Depending on when the United States Bulk Mail department decides to send out this magazine, Father’s Day may have already passed us by. If this is the case, I still want to make note of all the great dads out there and wish them a truly Happy Father’s Day! Speaking of great fathers, Jay is awesome. For those of you who don’t know, he’s a girl dad! He raised my sister and me by himself and so we clearly have a special bond. Girl dads tend to be more nurturing and good listeners, at least this was my experience. Anyone who can handle a teenage daughter (or 2 or 4) with grace should win an award in my opinion. I don’t want to forget the dog parents out there! In this issue we decided to give our readers a sneak peek into our dog family here at Jay Spaziano Real Estate. That’s right, we love dogs!! Sometimes it’s All About the Small Things

WE GET IT – the past year has changed the way we do practically everything. Now that restrictions have loosened up a bit and gatherings are ok, we have to re-think entertaining. After we put together our hot chocolate charcuterie board, we fell in love with the charcuterie concept, which is why when we saw the jarcuterie trend, we had to let our readers know about it. And, yes, it’s exactly what it sounds like: single-serving charcuterie boards packed into a cute little jar or container. How fun is that? For now, the communal cheese board and chip and dip bowl are things of the past, and this is such a fun alternative. It helps minimize touching and controls portion size – unless you’re like us here in the office, in which case you’re helping yourself to a second or third jar anyway! Most jars are filled with your typical appetizer foods – meats, cheeses and fruits and vegetables. You can also prepare dessert jarcuteries filled with chocolates, bite sized brownies or pieces of cake. Or just simple snack ones with popcorn, chips and pretzels. Typically, small 4 or 8 ounce mason jars are used. Tip: you can also re-use glass yogurt jars. For entertaining with kids or outdoors,

use clear plastic cups. The key to making jarcuterie successful is having it filled with food that is neat and easy to eat with your hands. Fold meats onto cocktail sticks (toothpicks are too short), and use kabob sticks or plastic cocktail skewers for cheese, olives, fruit and veggies. Add some flatbread crackers and a breadstick or a pretzel stick. Smaller crackers can be layered in the bottom of the jar. When assembling the jars, start at the bottom and work your way up. Use nuts or grapes as a filler. Add taller items like flatbreads in the back and smaller items in the front at varying heights. Finish with a fresh herb garnish. The jars can be decorated with a ribbon or label for that Insta-worthy photo! If you would like to serve a dip like hummus, ranch, or guacamole, spoon that into the bottom of the jar and top with a mix of bell pepper strips, carrot sticks, celery sticks and flatbread crackers. You can skewer cherry tomatoes onto a kabob stick. For a cheese spread, spoon that into the bottom and serve with veggies and pretzel sticks.

Changing your dog’s surroundings is crucial for his mental and physical well-being. Without enough variety, dogs get bored, and boredom leads to laziness, and laziness leads to weight gain and, well, you know – the list can go on and on. Too much inside time and not enough outside time not only affects dogs physically, but it may also lead to destructive behavior. Getting outside with your pup stimulates his senses. Depending on the breed, a dog’s sense of smell is anywhere from 10,000 - 100,000 times better than ours! Dogs have up to 300 million olfactory receptors in their noses compared to about 6 million in ours. The part of their brain that analyzes and processes scents is (proportionally) 40 times greater than ours. With a nose that smells at least 10,000 times better than humans, can you imagine how interesting it is for him to be outside? Being outside and sniffing satisfies his sensory needs. The combined smells, sights and sounds from being outside help him stay active and alert. Depending on the needs and size of your dog, a daily 30 minute walk in good weather is sufficient outdoor time. Walking with your dog has a lot of benefits for both you and your dog! It strengthens your bond and improves mental and physical health. It also helps to lower stress levels and improves socialization skills. If you do not have time for a walk every day, let him stay outdoors for a bit – of course, supervised and in a safe location. Visiting a local dog park may be a fun outlet for your dog.
