CURRICULUM SPOTLIGHT T eaching T hem atically Across Curriculum Motiv ates Students

Our second and third grade teacher, Leslie Savage, demonstrates that curriculum goals can be exceeded by engaging students in a theme which is then extended across all subject matters and throughout the school year. This powerful strategy has been proven to engage and motivate students. Lessons planned throughout the year in reading, writing, social studies, math, art, science and even physical education tie back to the year's theme. STUDENT SPOTLIGHT Rhiana Baker, Ly la Harris, Grace Sm ith and T atum Watson

Rhiana Baker (Grade 2) and, Lyla Harris, Grace Smith and Tatum Watson (Grade 3) recently received accolades from their teacher, Leslie Savage, on their excellent collaboration on a 3-dimensional book report. In keeping with their curriculum theme of Oceanography, the class recently read the book Shark Lady written by Ann McGovern about Eugenie Clark, a famous ichthyologist. Mrs. Savage felt the girls' project was an excellent representation of Eugenie's first experience underwater with a diving helmet and that they did a wonderfully superb job of explaining their understanding of the book. Don't know exactly what an Ichthyologist does? You'll have to ask one of our second or third graders next time you see them!
