You’ll Come A Long Way Baby: About Our Auctioneer, Laura Michalek

!

Fundraising Auctioneer Laura Michalek still relies on the endurance and discipline she possessed when at the age of 15, she was the first female winner of the Chicago Marathon. While Ms. Michalek has hardly missed a day of running since then, it’s this intention to excel at what she loves that is most evident. “To me Auctioneering is about giving a lot of yourself, before and during the event, in a way that most folks wouldn’t expect.” Her style, fundraising insight, and commitment to her clients, and their mission, not only sets her apart, but has created a career beyond Ms. Michalek’s wildest dreams. “I’ve always been deeply interested in how non-profits I care about are going to sustain themselves, so it is nothing less than a thrill to know I can personally and professionally be part of that.” For 15 years prior to becoming a full time Fundraising Professional, Ms. Michalek owned and operated several nationally recognized vintage modern furniture stores in Seattle. “My critical eye, intuition, and energy level has been pretty consistent all these years, so whenever I set out to do something, it’s the same set of skills, just a slightly more developed new chapter.” As the youngest winner in the history of the Chicago Marathon, it has not been lost on Ms. Michalek that this experience informed her whole life. “When I start Auctioneering, it’s like being in the starting block all over again, and I still set out to win, however this time it’s for the organization I’m representing.” To hear what folks are saying about Ms. Michalek visit www.lauramichalek.com or email auctioneer@lauramichalek.com or call direct at 206.464.0850.

Signed Nikki McClure Summon Poster Original signed and framed Summon 18x24 poster by Olympia artist, activist and mother, Nikki McClure. Nikki is known for her painstakingly intricate and beautiful paper cuts. Armed with an x-acto knife, she cuts out her images from a single sheet of paper and creates a bold language that translates the complex poetry of motherhood, nature, and activism into a simple and endearing picture. As one of the more prominent visual artists involved with Olympia-based record labels K and Kill Rock Stars, as well as the Riot Grrrl movement in the early nineties, Nikki's work still embodies the fiercely independent fire that fueled the passion and the creativity of that time period.

Night of eater with Patti and Jenny! Enjoy a night of theater with LWGMS's two favorite drama teachers! Ms. Hearn and Ms. Zavatsky will take four students to see the Broadway tour of the high-stepping tapper Anything Goes at Seattle's 5th Avenue Theatre (October 15-November 3, 2013). The New York Times called this 2011 Tony Award-winner for Best Revival “Zesty...with knockout numbers and white hot dancing.” The show is packed with extraordinary Cole Porter songs – from “You’re the Top” and “I Get a Kick Out of You” to “It’s De-Lovely” and, of course, “Anything Goes.” Throw in a boatload of madcap Marx Brothersstyle comedy, enough tap dancing to start an earthquake, and all the swanky Art Deco glamour of an era gone by (aboard a transatlantic ocean liner no less) and you have a saucy and splendid night at the theater! Fine Print: Mutually agreeable times. Patti and Jenny will contact the winners to arrange.

Fund-a-Need LWGMS STEAM Studio Over their three years at LWGMS, our students will cycle through a core curriculum integrating the arts with science, technology, engineering, and math. Embedded in all disciplines will be an emphasis on Design Thinking as a way of fostering fluency in creative thinking skills to solve 21st century problems. Problem-solving, risk-taking, and mistake-making are necessary skills to practice, especially at the middle school level and especially for girls. According to national education researchers, students experienced and familiar with Design Thinking (empathize, identify, ideate, prototype, and test) demonstrate resiliency and approach problems collaboratively and creatively; the heart of STEAM education.

Some of the benefits of learning through Design Thinking: • Ability and confidence to delve into unknown areas, interview effectively, uncover underlying needs, and test hypotheses • Critical thinking, synthesis of information • Empathy, deep curiosity, persistence • Ability to question assumptions and think “outside the box” • Understanding that collaboration can accomplish a great deal, openness to others’ ideas • Ability to remain on task, discuss differing opinions with respect, share the workload • Brainstorming skills in writing, drawing, three-dimensional building • Ability to shift one’s thinking to a more playful, non-judging, idea-rich mode when needed • Openness, flexibility, ability to hold one’s ideas loosely, “what-if ” thinking 16

• Action orientation, an open attitude, experience with a wide variety of tools and materials, a can-do attitude facilitating invention of ways to create prototypes, a pioneering attitude • A new approach to failure by viewing it as an invaluable information source rather than a personal affront • Active seeking and thorough evaluation of user feedback, reinvention or modification of thinking and/or design based on evaluation • Basic project-management skills: how to prioritize, sequence, and plan, how to assess progress and adjust • Ability to take risks and create • Empowerment, motivation, and problem-solving skills

Outfitting an integrated and fully functional STEAM Studio to support our program will require funding. With your help this evening, a STEAM Studio at L-Dub will enable our teachers to take all of our students more deeply into the creative process by making available the necessary tools to every one of our students. The STEAM Studio will be outfitted with: • A designated STEAM teacher and technology support staff • An eight station iMac Design Lab • Filming equipment for digital storytelling (digital video cameras, sound equipment, mics, green screen, editing software) • Smart board (integrated with the computers as a teaching tool) • 3D printer (produces 3D models – great for industrial design problems/engineering) • Power tools and shop tools (for design and build courses) • Related software (photoshop, illustrator, etc.)

ank you for supporting STEAM at LWGMS! 17

Fund-a-need

e Cary Wyatt McRae Scholarship Fund The Cary Wyatt McRae Memorial Scholarship Fund was established when we lost our beloved friend and “school mom,” Cary McRae. The money raised for this scholarship enhances our financial aid budget to enable all girls admitted to attend LWGMS regardless of their family’s financial situation. This was a core value for Cary, and we are grateful to continue her legacy. In actuality, every family at LWGMS receives financial assistance – the true cost of an LWGMS education exceeds tuition charged. The journey each student embarks upon, the joy she feels as she accomplishes something she never dreamed possible, the security she knows as she grows more comfortable in expressing her authentic self, and the friendships and connections she makes at L-Dub over her three years, however, are priceless. Please honor Cary’s memory and help us support every student and every family at LWGMS and raise your paddle high and often in the name of The Cary Wyatt McRae Scholarship Fund.
