FROM OUR
READERS THANK YOU FOR ALL YOU HAVE DONE
I just wanted to let you know how much I have enjoyed getting to know you better over the past month or so. I have always respected you and admired you, but it has been a real treat to learn more about you personally and to see you “in action”. Not only are you bright and creative, you are warm and caring as well. Thank you for all you have done for Brass Heart and Brass Key! —Debbie Vandenberg, owner, Brass Heart Clothing & Brass Key Menswear, Greeley
GRATEFUL COINCIDENCES
After placing an ad in Style’s Fort Collins Medical and Wellness Magazine, we had two incidents at our establishment that made our advertising worthwhile. Shortly after our ad appeared in your magazine, one of our cooks had an incident involving a seizure caused by health problems. He fell and hit his head and began seizing violently in the kitchen. Our wait staff called 911, but by that time, two doctors who were having lunch in our establishment, saw this happen and jumped up to help out. One doctor administered to the young man and the other actually helped out by cooking up some of the lunches on the grill. (He later said that he had once cooked in a restaurant). Due to the ad in Style, these gentlemen had come from Denver to look over our facility. We were thankful that they were here and that your magazine was the reason. Our young man is doing well, but has returned home where he will be cared for by his family. Two weeks after the first incident, an elderly customer began to choke on her food and again a doctor who was in our establishment with two other colleagues jumped up and performed the Heimlich manoeuver on her. She was very thankful and so were we as we found out it was once again the ad in Style that had brought them in. Sondy, thank you for a wonderful publication and your outgoing personality as our sales representative. —James Carothers General Manager, River Rock Café, Walden
INFORMATIVE & EYE CATCHING
We not only house students during the academic year, but we host various conferences throughout the summer and people are always interested in Fort Collins and the surrounding area. Your publication is very informative and eye catching. — Jacquie L. Guerrero Colorado State University

publisher’s letter
As we bring 2005 to a close and look forward to a brand new year, I feel it is important to reflect on all my blessings and I truly have many! This year I celebrate Style’s 21st anniversary of publishing magazines. It is with sincere gratitude that I thank you, our readers, advertisers, and all the interesting people we include in our issues for supporting Style and allowing us to bring it to you monthly. It is important to us to keep our magazines fresh, interesting and beautiful, and to that end, we have embarked on redesigning them. I hope you have noticed the new more modern and upscale design. There will be more to come in the new year. An addition in 2006 will also be our first Loveland/Greeley Medical and Wellness Magazine and Directory coming out in January. We are pleased to be working with our regional partners to make this happen for the readers of Style. It is important to me to do my part to keep our local economy thriving. Style is locally owned, committed to our community, provides employment, spends money in our region with locally owned businesses and contributes to the tax base. When you need a product, service or advertising, I encourage you to first consider a locally owned business before using the internet or businesses that don’t have roots in our communities. As you peruse the magazine, I hope you especially enjoy our exciting 2005 Stars of Extreme Transformation Reveal. These four women have truly been on a journey to change inside and out over the past sixteen weeks and, boy, have they done a fantastic job. Enjoy reading about them, their generous providers, and see the results of their hard work. We enjoyed bringing you a peak at our neighbors in Estes Park. Thanks to the many kind and generous people who made our fashion shoot such an enjoyable experience. Estes is such a jewel and worthy of visits all seasons of the year. It is a retreat for the soul and a feast for the eyes; enjoy a weekend there sometime soon! This Winter issue traditionally has a Wedding Section featuring photos and articles of interest to a future bride. Enjoy our photo essay on rings, flowers and photography and learn exactly what the Groom is supposed to take care of these days. And, finally, I was thrilled to feature models photographed at the beautifully redecorated Fort Collins Marriott Hotel who generously contributed to the non-profit I founded to help women diagnosed with breast cancer; Hope Lives Breast Cancer Support Center. Last fall, Style had a special customer appreciation event while supporting Open Stage Theater where we auctioned off the opportunity to be a model in Style and all proceeds went to the non-profit cause. Our models stepped up and donated to this cause and we deeply thank them for their kindness and support! Not only that, but they are some fine looking folks too! This holiday season, I am thankful for each day, for my dear daughters, my family, my staff, my friends, and the opportunity to live in such a generous, and caring community. I wish each of you blessings of the season; joy, love, good health, and the gift of family and good friends. Blessings,

lose your eyes and imagine yourself in a peaceful environment full of beautiful scenery, unique shops, wonderful attractions and exciting activities. A place where you can see the mountains glisten in the snow during winter, where the leaves turn from green to glowing yellow and orange during the fall, and where thousands of colorful flowers bloom in the spring. Now open your eyes and discover all of this and more in the incredible ambiance of Estes Park. Surrounded by the majestic Rocky Mountains, Estes Park is the number one tourist destination in Colorado – not a surprising fact especially for those who have visited Estes and keep going back for more. First enjoyed as an escape from the summer heat by American Indians thousands of years ago, it is now enjoyed by people from around the world as a mountain playground with Rocky Mountain National Park right next door. One of the main highlights of Estes Park is its colorful seasons. No matter what time of year you visit Estes, the scenery is sure to take your breath away and show the essence of Colorado’s beauty.
Spring, the most appreciated season by the local community, will provide you with the chance to snowshoe in a winter wonderland, ice fish in the many remarkable lakes, watch the spring daffodils push their way up through the snow and get cozy in a downtown restaurant. Go on a picnic up Fall River Road leading you to the Rocky Mountains during the summer months, enjoy the scenic views during your hike in the fall and practice your skiing and snowboarding skills on the mountains and warm up to a fire and hot chocolate in the winter. Skiing and snowboarding are extremely popular around the area of Estes because the village of Estes Park and Rocky Mountain National Park are two of the most accessible mountain areas in the state of Colorado. One of the reasons the four seasons are so amazing in Estes Park is because if the overall climate. Estes Park’s beautiful dry climate attracts thousands of visitors each summer from hot, humid climates at lower elevations. The low humidity makes the hot summer days seem cool to those from other areas of the country. Mornings are almost unfailingly sunny, whether it is winter
or summer. The evenings are cool and comfortable with the nightly display of stars in the sky, made even more spectacular by the lack of urban light and air pollution. Nestled in a high mountain valley at just above 7,500 feet elevation, Estes Park, Colorado is home to more than just the year-round natural splendor of the mountains and known for much more than the remarkable four seasons. This delightful mountain village welcomes visitors of all ages providing festivals, cultural experiences, downtown gardens, playgrounds, river walks, bike trails, incredible parks and amazing winter skiing. Whether you are an outdoor enthusiast or a shopa-holic, you’ll find more than enough to keep you entertained. Perhaps the most well known attraction of Estes is the variety of elevations and habitats found at Rocky Mountain National Park. Established in 1915, Rocky Mountain National Park is one of the country’s most frequently visited national parks, attracting more than 3 million visitors each year. The park contains 415 square miles of the most spectacular mountain scenery in America.

