A LETTER FROM JENNIFER JONES

Hello Lynchburg!

Lynchburg Parks and Recreation Director

I have so many wonderful news morsels to report this quarter. The Virginia Commonwealth Games had an increase of 32 % participation this year during the main games weekend (July 21-24). Compared to 2016’s 21 sports and 4,685 participants, the 2017 Games Weekend totaled 28 sports with 6,191 participants. With participation numbers increasing, you can bet that the economic impact will benefit our City. Lynchburg Parks and Recreation Department was proud to partner with Blackwater Rugby Football Club (RFC) to host the first adult rugby tournament as part of the Virginia Commonwealth Games. We appreciate our partners Blackwater RFC as well as Central Virginia United Soccer who coordinated and hosted respectively. Peaks View Park played host to both the 32 men’s slow-pitch softball teams and 71 girls fast-pitch softball teams. Visitors paid many a compliment to your beautiful park. A new chapter is being written for Miller Park and its swimming pool, as the venue hosted the Virginia Commonwealth Games Youth Swimming event (more compliments). In September 2107, Peaks View will host Virginia Commonwealth Games Mountain Biking Championship with Blackwater Bikes and Greater Lynchburg Off-Road Cyclists as the coordinators. Finally, we celebrate our Neighborhood Centers three basketball teams (8th, 10th and 12th grades) who had a good showing in the Virginia Commonwealth Games basketball competition. Tereika Grooms, Senior Recreation Specialist, said about this experience, “They (your neighborhood center children) truly enjoyed every bit of it, from having jerseys to being able to play against fellow friends and even having transportation to their games. They are already asking if they can do it next year!” Oh, and in case you hadn’t heard, Liberty University and Lynchburg won the bid to host the State Games of America in 2019. This is an incredible win for Lynchburg – we beat out Ames, IA and Lincoln, NE. Yeah Baby! We are going to continue to ride the sports tourism wave and team up with Liberty University with a bid to host the Virginia Senior Games from 2021 to 2024. We’ll expect to see our super Lynchburg seniors on the courts and fields displaying their athletic prowess and having fun. Finally, we have big plans for Lynchburg City Stadium. After all, you invested 8 million dollars in a state-of-the-art stadium; we plan to get a ROI and peacock about our remarkable high school venue. I was super proud of Lynchburg Museum Director Doug Harvey and our Museum System as they partnered with local veterans’ organizations to have the Desmond Doss (WWII conscientious objector of Hacksaw Ridge fame) highway marker dedication in Fairview Heights, just one block from Desmond Doss’s home. An interpretative marker at Monument Terrace in his Doss’s honor was also unveiled. Down the street at the Lynchburg Community Market, a beet (as in root vegetable) has stolen the show. Hundreds of people have attended the cooking demonstrations and other programs as part of the “We Got the Beet Campaign.” The Beet is also overseeing a million dollar renovation to the Lynchburg Community Market Park and parking deck. The Beet will be on hand to cut the ribbon in September. As we wrap up our “Please Do Hug the Trees” Campaign, we ask that you take time to complete the National Citizens Survey coming out this fall. It was your survey responses that prompted our conservation campaign. The Guinness World Book Record Attempt at the World Largest Tree Hug fell a little short – however, we had over 1,500 folks turn on out April 29th to hug the trees while the Monacan Indian Nation played their Honor Song. It was a powerful 60 seconds for all those tree huggers as we celebrated nature and intended reverence for our environment. Thank you Lynchburg for supporting your Parks and Recreation Department. Naturally Yours,

Jennifer Jones, Director

Q:

What’s your first memory of Lynchburg Parks and Recreation?

A:

I grew up down the street from Riverside Park and went to Garland-Rodes Elementary School. I remember playing on the swings. Later on, they built the tennis courts, so I took tennis lessons there. When I was 10 or 11, we would go through the woods and cut up bamboo sticks, and sometimes make fishing poles. Mainly, I liked looking at the overlook and going to the swings and that kind of stuff.

Q:

What are your favorite parks and/or trails in Lynchburg?

A:

It’s a cross between Riverside because I grew up there, but I really like Blackwater Creek Park. I’ve had cookouts there, my church has a lot of events there, and baseball games. I go there a lot, more so than Riverside Park. In my work at Jubilee Family Development Center (Councilman Wilder is the Executive Director there), we take our kids there to play on the baseball field, walk on the trail and have cookouts.

Q:

Why do you think Parks and Recreation is essential to our community?

A: City Council Spotlight:

STERLING WILDER Lynchburg City Councilman Sterling Wilder (Ward II) grew up on Ash Street, not too far from Riverside Park. Growing up, he spent a lot of time at Riverside with his five sisters, on the playground and at the James River overlook. We recently sat down with Wilder to chat about his experiences with Lynchburg Parks and Recreation.

