rehabilitate the riverside in Almada
reuse the nymphaeum in Italy
The Almada area is mainly made up of ruins and old abandoned buildings. As a result, the urban development consisted first of all in restoring and reusing the existing buildings in cafes and restaurants to animate this area. Then, the first thing that struck us during the site visit, was the presence of a large number of street vendors in the neighborhood. From this observation, one of the ruins was transformed into an open market. Finally a hotel was placed, since it is an interesting geographical area in front of the river

While Genazzano is full of local natural and architectural gems like the nymphaeum, they are poorly linked, both visually and functionally. Our proposal, as a fifth evolution for the site aims to transform it into a much needed discernible gathering landmark, assembling and reuniting the phases and users, locals and tourists. Honoring the site’s genius loci, we reworked the key elements from previous phases from the octagon to the scuci e cuci interventions, and introduced newer ones to transform the Nymphaeum into a cultural and artistic portal, linking the old part of town to the newer urban fabric and signaling the city entrance. The nymphaeum and its garden are both the exhibition and the exhibitor, the observed and the observatory, home to both a permanent exhibition, showcasing the building’s history (which you can walk through or float above) and a temporary one for local savoir-faire.
The grafted theater, as a 2nd staircase blends seamlessly into the nymphaeum garden by creating a northern water pathway, Retracing both time (by following the construction phases) and space by molding to its natural ry. At times, the copper, traditionally used for piping, comes to refurbish lost elements, thus recreating the always be, a work in progress. The nymphaeum thus maintains part of its intrigue
northern urban corridor. From an octagon to another, water is reintroduced to create a sensorly stimulating natural slope. The extension is a concrete fake ruin, an organized chaos full of the nymphaeum’s histothe effect of a worksite by mimicking erected pending construction elements, showing that it was and will
The main idea was to focus on the natural elements of the site which are the strenght of this area. Bouregregs’ river, the hills, and the landscape. On the second hand, there is two important architectural monuments : the theater of Zaha Hadid and the new Tower of Mohamed V. By sketching visual breakthroughs to each of this elements we obtain our first design grid. Therefore a pedestrian path is created to enhace Bouregreg’s riversde
We worked on Almirante Reis Avenue, which is a main axis of the city. It links the airport to the rest of the city. This 6km long avenue presents several problems both in the functions it performs and in its landscape. This is where we established a first analysis in order to familiarize ourselves with the city of Lisbon and its different aspects. The analysis consisted of reading the pdm maps (equivalent development plan) understanding them, then trying to summarize the information in the form of plans and diagrams. then a secondary analysis to draw the problems to be solved. We ended up with an urban proposal, then a rehabilitation of a building in ruins.
Before trying to find an urban solution, we first tried to find a problem. The problem we tried to solve is the segregation between the different areas of the same Avenue. Therefore, we tried to work on Alameda (public garden in the upper area of the avenue which is neglected and not used by pedestrians) to improve the upper part of the avenue and at the same time connect it to other green spaces.
Connectivity was the key word of the project: connecting the park with the streets, connecting the park with the metro station and connecting the park with the green spaces. We tried to think about connectivity at 2 levels: horizontally and vertically.
Proposal plan
Skatepark section Metro and park sectionThe idea was to continue with the same problematic as in the second phase and try to attract people to the upper part of the avenue. As the avenue lacks artistic activities, the program developed was a cultural center. As stated in the PDM, this building, formerly a hospital and a church, cannot be modified. The main challenge was therefore to create a new space in the existing building. Our new space is shaped around the previous walls of the building emphasizing the contrast between the existing and the proposal.
