EDITOR’S LETTER If there was an award for the past decade’s most fascinating personality, Lady Gaga would certainly be in the running for the top spot. But what is it about her that keeps us so intrigued? Her everevolving persona or the blatantly provocative and outrageous costumes – made from either very little material or raw meat – certainly keep her in the headlines. Now she has made her feature film debut in a remake of A Star is Born alongside Bradley Cooper, and she is tipped to be nominated for an Oscar. Watching her rousing performance at a preview screening this week, it struck me that her success is no fluke. Gaga has worked hard for every inch of her success. A documentary film on Netflix last year, Gaga: Five Foot Two, highlighted her fight with fibromyalgia – a disease that gives her chronic and considerable pain – and which needs constant treatment. It showed that she has real grit. She works hard, continually pushes herself and has never given up - or given into what others expect of her. On page 16 she tells writer Jake Taylor how she has refused to bow to pressure to behave or look a certain way – and has fought to continue to evolve professionally. I suggest you snuggle up in bed one weekend morning to read this packed issue of Canary Wharf Magazine. As the clocks go back later this month and the nights draw in, there’s nothing quite like a fluffy blanket, bed socks and a hot drink to bring comfort. If your sleep room is more boring than boudoir, I hope you’ll be inspired by our bedroom ideas and sleep feature beginning on page 24. Our fashion shoot on page 36 showcases this season’s most stunning coats and cashmere set in a striking Game of Thrones-style setting. It’s high fashion at its best - although not perhaps your everyday work-wear. But maybe we should be braver and bolder with our winter fashion. Perhaps we should all be a bit more Gaga. Enjoy the issue.

For the first time in five years, Canary Wharf’s rink will be an open-air venue for skating under the glistening skyline. When the skates are off, warm up and stay close to the action with an array of restaurants, bars and shops that surround the ice. This year, Canary Wharf’s skating location is joined by a new addition: The Ivy in the Park. Open seven days a week, it’s the perfect place to enjoy one of the most loved winter traditions. RADIO GAGA THE GLOVES – AND LOBSTER HATS – ARE OFF: LADY GAGA, A.K.A STEFANI GERMANOTTA, PRESENTS A PARED BACK PERSONA IN ‘A STAR IS BORN’ WORDS JAKE TAYLOR
T
he path from popstar to Hollywood mogul is a road well travelled. Some – the Justin Timberlakes and Jennifer Lopezes of the world – have made the trajectory look effortless. Others, less so. Musical triumphs aside, the likes of Rihanna, Mariah Carey and Madonna have found the silver screen to be a harder nut to crack. The latter even tried – unsuccessfully – to get her 1979 indie flick A Certain Sacrifice banned from release. Stefani Germanotta, a.k.a Lady Gaga, is perhaps better placed to carve a career in the acting world. Thanks to her 10-year tenure as her dramatic alter ego, Gaga is as much a performer as she is a musician. Her dominance on the stage has seen her compared to the likes of Madonna and David Bowie, with each performance a new iteration of her multi-layered character. Indeed, despite early indications that she was destined for musical stardom (she started playing the piano aged four and
writing songs aged 11), the young Gaga sought a career on the silver screen. It was acting that led her to a life on stage, and is perhaps what has most informed her flamboyant on-stage persona. “When I was 19 years old, I told my parents I was dropping out of school and I was dragging my piano around New York City banging on doors so that I could perform,” she recalls. “I already knew then that I would be Lady Gaga. I was even lying, pretending to be my own manager so I could get the 10pm slot.” This April, Gaga’s debut single Just Dance, which shot her to stardom in mid-2008 at the peak of the financial crash, marked its 10th anniversary. With six Grammy Awards, three Brit Awards, and multiple best-selling singles behind her, Gaga can be characterised as nothing less than an astonishing success. With her on-stage theatrics, wild costumes and exuberant persona, the pop phenomenon has developed a legion of quasi-fanatical fans and a penchant for staging outlandish red-carpet moments.

“Once I had a record executive suggest that I get a nose job before my first single came out”
Meat dresses, madcap millinery and a loyal legion of Little Monsters (her fans) have gone on to define the singer we know today. In many ways, she has been the archetypal pop star of her era – a talented singer-songwriter who seemed to revel in the performative nature of the world of show-business. But as recently as 2014, a noticeable change overcame Gaga – the public began, bit by bit, to see the real Germanotta come to the fore. That year saw the release of her album Artpop, which was perhaps the least well received of her recordings. The subsequent album, Joanne, released in 2016 and named after a maternal aunt, encapsulated the modern era of Gaga; it stripped back the oversized hair-dos and outrageous outfits to give fans a glimpse of the woman behind the star. It is arguably this contemporary, soul-baring example of the once alien pop superstar that formed the basis for her character, Ally, in Bradley Cooper’s directorial debut A Star Is Born. The fourth version of the film – which debuted in 1937 and was perhaps most famously made into a rock musical in 1976, starring Kris Kristofferson and Barbra Streisand – follows the love story of country musician Jackson Maine (Cooper) and struggling singer Ally (Gaga), who has all but given up on her dreams. It’s not a feeling that the singer is familiar with. “I heard the word ‘No’ a lot earlier in my career, but I never gave up,” she says. “That’s the biggest difference between me and Ally. Ally has completely given up and she does not believe in herself. She does not believe she’s beautiful and she does not believe she has what it takes. “Once I had a record executive suggest that I get a nose job before my first single came out and before we shot the video. But I said no. They also wanted to give my songs to other girls or girl groups. They didn’t want it to be me; I just had to hold onto my music for dear life.” Her latest project, however, has seen her pass the mantel – or microphone, as it were – to her co-star and director, Cooper. A man more famed for comedy portrayals (The Hangover), black comedies (American Hustle, Silver Linings Playbook) and war biopics (American Sniper), Cooper seemed the more incongruous of the pair when it came to filling the dual musical shoes of Kristofferson and Streisand. Not that that stopped him; the actor learned to play the guitar, worked with a vocal coach for a year and a half and ended up writing three of the songs featured in the film. “All because of Gaga,” he said in an interview with Vogue. “She really gave me the confidence.” Indeed, at Gaga’s insistence, every performance featured in the film was recorded live. With the cameras rolling, Cooper took to the stage ahead of Willy Nelson at California’s country music festival Stagecoach, and even performed in front of 80,000 people at England’s own Glastonbury. “I couldn’t believe how good he was,” Gaga admits. “I never ever knew that

he could sing. We did a lot of harmonising, and there was something that just clicked when we were singing together.” Following a successful premiere at the Venice Film Festival in August, A Star Is Born is already causing an Academy Award buzz – but there will inevitably be critics expecting to label Gaga’s move from pop icon to movie star an inevitable misstep. Success or not, for the star herself this recent project will remain “one of the most fulfilling artistic experiences of my life, if not the most” – no small praise coming from such a chameleonic performer. There were times, however, when it seemed Gaga was shouldering the same burden of self-doubt as her character Ally. “I was nervous, especially at the beginning, and of course you feel the pressure of living up to expectations when the stakes are pretty high, not just for yourself but for everyone involved,” she nods. “This was the first time I had to play in a film from beginning to end and I was scared. When an artist is moving into a new medium, if they have been studying and gestating like a petri dish for so long, it’s like an explosion when they finally come out. “At one point, Bradley said something off-script to me, and I kept repeating that same line over and over again because I didn’t know what to do. And he said, ‘Are you okay? Do you feel like you need to cry?’ I cried for a second, and then I just threw the lines out the window. I still had them with me, but I was able to be in a more present conversation with him. It really taught me something about being an actor: you have to know the story that you’re going to tell, and you have to know the lines. But at the end of the day, you have to be as honest as possible in the moment.”
LU X U R Y L ON D ON .C O.U K
For all her misgivings, there’s always been an honest streak running through Gaga, however extroverted on the surface. Her philanthropic ventures and social activism have pointed to a person not wholly comfortable with her status as a music icon – and there’s an irony to her successes coming from a debut album entitled The Fame. “Fame is a very unnatural thing,” she muses. “If you’re an artist, you have this intense relationship with your work and that’s what underlies everything. Then if you reach a certain point, everything changes around you and it’s not you who is changing but the people around you. I think artists need help adjusting to that because that’s often the biggest struggle you face, especially when you’re trying to keep evolving, not just in terms of your work but as an individual.” An evolving persona has come to define Gaga – from budding singer-songwriter to pop superstar, fashion icon and now Hollywood actress – but for all her quirks, she’s only ever had one goal: “I just knew I wanted to be like myself, and no one else.” Mission accomplished. A Star is Born is out 5 October

