Jay Spaziano Real Estate & Lifestyle Magazine Dear Readers, As we anticipate the arrival of spring, Jay and I wanted to let everyone in on some exciting news – we are now a full-service brokerage in New Jersey! Look out for our signs now on both sides of the Delaware River. This seemed like a natural progression for so many reasons:
•W e have seen an uptick in buyers crossing the River and it makes the transition easier having one broker handle everything.
•O ur office in Washington Crossing is physically so close that it’s convenient to hop the little bridge and travel to and from Pennsylvania. And yes, it’s two lanes so lookout for your side mirrors!
• P ennington is my home away from home. Although I grew up in Newtown, I went to The Pennington School where I thrived and have so many years of amazing high school memories. More on this in an upcoming issue . . .
•M y undergraduate degree is from The College of New Jersey, and if you haven’t seen the campus lately, you really should. I’ve always loved the architecture of the old buildings and coupled with modern amenities, it is definitely an upgrade from when I attended.
We are almost out of the dog days of winter, so hang in there everyone and we will all be outside soaking up the sun soon! Stay well. Hope you enjoy!

Bug Off! Get rid of pesky insects with a plethora of pretty plants.
04
J AY S PA Z I A N O R E A L E S TAT E
AHH, SPRING IS ON THE WAY. We can think of spend-
ing time outside again, without snow shovels or sleds. There’s nothing quite like that first quiet moment on the patio. . . the sun is shining, your beverage is perfect and then you hear it – the buzzing of the mosquito. Your hopes of enjoying that moment of peace are quickly pushed aside as you look for something to swat the bug away so you don’t become the next “all you can eat mosquito buffet.” There’s no such thing as a pest-free garden, but there are some types of plants that those pesky insects like mosquitos and gnats do not like to be around. So, if you’re trying to keep those annoying bugs at bay without any chemicals, you can try placing a few of these plants around your patio or deck. It’s a simple way to repel some unwanted pests and add a touch of beauty to your backyard at the same time.
Marigolds
Their scent scares away mosquitoes and plant lice. It can even keep rabbits away. If you have a vegetable garden, these are the plants to have in it. They are also helpful planted near front or back doors to keep those pesky mosquitoes away.
Chrysanthemums
These are the powerhouse of bug deterring flowers. Ants, Japanese beetles, roaches, bed bugs, spider mites, silverfish and ticks will stay away if you have some of these around.
Mint
Mint plants can repel spiders, ants and mosquitoes. It also smells great, and freshly cut sprigs can be used as an air freshener. Mint can be added to many food dishes or salads – use in fresh lemonade or your next mojito! However, mint can overtake your garden quite easily so it’s best to plant in pots or within a barrier. Prune monthly to keep it under control.
Basil
This wonderful herb repels mosquitoes and houseflies. Planting by doors may also discourage them from getting inside. Plant in containers around outdoor areas where you like to relax or entertain. It’s also great to have fresh basil around for cooking all types of dishes. Use it to make homemade pesto, toss with fresh grilled vegetables or simply add to sandwiches.
Citronella/Lemongrass
We have all seen and probably own a few citronella candles, but a lot of people don’t know citronella is actually a grass. You can plant this ornamental grass in gardens or have it in planters near your doors to keep mosquitoes and flying insects from getting inside when you open the door.
Lavender
Plant lavender near windows and doors so the scent wafts into your home.
This beautiful plant has a scent that gnats, moths, flies and mosquitoes hate, but a smell that so many people love! Plant it near windows and doors so the scent wafts into your home. Placing tied bouquets around the house helps keep flies outdoors. Even when dried, they still can repel those pesky bugs and add beauty!
Chives
This plant repels Japanese beetles, ants and aphids. It’s also a great cooking herb. Sprinkle on top of salads, add to eggs or use as a baked potato topping. A simple but flavorful use is to mix with softened butter and serve with fresh bread. J AY S PA Z I A N O . C O M

