all is finally here. After a long hot summer, the weather has finally cooled off and being outside is actually inviting. This is a great time to get out of the house and be active. To help inspire you, we teamed up with Camp Rhino and the Las Vegas Legends soccer team to bring you two workouts in this issue. When I think fall, I think Joe Buda, Publisher cars. It may be because it is a great time to get out, put the top down and take a road trip. Automobiles are an integral part of our lives. Our cars serve as more than just transportation; they can also make a statement about who we are and who we want to be. Cars can invoke the imagination. They are capable of bringing out emotions inside of us. In celebration of the car, we are focusing more on automobiles in this issue. Take a peek inside the Barrett Jackson auto auction, learn more about Ford Mustang and get to know Danny Koker from “Counting Cars.” Cars are also fun to watch when they are racing. The Strip at the Las Vegas Motor Speedway is the place to be for drag race enthusiasts when the NHRA Toyota Nationals come to town at the end of October. We are excited feature drag racer Alexis DeJoria on the cover of this issue. DeJoria has an amazing job; she pilots an NHRA Nitro Burning Funny Car, a 10,000 horsepower land rocket, which is the quickest accelerating machine on the planet. She attended her first NHRA Championship Drag Race when she was 16 and was hooked. DeJoria vowed to someday be piloting her own Funny Car. She succeeded. The last time DeJoria was in Las Vegas she won the top spot. She will be racing again at the NHRA Toyota Nationals at the end of this month. With fall also comes football. That’s right, football season is back. If you are like me, you are managing at least one fantasy football team. In this issue, we get tips from the Las Vegas All Stars, a celebrity filled fantasy football league now in its third year. We spoke with the winners from the first two seasons in order to determine their secrets to success. Open up the window, get outside, be active and enjoy the cooler weather. There is no time like the present to embrace the “Fit, Bold & Better” lifestyle.

Exotics Racing: Making Dreams come True

W

By Jake Conlee

ho doesn’t love a good adrenaline rush? One visit to Exotics Racing at Las Vegas Motor Speedway can turn your entire day around with the photo ops, driving excitement and pure, all-out enjoyment. In just five years, Exotics Racing has made itself into a one-of-a-kind, state-of-the-art driving facility, ten minutes north of downtown at Las Vegas Motor Speedway. Brought to you by real race car drivers, everything at Exotics Racing is legitimately and unequivocally top-notch, with the true automotive enthusiast in mind. With an expansive 9 million dollar inventory including Lamborghini, Ferrari, Porsche, McLaren, Aston Martin, Audi, Mercedes, Nissan GTR and Chevrolet Corvette, there is something for everyone to choose their own Exotics Racing experience. Whether you want to drive one car, or all 15 cars, it is possible. Exotics Racing has set the bar very high for those visiting in Las Vegas or locals, who want the opportunity to thrash a supercar on the track. From their incredible reception center, vehicle display, track viewing and overall immersive supercar experience, the red carpet wouldn’t be enough to describe all of the treats from Exotics Racing. Which supercar do Las Vegas residents love? The Corvette has been the benchmark for the American supercar since its introduction in the mid-‘50s, and the newest version, the 2014 C7 Z51 Stingray is available at Exotics Racing. This incredible car, in a bright Velocity Yellow, is a world class drivers’ car. The driver’s seat is designed with the driver in mind, and cosseted speed is the theme in here. With its 455 horsepower 6.2 liter V8 and 6 speed paddle shift transmission, head up display and amazing pedal configuration, the Corvette Stingray at Exotics Racing is an excellent and extremely fun car to drive on the track. Vast acceleration, massive braking abilities, road-hugging handling and supportive drivers’ seat puts you in control of the Corvette Stingray, making you feel more skilled as the laps fly by. The day begins with a safety briefing and introduction to the events about to unfold. There is an emphasis on safety, and their track record (pun intended) is immaculate. Exotics Racing has a team of professional race car drivers to take you through your day as a fellow race car driver or spectator. With real time track experience, these drivers are from all realms of racing, drifting and performance driving tutelage. Listen to your instructors from start to finish, because once you are in the driver’s seat, the action happens very quickly, and the smallest misstep can end in an unsavory occurrence. Once out of the classroom, you are ushered out into the driver’s staging area, and then into the seat of a Porsche Cayenne for your “Sighting Lap.” These laps are for the instructors to familiarize you with the track layout and configuration. The track at Exotics Racing rivals some of the best tracks in terms of layout, challenge and all out speed. High speed turns, esses and off-camber turns are all thrown into the mix, testing the driver’s bravery, skill and mettle. I would highly recommend a day out at the track of Exotics Racing, as a whole family experience it is truly incredible. To be surrounded by such an incredible display of horsepower, speed, panache and automotive excellence, and to be attended to the way Exotics racing is absolutely magnificent and will be a day to remember for years to come. In some ways, Exotic Racing and what they offer in the way of pure adrenaline may very well be a life changing experience. For more info, visit exoticsracing.com 7

Barrett Jackson Las Vegas 2014: A Wonderland for the Automotive Soul

L

By Jake Conlee

as Vegas has always been a playground for the senses. Sights, sounds, smells, feelings and flavors are everywhere that you turn, and once a year the greatest showcase of automotive tastes comes to town, brought to you by Barrett Jackson. This spectacular of automotive expression is a concours’ de elegance among the American and international car enthusiasts. Las Vegas plays the perfect host, providing the most idyllically photogenic backdrop for an incredible event. The very finest in custom, classic, exotic and unique autos and memorabilia can be found under the expansive roof of the Mandalay Bay Event Center and Arena. Adding to the allure of Barrett Jackson is that not only are these breathtaking and enviable cars for show, but they are all for sale in one way, shape or form. “When there’s a bill, there’s a way…” Most of the vehicles will cross the auction block, which is placed at the near end of the arena. The red carpet here for the stars of the show is a plush black blanket of thick carpeting, leading up to the “Block.” Meticulously restored classic cars, race cars, exotic supercars, heavily modified custom cars and historical memorabilia all rumble, rattle and shake across this layer of black carpet, creating a surreal exhibition. The production that is Barrett Jackson is a gorgeous orchestra

to the visual senses, and when these rolling works of art start their engines, you can smell the high octane exhaust, feel the power as the low rumble hits you in the chest and the ground beneath your feet. The auction block is a fantastic show of commerce at its finest. The highest quality craftsmanship is rewarded or subjugated to financial reward or loss among automotive builders, enthusiasts and collectors. If a car sells as a No Reserve vehicle, there is no guarantee of profit in the sale, but will increase interests among the bidders and potential buyers. Some incredible deals can be found on Thursday and Friday morning, but after lunch on Friday, bust out the Black Card. There will be some early superstars, but about mid-afternoon on Friday, prices will climb into the six figures. These cars are the rarest of the rare, some are incredible works of customized automotive art, but most of these cars are the highly sought after muscle cars and historical rides that have been cherished, pampered and recognized as being the cream of the crop. Barrett Jackson rolls into Las Vegas, every year, typically on the final weekend of September, offering us Las Vegans a chance to see some really astonishing vehicles sold for some pretty astonishing prices. A must see for every Las Vegas Man, woman and child.

