all-embracing area for family and social life, where spaces are opened up into one another and we all endeavour to live more communally and freely. By Kelly Hoppen.

The theatre of the home T

he way we look at kitchen design is markedly different to how we viewed it even as little as five years ago. The influences of celebrity chefs such as jamie oliver, nigella lawson and gordon ramsay have shifted our perceptions of life in the kitchen possibly more than any other factor. We have been inspired to loosen up and cook with abandon. To cook and entertain at home is cool, and this, combined with the aspiration for open-plan living, has made the kitchen become a sophisticated cutting- edge environment of ease and beauty, with space for living, dining, playing and working. It is the theatre at the heart of the home, where you chill with friends, tackle homework and make plans. It is also the place where, if you were invited to a kitchen supper, you would think twice about turning up in your tracksuit. Kitchen planning I treat the subject of kitchens as being highly personal and specific. One of my jobs is

to deprogramme and then reprogramme my clientsâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; brains, so that first of all they agree to put their kitchen in the right place. The position of a kitchen should always be based on your way of living, rather than on where the kitchen is currently sited, irrespective of whether or not you have to reroute the plumbing. Work on the basis of available space and how you want to use the kitchen. Ask yourself questions and make a list of your needs to create a tight brief â&#x20AC;&#x201C; all decisions need to be based on your vision, your requirements and your pocket. I bring in kitchen planners on every job, as the kitchen is the most complex of rooms and possibly the most important, since it is where most of us spend the majority of our time. Achieving a workable openplan space with three or four zones demands a meticulous and organized approach. At the first meeting, show the planner your mood board of ideas displaying the elements and furniture you wish to be worked into the scheme; explain your brief with as much detail as possible, to get to CHESHIRE LUXURY

The glass-ToppeD islanD in my kiTchen was set with a four-ring gas hob. it is a triumph for me, as the rings are arranged in a single row, so that i never have to lean over a hot pan. Beyond the island, the open sliding doors frame the way into the entrance hall of my home, where I have a vignette of two stunning zinc-framed 1960s mirrors from philip thomas displayed with other treasures. 8

the core of the design and the range of options. How many zones can you accommodate in your space? How will each one be lit? Do you want air conditioning or an integrated sound system? Will you need to install a suspended ceiling for extraction and ducting? What combination of surface materials will work in terms of both practicality and look? What proportion of your budget have you set aside for this room? The planner will have answers and solutions, but first you need to make the call on each question. Let the ideas flow and investigate your options, but stick to your brief to keep the kitchen workable for you, and compromise with care where you have to. Even though most specialist kitchen companies term their designs universal, this is not always the case. The same concept will not necessarily work for a couple with children as for a divorced man. Gender does come into it: boys like toys, and men tend to want it ‘easy’ in the cooking and eating areas, with perhaps the emphasis on the chill-out-and-play zone. A design’s conception will always depend on your circumstances and how you like to live. Surfaces and finishes There are wonderful surfaces to play with in kitchens – generally wood, lacquer, glass, stone, stainless steel and ceramic. Whatever you choose has to work for where you are putting it. I have successfully had wooden floors in kitchens (they need periodic refinishing) and less successfully had concrete and resin (they can crack if the substratum is not solid). Think of the tones of colour and the varying textures of the materials you like at the same time as thinking practically, because you want to make connections between the zones to give the room its balance. Design solutions: my kitchen The layout of my kitchen takes up the majority of the ground floor: there is an island– bar chill-out zone at the front of the house, which flows into the working zone, which flows into the dining zone at the back, which opens into the garden. I knew from the outset that I wanted a comfortable and open series of spaces in a monochromatic, textural palette. I wanted

a fireplace in the kitchen, up on the wall like a painting. My look is a tidy mess, and i like being able to pull things from the shelves without opening a door. This led to a new design of sliding cupboard-front panels in place of doors, which read to the eye as charismatic vertical banners, as they do not span the entire width of the cupboard shelves. Boffi built the kitchen units in a special mocha-toned lacquer, and the feeling in the space is that of a furnished room, rather than a zone of wall-to-wall storage. The use of milk glass (toughened glass with a painted and foil back) gave me a superb working surface for all the counters. It is very tough and practical, as well as beautiful and reflective, and i have come to use it in place of stone and wood surfaces all over the house because it is pricesavvy and relatively easy to install. These are personal examples illustrating how i reached certain design solutions and will perhaps inspire some original and practical solutions for your own project. Kitchen lighting Getting the lighting right is enormously important, but it does not need to be overly complex. All lighting should be controllable, by way of individual dimmer switches or a main pre-set control panel for each zone, which can be programmed for instant lighting settings. The principle is to have task lights by which to prepare food and ambient light to create and enhance mood. Discreet under-cupboard lighting is a must, and it is worth considering toplighting the cupboards to add a soft glow. I chose surface-mounted globe-shaped nickel lights, having tired of the pockmarked look created by recessed ceiling lights. I like to see lights, and I also love to see the detail of a nickel screw in a fixing plate – it adds to the overall beauty of the many layers of interest and texture. Appliances and furnishings For some, the choice of appliances alludes to the level their cooking has reached; for others, it is purely the kudos of having ‘it’ items. I have a thing about sub- zero refrigerators (the aston martin of fridges, freezers and wine coolers), am very particular about taps (pieces of sculpture),

