EDITOR’S LETTER September of course kicks off the unofficial beginning of autumn. The children are back at school, we are at our desks, the leaves are changing and the days are growing shorter. But this month also allows us to re-focus our energies, get back into a routine and shake off our summer sluggishness. For many of us – and this may be just a throwback to school days – September represents the real ‘new year’, the time for us to take stock and enjoy spending more time at home. Luckily it appears my own house is now – inadvertently – fashionable. Maximalism in terms of interior design is now officially a thing. It’s time to move on from the stark and cold minimalist look and instead decorate our homes with bold colours, prints and textures. Wallpapers and furniture should be bountiful and bright and knick-knacks are making a comeback. On page 60, brilliant lifestyle writer Julia Zaltzman explains how to perfect the cleverly cluttered and lived-in look. I know in my office almost everyone has mentioned how much we are looking forward to wrapping up a bit more. To inspire us to fully embrace the new season, look no further than our fashion pages for AW18 inspiration, starting on page 29. Coats, knits, boots and hats offer the perfect excuse to purge our wardrobes of the flimsy and decide on the most stylish cover-ups to see us through to winter. And if you are thinking of investing in a new car as the perfect accessory to your winter wardrobe then the Porsche Panamera 4S Sport Turismo certainly would look good coasting down the streets of London. Chris Hall reviews the practical yet punchy drive on page 24. September in London, of course, has also become synonymous with the capital’s fashion week. On page 46, we interview stylist to the stars Bay Garnett about how she progressed in her career – and she has clearly loved every moment. As author Simon Sinek says: “Working hard for something we don’t care about is called stress; working hard for something we love is called passion.” Good to remember as we all head back to work. Enjoy the issue. DAWN ALFORD Content Director

f ever a man was looking to run away from the spotlight he could do worse than move to Bahrain. Such was the decision taken by Michael Jackson in the immediate aftermath of the trial that, in the summer of 2005, cleared him of 10 charges of child abuse, including molestation, kidnap and the supply of alcohol to the then underage Gavin Arvizo. Despite the victory, the ordeal of the trial, and the lurid details of Jackson’s personal life that were revealed during the four-month court case, left him a broken man: his innocence proven but his image, long mired in controversy, left permanently tainted.
15
Like so many of Jackson’s plans, his Gulf State reinvention was to leave a trail of debt and discord
At the new National Portrait Gallery exhibition, Michael Jackson: On the Wall, there are no images of the performer’s little-known time spent living in Bahrain. It’s only by glimpsing into this episode that we can truly understand how the subsequent comeback shows scheduled for London’s O2 arena were perhaps always doomed to never take place. “He went into total seclusion”, an unnamed source told Jackson’s biographer J. Randy Taraborrelli. “He almost lost it all – his freedom, his family, his career. You don’t just bounce back from something like that.” To run away from his Neverland Ranch seemed entirely understandable. Yet Jackson caused anger among his own family who, despite staying loyal to him during the trial, were to see almost nothing of him in the months following his acquittal. Not blessed with the oil wealth of its neighbouring Gulf States, Manama, the capital of Bahrain, has a distinctly less glitzy air to it than Dubai or Doha. Tiny Bahrain’s main function in the region is as a Vegas-esque getaway for Saudi Arabians. The two nations are linked by a ‘friendship bridge’ and Bahrain’s laws on alcohol and sex outside of marriage are more relaxed, so groups of men, weekending from Riyadh, drinking beer and fraternising with tourists and prostitutes, are a common sight in the hotel bars of Manama. Jackson, unsurprisingly, had no desire to sample the less than sophisticated nightlife of the city. He took advantage of a connection made previously by his brother Jermaine, who converted to Islam after a visit to the island nation, to hole up in the royal palace. Befriended by Sheikh Abdullah bin Hamad bin Isa AlKhalifa, Jackson allowed himself to be pampered by the prince who, over the following months, would claim to be looking after 16
almost all of Jackson’s business interests. So, in temperatures regularly exceeding 40°C, Jackson’s new life in Bahrain, which he intended to be permanent, took shape. Rarely seeing anybody other than his children and their nanny, Jackson became a regular at the China Garden restaurant inside the sumptuous Gulf Hotel Bahrain, hiring out the whole eatery and dining, utterly alone, amid scores of empty tables. Suffering from persistent nightmares and exhibiting signs of what his inner circle would later claim were signs of posttraumatic stress disorder, Jackson began therapy sessions for the first time in his life. “He felt totally victimised by Gavin, the rest of the scheming Arvizos and also by the Santa Barbara district attorney”, one of the inner circle told Taraborrelli. “God forgive me but I hate that kid,” Jackson is said to have remarked. “I so hate that kid”. What would turn out to be one of Jackson’s last chances to reinvent his life, well out of the way of the US media spotlight, took only a matter of months to fall apart. Living in a mansion a couple of miles south of Manama, he did receive occasional guests from the music world, including a member of 50 Cent’s G-Unit rap group.

DJ Whoo Kid claimed to have had a number of meetings with Jackson and, as he later recalled, gave the fallen megastar some blunt advice when Jackson asked him about how he should change his image: “I told him he needs to cut his hair, get some million-dollar earrings, get a million-dollar watch and take all them spaceship clothes off.” The idea of Jackson returning to the spotlight as a muscled, shaven-haired bad boy was, for better or worse, never to become manifest. While occasional sightings of Jackson and his children in the shopping malls of Manama prompted speculation about his mind set (he often wore the veil, abaya and gloves typically worn by conservative Bahraini women), rumours spread locally that a Jackson-endorsed music academy and theme park were in the development stages. Like so many of Jackson’s plans, both professional and personal in his later years, his Gulf State reinvention was to end quickly and leave a trail of debt and discord in its wake. In June 2006 it was announced that Jackson had parted company with his representatives and legal team in Bahrain, and was heading to an undisclosed destination in Europe. Lawsuits followed closely behind his abrupt diparture, with LU X U R Y L ON D ON .C O.U K
Sheikh Abdulla suing Jackson for $7 million over accusations that the star reneged on a contract for an album, autobiography and a stage play after taking millions of dollars in advances. The case was settled out of court but a mere 11 months after leaving Bahrain, Jackson, aged just 50, died in Los Angeles. Ultimately, according to many in Jackson’s inner circle, the desire to be accepted in the West again simply made his Middle Eastern exile impossible to sustain. Nearly a decade on from his death, this strange episode appears like a lost opportunity. The chance to record music in the studio that the Sheikh built for him, the time to begin reaping the benefits of the therapy he had belatedly embarked upon and the opportunity to take serious time out of the spotlight were all within his grasp. Perhaps Jackson’s tragedy is that, despite the quiet and calm that Bahrain offered him, his need to perform and his hunger to be loved by the world was what drove him away from the tiny island that, initially, promised so much. THE DUKE OF HAZARD AHEAD OF THIS MONTH’S GOODWOOD REVIVAL, THE ESTATE’S CURRENT PROPRIETOR, CHARLES GORDON-LENNOX, THE 11TH DUKE OF RICHMOND, DISCUSSES EXOTIC CARS AND HIS COLOURFUL HISTORY BEHIND THE WHEEL WORDS JEREMY TAYLOR

he old kitchens behind Goodwood House haven’t seen much culinary activity for years. The buildings were once a working hub for the grand house – the ancestral seat of the Duke of Richmond since 1697. Charles Gordon-Lennox, the 11th Duke of Richmond, is the present incumbent – and perhaps best known for his love of cars. As the driving force behind the annual Goodwood Festival of Speed, he has access to a smorgasbord of the rarest, most exotic vehicles on the planet. A double garage simply wouldn’t be large enough to house his collection, so the Duke, 63, uses the kitchens as the ultimate man cave – although he rarely likes to speak of it. “Honestly, there’s not much in there at all really,” he says. “If the house did go up in smoke, I would probably grab the keys to my Lancia Aurelia. “It dates back to the mid-1950s and was very advanced for the era. I love the architecture – an absolutely fantastic piece of modernist design, so laid back and one of the most beautiful coupés ever made. It’s quite quick with very complicated suspension. The cost of building the Aurelia almost killed off Lancia for good.” The Duke says he rarely gets to drive the Aurelia, which he bought at auction during the 20th anniversary of the Festival of Speed in 2013. His late grandfather also enjoyed a passion for Lancias, designing the world’s first production car featuring Art Deco aero styling. It was later incorporated into the 1934 Lancia Augusta. “My grandfather loved Lancias – they were the best machines of that era,” he explains. “My Aurelia is black with grey cloth and the first production car with a V6 engine. 20
Perhaps another reason I love it is the Lancia is the same age as me.” The Duke launched the Festival of Speed at Goodwood in 1993, partly to help keep the 12,000-acre estate afloat. Held right outside his bedroom window, it has grown to become one of the world’s most popular motoring events. It later spawned the Goodwood Revival – a retro fest of fancy dress and classic cars. “I wanted to bring motorsport back to Goodwood because this place is steeped in motor racing history,” he says. “My grandfather launched the Goodwood Motor Circuit in 1948 and I’ve grown up in or around cars.” What else is parked out the back? Naturally, there’s a Rolls-Royce Ghost as the marque has been based on the Goodwood Estate in West Sussex since 2003. The 42-acre site employs more than 1,700 workers and around 20 cars

home to England and still have it. That car looks like it has been dredged up from the bottom of a lake. If the devil was a car, that would be it.” The Duke recently bought a Porsche 911 GT2 RS. The supercar was officially launched at the Festival of Speed in 2017 and produces 690 horsepower from a 3.8-litre twin turbo engine. With a lightweight magnesium roof and other body panels made of carbon, it will accelerate to 60mph in 2.7 seconds. He mentions that he has a ‘modest’ fleet of more conventional cars in his garage too, among them an Audi RS6, several old Land Rovers and a Range Rover. He also has a Defender Works V8 70th Edition on order – the most powerful Defender ever built. “I learnt to drive around Goodwood estate when I was a teenager. One day when my parents were out, a friend and I borrowed a Land Rover and tore around the fields. We were doing well until my friend accelerated through a gate and stuffed it straight in the side of a bloody horse box. It was totally annihilated but my parents took it very well.” They weren’t so impressed when the 16-year-old Duke ‘borrowed’ his mother’s Morris 1100 and took to the famous Goodwood hill climb, now an integral part of the Festival of Speed. Heading downhill, he hit gravel

