From a section of a quilt came my first model of architecture school. I assigned a rule to each piece of the quilt, which determined the height and shape of each piece of my model. The result was a little wacky. Then I drew a reflected isometric, which helped me become more familiar with my design.

A freestanding wall made from a repeted cell. No adhesive. Just paper and sticks. This seemingly impossible task became my favorite project of first year because the rules were so challenging. I placed an extra parameter on myself: the sticks could not touch. After many iterations, I succeeded.

In studying human scale within space, I performed a motion and used it to derive form. I swooped underneath a handrail—a fairly symmetrical movement—and began playing with my body’s shape to inform decisions in sculpting. The X and Y axis demonstrate movement, and the Z axis shows time.

At the end of first year, we were challenged to move out of abstraction and into reality. Thus, this music education place came to life. My partner and I maniupulated the site to hug our building, similar to the way a musician hugs their instrument. We analyzed site, light, and circulation to find form.

The plan, elevation, and structure were inspired by a leaf because the site was lacking trees, The chapel serves to fulfill what the site lacks. With a structure made primarily of wood, it delivers light from above but limits visual distraction, similar to the way landscaping mediates light and sound.

Set in front of KU’s sacred Allen Fieldhouse, this longspan steel enclosure system protects an outdoor basketball court. The form evolved from a basketball to invite regular and gameday traffic to participate in the structure that serves to honor and highlight KU’s most legendary sport.

In downtown Lawrence, this music performance and education hall acts as a telescope to the city. With a glass corridor that frames the view through South Park all the way to the river in North Lawrence, those who enter this space get to experience the clarity of view without interrupting it.

This is a small collection of personal work in various media, including colored pencil, watercolor, marker, graphite, and photography. I have always loved to draw and paint. First semester of first year, we spent a lot of time strengthening the muscles that connect what the eye sees to what the hand produces.
