Dear Readers, I hope this finds you well. As we are winding down with summer by closing our pools, heading back to school and reorganizing our closets so the sweaters are at the forefront, I wanted to take this opportunity to present what I think it means to be a good neighbor and member of our community. I think this is crucial because I recognize that we have all been dealing with tremendous stressors in our world, and I’m worried. My fear comes from the fact that when we experience stress we sometimes cannot temper our responses to others. There is seemingly a lack of filters and thoughtful consideration given, and although I see this happening all around, I want to remain focused on the positive and shine the light on those that have been taking our daily stressors and transforming negativity into something beneficial for the lives of others. I recently took my 5 year old to the happiest place on earth and no, not McDonald’s: Disney World of course! It was refreshing to see this bubble of bubbliness, smiles on everyone’s face and for a snapshot in time, seemingly not a care in the world. This got me thinking about how it would be in our daily lives if we put on smiles instead of frowns. If we waited patiently at red lights instead of honking because the person in front didn’t step on the gas in the nanosecond the light turned green. As I’m pondering this our extra energetic guide, Dave, shared a story with me that brought us both to tears. He was telling me that recently a man caught wind of a 5 year old girl with terminal cancer not being able to fulfill her Make-a-Wish dream of going to Disney because of financial issues and the pandemic. Keep in mind this man did not know this little girl or her family. It is also important to note that he was not a wealthy individual in terms of money but certainly in heart. This man started a fundraising campaign and raised enough for the little girl’s wish to be granted! She and her family were able to spend time in this fantasy world, laughing, smiling and for a moment in time she was able to experience the magic and forget the pain. I am so touched with this man’s act of kindness and I want to praise and recognize him, although in true hero style he prefers to stay anonymous. He is a hero to this girl and her family. He is a good neighbor and member of the community. Let’s be more like him. Please help me inspire others by sharing any heroes that you know. Someone who is selfless and has acted kindly. I want to recognize these people and will share your stories, as I think it’s so important that we focus on the positive. Hope you enjoy.

The Pennington School 04

W

WHEN I THINK OF FAMILY, I think of the people in my life who have made the most positive impressions and this is why everyone related to The Pennington School will always hold a place near and dear to my heart. For me, starting in tenth grade, it was a haven of warmth, positivity, and growth. Believe it or not, I used to be an introvert. In fact, before I found The Pennington School, the only time I would come out of my shell was when I was on the soccer field or track. Athletics was the outlet that I desperately needed and the track coach at the public school I attended told my father, “She will never make the varsity team.” Thankfully, my dad realized that I needed a more nurturing and enriching experience and so he worked tirelessly (as he still does) so he could send me to The Pennington School. My life as an insecure, timid, and less-than-confident teenager was changed forever. Pennington provided a completely different culture than the public school; Pennington was challenging but fun, competitive but friendly. As a high school student, I felt that the most noticeable social aspect was that it was okay to be friends with everyone. I didn’t have to choose a group. I had classmates from all over the world. We were treated with respect and like adults. “Are you sure I can leave campus for lunch? I don’t need to tell anybody or check in?” Amazing. All of the School’s administration actively supported me in EVERYTHING I did. I assumed they would cheer me on in the classroom but I was shocked to see these familiar faces on the sidelines at my games, long after school hours, with words of encouragement. I would pass teachers in the hallway who would take the time

to ask about last night’s competition. What? It was then that I knew The Pennington School would always be my home away from home and that I was surrounded by people who genuinely cared about me. I went from an environment of skeptics to an entire school of believers. Not surprisingly, this constant positive reinforcement gave me more and more confidence. I worked harder and harder both in the classroom and on the fields. I trained and trained and the accolades started rolling in; in fact, I was a 3x NCAA All-American sprinter in college. I credit this achievement to The Pennington School because

