The 2017- 2018 school year marks Cape Charles Christian School’s ninth year in operation. We are pleased to offer an educational option for the children of Virginia’s Eastern Shore. Our school presently serves children from pre-school (age 3) through Eighth Grade. Our teachers strive to make each child’s learning experience unique, while ensuring that each child works to his or her potential. Our small class size allows teachers to know each child as an individual learner. The multi-age classroom structure allows teachers to spend two years working with each student. All of our teachers hold teaching licenses from the Commonwealth of Virginia and have extensive classroom experience. We are proud of the family atmosphere that prevails at Cape Charles Christian School. Our students genuinely care for and respect one another. This allows us to have fun, while continuing to learn and grow. Christian principles are reinforced during each Bible class and Chapel. Each Tuesday, the student body gathers to hear more about God’s word, sing His praises, and to give thanks for our many blessings. Chapel is led by our Bible coordinator or by a guest pastor from one of the area churches. We are fortunate to have strong community ties. Our children can be seen at the playground, park, library, ArtsEnter, and Impact Fitness. We walk to the harbor and other town locations in an effort to extend our learning beyond the classroom walls. Children also participate in guest lectures and off-site field trips. Our teachers have developed an interesting, well-rounded curriculum based on the National Common Core Standards. Topics are explored through various themes. There is a strong focus on reading development. Children read quality literature at their instructional level. Writing as a means to express oneself in a clear, creative manner is emphasized. Each child participates in standardized testing each spring. We would love the opportunity to discuss our school with you further. Please give us a call at 757-331-1717 to schedule a visit. Thank you for your interest in Cape Charles Christian School.

MULTI-AGE CLASSROOMS What are they? A multi-age classroom places together students of different ages with a range of achievement levels. The teacher plans instruction and assessment expecting and celebrating diversity within the class.

How do they look at Cape Charles Christian School? Students who would typically be considered Kindergarten or First Graders are grouped together; traditional Second/ Third Graders form another group; those who would be considered Fourth/Fifth Graders are placed together in another group. Students remain with their teacher for a two-year period.

How are they different from typical grade-level classrooms? A typical classroom follows a scope and sequence of tasks with specific starting and ending points. Students either master the skills designated and “pass” or don’t master the skills and “fail”. All students take the same tests to measure their success at “mastering” the curriculum. Students typically use the same textbooks and materials. In a multi-age classroom, students are taught at their grade level. Students are grouped by skill need, not by ability. Groups change frequently. Students can participate in review lessons and enrichment lessons as needed, without regard to their age. Student progress is monitored closely and students advance from one level to the next in a continuous fashion, rather than waiting for the next school year to start.

What are the benefits of multi-age classrooms? The academic needs of both slower and faster learners can be met with a more flexible and needs driven curriculum. Students and teachers spend two years together, minimizing the time it takes to “start over” learning new procedures, routines, and expectations each year. Research indicates that students in multiage classrooms have more positive attitudes toward school. Children have more opportunities to be leaders in their classrooms. Since there are no “grade-level” mandates, students can spend more time learning a particular skill when necessary and excel beyond typical achievement when possible.

Upper School Overview At Cape Charles Christian School, the Upper School further develops the reading, writing, speaking and critical-thinking skills developed in the Lower School, and prepares students for the greater independence and responsibility of adolescence. In all subject areas, teachers help students master the skills needed to conduct research, absorb new materials, speak clearly, write clearly, behave ethically, and organize their time. The Upper School academic program is based on the national common core standards. • In English, students explore a variety of literature- often historical fiction paired with our social studies units. Students build upon the basic mathematical manipulations taught in lower school. Using this background, we expand math facts to develop logical reasoning skills. Our methodology includes solving equations using Algebraic rationale. • In science, students apply the scientific method to investigate topics such as, inside the earth, the earth’s changing surface, human biology and health, chemical building blocks, and electricity and magnetism. • In history, students explore World History, American History, and Civics and Economics. • The use of technology for instruction, research, and presentation in integrated throughout the Upper School Curriculum whenever suitable. Teachers in the Upper School use direct instruction to impart essential knowledge skills, but throughout collaborative, project-based learning, they also cultivate teamwork, leadership, and public speaking skills. With small class sizes, teachers are able to individualize instruction for students as necessary. Each day Upper School students are provided the opportunity to speak in front of others. All upper school students and teachers gather with the lower school for “Morning Gathering.” During this time, a devotional is read, prayers are said, and students actively participate in the opening to each day. On Tuesdays, the entire school participates in Chapel. During Chapel, upper grade students often perform skits, recite Bible verses, or sing song with the group. Partnership with families is also a prized component of our community approach to learning. Upper school parents have the opportunity to connect to school life through our Parent Teacher Organization, parent nights, parent-teacher conferences, and a multitude of extracurricular events. Teachers aim to be proactive and respond promptly to parent questions and concerns. A variety of activities are available during and after school throughout the year. We offer Cross-Country Running, Horse Club, after-school tutoring, Show Choir, Odyssey of the Mind, DARE and other teacher/parent sponsored clubs.