When sprinkled around your home, dried bay leaves can help ward off nuisance insects like roaches, ants and fleas. Petunias
Add beauty and color to your yard while repelling asparagus beetles, leafhoppers, various kinds of aphids, tomato worms and a variety of other pests. This flower is another great one for vegetable gardens. Petunias don’t actually repel bugs with a scent, they have sticky hairs that actually trap them. The insects can’t get away and break down naturally in the soil, where they become nutrients for the plants!
Bay Leaf
When sprinkled around your home, dried bay leaves can help ward off nuisance insects like roaches, ants and fleas. The whole leaf can also be placed in containers of flour, rice, and other dry goods or taped inside kitchen cabinets and the pantry to keep those pesky bugs out of your containers and cabinets. Bay leaf can also be added to roasts and soups for extra flavor.
Garlic
Not only is garlic good for keeping vampires away, but bugs do not like it either! If planted close to tomato plants, garlic helps deter red spider mites. If you have roses, plant garlic nearby as it helps repel aphids from eating them. As we all know, garlic can be used in all sorts of dishes. Garlic, basil and tomatoes are popular companions to plant together. With this “made to be together trio,” combine together to whip up some fresh tomato sauce. You can also combine the three and toss with fresh mozzarella to make a caprese salad or chop and make fresh bruschetta. 06

Rosemary
Rosemary is such a multi-tasking plant. Plant in your vegetable garden and around doors to keeps pests away. Rosemary repels a wide variety of bugs that want to feed on your vegetable garden plants. Fresh rosemary has so many uses too – use as an air freshener, as an herb when cooking or put a sprig as a garnish for your cocktail. It’s also great to use as a table decoration or add to a vase of fresh flowers. When you are outside roasting marshmallows, toss a few sprigs into the fire pit – the scented smoke helps keep away unwanted insects. We hoped you enjoyed this list of common, easy to find bug repelling plants and herbs and are willing to try placing a few around your home. It’s a great way to combat these pests naturally. Go ahead, try and use the herbs at your next cookout to make it even tastier and dine al fresco in peace. To ensure the safety of all our furry friends out there, we recommend that you supervise all pets around your garden and plants. ●

Ricotta Cheese Gnocchi OUR RECIPE FEATURE FOR THIS ISSUE WAS SUBMITTED TO US BY MARISSA STAUFF, our intern here at the office. She’s 17 years old,
a junior at Nazareth Academy High School, and she loves baking and cooking. Here is the recipe that she wants to share with all of you, and the story behind it! When last spring started, we all ended up with a lot of time on our hands and not a lot to do. I decided to spend my time in my favorite place – the kitchen. What can I say? I just love food! One day, I wanted to make pasta. We had done this as a family activity and all our previous attempts never turned out quite right. It was either too doughy, too sticky or just not the right thickness. So, I changed course a little and I decided to try making gnocchi. My grandmother would do this several times a year and I always loved it. Gnocchi means lump or knot in Italian and is sometimes referred to as “little pillows”. I decided to go with the ricotta version since it is lighter and fluffier than its potato cousin. After a lot of trial and error, I have the best ricotta cheese gnocchi recipe and I want to share it with everyone. And I promise, it is easy! ● 10

Ingredients (serves 4)
Directions
• 16 ounces of whole milk ricotta cheese (well drained)
1. Combine the ricotta cheese, eggs,
- Best if left in the refrigerator for 30 minutes before using
- If you want to make your gnocchi even more savory, make your own ricotta cheese! It is a lot simpler than you may think and only takes half an hour
• 2 eggs • 3/4 cup of freshly grated parmesan cheese • 3 /4 - 1 cup of flour (I recommend using half all-purpose flour and half 00 flour, but any type of flour works!) • Y our favorite pasta sauce (I recommend a blush or Bolognese sauce – or just butter!) • Freshly ground black pepper • Salt • Fresh basil
and a good sprinkle of salt and black pepper (3-4 turns in a pepper mill) in a large bowl and whip together with an electric mixer until fluffy. Add parmesan cheese and stir in with mixer on low until well blended.
2. S ift the flour into the bowl ½ cup at a time and incorporate it thoroughly. The mixture will form a sticky, but pliable dough. Don’t overmix. Overmixing causes the dough to be chewy.
3. Bring a large pot of water to boil. Salt it when it boils.
4. O n a floured surface, divide the dough into fist sized pieces and roll into a ½ inch thick rope. Cut into even bitesized pieces and place on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper.
5. Once all the dough is rolled and cut, gently place the gnocchi into the boiling water.
6. W hen the gnocchi rise to the surface
Share with us! We would love to hear from you! Do you have a delicious dish or drink you think everyone should try? We’re looking for easy and creative recipes to feature in our upcoming issues. For a chance to be published in one of our magazines, please submit your recipe to marketing@jayspaziano.com.
(typically around 2-3 minutes), remove and strain.
7. S erve it with your favorite sauce, top with fresh basil, and enjoy!

