We found SaphirKeramik to be a light and versatile, sturdy and malleable material. It allowed for many variations as we designed each possibility for everyday use. Its slender profile adapts to all classic to contemporary spaces and is environmentally friendly. In fact, SaphirKeramik is a superstrong ceramic material, yet it allowed us to create minimal, architectural lines. You have developed many interior design concepts for hotels. To what extent does this experience influence the design of the new Laufen bathroom collection? mw The great thing about our projects is that we learn from everything we do. So, with each project, we discover something we want to try or we learn about the innovation of new material that will let us explore new shapes and new combinations. Along the way, we learned what people find interesting, what moves them and creates meaning. We brought all of that to the new Laufen bathroom collection. gc Every interior space we’ve worked in has been different and it has forced us to see things in a new way. We have designed for large spaces and small ones. We have worked with so many different materials. In doing this, we have imagined new concepts that take a little from everything we’ve done previously. With the new Laufen bathroom collection, that means we could confidently match woods to ceramics and architectural metals to glass and mirrors. What is your creative process? How do you approach a new project? mw Approaching a project for me takes many different paths. I enjoy the process of daydreaming as much as collaborating and bouncing ideas off of others. I take time to sketch, write about and even prototype designs. My process can be described as organised inspiration. Throughout the process, I look for every opportunity to replace the coldness of industry with humanity, while uplifting the human spirit. gc Much of my approach to a new project is tactile in nature. As I study materials, I get new ideas. I juxtapose objects and textures and experiment to find combinations of colour and shapes to add another layer of concept and thus a deeper layer of connection. Finding balance between form and function, I let my imagination wander and then channel all of the various directions toward a finished design. In your opinion, what constitutes good bathroom design? mw The design throughout the set plays a crucial role in making the connection with the human spirit in this intimate space of rejuvenation. gc

What did you find most appealing in the collaboration with Laufen? mw Laufen is known the world over for its excellence at generating ideas to create the classic and contemporary bathroom. The company embodies an experimental nature. The designers’ innovative drive manifests itself in the personality of this highly traditional Swiss brand that reflects a symbiosis of design, quality and functionality. The pragmatic approach of Laufen and its perseverance to constantly evolve is something that pulled me in and motivated us to move forward with them along a path of innovation. gc In addition to their knowledge and creativity, what makes working with Laufen enjoyable for me is that their Swiss design unites two major design trends: emotional Italian design from the south and the northern tradition of design precision and clarity. Their quality has two aspects to it: the manufacturing knowledge that they put into everything they create and the high degree of practical benefit the customer gets out of it. What technical challenges were you confronted with when designing the new Laufen bathroom collection? mw The bathroom setting will always be about elegant functionality, and we designed each piece to fit into this seamless collection. This was the first time SaphirKeramik was used in new very classical and iconic forms. So, there was a little bit of a learning curve for us. But what we found with this hygienic, hard-wearing and recyclable material is that it perfectly conforms to the design concept we were striving to achieve. SaphirKeramik gave us a unique opportunity to celebrate the beauty of thin ceramic with our elegant soft shapes.

I believe good bathroom design, much like this collection, is design that expresses a juxtaposing nature, that mixes and matches elements in such a way that they not only work together, but also work in relation to you. gc Bathroom design ought not be considered to have a goal that is any different from other design projects. Regardless of location, good design is that which connects and creates meaning for people. Specifically, in the bathroom, our goal is to perfect the design to create the most pampered, private experience. Your designs are often eye-catching, playful, romantic, sometimes pompous. How is the interior design of your own home? mw My personal interior style expresses a dynamic sense of eclecticism appointed with modern accents. I have designed each room to be a welcoming environment that surprises and delights guests. I want people who visit to always find something new to discover in a room and within themselves. Versatile ambiences define the overall space. With an ensemble of marble, glass, textiles and stainless steel, I have purposefully orchestrated complementary atmospheres. From the appliances to the furniture, art work and lighting, each room is symbiotic to the whole home. gc My home is intimate. There is a personal vibe to it that is welcoming. While designed with open spaces, it is not without its areas of warmth. I have filled the space with historical souvenirs and memories from my experiences that present a wide array of textures and shapes. I have lived in several different countries and have travelled a great deal. Somewhat like in a museum, there are artifacts that represent eras past and our present times. Across my home these objects intermingle to create a whole ensemble of my life – from a contemporary Moooi led lamp to a 19th-century African mask. Which design object has been in your possession the longest? mw What I have had the longest is my Driade silver-plated candlesticks of Borek Sipek. Timeless and elegant, the candleholder features multiple stems that branch off from the base in a meandering contoured fashion. When lit, the candles cast a warm glow and create shadows that dance and charm.