Kirk Bien Kirk is owner and operator of Kirk’s Flyshop and Kirk’s Mountain Adventures in Estes Park. Kirk is the modern day Renaissance Outdoorsmen. He juggles two businesses, takes clients on outdoor adventures throughout the state, and still makes time for a picturesque family life. His main obstacle currently is trying to find fishing waders to fit his 5 month old son. “This was an experience I will not soon forget – It was interesting. I liked the crew and appreciate their work.” Laurie Bien Laurie is co-owner of Kirk’s Flyshop and Kirk’s Mountain Adventures in Estes Park. Managing a business with a newborn has not slowed Laurie down one bit. She enjoys fly fishing, running, skiing, and most of all – spending time with her husband and son. “I had a blast modeling these fashions and having the opportunity to meet such interesting people. I enjoyed the Aspen Lodge and the art direction of the shoot was top-notch.” Ryan R. Banker Ryan is the Assistant Manager for the Spruce House at the Christmas Shoppe in Estes Park. Ryan is an avid skier who relishes these winter months. He is also a mountain bike enthusiast and an all around physical fitness buff. “I had a wonderful experience – a great time! I liked feeling like I was America’s Top Model. You know – in the spotlight.” Brooke Claassen Brooke is a certified Massage Therapist and provides her services at The Parlour Salon & Spa at the Stanley Hotel. When I asked her if she had even experienced anything creepy happening at the hotel she grinned and offered a simple (and very phony) “nope”. Brooke enjoys fine dining with friends and traveling to new parts of Colorado for that very experience. “Great time, great location, great weather. The Style Magazine crew made it such an enjoyable time. Thanks guys!” Scott Butler Scott is a retired deep see welder from Marathon, Florida. Scott and his wife moved to Colorado and own a ranch in Allenspark. Scott is a jack of all trades at the Aspen Lodge – Helping with everything from stabling the horses to cooking meals for guests. “Thanks for the try out. My wife thanks you as well.”

continued from page 15 With its granite summits towering over broad, forested valleys, the landscape inspires a visitor with its immense size and beauty. There are several opportunities for countless breathtaking experiences and adventures. Hiking, backpacking, horseback riding, camping, fishing, snowshoeing and wildlife help to expose the extravagance of nature in all its beauty. Today the park stands as a legacy to those pioneers who looked beyond its harvestable resources to its more lasting values. The charming shops and galleries of Estes Park offer an attractive variety from handcrafted art to special giftware and fine apparel, while the exquisite restaurants set the perfect mood for a family vacation or a romantic getaway. You can also choose from a wide variety of accommodations ranging from rustic lodges to quaint bed and breakfasts to luxurious hotels - all of which welcome visitors to a relaxed, comfortable atmosphere. The Stanley Hotel, established in 1909 by inventor F.O. Stanley, is one of the most well known hotels in Colorado. Famous for its old world charm, The Stanley Hotel boasts spectacular views in every direction and is less than six miles away from Rocky Mountain National Park. But its Victorian elegance and lavish atmosphere are not the only reasons tourists flock to this hotel. If you are a fan of ghosts, be sure to request room 217 when booking a stay at the Stanley. It is in this room that Stephen King wrote his novel, “The Shining,” on the basis of ghostly activities on the fourth floor reported by guests over the years. Mr. Stanley himself is said to haunt the hotel from time to time and entertain guests by playing the piano in the music room. With the timeless beauty of Estes Park and so much to see and do, it is no wonder why so many choose this location for special events and occasions such as weddings and anniversaries. The wonderful accommodations and overall atmosphere of Estes is guaranteed to make your special day perfect. In 1860, when Joel Estes settled with his family in the area now known as Estes Park, he could never have imagined what a wondrous place it has turned into. The inspiring natural beauty of the Estes Valley will lift your spirits while the cadence of the mountain environment will both relax and invigorate you. It is a place full of discoveries, magical surroundings, and limitless things to do. It is a remarkable, unparalleled experience and one that will not be soon forgotten. Estes Park has found a special place in many hearts. So whether you discovered Estes Park in the last century or last week, you can be sure of a warm welcome, plenty of things to do and breathtaking scenery. Estes Park welcomes you to a little piece of heaven. Jennifer Johnson is a journalism/fashion student at Colorado State University.

THE DEFINITION OF A WINTER GETAWAY IS AS INDIVIDUAL AS THE PERSON DREAMING IT, WITH PERHAPS ONE UNIVERSAL DENOMINATOR THE NEED TO TAKE A BREAK. SOMETIMES THAT NEED CAN BE INSISTENT AND MADDENING … ONE MORE DAY OF SAMEOLD COULD MEAN GOING OVER THE EDGE, OR SO IT FEELS. OTHER TIMES IT IS A GENTLE TUGGING, A LONGING TO BE SOMEWHERE ELSE, DOING SOMETHING ELSE.

or some of us, a trip to the Botanic Gardens where leafy greens fill every field of vision and Spring seems closer may be break enough from the dull monotony of leaving for work and coming home in that same gray light of short days. Yet countless others take heed by geographically escaping winter’s grasp, going to some warmer clime where a bathing suit and sunscreen are all that’s necessary. When fresh snow sparkles the slopes of Summit County, scores are seduced to play hooky for mid-week skiing on fresh, powdery runs. The eye-squinting brightness is more invigorating than a week’s vacation in summer, an unbeatable solution for sagging spirits. But thanks to both high tech gear and our surprisingly moderate temperatures, Colorado offers a vast selection of outdoor pursuits to anyone willing to juggle schedules and workload. Whether by cross country trails or snow-shoeing treks, hiking or biking, there are spectacular vistas and quiet havens for those motivated to find them. We have world-envied getaways within easy reach. We don’t need to drive days on end or fly anywhere, except at the face of indifference to the wonder around us Re-prioritizing, with work life balance high on the list gives us extravagant permission to spend days by the fireplace, reading our way

through to a fresh perspective. A good book is as restorative and exhilarating to the mind as fresh air itself, especially when devoured in a place where we feel relaxed and unencumbered. Living in Colorado is something most of us do not easily take for granted. Many who live here made a conscious decision to move to the Front Range area because of the quality of life we have here, the smorgasbord of cultural and educational opportunities within close proximity to favored outdoor activities, and the sheer beauty of this place! We are lucky enough to live in one of the country’s premier winter getaways. I’ve been fortunate to travel, which suits the gypsy in me well, and several times I’ve moved away since my initial transplantation here from the East Coast. Each time life necessitates leaving, I find myself anxiously awaiting DIA’s familiar white tent or I-25’s long stretches to announce I’m home. Home to wind up the Big Thompson’s snow-dusted curves, or cross the river to a secluded luncheon spot. Home to tromp across Pawnee Grassland’s spacious expanse. Home to get away in my own backyard. Perhaps embracing winter is all the break we need. Maryjo Faith Morgan is a freelance writer in Loveland.

