of struggles. But it makes me want to work harder than ever.” Given his new taste for big action films, what of his long-running fan-tease around the possibility of becoming Bond? It seems as though the possibility of Elba

stepping into Daniel Craig’s shoes and taking on the role of one of Britain’s most celebrated tough guys has been nothing more than good-natured ribbing after all. Craig’s stint as James Bond looks set to continue for at least one more outing, but Elba still seems like an obvious choice to be involved with 007, even if it’s not in the title role, as many first assumed. A film series with such long-standing pedigree surely amounts to exactly the kind of project that Elba is still determined to chase down on his seemingly indefatigable push to scale new heights professionally. On that score, he says with a laugh that he has become very good at managing his time and energy. “I try to plan things ahead and then it’s just a matter of organising your schedule and doing one project at a time. As long as you love what you’re doing, it never really feels like work.” When it comes to energy, he is certainly not lacking. “We all have dreams and desires, but we often don’t get to realise them. For a long time, I’ve believed in going out there and doing things, instead of just thinking or wondering about doing them. I like being able to go out and do all those things I’ve dreamed about. Life is for living.”

hat do you expect to see when you look at some Roman baths? Open skies above you? Almost certainly. Decaying colonnades and columns? Beyond doubt. But how about a bathing centurion easing himself into the waters? This isn’t a shoddy attempt at fancy dress role play staged by the local am-dram society. This is what you’ll see should you choose to a wear a virtual augmented reality application enabled by 5G network technology. Allowing visitors to travel back in time and experience Bath’s Roman baths in their original pomp, and with some of their original customers, this is one of the UK’s 5G Testbed and Trial projects demonstrating that there’s a lot more to this new technology than simply faster download speeds for your phone. Alongside these smart tourism projects, the power of 5G could also be about to bring seismic changes to healthcare, roads, railway lines, farming and manufacturing. Unlike 4G, which the UK was well behind the rest of Europe in implementing, Britain is firmly in the vanguard of 5G, with only Switzerland, Monaco, Jersey and San Marino ahead of us in rolling out the new technology. At the time of writing 5G is only available in London and other major UK cities. But the plan, spearheaded by the British Telecom owned EE mobile network, is for a full version of the new network to go live in 2022, with a more advanced version offering ultra-reliable low-latency signals arriving the following year. “In a way, 5G can be seen as a bridge from mobile technology to other industry segments,” said Enrico Salvatori, the European President at Qualcomm, a company which creates 5G friendly microchips for phones. “5G is a major innovation step in technology for the eco system,” he continues. “We are connecting humans to a scenario where we are

26

connecting all things. But in order to connect all things we need to have a network which is connecting one million accesses in square kilometres, and this is the algorithm behind 5G,” With its potential for mass connectivity, the chances of the kind of dreams that, even in the early years of this millennium, appeared to be in the realms of far-off science fiction are going to be a reality well within the next decade. Self-driving cars are already with us, although they are most commonly mentioned in the media when there’s a crash. 5G could eliminate these occurrences thanks to its infinitely faster speeds of connectivity. “We need to look at how long it takes for the message to be transmitted between sensors and then get to the computer in each car,” says Jane Rygaard Pederson, head of dedicated wireless networks at Nokia. “And then how long it takes for the computer to make a decision, and all of this has to be in less time than a human would take to make a decision: two milliseconds. We need a network supporting this, and 5G is that network.” So your self-driving car could get you to work in a risk-free manner each morning. The next question is, will there be any work left for you to do when you arrive? Over in Worcester, the Bosch factory, which makes heating and hot water products, became the very first 5G ‘smart factory’ back in February this year when a trial was launched with 5G powered sensors. What this means, in reality, is that the sensors act by seeking out preventative maintenance measures. This means that potential mechanical glitches can be rectified before they impact the production line. So, while the sensors get on with keeping our factories running nice and smoothly, the narrative suggests that we should all feel the benefits by being able to spend a lot more time focusing on leisure and travel.

TECH

Except that, with 5G, the more arduous elements of the latter may also be eliminated for good- particularly when it comes to hopping over to Singapore or San Francisco for a business meeting. The HoloLens 2 launches later this year. Despite the somewhat gauche name, this has the potential to be a genuine game changer. By using a combination of lasers and tiny electromechanical mirrors to “paint” images on to the retina, wearing the HoloLens allows businesses (the tech is currently marketed to companies rather than consumers) to hold face to face meetings despite being on different sides of the earth. Entirely, portable and wireless, the HoloLens is already in use by the elevator repair firm Thyseenkrupp, whose workers can now communicate with colleagues back at HQ all whilst simultaneously being able to get their hands dirty repairing faults on site. “We were able to troubleshoot in 20 minutes what would normally take two hours.” says Javier Sesma of Thyssenkrupp’s Elevator Innovation Centre. “Using mixed reality, somebody that could be kilometres away could enter into the real space of our technician.” As exciting as all these myriad innovations are there’s also a concomitant developments that move beyond these fastactualising 5G dreams. “5G is not just for refrigerators. It’s farm implements, it’s airplanes, it’s all kinds of different things that can actually kill people or that allow someone to reach into the network and direct those things to do what they want them to do.” So says Robert Spalding, a senior fellow at Hudson Institute which advises corporations on cyber threats. “It’s a completely different threat that we’ve never experienced before,” he adds. Enter Huawei, the Chinese company that is the undisputed global leader in 5G technology. Accused of being a conduit to Chinese intelligence, stories have long circulated about LU X U R Y L ON D ON .C O.U K

potentially mendacious implications. The African Union headquarters in Addis Ababa, having installed Huawei servers in their building, discovered only later that the servers were programmed to send potentially sensitive data back to Beijing every day. So if 5G can also lead to an increase in cybercrimes such as ransomware, identity theft, and data breaches then what measures are being taken to keep us secure? “Member states should carry out a national risk assessment, to identify potential security risks,” wrote Sir Julian King, European Commissioner for the Security Union, earlier this year. “These national risk assessments should be shared and woven into a European risk framework for 5G network security,” he continues. “As a third step, best practice in terms of national mitigation measures will be turned into a toolbox of measures to be taken at national and European level in order to mitigate security threats. All of this will be done in a new reinforced framework, bringing together key cyber-experts from across all member states.” Sir Julian intends to complete all of these steps by the end of this year: a remarkably tight timeframe but one that seems necessary given the lightning speed of change that we’re experiencing. And the security issues don’t currently seem to be dampening the wave of enthusiasm for 5G. A survey of 200 UK enterprises by the audit firm EY found that, in two years’ time the Internet of Things would feature as a spending domain for more than half of the participating companies... Even more impressively, a further 50 per cent of enterprises were preparing to upgrade to 5G connectivity in the next two years. After water power, electric power and computerisation, could 5G be revolutionary enough to be termed as the fourth wave of the industrial revolution? If so, then expect to see a lot more driverless cars, a lot more smart factories and, maybe, a few more (virtual) Roman centurions coming our way.

