Holiday STYLED By Laura Bissessar

E

veryone has their own approach when it comes to the holiday season. Some dread leaving their homes come November, knowing that cheerful music and poinsettias await them at every doctor’s office and retail store. Others reside on the opposite side of the spectrum, with a layout of lights to start rolling out in October and half the gift list purchased since July. But most of us are around the middle—we can’t believe it’s already the end of yet another year and we need to take it just one day at a time. This can lead to either meticulous scheduling of our beauty routine, or last minute scrambling to get that root touchup before picking up the relatives. Whatever your approach is, here are some effective ways to make—or fake—your way to looking effortlessly holiday ready. If you’re a planner, well there’s not much to say here. You’ve already booked your hair/nail/makeup appointments from here until January (#glamgoals), but here’s one tip you may want to add to that already detailed list: Stock Up. Now is the best time to get all of your beauty faves for less. Gift sets are filled with extra goodies for the same or discounted price as one item and they are impossible to find any other time of the year. So that eye palette that you’ve been eyeballing since June? Now it comes with two glosses and a mascara. Get merry!

Energising Citrus Mist When you can’t put on a fresh face, this helps refresh what you have.

LORAC Cosmetics Contour Palette & Custom Brush When you can’t get to the counter for a professional application or need a mid-day touch up

The Sofia Five-Piece Petites Le Marc Collection A collection of five ultra-hydrating, highly pigmented, long-wear colors to keep you glam all day.

OPI Venice Collection OPI nails never fail, especially at holiday.

NARS Audacious Mascara A buildable mascara that evenly coats from root to tip while amplifying lashes.

N

Jan Marini Holiday Exfoliator in Cranberry Orange A serious gift for your skin. Start the season fresh with a radiant and polished glow.

ow, if you’re taking this jolly season day-by-day, or even if you’re a true holiday slacker, getting to the salon may be the last thing on the list. And all of the salons are booked anyway, but there’s no need to freak out because looking put together before stuffing your face in front of family can actually happen. First of all, nothing looks more effortlessly “I woke up like this” than a fresh manicure. But you don’t have time for that, therefore quick drying nail polish and glitter top coat is your holiday hack. Use quick dry to slap it on before bed and glitter top coat to conceal mistakes and look intentionally festive.

going for a little more sophistication, and happened to choose wrapping gifts over visiting the hairstylist, it’s time to keep it simple. You’re already going classic with red lips, so why not pair it with a timeless high bun or low chignon? Deep condition your hair if the strands have been neglected and use a styling crème to keep the strays tamed (this also works great for short ‘dos!). If roots and grays are the issue, pick up a powder-based root touch up (or if strapped, eye shadow or colored mascara) and brush into dried hair as needed. Only blend out the really noticeable and unwanted parts and set with hairspray. Your hair will live to see its next appointment!

On to makeup: There is so much to be said about that perfect red lipstick. It is the ultimate in finishing off a look and there would be no need to go crazy with the rest of your face. Go for a creamy ruby red or a bright matte red this season and have zero regrets about not getting that eyebrow wax in time.

This holiday season is a time to be enjoyed by all. There is no doubt that it takes lots of planning to fit all of the extra activities into our already full schedules. But that doesn’t mean you can’t look fabulously festive in a pinch. So, prepared or not, we can all still find a way to reach 2016 filled with family, fun, love, and a little—no, LOTS of style!

Finally, hair. If you’re out celebrating somewhere that allows for adults to pull off party hats, then you’re all set. However, if you’re