Ford Mustang Celebrates 50 Years of Driving Excellence with No. 1964 By Jake Conlee

T

here are few things in the world truly known as iconic and, simply put, the Ford Mustang sits at the forefront of this group of special incantations. In every country around the world, these two words—Ford Mustang—conjure up recollections of growling engine and a roaring exhaust. If not first hand, then the well archived history has laid out a V8 powered patchwork of racing, tradition and innovation for all to see. It’s been 50 years since the first iteration of the Ford Mustang rolled out of the FoMoCo factory doors in Dearborn, Mich. and excuse my saying so, but few things in the 20th Century have changed the entire face and fortitude of America, as the Ford Mustang. Possibly the timing, maybe it was America’s newfound love of motorsport, but the Ford Mustang ushered in a completely different era in regards to transportation and vehicle ownership. This is when the Big Three (Ford, Mopar and General Motors) really began to amass their individual followings. The Ford Mustang made the other big two have

to play a game of catch up, after the world’s first “Pony Car” proved to be a smashing success. To commemorate the 50th Anniversary of the Ford Mustang is a very exclusive, limited production celebratory version, simply called No. 1964. This is the very last number of the 50 Years Limited Edition in production, ending in No. 1964. Available with just four options: manual or automatic transmission, Kona Blue or Wimbledon White. This car is one of the few special editions, the limited numbered Mustangs ever made, that wasn’t a creation of Carroll Shelby, and truly a finished product from Ford directly in Dearborn. This is another thing that makes this Special Edition 50 Years Limited Edition Mustang very special, very exclusive and very uniquely American. Ford has fitted all the very highest in performance upgrades: uprated 5.0 liter developing 435 horsepower and equally burly 400-foot pounds of torque. Bringing all that oomph to a halt are a set of six piston Brembos bolted to 19 inch alloy wheels

LIFESTYLE

wrapped in Pirelli 255/40-19 tires. Ford’s intention and mission statement to make the 50 Years Limited Edition be the top performing Mustang available from Ford for 2015. Each limited-edition car features a plaque on the instrument panel engraved with a serial number and the signature of Ford Motor Company Executive Chairman Bill Ford. Everything about Mustang the 50 Years Limited Edition No. 1964 has been in the works at FoMoCo for the greater part of a decade. Sitting in No. 1964, it is very easy to see what the imagineers at Ford have been working on. Just a couple of years ago, with the re-introduction of the 5.0 Coyote engine, every automotive publication proclaimed that Mustang was a world-class, world-beating sports coupe. This special edition Mustang is simply a very forward, progressive evolution packaged within swoopy, bulging body lines, sitting on fat tires,

big Brembo brakes, all new suspension design and truly tuned exhaust. I covet the 50 Years Limited Edition No. 1964. I’ll have mine in Wimbledon White with a manual. Christmas is coming soon... The very final 50 Year Anniversary Mustang, No. 1964 was auctioned off during Barrett Jackson Las Vegas at Mandalay Bay Event Center on Sept. 27, with all proceeds benefiting the Edith and Benson Ford Heart & Vascular Institute, a branch of the Henry Ford Health System. The last of No. 1964 sold for an astounding $170,000. This spectacular price is a true recognition of the time, innovation, history and iconic status that this Ford Mustang has been building for 50 years. I would like to personally thank Timepiece Public Relations and Marketing and Jim Owens from Ford Motor Company for their time and attention in bringing this very special Mustang to Las Vegas and introducing Las Vegas Man to this very special piece of automotive history.

§ Hi Elaine, Should a man still pay for on the first date? Answer: I feel that the man should still pay for the first date. A woman can invite a gentleman for dinner at her home if she wants to show him that she likes him, or even get tickets to a play and invite him, but then he should take her somewhere after the play and PAY for that in reciprocation.

§ Hi Elaine, I was given tickets to a topless show. Is it okay to ask someone that you are casually dating? Answer: Absolutely not. Good Grief! What kind of message are you sending? Neither a man nor a woman should ever ask a date to a show like that unless you’re in an ongoing relationship. Ask a friend instead.

§ Hi Elaine, Is it okay to wear jeans on a date? That’s a difficult question to answer, but today jeans are acceptable everywhere. So if she puts on a fancy blouse and you wear a great shirt, you’re okay unless you’re invited to a black tie event. Depending on the places you go I think you’ll be fine.

§ Elaine Casale may be a sprite woman at 5 feet 1 inch at 108 pounds, but this matchmaking marvel will find you the love of your life faster than cupid can hit you with his red-hot arrow. Forget about going to New York where matchmakers number in the dozens or heading to Los Angeles for a meeting with the Millionaire Matchmaker; this modern day Yenta is Las Vegas’ best kept secret when it comes to the business of finding love and romance. Pahrump is Home to a Classic Las Vegas Steakhouse:

Stockman’s Steakhouse

S

By Jake Conlee

ome of us Las Vegas natives are constantly searching for something new and delicious. Classic hunks of charred meat are a long standing tradition in the history of dinner in Las Vegas. We love a good steak in Las Vegas, and sometimes are looking for a change of scenery. What restaurant can provide us with all of these things, while serving out of this world quality and equally gorgeous food? Stockman’s Steakhouse in the Pahrump Nugget is that restaurant. Offering sizzling USDA Choice steaks, fresh seafood, signature sides and an expansive wine list, Stockman’s is the perfect interpretation of a classic Las Vegas steakhouse with none of the pretension. The space is intimate, inviting and welcomes you in with the smells of broiled meats and the sounds of a live musician sitting at the piano while diners enjoy their meals. The appetizers are generous and flavorful. Large, succulent shrimp, accompanied by either a fresh lemon and spicy cocktail sauce with the Shrimp Cocktail or sautéed Shrimp Scampi in a savory butter sauce is a perfect pre-dinner compliment. Lobster bisque with a creamy base, hiding massive chunks of buttery lobster has the perfect balance of creamy and freshness and was a very pleasant surprise on the menu. The famous Wedge Salad was generous, exploding with flavor. Served on a beefsteak tomato, this wedge of iceberg lettuce covered in chopped bacon,

tomatoes, bleu cheese crumbles and dressing was definitely a wedge to remember. With steak comes seafood and this dinner was no exception. It was recommended by our incredible waiter, Dana, that we have the Alaskan King Crab Legs Oscar Style to accompany our steak selections. The crab legs are massive, meaty and fresh, and with the fresh lemon and clarified butter, they could have been a meal of its own. I love the crab, and I am sure that any seafood enthusiast would love it too. But then there are the steaks. A 16 ounce USDA Boneless Rib Eye cooked to a medium rare, with their signature blend of spices, was cooked to perfection. Undeniably tender and incredibly smoky, it is one of the best tasting, highest quality and biggest cuts of meat I can put to memory. The 10 ounce Filet Mignon is much larger than it sounds on paper, a sizable hunk of tender steak, the knife cuts through like proverbial butter. Unable to finish our meal in its entirety, Dana recommended that we package the remains of dinner in their state of the art take away containers. Take it from me, they are pretty awesome. Try Stockman’s Steakhouse at The Nugget in Pahrump. Go out and pay them a visit, it is a nice drive and well worth the time. For more information visit pahrumpnugget.com. 13

Que Syrah Syrah!