At Your Beat

MEET THE FOUNDER

Tuesday 23 & 30 July, 7.45-9.30pm

Carli Wheatley

At Your Beat is the UK’s number one and most inclusive dance and fitness company. Recommended by the likes of Vogue, Evening Standard, Esquire, MTV and Nike, this class all about personal growth, diversifying fitness and celebrating your individuality. Within a family-like environment dance instructor, Joelle D’fontaine, teaches you how to use dance to get fit in a fun, uplifting and energetic way. Suitable for all abilities, Joelle’s choreography will be accessible but never basic: “Don’t be a wallflower – be a Venus flytrap!” Come dressed in whatever makes you feel confident and lets you move freely. With easy-to-follow grooves in high intensity intervals, you’ll burn plenty of calories whilst dancing and having fun to the sound of dynamic music.

Why is self-love an important practise for your health? Because peace of mind is the ultimate goal, and it starts with self acceptance and through this acceptance we will hopefully learn to love ourselves as well as open that love up to others. We have to be okay with how we look and the minute we accept ourselves is when we can start to look after our minds and bodies properly. This means prioritising time to move, eating well, pushing ourselves, spending time laughing and more – there are so many elements to health. How do you improve your body image? Start by looking at yourself in the mirror and say “I love myself every day in every way, anything is possible for me, I love who I am becoming.” These strong messages of affirmation will really help you start to see yourself in a positive light. How can the busy people of Canary Wharf fit more exercise into their day? I believe in moving, we all have to move, so find ways to move that you enjoy. I hear many people say they hate exercise but if you want to have a body that can move freely when your 65+ without being in pain, then you have to move your joints and muscles to get circulation flowing. For those that love exercise and don’t have time, 30 minutes is enough 4-5 days a week. If that means you have to get up earlier then do it! Third Space at Canary Wharf opens at 5.30am for a reason. Barry’s has a class at 6am. If you need a little motivation, try a group session. There’s no excuse!

LOOK AHEAD... Next month, take part in HitBox Live with Sonja Moses – a live group empowerment experience combingnig boxing with HIIT training accompanied by a live DJ and MC. Sessions will be followed by meditation, relaxation and food. For more information and updates on Strong Island, please visit canarywharf.com or @strongislandeast on Instagram

ROKA WORDS SUNNA NASEER

A

n elegant space overlooking Canada Square with a beautiful backdrop of Canary Wharf’s skyline, ROKA is a place to enjoy shared food in a warm and friendly atmosphere. The restaurant’s name itself is derived from this principle: ‘ro’ meaning social gathering place and ‘ka’ meaning heat and burning fire. ROKA’s main cuisine is prepared using a robata grill – similar to a barbeque – originating from the fisherman off the northern coastal waters of Japan who would cook their fish over charcoal and share their bounty by passing it across boats using their oars. As we were shown to our table, we had the chance to see the chefs up-close as they mastered the various grills. From smokey fish and sizzling lamb to charcoaled vegetables, the delicious aromas filled the restaurant and did nothing to curb our appetites. Faced with an extensive and exciting menu, we were relieved when the waiter suggested he surprise us with a selection of their most recommended dishes. To start, we had traditional salted edamame beans along with one of ROKA’s signature dishes: yellowtail sashimi salad with truffle dressing. It was as perfect on taste as it was on presentation, in a beautifully arranged pinwheel of delicately sliced fish. The next course, however, truly took our breath away. Served on ice in a Japanese ceramic bowl, the sashimi platter was made to impress. Fresh slices of fish and grilled salmon came with a mini bowl of tuna tartare and caviar. With fresh florals and leaves to decorate as well as season the plate, it was almost too pretty to eat. The tuna tartare particularly stood out; a rich and flavourful dish mixed with quail eggs, accompanied by a crisp savoury wafer. Up next was a selection of maki rolls, nigiri and tempura, including a spicy tuna and avocado roll with jalapeño paste and one of my favourite dishes of the evening: buttery soft scallop nigiri. All the food so far was very light on the stomach, which left plenty of room to share a couple of meatier main dishes. Smokey melt-in-the-mouth black cod was expertly paired with a sweet miso sauce and spicy lamb cutlets were seasoned to perfection and enjoyed with barbecued broccoli stems. Just as we thought the night was over, we were treated with one final showpiece: the dessert platter. Much like the sashimi platter, this came served on ice with an array of colourful exotic fruits, a cherry flavoured crème brûlée and a warm chocolate pudding with melt-in-the-middle matcha centre. Finally, a delicious shot of citrus sake –apparently ten times more zesty than lime – is recommended to cleanse and refresh the palate.

What I Know About...

ENJOYING WINE

JAMES DAWSON, FOUNDER AND CEO OF HUMBLE GRAPE, DISCUSSES THE UNIVERSALITY OF WINE

“I

believe that wine is for everyone and not just for those who know a lot about it – that’s where the name Humble Grape came from. Even if you don’t know anything about wine but you enjoy it and want to know more, then we are the place for you. We go out of our way to make wine accessible to everyone. Once you can appreciate the effort that went into making the product and know a little bit more about why it tastes the way that it does, then when you’re drinking it, it’s much more fun and enjoyable. The idea for Humble Grape was born when I was lying on a beach with my wife and she suggested that I take my passion and turn it into a business. We’re very excited to be opening up our fifth wine bar in Canary Wharf. It’s a beautiful site on the river with outdoor seating. I used to work in the area and have always wanted to open up a quirky, independent brand here. The whole ethos of the business is based on sustainability. The wines we import are all organic and sustainably sourced. We love wines that are made in a very natural way so that they’ve got quite an interesting, strong flavour profile. It’s the same with our food. All our chefs have a mandate to get really high quality, free range, grass fed food.

JAMES DAWSON

38

People are becoming a lot more experimental with their wine. We source wine from places like Serbia and Hungary. At the moment it is very niche, but I’ve seen a recent trend for orange wines that are fermented on the skin. A lot of factors affect how wine tastes. If you’re drinking red wine, for example, and then you have something salty, the wine will taste a lot sweeter afterwards. The same wine will taste quite bitter if you’ve had something sweet or sugary. That’s why I’m not strict with wine pairings; it’s not as simple as steak with red or fish with white. It’s more about what the individual loves. I don’t believe in following these unwritten rules about specific wines that should be paired with specific foods. Everyone has different palettes and tastes. At the end of the day, if you want to drink rosé with a steak then do it. One thing I would say is that if you’re having a light meal, match it with a light wine and vice versa. But don’t be too prescriptive about it. Always trust your instincts. If you’re drinking a wine and you’re enjoying it, have a look at the label to find out what region it’s from and what the grape is. Make a mental note of those things for future wines you try. Don’t let someone tell you what you should like. Experiment yourself – try different wines and go from there, trusting your own judgement.”