Designed by Sir Nicholas Grimshaw – who also created the Eden Project – the factory features a roof covered with sedum plants that hides the building from the road. “I’m lent a lot of Rolls-Royces,” the Duke says. “Obviously, they’re a very nice drive. My favourite is a Phantom coupé that was built especially for the Festival of Speed as a course car a few years back. It’s orange inside and has an orange line down the paintwork. It sounds horrible, but it’s dead cool.” In 2010, the Duke visited the famous Bonneville Salt Flats in America to try his hand at speed driving. “I was there with my son, Charles, and we both fell in love with hot rods. I went off the idea of owning superexpensive cars. I liked the idea of creating my own individual vehicle instead. “In the end, I shipped a 1929 Model A Ford back LU X U R Y L ON D ON .C O.U K

and crashed into some trees. “It was one of the world’s worst cars and I did myself a lot of damage. I broke the top of my femur. Weirdly, I was so young they decided not to pin the bone, so I spent four months on my back with a leg in the air. It was cruelty to children.” Undeterred, the Duke bought a Morgan three-wheeler: “My parents were dead against motorbikes but they agreed I could drive the Morgan on a motorcycle licence at 16. That was a big mistake. “The Morgan cost £200 in Littlehampton and was absolutely lethal. It was fitted with a horrid Ford 100E engine – not very nice at all. The back wheel also had a tendency to fall off.” The Duke was “furious” when he failed his driving test at the first attempt: “I can’t actually remember what I failed on – it was something stupid like not checking the rear-view mirror. I was unbelievably angry because in those days, all teenagers wanted was the freedom to get around.” He was even less happy when his father gave him a Datsun Cherry as his first road car. “It wasn’t my finest moment. I was working for the film director Stanley Kubrick at the time and travelling up and down to London.” Although the Datsun lacked street cred, the hatchback survived the Duke’s determination to destroy it: “I thrashed the hell out of it and revved to the red line for every gear change. Fortunately, the cook spilt a flagon of milk on the back seat. The smell was so bad it had to go.” The Duke then indulged in a string of fast cars, including a stripped-out Mini Cooper S and an Austin Healey 3000. He took the latter on honeymoon to France when he married his

first wife, Sally Clayton. “It dripped hot oil on her feet and then the bloody thing blew up.” A career in advertising afforded him a Porsche 924 Carrera GT, which he kept for 13 years until the first Festival of Speed in 1993. “I should never have got rid of it but when the engine gave up it went,” he says. “Bad decision.” Porsche became involved in the festival early on and the Duke owned or loaned many of its best cars, including a dark-blue 993 – the last of the air-cooled models – and then, later, a 5.7-litre Carrera GT. “That was a highlight, a quite phenomenal car.” The 924 Carrera GT was also the car the Duke used to make a ‘record’ run from Goodwood House to Chelsea in just 54 minutes. “That was a bit naughty and you’d never get away with it now,” he says. “My grandfather wasn’t a fan of bureaucracy either. The day the 70mph national speed limit came in, he drove a Jensen flat out up the Edgware Road in London. “He was promptly caught by the police and had
to appear in front of Bow Street Magistrates Court. I have a photograph of him coming out of the building sticking up a V-sign to the camera!” Nowadays the Duke claims he has become tired of expensive supercars and has turned his attention to bespoke, American vehicles: “I like the idea of building your own car, gathering all the pieces together and creating something unique. “Having that accident when I was 16 really didn’t teach me anything. There probably is some oil running through my veins and over the years I’ve loved every minute behind the wheel.” Goodwood Revival, 7-9 September 2018, day tickets from £55, goodwood.com

LET’S GET PHYSICAL PORSCHE’S MOST PRACTICAL PANAMERA STILL PACKS PLENTY OF PUNCH
WORDS CHRIS HALL
O
nce upon a time, the only place you’d find ‘Porsche’ and ‘practicality’ in close proximity was in the dictionary. Well ok, only if you had a dictionary that contained brand names...but you know what I mean. Then along came the Cayenne, the first Porsche capable of clearing a Kensington kerb. It surmounted the more obdurate obstacle – the collective sensibilities of sports car fans the world over – when it became apparent that Porsche was selling so many, it would allow the manufacturer to continue making 911 GT3s, 918 Spyders and Cayman GT4s well into the future. After a few long years, Porsche made the Cayenne look less like a swollen frog as it settled into its position as the godfather of the luxury SUV. About the same time as the Cayenne was getting plastic surgery, Porsche unveiled the Panamera, and the collected purists sighed deeply once more. Not only was this new model big, heavy and frontengined, it looked like a frog that had been run over. By a Cayenne. But Porsche was undaunted. Since the launch of the Cayenne in 2002, sales had rocketed; people wanted cars with 26
You know you’re in a luxury machine from the off Porsche badges that could transport entire families, and there was no sign that increasing volume hurt the brand’s reputation. The addition of the Panamera poured fuel on the fire. Porsche now makes more Panameras than 911s, and produces nearly five times as many cars (more than 250,000 in 2017) than it did in 2002, while revenues are up fourfold. Clearly, to be a Panamera-doubter is to be on the wrong side of history, or at least economics. When Porsche followed the Cayenne pattern and prettied up the Panamera in 2017 – the biggest difference was sharpening up that bulbous rear – I started to see it in a whole new light. Given the chance to drive one earlier this year, I was actually pretty excited.
I would be sitting behind the wheel of the Panamera 4S Sport Turismo. Those last two words, not that you’d guess, mean this is the even bigger, estate-ier version. To my eye, it’s the most handsome Panamera out there: that lip above the rear window is an essential flourish. In white, it looked every bit of its 5.05m length, but I can’t deny it had presence. With 19-inch wheels, grey brake callipers and a combination of gloss black and brushed steel detailing, it was proof you can spec a car like this very tastefully – with no carbon fibre in sight. Same story on the inside. This is, handsdown, the most modern and attractive cabin I can remember sitting in – sorry, Tesla – with copious brushed metal, screens

Rover Sport owners that there is another way – and, while I can’t say I matched those exact figures, the Sport Turismo was never lacking in punch. It’s an effortless cruiser, dispatching distance with a grunt rather than a roar, bearing four adults and 520 litres of clobber with no fuss. My strongest criticism would be that despite the legion of acronyms (PASM, PSM, TMP, PAA…) drafted in to manage the ride, the car struggled to remain composed over typical British A- and B-road, hunting between bumps and following the camber. It’s us, not you, Porsche, but this is where a great many Panameras will make their homes. In the gravel car parks of Scotney and Sissinghurst castles, the Sport Turismo’s tailgate provided ample seating for pulling on walking boots – and I can’t lie, it felt good to spray a little mud up those white flanks. On the way back, it swallowed bags of logs and barbecue charcoal cavernously, although, contrary to every other impression of practicality, the boot
that actually integrate into the dashboard design rather than sit there as if some youth from Halfords has superglued them on, and a pleasing robustness to the general switchgear. Confidence-inspiring stuff like this is what has kept Porsche’s stock sky high – you know you’re in a luxury machine from the off. Has bringing out an estate – or shooting brake, if you prefer that title – compromised the other pillar of Porsche’s reputation, though? Is this now a car for grey-haired pootling; a big Volvo for brand snobs? Can it, for want of a better word, hustle? Oh yes. In 4S guise, the Panamera Sport Turismo has a 2.9 litre twin-turbo V6 which turns out 440 horsepower and 550 Nm of torque, which gives you a twotonne car capable of 0-60 in 4.2 seconds and in-gear overtaking from 50-75mph in 2.9 seconds. We took it on a tour of Kent’s National Trust properties – to show all the Range LU X U R Y L ON D ON .C O.U K
is so lavishly upholstered it felt a sin to subject it to typical estate car duties – it is much more a ‘Louis Vuitton luggage’ kind of environment. Some have said they can’t understand the Sport Turismo as an alternative to a ‘proper’ fast estate like the RS6, because it’s less spacious, and therefore wouldn’t add the weight and bulk to a standard Panamera. Me, I’m the other way round: if you’re going to have the big, capable Porsche, get the one that can carry that extra suitcase. It’s still fast, looks better, and is a pleasure to spend a long journey in. It’s not cheap, mind; the model I drove tipped the scales at £113,788, but Porsche didn’t quadruple revenues by being shy with the options pricing (£300 for embossed logo headrests; £200 for a heated steering wheel; £500 for tinted rear lights). Given the same money, I’d go GT3 every time – but then my wife and parents would have to walk to our next stately home trip, and we can’t have that, can we?