EYE CENTER OF NORTHERN COLORADO Lori Scott, a Board Certified Optician, at the Eye Center of Northern Colorado, strives to serve her clientele in search for the perfect frame both a fashion accessory and a medical device. Lori explains, “Our objective is to provide the client with frames that not only look good and feel good, but coordinate with one’s lifestyle and is appropriate for the prescription.” Jane told Lori that she had a general idea of what she wanted when she began the frame selection process. “Lori was genuinely interested in tailoring my eyeglass wearing needs to both type of lenses and frame design. I needed guidance, and Lori was there with wonderful customer care and professional expertise.” After the fun of trying on many fine frames which were flexible enough for day to

evening wear, showing off her eyes (especially after the upper lid surgery), Jane decided on Varilux progressive lens set in an Oliver Peoples frame. And Jane can see better! It is a month since Jane’s Bilateral Upper Lid Blepharoplasty, the removal of skin from the upper eyelids. With the swelling reduced and the natural skin tone returning, Jane is delighting in the finished work, provided by her surgeon, Dr. Chet Reistad, of the Eye Center of Northern Colorado. Jane had some hesitations prior to this surgery but she exclaims, “He is such an expert, that I was able to put my faith in him and he didn’t let me down.” The lid and brow droopiness which Reistad terms as “a descending brow caused by natural aging and gravity,” was exacerbated by stress, adds Jane. “Dr. Reistad gave me back 15 years of my life. I feel more awake, look younger and actually get less tired. It also
looks so natural,” says Jane. Dr. Reistad explains that Jane was a great candidate for this procedure and healed quickly without complications. A Restylane® injection also made Jane’s lips fuller. “He’s just fantastic,” exudes a grateful Jane. “He made this intimidating process easy, comfortable, and even relaxing,”
HIGH PLAINS DENTAL ARTS, INC. Michael Taylor’s 30 years of dental artistry has shown him how creating the teeth for a beautiful new smile not only changes a person’s whole appearance, boosts self-esteem, but also shatters a self-consciousness that afflicts an individual with poor dental health. Taylor, CDT, CEO of High Plains Dental Arts, says, “I love what I do because it is an investment in changing people’s lives. It is so rewarding to see the difference a smile makes before and after. The individual is beaming.” Taylor worked with Dr. Overton in creating the perfect smile for our Star, Jane Davis. Taylor’s lab work produces what is termed, “fixed restorations”, no dentures. He makes Empress single units, inlays/onlays, veneers and crowns. The Empress product is a lucite-reinforced , pressed ceramic that has been successfully used for 15 years. Taylor explains, “The durability of this product is as impressive as its natural looking appearance, which is achieved by “opalescence,” the ability to change in color depending on a variety of light situations like a natural tooth. Taylor’s artistry is reflected in his ability to build teeth that are white and straight, but have a variance of shades and contour which make them look more like natural teeth. He checks the shades under three lighting situations-standard fluorescent, color corrected fluorescent and natural sunlight. The final choice looks best in all the lighting situations. “In Jane’s Lori Scott along with Chet Reistad, MD, and surgical team, case,” Taylor explains, “Dr. Overton Eye Center of Northern Colorado. selected the color because the 10 Lori Scott, Optician, Eye Center of Northern Colorado, Empress veneers which I am creating helps Jane select frames. for Jane do not rely upon the other

teeth for a match.” Jane is overcome with joy that she will be free from concealing the chipped and broken teeth that made her hesitant to smile. Her teeth, once a source of unhappiness, have become a resource for confidence and self-esteem. Taylor has helped changed another life. LE SALON Jane has been getting the royal treatment at Le Salon courtesy of Shauna Smith, Jane’s hair designer for Stars of Extreme Transformation. After a preliminary consultation Smith has formulated her plan for Jane’s cut and color. “Jane has great hair so it’s not going to take much to make it look terrific, but she does need some color enhancement and the cut needs some serious reshaping. I’m going to start by doing an

overall creamy blonde and then go back and add highlights,” says Smith who’s been with Le Salon for a year and before that was a designer at Headlines Salon of the Rockies for eight years. “For the cut I’m keeping the length but am going to update it. It’s going to be very natural-looking but have a subtle, sexy edge—think Ralph Lauren,” she adds. This process has allowed Shauna and Jane to get to know each other and share their experiences. “That’s what I love about being a stylist,” says Smith. “You get to create an aesthetic for people which is fantastic but it’s the communication and sharing that really make this work meaningful. I felt an immediate connection with Jane—almost a kindred spirit kind of feeling. She’s had an
amazing life and I’m enjoying getting to know her and talk with her. I’ve also started noticing some changes in her attitude. She’s holding her head a little higher and although I’m a strong proponent of working on your inner-self, I know, because I see it daily, that when someone feels good about how they look it can really give them a huge mental boost,” Smith adds. “Shauna and the staff here have been wonderful to me,” Jane says. “Because of them I look better which makes me feel better about myself. This whole process is teaching me to slow down, to focus on myself and allow myself to enjoy things more. Stars is about so much more than just looking better. It’s really about spiritual transformation.” THE OTHER CLUB Jane responds, “Life-changing!” when asked about her exercise program at The Other Club. Mary Homan, CPT, CMT, says that when she began working with Jane, balance and alignment were initial goals. Homan recounts that one day, Jane exclaimed, “I’ve found my spine!” Homan not only observed an anatomical alignment, but saw a change in Jane’s attitude allowing her to stand straighter in the world. Homan reports that Jane came to the club motivated and allowed the changes in body health to take place. Jane says, “The partnership with Mary, not only taught me to be more intuitive about my body, but I received great lessons with which to alter my perspectives and life pace.” Bud Phillips, owner of The Other Club, says, “It is a privilege to be part of this process as I’ve watched Jane transform herself inwardly, as well as outwardly.” Phillips attributes The Other Club’s success to the small intimate atmosphere with personally involved, dedicated trainers, who help realize their client’s goals both inside and outside the gym.
Jane. An impression of the final adjustment of the temporary is made. Michael Taylor, of High Plains Dental Art, then works from this mold to build the veneers. Not only is Jane thrilled to receive this beautiful smile that not only looks perfect, but feels right, she also mentions, that she can once again floss and eat what she wants! The fragility of the plastic temporaries limited her food selection. Jane is extremely grateful to Dr. Overton, Tracey, and his wonderful, caring staff at the Overton Center for Dental Arts for changing her life with a smile.
Chet Reistad, MD of Eye Center of Northern Colorado with Anne after injections. EYE CENTER OF NORTHERN COLORADO With a deep furrow near her left eye and a deep crease by her mouth, Anne was looking forward to her consultation with Dr. Chet Reistad, specialist in the practice of ophthalmic plastic surgery at the Eye Center of Northern Colorado. At the initial consultation, Anne discussed the possibility of having her drooping left eye corrected with surgery, along with the possibility of Botox for the age-related furrows on her face. Anne reported that after a thorough eye examination, Dr. Reistad observed signs of a possible thyroid condition. Anne said, “Dr. Reistad explained to me how the eye surgery would be incompatible with the suspected thryroid condition. He ordered some tests for me and felt it necessary to observe the condition for a period longer than the 16-week transformation program.” Anne appreciated Dr. Reistad’s commitment to proceed with caution. However, Anne was a great candidate to receive a Botox injection in the furrow on her forehead between her eyes and Restylane to erase the crease on the left side of her mouth. Anne praised the generosity of Dr. Reistad , who provide her with 2 separate treatments. “I am very happy with my more relaxed, youthful look,” says a thankful Anne.