Was hat Sie an der Zusammenarbeit mit Laufen am meisten gereizt? mw Laufen ist auf der ganzen Welt bekannt für seinen Ideenreichtum bei der Gestaltung des klassischen und modernen Badezimmers. Das Unternehmen ist stets für neue Lösungen offen. Das innovative Streben des Designers manifestiert sich in der Persönlichkeit dieser traditionsreichen Schweizer Marke, die eine Symbiose aus Design, Qualität und Funktionalität verkörpert. Welche technischen Herausforderungen mussten Sie bei der Gestaltung der neuen Badezimmer-Kollektion von Laufen meistern? mw Bei Badeinrichtungen geht es immer um elegante Funktionalität, und wir haben jedes Stück so gestaltet, dass es sich nahtlos in diese Kollektion einfügt. Es war das erste Mal, dass SaphirKeramik für neue, sehr klassische und ikonische Formen eingesetzt wurde. Ein kleines bisschen bedeutete das auch eine Lernkurve für uns. Aber wie wir festgestellt haben, passt dieses hygienische, strapazierfähige und wiederverwertbare Material perfekt zu dem von uns angestrebten Designkonzept. SaphirKeramik gab uns die einzigartige Gelegenheit, die Schönheit dünner Keramik mit unseren eleganten weichen Formen zur Geltung zu bringen. gc Wir haben SaphirKeramik als ein leichtes und vielseitiges, robustes und formbares Material schätzen gelernt. Es eröffnete uns bei der Gestaltung der Varianten für den täglichen Gebrauch zahllose Möglichkeiten. Durch sein

schlankes Profil eignet es sich für alle Arten von Räumen, von klassisch bis zeitgenössisch, und ausserdem ist es umweltfreundlich. Dabei ist SaphirKeramik ein extrem festes Keramikmaterial, mit dem wir dennoch minimalistische, architektonische Linien realisieren konnten. Sie haben viele Interior-DesignKonzepte für Hotels entwickelt. Inwieweit haben Ihre Erfahrungen in diesem Bereich das Design der neuen Badezimmer-Kollektion von Laufen beeinflusst? mw Das Schöne an unseren Projekten ist, dass wir aus allem, was wir tun, lernen. So entdecken wir mit jedem Projekt etwas Neues, das wir ausprobieren wollen, oder wir lernen innovative neue Materialien kennen, die uns neue Formen und neue Kombinationen erschließen. So bekommen wir auch ein Gespür dafür, was die Menschen interessant finden, was sie bewegt und was einen Sinn vermittelt. All dies haben wir in die neue BadezimmerKollektion von Laufen eingebracht. gc Jede Innenraumgestaltung war anders und zwang uns gewissermassen zu einer neuen Sicht auf die Dinge. Wir haben Designkonzepte für große und kleine Räume entwickelt. Wir haben mit einer Vielzahl unterschiedlicher Materialien gearbeitet. Dabei haben wir neue Konzepte entwickelt, die alle ein bisschen von dem enthalten, was wir bisher gemacht haben. Für die neue Badezimmer-Kollektion von Laufen bedeutet dies, dass wir stilsicher Holz mit Keramik und architektonische Metalle mit Glas und Spiegelflächen kombinieren konnten. Wie sieht Ihr kreativer Prozess aus? Wie nähern Sie sich einem neuen Projekt? mw Die Annäherung an ein neues Projekt erfolgt bei mir über viele verschiedene Wege. Ich mag den Prozess des Tagträumens ebenso wie die Zusammenarbeit und den Austausch von Ideen mit anderen. Ich nehme mir die Zeit, neue Designideen zu skizzieren, aufzuschreiben oder sogar Prototypen zu schaffen. Man könnte diesen Prozess auch als „organisierte Inspiration“ bezeichnen. Dabei nutze ich jede sich bietende Möglichkeit, die industrielle Kälte durch menschliche Wärme zu ersetzen und so den humanen Geist zur Geltung zu bringen. gc Meine Herangehensweise an ein Projekt ist vor allem taktiler Natur. Während ich mich mit den Materialien befasse, bekomme ich neue Ideen. Ich platziere Objekte und Strukturen nebeneinander auf der Suche nach Kombinationen von Farben und Formen, um so dem Konzept eine weitere Ebene hinzuzufügen und eine tiefere Ver-

