The penknife is a truly iconic symbol of selfindependence and extreme minimalist born out of pure function. The red little plastic clad Swiss tools have a long history stretching as far back as the Roman era. Although what we know of them today is very unlike the simplistic version used by legionnaires. The inventor of the this modernist instrument we know today, Karl Elseness, and his ‘Original Swiss army knife’ (the manufacture of the penknives illustrated) was due to a contract with the armed forces that beers it’s name in 1891, but a cruel turn of fait dissolved this arrangement. It was only till the G.I.’s turned up in Europe and started to purchase them, mainly because of the corkscrew function, when the world really took notice. Now an institution with many innovators and imitators following this philosophy of design of this humble ‘everyperson’ tool, that is always needed on every picnic and every photo shoot.