MAKE YOUR BED AND LIE IN IT Almost without fail, the bed will always be the central design focus in a bedroom, but the type of bed frame that you select is crucial to the colour scheme of the room. Timber is as timeless and natural as it comes, but rather than a standard pine frame, opt for something more striking to truly set the room apart. Natural textures are playing a key role in interior decorating for 2018/19, and the room where rattan pieces are making new waves is the bedroom. Anthropologie’s timber bed frames nod to the traditional flora found in Myanmar, and provide a piece of stunning design to build a room around. The Kinsella Rattan Bed lends a pleasantly vintage, decorative ease to the bedroom via its feminine filigree and expansively fanned headboard, while the expertly handcarved, solid mango wood Lotus bed is one-of-a-kind. Habitat’s new Sabine bedroom range designed by Matthew Long is a modern take on a look inspired by the Ibizan countryside, while its handwoven Nadia bed combines rattan stems in different thicknesses for a light design with a distinctive shape. “There’s a continuing narrative surrounding artisanal craft and handmade products and their provenance,” says a spokesperson for Savoir Beds. “They are seen as ‘honest’ and valued and so soft woods, rattan and terracotta are seeing a resurgence. These materials aren’t luxury per se, but the sourcing and production processes are elevating their status and we’re seeing them used in increasingly sculptural ways.”
There’s a continuing narrative surrounding artisanal craft and handmade products Upholstered beds, on the other hand, are about colour and texture. “Simple, timeless headboards in a neutral colour such as grey remain ever popular, as they act as an extremely versatile backdrop,” says Hannah Young of luxury bed manufacturer Button & Sprung. “An upholstered bed in a smoky grey shade will allow you to introduce bolder tones and patterns in your accessories, but will also allow you to update your bedroom with ease to reflect seasonal trends. In contrast, oversized buttoned or curved headboards with wings help create a real focal point in a bedroom. “Velvet fabrics for upholstery have also been trending for a while now, and they don’t seem to be going anywhere anytime soon,” she adds. “Sumptuous and durable, this on-trend texture brings instant luxury into the bedroom, and it has had a major style reboot in terms of both colour and composition.” For those preferring a more cool and contemporary look, metal bed frames lend themselves to the current monochrome trend, while the contemporary four-poster is clean, simple, and often without a canopy, such as the Sassy Boo Majestic Luxury Four Poster by The French Bedroom Co. Framed with four stunning twist pillars topped with ornate acorns, it features a scroll-style headboard and multiple-arched footboard to finish the bed perfectly. SUPPORT IS KEY Choosing the right mattress is something that deserves plenty of time and attention. We spend approximately a third of our life asleep, and a good night’s kip is what gives us the energy to face the world with a spring in our step. The only way to truly know whether the support and breathability of a mattress is right for you, however, is to lie down and have a wriggle about. Swedish bed specialist Hästens uses horsetail hair to craft its range of beds, which is naturally hypoallergenic. The brand has recently gone one step further in a bid for ideal bed shopping, however, and has launched a new concept ‘sleep spa’ store in its hometown of Köping (soon to also be implemented in the upcoming Notting Hill store). Under the guidance of the brand’s professional staff, you can learn more about a perfect sleeping position, natural materials in the beds and how to be more awake after a perfect night’s sleep. “We have replaced the old lighting with modern LED technology, and thanks to dim lighting and calm music, visitors can truly relax,” says Linnea Blank, retail concept designer at Hästens. “Lay down for a while, you can even take a nap if you want to.” As mattresses increase in price, they tend to have a higher spring count and better quality fillings. The higher the number of springs and the more luxurious the fillings, the more the mattress will contour to your body shape. Choosing a mattress with natural fillings rather than synthetic materials such as foam can also help to regulate your body temperature at night, as well as help the environment in the long-term. As an alternative to memory foam, pocket sprung mattresses are a good choice for people with back pain as the amount and arrangement of the coils provides the right degree of support to distribute the body’s weight evenly. Button & Sprung has recently launched a natural mattress range with an inherently fire retardant ticking, meaning its mattresses now contain no chemicals, as well as no foam, responding to consumer demand for an all-natural mattress option. 28
DESIGN BY LINEN Strong, dark colours have long been a hot design trend, and will remain for quite a while longer. Brooding violet, night-sky navy and striking emerald green are all key colours, and these braver choices feature on both walls and bedding. Deep soothing, subdued hues create a peaceful, relaxing vibe that's so important in the bedroom, but if you don’t want to go all out and paint the walls, use touches of a dark colour as accents throughout your bedroom. Even draping a romantically dark velvet throw over the top of lighter sheets will have the same effect. “There’s an overall feel of warmth and earthiness this season in our colour palette, which layers on top of some of our soft, dustier colours,” says Kate Butler, head of design for Habitat. “Elsewhere combinations of spicy, bold, bright colours – notably with the introduction of violet, turmeric and magenta – provide an opportunity for unexpected colour combinations.” Dunelm is going all out with tropical prints set on a dark background for its AW18 linen ranges. Shades of lush green are accentuated beautifully when teamed with dark greys, blues and even black, and the trend for tropical bedding pairs perfectly with natural woven furniture. Across homes and fashion, sustainable fabrics is another key trend, “with the inclusion of raw, organic materials like untreated wool and jute with inherent texture,” says Butler. Experts predict that by 2019 it will have hit mainstream, so expect to see a steep increase in products made from sustainable alternatives such as animal-free leather and worm-free silk. Bed linen in organic cotton has already made its mark, and Toast’s organic woven ticking stripe cotton and supple, washed linen/cotton is a perfect example.
PILLOW MENU Choosing the right pillow will ensure the best neck support and let your body settle into its most comfortable and optimum sleeping position. For some people searching for anti-snoring pillows or relief from sleep apnoea, finding the right support pillow is like a dream come true. Whether you are better suited to a cooling pillow, a microfibre, goose down, silk-filled, wool-filled or even a buckwheat pillow, the choice is wholly individual. The TEMPUR Ergonomic Pillow Collection is conceived to suit those that require the best support possible to relieve discomfort for head, neck and shoulders. The TEMPUR Original Pillow Queen is a contoured pillow made from visco elastic, which moulds perfectly to your neck and head, giving excellent support to the neck and shoulder muscles. Sink your head onto a luxury goose feather and down pillow by The English Feather Company, and drift off to dreamland. Combining the lightweight quality of down with the natural warmth of goose feathers to ensure the perfect night's sleep, this pillow is filled with 85 per cent luxury goose feather and 15 per cent down. For those who struggle to breathe easy, or relax in order to nod off, Slumberdown’s brand new scented pillow enhancers are the ideal solution. The first of its kind, the new range exclusive to Matalan as part of its Sleep Solutions collection includes two unique scents: Eucalyptus & Menthol (to help clear sinuses), and Lavender & Vanilla (for calming and soothing properties).
Designed to give new mothers more support when sitting up in bed or on the sofa, V-shaped pillows offer support for the neck, head and shoulders. The Penelope Hope Pina Colada Red Mix will make a bold statement in your bedroom as well as giving practical support, but it’s not only useful for those with a young baby, it is also great for snuggling up in bed reading a book.
PERFECT YOUR SLEEP ROUTINE “A good night’s sleep starts the moment you wake up,” says Risa Gabrielle, a London-based yoga teacher and sleep therapist. “It’s not just about what we do before bed, such as cutting down on caffeine and alcohol, and minimising exercise, but the habits that we put into place all day. Here, she shares her five top tips for achieving the perfect night’s sleep. 1. Take your phone out of your room. If you only do one thing, make it this. Don’t use it as your alarm, and stop looking at your phone at least 30 minutes before bed. You might think that you are able to look at your phone right before bed and still fall asleep fine, but the blue light from your phone has a long halflife, and it disrupts the production of melatonin, the hormone that is released by the body to help bring on sleep. 2. Cut off screen time. Disconnect from all screens including the television and computers, for at least 30 minutes before bed. This allows you to create the time for a bedtime ritual, and wind down before sleep. It might be a skincare routine, gentle stretches to get the tension out of your body or preparing for the next day. LU X U R Y L ON D ON .C O.U K
If you like to read in bed, ensure it’s an actual book with a dim bedside or book light rather than a kindle. 3. Super sleep yoga. Yoga nidra is yogic sleep – a guided meditation that is ideal to do before bed, but can also serve as layered rest throughout the day. Thirty minutes of yoga nidra is the equivalent of one to two hours of sleep. All you have to do is listen, and if you drift off that's ok. Most yoga nidra shouldn't be used directly before bed as it's super restorative and can inhibit your sleep, but there are some yoga nidras that are specifically designed to wind you down for sleep. Just be careful not to get dependent on them. 4. Aromatherapy and breathing. Lavender is a great aromatherapy scent to use before bed. Diffusers in the bedroom can create a mood and ambience that calms the mind, while deep breathing exercises will relax you and help you achieve those forty winks. 5. Honour the bedroom. Make sure the bedroom is your haven. Comfortable, cool enough, and dimly lit – and most importantly, only use the bed for sleep and sex. 29
KIDS’ CLUB SUPER SPOOKY HALLOWEEN FUN AND COSY KIT WORDS MORAG TURNER
HAPPY HALLOWEEN After their birthday and Christmas, Halloween is probably the biggest highlight in most kids’ years. Dressing up, trick or treating and consuming their own body weight in Haribos – what’s not to love? But if you want to prize them away from the fake blood and E numbers for a while there are tons of great spooky activities going on all over London. First up, whisper it: Lord Voldemort has returned. Fortunately, this year, his arrival at Warner Bros. Studio is a welcome treat for Harry Potter fans. The studios are home to the amazing Harry Potter Tours where you can see everything from behind the scenes and in the run up to Halloween they celebrate the ‘Dark Arts’. The Great Hall's banquet tables are decorated with pumpkins and cauldrons laid out for a Halloween feast and Death Eaters are to be found on Diagon Alley. It runs until Saturday 10 November and tickets must be pre-booked (wbstudiotour.co.uk). For a great range of hands-on Halloween activities head to ‘Boo at the Zoo’ at London Zoo. From meeting creepy crawlies to pumpkin carving, there is something for kids of all ages (zsl.org). Or for older children who are feeling brave visit the London Tombs. It’s billed as a super scary attraction but there’s a child-friendly tour available that features all the scares without the actual horror (thelondonbridgeexperience.com).
HALF TERM ESCAPE If you are looking for a wonderful family break this half term then venture north of the border to the amazing Gleneagles hotel. It calls itself ‘the glorious playground’ and that really does sum up what this five star resort is all about. Little ones can try out a mini Landrover driving course, feed the birds of prey at the world famous falconry centre or even a spot ferret racing. Inside there is the newly revamped kids club The Den. For parents there’s the spa, a host of classic outdoor pursuits and of course the legendary golf course. It really doesn’t get better than a stay at Gleneagles. gleneagles.com

