Dear reader, It is not without a certain amount of pride that I am introducing to you the first edition of LXRY. A new quarterly magazine full of practical and useful information for any new comer to Dubai as well as for the one that has already visited the city but wants to stay updated with its last offers. The creators of LXRY have built a name in the Dutch Hotel sector with the publication of the popular Hello Amsterdam magazine. With LXRY we bring this successful formula to you: a helping hand to guide you through the city just to make sure that you do not miss the most exciting and interesting places, as there are so many of those venues here that a helping hand is surely appreciated. Welcome to the most dynamic city of the United Arab Emirates and one of the greatest cities of the region. A city where the West meets the East. If we look at the development of Dubai in the past two decennia there is one thing that appears clearly above all: it is a city that keeps on innovating itself. Since his Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum the Ruler of Dubai announced in 2013 his vision to turn Dubai into the ultimate leisure destination and to attract 20 million visitors by 2020 - the year Dubai will host the Expo 2020 - the tourism sector has seen rapid growth. The huge investments in the city infrastructure over past years have paid off. Besides some excellent roads, a network of taxi’s, metro’s, a brandnew Tramway in the Dubai Marina and a unique Monorail

at the majestic Palm Island the infrastructure is something the city is proud of. This year alone four different theme parks have been launched, and a brand new Opera House has opened its doors. Besides that, the city has plenty of must-visit places. It is home to some of the most impressive world records and that is not all: it is also the ultimate shopping destination of the region. LXRY main objective is to help you find the best attractions of the city: the best shopping malls, the coolest clubs and bars, the finest restaurant, and the most unique boutiques that are on offer. We basically made a fine first selection of the most interesting sites to visit in your district of the city, wherever your hotel could be located. We are very proud to present to you this first ever edition, and we hope you enjoy reading it. We are currently working hard on a fresh website so that you will be able to keep up to date with the latest developments in Dubai. On behalf of the team that created this first editing of LXRY we hope that our selection will be of help during your stay. But above all we wish you a great stay in the wonderful city of Dubai. SPOTLIGHT
Dubai is considered the most dynamic Emirate out of the federation of seven mini states that together form the United Arab Emirates. Visiting Dubai is like being on a roller coaster ride that never ends, with countless things to see and to do. On top of that Dubai has a tropical climate with warm summers and an average winter temperature of 23 °C (73 °F) which makes the city a tourist destination all year round. There are as many historical places to visit as modern ones. Dubai Marina Take a stroll on the boulevard of the Dubai Marina, a neatly developed artificial canal city, built along a three km (two-mile) stretch of the Arabian Gulf shoreline. Besides residential towers, a yacht harbour from where daily excursions can be taken, it houses a multi-level shopping mall and some of Dubai’s finest restaurants and nightclubs. The Marina has an easy connection with the Dubai Metro, and is the only place with a Tramway which offers an excellent way of exploring this part of the city. Burj Khalifa Impress yourself in Downtown Dubai with a tour up the Burj Khalifa
(Arabic for Khalifa Tower) with 829.8 m (2,722 ft) the tallest standing structure in the world. Experience breathtaking panoramic views from the 148th floor at 555 m (1,821 ft), before indulging in a shopping spree in the immense Dubai Mall. Go crazy for designer brands or just sit back in one of the many coffee shops and watch the beautiful Dubai Fountain next to the newly build Dubai Opera. International Icon Tired of shopping? Visit one of the Emirates theme parks and water parks, or one of the many beaches. Have a relaxed afternoon in the sun against the backdrop of what has become Dubai’s first international icon, the Burj al Arab, the astounding five-star hotel built in the shape of a ship sail. The coast also offers some excellent restaurants to watch the sun set. It also has a long jogging track providing the sporty visitors a great opportunity for morning runs or a late night romantic walk. Few places can match the vibrancy of Dubai’s nightlife; the variety of its cuisine; the many international festivals; the wide variety of international sport events. There is really something to see and do for everyone in Dubai.

