We’ve been designing kitchens at One Way for over four decades. Peer recognition has brought us a host of national design awards, along the way. Today our talent, skills and experience allow us to see and make the most of opportunities where others see barriers. We have established a reputation for living space design, which delivers surprise and inspiration plus ergonomy and comfort. As well as incredible kitchens, current major projects involve whole house refurbishments. Our holistic approach to design maximises available space and helps our clients to realise the full potential within every area of their home. We combine innovative man-made materials with natural stones and hardwoods, to achieve spectacular results that go way above expectations. By collaborating and linking with leading international design brands, we deliver more to discerning clients who demand nothing less. We are currently undertaking the complete refurbishment of our showroom building in Southport. Upon completion, the new kitchen studios will house sets from each of our three brands, Contemporary, Architecture and Hand Made. When fully finished our multi-level showrooms will feature every aspect of home design from sumptuous bathrooms and bedrooms to examples of our unique ranges of designer furniture, lighting, mirrors, accessories and more. Throughout our refurbishment we continue to be open and fully operational. Please check our website for opening times. Thanks to all our clients for their support during this period. ABODA Living was established by the husband and wife team of Mark and Lisa Oakes and their business partner Paul Barrow. They first met in 2006 when Mark and Lisa presented Paul’s construction company (Paragon Construction Group) with the task of building their dream family home. Firmly establishing both a professional and personal relationship during the process, they achieved their mutual goal of building a unique contemporary property. This was further endorsed by winning, amongst several others, a prestigious regional RIBA award for the house. The team was complete with the addition of Justin Risley who having worked with ABODA Living as lead architect on previous projects, joined the trio to provide exclusive in-house architect services. Designing and building your own home is a real privilege and we strive to exceed our clients’ vision whilst providing an enjoyable and creative environment. ABODA Living offer an end to end solution from plot identification through to handing over the keys to your new home. With our in-house architect and interior design services, unique main contractor partnership and our preferred partner network of professional service providers, we are able to realise your dream seamlessly with just one point of contact.

Signature Carpets has provided luxurious handcrafted and custom designed wool carpets for over 30 years. Signature’s designers are renowned for their expert use of style and colour. We offer clients any design style from the traditional to the contemporary. After an initial consultation with the customer and, in many cases with the client’s Interior Designer, Signature’s designers hand paint artwork showing the room to scale and how the carpet will look in its full glory. Once every detail is agreed; a custom made sample is approved for colour and the carpet design is considered perfect, Signature proceeds with manufacture. Signature’s carpets are made to any size and without any unsightly seams, created to fit any shape, from an awkward alcove to every curve of a sweeping, spiral staircase. Hand made elements of the carpets are made upright on vertical frames by Signature’s talented crafts people. The construction is 100% New Zealand wool custom dyed to the precise shades needed to make the design excel in itself and sit perfectly as a complement to the interior.
Wool has always been a natural first choice for carpets and the outstanding properties of New Zealand wool which is the purest, whitest wool in the world, enables it to be dyed to long-lasting, vibrant hues and clean, fresh pastels. It is soft, strong and durable, with a natural resistance to fire, dirt and crushing, so carpets made from it will be practical, safe and comfortable, with good looks that will last. The finished Signature product is created in dense velvet pile, sometimes with hand carved sculptured details and loop pile used to introduce variation in texture. For final peace of mind and to safe guard customers’ investment, Signature is involved from the beginning to end. The highest quality of installation is paramount and is carried out by Signature’s own specialist fitters. Nothing is left to chance. For more information or to arrange a visit by one of Signature’s designers please call 01422 845075.

Wallpaper... a Global Style At the beginning of the industrial era, there were just two contenders locked in a battle for world supremacy in the field of wallpaper production – France and Great Britain.
T
he dawn of the 20th Century saw production take off globally. France remained a front runner for elegance and chic, but British designers were the most adventurous. Then, in the period between the wars, the Germans also began to make their mark, enlisting the support of major contemporary artists, and today Germany is a leading producer, with the huge Russian market conveniently located on its doorstep. Although originally slower to embrace wallpaper than Europe, the US and Canada have long since made up for any lost ground. The Scandinavian countries were relatively quick off the mark and introduced some genuine design innovations. Italy, on the other hand, continued to prefer paint to paper for many years but it is now the home of the luxury brands. Spain, predictably enough, began