CHANGE REISS, JUBILEE PLACE, OFFERS A BRAND NEW SCULPTURAL DESIGN AND CONTEMPORARY DIGITAL SERVICE

ust as the trees shed their leaves for autumn, Canary Wharf’s Reiss store has shed its former look in favour of a brand new, modern style. The Jubilee Place store has received a full refurbishment to coincide with the arrival of its AW18 collection. Referencing the efficient elegance of modernist buildings by pioneering architects such as Ludwig Mies van der Rohe and Le Corbusier, the layout is defined by a gallerystyle monochrome aesthetic of sweeping lines, asymmetrical angles and myriad textures, including glass, concrete and white-washed timber. Mixing contemporary and traditional design, the store has been updated with a floor-toceiling glass front, which opens onto a spacious open-plan interior. Contemporary sterling silver and black metal fixtures contrast with 1970s-style furniture, including sumptuous chairs upholstered in decadent bronze velvet. The most exciting feature is the new digital mirror concept. The first Reiss boutique to test out the new tech, the store’s savvy mirrors allow shoppers to delve deeper into the journey of the brand’s key collections, giving them the opportunity to follow each product from the initial design inspiration through to production. New for AW18 is a women’s collection of sumptuous silk and soft cashmere pieces in autumnal tones of luscious berry and powder blue, while men are treated to suave printed shirts and slick tailoring in a deep colour palette with accents of light grey. The new range is displayed on shelving and tables that draw inspiration from interlocking planes of pavilion architecture. Look out for a rail of specially curated pieces – an edit that is specific to the Jubilee Place store.