Go Ahead, Give it a Shot! The “Reader’s Digest” of COVID-19 Vaccine Information for Bucks County Residents 22
J AY S PA Z I A N O R E A L E S TAT E
WHILE WE LIKE TO KEEP OUR ARTICLES USEFUL BUT ON THE LIGHT AND FUN SIDE, we couldn’t find
a hotter topic than “where to get a COVID-19 vaccine” for our Hot Topic section of the magazine. By no means are we providing medical advice. We simply heard from many of our clients, friends and relatives how difficult the entire process has been. Our goal is to simply provide all the helpful information we could gather and put it in one place for you. We understand how overwhelming and confusing it is to navigate the maze of information to pre-register for a COVID vaccine. Vaccine allocations to our area are determined on a weekly basis by the Pennsylvania Department of Health. As everyone knows, those allocations are falling way short of the demand. To assist you through the process, we compiled information available here in Bucks County and put it in “Reader’s Digest” format to try to make it easy to understand and navigate.
We understand how overwhelming and confusing it is to navigate the maze of information to pre-register for a COVID vaccine. Doylestown Hospital If you are a patient with a Doylestown Health primary care provider or specialist, you will be contacted as the vaccine becomes available to you. They are in the process of contacting their patients who are the sickest and at the highest risk of contracting COVID-19 to meet the most immediate demand for vaccine. Even if you are a patient here, you can register at any one of the sites mentioned below. According to the Bucks County Corona Virus Vaccine Hotline, people are welcome to pre-register with more than one provider.
https://www.doylestownhealth.org/about/news/health-newsand-blog/information-on-coronavirus-covid-19
St. Mary Medical Center St. Mary’s is currently accepting registration forms and, when available, the vaccine is currently being distributed to individuals in Phase 1A. You can find the registration form here: https://www.trinityhealthma.org/find-a-location/st-marymedical-center/covid-vaccine
Jefferson Health – Bucks County Jefferson Health is starting a phased roll out of the COVID19 vaccine for its most vulnerable patients. According to their website: “Due to the limited vaccines that are available, we are distributing this vaccine in the most equitable way and in accordance with Department of Health and CDC guidelines.” If you are a patient of Jefferson Health, a notification to register for the vaccine will be sent through their patient portal or you will receive an email. At the current time, they are not pre-registering patients. https://www.jeffersonhealth.org/coronavirus-covid-19/covidvaccination.html
St. Luke’s Hospital – Upper Bucks and Quakertown According to St. Luke’s website, they will let their patients know when the COVID-19 vaccine is available to them. For this to occur, you need to have a MyChart account (electronic medical record) established to access vaccine scheduling. If you do not already have a MyChart account, you must register for one. When it’s your turn, you will be notified when it’s time to schedule your vaccine. https://www.slhn.org/covid-19/protect-yourself/covid-19-vaccine