producing designs that would have looked at home in an Almódodovar film, while the Russians, rather than manufacturing wallpapers, have generally opted to buy them instead. Wallpaper it seems, is as varied as any other aspect of global culture. The British have been pioneers in wallpaper design since its earliest days. Queen Victoria is said to have taken a close interest in the choice of wallpaper for her various residences, insisting on identical colours and patterns – perhaps to ensure that she would feel at home in all of them. And British designers, traditionally regarded as the most innovative, have always had a talent for balancing quirkiness with tradition and a hint of wit. Sanderson is one of the most internationally renowned of British brands. The firm was founded in London in 1860 as

an importer of French wallpaper, but began to commission original designs in the late 1860s and built its own factory in 1879. Its papers were the work of designers including Christopher Dresser, George Haite and most notably C.F.A. Voysey, a magnificent Art Nouveau designer, decorative artist and architect, who also designed a new factory for the company in 1902. A pioneer of colour advertising from 1911 onwards, Sanderson was awarded a Royal Warrant as Purveyors of Wallpapers to King George V in 1923, and began to license motifs from the Disney Studios in the 1930’s. It also bought up other firms including Rottman, Strome & Co., Charles Knowles, Turnbull & Stockdale and – most significantly – Morris & Co. in 1940, thereby acquiring all of the printing blocks and pattern books belonging to the great William Morris,

philosopher, designer and father of the 19thcentury Arts and Crafts movement. The last member of the Sanderson family left the business in 1965 and it was bought by the Walker Greenbank group. The brand, which celebrated its 150th anniversary in 2010, has long been associated with upmarket elegance in a vivid and sophisticated colour palette, and has always remained faithful to the English country style. Graham & Brown was established in the aftermath of the Second World War by two friends, Harold Graham and Henry Brown, both of whom were passionate about new printing technology. Harold Graham died in 1951, but the company continued to expand with financial backing from the founder’s sons, and by the 1970s it was producing millions of rolls of wallpaper, becoming one of the top independent manufacturers in the UK. The third generation forged creative links with interior designer Laurence Llewelyn-Bowen, as well as Linda Barker, Marcel Wanders, Wayne Hemmingway, Basso & Brooke and more recently designer Kelly Hoppen and fashion icon Barbara Hulanicki. This dynamic company has even organized competitions in art schools as a means of 60

recruiting new design talent and has built close links with the fashion world by selling its products through retail chains such as Monsoon. Its website offers a host of different wallcoverings, including ‘wall jewels’ for a customized look, and an ‘eco’ range that is manufactured without the use of harmful chemicals and printed on paper from manufactured sources. Osborne & Little also grew up out of friendship, this time between two brothers-in-law, Peter Osborne and Antony Little, who started out with a small showroom in Chelsea in 1968 and went on to build the Osborne & Little empire thanks to their award-winning first collection of hand printed wallpapers. The firm has expanded its product range to include fabrics, trimmings, accessories and furniture, creating complete interiors in which everything complements everything else. For the last forty years, Osborne and Little creations have occupied a central place in the world of interior design, form the paint effects of the 1980s to the current metallic trends, via the sun, moon and star motifs of the 1990s. Osborne & Little have also began distributing designs by Nina Campbell and the Parisian design studio Lorca. What all of these wallpapers have in common is a fresh colour palette and what might be described as a poetic approach to pattern. Colefax and Fowler – the creation of John Fowler, Sibyl Colefax and Nancy Lancaster – were founded on London’s Fulham Road and for the last fifty years have embodied the essence of English style, that sense of timeless elegance that is so characteristic of modern British interiors and which blends comfort, a restrained palette and relaxed informality. Colfax and Fowler also market the work of other design talents, including Manuel Canovas and the highly original work of Jane Churchill, whose fresh and relaxed designs seem quintessentially British. “
The kitchen is the focal point of your home, combining style, uncomplicated detail and comfort. Appealing and practical in equal measure, Diane Berry Kitchens are designed to serve the user - not vice versa. Make yourself at home, and discover our many exciting features and solutions. Our kitchens fit around you and your lifestyle.
”
Diane Berry started her career in design back in 1980 and after working for several companies decided to open her own studio in 2002. She has built up an enviable reputation for efficient, personal service and a professional level of installation which includes design consultancy and project management for all aspects of the process. Her close knit, multi award winning team has a passion for creative design with professional service and offers a wealth of experience in kitchen ergonomics and design. CASE STUDY Deborah Moult wasn’t fond of her old kitchen; it was unworkable, and certainly unloved. A trip to the well-known Diane Berry Kitchens showroom meant Deborah and her partner, Danny could see and feel new ideas and styles as well as the best high end appliances and finishing touches too. They were delighted with the bespoke design, instantly realizing the potential. The couple crucially wanted more space, and space which was workable and practical to live in, they fancied a large fridge freezer too! All their requirements were taken into account and delivered. The Kitchen is easy to clean and maintain its ‘wow factor’ look, with finishing touches such as sockets built into the worktops and an oven which cleans itself. The room can easily accommodate the family, and is just ideal for hosting gatherings. The new kitchen is the exact opposite of their old space, workable, feminine and much loved. The feature curved bar also designed and installed by Diane Berry’s team is the perfect party space and fits with our busy social life, a real delight to be in serving our guests.