A

utumn is upon us, and as wine lovers look forward to all the upcoming culinary events—everything from sports viewing parties to the inevitable holiday feasts—we’ll be asking the same old questions: “What wine can I take to the party?” and “Which wines will pair well with the food I plan to serve my guests?” The standard answer to these questions is “Pinot Noir for red and a dry Reisling for white,” as these two varietals are the most versatile in pairing with a wide variety of dishes. But last fall I made a wine and food pairing discovery that was, for me, an epiphany. I was experimenting with a new chicken recipe that included white beans, carrots, celery, fresh Rosemary and Italian herbs. The combination of ingredients seemed very autumnal, so as my meal simmered in the slow cooker, I dashed down to my local boutique wine shop to find a suitable wine to pair with dinner. As I studied the copious options on the shelves, a word caught my eye: “Gigondas.” This wine is from the southern Rhone region of France and is a blend of Grenache-Syrah-Mouvedre (“Hold

By Keith Thompson

the MSG and pass the GSM!”). I had never tasted a Gigondas but I took a chance. Luckily, the wine was perfect. It wrapped around the herbs and flavors in my chicken/white bean dish in such a beautiful way that my guests and I were oo-ing and ah-ing between bites, amazed at how both the wine and food were enhanced and transformed as they came together in our mouths. Even though Grenache dominates in wines of the Southern Rhone, I consider Syrah to be the star of the Rhone blends. Most notably a Rhone varietal, Syrah is grown all over the world and expresses itself uniquely in each region. In Australia, Syrah is called Shiraz. The grape is the same, but the Aussie incarnation tends to be rich and jammy, and is a fun cocktail wine, often blended with Cabernet Sauvignon. In the Rhone, Syrah tends to be earthier and herbal, more suitable for pairing with food. Syrah is made all over California, but whereas Napa and Sonoma are the kings of Cab and Pinot, the Central Coast (i.e. Paso Robles or Solvang) make Syrah superbly. Syrah even finds a home here in Southern Nevada. The

vineyards at the Pahrump Valley Winery (Bill and Gretchen Loken’s growing wine mecca) are full of beautiful Syrah vines and Gretchen makes a glorious Syrah that will impress your guests! I highly recommend a trip to their winery for a fun wine-outing that will not disappoint. So, before you automatically buy the stock Pinot Noir, Reisling, Cabernet or Zinfandel for your fall food fests, consider a Syrah or a GSM blend. If your wine store has a decent French wine selection, I cannot extol enough the virtues of Gigondas, Cotes du Rhone or Chateauneuf-du-Pape. These blended wines of the Southern Rhone are meant to be part of a magical marriage with autumnal foods and anything made with the “Scarborough Fair” spices (Parsley, Sage, Rosemary and Thyme). If you prefer a white, d’Arenberg in McLaren Vale, Australia makes a wonderful Viognier/Marsanne blend (also Rhone grapes) called “Hermit Crab” that pairs beautifully with fresh seasonal herbs! These Rhone varietals will wow your friends and provide unexpected wine and food pairings that are simply sensational!

ALEXIS DEJORIA The Three Second, 320 Mile Per Hour Nitro Funny Car Pilot By Jake Conlee Photos by Alexis DeJoria Racing and Gary Nastase

lexis DeJoria, pilot of the 320 mile per hour, 10,000 horsepower Nitro burning Funny Car was very excited about her race weekend. DeJoria, from qualifying Friday at Maple Grove Raceway in Reading, Pa. was willing to share some time with us; a great introduction and a chance to bring us (and all of you) up to speed on the 2014 Mello Yellow NHRA Championship Drag Racing season. With the new season, came a new livery. The Patron Tequila Toyota Funny car had now changed from the very striking green and black, to a gorgeous matte black and purple finish, complete with a new sponsor (well kinda new): Patron XO Café. They celebrate their wins with a (now) very popular “Mosh Pit Win.” Having racked up three wins thus far in the Mello Yello NHRA Drag Racing season, now that she’s at a new high in her career, I wanted to take a chance to see where it all started. After attending her first NHRA Championship Drag Race as a fan when she was 16, DeJoria had caught “The Bug.” DeJoria was hooked. She told herself that one day, she would be at the controls of her own NHRA Nitro Burning Funny Car. It wouldn’t be until nine years later that she would actually make the move into NHRA Drag Racing and several more seasons until her dreams became a reality. Her daughter was one year old at

the time and DeJoria wanted to accomplish something that had been in the back of her mind; it was time to go racing. Beginning her exodus into NHRA Championship Drag Racing was less than glamorous; her first car was “a beat up Corvette Roadster on its last leg.” She was in the very popular 9.90 second Super Gas class, and after proving herself as a serious and competitive driver, it was only a matter of time until she progressed into an even faster and quicker class: Super Comp. This class is an 8.90 second thrill ride of some of the most beautiful and competitive dragsters. She speaks of her S/C Rail with great fondness and a definitive step up from that “beat up old Corvette.” Her Super Comp Dragster was a state of the art racing machine and helped to further her career into the next step: Top Alcohol Funny Car. Top Alcohol Funny Car is the premier Sportsman Class of NHRA. One step below the Nitro Burning Top Fuel Funny Cars, the Top Alcohol class is an unhinged, insane class of serious competitors campaigning their race cars all around the country. DeJoria made waves in the Top Alcohol Funny Car, gaining the only the second win for a woman in the Top Alcohol at a National event in 2011. After slugging it out across the country for five successful seasons with Top Alcohol Legend- Bob Newberry at the helm of the 21

crew, and a couple of horrific crashes, one in 2009 at Englishtown where the (near indestructible) Chromoly Tube Frame was bent into a vertical right angle just ahead of the driver’s seat; she would not be swayed and she would not be rushed. Alexis has an undeniable respect for the power and the difference that her next step would be: Nitro Funny Car. After putting herself through a year of testing, and fresh off her 2011 Northwest Fall Nationals win in TA/FC, she made her debut as the fourth member of the Kalitta Racing team at Texas, also in the fall of 2011. She and her team have been working long and hard through the past three seasons. DeJoria and crew picked up the magic wrench of Tommy DeLago to lead the way. The first two seasons in Nitro were definitely development seasons when speaking of the newly formed team. After a handful of Semi-Final finishes at Las Vegas (twice) and a hardfought Final Round appearance at Bristol, DeJoria and team kicked off 2014 in a huge way: by becoming the Quickest Woman in the History of Funny Car. At Pomona’s Winternationals in February, DeJoria ticked off a 3.997 second blast down the track, making her the only woman in the “3’s.” She didn’t win the race, but this achievement would soon be overshadowed by the results

in Phoenix and Las Vegas, and most recently, the NHRA US Nationals held in Indianapolis every summer. We covered her win here is Las Vegas, but to win the US Nationals is like winning the Super Bowl of NHRA Drag Racing. I had to ask what this win was like, and how it was different from the others. “I got up every morning and I was in a good place,” DeJoria added “It was peaceful and serene, I worked out in the gym to start the day and my whole family was there.” John Paul DeJoria, Jesse James and their kids were all there to witness the biggest race of the season, which Alexis DeJoria and the Patron XO Café Funny car cut through the field, capturing the “Wally” at the end of the race weekend at Indy.