Pennington provided a completely different culture than the public school; Pennington was challenging but fun, competitive but friendly. it was there that teachers and coaches first saw my potential and gave me the confidence that allowed me to grow. Pennington offered the bridge for me to transition from being the “quiet kid” in class to the person I am today and I couldn’t be more thankful. I never fully realized how valuable my academic experience was at Pennington until college. I knew it was called a “prep” school but I was more than prepared; college work seemed

easy in comparison. Writing a paper was never more challenging (or fun) than in AP English with Mr. Burns, and I carried my confidence from Pennington into all my course work including in graduate school. There was never a doubt that I, the once-timid teenager, could make a place for myself in college and for the rest of my life. I revisited Pennington’s campus last month and it was amazing to see how the school has evolved but still has the same warm and welcoming feel. From academics to extracurricular activities, Pennington promotes confidence, academic excellence, and personal growth in its students by encouraging them to take part in a wide range of experiences. I was in awe of how much Pennington has advanced in its extracurriculars since I attended. There is truly something for everyone, 06

J AY S PA Z I A N O R E A L E S TAT E

including the robotics club, learning difference alliance, and exchange of many cultures club. For the sports lovers, both the boys’ and girls’ soccer teams are nationally ranked programs. There is also an Inspire Performance Academy with amazing coaches who provide strength and conditioning training to all varsity athletes. The academia is still a top priority, with a combined total of 38 advanced placement and honors courses. And for the STEM enthusiasts out there, Pennington has an Applied Science Certificate Program which promotes creative thinking through various STEM courses and clubs. There is also a special Global Studies Certificate Program that teaches students how to become informed, active, and ethical participants in global ideas, issues, and communities, both at home and abroad. Pennington continuously strives for diversity and inclusion in all its activities, making it the perfect environment for young students looking to find activities they enjoy. The faculty works with their students in and out of the classroom to encourage self-growth without changing their personalities. As a parent myself, I am more and more conscious of the importance of a well-rounded and nurturing school environment for my daughter and that is why I’m forever grateful for my time at The Pennington School and all the ways it demonstrates the true meaning of “family.” Welcome home, indeed! ●

Fall Harvest Time

Pick your Own Pumpkins, Apples and More!

I

IT’S FALL AND YOU KNOW WHAT THAT MEANS – apple and pumpkin picking! There is something so satisfying about picking fresh apples and then making a homemade apple pie. And, with Halloween right around the corner, pumpkin carving is a classic family activity everyone can enjoy. We are so lucky to live in beautiful Bucks County where there are plenty of farms to choose from for these fun fall trips. It’s a great way to spend time outdoors when the weather is getting cooler and it’s so refreshing from the summer heat.

Wondering where to go apple or pumpkin picking? Here are a few local farms where you can enjoy fresh picking along with some fall fun activities.

08

None Such Farm offers pumpkin picking, and every weekend in October they have a fall festival offering tractor hayrides, pony rides, a straw bale maze, a corn stalk tunnel, live music and food.

Hellerick’s Family Farm offers fresh picking from late September through November. They have over 55 varieties of pumpkins, squash and gourds in all shapes and sizes. Several different outdoor adventure activities are also offered at the farm.

Their apple picking season begins in mid-August and lasts through early November. Their market houses a vast selection of other seasonal items.

Solly Farm 707 Almshouse Road Warminster, PA 18974 215-357-2850 | www.sollyfarm.com Solly Farm offers apples, pears and pumpkin picking, along with fall fun events that run from late September through the entire month of October. Their market offers additional fruits and vegetables along with a large selection of baked goods.

Styer Orchard 97 Styers Lane Langhorne, PA 19047 215-702-9633 | www.styerorchard.com Styer Orchard offers a variety of pumpkins and apples from late September through October along with a variety of prepicked fruits and vegetables in their stand area. Hayrides to the field are available at no cost.

