CURTAIN WALL Public Library / Activity Centre Little Bourke street
Architecture has the power to activate the transformation of a city’s urban fabric, infrastructure and morphology to reflect the changing ideals, standards and aspirations of our ever-evolving society. The Curtain Wall Library represents a dynamic contribution to the ever-emerging possibilities of a site within this city context. Humanist architecture was espoused in the work and teachings of Eileen Gray and inspired the underlying themes of this design with references to dehierarchising space, hyperoperability, flexibility, sociopetal design and composity of space through the use of curved geometric forms created by diaphanous screening. Supplementary themes of fluidity in space and form, cognisant of works by artist Louise Bourgeois contribute to the ever-morphing possibilities of the spatial forms within this community space which are reflected externally and craft a living structure, inclusively reacting and adapting to the aspirations of its diverse and heterogenous populace.