rom moisturisers infused with snail secretions to cutesy sheet masks that promise glowing skin, last year we couldn’t get enough of Korea’s quirky and innovative beauty products. While there’s no stopping the jaw-dropping amount of brands still emerging from Seoul (for a streamlined selection, take a peek at Melon & Starfish’s online shop) beauty buffs are now taking note of a quiet revolution happening in a different part of the Far East. Whether it is Shu Uemura’s make-up brushes or Shiseido’s cutting-edge skincare, it’s true to say that there has always been a cult following of Japanese beauty brands in the UK. Given its grown-up principles of simplicity, understatement and elegance, it seems, however, as though the time is right for J-beauty to steal the spotlight from what can often be the gimmick-led K-beauty industry. As reported in The Times, exports of Japanese beauty brands were up just under 30 per cent year on year in 2017 and they are now worth around £1.8bn – indicating a growing surge in popularity. Placing an emphasis on skin clarity, the Japanese approach gives a focus on quality rather than the fun-factor that K-beauty is known for. Millie Kendall MBE, co-founder of retailer BeautyMART, agrees: “My theory is that we are seeing a return of expertise. We want well-made products that give results, with no room for error. Japanese formulations deliver on every level. A-list makeup artist Jillian Dempsey tells me, for example, that she has turned to a number of Japanese beauty products, such as eyeshadows by Addiction, skincare by Three and natural cleansers by Naturaglace, as failproof products to have in her kit.” Launched 27 years ago in the UK, DHC’s Deep Cleansing Oil, says Kendall, is “the perfect Japanese product” which has now finally become mainstream. “It has simple and clear packaging, a great effective formula and a low price tag.” Amanne Sharif at DHC gives her view on the Japanese allure: “In Japan, the attitude towards achieving healthy-looking skin is to spend time and care. This beauty philosophy isn’t about covering up what we deem flaws, but rather it’s about a long tradition of self-care rituals that have been practiced by millions of women. Following a consistent skincare regimen, using highquality ingredients, you can achieve beautiful, radiant skin. The West has always looked to the East for inspiration when it comes to beauty, and even more so in recent years. The traditional rituals and natural ingredients which have been passed down through generations are no longer wrapped in mystique as the world becomes a smaller place and travel a constant. The worldwide growth of traditional Japanese companies, such as DHC, has helped to educate the western world in traditional, effective skincare for all skin conditions.”

“Cleansing has a spiritual dimension in the Japanese culture, and takes inspiration from ancient times” Considered one of the oldest beauty companies in the world, Shiseido – which was launched in 1872 in Tokyo’s Ginza district – also defines J-beauty as one that is steeped in tradition. Miyabi Kumagai, Shiseido’s operational marketing manager, explains: “Korean beauty is trend-led and there is an inherent passion for ‘on demand beauty’. In Japan, by contrast, a product will never be launched without 100 per cent certainty on its qualities and benefits. Japanese beauty is about innovation with a long-term reliability. The Japanese beauty philosophy is very close to healthcare philosophy. “Western culture is more concerned with correcting damages after they have occurred, whereas Japanese beauty care is more about anticipation. For them, everyday prevention is a natural action. All their care routines have been embedded in their minds from a young age, and they prefer anticipating rather than needing an instant emergency superficial cure. They believe that beauty lies on a healthy skin ground base.” With this philosophy in mind, many Japanese beauty rituals and most popular products are based around the art of cleansing and bathing, with many Japanese women spending more than one hour per day in the bath. Cleansing the face is key with a ‘double cleansing’ approach widely adopted by Japanese women. “Cleansing has a spiritual dimension in the Japanese culture, and takes inspiration from ancient times,” says Kumagai. “Purity, and the notion of cleansing, are the key conditions to be as ‘neutral’ as possible to best receive the benefits of natural or spiritual gifts. This can be seen in how much importance Japanese people see in their bathing rituals. For example, the hot springs not only relax, but allow you to cleanse off all superficial imperfections to prepare for a healthy and beautiful skin care ritual.” Combining science with nature is also at the heart of what constitutes J-beauty with brands such as Kanebo’s Sensai blending advanced skincare technology with a signature ingredient of Koishimaru Silk across its product line. “Sensai’s concept is all about the Saho philosophy,” reveals Nadine Styger, Sensai’s training manager. “Saho is a word rooted in ancient Japanese tea ceremonies, but which translates as following a skincare routine in the right order every day, to achieve truly perfect results. Central to this is our custom of Double Cleansing, Double Moisturising and Double Application. We believe that by repeating this gentle and thoughtful method, 34
you will discover the optimum way to encourage your skin’s own protecting abilities, while this revitalising massage also calms your senses.” While many of the established brands that have gained a stellar status outside of Japan are at the luxury end of the market – their high price points dictated by the amount of scientific know-how and hi-tech ingredients they use – there is also a wave of newer, younger brands garnering attention. Shiseido’s new Waso line, for instance, has streamlined packaging, a lower price tag and innovative formulas to appeal to a younger customer. While at the trend-led BeautyMART store, DHC remains a best-selling brand, Kendall reveals her other top Japanese brands to put on your radar: “Yu-Be Skincare’s Moisturising Skin Cream is a mass best-seller in Japan, with one unit selling every 7.8 seconds. While Fairydrops Mascara, created by Japanese TV personality Aya Yasuda to achieve the perfect doll-like lash, is a cult sell-out in Japan and has just launched here.” With three stores in London, and a focus on using, raw natural ingredients, Shiro is another company which is gaining momentum with a hip, knowing crowd. Products such as Aloe & Cactus Face Water and Kombu Skin Serum are created using traditional methods and contain a minimal amount of ingredients for a clean beauty approach. “There is a centuries-old tradition of beauty practices in Japanese culture,” concludes DHC’s Sharif, “and many people around the world are starting to embrace it. The typical Japanese skincare routine – which is at least four steps – quickly becomes a self-care ritual that produces results. This, coupled with the long tradition of simplicity and a respect for nature’s finest botanicals, translates into the best-kept Japanese beauty secret of skincare.”

How I Did It AHEAD OF THE RETURN OF LONDON FASHION WEEK IN SEPTEMBER, STYLIST BAY GARNETT REVEALS HOW SHE GOT HER FIRST JOB AT VOGUE, HER TOP CHARITY SHOP FINDS AND WHY SHE HAS A PROBLEM WITH INSTAGRAM AS TOLD TO ELLEN MILLARD
ABOVE: BAY GARNETT; ALL OTHER IMAGES: GOLBORNE ROAD COLLECTION BY BAY GARNETT FOR M.I.H JEANS, MIH-JEANS.COM
I never had a desire to be a stylist. I wasn’t into high fashion really, I just didn’t understand why people didn’t go to charity shops. I was really into thrifting, but I didn’t think I could have a career from that.
We’d find amazing stuff. Portobello Road on a Friday morning is heaven.
I helped a fanzine create a fake campaign using old clothes. Saint Laurent became Salvation Army and Calvin Klein became Cancer Care. They looked like the real campaigns, but really all of the clothes were from thrift stores. Alexandra Shulman from Vogue saw it and asked me to come and work for her. I did my first Vogue shoot with Kate Moss and Juergen Teller. We used old clothes, and a lot of them went on to be copied by brands like Chloé and Topshop. When I was little, my mum wrote this brilliant book called the Vogue Book of Fashion Photography. I would sit with her when she was working and look through all of the images. That was the first time I remember being seduced by fashion. The internet has changed everything. When I started working for Vogue, you had to look at books and films to get inspiration. Now, everything is on the surface. It makes styling really difficult, because everybody has access to exactly the same references. 46
My best charity shop finds are a really good Dior cape from the 1970s, a Saint Laurent coat and an original Velvet Underground banana T-shirt. I found it in a Salvation Army shop in Queens and I gave it to my friend. I really regret it. What was I thinking?
I did my first Vogue shoot with Kate Moss Instagram is amazing but it’s kind of depressing. It’s just lots of people posting pictures of themselves and getting loads of likes, but where’s the work? Where’s the creativity? It’s just a form of narcissism really. I have always liked to shop in charity shops.
Anita Pallenberg used to live in Chelsea and I’d pick her up and we’d go thrifting.
My most treasured piece of clothing is my banana top, which I used on Kate Moss in my first Vogue shoot. I also love my really big four ply cashmere sweater from Céline; you can’t go wrong. And, of course, I can’t live without my granny pants.