When planning your visit to any farm for fresh fruit picking, we recommend checking the farm’s website or Facebook page to see if reservations are required, their picking hours and what events may be occurring. Keep in mind, weather plays a huge role in determining when fruit is ready to be picked, so checking before you head out can ensure that you have the ripest fruit available. Enjoy! ● J AY S PA Z I A N O . C O M

Fall into Color at Bowman’s Tower

A

AH, FALL. BREATHS OF FRESH AIR. Cool, crisp nights.

Sweater weather. Pumpkin-spiced everything. Against the bright blue sky the leaves are bursting in fall colors . . .crimson, amber, vibrant yellow . . . it’s time to get outside and enjoy nature’s spectacular seasonal show.

20

J AY S PA Z I A N O R E A L E S TAT E

Did you know that Pennsylvania has one of the longest and most varied fall foliage seasons in the world? Pennsylvania’s geography and climate create the unique fall foliage the area is known for having. Pennsylvania’s latitude marks the meeting spot of northern hardwood species and southern hardwood species. While both hardwood species’ leaves peek at different times, in Pennsylvania, for the most part, these times overlap creating a vivid and varied season that lasts 6-7 weeks on average. Very appropriately, the name Pennsylvania literally means “Penn’s Woods”. This year, fall officially begins on September 21st. Depending on the weather, Pennsylvania’s fall foliage lasts through October or early November. According to the Farmer’s Almanac for this year, prime leaf peeping in Pennsylvania is October 5th through the 21st. So, put on a sweater, grab a pumpkin spiced latte and go head out for some fresh air and enjoy one of the best and most popular views in Bucks County from Bowman’s Hill Tower. Bucks County boasts many scenic spots, but the view from Bowman’s Tower must be experienced to be appreciated. Even the ride on River Road to the tower is scenic! But, once atop the tower – 125 feet in the air – you can gaze above the trees and view the surrounding countryside seeing as far as 14 miles on a clear day. It’s easy to see why Bowman’s Tower is a favorite stop for locals and visitors. As part of Washington Crossing Park, the tower is located near the corner of Route 32 and Lurgan Road. You can visit the tower on its own or as part of a combination ticket should you wish to visit other attractions in the park. A little history . . . it’s a tower, right? Revolutionary soldiers must have

used it as a look out . . . wrong! It didn’t exist during George Washington’s day! Construction started in 1929 and lasted for 2 years. It is built from local field stone to commemorate what may have been a lookout point for Washington and his troops to keep an eye on any enemy activity along the Delaware River. Most historians consider the use of Bowman’s Hill for a lookout to be more lore than documented fact. To build the tower, more than 2,400 tons of materials were used, including native stone from the hill and nearby stone fences, cut stone from local quarries, 517 tons of sand and 225 tons of cement. Workers excavated 15 feet deep so that the 24–foot-squared base would rest on a bedrock foundation. Soon after the tower’s construction, workers planted nearly 30,000 seedlings in the area. Their plan was to recreate the landscape as they thought it would have looked like during Washington’s time. Some of those seedlings have become today’s towering trees on Bowman’s Hill. Now those trees are part of the landscape creating the rainbow of beautiful fall colors. An elevator was installed to get to the top of the tower, but you still must climb the last 23 steps to reach the outside observation deck. Before the elevator installation, a spiral staircase was the only way to reach the top – now you can pick. Before heading out, be sure to check www.washingtoncrossingpark.org for ticket information, hours, elevator operation status and any possible Covid restrictions that may be in place. Renovations were taking place over the summer and are scheduled to be completed by October. ●

In 1979, a young man lost his father and inherited 10 head of cattle and a 100 acre chestnut tree farm near Seoul, Korea. He would soon grow that number to 100 head of cattle and use the sale of that livestock to fund his family’s American dream; and so the farmer from Korea would trade his rural earth for immigrant life in the city. Forty years later, his daughter would ask him if he would consider buying a horse farm with her. And after much toil and searching, Dreamweaver Equine Center came into fruition whose goal was to foster not only her clients’ beautiful dreams but also return that immigrant family back to its rural roots where earth was healing and animals their confidantes because home isn’t always a place but where one finds joy and confidence.