SKIN DEEP LONDON IS NOW HOME TO A WEALTH OF BRANDS THAT MAKE THE MOST OF NATURE’S BOUNTY WITHOUT COSTING THE EARTH – HELPING YOU TO BE AS GOOD TO THE ENVIRONMENT AS YOU ARE TO YOURSELF WORDS ANNABEL HARRISON
A
decade ago, I didn’t know what a microbead was. I never read the ingredients lists on the lotions and potions lining my shelves, I had a stash of hotel miniatures – just because – and I didn’t question the quantity of packaging apparently needed for each and every one of them. Now, I can’t believe it took me, and the wider world, so long to wake up to the stark reality of the pernicious effect caused by billions of these little plastic beads, used in everything from exfoliators to make-up remover, flooding into the sea. So long to wake up to the fact that there are chemicals in our bathrooms that we can’t even pronounce, let alone identify, which we mindlessly smear on to our skin every day. And so long to wake up to the fact that our beauty habits amount to 120 billion units of packaging a year – that’s 16 for every person on earth. So, what woke us up? Although the wheels of change were already in (slow) motion, this global issue was notably
LU X U R Y L ON D ON .C O.U K
highlighted by the wildlife documentary programme Blue Planet II, the most watched programme in the UK last year. Its final episode took an unflinching look at the damage caused to marine life by plastic waste and had an impact that even Sir David Attenborough, dubbed the godfather of the natural world, couldn’t have predicted. “We hoped that it would open people’s eyes to the damage that we are doing to our oceans and the creatures that live in them,” he said. “I’ve been absolutely astonished. I never imagined there would be quite so many of you who would be inspired to want change.” And it’s change we want. In January this year, microbeads were outlawed. In February, we pledged to #passonplastic and that movement has gathered momentum ever since, with the British government now considering a ban on single-use plastics. Beauty is by no means the only industry with a lot of work to do, both in terms of what goes into products as well as their packaging, but it does have a lot to answer for. Brands that provide answers to the problem are winning
accolades and audiences, and, to the most established environmental labels, it must seem as though this sea change (excuse the pun) has been a long time in the making. Take The Body Shop. The ‘original beauty brand with a conscience’ was set up by Dame Anita Roddick, arguably the pioneer of ethical beauty in the UK, in 1976 and, according to The Sunday Times Style, it’s had a suitably 21st-century upgrade, wooing generation Z with shimmering dry oils and body yogurts. Another cult favourite, Neal’s Yard Remedies, was founded in Covent Garden in 1981. The brand describes its ethos as “pushing against the synthetic chemical approach to skin and healthcare that had been adopted by much of the industry,” and it has paved the way for the likes of Liz Earle and Green People. For these companies, putting down their roots in the 1990s, it was cool to care. Responsible sourcing and natural remedies were the norm, not the exception, and made smart business sense. The ranks of this small band swelled and Neom Organics, a pioneer of London’s 53
natural skincare scene, created a mantra that could just as easily define the 2018 mindset: ‘Wellbeing. Small Steps. Big Difference’. “Consumers are savvier than ever,” affirms founder Nicola Elliott. “They want to know exactly what they’re putting on their skin and they want products that work really hard. It’s getting much easier to choose beauty brands that offer natural, green alternatives without compromising on efficacy or paying through the nose.” Even with 13 years to its (organic) name, Neom Organic isn’t resting on its laurels. When asked if its products are certified organic, the brand gives a detailed, in-depth and considered answer, rather than a simple yes – responsible on Neom Organic’s part and helpful for us. Because of the relative infancy of the booming market, the parameters, when it comes to labelling, are confusingly grey. Do we want our skincare to be natural, organic, clean, vegan, fair trade, or all of the above? This is how we see it: if a company means – green – business, it will shout its credentials from the rooftops, making it easy for us to make an educated purchase. And more and more brands are doing just this. The natural, organic cosmetics and personal care market is estimated to be growing at a huge rate of 10 per cent each year. At Luxury London, we’ve narrowed down our focus this month to local skincare that makes taking eco-conscious steps in a sustainable direction that bit easier. Floral Street is a contemporary Brit brand, named after a street in Covent Garden, that ticks all the boxes for vegan ingredients and gold-star packaging. Each body formula comes in a colour-popping tube made from 75 per cent sustainable sugarcane bioplastic. With a product that smells gorgeous and comes in durable and recyclable packaging that looks great in a #shelfie, everyone wins. BYBI Beauty’s Babe Balm moisturiser and Prime Time facial scrub, also presented in candy-coloured sugarcane bioplastic, are just as covetable – 100 per cent natural and recyclable. BYBI Beauty’s Elsie Rutterford and Dominika Minarovic were fed up with “blanket formulations and synthetic fillers padding out our products”. They advise us to think about the reasons behind changes to our routine: “Is it about reducing your plastic consumption? Transitioning to products that are organic? Once you’ve defined what you’re trying to achieve, it’s much easier to research the certifications available.” Another great tip is to search through social media hashtags to discover lesser-known labels. We found Skin & Tonic through #organicbeauty and the brand is squarely aimed at sociable, hipster millennials, boasting Beard & Shave Oil and a Festival Survival Kit in its slimline product edit. And, of course, it’s made in Hackney. Its USP is that it uses seven (or fewer) pronounceable natural, edible, therapeutic ingredients, with the ethos that ‘if you wouldn’t put it in your body, it shouldn’t go on your body’. Suffering from endometriosis and dermatitis, Skin & Tonic founder Sarah Hancock developed the range to treat her own skin. By Sarah London’s products were created for a similar reason. This brand is a poster child for transparency; full ingredients lists appear on the front of each product, with scientific names relegated to the back. It really is ‘skincare to feed your skin’.
And the words matter. Skincare vocabulary is changing, in keeping with a move back to plant-based ingredients – wholesome imperatives such as ‘nourish’, ‘feed’ and ‘drink’ pepper labels and even brand names. Sister & Co Skin Food launched in 2015, with coconut oil at its heart, and its products smell like beach bar mocktails – Lemon Myrtle & Mint Raw Coconut Lip Tonic, anyone? Even the idea of anti-ageing, a term once emblazoned across every skincare ad from here to New Zealand, has lost its appeal. “It’s all about looking rested and refreshed,” says Orveda founder Sue Y. Nabi, who lives in London. “Customers are seeking healthier alternatives, generally, and skincare is no exception. Everyone is looking for greener, cleaner, sustainable formulations.” Orveda’s concepts are ‘Green, Clean, Vegan’ and ‘Healthy Is The New Sexy’. Its devotees can’t get enough of its gender-neutral Healing Sap and Ironing Effect Masque, presented in slick ombré-green glass jars – and the cellophane wrap is recyclable too. Unisex skincare is appearing across the board, tracking the trend for unisex clothing lines. The monochrome palette of the newest kid on the British beauty block, Wildsmith Skin – launched in July and which, poetically, ‘started with a walk in the woods’ – suggests a desire to appeal to a type of customer, not a gender. It’s “modern, natural, eco-friendly skincare,” says MD Maria Lam. “It is relevant to concerns today, like pollution, environmental aggressors and ageing issues, such as inflammation. All delivered in a format which forms part of an easy daily ritual for a mobile world.” Gone are the lazy days of the ‘shrink it, pink it’ approach to appealing to women, and (wrongly) assuming men don’t care about much more than a razor and bar of soap. Although if it is soap you’re after, then you could do a lot worse than exploring the offerings from The Soap Co, which has bagged a shelf-load of accolades over the past three years. Based in East London, with a workshop in the Lake District, its products are all handcrafted by people who are blind, disabled or otherwise disadvantaged. Locally sourced bottles? Check. Compostable soap wrappers, no parabens, no animal testing? Check, check, check. If doing the research yourself is overwhelming, turn to someone who’s done it for you – namely Imelda Burke at Content Beauty & Wellbeing. Founded 10 years ago, this skincare store in Marylebone and its website stock a treasure trove of natural beauty brands, from American brand Mother Dirt and French label Absolution to Nourish London and Pai Skincare, manufactured in Chiswick. Content Beauty & Wellbeing’s selection premise is simple: “We don’t think your skin needs unnecessary synthetic chemicals, so we don’t sell them.” Filter products by ethos, whether you want natural, organic, raw, silicone-free or Great British beauty. If the choices feel endless, start with one small step. Maybe you’ll leave those tempting miniatures in the hotel on your next minibreak. Maybe you’ll spend five minutes researching the moisturiser you’ve had for years. If its credentials don’t impress you, don’t let it get under your skin – just change your allegiance to the natural beauty crusaders that are changing the world one bottle, balm, tub and tube at a time.

