LAKESIDE LUXURY WELCOME TO ENGLAND’S OWN RIVIERA When the weather is fine - and let’s face it, UK weather can be challenging for doses of vitamin D - there is an exceptional charm to a good English lakeside that can match that of our continental cousins in every way.

ake possibly the UK’s finest famous lakeside location (ignoring notable exceptions in Scotland), Bowness-onWindermere, made famous as the Victorian and Edwardian tonic retreat of choice - possibly with a bit of help from Beatrix Potter. To be more precise, one of the largest stretches of water and ‘the’ largest of the Cumbrian lakes, Windermere, saw it fit for speed record attempts in the 1930’s by Sir Henry Seagrave. Nowadays the speedboat laws have calmed the water sports to a much more sedate pace of 10 knots, which no doubt the Victorian’s would approve. Surrounded by steep hills and cliffs Bowness was the idyllic setting for our ‘country escape’ project. Commencing with the vicinity of possibly the most sought after of all the English lake locations. Add to that the recent rejuvenated Marina ‘village’ – which now looks as cosmopolitan as if it were the French or Italian Riviera, with its bars, restaurants, accommodation and leisure facilities - is a stone’s throw away. 16

The house itself was originally believed to have been built late in the 1800’s as part of the original wave of Victorian gentry eager to take in the therapeutic effects of a lakeside solitude

More exclusively less than 20 houses alone have private access to the precious lake itself, making this one of the most sought after for its location alone. This particular property has envious landscaped gardens snaking down to the water edge lapping at the private wooden jetty with a slow, friendly clapping and beckoning you to cast open the ornate wooden boat house doors and come enjoy the satisfying therapy of a boat trip out on the vast silky surface. Within minutes of breathing the freshest of crisp air you can’t help but let out a satisfying “ahhh” as you feel your muscles virtually massaged by the magical combination of the elements and in the distance the soft ‘tink, tink’ sound of mast poles bobbing and beckoning to come and play on the water. The house itself was originally believed to have been built late in the 1800’s as part of the original wave of Victorian gentry eager to take in the therapeutic effects of a lakeside solitude. The views - and my those scenes are so spectacular they make the amateur artist in most want to reach for the paints – defy you not to recuperate from the vision alone. To sit out on the veranda sipping a favourite beverage, in a gently swinging chair and take in that exceptional vista must be about as gratifying as it gets for an English country view involving water. At least, the best available in-land. And to be surrounded by lush tree-lined commanding hills and mountains which on a still day counter reflect a skyline in mirror-like water for an even more dramatic vision. Stripping back the property, the home needed a thorough health check and thankfully most of the bare bones was in order before we could undertake a massive transformation to totally modernise the holiday home to a much more contemporary lifestyle which the owners had briefed us with. As an initial undertaking, there was a full programme to retain and restore with care any original features – such as the marvellous bay window detailing, coving, wood features and archways. The approach was enhanced by the introduction of a beautiful stone portico which set the scene for what was about to be revealed internally. The entrance was converted and now opens to a large seating area to welcome guests in comfort or take a quiet rest in front of the fireplace. The fireplace was gilded in an antique silver and flanked by two beautiful, craftsman made cabinets. Careful consideration was given to focal points, ensuring that the eye was drawn to the key pieces but also that the journey through the home was controlled in a manner to provide a feast for the eyes. Whilst there were originally two doors within the room The Design Practice by UBER created a full wall of intricately cut mirrors adorned by a beautiful pair of wall lights and where a carefully concealed door was hidden giving access only from one side. It was clear that to maximise those monumental views in line with a brief that was to include entertaining, the living quarter needed to be opened up by removing one of the walls to create a larger sitting-room-come-music-room with easy access out on to the terrace to allow the seamless flow of entertainment. The interior seating areas were visually divided for a zonal delineation using semi-solid panels of bronze fretwork. The geometric pattern and open design adding just the right depth of visual intrigue without closing the spaces off or interrupting the light. These stunning additions were made to our designs in Italy using solid timbers and cold applied metal finishes. 20

The owners requested a glamorous look with the use of metallic fabric and materials to shimmer (picking up on the metaphor of sunlight on the water) as well as more subtle sheers and muted tones. Layered with some deeper earthy tone and deep blue velvets creating a very layered luxurious look. The bespoke bar area is perfectly positioned with a large picture window overlooking the lake from where to sit and enjoy mid-afternoon cocktails or for late night entertainment. The bar was designed to tonally complement the living spaces, introducing the same cold applied metals and finished in leather. Every detail was considered for the comfort of the home owner including a bronze foot rail and all the facilities you would expect from a boutique hotel bar. A dark and glamorous powder room provided for the perfect addition to the space with bronze mirror detailing and low level lighting. The newly built wooden boat house at the end of the sloped garden adds a romance to the vista and strongly gestures to the charming styles of Austrian and Swiss lakes. The owner converted a rather sad looking original boathouse into something the Victorians would have been incredibly proud of. This was built with every conceivable detail beyond its former glory celebrating beautiful hand-carved skills and elaborating further than its predecessor. A befitting dwelling in-keeping with this delightful spot. And like the house and its grounds will no doubt enjoy many an admiring glance for years to come. LUXURY HOMES & INTERIORS