My kitchen was made to measure by boffi in this mocha-toned lacquer finish. The cupboards have a slim banner-style sliding door that allows me to see and access crockery easily. I always wanted a fireplace in my kitchen, and this bd design fire sculpture has been set in a bespoke fireplace with a chrome edge, mounted high on the wall like a painting. The chrome and leather bar chairs were custom-made by talisman, based on one of their original pieces.

would never be without a tap that provides instant boiling water, and like gas hobs that run in a line of up to five rings (they are practical and look incredible). I install air conditioning and like extraction fans that pop up from the counter. Whatever your design, never underestimate the value of comfort in a room where you are so often to be found. Instead of stools for my island– bar, I had some retro leather and chrome chairs altered to the correct height (and additional ones made). Everyone loves this part of my kitchen; it is not only the chill- and-chat zone, it is a place to work, read, have breakfast and generally ‘be’. the complete package... We recently spent some time at MODO in Bramhall who work with Warendorf, formerly Miele and Bontempi kitchens and it was clear to see what Lisa and her team actually offer is a complete package for the discerning customer; it’s refreshing to see they are not just simply kitchens but a design emporium for all manors of the home. We asked Lisa why they chose for Modo to be a design studio and not just a kitchen studio. “ We are very conscious not to proclaim we are the best at everything, we all know the story of Jack of all trades but we are very good at designing and bringing together other collaborations into our customer’s homes. We never wanted it to stop just at the kitchen door, especially as so many of our customer’s have open plan living spaces, where the kitchens become the hub of the home. For us it’s important to help our customers with any aspect they want, whether it is their flooring or colour schemes. There are many items we don’t actually do ourselves so it’s about pulling all the right teams together to help our customers feel that we’ve got their back.”

c u c i n e I have to say it is a nice environment to be in; a kind of mood board heaven and Lisa seems to light up when talking about any of her projects. In fact we were lucky enough to sit in on one of her meetings with Siminetti, a luxurious mother of pearl mosaic company. This is just another example of how Lisa positions her design skills working with major companies like this to produce some exciting collaborations. We asked Simon Powell, the MD of Siminetti what it was about MODO that he equally got excited about. “ We’ve worked with Lisa and her team for several years and as a result have built a longstanding relationship with a lot of respect for what each of our companies brings to the table. Having worked with Lisa on some wonderful projects across the country, from simple kitchen backsplashes to elegant steam rooms, we can be sure that the Siminetti brand is in safe and knowledgeable hands. Through meetings like todays, it’s always interesting to see what new ideas Lisa comes up with. Pleased to say we’ve taken an order already today (it’s only 9.30) and business is steady. The wet weather recently certainly helps business but you’ve got to stay committed and offer customers great choice and great value if you’re going to attract business. You obviously have a very large showroom, how did you grow the business? A lot of our business is by recommendation and by word of mouth. It’s vital that we offer our customers great service from the initial consultation right through to the area of after sales. It’s an old saying but it’s true, you live by your sales but you can die by your after sales service.

So, do you have a Gas or Electric Fireplace at home? I’ve got a Dru gas fire in my lounge with a Contura wood burning stove in my kitchen. In these times which is doing better, Stove, Gas or Electric? There’s always a market for all three. It very much depends on lifestyle choice as much as on budget. Gas fires for example range from a couple of hundred pounds to several thousand – the key is understanding which is the most appropriate fire for the customer, not necessarily the most expensive. What are you hobbies or past times? Having a business that is open seven days a week can seriously curtail any hobbies but on the rare chance I get, I love to play golf (still waiting on 2013’s first outing) Do you have a favourite product at the moment? My favourite products are the ones that sell! To be honest, the trick is having the right range of products to suite customers’ homes and lifestyles – what’s perfect for a family in a much-used sitting room may not be right in an apartment or cottage location. It’s about understanding the customer needs. Are there any plans for Fireplace Superstore to expand further? I’ve got lots of plans for the future of Fireplace Superstore, there are a number of channels we have only dipped a toe in so far. Watch this space! What are you doing this evening? International interior designer Anna Dodonova’s latest project, a contemporary family apartment located in a new building development in Knightsbridge, London, oozes style and glamour.