DUBAI OPERA
Located at what has been defined as ‘the most prestigious square kilometer in the world’ and right next to the massive Burj Khalifa in Downtown Dubai, the Dubai Opera is the city new center for culture and arts. It opened on August, 31st 2016 with a performance by the famed Spanish tenor Placido Domingo. After opening its doors, the new opera house in Dubai has been breathing success. The impressive dhow-shaped building of the Dubai Opera has internationally been dubbed ‘a masterpiece of contemporary design’. The almost 2,000 seat opera house, designed by Danish architect Janus Rostock, has the capability to shift into three different modes. The ultra-modern venue can in fact be transformed from a theatre into a concert hall or alternatively into a ‘flat floor’ to become an event hall. This flexibility enables the Dubai Opera to host a wide variety of performances and events. It must be also said that such a venue is quite unique in the region. The Omani capital Muscat is in fact the only other regional city hosting an opera house. It is widely expected that with the opening of this new

venue Dubai will play a central role in the cultural development of the region, turning the city of Dubai into a new cultural hub. The Dubai Opera features a state-of-the-art audio-visual technology and support systems to ensure an unrivalled events experience. The core of the structure contains Dubai Opera’s main stage, orchestra and seating areas, as well as the beautiful sky garden and restaurants, while the elongated hall area houses waiting areas, taxi-drop off area and parking. All designed with the convenience of the visitors in mind. In the first six months of operations the list of events in program is already quite impressive. Besides the famous Opera Giselle and other internationally famed shows such as West Side Story and Les Misérables, there is a mixed program including classical Arabic music to ballet, modern dance performances and art exhibitions. DISCOVER DUBAI DEIRA & BUR DUBAI
Every issue of LXRY Dubai will zoom into one very special location of the Emirate of Dubai. We will look in depth at something worth discovering. In this first edition of LXRY we are taking a closer look at Bur Dubai and Deira: two of the most famous historic districts of the city. Bur Dubai is located on the western side of the Dubai Creek and is quite easy to access either by taxi or by the Dubai Metro. This historic part of the city houses numerous popular places to see and visit such as several renovated historic buildings, souks and museums.
26
SPOTLIGHT
The name ‘Bur Dubai’ literally means ‘Center Dubai’ or ‘Mainland Dubai’. The district is home to several beautiful sites and mosques. The famous ‘Grand Mosque’ has a unique 70-metre (230 ft.) high minaret - the tallest in the city - that resembles a lighthouse from where beautiful pictures can be taken. Besides that, a visit to the impressive Hindu temple situated north of the Grand Mosque on the bank of the Creek is also a must see site. Al Fahidi Fortress Other attractions worth visiting in Bur Dubai are the Dubai Museum, the Heritage & Diving Villages, and, on a totally different spirit, the chic Burjuman shopping mall. The Dubai museum is currently the most relevant museum of the Emirate. It is located in the Al Fahidi fortress and contains many old artifacts. Al Fahidi fortress is the oldest existing building of the Emirate. It was built in 1787 and definitely a must-see site for those who are interested in the history of the Dubai. Nearby the same Al Shindagha neighborhood, you can find the
Heritage & Diving Villages. Both give the visitors a small insight of the Emirati traditional way of life. They display many items that recall the old customs, traditions, professions and local craftsmanship. Deira Good bargains and the Arabic tradition of doing trade can be experienced at the old textile souk. Numerous shopping streets are located in the souk near the Abra Boat Station, from where you can, for as little as 1 AED, take a boat trip on the Dubai Creek to Deira. This part of the historic city is located on the Eastern side of the Creek, where most of the other well-known souks are located. In Deira you can smell a mix of fragrances and buy fresh imported spices at the spice souk, find excellent deals on jewelry at the Gold souk, or buy the latest electronic devices. Located not far from there, the renovated Burjuman shopping mall is an excellent stopover for those who are looking for designer fashion. It all depends on what you are looking for.

THE BEST BARS OF DUBAI
When newly arriving in a city as electrifying as Dubai it is often a challenge to decide where to go out. Dubai has countless bars and cozy cafés to offer, but you should be aware that not all of them serve alcohol as you would probably expect. The laws and customs in the Emirate are in fact quite strict on that and it is essential to know how this system works. The overall rule is that alcoholic drinks are only served in licensed hotels and clubs that are generally linked to a hotel, or nearby one. The visitor should always be aware that it is a punishable offence to drink, or to be under the influence of alcohol, outside those licensed premises. The legal age for drinking alcohol is 21 and driving under the influence of whatever amount of alcohol (yes, even a single beer) is strictly prohibited. Breaking these rules could and will bring serious consequences that will ruin your welldeserved vacation. See-and-be-seen You have probably heard before that Dubai is home to some of the trendiest and see-and-be-seen bars in the world. Some of them are uniquely designed outdoor drinking spots with far-reaching skyline views. Everything is there from busy hotel hotspots to laid back lounge café’s under the moonlight. Many of the city’s nicest bars are located at the beachside in the Jumeirah district. Here you can relax in a comfortable seat under the stars, catch up with some friends or just dance a bit. Several of the city’s more sophisticated bars are situated on the higher floors offering breathtaking skyscraper views, which you don’t want to miss.