HOW TIME FLIES A DECADE AFTER THE LAUNCH OF ITS FIRST TIMEPIECE, BRITISH AVIATION WATCH SPECIALIST BREMONT LANDS IN CANARY WHARF WORDS RICHARD BROWN
S
poiler alert: this October, Bremont will make a big-screen cameo in latest Marvel blockbuster, Venom, when fan-of-the-brand Tom Hardy wrestles an intergalactic parasite while wearing an all-new, jet-black chronometer from the all-action, resolutely-British, Henleyon-Thames-headquartered watchmaker. Before then, watch fans can get up close and personal with Bremont’s unique brand of military-grade aviation timepieces in Cabot Place, Canary Wharf, where the company has just opened its third stand-alone showroom in the UK. As British as Sherlock Holmes listening to the Shipping Forecast on BBC Radio 4, Bremont was established in 2002 by brothers Nick and Giles English. The company takes its moniker from the surname of an amiable French farmer in whose field the intrepid duo crash-landed in the late 1990s. It was an accident that jolted the brothers
52
into quitting their jobs and dedicating their lives to a shared passion – putting Blighty back on the international watchmaking map. In 2013, six years after the launch of its first watch, the company opened a custom-built headquarters in Henley, recruited 12 watchmakers and four apprentices and brought the processes of movement finishing and final watch assembly in-house. A year later, Bremont went one further, announcing the launch of a Silverstone-based facility dedicated to the production of movement components – the holy grail of watchmaking for even the most heavyweight of brands. Having served as the official timekeeper for the Epsom Derby, the Oxford and Cambridge Boat Race, as well as this year’s Henley Royal Regatta, Bremont opens its Canary Wharf showroom following a flagship in Mayfair’s South Audley Street, as well as outposts in the City’s Royal Exchange, Hong Kong and New York’s Madison Avenue.
STYLE
“With so many clients coming from Canary Wharf, we felt it was the right time and place to broaden our retail network” Says Bremont co-founder, Giles English: “As a British company we have always felt that we needed a strong presence in London. With so many clients coming from Canary Wharf, and such a small representation of the brand there, we felt it was the right time and place to broaden our retail network in the capital. It goes without saying that the demographic of what is one of the UK’s main financial centres is well-aligned to the Bremont customer.” Having invested in state-of-the-art CNC millturning, metal-cutting and finishing machinery – some of which is the first of its kind in Britain – Bremont is now able to manufacture its own baseplates and bridges, a significant step towards achieving mission impossible – engineering a complete movement on home soil. For cutting-edge British watchmaking, set a flightpath for Cabot Place.
FROM THE SKIES TO THE SEAS
Level 1, Cabot Place Bremont’s ‘tested beyond endurance’ mantra isn’t reserved to pilot watches alone. As part of its commitment to ocean preservation, the brand has worked closely with world-renowned free-diver, adventurer, big-wave surfer and ocean environmentalist, Mark Healey, in testing its new dive watch. The Waterman’s open sapphire-back, 500m water-resistant case, helium release valve, anti-shock vibration mount and scratch-resistant sapphire unidirectional bezel have all been tested to the extreme by Healey. The timepiece was launched to help combat the Great Pacific Garbage Patch, the largest of five global areas where rubbish is accumulating in the oceans. A percentage of proceeds are being dedicated to Sustainable Coastlines Hawaii, a grassroots, non-profit organisation which arranges beach clean-ups and public awareness campaigns. Waterman, £4,395

INTERVIEW
E
d Sheeran has a weirdly shaped head. It may harbour a brain that’s produced five number one singles, masterminded a multiple world-record-breaking album and earned a healthy £80 million (and counting), but in proportion it is not. “That’s the Shape of Ed,” Tom Davies grins as he hands me a prototype of the singer’s spectacles. The teal and charcoal acetate frame looks fine front-on, but from the side you can see how its arms twist in the most unlikely of angles – the right one veering slightly to one side and the left, significantly shorter one curving inwards, almost at a right angle. They look uncomfortable – verging on impossible – but I’m assured that they fit to perfection. Tom Davies’ USP is frames shaped to fit both the wearer’s head and their lifestyle, made using materials that should, in theory, last a lifetime, and carved into designs that transcend seasonal trends – an antonym to the BOGOF deals that dominate the high street. His clients include Angelina Jolie, Heston Blumenthal and, yes, Ed Sheeran, all of whom frequent Davies’ stores for his signature specs. “Understanding people and being able to read them is one of my top trumps,” the designer tells me. “Applying empathy to eyewear design is really important and that’s what my brand is all about: working out which frames suit which people, what they’re going to like wearing and what’s going to make them happy. It’s all about quality and fit.” In his west London factory, a team of apprentices is being trained to master the painstaking, but surprisingly speedy, process that goes into a pair of Tom Davies frames. “This is ‘Bespoke-alator’ one,” Davies announces as he shows me around, fondly thumping a now-defunct machine, before showing me ‘Bespoke-alators’ five and eight, still in use. The state-of-the-art tech is used to speed up more menial tasks (such as cutting and binding the materials) before each pair of frames is passed to the craftsmen for polishing, tumbling and shaping. Elsewhere, there’s a separate machine for Davies’ series of horn specs, made from cattle horn farmed sustainably in India, Africa and the UK, and a special bench for his soon-to-be-launched gold- and silverplated frames. The factory opened at the end of last year, a twin to Davies’ original workspace in China. His craftsmen from abroad are teaching the new team the ropes; eventually the British workshop will produce 10,000 bespoke frames a month, each one taking just 22 hours to make.
LU X U R Y L ON D ON .C O.U K
“Being Made in England has got a huge marketing advantage,” Davies explains. “I opened a chain of opticians in Dubai and they weren’t interested. Now we’re Made in England, they can’t get enough of us. It’s the same in America; that’s my biggest growth market at the moment.” The brand’s ready-towear frames will also be made in London, but it’s the bespoke service that is being given the utmost attention – and which, in turn, draws the crowd. “The shape of your nose is unique, so the chances of your glasses being identically shaped are almost impossible. That’s why people hate glasses. They don’t suit anyone,” says Davies. “I was serving a customer recently who had quite a strong brow line, and right at the end of our consultation I noticed his glasses were fogging up. I asked him about it and he said ‘yeah they always do’. We changed the angle of the frames to let the air come through, and now they don’t. That’s what bespoke is.” The brand’s eye tests are equally extensive; while the typical optician will spend 15 minutes with a client, at Tom Davies they spend an hour, questioning their customers about their lifestyle, usage, posture and how they hold objects – all of this, Davies says, will affect your prescription. “My stylist wears her glasses on the end of her nose because she has slight claustrophobia. But it means that her prescription changes,” says Davies. “A lot can depend on what you’re using them for too; I’ve been making Heston Blumenthal a diving mask, and we’ve given him a brand-new prescription that will work specifically for diving.” So Ed Sheeran’s got a pair of specs to witness his sell-out stadium tours and Heston’s got a mask to see a submarine world; who does Davies most wish he could work with? “Prince William. There’s a reason he doesn’t like wearing his glasses, and it’s because they’re rubbish,” he laughs. “The future king needs a good pair of specs.” Tom Davies, Cabot Place

START THE GALLERY OF EVERYTHING ANNOUNCES ITS FIRST EXHIBITION AT THE ANNUAL START ART FAIR
B
eyond the Picassos, Renoirs and Hockneys is a plethora of both budding and established artists quietly making their mark on the art world – and London’s Gallery of Everything is on a mission to put them in the spotlight. The space is the first of its kind in the capital, offering a platform to non-academic and private art makers that flourish beyond the cultural mainstream. Now, for the first time, two artists represented by the gallery will be exhibited at the fifth annual START Art Fair: Johnson Weree and Abu Bakarr Mansaray. Born in 1970 in Sierra Leone, Mansaray overcame his country’s economic, political and social restrictions, focusing his attention on decorating objects and toys using wire and iron, a skill that led him to build futuristic machines that could produce fire, light, air and water. Now based in the Netherlands, the artist’s work has been exhibited at the Foundation Louis Vuitton in Paris, The Jewish Museum in New York and the Guggenheim Museum Bilbao in Spain. Weree spent his childhood in Liberia, where he would salvage discarded materials to produce his creations, using battery fluid for paint and scrap wood for canvas. As an adult with access to pens, pencils and pastels, Weree creates colourful works that depict an alternative reality: one of confidence, bold statements and, most of all, unrivalled vibrancy.

