A Positive Outlook

Understanding the Why

Our nation’s economy has grown for 125 consecutive months, the longest expansion in United States history. This Great Expansion, however, has been tepid. It is not only the nation’s longest expansion; it is also its slowest. This has led to a fair amount of skepticism relative to the sustainability of our current growth trend. Experts routinely tell us that a recession is just around the corner. Sooner or later I suppose they will be right, but their track record is only slightly better than that of the Buffalo Bills in the Super Bowl or Susan Lucci at the Emmys. In fact, a recent International Monetary Fund working paper found that a consensus of private-sector economists correctly predicted only five out of 153 recessions across 63 countries, nine months in advance of downturn, between 1992 and 2014. For the mathematically inclined, they got it right about 3.3 percent of the time.

to quality healthcare remains such a challenge in our community, ask a doctor (low Medicaid reimbursement rates, limited graduate medical education). If you want to understand why homelessness is on the rise, even during a period of relative economic prosperity, ask a social worker (untreated mental illness, drug addiction, systemic poverty). Some of the most meaningful insights I have ever received relative to our community’s economic potential have come from patrol officers, paramedics, front desk workers, food servers, cab drivers, flight attendants and construction workers. These, and countless other frontline experts, experience the unvarnished reality of our economy every day.

Last year, a senior economist with the Federal Reserve Bank of Philadelphia published a paper entitled Why Are Recessions So Hard to Predict? Random Shocks and Business Cycles in which he concluded, “Economists are like doctors, not soothsayers. They can’t predict recessions, but they can help us understand why one is happening. And that can make all the difference for policymaking.” Precisely. Understanding why can help us narrow the space between information and action. Understanding why can help us make better economic decisions that can prevent or delay future economic downturns. And, understanding why can help us better prepare for the inescapable realities of the business cycle. Too often, we focus on what is happening and completely ignore why it is happening. This can lead to misguided, stopgap solutions that concentrate on alleviating a symptom rather than eradicating the virus. I would respectfully submit that better understanding why also requires us to expand our definition of “expert” and to rediscover the lost art of listening. If you want to understand why so many of our schools are failing, ask a teacher (morale, overcrowded classrooms, no curricula, reform fatigue). If you want to understand why access

Jeremy Aguero, Principal Analyst

Economists have proven time and again that no one can see the future. Our best opportunity for sustained progress and prosperity is not to react to prognostication – positive or negative – but rather to monitor the pulse of our community; to harness the wisdom of our collective experience and expertise; and to take deliberate, thoughtful actions aimed first at preserving our strengths and then addressing our challenges at their root.

a key role in both the $1.8-billion Raiders Stadium Project and the $1.4-billion Las Vegas Convention Center Renovation and Expansion Project. STEVE HILL Chief Executive Officer/ President Las Vegas Convention and Visitors Authority For more than three decades, Steve Hill has had a hand in building the economy in Las Vegas. From literally helping build the casinos on the Strip to attracting new businesses to the area to helping pave the way for major league sports in Southern Nevada, Hill has left his mark on Las Vegas. As the CEO and President of the Las Vegas Convention and Visitors Authority, he will continue to have a hand in growing the local economy by driving more tourism to our destination. Originally from Ohio, Hill moved to Las Vegas in 1987 to start Silver State Materials, a concrete, sand and gravel supplier that grew to one of the largest in the country. Silver State was purchased by CalPortland in 2008, where Hill served as a Senior Vice President until 2011. During his time with Silver State and CalPortland, Hill was active in the community, serving as Chairman of Service 1st Bank of Nevada, Chairman of the Las Vegas Chamber of Commerce, and Commissioner on the Nevada Commission on Economic Development, and Chairman of the Boys & Girls Clubs of Las Vegas. In 2011, Hill’s work in economic development led to his appointment as the Director of the newly established Governor’s Office of Economic Development (GOED) by Governor Brian Sandoval. During his tenure, GOED lured numerous businesses to the state, including such high-profile companies as Tesla, Apple, and HyperloopOne. Governor Sandoval also tapped Hill to serve as the Chairman of the Southern Nevada Tourism Infrastructure Committee which led to the approval of both the $1.4 billion expansion and renovation of the Las Vegas Convention Center and the $1.9 billion Las Vegas Raiders stadium projects. He was subsequently appointed by the Governor to serve as Chairman of the Las Vegas Stadium Authority and as a member of the Southern Nevada Sporting Event Committee to help attract high-profile events to Las Vegas when the stadium is completed. In 2018, Hill assumed the role of President/COO and then that of CEO and President of the Las Vegas Convention and Visitors Authority, continuing his work to have a positive impact on the economy

of Southern Nevada by promoting tourism to the destination. Hill oversees the day-to-day operations of the organization, including operation of the Las Vegas Convention Center, finance, and the expansion and renovation project. Hill has also served as a member of the Nevada Savings and Government Efficiency (SAGE) Commission, the Clark County Growth Task Force, the RTC Regional Fixed Guideway Citizens Advisory Committee, the Clean Water Coalition, the Legislative Interim Advisory Committee on Air Quality, and as Chairman of the Governor’s Construction Liability Task Force. He earned a Bachelor of Science degree in mechanical engineering from RoseHulman Institute of Technology in Terre Haute, Ind. Hill and his wife Molly have three adult children and are 31year residents of Las Vegas.

