ELL, WHAT CAN I SAY? It’s been quite a year. I’ve been selling homes for 15 years and have never seen a market quite like this. This must be the elusive “Sellers’ Market” that I’ve always heard about but, like Big Foot, wasn’t sure it actually existed. The one piece of advice I can give is that if you want to sell your house, NOW IS THE TIME - lots of buyers and very few sellers. Don’t get me wrong, there is no such thing as a slam dunk. Transactions can be complicated with lots of moving parts. Luckily, we have thousands under our belt. I’m proud to say that Jay crushed it again this year and personally sold more than $100 million in sales volume. That’s right, he is once again the top agent in Bucks County by a landslide! And he did it with only 9 active months (real estate was not considered essential business). Just a quick personal recap from 2020, a year of mixed emotions. •A fter a long, hard battle with Verizon, we were finally able to correct our bill. Yay! •M y dog and cat finally get along after an exhausting number of chases through my house (my hardwood floors are much happier). •W e finally had a decent snow fall, making the winter a little more enjoyable. • I t’s the one year anniversary of this magazine! Thank you to our creative crew, especially April Hynes. Most of all thank you to our readers and customers who make this publication possible. Our family here has grown and we are so fortunate to have the following agents (and all around great people) working with us: • Lorraine Gross • Al Lucci • Susan Greenwood • Howard Agree • Kerrie MacPherson • Luz Cesario • Justin Lucci • Julie Spaziano

We can’t have rainbows without the rain. Welcome 2021, I hope you enjoy!

WELL-DESIGNED KITCHEN PROVIDES A COMFORTABLE WORKSPACE THAT NOT ONLY LOOKS GOOD BUT IS PRACTICAL. The thought put into the kitchen sets the tone and

feel of a home. With kitchen renovations being one of the most popular types of home improvement, we sat down with Bruce Roth, owner of Sycamore Kitchens & More, to talk a little about his business and how he and his staff can help plan an effective kitchen layout that fits a client’s space, expectations and budget.

What does your company do? Sycamore Kitchens & More is a full-service kitchen design and remodeling company. We provide quality cabinetry and beautiful quartz and quartzite countertops in our one-of-a-kind designs for a kitchen created especially for you.

In what areas does your company specialize? Sycamore Kitchens & More specializes in creating beautifully designed kitchens that enhance the quality of life for our clients. We have developed systems that allow our clients to realize their dream kitchen in a matter of weeks. From creative design with an eye towards form and function, to quality products, exceptional customer service and attention to detail, the staff at Sycamore Kitchens & More will create that one-ofa-kind kitchen you will love to come home to.

How long has your company been in business and how did you get started? Since our inception in 2007, we have grown to be one of the top ten dealers of quality Yorktowne Cabinetry in the entire country! My experience in construction project management coupled with design studio management for a large builder provided me with a unique skill set to build this company from a vision. I realized the need in the area for a full service kitchen design and remodeling company. My goal was to hire talented designers and meticulous craftsmen to develop Sycamore Kitchens & More into the company everyone should consider when thinking about a new kitchen.

What should potential clients know about your company? Our mission statement says it all: “We will treat each client’s home as we would our own.” We have systems in place to ensure a smooth process from the initial design until the very last knob is installed. Many of our clients have raved that their new kitch-

en project was the best remodeling experience they have ever had. In addition, considering all the factors including peace of mind that the project will be done right, on time and within budget, Sycamore Kitchens proves time and time again to be quite the value.

What drives you to do the hard work necessary to run your own business? I wake up every day in a great mood because I know that I will be making someone happy with the progress of their new kitchen. My father taught me “If you take care of the client, everything else will take care of itself.” In memory of my father, the best part is seeing how delighted the client is at the end of a project – that’s what really makes it worthwhile. If you are thinking about a kitchen remodel, call or visit their design studio in Newtown, Pennsylvania to discuss transformative kitchen remodeling designs and ideas for your home. ●

Home Design Trends 2021 Style

H

OME – it’s not just the place for

sleeping anymore. It’s become “the office”, “the gym” and “the restaurant” all combined in one. Given our new circumstances, design trends are changing. The past year has given us all a time to re-connect with our homes. Here’s a look at some of the latest trends now that many of our priorities and preferences have shifted, making us re-evaluate our current living conditions.

22

J AY S PA Z I A N O R E A L E S TAT E

Creative Storage

Designers are indicating that there will be a more creative approach to increasing storage at home from now on. Low profile storage units in multiple rooms of the home – ottoman style furniture, sideboards and cabinets – means games and toys, along with any paperwork, can be quickly tidied away at the end of the day. Multipurpose furniture that combines seating and storage is proving invaluable for both the “dining room meets the office” or “kitchen meets the office”. An L-shaped banquette bench can turn any corner into a cozy destination. Not only are they helpful for quickly stashing away work or school supplies, you can use them to store seldom used baking trays or even small appliances.