As Sokari Higgwe a former financial analyst now full-time photographer—pictured in his navy suit (above) and in action with his camera (below)—describes: “There’s nowhere else like it in London. In fact, in the world, if you ask me—it’s such a unique island, and the concept of the creative community; I was sold.” A self-taught photographer who is instrumental in running the on-site gallery, Sokari finds inspiration in his surrounds, like the vibrant carnation-red and cobalt-blue City Island buildings, the texture of the bricks, a winsome flock of birds at the nearby ecological park. Inspiration is aplenty at City Island. Deborah Caleb Raffaele and her husband Steve Kalinda—both photographed above—moved out to City Island with no preconceptions. MAX TO THE
WHITE WALLS BE GONE: THIS SEASON’S HOTTEST INTERIOR DESIGN TREND – MAXIMALISM – IS BIGGER AND BOLDER THAN EVER
WORDS JULIA ZALTZMAN

“Maximalism is not necessarily about overcrowding a space but choosing to be bold by showcasing your own unique style in a creative way”
L
ong have we savoured the minimalist austerity of Scandinavian chic interior design. Set within the confines of a clutter-free zone, we have stripped back and toned down within an inch of our lives. With the arrival of the London Design Festival in September, however, comes the dawning of a bold new era, in which colour, patterns and eye-popping palettes abound. Brace yourself for the AW18 trend of maximalism. One of 2018's biggest interior design movements, maximalism is all about bold prints, vivid hues and deluxe decorations. Think opulent glamour emphasised by lavish gold wallpaper and shapely, super-luxe accessories. Silhouette and botanical motifs are taking over from rigorous, simple lines and muted tones. A profusion of colour and luxury, brimming with excess, is having a loud and exciting renaissance. “Social media has not only given us hungry eyes and encouraged us to become hoarders of aspirational imagery, it’s given us a window into the lives of designers, artists and craftspeople whose work cuts through the digital haze and inspires us to exercise our own creativity,” says Suzanne Carpenter, co-founder of Patternistas (patternistas.co.uk), winner of the Mixology 18 Surface of the Year Award for its collaboration with Lancashire-based textile designer Panaz. “We’ve become confident curators of a stream of exciting imagery and now we want spaces that have warmth and personality. A global view of rich patterned cultures has proven that layers of pattern and colour can be uplifting. The offshot of this is that we’re all getting braver and bolder in our own homes.” The team at Patternistas is not alone in its belief that our 62

A smaller space can also come into its own with the use of show-stopping finishing touches interiors should be drenched in colour. The affordability of digital print has given designers enormous freedom and enabled them to create short run, custom patterns and interior products. Patterned accessories, such as rugs and cushions, can soften or invigorate spaces depending on whether you choose complementary or contrasting colours and patterns. John Lewis’s (johnlewis.com) AW18 collections also respond to the rising trend. Vibrant velvet upholstery, striking geometric floor coverings and opulent metallic accents mark out the brand’s range as sheer maximalist heaven. “Maximalism is not necessarily about overcrowding a space, but simply choosing to be bold by showcasing your own unique style in a creative way,” says Fionnuala Johnson, senior designer at John Lewis. “Carefully considered mixing and matching of colours, prints and textures is key to achieving the look, and it’s the perfect opportunity to layer designs and blend references.” Maximalism can be tricky to recreate at home, however, particularly in a confined space or small
INTERIORS
apartment. Characterised by a courageous clashing of colours and pattern, walls, floors and furniture should start out plain, and then be dressed up to achieve the style. Black, white and silver or chrome furniture will work as a sound base, while rich and bright tones can be applied to accent pieces, rugs and accessories. Monochromatic wallpapers with bold contrasting prints are highly effective for creating a brave, overstated look. Think wild wallpaper from Cole & Son (cole-and-son.com), tongue-in-cheek design like Kitsch Kitchen’s (kitschkitchen.nl) colourful lampshades, and eclectic, borderline bizarre objects such as Artemest’s (artemest.com) sunshine yellow fish sculpture. Typified by its richness, its abundance of embellishment and its excess of decoration, maximalism is often punctuated with bright colours, enhanced with a sense of luxury and usually includes plenty of sensual elements. A smaller space, be it a room or an entire studio apartment, can also come into its own with the use of show-stopping finishing touches that really make the maximalist interior style pop. Opt for highly decorative baroque frames for pictures and mirrors to adorn your walls. Flowers feature heavily in maximalist designs too; floral embellishments for furnishings or bunches of brightly coloured flowers in large vases give a room instant ‘wow’ factor.

WALL TO PIERRE FREY Pierre Frey’s Galerie collection is made of panoramic scenes that can be joined together infinitely
For an easier route down the road to maximalism, look to wallpaper designers for eclectic prints that will transform your room from boring to bold in seconds. Maison Pierre Frey’s (pierrefrey.com) collection for Focus/18 – the dedicated design week at Chelsea Harbour’s Design Centre, which runs in tandem with the London Design Festival – includes two key wallpaper collections that embrace maximalism. The Double-Jeux collection comprises embossed vinyl backgrounds featuring evocative worked reliefs. It flirts with trompe l'oeil and illusion, from marble to wood, by way of handmade silk or linen canvas, while sophisticated finishes—matte, pearl or satin—give shadow to this collection. Meanwhile, Pierre Frey’s Galerie collection is made of panoramic scenes that can be joined together, and which are varied, bold and limitless; the sources of inspiration are eclectic, poetic and elegant. The exceptional size of these handmade designs echo ancient frescoes and landscapes painted on walls, transforming a wall into a window that opens onto an imaginary, dreamlike existence.

WALLPAPER COLE & SON Inspired by the captivating English landscape, Cole & Son’s collection explores the innate beauty of flora
Cole & Son’s selection of printed wallpapers is equally decadent. Take its latest collaborative collection with Fornasetti: combining the artist’s signature whimsical designs with Cole & Son’s brightest prints, the range is a vivid homage to all things maximalist. The brand’s new core collection, Botanical Botanica, is just as vibrant. Inspired by the captivating English landscape, it explores the innate beauty of flora and foliage, as well as the elegance and interest created by their composition. Each one of the new designs is inspired by a garden, and features a floral tribute to England. Look out for lilacs, wisteria, sweet peas, bluebells, roses and maidenhair ferns. “We took our cues from Mother Nature when choosing colour palettes,” comments the brand’s design team, “with seasonal tones such as the delicate pastel promise of early spring and dazzling vibrancy of summer hues, through to the autumnal tones of turning leaves and crisp, cool colours of frosted winter. This is our ode to beautiful, British botanicals.” And, indeed, to maximalism.

ibram is the world leader in the production of high performance rubber outsoles for the sport, leisure, work footwear, orthopaedic and repair markets. The history of Vibram dates back to 1937, when Vitale Bramani returned from an alpine climb, during which his group were caught in a terrible snow storm and six members died. Inspired by their untimely deaths, Bramani had the idea of developing rubber climbing boot soles. As a result, the first vulcanized rubber sole and the Carrarmato design was born. In 2015, Vibram introduced its new creative concept: Sole Factor. Rather than just having your shoes and boots repaired, Sole Factor gives customers the option to completely customise and enhance their footwear, providing more grip, lighter weight, more volume or simply a new look with colour and innovative design. With winter approaching, the Sole Factor truck team at Canary Wharf will be on hand to offer their expertise. Bring along your worn hiking boots or trail running shoes and have them fitted with the latest sole designs made from Megagrip rubber, specially designed for grip and traction. For the mountaineers amongst you, Vibram’s new Arctic Grip rubber technology is ideal; it enables the wearer to gain improved traction and balance while

Finally, if you’re simply concerned about ruining your shoes in London’s wet weather, see how you can improve your footwear by fitting soles and heels made with Vibram’s new XS City rubber compound, which is formulated to give excellent grip in wet conditions. James Shoe Care is working in partnership on this fantastic event and, as a special promotion while the truck is in situ, they are offering an exclusive discounted standard fee of only £25 for all Sole Factor jobs, saving customers between 50 and 70 percent off for this service.

URBAN JUNGLES A CITY BREAK IN SYDNEY – WITH A STOPOVER IN SINGAPORE – MAKES FOR THE ULTIMATE URBAN ESCAPE, WITH BUSTLE, BEACHES AND BARS IN ABUNDANCE WORDS JOANN KHATIB
SINGAPORE
SYDNEY
I
have always been a self-proclaimed city girl. I love the buzz, the hustle and bustle, the diversity and the anonymity that comes with it. A born and bred Londoner, I was always sure that a good city needed to be crowded with people, and fast-paced at all times. However, from the moment I stepped foot in laid-back, blasé Sydney, I knew it would be a game changer. Not only does it feel like everyone is happier because, well, the weather is simply glorious, but its ‘anything goes’ attitude pulls a weight off your shoulders almost immediately. And while the stereotypical blonde, wavy-haired surfer type was certainly easy to come across, I was pleasantly surprised by the sheer diverse nature of the city’s residents, all of whom seem to possess a friendly nature and calming aura – two traits that are somewhat baffling to a Londoner. The city is brimming with things to do, whether it’s walks around the centre to discover its rich history, plucking up the courage to climb over the Sydney Harbour Bridge, visiting the wildlife centre to get up close and personal with a kangaroo or koala, or simply sunbathing on one of the many sandy beaches. You certainly won’t be stuck for entertainment. When it comes to picking a place to stay, Sofitel Sydney Darling Harbour is unparalleled if you’re after extraordinary views. Smack bang in the middle of the harbour, it was built with unobstructed vistas in mind. The hotel – which was built from scratch and is the first new-build, five-star hotel to arrive in Sydney since the city held the Olympics in 2000 – boasts an impressive 35 floors and 590 rooms. It is currently Darling Harbour’s tallest building. One thing that is evident from the moment you walk in, is that you will be looked after here. You are treated like a VIP from the get go; from a simple smile and hello from the staff as you walk by, to the smooth sailing check in. It’s made quite clear that nothing you ask is too much. And the rooms are simply gorgeous; the interiors are contemporary, boasting an understated colour scheme, huge heavenly bed complete with pillow menu, a MyBed™ mattress and designer toiletries. If you really want to get the best out of the hotel, treat yourself and book a Club Millésime Luxury corner room, which gives you access to an exclusive lounge – where complimentary breakfast and afternoon tea is served – and dedicated butler service. With floor-to-ceiling glass windows covering the entire bathroom and majority of the room, it truly provides an unbeatable view across Sydney – it is genuinely one of the best I have ever seen. After a full day of exploring, I can guarantee that nothing will stop you from filling up the