FAQs If you were lucky enough to get the Pfizer-BioNTech or Moderna vaccine and still are waiting to receive your second dose, can you switch vaccines?
No. Experts agree that the COVID-19 vaccines are not interchangeable between the first and second doses. As with everything about this virus, more research is needed to study the safety and effectiveness of mixed doses. Source: health.clevelandclinic.org/do-you-have-to-getthe-same-covid-19-vaccine-or-can-you-mix-shots/
Are 2 doses really necessary?
Yes. Two doses of the Pfizer-BioNTech and Moderna COVID-19 vaccines are necessary to be fully protected. During testing, a relatively weak immune reaction was found within a few weeks after people received the first dose of vaccine. After receiving a second dose, a strong reaction was found. Source: https://jamanetwork.com/journals/jama/ fullarticle/2776229?utm_source=twitter&utm_ campaign=content-shareicons&utm_ content=article_engagement&utm_ medium=social&utm_term=020721#. YCAnhQwAbXl.twitter After I receive my vaccine, how long until I am protected?
After you get both doses of the Pfizer or Moderna COVID-19 vaccine, it takes about two weeks for your body to build up protection. Source: https://www.mayoclinic.org/diseases-conditions/coronavirus/expert-answers/visits-after-covid-19-vaccination/faq-20506463
If I’ve already had COVID-19, do I still need the vaccine?
Yes. Experts do not yet know how long someone is protected from contracting the virus again after recovering from COVID-19. Source: https://www.cdc.gov/coronavirus/2019-ncov/vaccines/faq.html#hadcovid While your risk of getting the COVID19 virus after being vaccinated is low, it is still possible. Right now there has not been enough research done to see if the vaccine alone can stop transmission. We know it stops the severity of symptoms if you contract the virus. So, even after you are vaccinated you will still need to practice social distancing, wear a mask properly outside your home, wash your hands frequently, and follow your state and local recommendations until the spread has stopped. According to the experts, getting the COVID-19 vaccine, any one of them, as soon as it’s made available to you is how we can move beyond this virus and out of this pandemic. Share the Harvest SHARING – THAT’S ONE OF THE CORE CONCEPTS BEHIND COMMUNITY SUPPORTED AGRICULTURE (CSA). So, what exactly is CSA and how does it work? Mem-
bers purchase a seasonal portion of the farm’s harvest before the growing season. They share the risks (bad weather or crop disease) and the benefits with the farmer. In return, members receive freshly picked, locally grown produce throughout the season. The farmer receives your support and payment prior to the season which allows the farmer to purchase supplies and labor and focus on growing the crops, not sales and distribution. Most members find the cost to be less expensive than comparable grocery store prices. Early CSA sign ups also allow the farmer more time to focus on his crops. It truly is a winwin for both. As an extra bonus, purchasing a CSA helps stimulate the local economy. With more and more of us cooking at home and looking for healthy options, joining a CSA may be the right fit for your household. Most CSAs run from mid Spring to late Fall and offer different share sizes to fit your household’s needs. What you receive in your share depends on which CSA you join. Some 28

offer fruit and vegetables, and others just vegetables. All of your garden favorites are typically included, plus unique items that you would not normally pick up during your usual grocery store trip. This is part of the CSA experience! How can I use this unidentified green leafy item in my meal or smoothie? Don’t worry, they will not go to waste! Many CSAs will post or include recipes showcasing the ingredients in their box. Pickup is weekly depending on what size share is purchased. Sometimes, herbs, flowers or fresh baked goodies from the farm make their way into your box. Some include an occasional jam or jelly. It’s similar to receiving a surprise package every week. Also, there is something about eating fresh, local produce – it tastes so much better and lasts so much longer. Some CSAs offer additional items like eggs, honey, or dairy products that can be added on. The option to perform some minimal farm work in exchange for a discounted membership is offered by some CSAs as well. This could be a great family experience to get some time outdoors. If you decide to join a CSA, here are some tips: know that what you get each week might be a surprise – and that’s part

of the fun! However, some CSAs now offer a “pick your own” model so you can pick what you will get each week. Make some room in the refrigerator and get the blender out. Joining a CSA is not only a monetary commitment, it’s a commitment to cook and use the produce. If you are not sure that your household can use all the produce in one week, consider splitting the share with a friend or neighbor. Become adventurous in the kitchen! If you received an abundance of tender, young greens, just mix them into a salad. Did an overwhelming amount of kale or any other type of tough greens make it in to your box? Just trim tough stems and sauté with olive oil and garlic until tender. Add to pasta, a stir fry or use as a side dish. Kale is usually plentiful in a CSA box, so try making kale chips or kale pesto. Lots of root vegetables? Peel and roast with olive oil and your favorite spices, add to soups or mix in with mashed potatoes. There are tons of recipes online with clever meal ideas using CSA produce. Not surprising, most folks find that they eat more vegetables after joining a CSA. If cooking is not your ‘thing’, put together creative salads or make smoothies. Leafy green sal-
ads match well with pears and apples. Try adding fresh, raw spinach to a smoothie -- it’s almost tasteless and adds a major nutritional punch (and yes, it will turn your smoothie green). Work your way up to adding kale. Cucumber and carrots (as long as you have a powerful blender) are great vegetable options to add to a smoothie too. CSA models differ from farm to farm. Sign up is usually done by late Spring. If you do decide to join, you will receive a season’s worth of some of the best produce you’ll ever taste and all the benefits that go along with supporting your local farmers.