Rachel Zoe & husband Rodger Berman

R

achel Zoe and husband Rodger Berman shopped for a cause at Ovarian Cancer Research Fund’s first-ever Super Saturday event in Last Vegas at the magnificent Grand Canal Shoppes at The Venetian & The Palazzo. The couple arrived with kids in tow, looking dapper and ready for a day to help in the fight against ovarian cancer. Zoe, who wowed in a top and skirt from the Spring 2016 collection of her Rachel Zoe line, spoke about the importance of OCRF in her life, as she attended her third Super Saturday event of the year. She was heard telling guests, “This is such an important cause and something that is near and dear to my heart. I love this event because it brings together two of my favorite things, raising awareness about the cause and fashion.” Zoe and her family had some quality bonding time at the Grand Canal Shoppes while watching their kids Skyler and Kaius ride the gondolas, before doing a book signing of Zoe’s book “Living in Style”. “Family is the most important thing to me. My kids have been coming to Super Saturday since they were born because I feel it is important for them to know about the organization and to learn what it means. Last time Skyler was in Las Vegas he was in my stomach, so he doesn’t remember it,” she joked. “I am excited to share this special event in Las Vegas with him and my whole family.” The family then headed over to Fashion Show mall where they walked the runway together for a Vegas-style fashion show, stopped by the LEGO store to build some creations and took family photos in the photo booth. When asked about her recent Spring Preview and how her collection has

evolved she replied, “My style and designing has become much more practical. Since I am a mom now, I really try to make the line more simple and easy to wear everyday - much different than before I was a mom.” OCRF partnered with the premier brands at both shopping centers, who donated a portion of sales during the 2-day event to OCRF in support of their research grants and related programs. “We are so excited to expand to another market and bring even more awareness to ovarian cancer research. Super Saturday has been an amazing way to educate people about the disease while raising dollars towards eradicating it,” said Audra Moran, CEO of OCRF. “We have also loved having Rachel Zoe as a part of our OCRF family with these events and are so pleased she was able to come out to Las Vegas to host this. She is such an amazing supporter of the cause and we feel very lucky that we are able to continue to partner with her.” In addition to the shopping, the event had a variety of fun and exciting experiences for guests to enjoy including make-up touch-ups by Sephora, Canyon Ranch SpaClub pop-up spa, a Pepsi Lounge for some cooling refreshments, Pucker Up Beauty Bar, as well as a delectable candy station for some sweet treats decked out in none other than OCRF teal. “As September is ovarian cancer awareness month this made for the perfect partnership to kick-off fall fashion all while supporting a great cause. Grand Canal Shoppes and Fashion Show are proud to pioneer Super Saturday Las Vegas with a unique twist. We look forward to building on this partnership in years to come,” stated Janet LaFevre, senior marketing manager for Fashion Show and Grand Canal Shoppes.

ori Lee is a talented business professional in the beauty industry, with a very interesting back round…

Hailing from Los Angeles, this brainy blonde bombshell began acting at the age of 6, where she quickly became a member of the Screen Children’s Guild and rose up through the talent ranks. As an teen and young adult, she attended Tami Lynn’s Acting Academy -- and she eventually appeared in more than 500 films and television shows both domestic and internationally. She also became a stunt woman for Stunts Unlimited! Further success ensued when she was discovered by famed modeling agent Nina Blanchard and appeared in many commercials, magazines and catalogs. While still enjoying acting and modeling, Lori decided to transfer her enthusiasm over to the beauty and health industries. After attending cosmetology school, Lori started working in many top salons/spas in Los Angeles as a manicurist, determined to learn

After moving to Las Vegas, she became a power player, helping to open each major beauty spa/ salon in the city (MGM, the Amp Salon at the Palms Hotel & Casino, Christophe at the MGM Resort and finally at the Five Diamond and Star rated Wynn Las Vegas). She is currently a beauty practitioner at the COLOR Salon by Michael Boychuck inside Caesar’s Palace, tending to a who’s who of celebrity clientele in a discrete and elegant setting. Babbles &

Bubbles FEATURING

MICHAEL GODARD LORI LEE SAMSON BY

Welcome to my debut column for LV Style; I am thrilled to be here. I’ve been fortunate to know some of the most talented and creative people in the valley, and it’s my mission to give you, the reader, a glimpse into their world. First up, is famed artist Michael Godard. Only he could turn something as simple as tart olives and sweet strawberries into whimsical characters dotting highly stylized pop-culture explosions on canvas! He presents them as real life beings in a sexy, cool, hip way that has to be seen to believed. Michael is a fantastic gentleman with a giving heart, and it was great to catch up with him to discuss his work and much more…

T

ell me about the inspiration for your artwork... I’ve loved to draw for as long as I can remember. Most of my inspiration is a mixture of my twisted sense of humor and stories about life that surrounds us.