A Slice of

Heaven RADIO ALICE PIZZERIA OPENS A NEW BRANCH IN JUBILEE PLACE, BRINGING ORGANIC SOURDOUGH PIZZA AND SEASONAL MENUS TO DINERS IN CANARY WHARF

C

onceived in Bologna and transported to the streets of London, Radio Alice pizzeria delivers fresh sourdough pizza topped with sensational seasonal ingredients. Newly opened in Jubilee Place, the Canary Wharf branch will be the restaurant’s third pizzeria in London, and 13th across the UK and Italy. Radio Alice was founded by Matteo and Salvatore Aloe, two brothers who moved from Calabria to Bologna to study, and like all penniless students, ate a lot of pizza. Wanting pizza that was made and served with care and tasted great, they decided to take matters into their own hands, opening their first restaurant, originally named Berberè, in 2010. Many years later, along with their friend Emma King, a co-founder of GAIL’s Bakery, Radio Alice opened in London’s Hoxton Square, shortly followed by Clapham Common. Their mission: to serve delicious no-frills pizza, using the best, organic ingredients, served in a welcoming atmosphere. Diners at the new Canary Wharf pizzeria will taste Matteo’s signature sourdough pizza made fresh every day using organic stoneground flour. Matteo says; “We’re really excited about the opportunity to be opening at Canary Wharf in such a bustling location. We’re looking forward to being a friendly oasis where you can enjoy fast, organic sourdough pizza, cold wine and super music.” Alongside the pizza, wine will be sourced from small Italian organic producers. The house wine list will be bag-inbox; using less glass so it’s better for the environment, with the same joy. Libera Terra (Free Earth) wine comes from a co-operative turning confiscated mafia land into organic and high-quality vineyards. The beer list will be short and tasty, sourced from local breweries including a bespoke Radio Alice IPA made with Beer52, the UK beer club. The 160 seat pizzeria at Canary Wharf was designed by two young Bolognese companies, Comunicattive and Studio Rizoma, in the brand’s simple and creative style. The pizzeria’s design turns up the volume of the original materials in the building, layered with signature pop colours and a dreamlike mural. Radio Alice, Jubilee Place

MEET THE FOUNDERS

Matteo & Salvatore Aloe What varieties are you offering for summer? This summer some of our favourites are aubergine, tomato, fiordilatte mozzarella, smoked ricotta, basil and walnut pesto pizza; ginger pig sausage, tzatziki sauce, cucumber and parsley pizza; and courgette ribbons, stilton, fiordilatte mozzarella and pickled onions is good too. We’re excited about the grilled watermelon, plum tomatoes, cucumber, feta cheese, sliced red onion, fresh mint and basil salad.

Where did the name Radio Alice come from? The original Radio Alice was a 1970s pirate radio station from Bologna; an open broadcast, inviting locals to take over the air waves with their choice of music or free speech. We’re based in Bologna, so the idea to celebrate this unusual icon of the city was, for us, a great idea. Where do you source your ingredients from? Many of our ingredients are from organic Italian producers. We work closely with Alce Nero the co-operative of 1,000 organic farmers to source our flour, tomato, honey and olive oil for us. Organic fiordilatte mozzarella come from Puglia, south Italy, the region where fiordilatte is typical. The producer is called Querceta and is a family business with free-range cows that produce milk in naturally quantity. We source our fruit and vegetables from Natoora who specialise in local and Italian high quality produce. Ginger Pig is our trusted butcher and Buchananas cheese is our great British cheese.

canarywharf.com

What are some of your most popular pizzas? Since we started in 2010, we’ve had a prosciutto, burrata, fiordilatte mozzarella, and house made orange zest oil pizza. We tried to take it off once and nearly had a riot! Tell us more about your bag-in-box house wine. All the choices we are making are sustainable! 100% of our wine and soft drinks are organic to reduce the impact on the environment, farmer and customer. Our house pour is from Libera Terra (meaning Free Earth); it’s a cooperative turning confiscated mafia land into organic and high-quality vineyards. Both of our house wines are five litre bag-in-box wines to avoid extra bottles and packaging. We also chose not to sell bottled water for the same reason, to help the impact on the Earth. What’s for dessert? For summer we are making Pizza Profiteroles filled with organic peanut butter, ice cream and topped with organic and chocolate hazelnut sauce.

ach year, at least eight million tonnes of plastics leak into the ocean – which is equivalent to dumping the contents of one garbage truck into the ocean every minute”, reports The New Plastics Economy: Rethinking the Future of Plastics, a study produced by the Ellen MacArthur Foundation and the World Economic Forum. If nothing is done, the report estimates that by 2025 the ocean will have a ratio of one tonne of plastic to three tonnes of fish, and by 2050 there’ll be more plastics than fish (by weight). If that’s not frightening enough, research figures also reveal that more than one million seabirds and 100,000 sea mammals are killed by ocean pollution every year. The onus is therefore on each and every one of us – from the fishermen in tiny coastal villages to the massive cruise liners through to the owners of the world’s biggest yachts – to help in the big ocean clean-up. Thankfully, there are big fish among those leading the charge. During the Superyachts.com Top 100 event held in London earlier this year, discussions focused on sustainability and the steps shipbuilders are taking to protect the marine environment. One major initiative unanimously taken on board is the use of hybrid propulsion to reduce carbon emissions, and this typically requires using two or more energy sources: electric turbines, diesel, LNG (liquid natural gas), battery banks, propellers and waterjets. With the right combination of hybrid systems, yachts can potentially reduce fuel consumption by up to 30 per cent, improve manoeuvrability, and also reduce noise pollution by cruising silently at low speeds. Feadship’s 83m Savannah is the first superyacht to use an eco-friendly hybrid propulsion platform encompassing propellers and azimuthing thrusters for power, electric motors and diesel engines for drive, and gensets and batteries for energy storage. The shipyard’s new facility in Amsterdam is also designed with eco-friendly features, including more than 2,000 solar panels, LED lighting, a three-tier ventilation system and the innovative use of district heating, which harnesses excess energy from nearby factories.

German yacht builder Lürssen has developed a filtration system that lowers levels of nitrogen oxide (NOx), the gas responsible for forming smog and acid rain, which are both detrimental to the tropospheric ozone layer. Lürssen also pioneered the use of waste engine heat to operate a vessel’s onboard desalination system for drinking water. Lürssen, Feadship and Benetti have also pledged commitment to ocean conservation by supporting the Blue Marine Foundation (BLUE), a UK-based charity whose mission is to tackle overfishing and promote marine biodiversity. Its manifesto is to place 10 per cent of the oceans under active and effective protection by 2020, and 30 per cent by 2030. Benetti’s clients are offered two options for supporting BLUE: a one-off payment at the signing of a yacht construction contract, whereby a percentage of the contract price can be donated to the NGO, or an annual donation for every thousand miles sailed. Yacht owners serious about ocean conservation can join the Blue Marine Yacht Club (BMYC), which is under the patronage of H.S.H. Prince Albert II of Monaco. Being a member helps to create a powerful, environmentally conscious yachting community comprising yacht builders, marinas, brokers, owners and suppliers. Together they can raise awareness and contribute funds to support BLUE’s initiatives, and also have the rare opportunity to witness first-hand the benefits of their contribution by visiting BLUE’s projects around the world.