The First UK Retailer of New Eco Kitchen Range Announced Long established Leeds retailer, Four Seasons Interiors, will be the first kitchen showroom in the UK to offer Puustelli’s range of Eco Kitchens, the Miinus Range.
72
LUXURY HOMES & INTERIORS
The showroom will be offering the range to clients from January 2016 and owner and Design Director, Ian Sandford stated, “We’re delighted and proud to be the first nUK retailer of a groundbreaking kitchen range especially at a time when consumers are so conscious of the environment when making buying decisions”, he continued, “I’ve long held the belief that Retailers have a responsibility to meet the eco demand and by offering the Miinus range, this will allow us to realise that ambition with a kitchen range that ticks all the Eco boxes”. The Puustelli Miinus range is the result of a €1.5 million investment R&D programme to develop a material to replace the standard Melamine Faced Particle Boards that make up the majority of kitchen cabinets. The complete range, from carcasses to doors, has been developed entirely on ecological grounds and utilises a biocomposite carcass frame that results in almost halving the Carbon footprint of existing kitchen cabinetry.
Puustelli’s Miinus project manager, Tony Lonnqvist, who will oversee the development of a network of Miinus kitchen retailers in the UK and Ireland, stated “Puustelli are the largest and longest established kitchen brand in Finland and our goal is to build upon the success of Scandinavian design in the UK and Ireland with a network of reputable retailers offering our Miinus kitchen range to service and satisfy a growing market of responsible buyers seeking quality Eco products”. Puustelli’s Miiinus Kitchen Range will fall in the mid range price sector and they expect to grow the network of Miinus retailers to six showrooms in 2016. Kitchen Consultant and Miinus’s point of contact here in the UK, Tim Foley, said, “After 30 years as an installer and contractor, I never thought I’d witness a much needed evolution of kitchen cabinetry. It was through my earlier conversation with the scientist, Professor Juhani Salovaari, who worked with Puustelli to develop the Miinus range, that my enthusiasm was born. I am thrilled to now be driving it’s introduction into the UK and Irish market some 4 years later”. Contact: Ian Sandford Tel: 0113 2369070 Email: sales@4seasons-design.co.uk www.4seasons-design.co.uk
CEO of Puustelli, Jussi Aine, commented “I’m delighted to welcome Four Seasons Interiors, Ian and his Design and Installation Team, to the Miinus family of retailers. Ian’s excellent reputation as a quality kitchen retailer, his vast knowledge and experience in kitchen design and his passion for improving the environment is a perfect fit for our pioneering range”. The launch of the Miinus range in the UK comes at a time when market research carried out for Mintel’s Consumer Trends 2015 publication, discovered that “76% of UK adults pay attention to the ethical and green credentials of products, including manufacturing and distribution processes, as well as the reputation of companies or brands”. ENHANCING THE END OF AN ERA…! Bespoke Cars prolonging the life of the iconic Land Rover Defender. It’s now no real secret that the iconic and hugely loved shape of the original Land Rover is to take its final bow out of production in December 2015. So, for over 65 years this rugged vehicle has nestled its way into our hearts at a truly global level. From the humble hill farmer to the Royal family, from the Camel Trophy to the theatre of battle, the Land Rover, in its more or less original form has proven itself countless times and won its place in the annals of history – There is no other word than “iconic”, for Maurice Wilke’s design. Incoming and ever more stringent emissions law, coupled with the relatively high cost of manufacture spell the end of volume production, so potentially, it is genuinely sad to be faced with saying farewell to such an old and trusted friend. Just as well then, we have companies like Bespoke Cars of Harrogate….For several years now this business has been working wonders with the original version of the Defender shape, enhancing the standard vehicle by adding some

