The Undertones

Richard Hawley

Thursday 12 July 2012

Friday 13 July 2012

Punk rock band, The Undertones, will kick-start the four-day festival. The new wave band was formed by five friends in Derry in Northern Ireland in 1975. The original line-up drew inspiration from the likes of the Beatles and released thirteen singles and four studio albums before disbanding in July 1983. With the arrival of punk rock in late 1976, the artistic focus of the band changed, with artists such as the Sex Pistols becoming major influences.

Singer-songwriter, guitarist and producer, Richard Hawley will grace the Playhouse stage armed with an array of songs from his six studio albums. After finding success as a member of Britpop band Longpigs in the 1990s, he later joined the band Pulp before going on to release a series of albums as a solo artist. In 2006, he gained a nomination for the Mercury Prize and in 2008 Hawley was nominated for his first solo Brit Award for Best British Male Performer.

There will be a majestic display of crowns, flags and heraldry, in a lavish array of gold, silver, majestic reds and royal blues in a nod towards the Jubilee with a Samba twist. Live | Music The Caffreys The legendary Caffrey brothers have been singing together for most of their lives. The North East rock band are very much a force to be reckoned with – on stage, on record or on the radio. Their magnificent three-part harmonies will open proceedings on Sunday at the Priory. Rossi Noise Tyneside 5 piece Rossi Noise fuse Dubstep, Dance, Drum and Bass, Hip Hop and Rock into songs of cinematic proportions. They are tipped for big things in 2012.

Yes Sir Boss With a special blend of off-beat rhythms and epic riffs, Bristol-based Yes Sir Boss are already popular on the UK festival circuit. Exhilarating and stomping, their music is perfect for a summer afternoon.

The South The South, formerly The Beautiful South, want everyone to know that they are still beautiful! The nine piece features vocalists Dave Hemmingway and Alison Wheeler and many other original band members. Their hits include ‘A Little Time’, ‘Don’t Marry Her’ and ‘You Keep It All In’.

Heaven17 Sunday headliners Heaven17 originated from Sheffield in the early 1980s and have continued to have hits three decades on. The trio comprises Martyn Ware, Ian Craig Marsh, both previously with The Human League, and Glenn Gregory. Over the years, they have worked with a range of artists including Chaka Khan and Tina Turner, and in 1983 the band had their highest charted single with ‘Temptation’. 7

Dirty Dusting Tynemouth Priory Theatre – 4th to 7th July. Hilarious comedy about a trio of 70-something hard-working cleaners who are facing the axe. They might be over the hill but they certainly won’t take threats of redundancy lying down. These game ‘girls’ set up a phone line, known as “The Telephone Belles”, and that’s when the fun really begins. Their bosses don’t know about it, their families would never guess and their very willing customers are none the wiser. Dirty Dusting is on at Tynemouth Priory Theatre from 4th – 7th July at 7.30pm. All tickets are £11 and available from 0191 256 0566 or http://dirtydusting.eventbrite.co.uk
