Jay Spaziano Real Estate & Lifestyle Magazine Dear Readers, Thank goodness for Spring!! It felt like an exceptionally cold and dark Winter so I am more grateful than ever for the weather to take a pleasant turn. We all know that sunshine can be such a mental health benefit but did you know that 75% of emotions that we generate on a daily basis are affected by smell? Not surprising that Yankee Candle is aware of this and just announced their signature scent for 2022 called Inspire. Described as “happy, bright and uplifting” this scent is based on the Japanese philosophy of Ikigai – which are guiding principles of happiness including “Smile, surround yourself with good friends, take it slow…” We can certainly all use a little inspiration from time to time. A lot of folks may not realize this but my father and I both studied and worked in the field of psychology in our previous lives. We still do a lot of listening, guiding and problem solving each and every day which makes working with people so rewarding. It’s like playing a real-life game of Tetris with much higher stakes, having all of the pieces fall in line is critical. Anyway, go outside, relax on a lounge chair with this magazine, get inspired and we are here if you need us. Hope you enjoy!

Spring Cleaning: It’s Not Just for Houses Anymore 04
J AY S PA Z I A N O R E A L E S TAT E
M
MOST OF US LOOK AT SPRING CLEANING AS A TIME TO CLEAN ALL THOSE AREAS WE NORMALLY OVERLOOK DURING THE YEAR.
Now with the average American household having at least 10 Internet connected devices, spring cleaning is no longer limited to the dust bunnies under the bed or reducing clutter. A good spring cleaning extends to your digital life and devices, ensuring that your personal information is safe and secure yearround. Holding on to old accounts and files that you do not use anymore exposes you to all sorts of risks. The goal of a good digital spring cleaning is to scale down what you have out there so that if your data is ever compromised, your privacy and identity is not.
Passwords Take a moment to review passwords. Password changes are often neglected. We know – we have enough to worry about on a daily basis without adding password security, right? If you haven’t changed your password in a year, you may want to consider doing so. Most sites require passwords to be eight characters (more if you can, as longer passwords are harder for criminals to guess or break), a combination of upper and lower case letters, numbers and keyboard symbols such as @ # $ % ^ & * ( ) _ +. Consider using a “pass-phrase” rather than just a word. If two-factor authentication is available, use it. If you feel comfortable, use a password manager which allows you to manage and change multiple passwords in a single click.
Email Review all email accounts and delete any unwanted mail. Now is a good time to organize and create backups if needed. Delete any old email accounts that you no longer use.
Social Media Review all accounts and make sure your privacy settings are up to date. Remove any old accounts/profiles that you no longer use. After you delete or remove a profile and you no longer use the app, delete it.
A good spring cleaning extends to your digital life and devices. Smart Phones and Tablets Update your security code, if applicable. Make sure the device locks automatically when not in use. Apply all the latest software patches for your device’s operating system and all the apps you plan to keep. Haven’t opened Candy Crush in 2 years? Delete it. Log out of any apps and then delete any apps you no longer use. Review the privacy settings for apps that you give “permission” to. Ensure that backups are being performed and that “find my device” software is enabled. Most device location software allows you to lock or erase all the data on your device, in case you think someone stole it.
Web Browsers Web browsers store lots of information to make your life easier. Auto-fill is helpful, but take a few minutes to check your browser’s settings, clear out old data, and ensure your browser’s security settings are up to date and keeping you safe. Make sure that autofill doesn’t contain sensitive information and J AY S PA Z I A N O . C O M

that you don’t store your passwords in your browser. Review and remove any extensions that you no longer use.
For most, purging clutter of any kind is satisfying.

Home Network Make sure your virus protection software is up to date on any computer equipment. Create backups and test the restore process. Make sure all your devices like gaming consoles, digital assistants, and smart TVs have the latest software updates. Check to see if your router’s firmware is up to date and the firewall is active and security settings are current. Lastly – and this involves a little muscle – smartphones, laptops and tablets are used on a daily basis
in most households, so it’s a good idea to sanitize them on a regular basis to help keep the germs away and get rid of the crumbs that fell into the crevices of your keyboard. For your screens, use a micro-fiber cleaning cloth with a little water and wipe in one direction. For your keyboard, use a can of compressed air to blow away any dust and debris that fell between keys. You can also purchase a cleaning kit from your local office supply or computer store. For most, purging clutter of any kind is satisfying. It allows us to feel less stressed and more focused. This feeling certainly can extend to a less cluttered screen of phone apps. While these are just suggestions to get started, anyone who is technologically challenged should seek professional advice. ●

Plant-wise, Go Native!
I
IF YOU’VE EVER WONDERED WHAT A TRULY NATURAL LANDSCAPE LOOKS LIKE, head to Bowman’s
Hill Wildflower Preserve. Located south of New Hope, the preserve’s 134 acres feature more than 700 of Pennsylvania’s 2,000 native plant species—wildflowers, grasses, ferns, shrubs and trees, even prickly pear cactus!—growing naturally together throughout the grounds. The nation’s only accredited botanical museum dedicated to native plants features 5 miles of trails, which take visitors through a diverse mix of plant communities and ecological habitats—woods, meadows, ponds, wetlands and a deep creek valley. Any time of the year, it is a beautiful, peaceful walk. Since its founding 88 years ago, the preserve has also been disseminating native plants throughout the Delaware Valley region. From April through October, the preserve’s Native Plant Nursery offers the opportunity to purchase plants found throughout the preserve to enhance your own landscapes. Some of the 175 perennials for sale are even grown from seed at the nursery. Rather than planting more annual flowers this spring, here are a few reasons to consider some native plants instead.