extra comfort, mechanical modifications, and cosmetic individuality. Bespoke cars have always remained faithful to the original car, and its famously rugged and enduring utilitarian nature – but the clever bit is what more Bespoke can do ! They make them go a bit better, stop a bit better and critically, be a little more usable and comfortable for the everyday. Their sales manager comments:-“Bespoke’s work compliments an already great functional vehicle. By taking some of the edges off, we wrap our Defenders up into a smart, comfortable and individualised package……with any number of improvements ! In this respect the best just got better !” In today’s ultra-competitive world of car mass production, the Defender is undoubtedly a bit of a black sheep…but dearly loved by so many the world over. Bespoke seemingly will take you as far as you need to go. They offer improvements across the piece – interiors making use of “Bentley” style diamond stitched
leather upholstery, suede headliners and even their latest panoramic roof. The “Business like” exteriors are not just cosmetic either, their quartz light conversion give amazing night road vision – a new experience for anyone familiar with the Defenders of old ! And finally the mechanical improvements can take you all the way to a power upgrade giving 50% more power from the standard power plant. Bespoke really do enjoy a complimentary relationship with the iconic Defender. They’ll supply a new cars to the customer’s specification on a prescriptive and as the name suggests “Bespoke” basis, whilst they are still available, but also have a buying department constantly sourcing suitable pre-owned donor cars ripe for conversion. Perhaps the biggest part of the business though, and not entirely surprisingly, is enhancing customers own already existing vehicles. Why ? It’s an amazing fact that as proportion of the total number cars made, no other vehicle has a higher proportion still on the road (or in the field !) So fortunately, demand for Bespoke’s individual expertise is showing no signs of abating, they will be working their magic on this iconic car for many years to come, but if you wanted a new one….better get your skates on……Tick tock !

A SENSE OF OCCASION
DINING ROOMS
By Kelly Hoppen
Dedicated dining rooms have been undergoing a reappraisal in recent years. There was a time when they were considered rather redundant spaces, often used instead as home offices or playrooms.
H
owever, increasingly there has been a return to the idea of having a separate dining room, used mainly for entertaining, in addition to an informal dining zone linked to the kitchen. The latter is more likely to be used for family meals or relaxed supper parties, providing a contrast in mood and style to the formality of the dining room. If you do have room for both, it makes good sense. The joy of a dining room is that it becomes synonymous with special occasions, the place where friends and family gather for traditional Sunday lunches, festivals, celebrations and birthdays. It is more likely to be used in the evening, so you can be braver with moody colours, rich textures and bold artwork. By contrast, the family dining area is more of a daytime space and its design needs to be coherent with that of the kitchen. Whether you have room for both, or just one, remember that the dining room comes alive because of the people who gather there to laugh, talk and eat. You will achieve something wonderful if you keep this at the forefront of your mind and make comfort a priority. This applies not just to the chairs you choose – ones that prevent aching bottoms or backs – but also to atmospheric lighting, the music you play, the food you serve and the care you take over dressing the table. 108
LUXURY HOMES & INTERIORS
Key Considerations First ask yourself one very basic but necessary question: how many people do you wish to fit around the table? This might sound incredibly obvious, but your answer will affect not only the size and shape of the table you choose, but also its design – in particular, where the legs are placed. You can buy a table that looks as though it will easily seat four people along one side, but if the legs are poorly positioned, you might find you can only fit three. If you are buying your table and chairs from different suppliers, you need to make sure that they are physically compatible. This applies to both the length and height of the table – few things are more uncomfortable than sitting at a table that is either too high or too low. Remember, too, a table must be filled with people. There is no point buying one that seats twelve, just because you can, if you are more likely to entertain for six. All that empty space will just look neglected and sad. With so many extendable designs available, there is no reason why you shouldn’t buy one that can adapt easily to your needs. The shape of table you choose will be determined by the shape of the room. Rectangular tables are a joy to dress, because they create an immediate grid reference within the room. A rectangular or square table is the ideal canvas on which to place banners or runners. If you are splashing out on a really wonderful dining table, consider commissioning one to order – perhaps wood with a bronze runner down the centre, or two contrasting shades of lacquer. Round tables have the advantage of allowing everyone to talk to everyone else. However, these do require more space than you might imagine, as people need to be able to move freely around the table when the chairs are slightly pushed out. If you are designing from a floor plan it is essential to allow enough flow when deciding what size and shape of furniture to order. In a dining zone – the continuation of an open-plan living and cooking space – you need a table and chairs that fit with the style and mood of the adjoining areas, while also imbuing it with its own.