OVERTON CENTER FOR DENTAL ARTS After nearly four months of wearing her temporary upper teeth, Jane is in Dr. Thomas Overton’s office to receive the final restoration for her beautiful new smile, her finished veneers. Dr. Overton explains that in the duration of time the plastic temporaries have been on her natural teeth, any adjustment was allowed to stabilize. Jane’s adjustments included a change in her bite, allowance for the addition of teeth to replace the missing ones, and a determination of the shape (square or oval) along with the sizing the appropriate length of the teeth. Color is also taken into consideration. Minor adjustments are made until every aspect of the restoration is completely satisfactory to both Dr. Overton and
Anne, after Botox® and Restylane® injections erased deep facial lines. HARMONY DENTAL CARE Widely known for his expertise in both general and cosmetic dentistry. Ralph Downey, D.D.S., is committed to both the comfort and health of his clients, as well as the beautiful smiles he can create for them. Dr. Downey, explains, “Our goal

is to assess all the alternatives, possibly including oral surgery, orthodontics, and other specialists, in order to achieve the best cosmetic results, with equal commitment to a patient’s overall health and long-term results.” Dr. Downey’s comprehensive evaluation of Anne presented her with a two-fold plan. The initial procedure would be a cleaning followed by a teeth whitening, and the second option would be to perform orthodontic and oral surgical treatments that would include implants, resulting in 18 to 24 months of treatment, exceeding Style’s 16week transformation plan. Sue McIntosh, R.D.H., Dental Hygienist, began Anne’s treatment with a cleaning, for which Anne was delighted, admitting that “one was long overdue!” For the in-office Zoom! Whitening treatment, Terri Wright administered the procedure, which began with Anne selecting a movie to watch while she was subject to four, ten-minutes cycles of treatments. Harmony Dental Care offers both Brite Smile and Zoom! Whitening treatments, but selects the one appropriate for the condition of the client’s teeth. Anne’s teeth were more sensitive, with a brown and yellow cast which would respond effectively to the Zoom! gel’s active ingredient, hydrogen peroxide, along with the light aid to activate the gel. Clinically proven, Zoom! can whiten teeth up to eight shades in one hour. Anne is thrilled with these initial steps towards her dental health provided by such a caring staff and is delighted to see her smile shades whiter!

Larry Baker, HeadTurners, cuts and styles Anne’s hair for the Reveal PLASTIC SURGICAL ASSOCIATES OF FORT COLLINS, PC Anne was never quite certain how to solve her thinning brow problem with makeup. Permanent Makeup, provided by Plastic Surgical Associates of Fort Collins, became the solution. Paula Hodge, Licensed Esthetician, began the process by using a pencil to delineate the brow, exacting the natural brow line. Hodge analyzes Anne’s brows as sparse, uneven, and thinning on the outside of each brow and will easily be corrected with micro-pigmentation, not tattooing. Hodge explains that the process, as well as the pigment used for Permanent Makeup, is entirely different from regular tattooing. The first of the three treatments is delivered by the Colortek micro-pigmentation system, which uses little acupuncture needles to deliver pigment to the skin
Eyeliner and Lip Color, also applied with a great deal of precision and artistry. Anne looked forward to her LipoDissolve procedure, because it is a non-surgical procedure with no down time. Jennifer Oltersdorf, RN at Plastic Surgical Associates of Fort Collins, reports that Anne is a perfect candidate for LipoDissolve, because Anne’s thighs were showing the effects of cellulite, rather than fat. Oltersdorf explains that LipoDissolve effectively reduces the dimpled areas of the skin that diet and exercise will not resolve, by injecting a natural compound derived from soybeans into the undesired fat pockets. The body itself uses this compound to metabolize the fat cell until it is destroyed. Anne received the series of three injections six to eight weeks apart. Anne reports that other than a slight bruising or swelling from the injections, she is beginning to see optimal results since her last procedure. Anne says, “I love seeing the transformation of the backs of my thighs and am thankful that I received such high quality care in a wonderfully caring environment.” TOTAL IMAGE “A friendly, welcoming atmosphere, like a hometown salon,” is how Mary Buchholz describes Total Image, where she has been a nail technician for over 15 years. “Our clients not only return for the great selection of services which include hair, manicures, pedicures, and waxes, but also for the unpretentious attitude and great customer service.” Buchholz primarily applies acrylic nails at the salon, which Anne selected for her Total Image pampering. Anne thoroughly enjoyed watching the pink and white French acrylic nails transform her hands into a professional, polished, well-groomed look. Anne joyfully exclaims, “I feel more well-groomed; the nails fit my lifestyle, and they don’t get scratched!” Anne will continue her nail maintenance with Buchholt’s expertise every two weeks.
Ralph Downey D.D.S., Harmony Dental Care, consults with Anne about her treatments.
Anne receives a full set of acrylic nails from Mary Buchholz, Nail Technician, Total Image.
HEADTURNERS SALON “A fun, friendly environment where one can get the very best hairstyle,” is how Larry Baker, owner of HeadTurners, describes his salon. Anne allowed Baker, a master of precision hair cutting, to transform her hairstyle. A preliminary consultation began the process. Anne was impressed that Baker interviewed her about her lifestyle and the level of maintenance she desired for her hair, before he determined the style. Baker says that because Anne’s hair was cut so close to her head behind her ears, the initial trim was minimal, in order to allow the hair to grow and provide more fullness, which would be a better balance for her face. Shortly before the Reveal, after her hair had time to grow out, Anne returned to the salon for the final reshaping. Baker brought fullness out around the ears with upturned ends in the back, which lifted her features and her spirit. Sierra Solano, expert colorist, highlighted Anne’s hair, which brightened her face. Anne says, “I love my new hairstyle; it’s not a drastic change, but has become so easy to take care of and the highlights make a huge difference! They
ADVANCED AESTHETICS RaDean has enjoyed a bounty of benefits from the Body Beautiful Treatment administered by Marlene Beckett, Licensed Esthetician and coowner of Advanced Aesthetics. RaDean admits she was skeptical when Marlene explained that the Body Beautiful laser treatment reduces cellulite, re-contours and reduces inches. But RaDean happily reports that the treatments have smoothed and toned her thighs, having made a difference in the way her clothes fit. “I lost 2 inches in each thigh, went down a pant size and my daughter-in-law mentioned that my jeans weren’t as tight,” says RaDean. “Marlene and her staff at Advanced Aesthetics were so informative as well as being a great support to me through the process.”