22

Alexis DeJoria realizes that she is not a “One Man Army,” and gives almost all of the credit to her team. Alexis DeJoria’s humble approach is coming while in the midst of the Mello Yello NHRA Countdown, which is the equivalent of the playoffs, leading up to the final race in Pomona. She credits this year’s wins, semifinal appearances and number one qualifiers to the “Rhythm of the entire team, and we are not ok with losing. We are always building what we have worked so hard to accomplish in a very short time.” Alexis DeJoria continued, and said the success hasn’t gone to anyone’s head, “There is a fine line between being confident and cocky, and we stay humble for that reason. Even going into the finals at the US Nationals, it was just winning another round for us.” It just happened to be the most significant round of their time as an NHRA Top Fuel Funny Car team, resulting in a very dramatic final round win against John Force, in one of the closest races that anyone could imagine, with Alexis DeJoria’s 4.038 @ 310mph versus a losing 4.039 @319mph. “What Tommy and Glen (Crew and Car Chief, respectively) have achieved this year is incredible, and being at Kalitta Racing feels like home. Connie (Kalitta) has been in the sport longer than anybody and to be with Kalitta Racing is a dream come true. When people have a true passion for the sport, you tend to gravitate toward people like that.” Alexis DeJoria said that she is looking forward to coming back to Las Vegas for the Toyota Nationals at The Strip Las Vegas Motor Speedway this month. But there are a couple of tracks she still looks

forward to winning the “Wally” at that she hasn’t done. This weekend she is at the NHRA Nationals at Maple Grove Raceway in Reading, and says it is a beautiful setting, gorgeous surroundings and a very fast track. (Many NHRA records have been set here) and Pomona, Alexis DeJoria, her husband and father are all from Southern California, so to win here would be like winning at home. She also shared the opportunity to recap with us her season of very memorable wins. Phoenix was a special win because it was her first, and which she describes the win as “Totally left field, everything about the beginning of the weekend seemed wrong, conditions, the track, but things changed very quickly.” The Summit Nationals at Las Vegas was a special win because Patron is here, and it is a track that she and the team genuinely love coming to visit. The facilities and track are state of the art and the fan experience is great in Vegas. The US Nationals, for obvious reasons, and the fact that her whole family was there to witness the win added to the spectacular win to cap off the summer racing season, affectionately known as “The Big Go.” Las Vegas Man magazine would like to thank Alexis DeJoria, Kalitta Racing and Las Vegas Motor Speedway for taking the time, holding the races and being a great group of media partners. Come out to Las Vegas Motor Speedway for the Toyota Nationals Oct. 30-Nov. 2 to see Alexis DeJoria and the rest of the NHRA Mello Yello Drag Racing super stars storm down The Strip at Las Vegas Motor Speedway.

Las Vegas Legends Workout By Joe Buda // Workout by Dominic McGovern // Photos by Roger Bennett

S

occer is a rigorous and intense sport. It features large playing fields, extensive running and very few break periods. In order to play it at a high level, an athlete must possess strength, speed, agility and excellent conditioning. The workouts associated with soccer are brutal, but can develop elite athletes capable of taking on this sport. When looking at intense soccer workouts, Las Vegas Man spoke with Dominic McGovern from McGovern Sport and Fitness. McGovern is the strength and conditioning coach working with the Las Vegas Legends Major Arena Soccer League soccer team. McGovern works with an assistant, Ricky Barazza, a speed and agility specialist who

also specializes in soccer. The players work out with McGovern three times a week (Tuesday, Thursday and Sunday) for 90 minutes per session. During these sessions, the players perform a strength circuit as well as a speed circuit. The physical workout is designed to promote strength, speed, agility and explosiveness. There is also a mentality workout as well with guest motivational speakers, coaches and McGovern all working together to bring the team together with chemistry as well the mental aspect of the sport. The following are exercises performed during one of the Las Vegas Legends’ workouts. When performing these exercises and drills be sure to use the appropriate weight.

HEALTH

1. Basic Ladder Drill This benefits speed and agility. Go through the ladder as fast as you can. Ladder drills used for the workout include in-and-outs, laterals with two feet in each and one leg hops to work the fast twitch muscle fibers.

2. Suicide Drill This is a sprint and agility drill. It immediately follows the ladder drill. Be sure to sprint between cones. Touch the cone then go back to the first one. Touch the second cone then go back to the first one. Touch the third cone then go back to the ladder drill.

4. Weighted Sit Up This exercise helps a lot with building core strength. Perform a sit up with a weight. Make sure the weight goes above the knees each time.

3. Barbell Squat Press This is a strength and explosive exercise. It works the quadriceps, hamstrings and shoulders. Take a barbell and spread your feet. Keeping your eyes up, squat down and explode up, pressing the weight above your head.

5. Kettlebell Swings This is a full body exercise that improves athlete leg drive, core power and shoulder stability. Squat to 90 degrees with your arms straight in-between your legs. Drive the kettle bell up with arms remaining straight to an overhead position standing straight up.

SMACKTALK Two Fans, Sitting on a Couch, Talking Smack

W

By Joe Buda

hat do you get when you put two opinionated sports fans together? You get the sports show Smacktalk. “Smacktalk is where the hosts are real fans with real opinions sitting on a couch, talking smack,” Tony Gaglione said. The show features Gaglione and longtime friend Shawn Adams discussing the hot news in sports and nothing is off limits. “The hottest topics for us to cover are the controversial ones,” Gaglione explained. “Because that’s when the harsh opinions come out. And that’s what we like.” They have delved into Aaron Hernandez’s arrest for murder, Ray Rice and domestic violence, Adrian Peterson and the use of corporal punishment, the NHL strike and steroids in baseball. The idea for the show came four years ago from Gaglione’s wife. “Tina would laugh when hearing the two of us argue about sports all the time,” Adams recalled. “She said, ‘Hey, listening to you two is entertaining. Why don’t you guys do a show?’ And so we did.” Gaglione and Adams first show was broadcast in audio on a small internet radio station. In July 2013, they joined the Las Vegas Informer. “We moved up to having our show on the Las Vegas Informer site which offers both audio and video,” Adams said. “We have covered

everything from Las Vegas 51s baseball, Las Vegas Wranglers hockey, MMA fights and kickboxing.” The biggest series to date has been the daily updates provided of the 2014 World Cup. Smacktalk has grown beyond two fans sitting on the couch and has expanded into live events hosting events at Aces, Blue Diamond Saloon and Putters. Hosted by Gaglione and Adams, Smacktalk broadcasts live, holding trivia contests and beer pong tournaments. Gaglione’s favorite moment since starting Smacktalk occurred during their first live broadcast. “During our first live show, we started with ‘This is Smacktalk’ and everyone started to applaud,” Gaglione recalled. “We were thinking, ‘This is cool.’ We were smiling.” The hosts are also the new broadcasting team for the Las Vegas Legends indoor soccer team. The ultimate goal for the hosts is to get picked up by a major network. But Gaglione imagines their show staying true to itself, “Two fans, sitting on a couch, talking smack.” Smacktalk is posted on InformerTV on LVInformer.com. The show originally started airing on July 23, 2013 with over 90 episodes available to watch on demand. 26