LUXURY HOMES & INTERIORS
FEATURE | The Dining Room
Furniture If the budget is tight, spend on the chairs rather than the table. This is because the table can always be covered and beautifully dressed, so arguably it could be made of simple plywood and nobody need know. The chairs, however, are like pieces of sculpture in an otherwise uncluttered room. Rather than buy a set that is all matching, consider shaking up the look by having, say, two over-scaled wing chairs at each end and three or four low tub chairs on each side. Introduce some wonderful fabrics, such as dark velvets against lighter linens, or leather teamed with suede. Remember, too, that the backs of dining chairs are as important as the seats – you might introduce panels of contrasting colour or texture to make these a bold visual statement.
Storage is also important. The dining room is the natural place to keep tableware, glasses, linen and cutlery, so if possible allow space for a sideboard, buffet or dresser. These traditional pieces of furniture have now been rejuvenated in many interesting forms, materials and textures, so you are sure to find one that suits your own style. Make a note of what you want to keep here and carry the dimensions, such as those of extra large platters or dishes, with you when you are out looking. Ask yourself whether you want to display tableware and glasses or keep them out of sight. Also, consider whether you need a serving area or a place to keep food warm. Think how you yourself like to entertain – as with other rooms, it is about what your own requirements are.

FEATURE | The Dining Room
112
LUXURY HOMES & INTERIORS
Style The dedicated dining room is a place where you can be brave in terms of decoration, because it is about giving guests a ‘wow’ moment. Since it is likely to be used more by night than by day, you can choose darker, more atmospheric tones and textures. Keep to a neutral palette, one in keeping with the rest of your home, but intensify colours to a degree. This is a space to dress with confidence. Hard floors work well in dining rooms – and have practical advantages, too – but because the dining room is likely to lead off the hall, there should be some correlation between the two. The best houses are those in which you move seamlessly from one area to the next, and the floor is the best way of ensuring that sense of continuity. The same applies to a dining zone adjoined to the kitchen – design the floor to lead the eye with ease from one area to the other. In rectangular-shaped rooms, banners on floors are particularly effective – such as two contrasting shades of wood or stone. Curtains are likely to be drawn closed at
night, so introduce glamour to the windows with wonderfully shimmering layers of sheers, silks or taffeta. Allowing fabric to pool to the floor adds to the feeling of luxury and extravagance. Lighting Whether the space is formal or informal, lighting is key to the success of a dining room. Glittering chandeliers, huge industrial pendants or other bold statement lights look particularly wonderful when hung low over the table, having the effect of drawing people together beneath them. However, if you have a low pendant light, you cannot also introduce tall candelabras, as the two will fight for space. Candles are the natural accompaniment to dining, but as they cast very little actual light, you will need to boost them with indirect, subtly placed additional light sources. Do not light your dining room so brightly that guests feel selfconscious and uncomfortable. If you have chosen a fabulous textured wall surface, make sure this is enhanced fully by wall washers or floor washers that add an additional layer of beauty. LUXURY HOMES & INTERIORS

Opposite - This elegantly controled dining room has been designed to comfortably seat 18. The white-lacquered wood floor provides the framework for the taupe-lacquered table and unusual cross-legged chairs. Two large consoles are positioned against the windows, while a pair of ceramic pendant lights accentuate their symmetry. The white shutters, lacquered to match the floor, act as a subtle divide between this space and the next. The floor lamp at the far end of the room is Conversation Apparatus by Fadi Mansour.
Below - In a spacious dining room such as this, it is important to keep the layout of the furniture strong and simple. Attention is focused on the table itself by the grid of whitelacqured flooring against the natural timber, The two bold console tables emphasize the grid structure and provide a place for display. At one end of the room is a sideboard, with doors to the kitchen on either side, while shuttered divides at the other end open into the adjacent room,
Slatted screen doors which can be closed to divide the dining room from the living room.
IN DETAIL Dining Room First ask yourself when the dining room is most likely to be used and by whom, and is it a separate room or part of an open-plan layout?