If you manage to draw yourself away from the allure of the lake and the downstairs accommodation, upstairs the 5-bedroom property has 3-ensuite bathrooms (with 2 further well-appointed bedrooms in the upper floor). Each were completed to the individual needs of the ownerâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s teenage offspring so that they can immediately be comfortable as a home-from-home. None are more impressive than the master bedroom where we positioned the bed and its elegant, oversized headboard to command the views across the lake. An open balcony provides the perfect morning coffee setting and the bathroom befits any 5-star hotel. Each of the bedrooms were designed and furnished to create an individual look and feel, to provide an ever-impressive journey through the home, with intrigue, interest and certainly wow factor around every corner. The outside verandas were designed to maximise the wonderful setting with large lounging spaces, dining and of course an outdoor cooking area. The main kitchen was hand built and extended to provide a magnificent space with riven stone fireplace and open views from both aspects. We are especially proud to have played our part in what is an exceptional English country residence. As English holiday homes go I canâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t think of another that has such an instant ability to unravel your troubles and sooth away your cares. As part of the brief, they wanted to keep the soul of the rooms and reuse any items possible, for example, the open shelves on the wall, the racks in the kitchen, the copper sink wooden lid, the housekeeper’s cupboard and the old marble on brick pillars have all been restored to create a beautifully styled kitchen with stateof-the-art facilities. keep the soul of the rooms There were a number of period pine tables in storage and after measuring they found the perfect fit for the Pastry Room. The long table was restored and marble was cut to fit over the original tabletop that was left in place. The old marble on the original brick pillars was reused and cut up to be used as work boards. Karan Main, Designer and Director at The Main Company, came up with the core project ideas and then worked with Carlton Towers Estate manager, Simon Kershaw, Food Writer Elaine Lemm and The Main Company’s computer designers to finalise details. The main priority was to deliver on the brief. Functionality, wow factor, keeping the Downton Abbey feel, keeping as much free space to move around in were also major considerations for this project. The Main Company were mostly given free rein on the kitchen but wanted to keep the soul of the rooms in the best way that they could! It is the gothic splendour of Carlton Towers that makes it such a perfect setting and splendid venue. Therefore the layout of the room was really important, the school’s kitchens and facilities are a careful merge of the beautifully restored original kitchens of the house and state-of-theart facilities including AEG steam ovens and inductions hobs. The main kitchen is a large open plan space that features a large central island with 10 work stations and two striking black classic ovens, which are originals but not part of the working kitchen at the moment. They do however, work very well as focal points and The Main Company very much wanted to keep them part of the renovation. As a cookery school, they took into consideration the specific distance between the work stations. 40

beautiful Butler sinks and gold taps with exposed copper piping, beautifully keeping in style There are several rooms that The Main Company were involved in, the main Cooks Kitchen, games room, pastry room, shop, butler’s pantry, the other rooms the Duchess’s dining room and the sitting room were designed by Lady Gerald Fitzalan-Howard (Emma to her friends!). Emma, an interior designer, used exisiting exqusitie antique furniture in the sitting room and dining room where guests meet and eat the product of the cookery school’s labours! She also chouse all the colours for the units and all the other rooms. The cabinetry is made from tulipwood, reclaimed teak and redwood and it’s painted in French Grey and the walls are painted in Felt, both by Little Greene. The cabinetry undercoats were sprayed and then The Main Company hand painted the final coat. For each station there are fridges, hobs and storage, a round end sideboard based on the original one that was found in the kitchen, which The Main Company restored and put in the shop which also has fridges, cargo bins and hobs. There’s also 6 AEG steam ovens, which are housed in tall units with a lower connecting unit with an induction hob. The wash stations include beautiful Butler sinks and gold taps with exposed copper piping, beautifully keeping in style. Power points feature throughout including wall and pop-up sockets in the island. There’s a sous vide vac pac, which looks like a warming drawer, these are usually situated underneath the pro combi sous vide steam oven. But to adapt to the minimal space The Main Company had to work with this, they decided to place it 42