DESIGNING THE OCEAN’S FUTURE

Cutting-edge yacht designers are also stirring clients towards more sustainable options. “Today’s superyacht owners are younger, and more in tune with the climate crisis around us, and therefore either request, or are open to, innovative, sustainable yacht design,” says Andrew Winch, founder and creative director at Winch Design. “Wherever possible, design decisions are made to have minimal negative impact on the environment or a positive impact on local communities around the world. Materials will be sourced locally to reduce the carbon footprint from freighting, as profit is fed back into the local economy. Rare accessories must have a Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES) certificate, to show their provenance and to try and control the overuse of rare materials.” Composite hulls and carbon fibre masts are also being introduced, and eco-friendly alternatives to teakwood, which is traditionally used for decking and is at risk of becoming endangered, are currently in development. The Winch Design team is also encouraging clients to consider sailing yachts, which offer all the luxuries available from a motor yacht, but with the benefit of generating no carbon emissions under sail. A NEW WAVE IN YACHTING

A new age in yachting is dawning, as luxury exploration vessels catch the imagination of intrepid clients searching for adventure in remote destinations. Already making big waves in the industry is REV, short for Research and Expedition Vessel. 44

When this 181.6m leviathan, owned by Norwegian billionaire Kjell Inge Røkke and part of the REV Ocean programme, hits the water in 2021, she will revolutionise the way superyachts are built and used. REV has been designed to allow up to 60 scientists to conduct scientific research into the entire marine ecosystem using stateof-the-art equipment, while also providing the luxuries and space typically offered by large charter yachts. Facilities include classrooms, an auditorium, two helipads, and the all-important underwater exploration vehicles. According to Espen Oeino, REV’s designer, “One of the fundamental concepts of the vessel has been to share information being collected and produced onboard, thus setting a new standard for transparency and sharing of scientific data.” For guests, the invaluable experience on board this exemplary vessel is not just about sailing to unusual destinations; it’s about interacting with scientists, learning from their research, and sharing these experiences to encourage others to support REV Ocean’s research programmes. With 30 crew onboard, REV will be available for private charter for up to 36 guests. All proceeds from charters will go towards funding marine research programmes. Private yacht owners can help by attaching simple systems to their vessels to enable collection of data on water temperature, salinity and oxygen concentration. “Due to the size and scale

F E AT U R E

of the ocean it is near impossible to collect data at all points,” explains Oystein Mikelborg, REV’s operations director, “but if the yachting community contributed regular streams of data from wherever they are cruising it would help fill gaps that research vessels won’t have the chance to fill.” HEAL THE OCEANS, SAVE THE WORLD

ANTI-CLOCKWISE FROM RIGHT LONDON TO MONACO CHARITY CYCLE; OVERFISHING COURTESY OF BLUE MARINE FOUNDATION; SCHOOL OF FISH COURTESY OF BLUE MARINE FOUNDATION

Saving the oceans, let alone saving the world, is a daunting task. This is why organisations such as the BLUE, REV Ocean and other conservation programmes around the world are taking bold steps to get everyone involved. And they need support not just from the yachting community, but also from the private and public sectors – including giant cruise companies and cargo ships, whose vessels have contributed much to the pollution of our seas. Saving our oceans can only be achieved by working together on a global scale. With the superyacht industry leading the way, let’s hope others follow. PORT FERDINAND BARBADOS Located in the yachting hub of Barbados, Port Ferdinand combines ultra-spacious villas with a world-class marina, wrapped up in Bajan finery. Often referred to as the ‘Platinum Coast’, the West Coast of the island is renowned for its calm and clear waters. Its proud inhabitants, hospitable nature and unrivalled scenery attract the yachting fraternity from far and wide over the course of the winter season, as does its yearround warm climate. While the marina itself is restricted to dockage for smaller vessels, large superyacht moorings are available in the bay just off the new Nikki Beach Club, which opened its doors in Port Ferdinand in 2018 – the first luxury beach club on the island. Yacht berths are paired with the marina’s on-site yacht concierge service, which provides a wide range of incredible activities organised on request, such as swimming with turtles, snorkel trips, scuba diving experiences, candlelit dinners in high-end restaurants, and private catamaran cruises or fishing charters. Named after a distinctive tree that is indigenous to Barbados, one of which can be found right next to the spa, the Sandbox Tree Spa is located in a corner of the lush natural gully that cocoons the marina. Using the renowned Bamford Botanical Product range, treatments can be carried out in the spa, within the gully or in-suite in the Port Ferdinand homes.

PORT FERDINAND RESIDENCES Geared towards those with a more aquatic leaning, Port Ferdinand – a gated community with 24/7 security – offers prime real estate and accommodation just outside the main tourist hotspots of the island. The Port Ferdinand residences have been carefully curated for maximum comfort and leisure, from the oversized indoor/outdoor living spaces to the yacht slips which come as standard with each residence. In addition to sweeping panoramic views of the Caribbean Sea, a wealth of amenities is on offer, including waterfront eateries and bars, a fitness centre and 1.4 acres of pristine golden sandy beaches.

its snorkelling, nearby Sawa-i-lau Island is a favoured anchorage for its underwater caves. Two hours north is Yasawa-i-Ra, home to Fiji’s white powder Champagne Beach, while the more adventurous can try their luck at an infamous kava ceremony. Just 20 minutes’ drive from Nadi International airport, the marina village boasts several high-end hotels, and an 18-hole golf course. It also plays host to an inflatable water park, mini golf and bungee, racquet club, and nine residential precincts. In the last three years considerable modifications have been made to the marina, including the addition of a brand new Bellingham Marine floating jetty for visiting craft, and Port Denarau has become recognised as a destination in its own right for superyacht owners and guests looking to enjoy the very best of all that Fiji has to offer.

PULLMAN NADI BAY RESORT & SPA Positioned in a secluded corner of local-favourite Wailoaloa Beach, Pullman Nadi Bay Resort & Spa is shining a spotlight on a largely unexplored stretch of shore. Newly opened in April 2019, it offers 180-degree, uninterrupted ocean views, bookended by vistas of Fiji’s most recognised mountain, The Sleeping Giant. Just 10 minutes from Port Denarau, it serves as the ideal resting place for guests keen to embark on shoreside exploration as well as enjoy downtime at the decadent spa. Its eclectic bar and dining scene takes inspiration from big city cuisine and cocktail trends, but best is reserved for its 12 stunning beachfront suites, each with direct access to the water’s edge.

A state-of-the-art floating crew lounge – Ocean Club – now includes a spa and business centre, while the newly opened Garden Bar Bistro provides a vibrant addition to the marina village. It provides year-round berthing options for vessels up to 80m in length, regularly hosting the likes of 73m superyacht Dragonfly. The marina’s recent acquisition of neighbouring Coral Sea Resort also marks the first move in a strategic merger of Coral Sea and Abell Point, with the the two entities becoming known as the Coral Sea Marina|Resort from 1 July 2019. In addition, the opening of a 2.5-hectare garden space - The Coral Sea Gardens – will heighten guests’ experience of the marina resort village, as well as provide a unique space within the township. LUŠTICA BAY MONTENEGRO

THE CHEDI LUŠTICA BAY Combining discreet luxury with Montenegro’s natural warmth and authenticity, The Chedi Luštica Bay is set on the waterfront of the Marina Village. Filled with light and reflecting the colours and movements of the ocean, the hotel welcomes weary travellers to rest their aching 50

feet. Sea views take centre stage throughout, with each of the 111 rooms benefitting from a private terrace. Boasting three restaurants, a private beach and an outdoor heated infinity pool – ideal for a morning dip – The Chedi plays host to a range of boutique designer outlets, so guests can always look and feel their best whether poolside or cruising the high seas.