aced with a brief of changing the interior layout and making the space feel as spacious, Anna changed the apartment layout by completely opening the entrance area and installing a walk in wardrobe and guest bathroom. There is now an open-plan living and dining room space. With breathtaking views of London, The 300 square metres property is bathed with Anna’s love for light and bright shades of white and ivory and her signature style of blending contemporary design with timeless glamour. With the clever use of lighting and mirrors, Anna created the illusion of higher ceilings and larger rooms. The apartment is filled with

bright energy and a flow of light from room to room. The white and ivory colour palette is complemented by the use of accent colour accessories. Anna used shiny lacquered finishes on some of the surfaces and the best quality fabrics and leathers. From sand touch wallpaper and glass beads to fine studded curtains, the different textures featured throughout the apartment gives all the spaces depth and character. Anna points out that although each room has its own personality, “everything was designed in the same vein to ensure a harmonious balance was achieved”. Anna worked closely with the owners, from concept to delivering the finishing touches.

Entrance “It is important to make the entrance feel as inviting as possible as it sets the tone for the rest of the house. We made the entrance into a practical, open and bright space leading to the living room area. The large mirror which is also a clock, is a great statement piece and it reflects light making the entrance area feel and look wider. The sand textured wall paper with the vertical lines in the entrance area, corridor and the living room create the illusion of higher walls and ceilings. The white shiny textured ceramic floor tiles were laid out in diamond pattern as it also helps the room look bigger. The lights and lamps in the entrance highlights the furniture finishes and builds the atmosphere”. CHESHIRE LUXURY

The sofas are located in the middle of the room and face the fireplace making the space cosy and intimate. You can get a view of the whole room with the library located to the left and dining room to the right of the living room area. The cream leather sofas add to the light effect. The sofa design is practical and comfortable as the back can easily be adjusted for more back support. The coffee table has

an onyx table top finish which matches the sofa shade. Anna worked with stone to add another level of texture to the room. For the window treatment, Anna didn’t want to overload with too much fabric so she used just enough curtain to give the room the cosy yet light feel it has. Dining room and Kitchen The dining room is next to the kitchen and overlooks the whole living room. The glass dining table with matching dining chairs gives the space a clean and modern feel. Anna add’s “the idea was not to block the space but make it look as easy and light as possible”.

Master Bedroom The master bedroom is all about ultimate comfort and complete luxury. Anna’s vision was to make it a personal sanctuary but ensuring that style wasn’t compromised. The lights give the room just the right drama and mirrors widens the space. The soft textures and fabrics on the bed and carpet makes the master bedroom warm and inviting. Family Bedrooms Anna wanted to ensure that each bedroom was created with it’s own identity. Both rooms have slick lines and similar dressing tables but the different wallpapers and bed linen in each room gives both spaces it’s own personality. The luxurious and soft bed linen and curtains make the rooms effortlessly cosy. Details and Finishes: Anna kept it simple with special touches and the slick shiny chrome finishes throughout the apartment.

ngineers, marketing consultants, biochemists all use the design process. It is time honoured. Design incorporates philosophical discussion and scientific enquiry. Design includes time for research and reflection and the reabsorption of new data and ideas. Design can also embody the spirit of an age and cultural values. At its best it can improve the world and it can make things robust, easy to use and a pleasure, be that a building, a city or a spoon. It can provide those timeless ideas of Firmness, Commodity and Delight. And, I would add, a standard of excellence that no other process can match.

Design can also not only respond to context but has the magical ability to create context, by making objects, buildings and places that are really good of their sort. It can invent narrative and character and interest. Which, we might all subjectively agree, are good things because they make you feel better. With a little money and when imagination and human energy are in relative abundance, design can do this extremely well. Which means it has the ability to make a contribution to the sense of a place, which in turn 84

can enrich our experience of being in a place and lead us to spend time there and respect it. These are fundamental requirements of good ‘social’ sustainability.’ I’ve always instinctively felt and publicly maintained that good design – be it an AppleMac laptop, a great spoon or a great building – makes you feel like a better human being.