underneath the original and very large meat safe that was also restored by them, using the space below on the meat safe stand. The original racks were also kept, and worked around the cast pillar to keep the soul of the property within the scheme. The Main Company restored one of the racks beautifully and it features exactly in the same place as before, housing crockery between the windows. They moved the other rack in between the tall cupboards that house the AEG steam ovens and had to shape the bottom shelf back to enable it to sit behind the hob area. The cast pillar is a stunning piece of engineering where it tapers to the top. The Main Company had to get the power to the island and the original floor could not be lifted easily. When the builders attempted to lift the floor, they realised that the tiles would crack so the estate builders did not continue with it. The cast pillar is such a beautiful part in keeping with the style and heritage of the property and designer Karan couldn’t bear the thought of having a modern cable casing running down it! Karan then had one of those “Four o’clock in the morning lightbulb moments!” and though that they could use a length of an original brass bar foot rail she had in stock at work, which was hollow. The cables ran along the ceiling in a rectangular conduit box and then dropped down the foot rail and the local agricultural engineers, Spruce & Hawe, made the brackets. These firstly had to fit on to the cast pillar and then the footrail as a double bracket. The finish was left in raw steel for an authentic industrial look. BACK TO BLACK When we think of timeless fashion pieces in a lady’s wardrobe, the words: ‘Classic’ and ‘Elegant’ come to mind. The icon is ‘the little black dress’. This grace can easily be reflected into interior design- dark colours make a great backdrop for different textures and colours, for example the striking impact of a large black gloss lacquer kitchen can be surprisingly chic and dramatic. The team at ArtHouse Creative Interiors have recently completed a project based in London, where their client wanted a very luxurious and opulent design that suited his personal taste and style. A full home renovation was taking place, and the holistic, affluent style was carried throughout. ArtHouse worked very closely with the interior designer to make sure that the open plan kitchen/ dining room would harmonise well together and complement the interior design concept of the home. Each of the SieMatic style collections is a stage for its own contemporary life philosophy, which is expressed not only in the design of the furniture and the choice of colours and materials, but also in holistic room planning concepts, that reflect the personality and individual lifestyle of the home owners. Their clients brief asked for a contemporary style, with a handle-less design so the SieMatic PURE lifestyle was the perfect choice. The purist design language of carefully planned, handle-free SieMatic kitchen furniture, with perfectly aligned joints show off the choice of high-quality materials such as polished stainless steel, combined with gloss black lacquer and nickel wall cabinets. The striking black and white marbled floor, black glass, stainless steel appliances and the mirror splashback add fashionable detail. The

contrasting white Corian worktops stand out in sharp relief against lacquered black cabinets. Now let’s look at the appliances, the kitchen is the hub of the home so needs to be aesthetically pleasing as well as functional, so ArtHouse created a design where the ergonomics and anthropometrics worked effortlessly. The client wanted the highest specification of appliances, making a feature of the stand-out Sub Zero refrigeration and wine preservation cabinet that have large iconic stainless steel doors. In terms of their oven housing, Miele was their choice of 2 single pyro ovens, a coffee machine and combi microwave. The sleek black glass design and stainless steel trims stood perfectly with the SieMatic kitchen furniture. On the island, the black glass Miele Induction hob sits central to allow the cook to engage with family sat the breakfast bar; and the luxurious design of the suspended Elica extractor system above suits the clients brief flawlessly. As a design feature for the kitchen, the client wanted a Champagne trough built in to the Corian work surface, for when they have friends and family round for entertaining- It is a statement element to the kitchen as a final finishing touch to the lavish design. Now that the client has completed the whole interior design renovation and have settled in, they are truly delighted with the kitchen living space, which amplifies their exquisite London residence. The dark hues, mix of carefully selected materials and textures feature as a footprint of good design that lasts for decades. THE ROOTS OF INTERIOR DESIGN Hale – it’s not every day that a quaint English village is placed onto a global pedestal in the interior design realm. Yet a family run business in this famed Cheshire locale is now at the centre of a rapidly growing design trend – an emerging direction that’s promising not only brighter and more beautiful residential, educational and commercial spaces, but spaces that also improve mood, health and holistic wellness.

Today, however, interest in this area is thriving, with Google searches for the term doubling over the last few years. But what’s driving this interest? I Want Plants, Managing Director, Richard Rowlands, says: “The last few decades have seen us becoming increasingly urbanised, houses overlooked with less green space. “Biophilic is all about bringing nature back into your life. Last year was very much about Scandinavian Hygge (translates to ‘being cosy’) which heavily featured raw natural materials to help create a cosy, connected feeling. The term ‘biophilic design’, stems from ‘biophilia’ – the love of nature, which was popularised by Harvard conservationist E.O. Wilson, who argued that humans are hard-wired with a need to connect to nature . By not doing so we are opening ourselves up to increased levels of stress and anxiety. This is the most fundamental notion of biophilic design – to bring nature and the innate calming qualities into spaces. To work nature,

plants and greenery into modern spaces in innovative ways that enhance the rooms in which we live, work, educate and shop. Rather than creating obstructions or seeming out of place, when done right biophilic design makes it seem natural for plants, trees, and naturefocused features to be amongst the scenery. In every sense, biophilic design is about bringing the outdoors, in – it is the seamless meeting of nature with modern life. Richard said: “It is a concept which evolved in the workplace, but is now being embraced by interior designers and being applied to the home and the garden.”