Located just a stone’s throw from the UNESCO world heritage Bay of Kotor, the new boutique resort of Luštica Bay combines the gentle traditions of Montenegrin coastal living with state-of-the-art contemporary facilities and a sustainable future. Protecting waters that are among the cleanest in Europe, the marina is a pinnacle of sustainable design. It offers a range of services and facilities, as well as 24-hour yacht assistance to help sailors on their way. With one of the world’s most beautiful sailing spots on its doorstep, there is much to explore. Mighty mountains and placid waters, ancient routes to the historic towns of the Bay of Kotor, waterfront Konoba restaurants, natural coves and hidden caves all await discovery, while the coasts of Croatia, Italy and Greece are just a short sail away. Construction of the town’s second neighbourhood and what will become its new cosmopolitan town centre – Centrale – began in 2018. Strategically located at the entrance to the site and at the junction of all its major roads, Centrale will act as the natural heart of Luštica and as an important connector to nearby towns of the region. Nurturing healthy indooroutdoor living, Centrale will be woven with greenery – parks, piazzas, native trees and plants. The historic remains of an Austro-Hungarian fortification will become a cultural public space and viewing platform with arresting views of the ocean beyond.

PHUKET YACHT HAVEN - THAILAND

MARINA DI VALLETTA - MALTA

With its close proximity to Phangnga Bay and the surrounding majestic limestone islands, Phuket Yacht Haven in Thailand is the ultimate superyacht launching pad. With the Surin Islands to the north, and a stone’s throw from the lush hillside Layan Residences by Anantara (equipped with a 24-hour live-in butler service), it provides end-to-end luxury on the water. Yacht Haven regularly hosts superyachts up to 100m in length, with Talisman Maiton, Lionheart and Pacific all regular sights in 2019.

The newly launched port Marina di Valetta is the latest addition to the historic island of Malta. Located on the edge of the Baroque fortress city of Valletta, and neighbouring the home port for Heesen’s 45m superyacht Amore Mio, it provides the perfect base from which to explore myriad treasured coves and crystal-clear bays. Accommodating up to 27m yachts within its 250 berths, it also hosts alongside transit berthing for yachts of up to 50m and provides direct access to Valletta’s cobbled streets – the first grid system of its kind – with elegantly converted palazzo hotels such as Domus Zamittello.

ALSO WORTH A VISIT

EDINBURGH MARINA - SCOTLAND

CRYSTALBROOK MARINA - CAIRNS

Located in Granton’s Western Harbour, Edinburgh Marina (once completed) will be able to accommodate yachts up to 50m within a stunning new waterside development. Containing uninterrupted views of the coastline and the Firth of Forth, this world-class project will contain new homes centred around the marina’s 373 berths and the new Spa Hotel. Just two miles from Edinburgh’s iconic city centre, the marina is also perfectly placed to enable superyachts to cruise the northern ‘cool route’, exploring the colder climes of Norway, Finland, and the Arctic peninsula of Svalbard.

The gateway to the Great Barrier Reef from the north, and home to the deep ocean water outcrops of ribbon-like reef structures, Crystalbrook Superyacht Marina is Queensland’s northernmost marina. A base from which to charter superyachts Spirit and Sahana, it plays host to some of Port Douglas’ most popular bars and restaurants, shops and a full-service slipway. It is also privy to a brand new $20 million, 1120 tonne mobile boat hoist – the largest in the world – putting the Cairns region on par with the likes of Singapore in terms of superyacht maintenance services.

SUSTAINABLE SWIMWEAR Plastic polluting our oceans is a very real threat to marine life. But now several swimwear companies are turning the debris found floating in the sea into something much more positive. Sustainable swimwear is big news this summer, especially when it comes to kids’ clothing. High street hero Marks & Spencer has launched a fantastic range for youngsters made using recycled plastic, transformed into a polyester fibre that is mega-durable and has been endorsed by the British Skin Foundation with UPF 50+ sun protection (marksandspencer.com). 72

Other brands such as Sunuva (sunuva.com) and Accessorize (Canada Place) have both gone down a similar path, creating sustainable collections that are environmentally-friendly and still super stylish. Beanie & Bear, which is loved for its ultra-cool prints and designs, is using SeaQual and EcoNyl recycled fabrics that, thanks to their innovative construction, are twice as resistant to chlorine, suntan lotions and oils (beanieandbear.com). It’s good to know that by choosing to buy these trunks and costumes for your little ones you are helping to protect the very beaches they will be playing on while wearing them.

hile the larger cities and towns like Playa del Carmen, Cancún, and, of course, the capital Mexico City might draw in the tourists, Mexico’s lesser known municipalities and villages have just as much to offer. A nine-day tour of the south peninsula can provide a rich offering of crafts, cuisine and culture away from the masses and closer to the locals. Tequila and tacos galore, your stomach certainly won’t be wanting for more, particularly with a stay at one of the luxury resorts operated by Hamak Hotels.

THREE DAYS IN PUEBLA

About two and a half hours southeast of Mexico City is the dinky student town Puebla, centred around the leafy Zócalo de Puebla plaza. Proudly declaring its mole poblano, an ancient Mexican dish, the best in the country, you might as well sample some here. The rice and chicken dish is covered in a thick, rich puddle of sweet chilli and chocolate and sprinkled with sesame seeds. Merely strolling up and down the multi-coloured, chocolate box streets and numerous antiques stores will keep you more than entertained. Don’t miss the ‘Street of Sweets’. Bright pink archways are nestled together down this lone cobbled lane with ‘dulces’ piled high to the delight of milk-toothed children or sweet-toothed adults. Alongside the candied fruits and confectionery, of which there are multiple samples to try, you’ll also find the traditional tourist tat of keyrings, hats and clothes. When it’s time for a little pick-me-up, prop up the bright marigold La Pasita bar with locals by sampling its in-house sweet liqueur (its namesake), made of raisins and decorated with a cube of fresh goat’s cheese. Be warned though, there is no time to hang about; doors shut promptly at 5.30pm. While on a tour of the town, include a drive-by of the antiques markets (open on Sundays); the creaking, wooden Palafoxiana library, the oldest library in the Americas; and the impressive gold-ceilinged Church of San Francisco. The Amparo Museum has works of art by famed Mexican Surrealist sculptor Alejandro Colunga – see his five-headed bench in the museum’s courtyard. If you don’t speak Spanish, the exhibits won’t keep you occupied for long so head up to the rooftop restaurant for a 360-degree view of the town’s terracotta rooftops.