bindung herzustellen. Ich lasse meiner Vorstellungskraft freien Lauf, um Form und Funktion in Einklang zu bringen, und führe die verschiedenen Richtungen schliesslich zum fertigen Design zusammen. Was macht gutes Badezimmer-Design Ihrer Ansicht nach aus? mw Ein stimmiges Design aller Komponenten ist von wesentlicher Bedeutung, um in diesem intimen Bereich der Verjüngung eine Verbindung mit dem menschlichen Geist herzustellen. Ich finde, dass gutes Badezimmer-Design wie bei dieser Kollektion ein Design ist, das verschiedene Elemente nebeneinanderstellt, mischt und zusammenbringt, sodass sie sich nicht nur zu einem Ganzen fügen, sondern auch einen Bezug zum Benutzer herstellen. gc Man darf nicht meinen, Badezimmer-Design hätte eine andere Zielsetzung als andere Designprojekte. Es ist gutes Design, das Menschen verbindet und ihnen einen Sinn vermittelt, egal an welchem Ort. Gerade im Badezimmer möchten wir das Design so perfektionieren, dass ein sehr privates Verwöhnerlebnis geschaffen wird. Ihre Entwürfe sind häufig ein echter Blickfang, verspielt, romantisch, bisweilen prunkvoll. Wie haben Sie Ihr eigenes Zuhause gestaltet? mw Mein persönlicher Einrichtungsstil ist Ausdruck eines dynamischen Eklektizismus, der mit modernen Akzenten versehen ist. Ich habe jeden Raum so gestaltet, dass er zu einem einladenden Ort wird, der Gäste überrascht und erfreut. Ich möchte, dass die Menschen, die zu mir kommen, immer wieder etwas Neues entdecken, in einem Raum und in sich selbst. Das Ambiente des Raums zeichnet sich insgesamt durch Vielfältigkeit aus. Ich habe mit einem Ensemble aus Marmor, Glas, Textilien und Edelstahl gezielt komplementäre Stimmungen inszeniert. Von der Technik bis hin zu den Möbeln, der Kunst und der Beleuchtung geht jeder Raum eine Symbiose mit dem ganzen Haus ein. gc Mein Haus ist ein intimer Bereich. Es strahlt eine persönliche Atmosphäre aus, die zum Verweilen einlädt. Obwohl es mit offenen Räumen gestaltet wurde, gibt es trotzdem Bereiche, die Wärme ausstrahlen. Es finden sich viele alte Souvenirs und Erinnerungen an meine Erlebnisse, die ein weites Spektrum von Strukturen und Formen präsentieren.