t’s the season for making a statement. Subtlety is out the window and bolder looks are taking centre stage. Just as fashion is embracing brash logos and interiors the return of maximalism, the jewellery world is championing a bolder style of regalia. Chunky necklaces, decadent brooches and earrings heavy with embellishment graced the AW18 catwalks, and the message was clear: jewellery is back and bolder than ever. So to David M Robinson (DMR), which has launched a collection of statement earrings to tap into this flashier state of mind. Five new shoulder-skimming styles have been produced, ranging from bedazzling Art Deco sets to more understated, gold drop creations. “This new collection of statement earrings is inspired by an emerging trend that we have seen on catwalks around the world,” says Carleeann Taylor, DMR’s jewellery buying manager. “As well as being an exciting new direction for DMR, it provides our clients with a contemporary collection of pieces, in various metals, that are perfect for the coming season.” An 18ct Rose Gold Triangle Diamond pair (£3,950, pictured bottom left) gets straight to the point; round, brilliant cut diamonds are pavé set and dazzle when the light hits them. Subtler but no less striking are the 18ct Yellow Gold Linear Diamond Drop earrings (£5,700, pictured top left), featuring both round brilliant cut and baguette cut diamonds that skim the shoulder. For a retro look, the 18ct White Gold Art Deco Style Diamond earrings (£6,400, pictured right) are finished with polished black rhodium and hark back to the Great Gatsby era – it’s a look Daisy Buchanan would be proud of. Finally, two 18ct Yellow Gold drop earrings nail the coveted day-to-night look; inspired, and named after, the brand’s most recent Giallo collection, the Oval and Tribal drop earrings (both £350) fuse casual and smart dress codes, and would look just as good paired with a T-shirt as they would an evening gown. Go forth and be bold. David M Robinson, Jubilee Place, davidmrobinson.co.uk

How I Did It EX-MILITARY MAJOR, DRONE EXPERT AND CURRENT CHIEF EXECUTIVE OF CANARY WHARF-BASED COMPANY DRONE MAJOR GROUP, ROBERT GARBETT, TALKS CONTROVERSY, CONNECTIONS, AND NOT CALLING YOURSELF A CEO AS TOLD TO ABISHA SRITHARAN
I would describe myself as passionate about what I do. That pretty much hits the nail on the head really. You have to be passionate; if you are not passionate about what you do, then there is no point. I have always had a love for the drone industry. Something everyone needs to understand is that drones are not just those flying things, as most people think. It is actually anything unmanned. I worked on drone policy during my time in the military, and it is something I really enjoyed. Going on the journey of discovery, seeing where the industry is going and realising you know more than most people about it all is what really conjured my love for the drone industry as a whole. I joined the army when I was 16, until I wheeled myself out years later following an injury. While I was there, I achieved a HNC in Electronic Engineering and went to university where I left with a degree in Electronic Systems Engineering, before completing an alignment degree in Aeronautical Engineering. It was nice being a captain in university. If I hadn’t had to leave the military then I would probably still be there now. I was on an accelerated career path, and I enjoyed it. My whole career was mapped out. I reached major very early, so it was a bit disappointing having to leave – but I don’t regret it. 68
“If you want to succeed, you need to get involved at every level” I absolutely love my job. The Drone Major Group was set up when it was discovered how fragmented and disconnected the drone industry was globally. The company covers the entire industry and supports its growth. It is really about connecting all the names and people in the industry. Not just big-names but also start-ups and even just people who have an interest in the drone industry. I know that there is a lot of controversy regarding safety and security in the world of drones. It is a multi-layered issue. A lot of these issues come from the media, and our job is to advise, guide and educate people on these issues and about what a drone actually is, as well as their benefits. SUAS Global is about the hybridisation of drones, and is part of the Drone Major Group. It stands for Surface Underwater Air and Space. My favourite of these is the development in the space industry – it is really starting to wake up.
There are some really cool projects. But the hybridisation of drones is the thing that is most exciting. It is the rise of the hybrids that is my favourite part. I do get a buzz out of it. What advice would I give to a fellow CEO? Don’t call yourselves a CEO! But being a chief executive – not a CEO – is very hard. You need to take breaks, have the right team and never do things simply for the money, but do it because it is the right thing to do. Money will follow. If you want to succeed, you need to get involved at every level, whatever industry you are in. If you engage, you can drive change. Nobody does it alone. Drone Major Group is the world’s first global commercial organisation dedicated to connecting, supporting and trading with all stakeholders in the drone industry at every level and across every environment (surface, underwater, air & space), dronemajorgroup.com LU X U R Y L ON D ON .C O.U K

t’s early summer, mid-afternoon, and Campo Santi Giovanni e Paolo bursts into life. School’s out and so are the kids. Fast feet slap cool, hard stone. Children chase pigeons, mothers chase children, boys chase girls who chase boys who chase footballs in the hope of slotting it home between two white marble tombs on the red-brick façade of the Basilica di Santi Giovanni e Paolo. A light breeze breathes life into a red and yellow flag bearing the winged lion of St Mark. Beneath a bronze Bartolomeo Colleoni, gondolas float to and fro. An accordionist with a handle-bar moustach pulls and puffs his mellifluous music into the air. Pigeons strut, coffee wafts, church bells toll. Tumultuous tranquillity. We’re watching the cut and thrust of Venetian life from the first-floor window of our invisible three-bedroom suite midway along the southern side of this ancient ‘campo’ – Venetian for square. On this spot in 1782, Pope Pius VI commemorated the day of Pentecost. The basilica opposite houses the tombs of 25 Venetian doges, rulers of the republic from 697–1797. Venice’s history bewitches. Suitably, our hideaway for the weekend is a converted 16th-century palace. As boltholes go, it’s really rather special. A passion project of husband-and-wife team Anna Covre and Frederic Tubau, founders of award-winning Parisian-based design studio ANNA&FRED, Palazzo Volpi was designed to fill a gap in the market. “Our aim was to create an accommodation offering that was luxurious and private,” says Covre. “Something contemporary in style, 78
designed using the highest quality materials, which would provide a secluded stay alongside locals in one of the city’s hotspots.” After a half-hour water taxi from Marco Polo airport, Palazzo Volpi is less than a five-minute walk from the Ospedale ferry terminal. It sits pretty in one of Venice’s most attractive squares, close to Piazza San Marco and the Rialto Bridge, yet far enough away from other tourist attractions to draw only the most explorative of visitors. Down in the square, you’re more likely to lunch with locals than cruise-ship day trippers. The façade of Palazzo Volpi was immortalised in 18th-century oil paintings by Canaletto and Francesco Guardi. In the previous century, the property housed the embassy of the Brescia republic; in the century after, the consulate of Argentina. Anna and Fred inherited a building that had remained untouched for 70 years, it’s sole occupant a lonely priest. The pair reopened the premises as a swanky three-suite hotel in January 2018. You’ll find it through an unassuming opening