The importance of sleep By Dr. Donald A. Ozello, DC

W

hy get a good night’s sleep? Sleep and rest are a necessary part of life. The body needs sleep to heal, grow and recharge. A good night’s sleep increases health in numerous facets. Sleep promotes healing, growing, memory, metabolism, energy and mood. Combine sleep with exercise and nutrition to live a healthy, fit and functional life. Do not underestimate the importance of consistent quality sleep. Nothing takes the place of a good night of sleep. Proper nutrition does not. Vitamins do not. Unhealthy sugar filled energy drinks sure don’t. Neither does caffeine. A good night of sleep is irreplaceable.

sex. There is no need to have a TV, sound system or computer in your bedroom. Maintain your bedroom as dark as possible during sleeping hours. The pineal gland is a small, endocrine gland located inside the brain. It functions to produce and release the hormone melatonin. Melatonin secretion is dictated by light. Increased levels of melatonin are secreted during darkness while decreased amounts are released during daylight hours. Melatonin functions to control circadian rhythms which are physical, mental and behavior patterns that roughly follow a twenty-four hour cycle. Sleeping in a dark room increases melatonin secretion which induces relaxation and sleep.

Body positioning: Proper sleep ergonomics are vital to waking up pain-free and loaded with energy. Find body positions that work best for you. Proper body positioning is essential to health, especially while sleeping. The average male spends one-fourth to one-third of his day sleeping. Sleeping on either side with a correctly sized pillow holds the neck and spine in a straight line. This neutral position lowers the possibility of waking up with neck pain or a headache. Increase the productivity of your sleep by utilizing correct sleeping postures.

Consistency: Be consistent with your sleep schedule. Go to bed and wake up at the same time every day. Having a regular sleep pattern makes it easier to fall asleep. Transition Periods: Give your body time to transition from activity to sleep. Just like the body requires time to warm-up before exercise, the body needs a calming period before sleep. Thirty minutes before going to bed turn off the television, take a shower and stretch. A clear mind and relaxed, clean body fall asleep quicker.

Mattress and Pillow: Find a comfortable, correctly sized pillow. Preferences of pillow and mattress type are individual. Just as one specific computer chair is not for everyone, one specific size or type of pillow is not for everyone. Work with your chiropractor or an experienced pillow salesperson to optimize your pillow search. The same is true for mattresses. Sleeping on a quality mattress that supports your spine and increases comfort is ideal.

Nutrition: Develop evening nutrition strategies that promote sleep. Eat lighter meals later in the day. Provide your digestive system ample time to digest your food before bed. High caloric meals and high fatty foods take longer to digest and should be avoided prior to bedtime. Utilize a dietary journal to determine individual nutritional strategies that work best for you.

Limited Sleep Time Stimulus: Keep your bedroom free of loud and bright electronics. The bedroom is for two activities: sleeping and

Energize yourself for the day ahead by getting a good night’s sleep. Recover from a tough day by sleeping soundly.

fall activities By Branden Collinsworth

F

all in Vegas offers families ample opportunities to go outside and get active for little or no money at all. Here are some of my favorite places:

which offers families the opportunity explore the valley’s vibrant history through interactive science and nature exhibits, botanical gardens, hiking, trails and live animal shows. With so many things to do it’s easy to spend an entire day there.

Sunset Park This 325-acre regional park is one of the most popular public parks in Southern Nevada. Activities available include walking trails, fishing, barbecue pits, sports courts, desert wildlife expeditions and wide array of other activities along with events held there throughout the season.

City of Las Vegas The city of Las Vegas offers a number of programs including Kids on a Winter Holiday with Tot Kamp (ages 4-5) and Kids Kamp (ages 6-11). The Winter Holiday program offers children and teens fun, fitness and adventure during the two-week vacation observed by nine-month schools during the last two weeks of December. Age-appropriate activities, including arts and crafts, games, sports and special events, keep participants busy in a safe, supervised environment.

Container Park Part of the newly designed downtown is an amazing and innovative place called Container Park. Old shipping containers have been reused and turned into dozens of restaurants, boutique stores, a huge treehouse that includes a 33-foot-tall slide, NEOS play system and much more.

Until next time, get out, get active and eat healthy. It’s that simple.

Springs Preserve Nestled in the heart of Las Vegas is the Springs Preserve,

It’s a lifestyle y’all.

fall’s call Fitness guide for the season’s change

F

By Sean Burton

all is here and that means all of your “Suns Out. Guns Out” tanks are about to hit the shelves and collect some dust. No worries, this is a good thing. This is the perfect opportunity for you to change your body and learn something new in the process. Keep this in mind. Brace yourselves. THE HOLIDAYS ARE COMING. This means you will want to dig into some holiday treats including Halloween goodies. So before you start lying to yourself and your friends that you’re going to be so good on your diet and your goals, let’s try a new approach. We’ll give you a few things to consider keeping your engine revving before the holidays hit. Try these and challenge yourself for a dramatic change.

1. Lift Heavy

Yes, I said it. Lift heavy. That means add sets, less reps and looking awesome in the process. This challenge will push your body to new limit which means it’ll be burning more calories during and after your workouts. Try adding 2-3 more sets to your exercise and taking your rep range to 6-10 reps. Keep form a priority. Please note that lifting heavy doesn’t mean: break your back, destroy your knees, dislocate your shoulders or end up on Awkward Gym Moments. Please keep form a priority

2. Change Your Cardio

Because of the diet violations, cardio is going to be a big player in keeping you from going overboard. While I’m sure you get a kick of jamming to Pearl Jam on the treadmill for an hour, that’s simply not going to cut it. I’m talking about some challenging cardio.

• Spin Class - Perfect if you’re in dire need of some nice legs and a wicked butt. • Boxing/MMA Class - earn how to kick ass while looking good. Sure, why not? • CrossFit - Controversial cult of fitness fanatics - yes I said it. CrossFit will take you to a whole new world faster than the magic carpet from Aladdin but here is something important if you choose to join the dark side. Make sure your instructors keep form a priority. If your instructor isn’t constantly talking about the importance of fundamentals, form and foundation then change instructors.