Quelles raisons vous ont le plus incités à collaborer avec Laufen? mw Laufen est connue à travers le monde entier pour sa capacité à développer de nouvelles idées et créer des salles de bain à la fois classiques et modernes. Cette société incarne une véritable nature expérimentale. La force innovante de ses designers s’exprime à travers la singularité de cette marque suisse très attachée à la tradition, qui reflète une véritable symbiose alliant design, qualité et fonctionnalité. L’approche pragmatique de Laufen et ses efforts d’amélioration constants ont véritablement retenu mon attention et nous ont par ailleurs incités à nous engager avec elle sur la voie de l’innovation. gc Si j’aime travailler avec Laufen, c’est non seulement pour sa connaissance et sa créativité, mais aussi et surtout pour son design suisse alliant deux tendances majeures: le design émotionnel à l’italienne en provenance du sud et la clarté et la précision caractérisant si bien les designs de tradition nordique. Sa qualité recèle deux aspects: sa connaissance en matière de fabrication présente dans tout ce qu’elle crée et le degré élevé d’avantages pratiques dont le client bénéficie. À quels défis techniques avez-vous dû faire face lors de la conception de la dernière collection de salles de bain Laufen? mw Chaque élément a été conçu pour s’intégrer de manière harmonieuse dans cette collection parfaitement homogène, sans pour autant nuire au caractère élégant des fonctionnalités. C’est la première fois que nous parvenions à intégrer SaphirKeramik dans de nouvelles formes classiques et emblématiques. Nous étions donc un peu en mode d’apprentissage. Mais nous avons pu constater que ce matériau hygiénique, résistant et recyclable est parfaitement conforme au concept que nous nous efforcions d’obtenir en termes de design. SaphirKeramik nous a permis de marier la beauté de la finesse de la céramique avec nos formes douces et élégantes. gc Nous avons trouvé en SaphirKeramik un matériau léger, polyvalent, robuste et malléable. Ses nombreuses variations nous ont

permis d’exploiter chaque possibilité pour une utilisation quotidienne. Ce matériau respectueux de l’environnement se caractérise par un profil élancé qui s’adapte à chaque espace, qu’il soit classique ou moderne. SaphirKeramik est en somme un matériau céramique ultrarésistant qui nous a permis de créer des contours minimalistes et architecturaux. Vous avez développé de nombreux concepts d’intérieur pour hôtels. Dans quelle mesure cette expérience a-t-elle influencé le design de la nouvelle collection de salles de bain Laufen? mw Ce qu’il y a de merveilleux dans chacun de nos projets, c’est que nous apprenons en permanence, et ce quoi que nous fassions. Ainsi, avec chaque projet, nous découvrons quelque chose de nouveau à expérimenter ou nous apprenons à apprivoiser un nouveau matériau qui nous permettra d’explorer de nouvelles formes et de tester de nouvelles combinaisons. Au cours de ce processus, nous avons appris à connaître les intérêts du public, à savoir ce qui l’inspire, et à identifier ce qui crée du sens. Tout ceci, nous l’avons concentré sur la nouvelle collection de salles de bain Laufen. gc Chaque espace intérieur sur lequel nous avons travaillé a ses propres spécificités et nous a obligés à reconsidérer les choses. Nous avons conçu pour de grands, comme pour de petits espaces avec une multitude de matériaux différents. Ce faisant, nous avons imaginé de nouveaux concepts s’inspirant un tant soit peu de tous nos travaux précédents. Avec la nouvelle collection de salles de bain Laufen, nous sommes assurément parvenus à marier le bois et la céramique et à allier les métaux architecturaux avec le verre et les miroirs. Quelle est votre démarche créative? Quelle approche adoptez-vous à chaque nouveau projet? mw Selon moi, nombreuses et multiples sont les voies d’approche d’un projet. J’apprécie tout autant les phases dédiées à la rêvasserie, à la collaboration et à l’échange d’idées avec les autres. Je prends le temps de réaliser des ébauches, de mettre mes idées sur papier et même de prototyper certains designs. On pourrait décrire ce processus d’«inspiration organisée». Tout au long de ce processus, j’examine toutes les possibilités de remplacer la froideur industrielle par une touche d’humanité, tout en mettant l’esprit humain en avant. gc De nature, j’ai principalement tendance à adopter une approche tactile avec chaque nouveau projet. J’étudie chacun des matériaux et les idées nouvelles me viennent. Je

