There are only one hundred and ninety three public realm Kik-steps and are 9 staff kik-steps in this

typographic study. Like most objects on mass, especially in numbers of this size, some go unaccounted for.

Check that all nuts and bolts securing top platform are present.

Check that wing nuts (found on older type of kik step) are fully tightened.

If rubber mat on top platform is loose remove kik-step.

The First kik-steps where purchased around the 1970’s for the Plymouth Polytechnic. Although none of the originals are known to exists. But the majority of the kik-steps within the Charles Seale-Hayne Library are manufactured by Ronco (Manufacturers Part No. 1220013), within the United Kingdom. This is the same company that produced the first kik-steps for the building along with trade marking the name kik-step. Although the most recent order of kik-steps was on th

the 27 August 2009, when 30 ‘Top Step’ kik-steps where purchased. These new German kik-steps (Manufacturers Part No. RAL5002) meet TUV SUP standard (traditionally D.I.N. standards) compared to the British GS approved mark.

The role of the kik-step is to for form a platform for reaching high shelving units, but are also used a movable stool for seating. There is roughly one kik-step per row of shelves in the main library and every staff area with a shelving system has it’s own kik-step for this purpose. Each of the Archival rooms has it’s own kik-step. These rooms are: The Special collection and the Ronald Duncan archival room. This room no longer holds the archive in question, but is still used as a temperature controlled room with an adjacent office (which contains no kik-step).