Home Offices

Limited space to work from home was the #1 complaint from homeowners about their home in 2020. Creating a private, dedicated and defined space is more important now than ever before. Trends are indicating a mixed approach to working going forward, but any way you look at it, the home office is here to stay. And it’s not just limited to adults – the incorporation of desks and workspaces throughout the home is for all members of the family. Creating multiple workspaces throughout the home means that several people can work from home at the same time without bothering each other. Rooms have become multi-functional, and just because you may be limited in space doesn’t mean that you need to compromise on style. Fold-up wall desks maximize square footage by neatly folding away when the room is needed for other tasks, but they also allow for any wall to be turned into an effective home office. Adding additional wall shelves to store books and papers adds additional storage space for 70 Sutphin Pines, Yardley busy areas.

Stylish Desk Chairs

A well-equipped workspace has become increasingly important. As more and more people add a home office or incorporate home office space into their decor, the need for ergonomic, yet stylish, desk chairs has increased. If you’re introducing a desk into your living room, you don’t want your chair to look like it came out of a corporate conference room. No longer relying on drab corporate colors, we’ll see stores and designers offering style, function and ergonomics that will blend with home aesthetics and give users the comfort they need.

192 Brownsburg Road, Upper Makefield

The Home Spa

301 Dorothy Lane, Chalfont

After a tough day in the home office, give yourself a much-needed visit to the home spa! You’ll need a place to fully relax and de-stress. To accomplish the at-home spa, trends are showing that adding a steam function to a shower, or removing the shower altogether and opting for a large luxurious bath can provide different ways to relax with water. Added options like heated tile floors, a freestanding tub and a wall mounted TV can definitely recreate the feeling of being in an

authentic spa. Shower remodels including a built-in shower seat, storage wall niches and a rainfall showerhead can help recreate the spa experience. If space allows, a fireplace can help enhance the atmosphere and provide warmth! Also, allow as much natural light as possible to flood your bathroom – it’s incredibly therapeutic.

Kitchen Re-Imagined

The heart of the home is the kitchen, now more than ever before. So the room used most frequently, now needs to be multi-functional for food prep, eating, entertaining – not to mention homework and kids’ crafts. Trending now are larger kitchen islands with integrated seating along with banquette seating and desk areas as discussed above. Antimicrobial surfaces and coatings to kitchen worktops that are easy to clean are in high demand. Certain materials, such as stainless steel and copper, which are inherently antibacterial, have become increasingly popular. Other materials gaining popularity and making their way into kitchens are ones that are non-porous and that germs and bacteria have a harder time sticking to such as laminate, cement and smoked glass. People are also looking for increased automation and fewer door pulls with an emphasis on motion sensors or touch sensor technology, especially for faucets. 24

J AY S PA Z I A N O R E A L E S TAT E

Kitchen Pantries

Like closets, pantries are making a comeback and getting a makeover. With more families preparing meals together at home, another trend is for larger and more organized pantry space. A functional design with pull out shelves, rotating corner shelves and modern lighted drawers will keep you stocked and well organized. Some trends show adding recycling bins and even a charging station for phones, laptops and other electronics. Opting for pocket-door or barn door access is a great way to add some style without taking up valuable floor space.

At-Home Gyms

At home gyms have become more than an exercise bike in front of the TV. The home gym should be viewed as a destination that feels appealing. It’s important to create a space that helps you unwind, not just a place to work out. Fresh air and natural light are great ways to make a basement gym space feel healthy and connected with nature and the outside. With the range of compact equipment available, and home fitness classes, it’s never been easier for people to train from home and actually enjoy it.

The Drop Zone

Trends are showing that where space permits, people will want dual entrances into their homes even more so now than before. A secondary entrance or mud room that leads directly into a utility space has become coveted real estate. This is an area where we can stash away our coats and shoes, store delivered items, and store backpacks and briefcases. A storage bench combined with a wall shelf and a coat tree or coat hooks makes for a friendly setup that’s as functional as it is appealing. Decorate it so it’s an inviting spot to pause for a change of footwear. Tuck shoes away under benches. Give family members their own dedicated space. Use baskets to store and hide comfy slippers or pet accessories out of sight. An easy-to-clean throw rug, especially one made for outdoor use, stops family members from tracking outside dirt into the home. Tip: Adding plants can help lift your mood and refresh the air! ●

Bucks County’s Covered Bridges

R

OLLING HILLS, SMALL TOWNS, PICTURESQUE VIEWS DOTTED WITH HORSES, COWS AND FARMS – it’s no

wonder that Bucks County is one of the birthplaces of covered bridges in the United States. Tucked away like hidden gems in the countryside, Bucks County is home to 12 covered bridges, each having its own unique characteristics and story. When you look at or cross a covered bridge, it’s like getting a glimpse into the past bringing thoughts of history and romance. Covered bridges remind us of simpler times when life moved more slowly. Pennsylvania has more covered bridges than any other state. The first documented covered bridge was built in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania in 1805, and it crossed the Schuylkill River. At one time there were 36 covered bridges in Bucks County. Many of these covered bridges crossed the Delaware River and linked towns all across the region. Why were the bridges covered? There are many different theories: to provide shelter for a weary traveler, shade from the summer sun, or to calm fearful animals when crossing water. While all these reasons may have some truth, the main reason is a practical one: the cover provided protection to the decking trusses from the weather. By having a covering, it also reinforced the overall strength of the bridge.