place différents objets et diverses textures côte à côte et j’essaie de combiner les couleurs et les formes pour donner une autre dimension au concept, à la recherche d’une connexion plus profonde. Tout en essayant de trouver le parfait équilibre entre forme et fonction, je laisse libre cours à mon imagination et fais converger toutes les directions diverses et variées vers une conception finale. Quels sont selon vous les éléments constitutifs d’un bon design de salle de bain? mw Le design joue dans son ensemble un rôle crucial car c’est lui qui permet la connexion avec l’esprit humain au sein de cet espace intime dédié à la régénération qu’est la salle de bain. Je pense qu’un design de salle de bain réussi est, à l’instar de cette collection, un design qui exprime une nature juxtaposant les éléments, qui les mélange et les harmonise de manière à les faire interagir entre eux, mais aussi avec vous. gc Le design des salles de bain ne doit pas être considéré comme ayant un but différent des autres projets de conception. Quelle que soit sa localisation, un bon design est un design qui parvient à inspirer et créer du sens. Dans la salle de bain, notre objectif consiste tout particulièrement à parfaire le design afin de s’y sentir le plus choyé possible. Souvent fantaisistes, romantiques, voire parfois pompeux, vos designs captent l’attention. Quel est le design de votre propre espace intérieur? mw Le style de mon intérieur exprime un certain sens d’éclectisme dynamique ponctué d’accents modernes. J’ai conçu chaque pièce de manière à ce qu’elle soit accueillante et à ce qu’elle surprenne et enchante chacune des personnes qui y passent. Je veux que chaque passage dans une pièce soit synonyme de découverte et d’éveil intérieur. La polyvalence des atmosphères est le propre de l’espace global. Avec un ensemble constitué de marbre, de verre, de textiles et d’acier inoxydable, j’ai délibérément orchestré des atmosphères complémentaires. gc Mon espace intérieur est intimiste. Sa touche personnelle a un côté accueillant. Fait principalement de grands espaces ouverts, il compte également des zones davantage empreintes de chaleur. J’ai rempli l’espace d’objets imprégnés d’histoire et de souvenirs de mes expériences.

Quali sono stati gli aspetti più interessanti della collaborazione con Laufen? mw Laufen è famosa in tutto il mondo per l’eccellenza nella generazione di idee per la creazione di bagni in stile classico e contemporaneo. L’azienda è la personificazione di uno spirito che ama la sperimentazione. L’impulso innovativo dei designer si manifesta nella personalità di questo marchio svizzero estremamente tradizionale da cui scaturisce una simbiosi tra design, qualità e funzionalità. L’approccio pragmatico di Laufen e la sua perseveranza nell’evoluzione costante mi hanno conquistato e ci hanno motivato a realizzare con loro un percorso verso l’innovazione. gc Oltre alle conoscenze e alla creatività che li caratterizza, a rendere piacevole la collaborazione con Laufen, dal mio punto di vista, è la fusione nel loro design svizzero di due tendenze principali: il design emotivo italiano proveniente da sud e la tradizione nordica caratterizzata da precisione e chiarezza di design. Nel loro livello qualitativo, ciò si manifesta in due aspetti: il know-how produttivo che imprimono a ogni loro creazione e l’elevato livello di vantaggi pratici che il cliente ne ricava. Quali sfide tecniche avete dovuto affrontare durante la progettazione della nuova collezione per il bagno di Laufen? mw L’ambientazione del bagno non prescinderà mai dall’elegante funzionalità e quindi abbiamo disegnato ciascun elemento in modo da inserirsi perfettamente in questa collezione omogenea. Per la prima volta il materiale ceramico SaphirKeramik è stato utilizzato per dar vita a forme molto classiche e iconografiche. Ciò ha comportato una certa curva di apprendimento per noi. Tuttavia abbiamo scoperto che questo materiale igienico, altamente resistente all’usura e riciclabile, si adattava perfettamente alle concezioni di design che ci sforzavamo di ottenere. Il materiale ceramico SaphirKeramik ci ha offerto dunque un’opportunità unica per celebrare la bellezza della ceramica sottile con le nostre eleganti forme addolcite. gc Abbiamo scoperto che il materiale ceramico SaphirKeramik è leggero e versatile, ma robusto e

