Design by light Lighting design is changing and becoming more daring. The arrival of good quality small LEDs has created new opportunities allowing the lighting designer and home owner alike to introduce lighting in new ways throughout the house and garden.

ighting is hard to visualise so for many people it is still the forgotten element of interior design. The best lighting design is discreet whilst bringing out the best in an interior or garden; bad lighting is glaring and shows everything to its worst effect. The main problem is that people consider lighting too late: only when they have almost finished the decoration of a room do they realise that the lights are not in the correct place, whether for reading or lighting a favourite painting or showing off the internal architecture of their room. Luke Thomas, Design Director of John Cullen Lighting says the key to a successful lighting scheme is to design it at the earliest stages, at the same time as doing plumbing. Before beginning you need to consider your furniture layout and pictures. I think people leave lighting to the end as they hope to put off the decisions of where things go until the last possible moment. It is also why as a lighting designer, I spend so much time doing furniture layouts for my clients!