Fun fact:

Did you ever wonder why most covered bridges were painted red? Combining dirt and rust with paint (or a paint-like substance) turned out to be an inexpensive pigment! Both bridges and barns were painted red for this reason. J AY S PA Z I A N O . C O M

Most covered bridges are located in a rustic, charming setting and have become the favored backdrop for wedding or family pictures. Sure, they make a great photo op, but visiting one or maybe doing a tour of these fantastic bridges is a great way to spend time with friends or family. Take in a little fresh air and see a little history! The Bucks County Covered Bridge Society offers a complete tour map for your own self-guided tour. Whether visiting just one, a few, or many, the self-guided tour is designed so that you can start at any one of the bridges. Handy GPS coordinates are given for each bridge. The full tour, beginning at Washington Crossing Historic Park, is 90 miles and makes a large circle through Bucks County. Make some memories and enjoy the beautiful views along the way. Happy travels!

Fun fact:

Hollow Horn & Caffrey Roads, Tinicum, PA 18920 Located in Tinicum Township and built in 1872, this bridge crosses the Tinicum Creek, and it’s one of the longest covered bridges in Bucks County.

Knecht’s Covered Bridge Knecht’s Road, Springfield, PA 18081

Built in 1873 and located in Springfield Township and is also known as “Slifer’s Bridge”. Knecht’s Covered Bridge is built of hemlock and crosses Durham Creek.

Loux Covered Bridge Wismer Road, Pipersville, PA 18901

Covered bridges are also known as “kissing bridges” or even “wishing bridges”. Cabin Run Covered Bridge Covered Bridge Road, Plumstead, PA 18949 Located in Plumstead Township and built in 1871, this bridge stretches across Cabin Run Creek.

Erwinna Covered Bridge Geigel Hill Road, Tinicum, PA 18920 Located in Tinicum Township and built in 1871 (although some county records suggest it was built in 1832), this is Bucks County’s shortest covered bridge and crosses the Lodi Creek.

28

Frankenfield Covered Bridge

J AY S PA Z I A N O R E A L E S TAT E

Located not far from Cabin Run Covered Bridge, the Loux Covered Bridge was built in 1874, is located in Plumstead Township and crosses Cabin Run Creek. It is the only bridge in the county painted all white.

Mood’s Covered Bridge

Blooming Glen Road, Perkasie, PA 18944 Located in East Rockhill Township and crosses the east branch of the Perkiomen Creek. The original bridge, built in 1874, was destroyed by fire and the replacement bridge was built in 2004. This bridge is one of the most heavily used covered bridges in Bucks County with an average of 2,000 vehicle crossings per day. If you visit, see if you can locate an original piece of wooden truss that was built into the new bridge.

Pine Valley Covered Bridge Old Iron Hill Road, Chalfont, PA 18914

Built in 1842 and located in New Britain Township, the Pine Valley Covered Bridge crosses Pine Creek Run. Because of its close location to Covered Bridge Park, a popular recreation area, this bridge also makes the list as one of Bucks County’s most used covered bridges by cars. Because of its high use, this bridge is frequently lit up at night.

Schofield Ford Covered Bridge

Van Sant Covered Bridge

Tyler State Park, Newtown, PA 18940

Covered Bridge Road, New Hope, PA 18938

This bridge is also known as “Twining Ford” and is located in Tyler State Park, Newtown Township and crosses the Neshaminy Creek. The original bridge built in 1873 was destroyed by arsonists in 1991. The new bridge opened in 1997. Not open to vehicle traffic, this bridge is only accessible by foot or horse trails. It is the only Bucks County covered bridge that is unpainted.

Located in Solebury Township and built in 1875, the Van Sant Covered Bridge crosses the Pidcock Creek and is located near Washington Crossing Historic Park. Rumor has it this bridge may be haunted. ●

Sheard’s Mill Covered Bridge Covered Bridge Road between East Rockhill and Haycock Townships, Perkasie, PA 18944 Built in 1873 and spanning two townships, Sheard’s Mill Covered Bridge crosses the Tohickon Creek close to Lake Nockamixon.

South Perkasie Covered Bridge Lenape Park, Walnut Street, Perkasie, PA 18944 Located in Perkasie Borough and built in 1832, this is the 3rd oldest town lattice bridge in the United States. This bridge is only open to foot traffic and does not cross water. It was moved from its original location in 1959 to Lenape Park. If you plan on visiting, check to see if the bridge is under renovation. A $100,000 state grant to pay for the structure’s restoration had been granted in September 2020.

Loux Covered Bridge Wismer Road, Pipersville, PA 18901

Uhlerstown Covered Bridge Uhlerstown Road, Tinicum, PA 19029 Located in Tinicum Township, the Uhlerstown Covered Bridge is the only covered bridge in Bucks County that crosses the Delaware Canal. Another unique feature is this bridge is the only covered bridge in Bucks County to have low-set windows on each side. A sign on the bridge indicates that it was built in 1832, however, this date is questioned by some historians due to county records indicating a built date of 1856.