Hardwell
HANG OUT WITH THE BIGGEST DJ IN THE WORLD Music maturity came swiftly for the now seasoned-veteran Robbert van de Corput, better known as Hardwell. At the age of 25, the young Dutch titan capped off a 10 year journey when he was crowned World’s #1 DJ in the 2013 DJ Mag Top 100 DJs Poll cementing his position as the electronic scenes newest superstar DJ and becoming the youngest ever winner of the coveted Top 100 DJs award. Photographer GERARD HENNINGER
In 2014 the Dutch megastar did it again - being crowned World’s #1 DJ in the 2014 edition of DJ Mag’s Top 100 DJs Poll for a second consecutive year. Despite relinquishing his crown in 2015, though still taking the highly respectable secondplace spot, it’s clear that Hardwell has already created a legacy that would put most of his counterparts to shame. This award-winning DJ, producer, musician, label owner and lover of all things music has not only helped shape the current state of EDM, but has left an everlasting imprint on it. Label boss of Revealed Recordings, home to an ever-growing plethora of fresh and exciting new talent, Hardwell’s own studio output saw the release of his debut album United We Are in January 2015, featuring a host of collaborations with the likes of Jason Derulo, Fatman Scoop and Tiësto to name but a few. The studio output in 2016 remained strong as ever with Hardwell releasing his Afrojack collaboration ‘Hollywood’ that gained huge momentum at events including Canada’s Solaris, DJ Mag’s Top 100 DJ’s tour in Belarus and many more. Additional releases across the year included a co-crafted single with emerging Dutch star Thomas Newson that marked the 250th Revealed Recordings releases, reuniting with singer-songwriter Jake Reese for the hit single ‘Run Wild’, a
collaboration with KURA on ‘Calavera’, a remix of Moby’s legendary anthem ‘Go’ and the official release of ‘Live The Night’ with W&W and Lil Jon. For August 2016 Hardwell made available his single and collaboration with UK Garage legend Craig David, ‘No Holding Back’, which first premiered live during Hardwell’s Miami Ultra Music Festival set. August 2016 also marked the month that Hardwell capped off the last I Am Hardwell – United We Are show with a truly bold and spectacular show. With both I Am Hardwell tours combined spanning a four-year period, Hardwell set out to create a truly breathtaking final show that would leave a timeless memory for the fans. Becoming the first DJ to ever stage an event at the iconic Hockenheim racing circuit in Germany, Hardwell took elements from the first I Am Hardwell show and elements from the second I Am Hardwell show and to build a unique new stage production for the final show like never seen before. In its four-year period the tour ran across six continents and recorded sold out shows in many of the biggest music arenas on the planet and connected Hardwell with hundreds and thousands of fans the world over. Deciding to utilise his global appeal for social change Hardwell stepped into the
world of philanthropy in 2015 by joining hands with international music agency, Anna Agency and launching the United We Are Foundation. The first project which launched on December 13th in one of India’s largest stadiums, the D.Y. Patil Stadium in Mumbai, saw Hardwell joined by 70,000+ fans on his own personal guest list to unite for an occasion to “make a social difference” against the lack of education for underprivileged children living in the slums of Mumbai. The spectacular charity concert branded the ‘World’s Biggest Guest List’, saw UWAF figurehead and concert host Hardwell deliver not only an historical event with high impact, but also bring visibility and awareness around the muchneeded issue of education for young children in India. In October 2013, during Amsterdam Dance Event, Hardwell held the world premiere of his ‘I Am Hardwell’ documentary in Amsterdam’s oldest and most famous cinema, Tuschinski. The documentary provides a captivating inside-look on Hardwell’s rise. With the motto - "If you can dream it, you can do it”. 2015 saw the release of the sequel film ‘I AM Hardwell – Living The Dream’, again premiered during Amsterdam Dance Event and following Hardwell on his world tour, asking the question "The problem