The Hotel Cartesiano is a short stroll from the centre and has a more sophisticated approach to hospitality than some of its neighbours

At the end of a long day, the Hotel Cartesiano is a short stroll from the centre with a more sophisticated approach to hospitality than some of its neighbours. It is made up of four redeveloped grand family houses; the largest was once a tile factory and remnants of the delicate paintings and ceramic artistry are thoughtfully embedded into the walls of the bedrooms and communal areas. The spa area, restaurant with roof terrace and downstairs café provide the finest Mexican cuisine. THREE DAYS IN CHOCHOLÁ

A short flight east and you arrive at the small and friendly town of Chocholá. Winding dirt tracks, rusty signs, bicycles and long grass are the main attractions here, but that is part of its charm. Turn off down a discreet road and you’ll find Chablé Resort & Spa Yucatán set on a grand 750acre estate. It’s time to turn off your phone and unplug the internet as staff receive you at the gates and bundle you into a buggy for a tour of the steamy jungle-like terrain. The resort is made up of 36 casitas and four family villas, each with a private pool; there’s almost no need to leave your abode or even pack your swimsuit. Surrounded by tropical plants, the accommodation is an oasis of calm. Tea is brought each morning to the door, which can be drunk as soon as you’ve managed to pull yourself out of the four-poster bed and draw back the blackout blinds. The shower is quite the experience, too – cover yourself in soapy suds with only a glass door LU X U R Y L ON D ON .C O.U K

separating you from the leafy outdoors, very much inviting you to wash al fresco. In the main part of the building, there are three restaurants to choose from: the Asian-inspired Ixi’im, the poolside Ki’ol or the Spa Restaurant with its healthy vegetarian-only menu and freshly-pressed juices. These wholesome offerings, alongside the clipped lawns, the old 19thcentury stone buildings, calming water features and palm-tree covered pool, are sure to relax your soul. As well as being the perfect location to unwind, it’s also not too far from the buzzing town of Merida, the Yucatán state capital, nicknamed the ciudad blanca (white city). There’s the food market piled high with fruits and vegetables; a rich calendar of dancing and music that take over the town square most evenings; and a few trendy bars, such as La Negrita with its Wild West swing doors and an impressive array of tequila and mezcal. If it’s ancient civilisation you are after,

about an hour away is the Mayan city of Uxmal with pyramids much like the more renowned Chichén Itzá. Bucket-list activities should also include a visit to a cenote. Cenote X’kekén and Samula are probably the largest and provide a good pit stop for your car journey to the next destination. These underground pools of water decorated by stalagmites and stalactites (a point here for those who can remember the direction of each) have been transformed into a tourist attraction of winding wooden steps and pop-up shops. A word to the wise: these cenotes look very little like the glamorous snaps on Instagram and you’ll need to grapple with tourists and bats to get a shot on your own, not to mention apply a hefty session of Photoshop to your picture in order to get the perfect aquamarine snap. From $974 per night, chableresort.com 81

THREE DAYS IN PUNTA MAROMA

Swap to the other side of Mexico’s shores and you have the Caribbean Sea lapping on the quiet beachfront of Punta Maroma. Just north of the bright lights of tourist hotspots Playa del Carmen and Tulum, this area is another location for those wanting to retreat from the hustle and bustle. Chablé Resort & Spa Maroma opened its doors at the end of last year and offers guests a prime seaside location and relaxing spa sessions. The villas don’t quite live up to the private extravagance of the Yucatán property, but the draw here is the pristine white sandy beach. Hours can be spent sunbathing by the infinity pool or down on the sand with a friendly waiter occasionally topping up your glass. And definitely sample some of the pink tuna ceviche, which is delicately placed on a perfectly symmetrical tostada, sprinkled with seeds and spring onions and drizzled in lime. Once again, the local area is bristling with ancient secrets. Just over an hour away is Tulum for its cocktail bars and shopping, but nestled on the beach right next to it are the ruins of an old Mayan settlement that served as a major trading post and where you can now buy tickets to have a wander and soak up the history. On the way back to your palatial villa in Chablé, you could always take in the pumping music and vodka shots of Playa del Carmen’s nightlife; but why do that when you could snuggle up in the pristine sheets of your king-sized bed and be up for sunrise in your own private pool? he Maldives is undeniably one of the most romantic destinations on earth: sunset cruises are accompanied by playful dolphins, dinner à deux is taken on isolated beaches and there’s nothing quite so breathtaking as waking up with your loved one to those views over an endless azure sea. Surprisingly, perhaps, what makes this island region so perfect for loved-up couples is also just the ticket for single travellers looking for a reboot. Found in the North Malé Atoll, One&Only Reethi Rah is one of the Maldives’ most-established resorts renowned for its luxe vibe and imaginative hospitality aimed at couples and solo travellers alike. Occupying one of the largest private islands in the area, the resort – its name means ‘beautiful island’ in Maldivian – has long set the benchmark for luxury in the Maldives and, as a consequence, is a favourite among a glitzy A-list crowd. The Beckhams, for instance, regularly book out the uber-private Grand Sunset Residence (which comes with its own chef, wine cellar and beach cinema). The other 121 villas do not disappoint, however, and are found dotted across 12 idyllic beaches – with some perched over the ocean, with their own infinity pools. Interiors by Jean-Michel Gathy are seductive. Indonesian in style, the thatched homes are grand spaces with vaulted, bamboo ceilings, sunken baths with scenic views, and layers of stylish details. Luxury textiles come in the shades of an exotic sunset (ochre, burnt orange and gold), Art Deco-style dressing tables have a genius built-in mini-fridge for cosmetics (naturally) and floor-to-ceiling windows open out to pristine, private beaches or – in the case of the over-water villas – to terraces from which you can dive in to swim with manta rays and rainbow-coloured fish. Meanwhile there is plenty here for honeymooners to croon over together, there’s also a dizzying array of activities for family, friends and solos to enjoy – from the climbing wall to the tennis courts, from the dive centre to the FIFA-certified football pitch. You can learn to paint in the artist’s studio or explore the island on your own bike (there’s 6km of coastline to discover). A must is one of the day excursions with the resident marine biologist where you can dive with whale sharks or learn more about the Hawksbill Turtle population. Meanwhile, afternoons can be spent snorkelling on the resort’s own house reef, where you’ll swim among white-tip sharks and butterfly fish. Despite its size, throughout the resort there’s still a holistic and intimate feel. There are 800 staff here, from more than 35 nations, but you wouldn’t know it. They move seamlessly around – like a tightly choreographed ballet – with each staff member greeting guests with a special One&Only ‘signature’ – a placing of their right hand over their heart. Be warned: by the end of your trip, you’ll be automatically doing this, too. The sprawling destination ESPA spa is where this sense of wellbeing is really harnessed and it is just the place to lose hours, if not days, to reenergise yourself again. While there are locally-inspired treatments, such as the ‘Essence’, which utilises some of the island’s many home-grown coconuts, taken from its 20,000 trees, it is best known for the all-encompassing spa journeys, which bring in an impressive line-up of experts. Yoga