The images I create revolve around whatever’s going on in my life or from people watching. Then those elements get thrown together in the form of martini olives, wine grapes or champagne strawberries doing everything from shopping together to gambling. That’s why my artwork comes with a warning. “Be careful what you say or do around me or you may just find yourself the subject of one of my paintings as a strawberry or olive!”

Where did you get the idea to use olives?

A friend of mine asked me to paint him something for his birthday. They said, “The thing I love most about you is your sense of humor. I love martinis with a few olives so just have fun,” and so it began. I created a painting called “olive party” with a bunch of olives with arms and legs having a good time. My aunt saw the painting and said, you know I’m your auntie and I love wine , hint hint. So I created a painting called “Nervous Grapes,” with a few grapes trying to walk a straight line taking a sobriety test by a police officer.

36

LV S T Y L E M A G.C O M

At that moment I had an epiphany and realized alcohol would be a great common theme because it’s such a social event. It’s what we share at a wedding, celebrating a birthday, or just hanging out with friends and relaxing. But although the wine or martini glass is in the paintings, it just defines it as a “Godard” painting. The truth is I get to paint anything I want from a scene in a dental office to a beach vacation.

Michael, I know you have a lot of celebrity clients, one of whom is your idol Ozzy Osbourne. You’ve got a tattoo and do a hysterical impression of him. Ozzy and I have been friends for over 10 years now. He did the forward to my book “Don’t Drink and Draw.” We struck a friendship from the first time we met. He and Sharon are both huge philanthropists and I’ve helped raise money for the Sharon Osbourne Colon Cancer Foundation. The two of them were both very instrumental in helping with my charities as well. Not only are we friends but I’m also a huge fan. I tease Ozzy that I have a shrine in my house built in his honor. It has all the birthday gifts from him which include a guitar he painted and some of his drawings as well as the chopper that was custom made for him during the reality show.

I bought the chopper because they were donating the money to brain cancer which took the life of my daughter Paige at only 16 years old in 2006.

What can you say about your personal style and how it relates to your art?

I still remain friends with Ozzy and Sharon although our busy schedules make it difficult to see each other often.

I’m referred to a lot as the Olive Guy or more commonly “The rock star of the art world”. I’m pretty sure it’s because of the tattoos and the long hair, so I often get asked what band I play in.

Tell our readers about your art galleries… I have three art galleries here in Las Vegas, the Oh My Godard gallery at Planet Hollywood , the Godard Store at the Rio, and Signature gallery in the Venetian. Outside of Sin City my art is featured in many galleries across the U.S., from Hawaii to Florida as well as overseas. My art is sold on 106 cruise ships across the globe as well. I’m constantly touring to just about everywhere. My shows are listed on my website at MichaelGodard.com where you can come hang with me in person.

The truth is, I’m really a math geek at heart. I spent 12 years as a mechanical engineer, with short hair and a suit and tie. But I decided to grow my hair out to donate it to Locks of Love for cancer patients. I also love fun clothes and bling. Carrot Top recently commented at his show that I was so sparkly that it looks like Elton John threw up on me. I like to have fun with clothes and because I’m an artist and I get away with just about anything.

Besides the ordinary paintings on canvas, I’ve have a lot of other fun projects. From album covers to clothing, I think I’ve had over a thousand different products made from my art.

Michael, thank you so much for taking time out of your schedule to answer a few questions. Where can people learn even more about you and your art?

Most recently, I launched my own “Godard vodka” and “Godard gin”. Aristocrat gaming and I combined forces to create slot machines called Godard’s Rockin’ Olives.

Lori, it has been a pleasure. To learn more, visit my website at www. michaelgodard.com.

I recently designed the logo for our arena football team, the Las Vegas Outlaws. I designed some custom guitars for Ovation and the guitarist for Guns n Roses, and painted some large sculptures to raise money for St. Jude’s that you can see in Downtown Summerlin and at The Children’s museum near the Smith Center. There’s always something new I’m getting my hands in to which definitely keeps life interesting for me.

Ready

for Red?