with dreams is what happens once they've come true?". Hardwell unveiled the sequel to his 2013 documentary with a new film in 2015 titled ‘I Am Hardwell – Living The Dream’. Even more than the previous documentary ‘I AM Hardwell – Living the dream’ lets you experience the music. Starting with the 27-year-old Robbert van de Corput, working on new musical ideas in his studio, followed by the mass hysteria in Delhi and unprecedented footage of the ‘I AM Hardwell’ concert shows where ten thousands of people worldwide shared in the music, passion and energy of what a Hardwell show is all about. It’s a gateway into the life of a musical pioneer on the road to accessing the peak of his artistic powers. But it’s his relationship with his fans that sets him apart from his peers. Through

his popular Q&A series on YouTube Hardwell’s personal side is displayed, where he answers the most begging of questions his fans have to offer. As said by Hardwell himself, “With the opportunities of social media today, it's super easy to be in direct contact with your fans, however it's impossible to respond to each and everyone through Twitter or Facebook. That's why I came up with this idea, to give my fans the opportunity to ask me their questions and to have the chance to answer them in a fun and engaging way”. Taking that one step further Hardwell recently unveiled his official Hardwell Facebook Messenger Bot - becoming the first electronic music artist to create a fanfocused Bot for the platform and opening up his audience reach to a potential 900 million users worldwide.
And talking of social media his meteoric rise up into the higher echelons of the dance community has seen his fan base swell. With over 8.5 million ‘likes’ on Facebook, more than 3.4 million followers on Twitter, 3.8 million followers on Instagram and in excess of 615 million hits on his YouTube channel, Hardwell has rapidly solidified his place as one of the electronic scenes most ‘clicked on’ artists. The rise of Hardwell as a young boy from the city of Breda into a ripened international super-heavyweight has become an inspiring tale for all. Coming full circle from a dream to reality of wanting to become the #1 DJ in the World, we can be assured that the Hardwell name, face, and sound is a force that will drive electronic dance music for years to come.

WELCOME TO THE ULTIMATE SHOPPERS’ PARADISE It is well known that you just need to drop the word Dubai to any woman in the world, and most probably her eyes will start twinkling and her fantasies about this ‘shopping paradise’ will start running wild. We must say that Dubai well deserves such reputation. In Dubai everything can be bought: from the latest designer brands to original traditional Arabic goods and the most fashionable jewelry. Everything is made available in a wide range of prices that suits every budget. Editor ARTHUR BLOK
36
SPOTLIGHT
So this is another recommendation from us at LXRY Dubai: when being in this dynamic city remember to dedicate at least one full day to the shopping activities. And our advice is to first explore on paper the many (and we mean really many) shopping destinations that are available all over the Emirate and then chose the mall that best suits your taste, your style and your budget. And of course, why to stop at one mall only? A first class shopping destination Dubai has achieved already many years ago its status of ‘shopping paradise’ in the region. In more recent years however this reputation has grown massively to quickly reach a status of worldwide recognition. And many international surveys prove this assumption to be right year after year. This might be due to the fact that this unique city never stops to reinvent itself: besides the continuous addition of new malls, the existing malls are continuously being renovated, expanded with one or more levels, or simply completely redesigned to match the changing desires of its clientele. It this ongoing process of renewal that makes Dubai a destination that you can keep on visiting over and over again.
A mall to match your taste There is always a mall in Dubai that matches your specific taste. If you are looking for a mix of entertainment and shopping you should try some of the larger malls such as the Mall of the Emirates with the world renowned indoor Ski slope, or get lost in the huge Dubai Mall and try out the Ice Skate Ring. At the Ibn Battuta Mall - themed around the parts of the world that were visited by this Medieval Moroccan Muslim traveler and scholar - there is always something to discover. All of them of course easy reachable with Dubai Metro or taxi. If you are looking instead for a real bargain, try the Outlet Mall and the brand new Outlet Village just opened in October. And this is just to mention a few, as the list of existing malls is really infinite and always growing. Dubai Shopping Festival Finally, to confirm its reputation, the Dubai Shopping festival, organized by the government of Dubai since 1996, takes place every year from late December till the end of January. This festival is now so famous in the whole world that it generates a considerable annual peak in the number of tourists arriving (and shopping) in the Emirate at that time of the year.