fabulous bath tub and soaking (excuse the pun) up the views of the city at night. Guests also benefit from a champagne bar, two restaurants boasting even more incredible views of the city and an infinity pool on the fourth floor with its very own bar. It was admittedly a challenge enticing myself away from this lavish setting, but the lure of Sydney’s sights – along with a refreshing boat ride to see the Opera House and Harbour Bridge – was too much to resist. Not be missed is Bondi Beach, the one stop that all tourists make on their trip – and with good reason. It’s exactly how I pictured it: soft white sand, bright blue waters and a range of colourful fish to swim with. Early mornings are definitely the best time to go to beat the hordes of tourists that will inevitably join you. If you’re up for a challenge, trek the famous Bondi to Coogee coastal walk and enjoy a 12km round trip of stunning sea, gorgeous beaches, private coves and ancient aboriginal rock art. Or alternatively, book yourself on a day trip to Manly, which is just a short ferry ride away. The beaches and bars there are postcard perfect. Don’t leave the city without planning a trip to the Blue Mountains, where there is a magnificent one million hectares to be captivated by. Think tall forests, gaping canyons, glittering waterfalls and sandstone cliffs. Stop at Scenic World and ride the Scenic Skyway gondola across Jamison Valley, taking in views of the Three Sisters, Mount Solitary and Katoomba Falls, and marvel at the world’s natural beauty. No city break is complete without a medley of standout meals, and in Sydney you will find a happy mix of Michelin-starred eateries and kooky restaurants located off-the-beaten-track. For something truly spectacular, make a reservation at chef Michael Moore’s O Bar and Dining in the middle of Sydney’s central business district. The circular space is found high up on the 47th floor and is constantly revolving to reveal an ever-changing, 360-degree panorama. After-dinner drinks can be found at the charming Palmer & Co, a 1920s-themed cocktail bar in a vaulted basement, with live music, an active dance floor, delicious cocktails and staff dressed the part. The Baxter Inn is an equally good choice. Known for its exceptional range of whiskies – and an entire wall dedicated to spirits – you’re guaranteed to find what you’re after. Or, if you fancy Australia’s answer to a pub, complete with beer garden, venture over to The Dolphin Hotel for some drinks and a charming outdoor seating area – the ultimate spot for sundowners. Sydney is unapologetically glamorous; there is always a new restaurant to try or a new bar to discover, an eccentric party to attend or a festival you need to be at. You can dress up or dress down, go hard or go home. It’s an everoptimistic hub where you can truly let loose and let your worries fall away. Simply put, it’s the place to be, and I can certainly understand why I’ve lost so many friends to this sensational city. 83
SINGAPORE On your way home from Sydney, consider making a stopover in Singapore. With so much culture to absorb, give yourself a few days to really take it all in. It is a city obsessed with food, so if you’re there for a short while, I would advise totally indulging and embracing as much of the traditional cuisine as you can. The Hawker centres (indoor food halls) that Singapore is so well known for undoubtedly live up to expectation. Bustling with people – during lunch hour you will find most workers here – you can eat pretty much anything your taste buds desire, from traditional Singaporean dishes to Indian, Chinese and European food, all for the fraction of the price you would find in a restaurant. It’s so cheap, in fact, that 92 per cent of people in the city don’t even bother cooking at home. While there, make your way through the different districts; visit stunning mosques and breathtaking temples, explore Little India and Chinatown, and get a glimpse of the beautiful Marina Bay and lively central business district. Each area has its own distinct character and taking the time to visit them really shows the utter variety the city has to offer. While staying in the city, book yourself a room at Sofitel Singapore City Centre. Not only is it in the perfect location to discover the sights, but the new hotel provides chic, comfortable rooms, an incredible rooftop pool, access to a high-tech Virgin Active Gym and a range of restaurants to choose from. If you have more time, revel in a completely different side to Singapore and visit Sentosa Island. It’s the weekend getaway all Singaporeans go on and, unlike the city centre, it’s all about beach clubs, swimming pools and well-deserved spa time. Sofitel Singapore Sentosa Island Resort & Spa is the best of the best, with out-of-this-world massages and mouth-watering dishes at the hotel’s French restaurant. TUCKED AWAY IN THE BRITISH VIRGIN ISLANDS IS OIL NUT BAY, ONE OF THE REGION’S BEST-KEPT SECRETS. BACK ON ITS FEET AFTER LAST YEAR’S HURRICANE IRMA WREAKED HAVOC THROUGH THE ISLANDS, THE HOTEL IS READY TO BE DISCOVERED WORDS ANGELINA VILLA-CLARKE

he first thing that strikes you is the breadth of colour: cobalt, teal and turquoise swirl around like someone’s dropped a huge pipette of blue inks in the ocean. Meanwhile, above you, the cornflower-blue sky is studded with cotton-wool clouds to create a seamless sensation of endlessness. Welcome to the British Virgin Islands. A famous destination for sailing holidays, the cluster of islands in the Caribbean, close to Anguilla, is, of course, all about the water – from its famous Baths (a collection of massive granite boulders off the southwestern tip of Virgin Gorda) to its spectacular diving and snorkelling (healthy coral reefs, underwater caves and shipwrecks mean you will swim with a host of sealife, such as turtles, devil rays and barracuda), this is a veritable playground for water babies. Looking around the pristine scene, it’s hard to
LU X U R Y L ON D ON .C O.U K
imagine the devastation caused a year ago by Hurricane Irma – the most powerful Atlantic hurricane ever recorded. Many of the islands were destroyed with the storm running a straight course through the island chain. Playing its part in the area’s recovery was Oil Nut Bay – one of the destination’s most recent developments and, arguably, the most interesting. Found on the north-eastern tip of Virgin Gorda (one of the four largest islands out of the 60 that make up the BVIs), the only way to check in is by boat or by helicopter. The sprawling resort is spread across acres, and consists of a collection of uber-luxury villas and suites, available to buy or rent, all with sweeping views across the Caribbean Sea. One of the first resorts in the BVIs to reopen to guests, despite being hit by the 200 mile-per-hour winds, it has since set up the North Sound Foundation
87
to support the local community. In addition to ongoing cleanup, supplies and long-term planning with the government and community, the Foundation and Oil Nut Bay have adopted the Robinson O’Neal Elementary School in the North Sound and will be spearheading the rebuilding of the school, which was heavily damaged during Irma. It’s no coincidence that the idea of Oil Nut Bay was conceived by the world’s leading expert in waterside developments – American developer David V. Johnson, veteran of 42 high-end projects, but most famous for the landmark $1 billion Bay Harbor development on the shores of Lake Michigan. After travelling the world for 10 years looking for the site of his next project – and the place he wanted to call his ‘forever home’ – he finally settled on the British Virgin Islands. “It’s the only place in the world that fulfilled my ‘location criteria’,” he says. “It has physical beauty, a stable government, no corruption and is extremely safe. “Following Irma, our immediate goals were to make sure our team members have a job to come to every day, to support the relief efforts of Virgin Gorda and to build the public’s confidence in the future of the British Virgin Islands,” he continues. “Oil Nut Bay and the BVI is back, and it will be better than before.” Attracting the world’s glitterati – think CEOs and leaders from the fashion, music and business industries – Oil Nut Bay is still in its infancy and due to its unique architecture – sculpted with the diverse topography of Virgin Gorda and with nature’s forces in mind – damage was, luckily, fairly limited. Currently offering 17 villas – tucked away in the hills, beaches and ridges of the estate – it will eventually expand to around 67 properties in the next 10 years. Architectural excellence, sustainability and social responsibility are key concerns for Johnson – as they are, he says, for the people who will buy here. Ticking the first box is the fact that each villa is built with leading architects in conjunction with the owners. While each is wonderfully unique, they all implement an abundance of natural materials – carved wood features, rock walls and stone surfaces – and have an emphasis on light-filled rooms to showcase the ocean views. Al fresco details (such as 88
outdoor tubs, Jacuzzis and lounges) are also key, not to mention the luxury finishes and attention to detail throughout. The eco box, meanwhile, is ticked by the resort’s Environmental Excellence policy – there is lowdensity planning and 50 per cent of the land has been designated as open space, with nature trails and land preserves. Solar power-generated electricity is used for air conditioning, refrigeration, hot water and community lighting and there is also extensive water management at play. What’s more, many properties have green roofing technology so that from the ocean much of the resort appears hidden as it blends in with its natural surroundings. One of the stand-out villas that holidaymakers can rent is Water’s Edge, perched high on the ridge on the north side of the resort. Contemporary décor is sleek and modern. Rough-hewn granite walls line the al fresco lobby area, while the focus is firmly put on the dramatic infinity pool, which seems to merge with the aquamarine sea beyond. It’s Instagram heaven. Inside, décor is contemporary and pared back – with no sign of the usual Caribbean chintz. There is an elegant living room and kitchen with state-of-the-art amenities and the master bedroom comes complete with an open-air shower and soaking tub.
T R AV E L
The newest villa, meanwhile, is the impressive Poseidon’s Perch. Push open the huge carved door with its motif of the Greek god of the sea and inside you’ll find a paean to open-air living. Carved into a ridge, the villa is spread across a series of pavilions on different levels, so each area feels private and secluded. Inside, vaulted ceilings and natural stone features give a tactile feel. Luxury touches such as vast beds, walk-in wardrobes and thick rugs give a nod to the top-tier travellers who will be checking in. As well as villa accommodation, there are also three Cliff Suites available, complete with their own pools. The standout is the Cliff Penthouse with glamorous interiors designed by Fendi Casa – expect black croc lined bathrooms, white leather furniture and Murano glass chandeliers. It’s like Milan-on-sea. At the heart of Oil Nut Bay is the Beach Club, where guests can dine in the al fresco restaurant. Be warned: you’ll have a hard time choosing between the Caribbean-Euro fusion dishes that chef Leonard Sorce has artfully conjured up. From the appetisers of Mahi-Mahi tacos and coconut red curry calamari to the mains of red snapper with wild mushroom ravioli and roasted jerk fillet with rainbow Swiss chard… it’s the sort of menu you can order from time and time again and still be inspired. Mornings are kicked off with American-Caribbean style breakfasts – think breakfast roti, blue cornmeal buckwheat pancakes or frittata with lobster. While, for lunch there’s an al forno pizza oven and a casual menu for informal dining. Luckily – as well as the three pools and cabanas – there’s also a plethora of water sports to keep waistlines in check. While Oil Nut Bay’s USP is all about offering privacy and seclusion – there’s still a real focus on providing an innovative range of
LU X U R Y L ON D ON .C O.U K
activities and sports – with paddle boarding, sailing and kayaking being just a few available. As well as tennis, volleyball and yoga there are also pickle-ball courts (said to be one of the fastest growing sports in the US), and hiking trails to make the most of the great outdoors. A must is an early morning hike to Pajaros Point. There are a variety of trails – according to ability – which will take you through the rugged landscape – covered with its strange Turks Head cactuses and fragrant frangipani flowers – and bringing you to the highest and most north-easterly point of Virgin Gorda with its scenic views to the islands beyond. For younger guests, the Nut House Kids Club and Nature Centre focuses on educational activities and there’s a changing daily calendar to cater for all the family. “It’s all about a multigenerational appeal,” says Johnson. The next project on the horizon is a community organic garden to supply the restaurant kitchen but where guests can also visit and purchase produce. A social conscience is clearly important to Johnson who, after discovering that 90 per cent of local children can’t swim, has set about to provide swimming lessons in a nearby school. “I want to make a difference in the BVI,” he says. “Living here is all about community and neighbourhood. That’s the attraction for us all.” Carrier (0161 492 1354, carrier.co.uk) offers seven nights at Oil Nut Bay, British Virgin Islands from £2,899 per person, based on two adults sharing a one bedroom cliff suite on a room only basis, including return flights from London Gatwick with British Airways and return private transfers. Offer valid 26 November – 18 December 2018. Based on departures 01 December 2018.