Hodge says, “The initial treatment delivers pigment to virgin skin, so there is a 50% loss of pigment. The skin retains more pigment after the second treatment because there is a pigment base established, and the third treatment allows fine-tuning because the skin now holds a significant foundation of pigment.” Hodge adds that she begins the process on the conservative side, because it is far easier to add than subtract. Anne says, “I am so happy that I have eyebrows again which look so natural. I don’t have to do anything!” the Permanent Makeup will last nearly 5 years, at which some fading may begin to occur. At their initial consultation, RaDean requested that her hair remain somewhat long, so Young discussed cutting it shoulder length with some layering for fullness around her face. To restore a shiny, healthy appearance to her hair and correct the color, Michelle will apply a warm, light brown color with caramel highlights to add brightness. RaDean admits that she has been coloring her own hair, so she is anticipating the professional pampering at Capelli’s. To her delight, RaDean received another service offered at Capelli’s, which was provided by Kristine Hart, who shaped and dyed her eyebrows. Right before the reveal, Samantha McIntyre styled her hair, finessing it with a trim before the big night. Although her hair is still long, RaDean loves the ease of styling shorter hair that is so much easier to care for, giving her a more youthful appearance. HARMONY LASER CENTER Carol Hiller, owner and director of Harmony Laser Center, is thrilled to be able to employ the latest in laser technology to free both men and women from unwanted body and facial hair. With state-of-the-art technology, laser hair removal has become a more customer friendly process due to the lower cost, less pain and what used to take Hiller to do in an hour with electrolysis, can now be done in about a minute. RaDean chose a bikini line laser hair removal treatment. This was RaDean’s first experience with this type of procedure, so the positive, caring manner in which Hiller approached the treatments, instilled in her the confidence she needed. A series of 5 treatments are needed to complete the bikini line hair removal. RaDean explains the laser experience as little stinging like sensations, which goes quickly. She says, “It’s definitely worth it; I love seeing the results.”

Sarah Istvanek and Karen Wolfe, Nail Technicians, Natural Nail Care Clinic, give pedicures to Candice and RaDean. NATURAL NAIL CARE CLINIC From high tech to nail tech, Lisa Peterson changed careers to open Natural Nail Care Clinic in 2002, with a commitment to improve the quality of skin and nail care utilizing a natural regime. Peterson explains the basics for this unique approach as educating the client, using the best products and providing a fun, social environment in which to luxuriate during the restoration process. Peterson maintains that, “Once I dispel the myth that a manicure is beyond an emery board and a bottle of polish, the client can be successful in reaching her goal of healthy skin and nails.” To accomplish this, the initial complimentary manicure is highly instructional, educating the client in hydration, maintenance , protectors and then the optional “glamour” step, a pretty shade of nail lacquer. The Mavala product line from Switzerland, was selected because it utilizes the least harsh chemicals, offering the best results. Peterson explains, “Anyone’s nails can be beautiful by using the right products, while being dedicated to the program. A starter kit can be purchased to continue the salon treatment at home for daily renewal. Even the weakest, damaged, fragile nails can improve.” She warns that it is not a quick fix, it takes 3 to 6 months to fully grow out a nail. “Once the new clients have used the products and find that they really work, they leave feeling both pretty and empowered.” Peterson claims that her regular clientele also return for the unique nine-stool manicure bar, which promotes a relaxing, social environment. Jane, along with RaDean, and Candice delighted in the improvement in their skin and nails. NORTHERN COLORADO SURGICAL ASSOCIATES She is feeling a bit nervous. “Does it hurt?” queries RaDean, as she awaits a sclerotherapy procedure in the office of Northern Colorado Surgical Associates. Sclerotherapy is an injection treatment to reduce and eliminate unsightly blue spider veins, which can appear on the backs of knees, legs and ankles. RaDean had heard that the saline solution was very painful when injected into the veins. However, some of her fears were initially allayed by the friendly, informative staff, who greeted her and prepared her for surgery. But Dr. Robert Quaid, her surgeon, immediately put her concerns to rest by explaining that he does not use saline, but has opted for a better product, a German import, Sclerovein, an ethoxysclerol solution, used successfully in Europe “This chemical, classified as a detergent, is completely painless and offers a lower risk of post surgical ulcerations with better long-term results,” explains Dr. Quaid. RaDean is now confident and ready to succumb to the procedure which will eliminate the annoying spider veins which had clustered around her knee and lower thigh area. The procedure begins with RaDean lying on a surgical table with her legs exposed to a bright light. Dr. Quaid continues to reassure her as he begins the Sclerovein injections. To RaDean’s
28

delight she exclaims, “I only feel a slight prick of a needle!” As RaDean chats with Dr. Quaid throughout the half-hour procedure, he describes the post-injected vein will be tiny mosquito bitelike welts. He further explains that once these “telangectias” or spider veins are eliminated, they do not return. With the procedure complete, RaDean is thrilled with the smooth, painless experience. As a final step, Dr. Quaid instructs RaDean to wear a special pair of elastic stockings for 48 hours. “The compression facilitates better post-injection results, by allowing the vein walls to heal together.” Within a month, the redness will fade and the desired results will be achieved.
INTUITIVE TOUCH MASSAGE Dianne Batchelder, of Intuitive Touch Massage, was delighted to be part of RaDean’s transformation process. Batchelder’s primary goal is to listen to her client, then tailor each massage to the client’s concerns and needs. She takes joy in seeing how the effects of massage therapy directly affect her client’s life. RaDean as an artist, had been working on ladders and scaffolding, working on a large mural. Her muscles were sore when she came to Batchelder for the first time. Batchelder says that she integrated some deep tissue massage with a form of Reiki for energy work to soothe RaDean’s stressed muscles. “It worked!” says RaDean. She found that when Batchelder would give her a relaxation massage she would experience a sense of calm and well being, allowing her to focus on the positive and how fortunate she was. “I looked forward to my massage days and realized that even as a busy mother and businesswoman, I need time for myself.” Batchelder said that she felt like she had helped RaDean reach a lifestyle goal when she became aware of the necessity for her own nurturing time.

THE EYES HAVE IT “You can have a lot of fun with eyewear,” says Dennis Bell, owner of The Eyes Have It. Bell began merchandizing sunglasses at the mall in 1980 and then expanded to prescription lenses. The Eyes Have It is now full service with Dr. Donald Burritt seeing patients as the store’s optometrist. RaDean had a complete eye exam and was very excited to dispense with her worn, bold, scratched frames and find something more subtle, almost invisible on her face. RaDean admits, “I came in and began trying on a myriad of frames, then Garrett Morton, an apprentice optician, immediately guided me to my final choice. They are perfect for day or evening wear.” A pair of
Dennis Bell, The Eyes Have It, consults with RaDean on her frame selection. Adidas stainless steel, semi-rimless frames with matching clip-on sunglasses is on order. Bell says, “I love every aspect of my business, from fitting the prescription for the frames to getting a person what he wants. I consider an individual’s features, personality and lifestyle, then the frames will make that customer look fabulous!”
Dianne Batchelder, Massage Therapist, Intuitive Touch Massage, gives RaDean a relaxing massage. AWP ESTHETICS & SPA “Candice has beautiful skin,” reports Megan Duran, Licensed Medical Esthetician, at AWP Esthetics & Spa. Shortly before her reveal, Candice returned there to receive a Genesis procedure. “This is non-ablative,” explains Duran, “meaning it doesn’t remove epidermal cells, but uses thermal heat to increase collagen and elastin.” Duran determined Candice to be a perfect candidate for this treatment because it will polish her inherently good skin by decreasing pore size, smoothing the complexion to a porcelain-like finish. The Genesis procedure is also highly effective for minimizing fine lines and wrinkles. Duran recommends an 8week maintenance program to retain that polished appearance. Even with her naturally good skin, Candice loved the feel and appearance of her skin’s texture after the procedure. Another highlight of Genesis is the absence of complications, such as burning, blistering, flaking or peeling associated with other ablative procedures. AWP Esthetics & Spa is comprehensive in helping any woman with any esthetic procedure, such as chemical peels, resurfacing, laser hair removal or vein treatments. CONNECTIONS-HEART CENTERED COACHING Carmen Mendoza calls her approach, “whole life-coaching.” She explains that if an individual is unhappy with a single component of his life, that affects every other aspect of that person’s life and wellbeing. So, how does one make a change? Carmen starts with identifying that person’s goal and then asks open-ended questions. This allows the client to formulate his own answer. “I’m not afraid to push the client for a deeper answer; I help him get honest.” Candice had a coaching