ONE GENETIC TEST, A SECOND LEASE ON LIFE. Healthy, active and loving life as a husband and father. That was Michael’s world. But there was a genetic condition lurking inside that would lead to surgery for a severely blocked artery. Through genetic testing, it was revealed Michael had both types of genes that cause heart attacks. Enlightened and energized,

Michael is taking on the condition – as he always has in life – with everything he has. Including, of course, the love of his family. As Michael says: “I strongly encourage everyone to get genetic testing. It saved my life and will probably save my children’s lives.”

The Southern Nevada Forum Recommences in 2020 In 2013, legislators of Southern Nevada joined with the Las Vegas Chamber, the City of Las Vegas, business organizations, stakeholders and concerned citizens to form the Southern Nevada Forum. On Thursday, Jan. 30, the Southern Nevada Forum will begin planning for the 2021 Legislative Session, at 8 a.m. in the Las Vegas City Council Chambers. Attendance is open to the public, but registration is required and can be found at southernnevadaforum.org under the Upcoming Meetings tab. Legislators saw the value of such a coalition to better represent the many aspects that build the community of Southern Nevada. The Las Vegas Chamber was able to facilitate the effort and gather stakeholders with its extensive network as the largest and broadest businessbased organization in Nevada. The forum meets each biennium to determine regional priorities for the upcoming legislative session including K-12 education, higher education, transportation and infrastructure, economic development and workforce, healthcare and good governance. Each of these topics will receive a bi-partisan committee chaired by a member of each of the four legislative caucuses with the Senate Democrats and Republicans, and the Assembly Democrats and Republicans. Together the caucus representatives work with the stakeholders who are present in the meetings and will ultimately develop bill draft requests to pass through arduous process that is the 120 days of the Nevada Legislature. Since its formation, the Southern Nevada Forum has been instrumental in securing the full requested funding amount for the UNLV School of Medicine, as well as fuel revenue indexing to update and modernize transportation in Southern Nevada. The forum has also ensured that Southern Nevada is well represented as the population center of Nevada by obtaining additional seats on board and committees. Finding additional resources to increase Nevada’s share of Federal tax dollars has also been a priority of the Southern Nevada Forum. We are thankful to have effective leadership for the upcoming forum with bi-partisan co-chairs who can

reach across the aisle to create common sense ideas for legislation, with a stamp of approval for the Southern Nevada Forum. In the Committee on Education, legislators will tackle issues relating to K-12, as well as higher education. The years of experience from the co-chairs provide confidence in the committee with Senators Joyce Woodhouse and Scott Hammond, along with Assemblywomen Brittney Miller and Melissa Hardy. Transportation and infrastructure will continue to work toward ways to meet our renewable energy portfolio goals. This committee is stacked with Senators Chris Brooks and Scott Hammond, along with Assemblymen Howard Watts and Glen Leavitt. Strong leadership will be chairing the Committee on Economic Development and Workforce with Senators Nicole Cannizzaro and Keith Pickard, along with Assemblywoman Sandra Jauregui and Assemblyman Tom Roberts. This committee will face the enormous challenges of continuing to prepare Nevada’s economy for tomorrow. A depth of experience and knowledge will also lead the Committee on Healthcare. The committee is chaired by Senators Yvanna Cancela and Joe Hardy with Assemblywoman Connie Munk and Assemblyman Gregory Hafen II. Healthcare has long been a leading concern in Nevada, and this committee will tackle the challenge of affordable and relevant plans and options for families across the state. The goal of the Committee of Good Governance is to streamline government to reduce red tape where possible, allowing Nevada’s businesses and citizens to thrive and allow our state to continue to prosper. The fifth committee is chaired by veteran legislators Senators Mo Denis and Keith Pickard, with Assemblywoman Daniele MonroeMoreno and Assemblyman John Hambrick. 2019 Person of the Year For the past 30 years, the Customer Service Excellence (CSE) program, in partnership with the Las Vegas Convention and Visitors Authority (LVCVA), provides local businesses the opportunity to support and recognize their valuable employees who make a difference in the everyday work environment. By recognizing employees who provide customer service at the excellence level, you have satisfied frequent customers and you have happy productive employees. Each quarter, the CSE committee reviews nomination submissions and selects an individual to receive the Five Star Award. Five Star Award winners are constantly raising the bar for customer service excellence and are in an elite class of service professionals. From our Five Star Award winners, the committee had to select one of these amazing individuals to be our 2019 CSE Person of the Year. This was no easy task. After the results were reviewed, a Person of the Year was determined. The 2019 CSE Person of the Year award recipient is Adriana Perez of Suncoast Casino. Perez received this prestigious award after we received a letter from her supervisor detailing a unique event that took place