Decide how many people you want to seat around the table and assess the shape of the room as to which shape of table will work best. Make sure that your chosen chairs are compatible with the table in terms of size, height, position of table legs and the allowing of flow. Consider whether this is more of a night-time space or a daytime one and remember that lighting must be as comfortable as the furniture. Make sure you have allowed for enough storage.
Underpin the scheme with the grid – by using a runner on the dining table, perhaps, or by incorporating a banner of contrasting material. Collect different sets of tableware, linen, cutlery and glasses to create a variety of looks and moods.
Dining rooms are often the natural place to display collections and artwork, and this also requires good lighting. If you are lighting paintings, photographs, objets or sculpture from above, use filters to distribute light evenly and reduce glare. If you want to highlight a small work of art, use a tight beam of light that really throws it into focus – particularly important in a room with a high ceiling.

Spectacular design
and a clear conscience When regattas are staged on the Thames in summer, Stefanie and Neil Jackson and their two children shout encouragement to the rowers from the bank, since their new home is on the second row, just a stone’s throw from the river.
T
hey live in Marlow, a small town with about 14,000 residents, 30 miles west of London. Thanks to its setting on the banks of England’s second longest river, the outstanding transport links to the capital (the journey takes just a good forty-five minutes if the traffic is light) it ranks amongst the most sought-after places to live in England. In contrast to their immediate neighbours, who live in a half-timbered Victorian house, the American and her British husband wanted to live in a brand new house. As enthusiastic viewers of “Grand Designs”, a television programme broadcast on British television presenting unusual private-sector dwellings since 1999, and as readers of the journal of the same name, 120

they came across Baufritz as a result of an article they read in it. Then Stefanie and Neil Jackson visited the office in Cambridge. The fact that Baufritz only uses non-toxic building materials and the energy balance of its houses is so outstanding were so impressive for both of them, that the pair decided to have a house built by the house building company in the Alllgäu. “Because our children are still small it is important for us that they grow up, at home at least, without being exposed to dangerous substances”, explained Stefanie. “Besides which, we want to build a house bearing sustainability in mind for ecological reasons and even trap CO2 with our house.”

As an aficionado of architecture the design had to be modern for the business-owning family – he manages a logistics company. To ensure that everything went smoothly on site Baufritz contracted an experienced architect who had already been working for Baufritz for several years. He will also be submitting the draft planning to the authorities. The Jacksons only travelled to Bavaria once on a fact-finding mission. They will never forget the day on which the first of a total of eleven container lorries packed with house components drove up to the site. All the neighbours had been forewarned since the lorries made it impossible for any other vehicles to park, let alone drive or turn in the one-way street. It only took three days before the building was weatherproof and the work on fixtures and fittings could begin. For the onlookers and others the scene could have come straight from a film.
The building supervisory authorities approved the luxurious new house because there had already been a bungalow on the 1,100 square metre site. However, they only allowed the larger living space of almost 290 square meters on two storeys because the new home had a flat roof like the bungalow. The wangles and dodges allowing the right hand side of the building to overhang towards the road and to have a diagonal wall leading in towards the front door, give the house character. Staggered lines along the length of the house and to the garden create an exciting field of vision. Organic mineral rendering covers the walls to maximum thermal insulation standards. The house is built around the loadbearing framework of German kiln-dried structural solid wood. The organic “HOIZ” made of wood shavings either produced in making the house components or from inspected FSC certified wood growers. It is the top natural insulation material in the world to be awarded the coveted “Cradle to Cradle”certification. The EPEA-Institut (Environmental Protection Encouragement Agency) in Hamburg under the management of Professor Michael Braungart only awards the accolade for products which are sustainable from Cradle to Cradle and which do not harm the environment, nature or mankind in any way and which can be recycled at the end of their useful service life. Baufritz uses natural whey for fire prevention and sodalye is used as a fungicide. Deeper foundations are required by building law in this area, to protect the building from flooding should the Thames burst its banks. Three outside doors provide access from the site to the raised ground floor of the house. The impressive entrance hall serves as a central focus of the house. A leaf-door leads from there into the family room, which is to be used as a television room. Another sliding door leads into