Candice explained that she understood the coaching process as a way to make these positive changes in her life permanent. “Carmen is a great person, she has a beautiful smile and a great personality. The thing I love and hate the most about Carmen is that she never accepts my first answer; she pushes for a more in-depth answer. This helps me reach my goal, by staying on the right path,” says Candice. Carmen says that Candice was a delight to coach because she was willing to get honest and deepen her learning. She was also open to view her life from different perspectives. “My job was to help her stay focused, be accountable and champion her victories.” I would ask Candice how she was going to celebrate her weekly successes, then I asked her how she was going to maintain that success? Candice explains that she isn’t fretting about the little things, which helps her deal with the bigger picture. She is experiencing the changes as a permanent part of her life. METABOLIC RESEARCH CENTER When Judy Rowe, consultant with the Metabolic Research Center, speaks of Candice’s accomplishments throughout the 16-week transformation, she has nothing but praise for Candice’s victories. Rowe exclaims, “Candice’s 43 lbs. weight loss with a 7 1/2 % reduction in body fat is excellent success in the life management component.” Rowe continues, “Because our program is a comprehensive approach to weight
Gigi Palmer, General Manager, Metabolic Research Center, measures Candice after her weight loss. loss, Candice not only achieved success in a physical work out, but came to understand the mental and emotional aspects of food, becoming educated in lower fat, lower calorie foods. She even learned how to identify all those ‘hidden sugars’.” Rowe reports that Candice has made drastic changes when shopping for groceries or eating at a restaurant. Candice says, “I choose the protein and green veggies, eliminate the bread, and find that I don’t even want dessert! I eat significantly less, but feel more satisfied than ever, with increased energy and stamina.” Candice is extremely grateful to both Gigi Palmer and Judy Rowe for “holding her hand and celebrating her victories!”

as providers, family and friends gathered at the home of Lydia Dody, to rejoice in the successes of these Extreme Transformation Stars on their phenomenal journeys. As those who graciously and generously supported these wonderful women gathered at the foot of the stairs, Anne, Jane, Candice and RaDean were introduced to enthusiastic cheers, toasts, and loving smiles. A buzz of comments, “amazing,” “fabulous,” “wow”, met each woman as she descended the staircase. They glowed radiantly and walked with confidence, looking beautiful and self-assured. It has truly been an honor for all of us to work with these special women and be a part of their lives. We are thankful they allowed us to share their stories of transformation in Style. An especially heartfelt thank-you is extended to each of our professional providers who gave so generously of their time, talent and products. “We know that as many personal relationships have been established, each woman has been inspired and educated, as well as the thousands of women who read Style, having followed each woman’s journey. For these gifts, I deeply thank everyone,” says Lydia Dody, publisher and owner of Style Media and Design, Inc.

TANGLES SALON & SPA “Expect the unexpected” is our motto, says Kelly Martin, of Tangles. “A client may enter the salon for hair services , but finds herself being pampered with a complimentary foot or hand massage, or perhaps a paraffin dip, a warm rice pack around the neck, or a foot soak.” Candice was treated to these elegant services while Martin provided a new hairstyle for her reveal. Martin said, “Candice gave me free reign, saying she was stuck in a rut with her hair and wanted something different, fun, even a

Martin enlivened Candice’s blonde hair with some reds and browns, giving a vibrancy to her finished hairstyle. Candice says, “Tangles turned me into an untangled person! I have now have a great hairstyle that is easier to manage, so I don’t have to spend a lot of time to maintain it.” Massage therapy, also available at Tangles Salon & Spa, was also part of Candice’s transformation. Michele Liptak, CMT, explained that a combination of deep tissue massage and aromatherapy helped Candice with overall stress reduction and flushed out toxins. Candice reported, “One day I had a cold and Michele gave a detoxifying massage. The next day my symptoms were less severe and I lost four pounds.” KISS THE MOON With a romantic idea of a full moon and delectable lips, Diann Ledall, Chris Monfort, and Kellie Holcomb creatively brainstormed until the name, “Kiss The Moon” was born. What sets their make-up and skincare store apart from other retailers, says Ledall, is their high standard of customer service, professional consultation and the cost of a full makeover which becomes redeemable in products. Each of Style’s 2005 Stars received that final polish of perfectly applied makeup for the night of the reveal. Ledall explains that for each star, her objective was to analyze skin type and features, the level of comfort in wearing makeup, what colors would be worn, and what kind of look is desired. For every customer who asks, “What would look good on me?” Ledall explains she provides this thorough analysis with the objective of complementing an individual’s features for a striking presentation. Ledall wants to hear her customer say, “I love how I look!” Ledall had a great experience with the 2005 Stars and her attentiveness to their individual’s needs proved successful, because each of the ladies looked beautiful. Ledall says, “The 2005 Transformation Stars loved how they looked!” BRASS HEART CLOTHING, GREELEY Debbie Vandenberg opened Brass Heart Clothing in Greeley 4 1/2 years ago and since then has remodeled her women’s store and added her men’s store, Brass Key Menswear. Since Brass Heart Clothing store always has young looking fashion forward styles, it was the perfect match for our