malleabile allo stesso tempo. Queste caratteristiche ci hanno permesso di realizzare molte varianti durante la progettazione di ciascuna delle opzioni per l’uso quotidiano. Il suo profilo slanciato si adatta a qualsiasi ambientazione, dallo stile classico allo stile contemporaneo, oltre a essere un materiale ecologico. Pur essendo estremamente resistente, SaphirKeramik ci ha comunque permesso di creare linee architettoniche minimaliste. In passato avete realizzato molti progetti di design di interni per alberghi. In che termini questa vostra esperienza ha influito sulla progettazione della nuova collezione per il bagno di Laufen? mw Il bello dei nostri progetti è che impariamo qualcosa di nuovo da qualsiasi cosa facciamo. Quindi con ogni progetto scopriamo qualcosa che ci interessa sperimentare, oppure conosciamo un nuovo materiale che ci permetterà di esplorare forme nuove e combinazioni inedite. Nel nostro percorso abbiamo appreso quali sono le cose che la gente considera interessanti, cosa gli risulta stimolante e crea significato. Tutto ciò l’abbiamo infuso nella nuova collezione per il bagno di Laufen. gc Tutti i progetti di interni che abbiamo realizzato differiscono tra loro e questo ci ha obbligato a sviluppare visioni sempre inedite. Abbiamo progettato grandi superfici e spazi ridotti. Abbiamo lavorato con un’infinità di materiali differenti. Facendolo abbiamo sviluppato nuove concezioni che si ispirano sempre, in qualche aspetto, a tutti i progetti che abbiamo realizzato in precedenza. Rispetto alla nuova collezione per il bagno di Laufen, questo approccio ci ha dato la sicurezza necessaria per realizzare accostamenti di legno e ceramica, o di metalli architettonici a vetro e specchi. Qual è il vostro processo creativo? Come affrontate un nuovo progetto? mw L’approccio iniziale di un progetto per me si muove su vari percorsi. Mi piace lasciarmi andare al sogno ad occhi aperti, ma anche collaborare e rilanciare idee provenienti da altri. Mi prendo il tempo di buttare giù schizzi, scrivere e addirittura di creare prototipi del progetto. Il mio processo creativo può essere descritto come ispirazione organizzata. Nel corso di questo lavoro, mi sforzo di trovare la maniera di sostituire la freddezza industriale con l’umanità, concedendo maggiore spazio allo spirito umano. gc Il mio approccio a un nuovo progetto è in gran parte di tipo tattile. Ricavo nuove idee durante lo studio dei materiali. Sovrappongo oggetti e consistenze, sperimento per tro-

vare combinazioni di colori e forme che mi permettano di aggiungere un altro strato concettuale, quindi un livello di connessione più profondo. Lascio spaziare la mente durante la ricerca dell’equilibrio tra forma e funzione e quindi canalizzo tutte le varie direzioni intraprese verso un design finito. Secondo voi in cosa consiste un buon design per il bagno? mw Il design totale dell’ambientazione ha un ruolo strategico nello stabilire una connessione con lo spirito umano in questo spazio intimo di rigenerazione. Credo che un buon design per il bagno, come avviene in gran parte in questa collezione, sia il design che sa esprimere uno spirito di sovrapposizione, fondendo e combinando elementi in modo che non solo funzionino bene tra loro, ma anche rispetto all’individuo. gc Il design del bagno non dovrebbe essere considerato come un design i cui obiettivi differiscono in qualche modo da qualsiasi altro progetto di design. Indipendentemente dalla postazione, il design riuscito è quello che sa stabilire una connessione e che crea significato per le persone. Nello specifico, in bagno il nostro obiettivo è il perfezionamento di un design che sappia dar vita a uno spazio privato in cui sentirsi coccolati. I vostri progetti spesso sono vistosi, giocosi, romantici, talora pomposi. Com’è il design di interni a casa vostra? mw Il mio design personale esprime un senso di eclettismo dinamico costellato da accenti moderni. Ho progettato ciascuna stanza pensandola come ambiente accogliente che sorprende e diverte gli ospiti. Desidero che il visitatore scopra ogni volta qualcosa di nuovo in una stanza e in sé stesso. Le ambientazioni versatili definiscono lo spazio generale. Con un insieme di marmo, vetro, tessili e acciaio inossidabile ho orchestrato appositamente atmosfere complementari. Dagli elettrodomestici fino ad arredamento, opere d’arte e luci, ciascuna stanza resta in simbiosi con l’intera casa. gc La mia casa ha uno spirito intimo. La sensazione di accoglienza è data dall’ambientazione personalizzata. Pur comprendendo spazi open space, non è priva di aree più raccolte. Ho riempito lo spazio con souvenir storici e memorie di esperienze vissute caratterizzati da un’estrema varietà di consistenze e forme.