Be warned, however, order a latte and you’ll get a glass of milk. Behind a hefty, high-tech security door, a serene, scented vault of soothing creams and tasteful furnishings awaits. Brands including Armani, Yves Saint Laurent, Viktor&Rolf and Bottega Veneta have all employed Anna and Fred’s services. It is easy to see why. A curving staircase leads up to the three expansive apartments. The largest is a threebedroom duplex for up to five guests. A lowerground-floor, super-spec kitchen – complete with sparkling water on tap – leads out to a beautiful, tree-lined, terracotta and red-brick courtyard. The two other suites are sprawling one-bedroom apartments with living rooms and kitchens. All come with daily maid service. A private chef can also be arranged. Mirrors, lots of them, some disguising TVs, reflect a colour palette of salmon, pink and taupe. Living rooms feature custom-made cotton-linen sofas and silk-velvet chairs. Rugs are from India; glass from France. Bedrooms sport four-poster beds. Light-washed wooden beams are a running theme, as is white marble flooring. All furniture and table-top lights were designed by ANNA&FRED. Everything is available to order. Chic, chic, chic. THE GARDEN OF ENGLAND
With its rolling hills, fertile farmland and abundant orchards, Kent certainly deserves its moniker of the ‘Garden of England’. Filled with beauty spots – from idyllic rural vistas to glittering coastlines – you’ll be spoilt for choice. One of the best places to enjoy the golden glory of the season is at Bedgebury Pinetum and Forest. There are 1,800 different species of trees to discover plus tranquil lakes and winding cycling paths to enjoy. Meanwhile, Knole Deer Park – the last remaining deer park in Kent – is filled with ancient oak, hawthorn and birch, and is the perfect place for autumnal walks – twigs, acorns and leaves gleefully snapping underfoot. WHERE TO STAY: DUCK LODGE, SEVENOAKS, KENT
Nature lovers can be at one in this white weather-boarded lodge. It may have a timeless, bucolic location, surrounded by fields and orchards, but inside rooms have contemporary features juxtaposed with exposed beams and wooden floors. Wrap up and spend the day at nearby Toys Hill – the place that inspired Octavia Hill to found The National Trust – or head to Emmetts Garden, from which you can walk to Chartwell, the family home of Winston Churchill, renowned for its pretty setting. On your return, you’ll be greeted by the resident ducks, and you can kick back, drink in hand, by the cosy wood-burner.
TAKE A LEAF OUT OF NORFOLK
From Foxley Wood, Norfolk’s largest primeval woodland, to Wayland Wood, Norfolk has a wild and fairy-tale-like feel to its woods and countryside. Nature’s own firework display, the autumn palette is impressive – with maple, oaks, beeches, sycamore and chestnut trees coming to life with their varying hues. WHERE TO STAY: IVY HOUSE, BRESSINGHAM, NORFOLK
Crunch down a sweeping drive to arrive at Ivy House, a newlyrenovated Grade II-listed Georgian mansion house. A grand staircase leads to five bedrooms, which have period furniture, decorative fireplaces and decadent bathrooms. Downstairs, meanwhile, there is a formal dining room, drawing room and games snug – ideal for youngsters. Set within the 12-acre Bressingham Gardens, you can stay put and explore the year’s finest hour right on your doorstep. Otherwise, head to Thetford Forest to discover the UK’s largest man-made lowland forest and its walking trails. Best of all, after a long traipse in the countryside, you’ll be able to return to your own manor house and rest your legs in the house’s bubbling hot tub.

GLORIOUS GLOUCESTERSHIRE
An Area of Outstanding Beauty, the Cotswolds is renowned for its honey-coloured villages, impossibly pretty pastoral scenes and famous gardens, such as Hidcote Manor Gardens. This Arts and Crafts space has intricately designed outdoor ‘rooms’ by American horticulturist Lawrence Johnston. Another famous local name is Laurie Lee, who was born in Stroud in Gloucestershire, and who captured the very essence of this corner of England in Cider With Rosie. As summer segues into autumn – you can see his inspiration first hand, and immerse yourself in the year’s most colourful season at the Laurie Lee Wood nature reserve in Slad. WHERE TO STAY: PINKNEY COURT LODGE, TETBURY, GLOUCESTERSHIRE
For a touch of grandeur, this comfy lodge, dating back to the 16th century, actually occupies the west wing of a country manor house. While the chic interiors will impress – think roll-top baths, French furniture and elegant wallpapers – it’s the setting that you will fall in love with. Nearby is Westonbirt Arboretum, which has 15,000 trees and 17 miles of trails to explore. A highlight is the Silk Wood Trail, which will take you through Westonbirt’s collection of maple trees, including the famous national Japanese maple collection.
SHOWSTOPPING SURREY
It might be on London’s threshold, but Surrey should not be overlooked when it comes to searching for that magical kaleidoscope of countryside colours. The Surrey Hills turn a rich gold at this time of year, as oak, beech and chestnut trees go through the changes. While Box Hill, with its magnificent views over rolling hills, Leith Hill and Hindhead Commons are just a few of the area’s highlights. In fact, Surrey is considered one of England’s most leafy counties and is also home to the flagship gardens of the Royal Horticultural Society – RHS Garden Wisley – which comes alive with seasonal hues and special autumnal events, such as bat sessions and pumpkin-carving. WHERE TO STAY: THE SURREY MANOR, WONERSH, SURREY
History fans and luxury lovers will both be in their element in this 10-bedroom property. The UK’s oldest moated Manor House, mentioned in the Domesday Book in 1086, it oozes a sense of heritage (check out the 16th century dining room). But a makeover adds a top-end feel with a glass breakfast room, library, heated indoor swimming pool and elegant décor. It is perfect for exploring the Winkworth to Oakhurst Wonder Walk, which takes ramblers to three National Trust properties – Hydon’s Ball, the 16th century Oakhurst Cottage and Winkworth Arboretum. Home to Japanese, American and Norwegian maples, not to mention more than 1,000 plant species, the Arboretum becomes a painterly sight with leaves showboating their extraordinary shades.
THE ENCHANTING FOREST
The New Forest in Hampshire transforms once autumn arrives: heather shines with its varying shades of vibrant purple and pink, fungi appears as if by magic, and the forest canopy glows with its russets, golds and reds. Crunch across the New Forest Downs and make the most of misty mornings and sunny afternoons. For those keen to find out more about the heritage and wildlife of the forest, book into one of the 70 guided walks by local experts, as part of the autumnal New Forest National Park Walking Festival (13 – 28 October). WHERE TO STAY: KINGS HYDE COTTAGE, LYMINGTON, HAMPSHIRE
Found in the heart of the National Park, staying at this snug bolthole means you’ll have the forest glades, ancient woodland and open moors minutes from your home-from-home. The perfect romantic hideaway for two, you can use it as a base to indulge your inner arboreal passion. The New Forest boasts oak trees dating back 800 years, and explorers can walk through a rainbow of colours by taking off on foot from nearby Lymington to Brockenhurst (from where, on a clear day, you can see the Isle of Wight). hen the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge jetted off on honeymoon after their 2011 wedding, they chose a private island in the Seychelles for their first romantic holiday as man and wife. And William and Kate aren’t the only famous newlyweds to head to the islands. George and Amal Clooney, Brad Pitt and Jennifer Aniston, Salma Hayek and François-Henri Pinault, Ronan and Storm Keating and heiress Nicky Hilton and James Rothschild all honeymooned in the Indian Ocean paradise. With two royal weddings this year love is very much in the air. But the Seychelles are about much more than romance, as I discovered. An archipelago of 115 granite and coral islands off the east coast of Africa, just south of the equator, the Seychelles enjoys a warm, tropical climate and boasts white, sandy beaches, palm trees and coral reefs. Largely untouched until the 18th century when the French settled there, the islands were taken over by the British 130 years later and populated by African slaves rescued from ships to work on cotton, sugar and coconut plantations, before gaining independence in 1976. To this day, the Seychelles’ cultural history is evident in their Creole language and food. We split our time between two luxury five-star hotels on two separate islands – 86
The Seychelles enjoys a warm, tropical climate and boasts white, sandy beaches
the Hilton Northolme Resort and Spa on the main island of Mahé and the Hilton Labriz Resort and Spa, 20km away on private Silhouette Island. We were whisked here by helicopter over blue seas and palm-fringed beaches and, after being welcomed with rum cocktails, taken to our beachfront villa, where we enjoyed breakfast served on our terrace before freshening up in the outdoor rain shower. There are 111 wooden villas in all – some with private plunge pools – and for complete privacy there’s the Silhouette Estate, a twobedroom, two-bathroom presidential residence boasting panoramic views, private pool and beach access, outdoor entertaining area, dining gazebo and butler service. The only hotel on the island, the Labriz, has seven restaurants and bars, tennis courts, a swimming pool, spa and a fitness centre, kids’ club and a five-
star PADI dive centre, which also has kayaks and snorkelling equipment for hire. After beginning our day with a yoga lesson on the beach, we took a guided hike into the hills above the resort, hopped aboard a boat for an afternoon out on the reef and enjoyed a cookery lesson at the resort’s Creole restaurant, based in Grann Kaz, a lovely historic plantation house that was once the home of the family that used to own the island. For the second leg of our stay we headed to the main island of Mahé and the Hilton Northolme, which is a convenient 25 minutes from the airport and has a private beach, infinity pool, ocean-front spa and three restaurants offering al fresco dining and spectacular views. These lush surroundings are the perfect hideaway, as James Bond author Ian Fleming, who wrote his novel For Your Eyes Only here, discovered. There are 40 stilted villas and suites dotted around the hillside, including the two-bedroom presidential villa, with its large private pool, whirlpool baths, original artwork and terrace overlooking Beau Vallon Bay.
From here, take a taxi or hire car to the island’s fabulous beaches, head to the covered market or the Botanical Gardens in the capital Victoria or charter a boat and explore the St Anne National Marine Park. Island Style Boat Excursions (praslinboattours.com) goes to Praslin, La Digue and Moyenne Island – uninhabited apart from its population of more than 100 giant tortoises and an array of birds. Snorkel among rays, turtles and baby sharks, moor up for lunch and explore the island. The Seychelles is certainly hard to beat for a romantic getaway and, even if you’re not travelling with a special someone, you’re sure to fall madly in love with its beautiful islands.