R

ed is usually a color associated with February and Valentine’s Day, and December for Christmas. However, this fall, wear red with passion as many of the clothing designers are showing pieces in this hot hue. Dresses, skirts, pants, suits by Gucci, Dolce & Gabbana, Versace and Ralph Lauren are bring red to the forefront at a time when usually subtle neutrals like caramel are dominating stores and boutiques. Red provides a fun, sexy alternative to the oatmeal-colored hues that are traditionally associated with cooler temperatures by adding a pop of uniqueness to a fall wardrobe. Long, ethereal dresses; sexy formfitting pant suits, frilly blouses, and even shoes and belts are just small ways to add variety to your wardrobe in the cooler months.

A belt: For a fitted look, grab a red cinch belt with a black dress. Or, if you are going casual with jeans, how about a nifty red leather belt to hold up them up? Pair it with a striped top and it’s very chic!

Some women may become nervous wearing red – either they think it’s too daring, or too bright, or too sexy for their taste. However, if you are intrigued by the color and maybe want to try it – there are ways to do it in small doses.

Now, if you want to really try red, but not with an expensive price point, stores such as Express, The Limited, and Banana Republic among others have great clothing such as sweaters, dresses and pants that can fill your red quota without breaking the bank. If money is no object, Gucci has some stunning red pieces this year that accentuate your curves. Just remember what your comfort level is when wearing red. If you feel you can go bold, do it. If not, just start out small and let out your inner “hot.”

A pair of shoes: Find a great pair of red suede or leather driving loafers to wear with your jeans on the weekend as you run errands. What a great look!

A scarf: It does get chilly, even in Las Vegas. Find an infinity scarf and wrap it around your neck and look dazzling and bright. Lipstick: Break out of your neutral look with a splash of fiery red on your lips. Too scared to go all the way? Get a cute sheer lip balm from Revlon or Clinique. For the daring and wild – famed shoe designer Christian Louboutin now has a line of lipsticks that will match your red bottomed shoes!!

Town Square

Classic in black and white, yet with a touch of romance, this is the ultimate dress for a night out on the town, cocktail party or special occasion. Paired with a fantastic shoe or bootie, its almost impossible not to turn heads in this dress!

Leisure trend is everywhere this fall. Mixing everyday casual T-shirt materials with a subtle hint of sheer makes this an everyday must have look. You can never go wrong with simple colors such as black and heather grey; comfy yet sexy you can go flirty in Fall and turn heads without effort in a look such as this.

ill Edwards is mainly known for being the TV host of Las Vegas’ only late night variety talk show, The Will Edwards Show. The show will see its 6th season premiere on MyLVTV (Cox Channel 12, Direct TV Channel 21) on January 8, 2016.

Will always had a great love for fashion, but like many guys out there, he didn’t have the confidence to put an outfit together. His wife, Keisha Frink, told him to look at the Pinterest board that she created for him. Will took her advice and started creating his own boards. Fast forward a few years, and Will has jumped into the field of fashion with his totally unique line of pocket squares. SqWear by Will Edwards was created after a simple conversation Will had with his friend, Jacob Gateson. Will went out that same day, purchased material, and went on YouTube to learn how to sew a rolled hem. He made his first pocket square by hand. Will gifted Jacob one of the originals and after a second conversation, he decided to exclusively recycle shirts in the production of his pocket squares. He realized it would take forever to make them by hand, so he purchased his first sewing machine, some thread, a pair of scissors, and the rest is history. Will is extremely invested in the process of making each square. He takes great care in picking the right shirts that stand out every time you put it in your pocket.

“For me, it’s about color and texture when I pick out shirts. Men don’t have as many accessory options as women do. I wanted to create pocket squares that were different and unique. My hope is that when you’re wearing a SqWear pocket square, people not only compliment you on it but they want to see it up close. They want to touch it. It’s all about how confident you feel when you’re sporting a great pocket square”, Will Edwards states. SqWear also has a custom service they provide to their customers. If you have an old shirt from a loved one, and you want to always remember them, ship your shirt to SqWear and they will turn it into a pocket square for you. Getting married and want something special for the groomsmen? Send over the extra material from one of the bridesmaid’s dresses. It will be a great look as well as make an awesome gift. These pocket squares are raw, rustic and unique. You know someone is wearing SqWear because of the signature buttons on each square. These are not your Dad’s pocket squares. Once you’ve purchased one, your pockets will never be the same. To find out more about SqWear by Will Edwards, and to purchase your own pocket squares, go to SqWearbyWillEdwards.com. To keep up with Will Edwards, check him out at willedwardsentertainer.com. Get more information about The Will Edwards Show at thewilledwardsshow.com.