youngest Star, Candice Walker. “I was surprised to be trying on the color brown and some of the new styles I could never have worn before. Now that I am a smaller size I can wear lots of new looks,” said Candice. “Candice was lots of fun to work with and it was especially fun to introduce her to new looks for her new shape,” said Vandenberg. “We selected a wonderful pair of brown satin pants, paired them with a trendy animal print lace trimmed camisole and added a lacey twist-front gold metallic knit bolero. A beautiful brown crystal necklace and drop earrings finished the ensemble with just the right touch of glamour. The color was especially flattering because of Candice’s skin tone, her beautiful eye color, and new highlighted hair.” Vandenberg pointed out, Candice looked awesome. DESIGNS When RaDean walked into Designs to shop for her outfit for the Reveal, she felt right at home. RaDean had been hired by Michele Crutcher and Linda Vernon, owners of Designs, to paint the murals which adorn the store’s interior. “I love this store,” exclaims RaDean. “Both Michele and Linda have a great eye for style and provide such personal customer service.” She admits that it seems like forever since she assembled a new outfit, so she is a little hesitant at the beginning. Liv Peterson, a sales consultant, observed that after looking at all the clothes, RaDean began experimenting with new colors, fabrics and styles. She began to integrate her artistic talents into selecting clothes for herself. RaDean realized that she liked getting a professional perspective on what looks good on her. “It really helped me put together the right outfit,” says RaDean, who chose brown knit slacks, a beautiful multi-print shirt, in rich, earthy browns and reds with an accent of turquoise. A gorgeous muted red suede jacket completed the outfit. MARTHA ELLEN LIMITED Just having celebrated their 4th anniversary in a quaint old house on Main Street, Martha Ellen Limited continues to provide a loyal clientele contemporary clothing ranging from casual to elegant, in a homey, relaxed environment. “We really enjoy being ‘wardrobe builders’ for our clients, providing them with unique apparel from jeans to cocktail, with anything unusual in between,” says Marti DiTaranto, owner of Martha Ellen Limited. DiTaranto says that Jane was a lot of fun to work with. Her flair for the unusual, as well as a keen eye for what looks good on her, made it easy to select something that flattered her new figure. Jane says that she knows what she likes. When she tried on a 1940’s Retro-style black cocktail dress with a sweetheart halter top, embellished with bugle beading on a fitted bodice, she knew it was the perfect outfit for the Reveal. A flirty, beaded silk shawl elegantly completed the ensemble for her big night. SEASONS CLOTHING COMPANY When Darlene Fowles, moved to Fort Collins from Breckenridge, she found the dressy, casual look she had merchandised there, was difficult to find in this town. Her boutique, Seasons Clothing Company, became the answer. Aiming to please a clientele from ages 25 to 65, Fowles offers a gorgeous display of 20 different designers, showing a fun, sophisticated approach to dressy, casual attire, providing excellent customer service. She says that she will call a customer if a piece of merchandise might be perfect for that woman’s wardrobe. When Anne met with Fowles, Anne explained that she had not purchased any clothes for a couple of years, but proudly admitted that losing one dress size, from a size 14 to a size 12, is making it a lot more fun to shop. Fowles says, “Anne was excited to try some different things and was very appreciative of our help.” After the fun of trying on clothes that fit beautifully. DeeDee Kraxberger, also helped Anne select several outfits, one of which was a flirty mid-length, black organza skirt with silver sequins, chosen for the Reveal.

arrive at the accounting firm of Rickards Long & Rulon early one chilly winter morning. I am tired, haven’t had my coffee, and was not really looking forward to conducting an interview with three accountants – not that there is anything wrong with being an accountant, I just thought it would be one boring interview. I was trying to think of what questions to ask an accountant. Do you like numbers? Do you like money? Are you a robot? Do you consider the term “bean counter” derogatory? Speaking of beans, do you have any coffee? These were the only questions rattling around in my brain this early in the morning. To my surprise and delight, less than five minutes into my interview with Jill Rickards, Lauren Long, and Scott Rulon I realized that these accountants were not your normal bean counters. Rickards, Long and Rulon was established in July of 2000. Prior to the firm as we know it today, Jill Rickards and Lauren Long had their own practices for many years. Scott Rulon joined Rickards’ practice in 1998 after working for a CPA firm in Cheyenne. Being two of a small number of women in Northern Colorado with their own CPA practices, Rickards and Long confided in each other and later decided to bring their expertise and knowledge together by becoming partners. Rickards, Long and Rulon strives to provide the best services possible for their clients. Every client is unique and the partners utilize a menu of services to make sure all client concerns have been identified and addressed. Some clients rely on the firm to take care of all of their financial needs, while others need only advice and guidance in select areas. For example, the firm provides business consulting, accounting services which include audits, reviews, compilations; as well as quickBooks® consulting and payroll services, and all aspects of tax reporting and planning. RLR notes that there are two broad categories of their firm services - first, compliance with tax laws and

TRUST, UNDERSTANDING AND COMMITMENT THREE VERY POWERFUL AND MEANINGFUL WORDS, ESPECIALLY FOR AN ACCOUNTING FIRM AND ITS CLIENTELE. WITH A COMBINED EXPERIENCE OF MORE THAN SIXTY YEARS, JILL RICKARDS, LAUREN LONG AND SCOTT RULON ARE DEDICATED TO SERVING SMALL TO MIDSIZED ENTERPRISES AND INDIVIDUAL CLIENTS. THEY HAVE DONE SO BY BUILDING STRONG RELATIONSHIPS WITH THEIR CLIENTS IN THE NORTHERN COLORADO COMMUNITY.
regulations second, assisting clients, with planning and implementation. Planning is where all issues are addressed. A creative approach is taken to implement the changes in business procedure to eliminate negative issues, which solves financial obstacles and accomplishes client’s goals. When it comes to business performance, RLR has the answers for streamlining a client’s operation; which translates to a more prosperous bottom line. For Rickards, Long and Rulon it is all about establishing personal relationships with clients. They see the client and CPA relationship as incredibly important because a CPA sees their clients in a different light than the client’s family and friends. Standing by the side of their clients through high times and low times, the partners see their clients in their most vulnerable state and their most confident state. Long says that this is due to the fact that money issues are incredibly stressful and provoke a variety of emotions. “Money is a touchy matter,” she says. “Clients need to feel comfortable and know that we have their best interest at heart.” Before an understanding can be reached, it is imperative that a close relationship be established. “Both sides need to be open-minded, listen and compromise.” Long also feels that an understanding of every client’s risk tolerance and psychological make-up creates better insight and knowledge. “The risk tolerance needs to be looked at because of all the circumstances and parties involved in the situation. We are not just working with the one client; we are working with everyone who is involved with them.” That is when it all hit me. The relationship that one has with their accountant is one of the most intimate relationships you will ever have with another human being. The relationship with your husband or wife is very intimate. The relationship you have with your physician is very intimate as well. But the relationship you have with your accountant is a whole other animal. They see you at your most vulnerable - they see your bottom line. They see your assets.
But seriously, your accountant is not just some “bean counter”. They play the role of fiscal growth manager, clinical psychologist, marriage counselor, and personal life coach all wrapped into one. Being able to gage the risk tolerance of a client based upon their emotional and fiscal needs is not a job for the faint of heart; nor is a job for a robotic number cruncher. “The hardest part of being a CPA is when a client’s business is not doing so well financially. When our clients hurt we hurt. But the most gratifying part of being a CPA is being there when our client’s business is experiencing dramatic growth and knowing that we had something to do with it,” says Jill Rickards. “Lucky for us, we have clients who are very business savvy and tend to keep themselves ahead of the métier curve. But for those clients who do go through some rough patches, we stand by them and work with them to find a solution to their dilemma. The good news -- they always rebound. It’s all about timing,” explains Scott Rulon. Business is cyclical and like life, it’s all about timing. Sometimes businesses fail and it is not by any fault of the entrepreneur. Perhaps the market was in a downward flux. Maybe there was a political conflict that brought the enterprise to a stalemate. Or just maybe the business was destined to fail so that the entrepreneur could steer his vision to a different vantage point. No matter what the situation, the CPA firm of Rickards Long & Rulon always stand by their clients through thick and thin times. And for this writer, they have truly bucked the myth that all accountants are merely bean counters. With their combined knowledge and expertise and their dedication to trust, understanding and commitment, it is no wonder that they have such a great recipe for success.