DUBAI SHOPPING MALLS 38
SHOPPING
Let’s face it: the amount of shopping space already available in the Emirate is almost unbelievable. Dubai's malls currently offer a total of more than 13 hundred square kilometers (14 million ft2) of shopping space. Surely more than enough even for the most passionate shopper! Believe it or not, in the coming few years this number is set to more than double with the opening of several new malls. Malls are there in all sizes and themes. They range from the large to the gigantic, and the designs are often as impressive as the sheer scale of what lies within. One mall offers a giant Ski Slope, another a huge Ice Skate Ring. Many feature Family Entertainments Centers, cinemas, nightclubs, renowned restaurants and bars, and much, much more for you not to get bored when visiting the city. LXRY Dubai made a selection of some of the best malls around, with their most distinctive characteristics. IBN BATTUTA MALL In 1335 a young Moroccan man of just 21 years set out to explore the world. His journey spanned 24 years and six different countries Tunisia, Egypt, Persia, India, China and Andalusia. This extraordinary adventurer was named Ibn Battuta. His life and travels have inspired the development of a huge mall carrying its name and located north of the Dubai Marina, on the highway to Abu Dhabi. While walking in this mall the visitor will find that all interior themes and names of the different sections are drawn after the travels of this world explorer.
Every separate court is in fact themed by a specific region and displays nice-to-know facts about that specific part of the world. Ibn Battuta Mall offers, beside shopping, various top restaurants and has a huge food court with a large variety of choice. A mix of history, culture and the story of a remarkable adventure all along the shopping trail, making the mall one of Dubai’s most exciting shopping and retail destinations. DUBAI MARINA MALL Right in the center of the extravagant Dubai Marina, the Marina Mall offers its visitors a fine selection of shops and eateries. Marina Mall is best described as ‘a modern shopping and lifestyle destination’ popular by residents and visitors of this part of the city. With more than 130 outlets and a gross leasable area of more than 36 square km (390,000 ft2) spread across four levels, this mall features a retail mix of high street fashion brands, al fresco waterfront dining, a supermarket and a good entertainment offer. Although not the largest of them all, Dubai Marina Mall has been designed with the customer in mind. The result is a relaxed, and stylish environment which makes spending time in the mall quite effortless and enjoyable. The Magic of
DUBAI
IF THERE IS ONE CITY IN THE WORLD THAT HAS DONE WONDERS IN THE LAST 25 YEARS TO ATTRACT VISITORS IT IS DUBAI. MULTIPLE WORLD RECORDS HAVE BEEN BROKEN IN DIFFERENT FIELDS BY THIS CITY YEAR AFTER YEAR. WITHOUT DOUBTS THIS IS A PLACE THAT HAS A GRANDIOSE TOUCH IN ALL ITS ASPECTS: IT IS TRULY SOMETHING YOU HAVE TO EXPERIENCE BY YOURSELF IN ORDER TO FULLY UNDERSTAND. Editor ARTHUR BLOK
The magic of being in Dubai is in fact sometimes hard to explain to an outsider. It is a city where basically everything is possible, without any limits. Think of the unthinkable and Dubai has it! Or it is planning to create it.One of the running jokes in Dubai is that it holds the world record for being the city with the most world records. From the world’s highest towers, the world longest graffiti display to world’s biggest billboard, and the list goes on. It is almost impossible to drive through town without being faced with one of its exciting accomplishments. LXRY Dubai has made a selection of the most remarkable and majestic of such records.
six-lane sub-sea Tunnel connects Palm Jumeirah to the mainland. To facilitate the tourists and make life easier for residents a monorail train, connected to the Marina Tramway, can also be used. A perfect way of transporting yourself on a fun day out, and an excellent opportunity to take some nice pictures along the way.
Burj Al Arab & Palm Island
Dubai Marina
If there is one other accomplishment that attracted the eye of the world it is the creation of the Palm Island, locally known as the Palm Jumeirah, the flagship project of one of Dubai’s leading developers Nakheel. It is the world’s largest man-made island: comprised of a two-kilometer-long ‘branch’, and a crown made up of 17 fronds and a surrounding crescent. When flying in to Dubai International Airport you can’t miss the amazing view of the Palm from the sky. The immense project was launched in 2001 and by the end of 2006 the island's first residences moved in. Since that moment the tourism, leisure and retail elements of the island have been further developed, creating a spectacular, world-renowned residential and tourism destination. Most famous is the land-mark Atlantis hotel on the top of the island and the huge waterpark attached to it. A
But records are there to be broken. Before the Princess Tower was finished the construction of an even higher residential tower in the city was launched. The tower named the Pentominium will be, upon completion, a stunning 122-storey, 516 meter (1,693 ft.) supertall skyscraper. Construction on the tower has been slowed down since 2011 due to the Global Financial Crisis, but it is expected that its construction will continue in 2017.
The world fame of Dubai had a first jump with the completion of the Burj Al Arab, the first landmark build on an artificial island off Jumeirah Road. This seven-star hotel is to Dubai what the Statue of Liberty is for New York. It was completed in 1999 and comes, besides the über-deluxe rooms, with a fleet of chauffeur-driven Rolls Royce limousines, and it its own helipad. This helipad became itself world famous when an TV ad was aired showing Roger Federer playing a tennis match with Andre Agassi on it to promote the Dubai Duty Free Tennis Championship in 2005.

