WORDS AND STYLING: OLIVIA CANTILLON
Following the not-so-quiet summer period, the action level is poised to crank up a notch or two as we enter Q4 at full pace… It’s been a quarter of a century since Philippe Starck designed his first collection for Duravit – and also 25 years since British architect Brian Johnson opened the Godwin Austin Johnston (GAJ) practice in Dubai. Over the years GAJ has flourished and played a significant role in the development of the architecture and design sector in this region. Today, practices big and small seem to be running as quickly as they can to keep up with the upsurge in projects, fuelled by the excitement of mega malls-cum-mini shopping cities and, of course, Expo 2020. Preparations for the Expo will likely be very much on the agenda as we enter the last months of this year… The fever is running at an all-time high through the Marina and Al Sufouh districts as the final touches are being put to the Dubai Tram line, which, according to officials, is to open in November. Teams will certainly going to be working 24/7 if they are to achieve that feat. The tramway, which is the region’s first and another feather in Dubai’s cap, is years overdue and much-awaited by commuters and visitors alike, as it will provide some relief to traffic congestion and general inconvenience on that main stretch of road. The three Starwood hotels - the St. Regis, Westin, and The W being built on the Al Habtoor land in the space previously occupied by the iconic Metropolitan Hotel, are rising fast and the first of the trio, which will represent the W Hotel brand’s UAE debut, is expected to be open by the end of next year. Qatar was the venue for the first W in the region. New York designer David Rockwell, best known for his Nobu restaurant interiors and the Oscar award ceremony sets, is also gearing up to celebrate the 30th anniversary of his prolific studio. The milestone will be marked in this region with the scheduled opening of the first standalone Nobu at the Four Seasons in Doha, Qatar. Meanwhile, Rockwell Group is working in collaboration with Dhaliliyah Est. towards the completion of the interiors of the region’s first Nobu Hotel, scheduled to open in Riyadh in the first quarter of next year. Reportedly, the new destination will be distinguished by a blend of Nobu’s cutting-edge Japanese style and subtle references to the mystical landscapes of Arabia. Back in Dubai there is quite a buzz around the Hotel Show, which takes place at the Dubai World Trade Centre later this month. Always an elegant show with a better quality of exhibitor products than INDEX, this year’s edition promises to be worth attending in light of the ongoing interest in the hotel and hotel apartment sectors. The chic and exclusive new Bea e Martina boutique, (the retail arm of Luxury Visions) now open in the new Sunset Mall in Jumeirah, will be presenting its exquisite bed and bath linens and room fragrances. Belgium’s De Witte Lietaer, one of the prestigious bath linen companies represented by Bea e Martina, is also expected to be at the show. Fantini, the Italian firm responsible for the exquisite marble work at the Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque in Abu Dhabi, and who is beavering away to finish the Palazzo Versace Hotel and Residencies in Dubai, will also be present at the Hotel Show. It’s now time to pack and head for Maison et Objet, Cersaie and HOMI – and to the launch of the new Axor Hansgrohe faucets designed by Antonio Citterio, and the new jewellery collection from Baccarat. It’s bound to be another hectic design month…

A FInAL note
Modern designs embedded with cutting-edge technology continue to push the bathroom to front and centre. As the former washroom’s importance continues to dominate the domestic landscape, contemporary bathing areas are individually tailored, living room-like, amenity-driven wellness suites designed to nourish body, mind and soul. text: LISA VINCENTI

Far eastern design is very much about creating a space that both calms and uplifts, thus enhancing the user’s mental wellbeing. It’s no surprise, then, that bathroom designers are looking east for inspiration, creating products with Zen-like appeal. top marks go to Gessi’s new Cono collection by designer-sculptor Prospero Rasulo, whose use of graceful eastern shapes provides a cool counterbalance to the edgy Western influences that come through. the hands-down winner, however, is Kelly Hoppen’s stone composite Origami bath for Australian brand apaiser.