guru Dr Gopal Govindasamy and Dr Buathon Thienarrom, who specialises in traditional Chinese medicine, are past visitors, while Parisian foot expert Bastien Gonzalez also has an outpost here. The latest, dubbed Sleep Journey, calls upon a variety of disciplines, from beauty to nutrition, and aims to de-stress even the most burnt-out urbanite. You enter the spa via a lofty temple-like space, complete with tinkling fountains and Balinese carved wood features. Thatched treatment villas are found dotted around the tropical gardens, with some looking out to the beach. Here, your session begins with a Sleep Ritual assessment, in which a ‘sleep trainer’ looks closely at your sleeping patterns and develops a tailored approach to address your needs, also checking in with you during your stay. The first step is the sleep meditation, which focuses on breathing and visualisation techniques to the sound of soothing music. This is followed by the Bastien Gonzalez Re-Foundation foot treatment, which rejuvenates limbs with a black diamond scrub, followed by an intense foot and leg massage to relieve muscle tension and ‘heavy legs’. If you’re not drifting off already, the full-body massage will send you on your way. Releasing deep-seated muscular tension, using a combination of hot stones and warm relaxing oil, this is uber-nurturing, and finishes with a blissful scalp massage to clear the mind. Healthy eating is also touched on, with the resort’s Beach Club – which focuses on antioxidant ingredients (such as pomegranate, coconut, pumpkin seeds and avocado) – launching new lunchtime Bliss Bowls. For breakfast, meanwhile, there’s a dedicated Superfood Counter in the Reethi Restaurant where you can concoct your own healthy start to the day with a huge range of vitamin-packed juices to try. Come night time, there is an array of restaurants to choose from. Tapasake is a glamourous spot, with a sushi bar and tapas-style Japanese menu – chefs cook up a storm at your table, which are positioned over the water. The Boho Fanditha Bar is the perfect place to watch the magnificent Maldivian sunsets, hurricane lamps, colourful Arabian rugs and crystal chandeliers are suspended from palm trees and you dine in white tents by the ocean or on giant cushions on the beach, dipping into the Middle Eastern menu of mezze, grills and Arabic cuisine. For Italian cuisine, head to Rabarbaro, where you’ll eat the best lobster and saffron risotto of your life. Meanwhile, hidden away in a secret garden and lit by flickering candle light, is Botanica, a true highlight of Reethi Rah. Beautifully atmospheric, you eat amid lush plants and next to the fragrant kitchen garden. There’s an orchid house, filled with the delicate blooms and a potager, where you can also dine. Start your evening off with a cocktail at the Gin Bar – there are 34 varieties to choose from, then select your meal from the simple, yet inspiring, menu. With an emphasis on freshness and seasonality, dishes include octopus with ash- baked potato, reef fish Maldivian curry and king prawn from ‘the fire’ with handpicked vegetables and organic red rice. Back in your villa, you’ll discover a range of sleep treats waiting for you – such as mini ESPA products, calming tea and personalised sleep music. Just the right combination to ensure the sweetest of dreams.

What makes this island so perfect for couples is also just the ticket for single travellers looking to reboot

rom the rooftop terrace you can see the sunlight glinting off the Duomo – Florence’s jewel in its crown – and all around are the undulating hills and endless fields of Tuscany: their tones of green, amber and gold the basis for many an artist’s inspiration. Found in the Chianti countryside, Villa di Bagnolo provides its own unique form of inspiration. Not your average home-from-home, it is instead a historic and regal manor house, full of antiques and cosy corners, and which is available to hire for glorious summers under the Tuscan sun. Thanks to its idyllic setting, in the Colombaia Wine and Olive Oil Estate, which dates back to 1700, it also captures the best Tuscan scenes any artist has laid down on canvas. Laden lemon trees line the avenue to the house, while rosemary, thyme and basil scent the air. Set in 54 acres of olive groves and vineyards, you throw open your shutters at sunrise to take in the views and you can spend hours wandering around the manicured gardens and fragrant estate. As well as a swimming pool, there are tennis courts, table tennis and a range of outdoor games to keep all

mere holiday rentals in pretty locations. Guests are therefore able to access local experiences, culinary classes, wine tasting and customised tours to get to know this slice of Italy even better. Tuscany is, of course, the birthplace of one of the world’s most famous artists –Leonardo da Vinci – and this year the region is marking the 500th anniversary of his death with a range of exhibitions and events on throughout the area. With Florence a short 20 minute drive away, it’s not difficult to explore yourself, but offering an indepth look at the life of the artist is the ‘Follow In The Footsteps of Leonardo da Vinci’ which guests can exclusively book and which takes you on a seamless trace of his life. You begin where the artist began – with a trip to Anchiano, and to the farmhouse where da Vinci was born in 1452. As well as reproductions of some of his drawings, there is a rather bizarre life-sized hologram who narrates his life story. Nearby is Vinci, where you can see more about the artist’s roots in mechanics with the ‘Leonardo’s Machines’ exhibit at the Museo Leonardiano. Then it’s on to Florence where the artist spent his early life and some of his later years. Included is an in-depth tour of the Uffizi Gallery, where some of his famous works are kept – such as the Baptism of Christ, The Annunciation, and the Adoration of the Magi. Meanwhile at Florence’s town hall, The Palazzo Vecchio, you can see the lost fresco of the Battaglia

Laden lemon trees line the avenue to the house, while rosemary, thyme and basil scent the air di Anghiari. Finishing off, the tour continues in the rolling Montalbano Hills, where Leonardo took inspiration for many of his works. You can also trek up Monte Ceceri, where he tested his flying machines, and where he is commemorated on Piazzale Leonardo, a panoramic terrace, named after the artist due to his experiment with human flight that took place here. After a day exploring, you’ll head back to Villa di Bagnolo, making a pitstop for gelato in the nearby town on Impruneta (Cappelletti Paola serves a mean stracciatella). The manor house’s stone floors, twinkling Venetian chandeliers and elegant rooms give a cooling welcome – as do Barbara and Stefano Beltrami, the sister and brother team whose family have long owned the estate. There’s a chance that you’ll be beckoned into the original subterranean cellar for an impromptu tasting by Stefano, who looks after the artisan wine-making. With its own Sangiovese, Colorino and Chianti wines, which are seriously good, you’ll no doubt find your own muse. Stay at Villa di Bagnolo, with Tuscany Now & More (www.tuscanynowandmore.com, 020 7684 8888) from £4,452 for seven days for eight people (maximum capacity of 14 people). Lauren Alaina

NASHVILLE MEETS LONDON Saturday 27 July, 2-10pm Canada Square Park Free Canary Wharf’s annual celebration of all things country returns for a fourth fantastic year. Now a well-established trendsetter on the country music scene, Nashville Meets London brings together the freshest emerging talent, showcasing established artists and budding stars from both the US and UK. This year’s line-up includes Glee cast member and America’s Got Talent semi-finalist, Noah Guthrie and is headlined by the amazing Lauren Alaina, a much-loved competitor on American Idol. Nashville Meets London 2019 is going to be one festival you just can’t miss.

IN THE SINGER’S WORDS... “I got really serious about music when I was around 16 or 17. I had been around music my whole life really, although I didn’t think being a musician alone would be a possibility for me. But then I started doing these cover songs online and started getting traction that way and it became more serious.

Noah Guthrie

Being on Glee a couple of years later was really fantastic. It wasn’t something I was really looking for – I wasn’t an actor or anything like that – but the opportunity just fell out of the sky for me. It was amazing. There were some really great songs and it was a huge show. There weren’t a tonne of differences between me and my character, Roderick Meeks. They told me at the very beginning that they were looking for a shy, kind of chubby guy, with a very soulful voice, and that was pretty much me in a nutshell, especially in high school. I fit the role pretty well, and the writers on the show did a very good job of writing to the actors’ personalities so it was easier for me to become Roderick. I’d been doing music for a while by the time I went on America’s Got Talent, but it was still nerve-wracking. Not only are you being watched by everyone in America but you have a judges’ panel in front of you which I am not used to. But I definitely got what I wanted out of it which is a lot of great fans and people coming to my shows. I’m excited to be a part of Nashville Meets London. I heard about it when I was in Nashville one time, and I did something similar which went well. They asked me to do Nashville Meets London after that and I’m really glad they did, it’ll be great. I’m glad people in the UK enjoy Americana and Country music; it makes me really happy. It isn’t my first time in London, but I don’t think I have been to Canary Wharf before. I’m really excited to check it out. If anyone would like to check out my music before the Nashville Meets London festival, please visit my Spotify page, as well as my social media pages.”