VICTOR TWIST THE NEXT STAGE IN THE EVOLUTION OF MEN’S WEAR

R

elative to how women’s fashions can turn on a dime each season, it takes an eternity for men’s wear to change. Longer still, it seems, for any change to actually take hold. But Victor Twist, a visionary new label, is ushering the evolution along in some innovative directions to provide men with intriguing sartorial choices. The brand debuts with a limited edition Fall/Winter 2015 collection of sophisticated staples consisting of knit and woven tops, bottoms, and jackets in black, gray and navy with accents of electric blue and maroon. With long sleeved tops accented by zippers paralleled down the arm hole seams, T’s with leather pockets or hems, cozy crew neck sweaters, leather sleeved bomber jackets and leather and zipper-accented track pants, these are casual essentials that elevate everyday street wear to something truly special. Creative Director and designer Victor Xie conceived Victor Twist as a functional reflection of modern city life, imprinting on the pieces - via the placements of its signature grommets and hand-laced cords – an artistic abstraction of our collective perception of the digital age. The unexpected zipper details echo the often hurried movement in a bustling metropolis; while the placid colors conversely denote its rare moments of stillness. The linear simplicity is evocative of architecture, allowing these pieces to be coordinated or layered with each other as easily as they can be matched with denims and other items in any man’s closet, and adding a different dimension to any mix. It is modernity at its finest, reveling in the hard working and harder playing ethos of men in cities and everywhere in between. “There’s a stylistic gap between casual wear that can often be unremarkable and urban street wear that can be too flashy. I wanted to provide men with a way of bridging that gap with enough room to define their own sense of style,” explains Victor. “The brand has a definite look that doesn’t rely on trends, and was ultimately designed for men with the confidence to wear them in ways that fit into their lifestyles.” Manufactured with artisanal flair and intricate craftsmanship, the collection is available at retail in specialty boutiques and online at www.victortwist.com from about $65 to $250. Men’s wear has evolved and its next stage is here in Victor Twist.

On the night of this photoshoot, our haunted beauty Mariah was suddenly taken by surprise, when out of the darkness came forth a strange energy. Mariah trembled inside, but her nature was clear, “I am art” she told herself “the show must go on”. Patrick continued to shot away, as the gliding spirit warped the light of the room. “You look lovely Mariah” said Brandy, “it all seems right, your hair and makeup are perfect.” Brandy had secured the fine details of Mariah’s Victorian grace. Turquoise BY LIZ FRYE

I

t’s traditionally associated with the old west, Native Americans and comes in a variety of colors.

“It” is turquoise, and it’s making a comeback; this time branching out from the traditional southwestern frame of reference and into high fashion. Usually seen on reservations and trading posts, turquoise is now being used by high end jewelers such as Tiffany &Co among others, serving as a new influence and being combined with diamonds, gold and gemstones in fantastical pieces. While turquoise can be found as far as places such as China and Iran, the finest and the most in demand come from the United States. Specifically, there are four states in which the bulk of turquoise is found – Arizona, Nevada, New Mexico and Colorado. For those unaware of the nuances of turquoise – here’s a little nugget of information: green turquoise is primarily found in Nevada because of the high concentration of iron in the mines; traditional blue is found in the other states because of the high concentration of copper. Each of those minerals plays a big role in determining the look and feel of turquoise. A prize among turquoise collectors is the increasingly rare Sleeping Beauty from Gila County, Arizona. The mine shut down several years ago and any jewelry made from it comes from private stashes. Sleeping Beauty is known for its flawless bright blue color and can have either a matrix (veins) or not. Another popular turquoise is Kingman, which is from Arizona near