The Palm is full of exclusive apartments, and villa’s obviously targeting the well-heeled clientele. For the super-rich who fancy a little more “private space” can even purchase their own private island on a man-made archipelago shaped like a map of the world, properly named The World and located a bit further off the coast of Dubai. Not far from The Palm Jumeirah lies another astonishing project full of world records which is the Dubai Marina: an artificial canal city that stretches over more than three km of Arabian Gulf shoreline. It is the world’s largest man-made marina full of restaurants, cafés and boutiques. The number of attractions in it is countless. To start with the Princess Tower: one of the eye-catching skyscrapers with a crown-shaped rooftop. It has sealed its place in the Guinness Book of World Records with its 414 meter (1,358 ft.), and 107 floors the Princess Tower has been officially recognized as the world’s tallest residential building. When the tower was completed in 2012 it shot the Dubai Marina area into the global spotlight and was responsible for a rise in residential prices.
Another interesting tower in the Marina area is the curved Cayan Tower, initially named not without a reason Infinity Tower: a

Spanning on the coast of the Marina is the Jumeirah Beach Residence (JBR) project consisting of 40 high-rise towers that develop for a total space of two square kilometers. This alone makes JBR the largest single-phase residential development in the world. Here a tip: use the Marina Tramway for a complete tour of the Marina and JBR area. You will not be disappointed.
Downtown Dubai
Every tourist that lands in Dubai spends at least one day in the Dubai Mall the top shopping destination of the Emirate (besides the Mall of the Emirates with its famous ski slope), and of the whole region. As you might expect the mall itself is also retaining a world record: it is the largest mall in the world by total area. Besides a huge aquarium and indoor zoo and the SEGA themed entertainment center, the mall houses the world’s largest sweet shop, ‘Candylicious’, spanning over 930 square meter (10,000 ft2). For many years in a row now the number of Dubai Mall visitors saw a constant increase. To give just an indication: in 2012 more than 65 million people shopped in the mall, but this already stunning number increased to almost 80 million in 2015. Maybe the most renowned of them all and another majestic achievement in DownTown is the all famous Burj Khalifa Tower. An accomplishment that shows the ‘can-do’ spirit of the city. A must-see and must-experience building that rises gracefully from the desert, and sometimes is higher than the clouds. With its 829 meters height (2,716.5 ft.) hosting more than 200 floors, the building has 160 habitable levels, and is the tallest building in the world. There are several observation decks, while being there do not forget to visit the world’s highest restaurant located on Level 122.
Dubai Opera
Another impressive construction is the Dubai Opera, which opened its doors in September. The iconic building shaped in the shape of a traditional sailing vessel is another work of art of contemporary design, and at the same time an ode to Dubai’s maritime history. The building was designed by architect Janus Rostock and is providing Dubai a splendid venue where to host a wide variety of performances and events such as opera, theatre, ballet, orchestras, and many more. The maximum capacity is 2,000 people, and the building is designed in such a way that an impeccable acoustic environment for a perfect sound quality is guaranteed.
Dubai Frame and other ongoing projects
One of the latest iconic landmarks in the city is the Dubai Frame located in Zabeel park. One of the constructions that you also just need to see for yourself when visiting the city. The structure - 90 percent complete when this edition of LXRY Dubai went to press looks like a giant picture frame and has two 150 meter towers that are connected by a 100 square meter bridge. From the bridge there will be some majestic panoramic views of all the major buildings and areas of Dubai. The walkway is set to have a huge glass panel just like the glass elevators on both sides. Furthermore, the construction of The Tower at the Dubai Creek Harbour has started. This new tower is set to be some 100 meter taller than the Burj Khalifa when completed. The developers behind the US$1 billion tower emphasized that it will represent the nation like The Eiffel Tower. Ironically, but maybe not just by chance, please note that while the Eiffel Tower was built for the 1889 Paris Expo, The Tower is scheduled to be finished before 2020, the year in which Dubai will host its own World Expo.