ttempting to achieve serenity when there’s a smorgasbord of sights in one of Europe’s most historically-steeped cities on your doorstep may sound like a near impossible venture – the 15-acre Rome Cavalieri hotel estate, however, lets you achieve both in abundance. Just a half hour transfer from the airport, nestled on the highest hill in the city and offering panoramic views of the capital, this incredible spot can prove hard to leave once you’ve checked in. Rooms are generously sized, and the higher you can get, the better the view. Our Imperial Room is located at the top and comes with a VIP service, an extensive bar terrace and both blackout blinds and sound-proof doors – after a day in this busy city, these comforts are more than welcome. But first, to see the sights. The hotel, which opened in 1963, is able to offer some exciting excursions, from sandal-making classes to private Vespa tours, which take you to both off-thebeaten-track spots and more popular ones with ease. There is an after-hours Sistine Chapel tour which, if not already on your bucket list, should be added immediately. A trip to the Roman Forum is also an absolute must, but be sure to do yours with a private tour guide in tow; the Cavalieri concierge knows the very best. Avoid the throngs of tourists – well, walk around them at least – and take in the deep history of the jaw-dropping architecture from two millennia past. Back at the Rome Cavalieri, the sightseeing continues. Your first glance around the opulent entrance will afford you a taste of the more than 1,000 pieces of exquisite artwork that can be found here. From French period furniture, gigantic tapestries and elegant paintings, the art collection includes pieces by 17th- and 18th-century artists,

contemporary work by Andy Warhol, Napoleonic clocks, marble statues and the bejewelled ballet costumes of Russian dancer Rudolf Nureyev. On the hotel’s roof terrace, Rome’s only three Michelin-starred restaurant caters to a different kind of palete. Chef Heinz Beck has been cooking up a storm since 1994, when he gifted the restaurant his Mediterranean-style of cuisine. Be sure to book in advance to get a table – this is an experience you won’t forget. Downstairs, at the more accessible L’Uliveto Restaurant, the food is created using fresh local ingredients and cooked with elegance and sophistication. By night, it’s totally romantic. By day, it makes for the perfect place to tuck into a Sunday brunch – creamy mozzarella, paper-thin sheets of beef carpaccio and bowls of tangy sundried tomatoes – or to hang out by the resident pool, the biggest outdoor lido in Rome. With such luxuries at their fingertips, it is amazing guests at the Rome Cavalieri can bear to leave. Indeed, when my trip eventually comes to an end, I wish I was staying for longer – not just for the comforts of the hotel, but for the cultural spoils that Rome offers in droves, of which I feel I have just scratched the surface. It’s certainly a city you have to visit twice – minimum – and it is safe to say that I will definitely be going back.

POLISH PERFECTION AMONGST THE CLOUDS DURING POLAND’S 100TH YEAR OF INDEPENDENCE, ITS CAPITAL CITY WARSAW MAKES FOR A CHARMING CITY BREAK WORDS TAMARA HINSON
I
t’s hard to miss the Warsaw Marriott – a shiny black sliver of glass towering over Warsaw’s main train station. When it opened its doors in 1989, it became the city’s first five-star hotel, occupying the upper floors of a building which was the first skyscraper in Poland’s capital. Amazingly, construction began in 1977, when Poland was still a socialist country. The tower represented a new era of prosperity, and quickly became the hotel of choice for world leaders visiting the city – George W. Bush was one of the earliest guests. Today, the recently-refurbished property, topped with Poland’s highest bar, is still regarded as Warsaw’s most luxurious hotel. It’s the ideal place to toast the country’s 100th anniversary of independence, which takes place this year – a year which will also see the (albeit significantly delayed) opening of another luxury hotel, Raffles Europejski Warsaw. The Warsaw Marriott is certainly a great place from which to admire the building’s rivals, which include the breathtakingly ornate Palace of Culture and Science (built in 1955 with the help of thousands of Soviet workmen, sent as a “gift” by Stalin) and the Warsaw Spire, a tapered tower featuring a 71-metrewide LED screen. The Warsaw Marriott is also ideally located 94
just a short walk from some of the city’s biggest attractions, including the beautiful old town (reconstructed from scratch following WWII) and the Piłsudski Square, with its military memorials and statue of Józef Piłsudski, who helped secure the country’s independence 100 years ago. Perhaps it’s down to the hotel’s numerous firsts, but this is certainly a Marriott with more; the spacious, light-filled ground floor lobby even has its own trademark scent, and it turns out eau d’Marriott – to my untrained nose, a heady mix of fruity and floral – smells rather wonderful. And then there’s the marble – vast expanses of the stuff. The check-in desks are adorned with huge stone slabs, and thick marble columns stretch from the floor to the uppermost reaches of the two-storey lobby. Warsaw’s famous for its communist architecture and the hotel’s designers have paid homage to this style by incorporating key elements while still creating a modern, light-filled space. The slabs of marble are backlit with neon, and Condé Nast-worthy armchairs dot the lobby, the second level of which is home to the M Lounge, accessible only to guests who splash out on one of the (surprisingly reasonably-priced) suites. Do so and you’ll find one of the Marriott brand’s largest business lounges.
T R AV E L
The hotel’s rooms occupy the upper floors, so you’re guaranteed a fantastic view Head here for breakfast, lunch and dinner, along with delicious afternoon teas (the chocolate brownies are to die for) and canapés in the early evening. Plus a lot of alcohol: champagne, beer and everything in between, along with a huge selection of soft drinks, coffees and teas. The hotel’s rooms (there are 523, including 95 suites) occupy the upper floors, so you’re guaranteed a fantastic view, whether it’s towards the park-filled city centre or the urban beach-lined Vistula River. There are huge windows in all the bedrooms and, for a lucky few, in the bathrooms too. The most sought-after rooms are the ones with the bathtubs positioned against the windows (don’t worry – tinted glass mean’s the view’s only one-way). Higher still is the 40th-floor Panorama Sky Bar, a two-storey venue where floor-to-ceiling glass windows provide stunning views over the city. This is where Warsaw’s beautiful people come to party, although the prices are still pretty reasonable – cocktails start at around £7. And they’re pretty special too; colourful, potent creations garnished with everything from candy floss to rose petals. My favourite? The candy floss and chocolate-adorned Candy Sky – a delicious mix of hazelnut liquor, vermouth and cocoa-infused whisky. When it comes to soaking up all that alcohol, I recommend Parmizzano’s, the hotel’s Italian restaurant. As a firm believer that a city’s best food can rarely be found inside a chain hotel, I’m pleasantly surprised by the authenticity of the restaurant, where enormous hams dangle from the ceiling and the cheese for the restaurant’s famous linguine is grated straight off a wagon wheel-sized chunk of mozzarella. Perhaps unsurprisingly, given the hotel’s love of firsts, it’s the first Italian restaurant in the capital, and all of the produce is imported from Italy. It’s admittedly one of Warsaw’s more expensive hotel restaurants, but there are cheaper options too, including the hotel’s Champions Sports Bar & Restaurant, which has a publike vibe and more televisions than you can shake a stick at (37, in total, in addition to two huge projector screens). The most popular area is the seating inside the replica boxing ring. It’s kitsch but somehow cool. For some pampering, head to the hotel’s subterranean Holmes Place Spa, where there’s a pool, five treatment rooms and a gym. My advice? Hop on one of the city’s Veturilo bikes instead. The capital’s bike share scheme has been a resounding success, and there’s a bike station just outside the hotel. And don’t panic if you forget your map - when you’re staying in one of the city’s tallest buildings, getting lost is nigh on impossible. LU X U R Y L ON D ON .C O.U K