3. Supplements

Point B-adass a little quicker. Obviously stimulation products can be a concern but here are a few things to utilize to keep it trimmed up. • Green Tea • CLA • L-Carnitine • Flaxseed Oil • L-Arginine Try these few things during the season and you won’t have to look for a XXL “Suns Out. Guns Out” tank when summer comes calling. As always, if you ever have any doubt or concern, talk to a trainer. How can you tell if he or she is good? If he/she doesn’t take form, foundation and fundamental as priority, don’t hire them.

If you’re serious about your workouts, but not solid on your diet and not taking supplements then you need to change. These products are meant to get you from Point A-wesome to

Claire Sinclair: Much More than a Pin-Up By Jake Conlee // Photo by Jerry Metellus

C

laire Sinclair, star of “Pin Up” at the Stratosphere Casino, Hotel & Tower, would be recognized as a Las Vegas headliner and Playmate of the Year 2011. Her billboards for “Pin Up” have become part of the Las Vegas backdrop and Sinclair is very grateful and humbled to be a part of it. As for the transition from Playboy’s Playmate of the Year to Las Vegas headliner, she admits that it had a lot to do with right place, right time. “Playmate of the Year was very interesting, for the whole year, we travel around the world and promote Playboy at different events. I worked as hard as I could for the year, promoting like crazy.” During that time, she was asked to guest star in “Crazy Horse Paris” and she jumped at the chance. “I wasn’t a performer or anything, but I saw the great guest stars they’ve had before, like Dita Von Teese, and I figured why not? I loved it, I had such a great time, and everything started from there.” Sinclair recalled how it all came to fruition. “For my 21st birthday, I was going to make an appearance at a club here in Las Vegas, and I was invited by a friend to see the Frankie Moreno show beforehand. Frankie (Moreno) pulled me aside at the meet and greet after his show.” Sinclair continued, “He asked me right there if I would like to headline a 1950s style Las Vegas pin up show. Within a week, I was getting emails with all the releases and contracts, it was crazy. The show was already made and in post-production, all that was missing was me.” She was right, they were right; Sinclair is a perfect fit for “Pin Up.” When asked what Sinclair looks for in a man, her answer was awesome. “I really can’t say what it is physically, because the men that I have liked are weird lineup of people with very little similarities, I guess that it could be anyone, but there is something that is very important. A man has to be interesting, eccentric and confident. I like someone that is completely off the cuff, a different personality that takes me a while to figure out, because they’re so unique. That’s what’s most important to me.” So where does a Las Vegas headliner go in her downtime? “I live on the Strip, so I try to spend as little amount of time here that I can. I go to Mt. Charleston, I visit Red Rock Canyon, or I’m hanging out with my friends at their houses in Summerlin or Henderson. For a year, I felt like I never left the Strip, so it’s nice to escape it from time to time. I visit my family every week in California, so I spend a lot of time driving my car, which I love.” When asked what she drives, Sinclair beamed about her car, “It’s an Audi S4. I seem to get in a bit of trouble, I have a lead foot.” Sinclair is thrilled about her reception in Las Vegas, with the production of “Pin-Up” at the Stratosphere and just out around town. “I seriously have the life I’ve always wanted right now. I have the dream job, live in an awesome place, the show is going well, and my family is the biggest cheer section that I have. I couldn’t be happier.” Sinclair was an amazing person to speak with, and as a Las Vegas star, she is a surprisingly candid. Make sure and catch her show, “Pin Up” at the Stratosphere, and if you’re ever fortunate to see her around town, make sure you say hi. Claire Sinclair is an awesome person to meet. Cars and Coffee Las Vegas: Everyone is Welcome By Jake Conlee

L

as Vegas has an undeniable track record of sneaking things under the radar of its inhabitants. Every Saturday morning since June 2008 something has been happening in a parking lot on Eastern Avenue that is very special and virtually unknown. Cars and Coffee was a tradition of mine when I lived in Southern California, getting up very early on Saturday mornings, making the trek to Crystal Cove and overlooking the Pacific Ocean in a particularly swanky parking lot of a particularly swanky shopping center. Why would I make this journey so early, typically to be cold and damp on a Saturday morning? I did so for the wonderful, exotic, classic and iconic cars. All marques were a tour de force of the automotive world and each more spectacular than the last. After three successful years, they had not only expanded to the Ford Complex in Irvine, but now they were branching out to Las Vegas. We love our cars here in the valley and as a true enthusiast it is our job to showcase our cars to the public. Perhaps not as extravagant as the Southern Orange County version of Cars and Coffee, Las Vegas’ version definitely has some really incredible horsepower on display. Every week, Cobras, Mustangs, Mopars, Corvettes, Camaros Imports, British classics and the occasional supercar come out to play. Rows of street rods, race cars, cafÊ racer motorbikes and desert crawling off roaders occupy a parking lot on Eastern and Richmar avenues in Henderson. Freshly brewed coffee, a happy crowd of spectators and owners mingle and celebrate each and every one of the vehicles found in the lot. Come out and see some really amazing cars, for free, every Saturday from 7 to 10 a.m. at 9500 S. Eastern Ave., just south of Interstate 215 and Eastern Avenue. Mountain Falls Golf Course in Pahrump, a true hidden gem

L

By Jake Conlee

as Vegas loves golf. We have a long standing tradition of having some of the finest golf courses found in the Southwest portion of our country. Mountain Falls Golf Course in Pahrump, located just a 50 minute drive from Las Vegas, seems a world apart from the busy Valley. The centerpiece of the Mountain Falls community, the golf course is absolutely breathtaking in its setting, facilities and course layout. Each hole, the driving and putting ranges and the parking lot have a panoramic view of Charleston Peak and the Spring Mountains. For golfers, this next bit of info is very important: they only have to overseed ONCE per year, and this means that for almost 100 percent of the time, you will have a very optimal playing surface. Mountain Falls Golf Club takes great pride in its immaculate course. Speaking with golf-pro and manager Jason Pomroy, Mountain Falls is a very unique golf course in regards to its history, creation and becoming a destination location for excellent Las Vegas golf. The grass is lush and meticulously kept by a very hard working and proud

maintenance crew. It is gorgeous, the water hazards are clear and there are massive bass swimming about. Young trees line the fairways; the terrain is varied with blinds and doglegs. Strategically placed bunkers and hazards make it a fun and challenging course to play. Offering spectacular deals for Nevada residents, the green fees are never more than $70, and for a course of this caliber, it is well worth it. My parents are avid golfers, and have been coming to Las Vegas for 30 years, and when asked about the experience, they said, “This was the finest golf course that we have been to and played at here in Las Vegas by far. We had a great time, Jason was amazing, and we both had breakfast burritos from the Grill Room for less than $10. We will definitely go back again. My parents aren’t easy to please, so this is quite a statement from avid golfers that come to Las Vegas six times per year and golf. Give Mountain Falls Golf Club in Pahrump a visit, you will truly appreciate all it has to offer in the way of a complete and immersive golfing experience. Fantasy Football Tips from the Las Vegas All Stars By Joe Buda