28

BUSINESS VOICE JANUARY 2020 LAS VEGAS CHAMBER

during Adriana’s shift earlier this year. Here is an excerpt from her nomination letter: “One couple comes to eat in the buffet at least 3 times a week. They were sitting in front of the dessert station. The wife went to get her food and the husband sat waiting for his wife to come back with the food. She returned and found her husband unresponsive. Security was called and the EMT’s as well. Adriana stood with the wife while they worked on her husband. After Adriana’s shift ended, she went to Summerlin Hospital to stay with the wife. The wife did not speak any English as she is Cuban, which Adriana is, too. Adriana translated for the wife, so she understood everything the doctors were telling her. She stayed with the wife until the family drove in from LA to be with their mom. Adriana made sure the wife had someone with her, so she would not be alone. Adriana went well beyond her job description and showed compassion and empathy for a couple that comes to eat in the buffet regularly. The buffet makes their guest feel like family and that’s why they keep coming back day after day.” Perez’s genuine interest in her customers, especially during a time of distress, was exemplary. By not only aiding them at the restaurant, but also going to the

hospital to sit with the customer’s wife and being a support and translator to her demonstrates your kindness and genuine care for your customers. On behalf of the Las Vegas Chamber of Commerce and the Las Vegas Convention and Visitors Authority, thank you to Adriana Perez and congratulations on being named as the 2019 CSE Person of the Year. Do you have an outstand example of example of customer service? Share it with us! For more information and to submit nominations for the CSE program, visit LVChamber.com.

News You Can Use

Ten Ways to Start the Year with a Bang! Cheers to 2020! This new year already has some exciting buzz surrounding it: it’s a leap year, and you may have seen the meme about how many of the holidays this year take place on or around the weekend. Clichés in January—here’s looking at you, “New Year, New Year”— abound, but there is something to the resolution to do better when we’re facing a fresh calendar. 1. Attend the Vegas Chamber’s Preview Las Vegas on Friday, Jan. 17. With a new event location at Wynn Las Vegas, plus a dynamic speaker in the NFL’s Roger Goodell, it’s sure to have an energizing agenda! 2. Get curious. A business coach once advised to find out the why behind just about any topic. Do so in a way that draws from a place of curiosity, which creates space for real, transparent communication. 3. Don’t be afraid to ask for what you want. Whether it be a referral, an introduction, or for a client to share his or her experience, it never hurts to ask. If you bring value to those you serve, others will be happy to recommend you to others or refer their contacts who need what you offer. 4. Make the most of your Las Vegas Chamber membership. President and CEO Mary Beth Sewald advises to know what your benefits are and that many organizations can select the benefit options that make the most sense for their business goals. “Do you need to go to events and meet people,” she says. “Or are you interested in HR tools or learning about the latest rules and regulations?” 5. Share your knowledge. Are you an expert in a certain field or industry? If you are, sharing information that is pertinent to your prospective or existing clients can be a worthy initiative. This can be done in a continuing education presentation or via a whitepaper that you share with your audience. As you do, make sure it’s valuable to them and worth their time.

6. Use LinkedIn as a business tool. Have you ever considered reaching out to your potential clients via LinkedIn? Or keeping up with past colleagues or industry experts on the professional social media site? A personalized note with your value proposition can be an interesting way to harvest new relationships. 7. Get schooled. UNLV has a fairly comprehensive continuing education certificate program, as well as many other higher education institutions do. Why not take a course on either something you’ve always wanted to learn—or a topic that you consider a weakness? 8. Develop relationships the “write” way. When you check your mail, don’t you gravitate toward anything that doesn’t look like a bill or advertisement? I schedule “Thank You Fridays” in my calendar, and it’s incredible how much people appreciate handwritten notes. 9. Get into the community. Serve. Network. Learn. Find an organization that helps a cause that you value. Are you an animal lover? Consider volunteering at the Animal Foundation. Want to support kiddos? Think of Make-A-Wish or the Discovery Children’s Museum. Are you a financial whiz? Share your expertise with Junior Achievement. 10. Grow your leadership skills. A Chamber affiliate, the Leadership Foundation of Greater Las Vegas has several phenomenal programs for people looking to develop professionally—and even personally. This author can personally recommend the Leadership Las Vegas program, a ten-month program for experienced professionals to learn together and make a big impact in the community. Wishing you a successful start to this year and decade! Shan Bates-Bundick is a Las Vegas Metro Chamber of Commerce member with nearly two decades of global marketing and communications expertise. She collaborates with businesses and non-profit organizations to create strong value proposition messaging and elevated brand stories in both traditional and digital channels.