I
have a new found respect for jockeys. In the saddle for the first time in 15 years and safe in the knowledge that my chosen steed is the calmest of the bunch, I set off on what promises to be a romantic ride along the Italian coast. The horse, however, has other ideas. Not one metre out of the stable and he’s taken over the directions, charging towards the field of juicy grass he’s no doubt been lusting after from his pen. My feeble kicks go unnoticed and the hour-long pony trek I’ve embarked on quickly becomes more of a battle of strength – a fight he often wins. There is a positive about my stop-start journey, however: is it gives me time to admire the view. We’re on the outskirts of Castiglione della Pescaia, a coastal town in the Tuscan region of Maremma. We trek (or shuffle) through fields of dancing buttercups and bright poppies, flanked by a view of the Mediterranean Sea. There are cypress trees, olive groves, vineyards and a beach of flourfine sand; it is Tuscany epitomised. It’s hard to imagine this former marshland as anything other than picturesque, but these rolling hills were once an uninhabitable swamp. Its appearance today owes much to Leopold II, the Grand Duke of Tuscany. Known as one of the ‘enlightened despots’ of the 1800s, Leopold II authorised the Tuscan constitution in 1848, which paved the way for a marginally free press, removed freedom restrictions imposed by his predecessors – the house of Medici – and introduced a rational taxation system. In between fighting for a more liberal Italy, he called for marshland in the Tuscan area to be drained – including Maremma. It’s here that he set up his holiday home, a terracotta villa where he and his court would retreat during the blazing summer months.

ALL IMAGES COURTESY OF L’ANDANA
When I arrive at his former bolthole, now the fivestar L’Andana hotel, it’s easy to see why he settled on this particular spot. Cypress trees line the mile-long driveway like fluffy green needles, through which you can catch the odd glimpse of grapevines and the occasional grazing bull. Beyond that, it’s fields for miles. Apparently peace and quiet were top of Leopold’s agenda. Centuries later and the Duke’s desire for a quiet life is still very much being fulfilled at L’Andana. The building has been sensitively decorated to match the Italian grandeur once awarded to its original owner, with ornate furniture, trickling lions-head water fountains and grand chandeliers. But it also has something of a country house feel to it; a rustic retreat dancing on the edge of opulence. Guests roam around barefoot, eating picnics of burrata and crusty Tuscan bread on the grass and lounging by the outdoor pool. There’s also an indoor pool for rainy days, a sauna and an ESPA spa for post-pony trek massages. As to be expected from a Tuscan hotel, the food is outstanding. In the villa’s former granary you’ll find La Trattoria Enrico Bartolini, the eponymous restaurant headed up by the Tuscan Michelin-starred chef. Bartolini’s contemporary take on Tuscan food is both delicious and daring: fish tartare, prawns served both raw and deep-fried, traditional Tuscan soup and a runny chocolate dessert are among the highlights. At the more casual La Villa restaurant, chunky spindles of pasta are topped with beef ragout, grilled sea bass is served with fresh broad beans and dessert is an indulgent tiramisu – it is delicious. All of the produce, including the estate’s own olive oil,

is grown onsite – on more than one occasion I spot a chef returning to the kitchen with a bowl full of fresh greens. It also boasts its own Acquagiusta winery, where four types of vino are produced – oenophiles can partake in a wine tour and tasting. Cycle tours and horse riding excursions can also be arranged by the concierge, and there is a golf course nearby should you wish to practise your swing – I, however, find the villa is best used for what it was originally intended: relaxation. A long weekend goes by all too quickly and I know I’m not the only guest who wishes they could spend their whole summer here. Of all the Duke’s successes, this is perhaps his greatest. isbon is a city of contrasts: a mishmash of old-world charm and contemporary cutting edge. A remarkable resilience has seen the city bounce back from cataclysmic natural disasters, repressive dictatorship and economic difficulties. Yet Portugal’s capital has shaken off its complex history to emerge as Europe’s hottest travel destination – without losing sight of its roots.
Touch of tradition
The wide, leafy Avenida da Liberdade flashes by in a swirl of grand statues and bubbling fountains. A dusky-pink façade comes into focus as we slip down a gear: Palácio Foz and its ornate baroque detailing. The city tour is underway – but this isn’t your typical open-top bus affair. I’m perched in the sidecar of a 1960s Dnepr; my boyfriend John riding pillion behind our guide João de Lemos Soares, a straight-talking Lisbonite of solid stature and a twirly moustache. Reaching the Baixa, João deftly guides the motorcycle down the city’s increasingly narrow alleys, skimming across cobbled streets, past shuttered houses coated in beautiful azulejo tiles. As we nudge into the Chiado district, the gleaming designer stores and sleek hotels begin to give way to rustic tascas plating up Portuguese tapas, tiny traditional shops selling handmade goods, and historic cafes serving bica coffee – many clustered around Rua Garrett. It’s here that we park up, first heading for Livraria Bertrand, a cavernous bookstore with curved arches and wooden shelves that wouldn’t look out of place in Hogwarts. João pauses by a shelf stacked with copies of The Book of Disquiet, the most famous work of Lisbon-born Fernando Pessoa – Portugal’s greatest contemporary poet and a figurehead in 20th-century modernism. “What’s so special about this place?” João asks. While this is certainly a charming haunt, there’s nothing that particularly catches the eye; John and I glance nervously at each other, feeling like we’ve fallen at the first hurdle. “This is the oldest operating bookstore in the world, dating back to 1732,” he explains. There’s even an entry in the Guinness Book of World Records to prove it (and a lovely little accolade that can be stamped on any book you buy). Just across the street is Café A Brasileira, an old-style coffee house which opened in 1905. Here, poets, artists and freethinkers 94
would furtively debate politics in hushed tones over strong bica coffees during the dictatorship of the Salazar regime (1926–74) – a time of censorship and repression. During this period, the regime went to extreme and often brutal lengths to control the population and retain its former colonies, until it was overthrown in the 1974 revolution. Today, tourists rub shoulders with locals in this Art Deco haunt, with its impressive artwork, mirrored walls, wooden booths and a long oak bar. “Don’t queue for a table,” João advises. “Instead, stand at the bar to grab an espresso like the locals do.” We take the edge off the punchy coffee with sugar (from sachets bearing Fernando Pessoa quotes) – it’s called ‘dark tar’ for a reason. Leaving the dimly lit café, we cross the intricately patterned calçada Portuguesa (Portuguese pavement) to Figaro’s, a small vintage barbershop that, João tells us, is the second oldest in the world (London allegedly hosts the first). Here, locals recline in leather chairs as barbers expertly shape their beards with razors; traditional wet shaves and 1920s to 1950s hairstyles are nostalgic throwbacks and create something of a time warp.
T R AV E L
Back on the bike, we head up towards the Bairro Alto, passing Convento do Carmo, once the largest church in the city but now partial ruins following the 1755 earthquake, which destroyed around 80 per cent of the city and killed 40,000 of the 270,000 population. Strangely, it’s all the more beautiful for its wishbone Gothic arches and scattered columns that remain exposed to the elements. Inside is the Museu Arqueológico do Carmo, worth a visit for its intricately carved stone tomb of Ferdinand I and a rather startling Egyptian sarcophagus and pair of pre-Columbian mummies. The ruins face a lovely tree-shaded square dotted with al fresco restaurants, where groups of friends linger over bowls of fresh seafood and glasses of crisp wine. Continuing on, we weave past the trendy design boutiques of Bairro Alto and a clutch of tiny shops selling handmade ceramics and cork goods (Portugal supplies around 50 per cent of the world’s cork), before pulling up beside the pastelcoloured street Rua São João da Lapa. “Do you like the house I’m considering buying?” João asks. “It’s a great two-storey with ample space…” Following his pointed finger, we see a thin pale-blue house that can only be three metres deep. Despite its slender proportions, Lisbon’s narrowest building is liveable, and even crops up on Airbnb from time to time. Down on Rua de Belém, running parallel to the Rio Tejo, we pick up speed and hurtle past the blush-pink Berardo Collection, a contemporary art museum whose rotating works may include Andy Warhol or Eric Fischl. To our left, the 54m-high Padrão dos Descobrimentos soars above the river, a landmark since 1960 when it was built to commemorate the 500th anniversary of the death of Prince Henry the Navigator. A statue of the famed Portuguese explorer leads a line of stone figures of national heroes marching around the marble monument – King Alfonso V, Luís de Camões and Vasco da Gama among them. Shortly after, the magnificent Torres de Belém appears and looping back we pause in a quiet side street. Jutting out over the water, the fortress dates back to 1520 and gives a nod to Lisbon’s Golden Age, when Portugal controlled a maritime empire stretching from Brazil to Macau. “It was built to defend the mouth of the Tagus,” says João, “although at that time it would have been nearer the centre of the river – the 1755 earthquake changed the course of the water.” Inside is filled with elaborate 15th-century Manueline decorative stonework. A very steep staircase leads to

