Goldie Thorn Bio: Goldie Thorn would like to take you on a journey through the backstreets of East London, along canal pathways in the first blush of morning, where people stumble home past bicycle messengers delivering bread to early morning cafes, the bass still resonating in their ears from the night’s clubbing. EP, “Canal Life” captures the pulse of the city, utilizing found sounds and cheeky samples to create a subdued but energetic musical portrait of London. Chameleonic in nature, these tunes are just as effective blasted out of PA speakers at a packed warehouse dance floor, or back at home surrounded by friends at the after party when you just don’t want the night to end. Reverend Thorn (synths & production) and Gold & Chain (vocals & drums) began their journey in Australia, two musicians thrown together by a shared love of Giorgio Moroder, LCD Soundsystem and Hot Chip. They joined forces and moved to the UK to spread their message, the message in this case being a collection of electronically infused tunes designed to get you to stand up and pay attention. Previous single, “Down Town Time” was a blend of sparse 80’s synth with a modern edge. With their forthcoming EP, Canal Life Goldie Thorn have captured the sound of a city that is always in motion, and have found delicate beauty in its darker corners. Now they’re ready to share it with you. “Canal Life” is released on Dreamtime Records and distributed worldwide via Juno Records on September 25, 2015. A bonus fourth track, ‘Chrome Night (Faze Action remix)’ will be available for those who buy the EP digitally.
Hi guys, welcome to Vents! How have you been? Busy prepping for the debut release dropping on the 28th of October. Can you tell us more about the story behind your latest track Chrome Night? It was a simple vocal tune laid in through the Laptop mic two years ago by Jacqueline, which caused a domino effect of music gear-slutting in search of the perfect accompaniment for that little vocal lick. This defined the sound of the EP. The single comes off your new album Canal Life. What´s the story behind the title? Were living near the Lea Valley River and found it strange we had never heard about the London canals before moving here. There was a story that needed to be told! Along with the lifestyle that came along with living on the canals, there is also the life: water birds, sights and sounds on the canal. The record name is also a play on Grace Jones’ Island Life, which we’re big fans of. How was the recording and writing process? The recording process began as little sketches and ideas by Jacqueline in Ableton; which were then remade with hardware gear for a 90’s chill sound. It was mixed through a desk in our home studio; which took ages. We used an Akai s3200 for drums. ESQ-1 and DP4 synths were used too. I am a big fan of Ensoniq gear. It has real character and doesn’t sound too cliché. In what way would you say the city of London, its scene
and people influence the album? I work at a record store so that has made me quite timid about releasing music that isn’t up to scratch. However, it has surrounded me with fellow musicians who have their own constructive opinions; which has been the game changer for me. Where else did you find the inspiration for the song and lyrics? rom everything - films books eo le we meet and traveling. Do you have any plans to hit the road? Possibly. Hopefully we’ll take to the skies to strange places where live gigs boom. What else is happening next in Goldie Thorn´s world? We have a release party at the Star of Hackney Downs on Friday October 23, and Dreamtime 002 (the next release for our label). Hopefully it will be out in time for Christmas!