F

all is here and that means football. Chances are you, or someone you know, are in a fantasy football league. For fantasy football tips we looked to the stars—the Las Vegas All Stars. The Las Vegas All Stars Fantasy Football League is in its third season this year. The league, organized by X107.5 FM “Dave, Mahoney & DK” morning show co-host Daena Kramer, features twelve celebrity teams playing to win for their chosen charity. The league was started as a way to give back and have some fun. “We just wanted to get more roots into the community and partner with other media members and other pillars of the community,” explained Kramer. The league has gotten bigger each year. The first year, every participant donated either $500 or a day of service to the winning celebrity’s charity. Last year, Dina Mitchell, owner of Tropical Smoothie Café at the time, and Austin “Chumlee” Russell, co-star of “Pawn Stars,” each donated $5,000 to the winning charity. According to Mitchell, last year’s winner, her success was due to planning and research. “I tried to stay ahead. I looked at the games coming up, three or four games. I looked at my matchups and tried to figure out how I can be best matched. I literally studied, every single week.” Pro BMX bike rider and television personality Ricardo

Laguna won the first year. Laguna attributes his success that year to technology. “They have an app where you can press a couple of buttons and, if you are doing terribly, you can do a 180,” Laguna said. “That is kind of what happened in the first year. Kramer has these tips for participants. “Download an app. That is the best way to do fantasy football this day and age. Also, strategize and plan ahead. Plan for your bye week.” Popular apps include NFL and ESPN Fantasy Football. As the season goes on, and players get injured, it is necessary to make changes to your team. Fox 5 News anchor Jason Feinberg advised, “You have to pray every night your guys don’t get injured. You have to trust your instincts with a younger player. Now is the time to take a chance on the second stringer who’s going to be coming in because your guy just got injured.” Dave Farra, X107.5 “Dave, Mahoney & DK” morning show co-host, offered this advice on picking up players. “Drink a lot before hand and then those decisions on who to pick won’t weigh on you. It will be a more natural experience.” UFC mixed martial artist Forest Griffin jokingly recommended, “Watch ‘The League.’ I don’t know if it will help you with fantasy football, but it is a good show.” Taking the advice of the Las Vegas All Stars may help you go from fantasy football dud to stud.

The participants are playing for the following charities: Kramer for Heaven Can Wait Animal Society, Farra for Candlelighters, Jason Mahoney (X107.5 morning show co-host) for Friends of Las Vegas K-9, Feinberg for ASPCA, Chumlee for Communities in Schools, Griffin for ThreeSquare Food Bank, Dana and Kim Wagner (KSNV News 3 co-hosts) for Nathan Adelson Hospice, Laguna for Jump For Joy Foundation, T.J. Lavin (pro BMX bike rider) for Athlete Recovery Fund, Mayors Carolyn and Oscar Goodman for Miracle League, Doug Kezerian (ESPN SportsCenter) for Memorial Fund / USC Law and Mitchell for Boys and Girls Club. Mitchell is also providing the charity donation for the league. 44

MOVERS & SHAKERS

DANNY KOKER I

By Jake Conlee // Photo courtesy of Danny Koker

t’s not too often when a conversation can truly speak to your soul, but the time spent speaking to Las Vegas’ very own Danny Koker was an experience that I will remember for years to come. Of course, the star of the successful History Channel show, “Counting Cars,” Danny Koker has come to the forefront of television and entertainment in Las Vegas. Known as a longtime Las Vegas local, Danny Koker moved to Las Vegas when in middle school and graduated from Valley High School, returning in 1988 to work with Channel 33, and has been contributing to the local community with his larger than life persona ever since. Growing up with his family in Cleveland and Detroit has forged Danny Koker into the man we know, the man that loves music, motorcycles and cars, in that order. His father, whom shares the namesake, Daniel Koker, Sr., was a longtime Ford Motor Company executive and nationally renowned musician, who received an opportunity to perform in Las Vegas when Danny Koker was young, and the rest is a long, storied history. Speaking with Danny Koker, you can hear the love, respect and humility that he feels for Daniel Koker, Sr., whom he credits to be the driving force behind the Danny “The Count” Koker that we all know and love. Possibly his upbringing with gospel and soul music, his father’s family involvement with the automotive industry, and his family life is why the goodness that he exhibits on “Counting Cars” is true to life. Danny Koker has the natural ability to make you feel at ease and comfort with the stories and regales the pleasures in life here in Las Vegas, back in the Midwest with his family and his experiences of the people whose lives he has touched. Danny Koker attributes his recent success with “Counting

Cars” on History Channel to his longtime friends, the Harrisons, of “Pawn Stars.” Danny Koker is happy and humbled by the worldwide attention that “Counting Cars,” receiving requests for Count’s Kustoms motorcycles and cars from here in Las Vegas and quite literally from all around the world. “Insanely busy and completely awesome,” said Danny Koker. He still finds time and loves cruising around the Las Vegas Valley and surrounding communities looking for vehicles, projects and opportunities to make something really awesome in his shop, or make a difference in Las Vegas. Along with owning Count’s Kustoms, is his rockin’ venue Count’s Vamp’d (6750 W. Sahara Ave.) in which he takes great pride because of his love for music, creativity and the local Las Vegas community. Count’s Kustoms and Count’s Vamp’d Rock Bar and Grill employ real Las Vegas locals, and Danny Koker contributes directly to local economy and job market. His love for Las Vegas is very obvious, and he recognizes what a great city it has become since the time he first arrived. Count’s Kustoms has been around for the greater part of 17 years, pre-dating the television show, and been doing strong business ever since. His love of music came to fruition with Count’s 77, which Danny Koker refers to as a ‘70s inspired hard rock band. Currently, they can be found touring the country each weekend and with their second album in production with Schrapnel Records, they are no joke. Danny Koker is very passionate about this project, and having seen a couple of their videos, they are a very talented group of rock musicians with a true love for the music they play. A special dedication to Daniel Koker, Sr., for without you, sir, none of what we know as Danny “The Count” Koker would be accomplishing what he is doing for Las Vegas and beyond. 48

MEIR COHEN F

By Tony Gaglione // Photo by Roger Bennett

ourteen years ago Meir Cohen opened Las Vegas Indoor Soccer for locals to play in organized leagues. Almost immediately, Cohen decided he wanted his men’s team to have some competition. Cohen formed the Las Vegas Knights playing in the Premier Arena Soccer League, which is the amateur rank of indoor soccer competition. In their first year as a PASL team, Cohen led the Las Vegas Knights to the National Championships in Tijuana, Mexico. After developing solid young talent, Cohen took the Knights to the league championship for three consecutive years. The PASL formed a pro league and reached out to Cohen about joining. At the time Cohen didn’t think the team had enough history to join the professional ranks. After two national championships with the Knights, Cohen took his son to a Los Angeles Galaxy game and his son asked, ‘’Dad, why don’t we have a pro team in Las Vegas’?” Cohen simply responded, “We will.” With that goal, Cohen developed and named the professional team the Las Vegas Legends. The first year the Legends held an open tryout to add to the players from the Las Vegas Knights that were joining the Legends’ franchise. Over one hundred fifty players attended. The Las Vegas Legends won their division the first two years but lost both years in the final four playoffs, once in overtime. However, Cohen knows that his team has the right stuff and is looking to a successful season. Las Vegas Man magazine had a chance to sit down with Meir Cohen to ask him a few questions. Las Vegas Man magazine: You decided to step away from coaching. What made you make that decision? Meir Cohen: Last year I wasn’t planning on coaching. We