60

LV S T Y L E M A G.C O M

highway 93. The Kingman mine has been the biggest supplier to the southwestern turquoise industry for several decades now. It is unusual because it also produces a green turquoise that is almost as plentiful as the blue variety. Depending on your preferences, how your turquoise is presented in the settings will determine the look. For the more traditional unpolished chunky stone look, look for pendants, necklaces, bracelets and rings set in genuine (.925) sterling silver which is usually Navajo. Your jewelry if made with finer, almost needle-like work is Zuni. This is just a very cursory explanation, but true Native American jewelry will have a stamp or signature by the artist in question. Sometimes they will also indentify their tribe, too. There are also other types of very rare turquoise. Popular among the ladies in Southern California is white or “sacred” buffalo. The stone is white with either black or brown veins running through it. Seeing it on display is to appreciate it greater. To just describe it doesn’t do it justice. Another unusual kind is called Boulder Mountain. Imagine, brown with small slivers of green turquoise with small striations of black veins running through it- the appearance is stunning and a very cool earthy look that fits in with the desert climate. Whether traveling through the Southwest or visiting a local Native American jewelry store such as Native Jewelers in the Grand Bazaar Shops at Bally’s, be armed with as sense of wonder and curiosity marveling over these wearable pieces of art.

manda Kouretas is a devoted wife and mother of three, philanthropist, Las Vegas personality and a fashion-savvy style icon. Epitomizing what it means to be the “It Woman” of Las Vegas, the glamorous former Mrs. Nevada-America 2011 works hard at coordinating all of her various roles while maintaining a keen sense of humor, and a knack for making it all look effortless. Amanda has become a one-word name with her unique lifestyle brand. Featured on TV and in print, she has catapulted herself as the inspirational and humorous lifestyle expert on everything from fashion to family. Her love for fashion has pivoted her into the spotlight on red carpets and social events all over town. “Life is my red carpet,” she explains. “I love walking into a room and being so over-the-top with all eyes on me. Fashion should be fun! But, the other side of me is much more casual and funky. I like to have something funny about my style. I can be dressed down completely in jeans and an old high-school T-shirt and wear it with diamonds. I was born with a love for style and part of that is understanding how to balance it all in a meaningful way.” For Amanda, style is about everything from high-end couture to simple, everyday fashion, combining old with new.

66

LV S T Y L E M A G.C O M

W

ith a love for gorgeous clothes and accessories, Amanda’s greatest passions are jewels, shoes and gowns. She notes, “…people are always asking me, ‘What are you wearing?’ and ‘Where can I get that gown?’ whenever I attend an event.” In fashion, the fall/winter season (in particular) opens up opportunities to be seen in the newest trends and most flattering designs on red carpets and at various events. Featured wearing some of her favorites, such as Sergio Rossi shoes, Ted Baker clothing, Berger & Son fine jewels, and a stunning gown by Nessa Apostal, Amanda knows what she likes and she knows how to flaunt it. These designers have their fingers on the pulse of what’s hot and what people love to wear. Coupling classic style with unique trends and seamlessly bringing it all together is what makes for fearless and functional fashion. “Designers often watch what people on the streets are doing and translate that into couture; fashion itself originates from a very organic and urban place.” Amanda notes that it’s this juxtaposition that intrigues and inspires her fashion sense, “…(at an event) I think about everything from how I’m dressed to what I’m holding in my hand.” Every detail, from carefully chosen accessories to restyling a couture gown for an event, goes into the planning process for an outfit. Amanda occasionally likes to buy things that are simple and style them with great accent pieces. She explains that one can change up a hairstyle, makeup, jewelry, shoes or a fabulous clutch to complete an entirely fresh look on an already worn garment. “Fashion derives from necessity, but it also comes from trying to set yourself apart, it’s a way to express yourself. YOU are your own brand.” The most tenured stylists and designers will say that fashion needs to be true to the individual in order to come off as authentic. “It’s true that I have some beautiful things, but that’s not what fills my heart. My family, helping and connecting with people, and making them laugh is what I’m the most passionate about! Your heart and smile will always be your best accessories. How you leave others feeling becomes your trademark.”