One thing, it helps us have a healthier Lynchburg. You can really enjoy the environment with your family, talking and meditating, exercising and enjoying nature. We’re so busy on our computers and iPhones and iPads, and it gives us an opportunity to break away from that social media and enjoy our surrounds and the environment on the trails. I think we have to do that. You get so entangled with life. We need to stop and really enjoy life.

Q: A:

Can you tell me about a time you’ve spent with family in our parks?

My parents were really old, so I went there more so with my siblings. We’d go on Sundays and walk in the park, taking pictures of the overlook over the James River. Those are the most precious moments, taking pictures there and overlooking the river.

Legacy Museum of African American History Presents Kwanzaa Holiday Celebration

“Visual Voices”- An Afternoon of Artistic Expressions

December 29, 2017 2-4 pm Miller Center Theater

Friday October 27, 2017 3-5pm Miller Center Theater

Kwanzaa, a secular festival or holiday is observed as a celebration of African American culture, heritage, unity, and traditional values. Kwanzaa was created in 1966 by Dr. Maulana Karenga, professor and department chair of Africana Studies at California State University. Dr. Karenga’s goal was to start a holiday that paid tribute to the roots and traditional cultural values from the African continent as applied to everyday living. It has now been accepted as a weeklong festival held in the United States and other nations in the African diaspora.

Spend an afternoon with local artists exploring the history of their artistic works. This program will provide an opportunity to view, listen to and discuss the process of developing various mediums in artistic storytelling. Program is open to all ages and light refreshments will be provided.

The observance of Kwanzaa is celebrated for seven nights with special significance given to the lighting of the seven colored candles, and discussion of their Swahili symbols and principles. Family and friends participate with poetry readings, songs and African dance selections. The Legacy Museum has often observed this holiday festival and this year invites the Lynchburg Community to join us for the 2017 celebration. Lynchburg Parks & Rec: Fall/Winter 2017

Lynchburg's Liquid Superhighway Doug Harvey, Museum Director, Lynchburg Museum System

I

n 1784, George Washington had a vision, born from years as a surveyor and military leader on the frontier: Link the James River to western rivers that flowed into the Ohio, the Mississippi, and ultimately the Gulf of Mexico. For years, boatmen had traveled the James River, carrying crops and materials to Richmond and bringing goods back. Rocks, rapids, low water and floods meant loads were small and danger great. Washington’s dream was to build a canal and turnpike west to the Kanawha River. From there, the Ohio and Mississippi rivers could be navigated for thousands of miles. In 1835, the James River and Kanawha Company began building a canal between Richmond and Lynchburg. Hundreds of laborers, many slaves or Irish immigrants, performed the back-breaking work. On one day in 1838, 15 to 20 workers died. The first boat from Richmond reached Lynchburg in December 1840. For the next 40 years, freight and passengers traveled this superhighway, connecting Lynchburg to the world. Lynchburg, known for its tobacco, became one of the wealthiest communities in America, and as tobacco moved east, books, spices, French wine and more came back. By 1850, however, railroads began connecting across Virginia. By 1861, canal use began to decline. The Civil War and major floods further weakened canal operations.

By 1881, the canal company was bankrupt. The Richmond and Alleghany Railroad took over the land. Steel rails were placed on the towpaths. The days of canal transportation were over. ECHOES OF THE CANAL

T

oday, little evidence of the canal remains. On Ninth Street, an arched, stone bridge crosses the old canal bed. The canal’s outline is visible below and east of the bridge, near where the Lynch family, the city’s founders, operated a ferry in 1757. Stone piers, part of an aqueduct system, also remain. In 2015, Lynchburg Parks and Recreation worked with a landscape architect on a plan to tell the story of the canal, with the bridge as the centerpiece. The plan included interpretive signs, replicas or outlines of canal and river boats, picnic facilities and other amenities. A park, where our city was founded and where so much history took place, would be an asset to the community. Located along the river, the park would anchor the lower end of Ninth Street. With Monument Terrace and the Lynchburg Museum at the upper end of Ninth, there would be a corridor of history and natural beauty, attracting residents and visitors alike.

In Lynchburg, parts of the canal were used until 1940, supplying water to mills and foundries along Jefferson Street.

The donkey, General Boom, seeks to form a band for the town of Bremen using the outcast farm animals as musicians. It doesn’t take long for them to discover that they have to consider each other’s feelings before they can make music. But, can the four very different creatures band together before pirates steal their instruments? Free FamilyFriendly Opera, Miller Center Theater Sa 11/18

Urban Explorers College Hill Basecamp

In the heart of the city, College Hill Center, served as the basecamp for urban exploration and outdoor adventure. Summer treks included hikes to Percival’s Island and Hollins Mill, as well as walks along the earthen Freer Loop trail. The explorers ventured outside of the City limits to explore the expanse of our natural and cultural resources, visiting Richmond’s Maymont Park, the Blue Ridge Parkway and the National Mall and Memorial Parks in Washington, D.C. The Teen Urban Explorers program was funded in part by an agreement with the Lynchburg Hillcats.
