OCTOBER 2018 The 2018-2019 school year is off to a great start! Everyone at here at the Cape Charles Christian School is excited to have our 10th year of operations well under way. As we close out our first full month, it's evident the school has once again become a hub of activity with smiling faces of our students and staff. Please take the time to read through our fall newsletter for important news and detailed information on great happenings, such as our school-wide project learning activities. ~ Holly Hubbard, Head of School

CURRICULUM SPOTLIGHT October Presents Opportunities for Hands-On Learning

At Cape Charles Christian School (CCCS), we value hands-on, project-based learning. Research shows that children who learn by doing are able to apply context to their lessons and are 29% more likely to retain the material. "Kids learn through all their senses," says Ben Mardell, PhD, a researcher with Project Zero at Harvard University, "and they like to touch and manipulate things." Simply moving materials around and hands-on activities activate kids' brains. OUR SCHOOL-WIDE CLASSROOM MANAGEMENT INITIATIVE

1-2-3 MAGIC

During a recent PTO meeting, we shared a bit about our new school-wide classroom management initiative based on the award winning program,1-2-3 Magic, designed by Thomas W. Phelan, Ph.D. This program addresses the task of child discipline, and in our case classroom management, with a calm approach. As a baseline for this program, students clearly understand their behavioral expectations and adults are established as a respected leader of the classroom. This program enables us to develop an exciting classroom environment full of cooperation and collaboration. If you are interested in exploring this program for your household, we can recommend Dr. Phelan's book or video, which are both produced with humor, keen insight and proven experience.

CCCS CHAPEL PROGRAM Our students attend Chapel on Tuesday mornings. Chapel is a time when the whole school comes together for songs, prayers, games and a Bible Lesson. As a theme for the fall, we are focusing on the character trait of "KINDNESS". We will learn about ways that we can be kind to our family, school, community, animals and the world. As part of this learning, we will undertake four projects: Collecting old sheets and towels for local animal shelters. Making paper placemats for the Soup Kitchen in Exmore. Operation Christmas Child Packing Party - Packing boxes for children around the world. Collecting socks for the residents in local nursing homes. We appreciate your children and all the kindness they give to our community!

CCCS PeliCANS RUNNING CLUB

Cape Charles Christian School (CCCS) is participating in the nationwide JUST RUN program, designed to promote physical activity among youth. We're off to a great start! Students in grades 1-8 are participating in the optional CCCS PeliCANS JUST RUN Running Club, which meets on Tuesdays and Thursdays through November 20 from 3:00 - 3:45 PM. During this time, we combine running with stretching, drills, games and discussions about Healthy Lifestyles. JUST RUN includes incentives for students who run at home with their parents. Students are encouraged to record their miles, which is noted on their distance log kept by CCCS. An additional incentive includes logging individual and group miles to be tracked collectively on a map with an effort towards "Running Across Virginia". Middle school teacher, Shannon Wescoat, an accomplished collegiate and marathon runner, is thrilled to coach our PeliCANS and looks forward to the each club meeting! Erica Johnson, our K/1 teacher, is pleased to assist Mrs. Wescoat. Over half of our students are participating in this awesome adventure! To learn more about JUST RUN, visit their website here.

RENEWANATION INFORMATION SESSION, THURSDAY OCTOBER 18 As we announced last year, CCCS was recently named a Renewanation Scholarship Fund designee. The Renewanation Foundation, based in Roanoke, Virginia, is funded by passionate donors from across the United States who desire to impact the life of a student by providing them with a Christian worldview education. Scholarships are provided to Christian schools like CCCS for new applicants who have demonstrated financial need. Representatives from Renewanation will be visiting with potential donors on Thursday, October 18 from 5:30-7PM. Donors will be pleased to learn that they may receive up to 65% in tax credits when they donate through the Renewanation Foundation.