the library. Besides this door there is a cloakroom and a guest WC. Thanks to almost ten square metres of windows in the roof lighting the entire stairwell, and the balustrade of safety glass the entrance hall is an architectonic eye-catcher. The open-plan kitchen, dining and living area also benefit from the incidence of light. Along the entire width of the house floor to ceiling windows, triple glazing of course, separate indoors from outdoors. They also benefit from the warmth of the sun since they are south-facing. The Jacksons only allowed brickwork for the fire place. A mounted steel cross in front of a section of glass by the dining table was required to provide static support to allow the enormous spans. The Jacksons furnished the entrance level sparingly in order not to impair the extensive lines of sight. Their two-storey cube is a conscious antithesis to many half-timbered houses characterised by their small windows and rooms.
The healthy living architecture is continued with the fixtures and fittings. All walls are painted with organic paint, the flooring consists of oiled wooden floorboards or slate. The Jacksons had several cupboards made from solid wood by a joiner working on behalf of Baufritz. Upstairs there is the main bedroom with a separate dressing room and two bedrooms for the children overlooking the garden. The design of the three bathrooms is particularly clever. In addition to outside windows, all of them also have a light strip to the gallery which makes them even lighter. The office and guest rooms overlook the road. As a result of the sustainable method of construction the Jackson’s new home will be making an active contribution to protecting the climate, since it absorbs more than 40 tons of CO2 over the longer term. The aim of the sophisticated energy concept is to harm the environment as little as possible. Solar collectors heat up the used water. Photovoltaic panels generate electricity and a controlled ventilation unit with waste heat recovery exploits the heat energy of the gas therms. The Jacksons collect rainwater for flushing the toilets and for watering their garden!

Handmade in Britain, In any fabric in the World.
Born of a long pedigree that embraces both Maples, Waring and Gillow and Sofa Workshop, Sofas&Stuff is the latest handmade, upholstered sofa incarnation from established furniture entrepreneur, Andrew Cussins, son of the late Manny Cussins, the legendary 1970’s chairman of Leeds United. Three of Sofas&Stuff’s 12 UK stores are based in the North of England: in Manchester, Harrogate and at Redbrick Mill just outside Leeds. Key to the growing success of Sofas&Stuff is the spectacular core offering of handmade British custom sofas: a range of all the classic shapes, many with a modern twist or refinement, all of which can be made to order in “any fabric in the world”. A bold claim -and presumably challenging to service- but this is more than a mantra and a promise which Andrew Cussins is completely determined to deliver on. To emphasise this, the ‘&Stuff’ of the title refers back to the eighteenth century, when what we call ‘fabric’ was known to all as ‘stuff’. A very strong online market performance and an upwardlymobile digital presence across the web, using all trappings available to modern trades via the internet, means that while its roots are in the British tradition, Sofas&Stuff is entirely 21st century in its operations and vision. Stores are not on the high street: instead you can find Sofas&Stuff in beautiful restored barns set in idyllic country, in former mills, walled gardens in country estates and revamped city centre warehouses. Not always easy to find, but worth the effort. Staff are a team and every one an expert at the subtle art of matching clients to furniture, guiding them through the huge array of the world’s best fabrics from the best design houses. The website at www.sofasandstuff.com gives an inspiring taste of the stores and the range of sofas and the fabrics – but it can only be a taste, as the permutations available are literally countless. For those in more of a hurry – the wait for a custom sofa is around 6 weeks – there is a spanking new range of clean-lined, modern, mid-century-inspired, Far–East-sourced and frankly cheaper sofas, chairs and sofa beds, aptly named SOFA PRONTO, which can be delivered in just seven days. The thing to remember is that your choice of sofa, bed, chair or sofabed is limited only by your imagination: there are beauties to be had, ready-upholstered of course, but if you want to find a piece unique to you, custom-made, at a price you can afford, then Sofas & Stuff really is the business.