EXHIBITIONS Lobby, One Canada Square Free, open daily Where are we now? Sculpture by Michael Pennie and Andrew Sabin 28 August – 19 October Where are we now? This question comes up time and again in assessing where we are in life, work and the world. In bringing Michael Pennie and Andrew Sabin together in an exhibition of their sculpture we see two ways of considering this question; Pennie has chosen to show a selection of works created over the past forty-six years, while Sabin decided to make entirely new pieces, in an energetic frenzy of creative activity. Not knowing that they had been former colleagues and held each other’s work in high regard, the decision to curate the exhibition was based on an intangible feeling that their sculpture would set up a curious and informative dialogue. Michael Pennie’s work had not been seen in a tough corporate environment before and the sheer scale of Andrew Sabin’s new and colourful sculptures would meet the lofty heights of the Lobby of One Canada Square. Exhibition Tour Tuesday 2 October, 6.30 – 7.15pm Ann Elliott tours the exhibition with Michael Pennie and Andrew Sabin. Free but please contact Canary Wharf Public Art Office to reserve a place: publicart@canarywharf.com.

BRIDGE ON WATER STREET Water Street bridge, which connects the original Canary Wharf estate to its new district, Wood Wharf, has now officially been installed, marking a prominent milestone in the site’s development. The bridge, which experienced a 36-hour voyage across the North Sea from its fabrication site in Belgium, has now been successfully fixed at its permanent home in Canary Wharf. London’s latest moveable bridge, the 28-metre single-leaf bascule bridge crosses the southern end of Bellmouth Passage to the west side of the new district, near Canary Wharf’s landmark residential building, One Park Drive. Once open for use, it will provide a road and pedestrian link between Montgomery Square and this vibrant new community. Wood Wharf, which has been master-planned by Allies and Morrison Architects, is a new neighbourhood with up to 3,600 homes, 380,000 sq.ft. of retail space, eight acres of public spaces, plazas and parks. Amongst this will sit lively high streets, boutique shopping arcades, a vast collection of public art, doctor’s surgery and a two-form primary school for 420 children. At the heart of the district and close to the Water Street bridge is One Park Drive, the striking new residential building designed by Herzog & de Meuron. Offering the best in city and riverside living, each of the 483 apartments will enjoy stunning views of the surrounding docklands and wider London, as well as private balconies, 24-hour hotel style concierge services and dedicated residents’ amenities. Situated alongside One Park Drive is 10 Park Drive, the first residential building to be constructed on the Canary Wharf estate. Designed by the internationally renowned Stanton Williams Architects, the building will offer 345 homes when it completes in the final quarter of 2019. The development sits adjacent to South Dock and is linked to the water by exquisitely landscaped gardens and parks.
OLD FLO EDUCATION PROGRAMME This month, Canary Wharf Group launches its KS2 Education Programme focused on Henry Moore’s 'Draped Seated Woman, affectionately known as ‘Old Flo’. The education programme aims to raise awareness of the sculpture to younger generations, who may not even have been born when Draped Seated Woman left the borough in 1997. The 20 page book details what inspired Moore to create ’Old Flo’, how she was made, locals’ memories of her, and her journey to and from Yorkshire. Alongside this will be lesson plans linked to the national curriculum embedded in art, English, and drama with cross-curricular links to other subjects. The book and lesson plans have been prepared in consultation with local schools and will be made available to students when their classes
visit Canary Wharf to see ’Old Flo’. The education programme is part of Canary Wharf Group’s on-going commitment to maintain awareness to residents in Tower Hamlets and the wider community of the free public art available at the Canary Wharf estate. In May this year, Canary Wharf Group launched a Children’s Art Trail with Draped Seated Woman at the centre which can be picked up at the Idea Store, Canary Wharf or downloaded from www.canarywharf.com. Draped Seated Woman is on loan from Tower Hamlets Council and on display in Cabot Square, Canary Wharf until 2022. To receive updates and become a ‘Friend of Old Flo’ please email oldflo@ canarywharf.com.
OPEN HOUSE LONDON 2018 Following 2017’s record breaking 26th edition of Open House London, the festival will return this month with all London boroughs participating. A truly citywide celebration of London’s buildings, places and spaces, the event gives a unique opportunity to explore and learn about the city’s most compelling architecture and design over one weekend. More than 800 buildings of all kinds will open their doors on 22 &23 September, alongside a programme of neighbourhood walks and architect-led tours – all for free.
This year’s programme explores how the new London that has been emerging over the past 20 years is coming to fruition. New buildings, new kinds of
buildings, new districts, new approaches to regeneration, women taking a leading role in making London, engineering excellence underpinning the capital’s successful reinvention – these all show how good design can make London a more enjoyable and vibrant city in which to live and work. For the seventh year, Canary Wharf Group opens up for Open House London. Workers, visitors and enthusiasts will gain rare insight into the past, present and future of one of the world’s premier business and shopping districts. NEW KID ON THE BLOCK Slovakian developer rolls into London with £400m prime resi play on the South Bank Slovakian-based property developer J&T Real Estate has made its first foray into the London development arena, snapping up a significant prime residential scheme next to Tate Modern from Delancey’s client fund Dv4. This deal marks another high-profile disposal by Jamie Ritblat’s Delancey, following the Lodha family’s reported acquisition of The Kensington a week earlier. J&T operates primarily across Central Eastern Europe, with offices in Bratislava, Moscow and Prague; the firm has completed more than 50 developments in Europe, with an estimated total GDV of more than €1bn. The firm’s first site in London, 185 Park Street, is impressive. A former home to the National Grid, it sits at the eastern end of Tate Modern on the South Bank. Planning is already in place (granted in July 2015) for 163 apartments alongside 87,000 sq ft of office space, 9,900 of retail, and a 16,600 sq ft “cultural facility”; all-in, J&T estimates the scheme to have a GDV of around £400m.
FINAL COUNTDOWN
Plans go in for Chelsea Barracks’ final phase Plans for the final phase of one of London’s most-anticipated new property developments have gone in to Westminster Council for approval. Designed by architects Piercy & Company and Squire & Partners “to reflect the traditional Belgravia streetscape”, Phase 6B is the “final chapter” of Qatari Diar’s 12.8-acre Chelsea Barracks scheme. It aims to deliver “a hub for the local community” alongside affordable and care housing. Proposals comprise 126 extra-care and affordable housing units, a public sports centre, four retail units and a new self-contained NHS medical centre. These community amenities will be linked to the rest of the development by a network of pedestrian walkways. The last phase is located along Ebury Bridge Road – opposite the Ebury Bridge Estate, which Westminster Council recently agreed to demolish and rebuild with 750 homes. 122
MONEY MATTERS
Property price growth likely to stay negative PwC is predicting muted property price inflation across the UK in the coming year, with continued falls in London. Annual UK house price growth is projected to slow to around three per cent this year (2018), remaining at this level until 2025. The average UK house price is estimated to rise from £221,000 in 2017 to around £285,000 by 2025. LU X U R Y L ON D ON .C O.U K
