Jay Spaziano Real Estate & Lifestyle Magazine Dear Readers, I hope you are enjoying the summer! It's my favorite season for a lot of reasons but primarily, I enjoy seeing the transformation of outdoor spaces and how they come to life. A door that was once locked for the majority of the year is now providing frequent access to a magical, relaxation spot. In this issue, I want to showcase some lovely outdoor spaces that have something for everyone. Also, just a bit of insight on how I ended up on this career path. My first job in real estate was after grad school in South Florida. I was working for a large franchise handling the marketing initiatives for over 200 agents. It was this experience that made me pause and decide to stop fighting the field that I grew up in. I realized that wherever I grew my client base would be difficult to leave so I moved back to the northeast to plant familiar roots and be near family that I missed while I was away. I want to be clear about something: Jay does not believe in nepotism. When I told him about my plans for real estate, he wished me well and asked where I would be working. Although initially a bit shocking, I’m actually incredibly grateful that he didn’t just bring me on because I learned to stand on my own. I built my own client base, learned the Philly condo market inside and out, won numerous sales awards and most importantly, gained a greater confidence in myself and my ability in the industry. 16 years formally and 43 years through osmosis and counting! Hope you enjoy!

Chilly Treats to Beat the Heat
I
IF YOU’RE LOOKING FOR A WAY TO COOL OFF THIS SUMMER,
how about some ice cream? There’s nothing better than a delicious, chilly treat to beat the heat. Check out one of our local favorites the Zebra-Striped Whale! The Zebra-Striped WhaleTM (ZSW) Ice Cream & Coffee Cafe (est. 2004) is a family-owned and operated cafe dedicated to providing premium ice cream, coffee, espresso drinks, tea, crepes and desserts. ZSW specializes in hand-mixing an array of toppings into its delicious ice cream known as WhirlwindsTM. Custom ice cream cakes and gourmet chocolate pretzel trays are highly recommended! Fun fact: Did you know that the unique name comes from the original children’s picture book, The Zebra-Striped Whale with the Polka-Dot Tail? The book was written and illustrated by ZSW’s founder - years before the cafe opened. Visit the cafe, check out the book, and eat some ice cream! ●

TheTwist of Lyme
I
I WANT TO PREFACE THIS WRITING WITH I AM NOT A DOCTOR. . . I simply want to share my experience in hopes
that it can offer some much-needed hope and guidance to anyone who may be going through a similar experience. In 2017, I started to have what I would call weird, constantly changing symptoms that individually didn’t look like much to worry about. I certainly wasn’t debilitated but for instance, one month I would have bouts of extreme fatigue, then the next month I would get strange headaches, and then the month after that I would have muscle weakness or joint pain. After about 8 months or so, I noticed that I was beginning to experience a lot of neurological issues such as brain fog and finally, I decided that I needed answers. About a year prior to these symptoms, I recall going to my primary doctor because I had a strange bite on my abdomen that swelled up like a golf ball and said to her in our meeting, “I want to make sure that I don’t have Lyme disease.” Guess I should have listened to my intuition. At the time I was told that it looked like a spider bite, not to worry, and was sent on my merry way. I trusted my doctor, she was smart, genuine and went to all the big-name medical schools. It wasn’t until 7 months later when I was both physically and mentally exhausted and thinking that my health was on a decline that I realized she was wrong. I saw specialist after specialist. . . a rheumatologist told me I needed to “eat more protein,” a neurologist I waited to see for 3 months had me walk in a straight line and said, “You look fine to me.” After many, many blood tests, imaging, etc., I had no answers. Everything supposedly looked good, yet I felt like I was deteriorating from the inside out. This is when I decided that I needed to take my health into my own hands and the real research began. I went back to my primary doctor and asked, “Did you ever test me for
Lyme?” I was curious because the bloodwork was exhaustive and I was just given the ‘all looks good, you’re low in Vitamin D summary.’ The answer was surprising, “We only test for Lyme when we deem it necessary.” WHAT!?! I’m not going to lie, this answer infuriated me. That is when I dropped my primary doctor and looked into as many options as I could. I was discouraged, angry, tired and sick. After many hours of spiraling on the Internet, I happened upon a blog on Lyme disease. This is where I found Dr. Eskow, an infectious disease doctor in Flemington, NJ. He was credited with saving this woman who suffered from a chronic illness that left her unable to walk up a flight of stairs. I called his office immediately. Long story short, within a week of my visit I was diagnosed with chronic neurological Lyme disease. I went on an intensive three month round of antibiotics and had a long road ahead of me to get my health back. I read as many books and articles I could find on Lyme and immune system functioning. I forced myself to exercise and went on a liquid diet to detox. It was brutal but worth it. My symptoms started in September 2017 and I received a diagnosis in May 2019. Despite the many roadblocks I encountered along the way, I am truly grateful for finding Dr. Eskow when I did. He was the opposite of every medical professional I encountered up until that point. He asked so many questions, listened to my answers, set honest expectations, followed up and to this day is available if I need him. I am offering this to not only discuss the mystery that surrounds Lyme disease and the difficulty in getting a diagnosis, but also to encourage anyone who feels like they are hitting roadblocks with their health to keep going. The more conversations you have with people the more likely you are to ultimately find an answer. Sometimes, just getting an answer can provide so much relief. ● J AY S PA Z I A N O . C O M