four levels – each with river views, culminating with a top terrace overlooking Belém. There are also the dungeons where Dom Miguel once locked up political prisoners in the 19th century. Next, it’s time for a pit stop – at something of an institution. Pastéis de Belém has been rustling up pastéis de nata since 1837, using a secret recipe first developed at the Jerónimos Monastery next door. Unfortunately, the exquisite nature of the egg custard tarts is better known than the ingredients behind them, so you can expect a long queue snaking out of the door. Luckily, João’s connections immediately secure us a table on the foliage-filled outdoor terrace along with a plate of three cinnamon-dusted natas. “Another one?” he asks after I inhale the first. Reluctant to appear greedy, I shake my head politely. “So you don’t like them?” he demands with faux indignation. This rigmarole cajoles me into another three custard tarts and John into five – not that we’re complaining, they’re delicious. Full to bursting, we begin our journey back to Four Seasons Hotel Ritz, a luxurious hotel overlooking Eduardo VII Park that offers unique city experiences – including the motorcycle sidecar tour. Attacking one of Lisbon’s notorious hills, the motor sputters slightly and the needle on the speedometer flickers lower. Muttering under his breath, João pulls over on the summit. While I’m no engineer, it transpires a colleague has forgotten to properly insert a spark plug. “Heads will roll,” João says wryly. We laugh at his, presumably, dry humour. The design of this vintage motorcycle means it extraordinarily chugs on regardless of human error – a resilience not unlike Lisbon’s own.

Where are we now? Sculpture by Michael Pennie and Andrew Sabin Until 19 October
Where are we now? This question comes up time and again in assessing where we are in life, work and the world. In bringing Michael Pennie and Andrew Sabin together in an exhibition of their sculpture we see two ways of considering this question; Pennie has chosen to show a selection of works created over the past forty-six years, while Sabin decided to make entirely new pieces, in an energetic frenzy of creative activity. Not knowing that they had been former colleagues and held each other’s work in high regard, the decision to curate the exhibition was based on an intangible feeling that their sculpture would set up a curious and informative dialogue. Michael Pennie’s work had not been seen in a tough corporate environment before and the sheer scale of Andrew Sabin’s new and colourful sculptures would meet the lofty heights of the Lobby of One Canada Square.

BIG BOTTLE COUNT Following 2017’s record breaking Big Bottle Count held and coordinated by Thames21 and the #OneLess bottle campaign, the project returned last month visiting 18 sites by the Thames. It is the biggest plastic bottle monitoring project in London, with 4,500 bottles retrieved in only one day last year. As part of the Totally Thames annual celebration of the River Thames, it aims to highlight the amount of pollution that enters the Thames whilst also helping with the clean-up. This year, over 100 volunteers took part in removing and counting the plastic bottles that have been discarded in the river. As a result, an outstanding 3,249 bottles were collected and separated into different types of bottles such as soft drinks, milk, and still water to understand which types of bottles are most prevalent. Single-use plastic drink bottles are one of the most common litter culprits in the Thames. One volunteer commented: “Plastic can take up to 450 years to decompose, so removing plastic bottles from the Thames foreshore, that would eventually end up in the river and potentially the sea, is an important task that we were glad to help with.” For further information, please visit www.thames21.org.uk

In fact, in the world, if you ask me—it’s such a unique island, and the concept of the creative community; I was sold.” A self-taught photographer who is instrumental in running the on-site gallery, Sokari finds inspiration in his surrounds, like the vibrant carnation-red and cobalt-blue City Island buildings, the texture of the bricks, a winsome flock of birds at the nearby ecological park. WORD FOR WORD
T
hirty years ago, Canary Wharf began to take shape. What was once a dwindling Docklands area quickly became a thriving business, residential and retail hub, where 120,000 people work. Today, it is one of the most recognised business landscapes in the world – and it’s growing. In late 2019, Canary Wharf’s new community space Wood Wharf will launch, boasting 3,600 new homes, 380,000 sq ft of retail space and eight acres of public space, plazas and parks. There will also be a collection of public art, an NHS surgery and a primary school. In anticipation of the new space, and to mark the estate’s 30th anniversary, Canary Wharf Group has launched its #UnpredictiveText campaign, a series of randomly selected words taken from the writing of journalists who’ve captured the estate’s story. “Canary Wharf has become one of the safest, best maintained, connected and most vibrant districts in London,” said Brian De’ath, director of residential sales at Canary Wharf Group. “Wood Wharf is the next major stage in the masterplan and it is wonderful to see this celebrated so vividly through the #UnpredictiveText campaign. Although the word combinations have been randomly generated, they perfectly represent the forward-thinking community and celebrate how far the estate has come in 30 short years.” The first residential building, One Park Drive, will offer 345

homes as well as access to a private roof terrace and a health and fitness club with a swimming pool, Jacuzzi, sauna, steam room and fitness studio. Apartments at One Park Drive start from £825,000, 020 7001 3800, residential.sales@canarywharf.com, canarywharf.com/residential