Future projects
It has been said many times: Dubai is an ambitious city where the unthinkable and unimaginable is made possible. In order to keep on attracting visitors and be the city without limits many other ambitious projects are in fact announced for the future. One them being the Dubai Stairs: a cultural and sport project combined. With its planned with 500 stairs the project is meant to ‘symbolize the challenges and progress of Dubai’. The planned new landmark will be used as a venue for sports and events and is expected to be 100 meters high, comparable to a 25-storey building. Another futuristic project recently announced is the so called ‘Hyperloop’ transportation system. This high-speed transport system that would connect Dubai to Fujairah in just 10 minutes usually a 2,5-hour trip by car. In order to increase the rainfall in the dry Emirate there are plans to build a huge mountain on the outskirts of the city. It is generally known that the presence of mountains forces air to rise, creating clouds. In the past years the Emiratis are into the business of so called Cloud Seeding: a weather modification process designed to increase the amount of rainfall produced from clouds. This lead to a dramatic increase in the amount of rainfall in 2015 - 2016. Of course having your own mountain looks like the logical next step. Surely mountains don’t come cheap, currently a feasibility study is being conducted to see if the investment is worth it or not. This is just a small summary of plans to prove that Dubai is by far the most ambitious city on the globe year on year visited by more and more tourists. It is indeed a city full of magic. And as with all magic things, you have to experience by yourself in order to fully understand.

The Manero Peripheral is not just “any” new timepiece by Carl F. Bucherer. It’s a landmark for the family-owned brand. This new model features the calibre CFB A2050, an automatic movement that doesn’t rely on a central, view-blocking rotor to wind the mainspring; instead it uses a much more technical peripheral rotor. The Manero Peripheral is available in a 40mm case in rose gold or stainless steel.

Today’s Happy Diamonds watch is a jewellery model with a vintage and contemporary charm. The new model has more diamonds than ever and in different sizes.

– Serpenti
The snake is one of the most ancient and mythological symbols, and often represents wisdom, rebirth, and strength. The snake is also a prominent symbol in the house of Bulgari. In the 1940s the first Serpenti watches were created using a flexible bracelet made of white, yellow, or pink gold tubular links. This construction created a comfortable and elastic band. The Serpenti became an icon when Elizabeth Taylor sported one in the movie Cleopatra (1963).

– De Ville
The 39.5mm De Ville Prestige collection has attracted a large following with its classic, elegant design that oozes understated class. Pure styling and luxury finishes define this collection. The watch shown here features a two-zone black dial with Roman numeral hour indexes. The dial shows a date window, power reserve indicator and small seconds dial. The in-house Co-Axial calibre 2627 makes it all possible.
Nomos
– Tangomat
Don’t mistake this Nomos Tangomat for a design watch. Yes, it looks good, very good even, but this 38.3mm steel model is also a serious watch. The Epsilon movement used is an automatic in-house calibre made in Glashütte. It doesn’t get more serious than that. The movement is visible through the crystal sapphire glass back. The dial is galvanized, white silver-plated and the steel hands are tempered blue.

This Complication Moon is no exception.

The first definition of a cocktail appeared in 1806 in a newspaper in the United States. It stated: “Cock-tail is a stimulating liquor composed of spirits of any kind, sugar, water and bitters”. Roughly this still is the definition of a cocktail. Water can be replaced by ice, and many cocktails include sour ingredients as well, whether it’s fresh citrus juices or other acidic liquids.