Visitors to the fair can stop by the livestock barns throughout the week to meet the animals and their owners. Fostering Happy Tails
D
DID YOU KNOW that rabbits are the third
most popular pet in the United States? They are also the third most abandoned, especially in the months following Easter. Luv-N-Bunns, a rabbit rescue based out of the Philadelphia area, is working tirelessly to change that. Since its founding in 2007, Luv-N-Bunns has saved over 2,300 bunnies and placed them into wonderful forever homes. These rabbits come from a variety of circumstances – overcrowded shelters, hoarding and neglect situations, abandonment by the side of the road, in parking lots, and other public areas – but they all share one wish: to feel safe, secure, and most of all, loved. Luv-N-Bunns volunteers devote immeasurable time, effort, and energy into granting that wish. Operating through a network of foster homes and a new adoption center, the non-profit coordinates the rescue, medical care, and adoption of nearly 200 rabbits per year. In addition to saving as many bunnies as possible, Luv-N-Bunns hosts and participates in outreach opportunities both in person and online in an attempt to educate people about proper rabbit care.
24
J AY S PA Z I A N O R E A L E S TAT E
There is a common misconception that a rabbit is an easy or “starter” pet, but the reality is much different. Domestic bunnies belong inside a home – and indoor house rabbits can live for more than ten years. A hutch or cage is not enough space. Bunnies require daily exercise (they are experts at running, jumping, and binkying – their version of a “hoppy dance”), a specific diet, specialized vet care, and, of course, interaction with the family. This means a great deal of commitment for 10+ years – and also a great deal of unconditional love and joy. Animal rescue is an emotional undertaking, but it is, above all else, a heart-warming experience, a reminder that sometimes we all just need a paw to hold onto. The Luv-NBunns community believes in changing the world, one rabbit at a time, and is dedicated to reducing the ever-growing population of unwanted, abandoned, and neglected bunnies. Their goal is to always speak up for those who have no voice. Interested in getting involved? Luv-NBunns is always looking for foster families. The number of bunnies in need is overwhelming – this year’s requests for help have already surpassed 250. Dedicated foster families allow the rescue to save as many rabbits as possible. If you’d like more information about fostering, are interested in seeing more of the rabbits waiting for their forever homes, or want to fill out an adoption application (all adoptions are done via private appointment to approved applicants only), please visit: http://www. luvnbunns.org or contact the intake and adoption team at bunnies@luvnbunns.org. You can also hop over to the rescue’s social media pages (@Luv-N-Bunns on Facebook and @luvnbunns on Instagram) to see featured adoptables, hoppily-ever-afters, and more! ●
Available Pet: Marley
Available Pet: Thumper
Hi there! My name is Marley. I’m a young bunn gal, just over a year old, and I’m one of the original furry residents at LNB’s adoption center. Every week since January, I’ve watched my friends hop off to new homes, with so many adventures awaiting them. I’m super excited for them! The volunteers tell me soon it will be my turn, and I hope they’re right. It sure would be nice to have a family of my very own. I’m an energetic little girl, and I think this means I’d be great entertainment for you! I think it’s really fun to toss my toys and salad bowl around, and I’m quite talented at it, if I do say so myself. And I am coming out of my shell and beginning to blossom! I was pretty shy when I first arrived at the adoption center, but I’m learning to enjoy head rubs now. The LNB humans say they are so proud of me! I’d love to make YOU proud of me, too. If you’d like our budding hoppy-ever-after to burst into bloom soon, please email bunnies@luvnbunns.org. My paws are crossed!
Well, hi! My name is Thumper, and I am pleased to meet you. You see, I'm on the search for a forever home, and I'm hoping you can help me out with that. I'm a young bunny girl - and if I'm being honest, life got off to a really rocky start when I was abandoned outside. I know, right? Can you believe it? Thankfully, a compassionate soul found me and helped me to safety. Now I'm part of the LNB network! Next up on my list: getting a human of my very own - one who will love me, and take care of me, and never just leave me alone to fend for myself. That's pretty hard for a domestic rabbit, you know. Also, quite scary. Sometimes I still think about those days, but mostly, I spend my time dreaming of what a hoppy future would look like. Maybe you could turn my dream into a reality? It would make me the happiest bunn around! If you'd like to be forever friends, please email bunnies@luvnbunns.org for an adoption application. My paws are crossed!