hired a coach but his dynamics with the team wasn’t there. Right before our first preseason game last year, the players didn’t trust him so I decided to take the role myself; we had a great season and won our division. I know my role was not to be coaching and that I needed to concentrate more on the business side. So we hired a great local coach in Doug Borgel. LVM: How do you feel that coach Borgel is the right fit for the Legends? MC: He is a Las Vegas local who has been here over twenty five years and he’s always been on a winning team as a college player and an indoor player with the Dust Devils, the team he won a championship. I feel he has the credibility and personality that can lead the guys. LVM: Do you think you will have the same outcome now in Major Arena Soccer League with the addition of six new teams? MC: It’s going to be much tougher. I’m hoping to get the same result but know it’s going to be a tough first season in the league. Teams are getting stronger and now as the defending division champion we have a target on our backs. It’s going to be a much tougher challenge but that’s why we play the game, we are here to win. LVM: Do you see any difference in play when you change from The Orleans to Las Vegas Indoor Soccer? MC: Being a new team we don’t have much experience playing in large arenas. However we are in the professional rankings and have had some success beating Ontario and San Diego in their home arenas. We are really hoping that with the support of the fans here in Las Vegas and with the great arena at The Orleans, we can really have a large home field advantage when we play there. 49

CASEY FLAIR I

By Joe Buda // Photo by Roger Bennett

t was 10 years ago that Casey Flair, Director of Empowerment Programs at the Goodie Two Shoes Foundation, took a risk and moved to Las Vegas from Alaska to walk on the University of Nevada, Las Vegas football team. He did not have a scholarship, and only had enough funds for one semester. He had to make football work in order to stay in Las Vegas and get an education. He knew his only way to make the team was to work hard. He was rewarded for this work ethic when his head coach, John Robinson, gave him a full scholarship. “Hard work, dedication and perfecting your craft pays off,” Flair explained. “Coach Robinson giving a speech in front of the team that UNLV was giving me a scholarship is one of my favorite memories at UNLV. It changed my life.” Flair became one of the most consistent players on the team. He never missed a game and had at least one reception in each of them. He finished his career at UNLV with 202 receptions for 2,380 yards. One game stands out in Flair’s mind. In 2006 the UNLV played the Air Force at Sam Boyd Stadium. In attendance was his old pop warner team, the East Anchorage Eagles. The game was an offensive shootout, one that UNLV won. During the game, Flair had 100 yards receiving and one touchdown. Flair began working at the Cambridge Recreation Center during his time at UNLV and always enjoyed working with kids, “due to the fact that you have the ability to affect young people’s loves positively.” After college, Flair played professional football for the United Football League’s Las Vegas Locomotives. According to Flair, playing for the Locomotives gave him

many great experiences. “I was the only rookie on the team,” Flair recalled. “I was able to play football with J.P. Losman and Tim Rattay.” His head coach for the Locomotives was former-NFL coach Jim Fassel. After playing for a season with the Locomotives, Flair found himself giving back to the community by working with organizations that help kids. He began his career as program director for After School All Stars, a program dedicated to assist students by providing them the tools they need for a successful future. Flair is now with Goodie Two Shoes, a foundation that has provided over 10,000 pair of new shoes to disadvantaged children and children in crisis. His role at Goodie Two Shoes is varied, from helping in the warehouse to assisting in finding community donors. “We all do a little bit of everything,” Flair explained. “We are four people, but are strong.” One aspect of Goodie Two Shoes that Flair enjoys is giving the gift of choice. The kids are able to choose their own shoes. “This is the first time a lot of these students have been given the opportunity to choose anything,” Flair explained. “I am blessed to be able to meet people in Las Vegas who want to give back to the community,” Flair remarked. “Now I get to work with kids who do not have a lot of male influence, such as a father figure or a male role model.” Casey Flair took a risk when he moved to Las Vegas and now demonstrates that he is a true mover and shaker in Southern Nevada. EIGHT THINGS YOU CAN DO TO MAXIMIZE YOUR RECOVERY FOLLOWING A

MOTORCYLE ACCIDENT By Paul Padda

Our system of justice compensates victims of negligence through monetary compensation. While injuries can have long term consequences that cannot fully be monetized, our legal system is designed only to place a dollar value on injuries and compensate victims financially. By knowing that similar cases can have dramatically different results, it is very important to do everything you can to obtain full value for your damages. Like most things in life, organization and documentation is the key to obtaining a successful result.

5.

The following are some tips to help increase your recovery if you’ve been the unfortunate victim of a motorcycle accident resulting from another person’s negligence:

6.

1. Medical Attention: If you are injured, see a doctor right away. While this might seem like obvious advice, you’d be surprised how many people fail to see a doctor following an accident because they think they “feel ok” only to later experience symptoms of a significant injury. Insurance companies like to make the argument that because the injured party did not seek medical treatment immediately, either they’re not really that injured or the injuries they’re claiming were caused by some other event or condition. 2. Photographs: Photos of your motorcycle, the vehicle that caused the accident, scars caused by the accident and pictures of you in a hospital bed all convey a powerful narrative. A picture is worth a thousand words as they say and, in the field of personal injury law, it can add thousands of dollars to the value of your case. 3. Timing: A quick settlement is not necessarily always a good settlement. You should never settle a personal injury claim until you’ve reached a point of “permanent and stationary status” which simply means you have plateaued medically and will not need further treatment. 4. Document Wage Loss: Make sure you provide your attorney

7.

8.

with pay stubs before the accident so that he or she can make a powerful wage loss claim on your behalf if you’ve had to miss work. On this point, the medical opinions of your treating physician can be very helpful if he or she believes you will be limited in the future in your ability to work. Make sure opinions of that kind are properly documented in your medical records. Document The Value Of Your Bike: If your bike is totaled and the insurance company tries to lowball you, as they often do, be prepared to demonstrate how much your bike is truly worth by using online reports, quotes from reputable dealers and any other documentation establishing the bike’s value. Save Your Receipts: Any expenses incurred following your accident can form the basis for your damages claim. Thus, receipts documenting repairs, pharmacy bills or anything else you’ve been required to spend money on following the accident is compensable. Be The Best Version Of You: If your case ends up in litigation and you’re required to submit to a deposition, you want to ensure that you come across as likeable and someone a jury can feel sorry for. Be personable, honest and forthright. Choose The Right Attorney: Finding a lawyer that understands the unique aspects of motorcycle accident claims is very important. It can make a huge difference in your ability to receive just and fair compensation. Paul S. Padda, Esq. is the managing partner of Cohen & Padda, LLP (CAPLawyers.com), a law firm focused on representing injured people. A former federal prosecutor, Padda has over a decade of extensive litigation experience. He holds degrees from the University of Chicago, Oxford University, The London School of Economics and the University of Illinois.