The Cocktail ABC If the term ‘cocktail’ ism. A cocktail is a very popular term for mixed drinks, but the term is often miss-used. There are many definitions and variations to be found. When may a drink be called a ‘cocktail’ and when is it just a mixed drink? To simplify matters: ‘any beverage that contains three or more ingredients, and if at least one of those ingredients is alcohol’ may be called a cocktail. EXPERIENCE BANKSY'S STREET ART IN DUBAI
56
ART
W
hen hearing the words street art, one name immediately comes to mind: Banksy. There is no doubt that the mysterious British artist is considered to be the front man of this art form. His politically charged and socially criticising works appear in public spaces all over the world. From a painted elephant back in 2006 to pop-up 'anti-fun' theme park Dismaland in the UK during the summer of 2015, there seems to be no limit to Banksy's work field. Just recently, a new piece by his hand appeared nearby the French embassy in London, condemning the actions of the French police in the refugee camp of Calais. Although the artist is clearly active worldwide, Banksy’s work has yet to appear in the streets and galleries of Dubai. The brand new exhibition ‘Banksy: Laugh Now’ consists of some 50 works, most of them on loan from private collectors and produced in the period 2001-2014. Among them is the large masterpiece Beanfield, last exhibited in 2009. It is one of the important works of Banksy, typifying him as an activist. The exhibition of Banksy’s work promises to be an exciting experience. With The Art of Banksy, his former agent and gallerist, Steve Lazarides, has brought together over 85 of the artist’s works. This travelling exposition is the biggest Bansky show yet and will soon show up in Dubai. The artworks are being displayed in settings such as reconstructed London streets and un-derground train stations, thus contributing to that street art vibe we've grown to love. Because Lazarides has worked with Banksy for many years, he is able to provide us with de-tailed information about the artist's life and work. He does so without revealing Banksy's identity, of course. Banksy's art works show us that his ideas about society and politics remain provocative, even outside their original context. They keep providing us food for thought. Let's hope the artist will give Dubai a permanent artwork once these shows leave town, for us to keep contemplating and admiring the work of this legendary enigma.

The concept Sensation is being innovated year after year and guarantees a night of excellence. It is not without reason that Sensation has earned the distinction of being The World’s Leading Dance Event. As everyone attending at the event is required to be dressed in a total-white look, the crowd is immersed in a tidal wave of unity and euphoria. For years this formula has successfully created an atmosphere of togetherness even at the largest venues. After two editions at Meydan, this year it is time for an even bigger show. HOSPITALITY
The Society of
the Golden Keys History
The Society of the Golden Keys - recognisable to hotel guests all over the world by the lapel pins of top Concierges - was formed in Great Britain in 1952. Head Halls Porters from London's leading hotels met to discuss the increasing expectations of the growing numbers of visitors to London, and to look at how they could work together. The founding principles of the Society of The Golden Keys remain to this day and are encapsulated as 'Service Through Friendship' through the society. Concierges work together to improve quality of service to guests. This is done with integrity, professionalism, co-operation and by sharing information. The formation of the Society of Golden Keys' coincided with a larger meeting in Cannes when Societies from nine different countries attended the first international congress of 'Les Clefs D'Or'. Ferdinand Gillet, Head Concierge of L'HĂ´tel Scribe in Paris, masterminded the creation of the organisation, which now covers more than thirty five countries and boasts over five thousand members. Each national chapters self-governing with its own President and Committees. Soon after the formation of the Society of The Golden Keys of Great Britain, the committee was approached by members abreast of their products and services. A second tier of membership was created in response to this, Associate Members.
Today
The Society of the Golden Keys in Great Britain is thriving. With strict conditions of membership requiring proof of professional relationships with guests and work colleagues, approximately three hundred and thirty concierges in Great Britain now proudly wear the symbol of their status: the Golden Keys lapel pin. Each is revered for his or her professional gravitas, integrity, local knowledge and impeccable recommendations. The Society encourages friendship and camaraderie and the members meet formally each month. The Ladies' Night Dinner and Dance and the Anniversary Cocktail Party are the social highlights of the year for many of the leading figures in the hospitality industry, as well there are many other events which the society of the Golden Keys help to promote.