EXHIBITIONS IT IS IS IT

Silvia Ziranek Monday 8 July – Friday 16 August Lobby, One Canada Square Free, open daily This exhibition celebrates Silvia Ziranek, the highly regarded Performance Artist who emerged on the London art scene in the late 1970s. Ziranek, who in effect is her art, is portrayed through a selection of the badges that accompany her performances and events, together with artwork for supporting materials and other items. The badges that are the main focus here – small items that carry the event title, which are variously descriptive, mysterious, wry, particular – are intended to complement, inform, intrigue. Here they are reproduced large-scale in the form of an installation, accompanied by the originals and other objects that describe and hint at her deceptively eccentric practice.

RIA BRODELL: BUTCH HEROES Until Monday 29 July Crossrail Place Roof Garden Free, open daily

Ria Brodell is a non-binary trans artist, educator and author based in Boston, USA, who since 2010 has been reclaiming lost queer history by researching and painting portraits of gender nonconforming people throughout history. From Katherina Hetzeldorfer, who lived as a man and married a woman in Germany in 1477, to more recent stories of people who had to survive by hiding their true sexuality or gender identity. As part of Canary Wharf’s activities in support of Pride in London 2019, Canary Wharf Group exhibit the fascinating stories of 10 such people from Brodell’s series Butch Heroes, published as a book in 2018.

“I have chosen the term ‘Butch’ for my title because of its dual nature: it has been slung as an insult and used as a congratulatory recognition of strength. It has a history within the LGBTQIA community and is familiar to the cisgender, heterosexual community. In addition to the term’s traditional associations of being masculine in appearance or actions, I chose ‘Butch Heroes’ to indicate people who were strong or brave in the way they lived their lives and challenged their society’s strict gender roles.” riabrodell.com

ur desire to bring the outdoors in has seen an abundance of wicker, rattan and linen find a place in our homes of late, not to mention myriad tropical prints and wildlife in abundance. But the time for BBQs, al fresco dining and garden parties will soon be upon us, so now is the time to make sure your garden is looking as decadent as your interiors this summer. It’s time to bring the indoors out. Gardens provide us with a little respite from the loud and busy world. No matter the size, they are a private haven offering seclusion and quiet (unless it’s the school holidays!). But as the days grow longer and the summer months draw near, gardens, courtyards and even decked areas provide the perfect opportunity to extend your living space without the need or expense of extending the house. The easiest approach is to treat your garden much like you would a room. Think about colour schemes, and create separated areas divided up by shrubs, tall grasses or outdoor furniture. This adds an element of surprise to your landscape, as well as introducing different zones. And for more compact spaces, garden ‘rooms’ can even help the area to appear larger. 100

A ROOM WITH A VIEW

For those wanting a dedicated work or hobby space away from the distractions of the home, a garden studio is the ideal solution. The sky is the limit, from sheds to summer houses, igloos to eco pods, the style, structure and intended use can be as creative as you like. For office space a calming environment is best. White walls and a desk set near a window to enjoy the view and cool breeze are optimum. A mix of modern furniture and traditional accessories, such as a phone and wooden filing unit, convert the space from a garden storage unit to a contemporary work area. Upcycling can also turn even the most unloved items into a fascinating feature, such as Smithers of Stamford’s luxury Vespa chair and bar stools, car sofa and Jeep office desk. Pretty bunting and folding directors’ chairs are just the ticket to dress up the typical English clubhouse look, and the added bonus of shelter makes the unpredictability

Gardens provide us with a little respite from the loud and busy world. No matter the size, they are a private haven offering seclusion and quiet of the great British weather a little more tolerable. Better yet, opt for a garden igloo. Perfect as an outside entertainment area, Cuckooland’s giant igloos are a quirky alternative to a costly conservatory. When assembled they offer a 360-degree window on the world and provide an amazing view from within. The dome gently retains heat making it the perfect retreat for both cool summer evenings, as well as snug autumn days, and as an all-weather multi-purpose portable dome, it can transform your outside area into a space more akin to a stylish conservatory, gazebo, greenhouse or play area. For something a little more permanent, Garden House Design’s stainless steel Garden Room combines stability and durability while oozing with contemporary appeal. Add a little decking to the outer area, and perhaps a nest chair or day bed, and you have the ideal setting for evening cocktails and Gatsby-style social soirées.

THE ART OF SCULPTURE

Much like indoors, one of the simplest and most satisfying ways to give your garden impact is by way of sculptural art. What once began with the humble gnome has become a global phenomenon. In June, some of the world’s biggest names in art, including Dali, Picasso, Warhol and Banksy featured in the Culloden Estate & Spa ‘Art in the Garden’ exhibition containing over 120 sculptures, some of which are valued up to £500k. Bold, eye-catching garden sculpture is the way forward this year, with large, figurative, bronze statues like Danielle Anjou’s work, and Paul Cox’s natureinspired oxidised steel sculptures leading the charge. “Having the perfect piece of sculpture in the right place can make a huge difference to any garden, courtyard or balcony,” says Cox, who has seen an increase in commissions recently for smallscale work for balconies. “We decorate our gardens in the same way as we do our homes now, by using art to adorn and show our personalities. Outside space has become a luxury, especially if you live in the inner cities, so making the most out of your space is important.” A bold statement piece at the end of a larger garden or pathway can help to draw the eye, but for smaller cottage gardens, use intimate spaces and sculptures to create areas of discovery and transform the area. Cox also advises to think about how the garden will alter throughout the seasons, and suggests moving smaller sculptures to different locations as the flowers and foliage change and dormant climbers spring back into life looking for somewhere to cling onto. “My pieces are designed to work all year round, and can even look their best on a cold and frosty morning,” he says. “They give structural interest and create focal points. I love the subtle seed pod designs with soft muted tones of oxidised metal and Verdigris green.” The natural warm colour of oxidised steel has always been a popular material in the garden, says Cox, because it works so well against green plant foliage in the orange evening sun. Water features can also help to create a tranquil haven, adding depth and interest to a garden design, while striking fire pits allow for outdoor areas to be enjoyed long after the sun has gone down. But, colour is also becoming more accepted in garden adornments these days. Decorative glass designer Emma Britton’s Rain Garden for this year’s RHS Chelsea Flower Show in May featured a glass shower panel with a hand-painted splashback design of striking Foxtail Lilies in on-trend Pantone shades of coral, salmon and orange. Focussing on plants that are able to thrive and survive climate change, warmer temperatures and potentially less water in the UK in the future, her bathroom-inspired design, which included a copper bathtub, aimed to illustrate how garden design and interior styling feed into one another. “Relaxing in a bath in a beautiful bathroom is really the perfect way to unwind,” she says, “and I wanted to bring all those elements together with my new splashback to create calmness with colour and fabulous florals.”

Outside space has become a luxury, especially if you live in the inner cities, so making the most out of your space is important
