Note from the Editor This month’s issue of Treasures features the Clara Barton Paper Doll. Clara Barton (December 25, 1821 – April 12, 1912) was the founder of the American Red Cross. As a teenager, she showed an early interest in helping others who were ill by caring for one of her brothers. At the age of 18 Barton became a teacher. After 15 years of teaching, Barton moved to Washington, DC to work in government. When the Civil War started in 1861, Barton brought supplies from her home to help wounded soldiers When she went to Europe in 1869, Barton learned of the Red Cross organization in Geneva. Upon her return to the United States, she led the effort to create the American Red Cross, which was formed in 1881. Barton was President of the American Red Cross for 23 years and she later founded the National First Aid Association of America, which concentrated on basic first aid and instruction and emergency preparedness.