Groom rules
You’ve popped the question and, prompted by your bride-to-be, have just now started to think about the details of your upcoming nuptials. For you this is a beginning. For her it is the culmination of years of planning.
While you pushed your dump truck through the sand, she dressed up in a girl-sized wedding gown, raided her mother’s jewelry box for just the right necklace, and hummed “Here Comes the Bride.” While your GI Joe was off saving the world, her Barbie was marrying him (or Ken) in clandestine weddings far from the eyes of her disapproving brothers. Just as she will do now, she planned each of those weddings carefully, selecting the dresses for the bride and bridesmaids, finding something other than fatigues for Joe to wear, and inviting Midge, Skipper and other guests to join in the fun. But today she has a real-life partner. Unlike those weddings of her past, today you will play a vital role. Officially, the bridegroom’s duties have been kept to a minimum and usually involve opening a wallet. Unofficially, your job is to be there for your future wife, show an interest in even the “silliest” details, and support her efforts to make this day a great start to a long and happy marriage. You may not care what pattern the wedding china is, but she does. It probably doesn’t matter to you whether the wedding colors are pink and yellow, or purple and gold. But it matters to her. So, in the coming weeks or months, take time to let her know that what’s important to her is important to you, too. You’re in this together for the long haul! That said, traditionally you: * Book the celebrant. Who will marry you two? Discuss it with your future wife, meet with your choice and book a date together. It is folly to select a date without making sure
44
12.2005 WINTER.indb 44
that the person you want to preside over your wedding is available. Moreover, if you are to be married in a church, you both may have to fulfill certain requirements before a wedding can take place. Do you need to take Pre-Cana classes? Must banns be published? *Make sure all the appropriate paper work has been filed so that a marriage certificate can be issued. Do you each need your birth certificates? Baptismal certificates? What last name will your wife use? It’s your job to make sure the I’s are dotted and the T’s are crossed.
show an interest in even the silliest details, and support her efforts to make this day a great start to a long and happy marriage. * Buy the wedding ring. Please note that I did not say “chooses” the wedding ring, although in decades past this might have been the case. Today, since the ring is something that you hope your future wife will wear everyday for the rest of her life, it should be a style of ring that she likes. It behooves you to involve her in
the selection process. Ditto for the engagement ring if you both have not selected one already. * Choose the best man. Here the decision is all yours – truly. You get to pick the man who will stand by your side as your pledge your love and fidelity to your future wife. While ideally the man you select should be someone your fiancé likes, since they will have little contact with each other apart from the wedding day, he and she need not be “best buds.” * Select the groomsmen and ushers. Generally the number of groomsmen is dependent upon the number of bridesmaids, but if you have a few “extra” men who you would like to take part, you can dub them ushers. The duties for both are virtually the same, except that ushers do not stand up with the bridal party and are often dressed less formally. You may also want to include your bride’s close male relatives in one of these roles. * Purchase your tux or suit and those of your groomsmen. In the past, the groom may have selected the tuxes or suits himself, but again this is one decision that is best made with the bride-to-be. She probably cares more about what you all will look like. You’re thinking monkey suit, she’s thinking wedding pictures. Just hand over your credit card and smile. * Plan and pay for the honeymoon. If you’re the romantic type (if you think a blender would make a nice first anniversary gift- you’re not!), and want to follow tradition, this may be one area where you can surprise your sweetheart. But be warned – it will be hard to pull off. You’ll have to explain what clothes she needs to pack based

on climate and planned activities. Will she need a sweater or a coat? Dancing shoes or walking shoes or both? Here it’s best to call for backup. Your sister, her sister, or either mother can assist you in preparing for your romantic getaway. Also, if you’re planning an out-of-the-country trip and she doesn’t have a passport, you’re sunk. * Arrange transportation. How will you get to the church or City Hall on time? How will you and your bride get from the ceremony to the reception? How will you travel to your honeymoon destination? You need to address these questions and other details that may arise as you plan travel arrangements. For example, if you drive your car to the airport, how will it get home? Or will you park it for two weeks in airport parking? (Ouch!) * Order and buy flowers for the groomsmen and pay for the bride’s and bridesmaids’ bouquets and the mothers’ corsages. Ask your bride’s advice before you order anything. You want all the flowers to coordinate and she’ll surely have an opinion. * Plan the stag party with the best man. Be careful here. While you are still technically single, anything outrageous like a stripper or scantily clad girl popping out of a cake might not go over too well with your soon-to-be-partner. You don’t want her angry on your wedding night! * Select a gift for the bride. While this is optional, in centuries past the groom has traditionally given the bride a piece of jewelry to “seal the deal.” Today, a small token to show your love adds a nice touch and needn’t be expensive. Consider something meaningful– a charm for her bracelet that reminds you of your first date, a CD containing “your” song, or a carefully composed poem professing your love. You blender guys might want to ask for backup here, too! * Buy gifts for others in the bridal party. Your bride will want to be involved in this process. While you can pick the gifts for the best man and other groomsmen, help her select gifts for the maid of honor, the other bridesmaids, and, as a nice touch, your mother and new mother-in-law. * Prepare a speech. At the reception, you will want to take time to thank everyone in the wedding party for their service. You’ll want to thank guests for their gifts and for being a part of your special day. You may also want to thank the bride’s parents for raising such a wonderful daughter. Finally, you should plan to toast the bridesmaids. * Attend the wedding rehearsal, pack your bags for the honeymoon, arrange for someone to take care of the tux and wedding dress after you both leave for the honeymoon and have a great life together.

But when the Hutchinsons were approached with the concept, being the true public servants they are, they took the idea a step further. They offered to host, as well as prepare, an authentic German Dinner in their home! One can imagine the anticipation to package this evening and have it auctioned! Joanne DeLeon, Broker Associate/ Partner The Group, Inc, thought it was a great idea, too! As the auctioneer offered the evening called, “Conversations with the Mayor,” she bid and bought the Hutchinson’s gracious offering. The package included Jacki Kramer’s TLC Limousine Service, Doug and Cathy Hutchinson cooking and serving an authentic German dinner in their home, fine German wines provided by Robert and Pamela Jones and live music provided by Peter Mark Piotrowski (Piatro). The chilly, December 2nd, night began with a warm handshake as Mayor Hutchinson greeted each guest upon the limousine’s arrival. Joanne DeLeon coined the evening “magical” as the guests immediately warmed up with Piatro and a Piesporter Michelsberg wine toast in the holiday adorned coziness of the Hutchinson’s home. So began an evening of interesting stories and conversations, as Doug and Cathy recounted their journey into politics, their love and commitment for the city of Fort Collins, as well as tidbits of their personal history. A dessert medley of fruits, cheeses, Stollen and a Riesling Kabinett deliciously ended the fanfare of Cathy’s exquisitely prepared German cuisine. An old photo was passed around the dinner table, showing a very young Cathy and Doug standing next to one another in their kindergarten class picture, taken at Laurel Elementary, Fort Collins, Colorado. No wonder the guests felt