Swamp rose-mallow (Hibiscus moscheutos)
They provide better food and shelter for the many beneficial insects, birds, amphibians, reptiles, mammals and other life forms that should be found here. Over millions of years, these plants and animals have evolved to coexist together and thrive in our local soil and weather conditions. For example, according to Doug Tallamy, author and entomology professor at the University of Delaware, oak trees in the Mid-Atlantic support more than 550 different caterpillar species—which become both critical food for scores of bird species and gorgeous butterflies and moths. Yet, he adds, while non-native, invasive butterfly bushes sold throughout the region attract many egg-laying butterflies, the bushes feed only one species of butterfly caterpillars—in southern California. Caterpillars born on these shrubs here are doomed. Benefits of Native Plants: •A ttract pollinators for our landscapes and agricultural plants • P rovide food and shelter for wildlife •G row easily once established, and often require less water and maintenance •D on’t have to be replanted each year • E liminate the need for toxic fertilizers and pesticides •C ombat invasive, non-native plants from gaining a foothold • P rovide beauty, delight and a “sense of place.” J AY S PA Z I A N O . Bowman’s Hill Wildflower Preserve also offers guided walks and educational programs for both children and adults. Indeed, many native plants, such as the Preserve’s spectacular display of Virginia bluebells in April, are strikingly beautiful. The spring blooming season begins with such plants as Jack-in-the-pulpit, wild geranium and wild columbine. Summer brings a series of showstoppers, both in terms of their beauty and the wildlife they attract, including milkweeds (monarch butterflies), cardinal-flower (ruby-throated hummingbirds) and coneflowers (American goldfinches). The blooming season extends well into the fall with long-blooming aster and goldenrod species (July through November). Deep into the winter, various shrubs and trees display interesting color and bark patterns, while winterberry and chokeberry shrubs, and holly and dogwood trees, are bright with bird-sustaining fruit. Want to start planting native? Visit the preserve’s nursery, which opens the weekend of April 9. Knowledgeable staff and volunteers will gladly help you choose the best plants for your property, whatever your growing conditions. Deer problem? They will point you towards deer-resistant options, ranging from such wildflowers as bee balm, cardinal-flower, goldenrods, milkweeds and wild mints to ferns, viburnum shrubs and cedars. Bowman’s Hill Wildflower Preserve also offers guided walks and educational programs for both children and adults—some live, some virtual—to enhance your experience. To find out more about native plants; the Preserve’s nursery and educational programs; and how to become a member to enjoy free admission, go to www.bhwp.org or call 215-862-2924. ● 24

THE BUCKS COUNTY SPCA is an independent nonprofit animal welfare
agency serving all of Bucks County from our full-service shelters in Lahaska and Quakertown. Founded in 1912, our mission is to assist animals in need and prevent suffering through rescue, rehoming, cruelty investigation and prosecution, and community outreach. In 2022, we are celebrating the 10-year anniversary of our shelter in Quakertown and 110 years of lifesaving county-wide. Our shelters are open admission, meaning we accept any Bucks County animal in need, no matter their age, breed, or condition. Animals can remain in our care as long as needed to find them a home. We have a robust foster volunteer program that cares for more than 700 kittens and other young animals annually. Our veterinary team performs thousands of exams and surgeries each year. We work hard to save every life possible and are proud of our 94% save rate. We’re the only agency providing 24/7 emergency rescue of injured stray pets across the county. We also shelter lost pets and farm animals brought to us by the police, animal control, and the public. Many animals are reunited with their families thanks to microchips or tracking through our lost and found database. When no owner steps forward, we care for the animal until a new home can be found. In addition to animal sheltering, we help struggling pet owners. Last year we donated nearly 14,000 pounds of pet food to 5 local food pantries so that families didn’t have to choose between feeding themselves and feeding their companions. Our surrender prevention program assisted 60 pets in 51 households through in-kind donations or small financial grants to help cover needed medical procedures. We launched a free behavior helpline in 2020 to provide professional guidance for owners of all kinds of pets. In 2021, we began offering virtual and in-person dog training. Our humane law enforcement officers investigate hundreds of complaints of suspected animal cruelty each year. In 2021, their investigations resulted in

the rescue of 194 animals suffering from cruelty and neglect. Many of these animals required extensive medical treatment and recovery time until they were well enough for adoption. We’re working hard to address Bucks County’s over population of outdoor cats. We provide subsidized cat spay/neuter for Bucks County residents to help prevent future unwanted litters of kittens, and we support individual and community Trap-Neuter-Return efforts. (Call our clinic at 215-622-0003 to schedule an appointment.) All of these important services are made possible by the generosity of our community. We are not associated with and do not receive funding from the ASPCA or other state or national organizations, nor do we receive tax funding. When you support the Bucks County SPCA, you help save lives right here in your community. You can make a difference in the lives of animals in many ways: donate, volunteer, foster, host a donation drive, adopt! Visit us online or at the shelter to learn more: buckscountyspca.org. ●

Available Pet: Tate
Tate (affectionally know as Tater) is a loveable 5-year-old Bulldog mix weighing about 80 pounds. He is a goofy, people-loving dog who loves to play and responds very well to training. Tate will need to be the only pet in your household. Because of his size and activity level, he will do best in a home with people who are steady on their feet and without young children. Tate has been at the Bucks County SPCA for over a year. Because BCSPCA is a no-time-limit shelter, Tate is in no danger and can stay with us as long as needed to find a good fit for him. In the meantime, Tate enjoys walks through our fields, chasing after tennis balls, and even car rides. He’s a good buddy who exhibits the kind of joy of living in the moment. Have you got room in your home and heart for this big guy? To learn more about Tate, please call 215-794-7425 or email behavior@buckscountyspca.org. J AY S PA Z I A N O . C O M
