Summer time is a time when Kids get to be Kids and so do Moms! What were your favorite Summer time memories? I loved visiting the caverns that seemed so magical in Texas, having my own Lemonade stand, and playing in our own backyard water park of sprinklers with my three brothers! It is so fun to share these experiences now with my kids. In this issue of 35 Central Kids local moms shared their favorite places to visit in Texas and things to do with their kids. We tried to give our Moms some great information and inspiration for making Summer time memories with their families. Wishing you Summer time fun! Thank you for your support of 35 Central kids! Warmest regards, Lynda Pohl 35 Central Kids Publisher Please send your pictures, ideas, stories, recipes and crafts to lynda@35central.com. Summer Trauma Season By Susan Burchfield Safe Kids Mid-Texas Coalition Coordinator and Scott & White Trauma Center Injury Prevention Coordinator

While summer is a favorite time for most children with time being spent swimming, bike riding, playing sports and having relaxing fun, it is also known as “trauma season” in the injury prevention community. This summer, children ages 14 and under will be rushed to emergency rooms nearly 3 million times for serious injuries resulting from motor vehicle crashes, drownings, bike crashes, pedestrian incidents, falls and other hazards. And, sadly, by the end of this summer, more than 2,000 children will die because of injuries that could have been prevented. Parents and caregivers should keep these tips in mind so safety stays a top priority this summer:

• Actively supervise your child when engaging in summertime activities, such as swimming and playing on playgrounds and backyards. • Use the appropriate safety gear for your child’s activities, such as a helmet for wheeled sports and sporting activities, a car seat or booster seat as appropriate, and a life jacket for open water swimming and boating. • Role model proper safety behavior. Children are more likely to follow safety rules when they see their parents doing so. • Never leave children alone in vehicles. Lock parked cars to prevent children from playing inside. • Walk all the way around a parked vehicle to check for children before entering a car and starting the motor. • If you have a pool or a spa, it should be surrounded on all four sides by a fence at least four feet high with self-closing, self-latching gates, and it should be equipped with an anti-entrapment drain cover and safety vacuum release system. An inflatable pool needs to be surrounded by a fence, just like any other pool, and parents need to empty these pools when not in use. • Keep children away from the grill area while preheating and cooking, and while the grill is cooling. • Remove potential poisons from your yard, including poisonous plants, pesticides and pool chemicals. • Apply sunscreen rated SPF 15 or higher to your child’s exposed skin 15 to 30 minutes before going out, and reapply frequently. • Make sure your child drinks plenty of water. A child who seems tired or achy should rest in the shade or go inside for a while.

6

Active supervision, proper protective gear, and other simple prevention steps will help your child avoid danger. If you would like more information, please contact Safe Kids Mid-Texas 254 724-1431 or sburchfield@swmail.sw.org. Safe Kids Mid-Texas is: A local coalition serving the counties of Central Texas Member of global network in 16 countries. Formed in 2009 under the leadership of the Scott & White Trauma Center Injury Prevention program Our goal - prevent childhood injury, a leading killer of children 14 and under We believe there are actions that we as a coalition can take to raise awareness, prevent injury and death, and intervene on the behalf of our kids.

Summer Fun Ideas

When you work at home or are a stay at home parent you need practical affordable ideas for kids’ entertainment, things for kids to do by themselves, particularly summer activities. Try out a few of these ideas for kids and parents to do together and grow closer this summer together.

Spa Day at Home

Fun With Food • Pick or grow your own….whatever fruit or veggies you like. • Make your own pizza or ice cream. • Let the kids cook dinner. In fact, make a tradition of it. • Plan with your kids and host the kids’ friends for a sleepover or summer party with crafts and snacks they choose.

• Experiment with new hairdos. • Make your own lip gloss from Kool aid and Vaseline. • Soak feet in bubble tub. • Paint nails and toes

Family Room Fun • Camp in. Put the sleeping bags on the floor and have a family slumber party. • Invite friends over for a game night. Have a kids’ games table and an adult one. • Break out the family movies. • Show the kids science is fun with simple experiments. • Build a Lego castle. • Scavenger Hunt throughout the house and yard.

Art Spaces • Play with clay. Then bake your creations to make them permanent. • Make paper airplanes. See whose goes the farthest. • Press summer flowers. Make a pressed flower picture. • String beads. Try safety pin bead designs • Collect paper, pipe cleaners, buttons, recycled boxes, glue, pom poms, google eyes, tissue, markers, paint brushes, and safety scissors in a large craft box or shelf in the kitchen. Each week have kids create their own art!

The Great Backyard

Family Field Trips • Pack a picnic. Eat it just about anywhere • Go to the lake and Dig in the sand at the beach, fish, and swim. • Go to a matinee • Go to the drive-in • Learn about animals and habitats then Photo by Asher Creek Photography visit the Zoo. • See a dramatic performance together. Doesn’t matter if it’s a puppet show in the park or local theatre. • Go hear live Music at the park or local hot spots. Encourage kids to make their own music and even instruments!

• Cook out….frequently. Go beyond the burgers. Try veggies or fish. • Make ‘smores. • Camp out • Stargaze • Plant a butterfly garden. Watch the butterflies flutter by. • Create Your Own Backyard Water park with slip in slides, sprinklers • Decorate your walkways with chalk. Better yet, make your own chalk. • Take a hike or bike ride. • Build a fort. Try pillows in the living room or cardboard boxes in the yard.

Entrepreneurship • Get organized and make a little summer spending money by having a garage sale. Crafts made or vegetables grown can be sold at the event as well! • Lemonade stands are a great way to teach kids about business. Make a plan, cost, supplies loan, market, sell , and see what a profit is! 7

Momprenuers Attention Mompreneurs! We want to do an article about your experience having your own business and raising a family! The good, the bad, the why. Send to lynda@35central.com include a photo if you would like.

Krysta Reed Photography

It took me awhile to find out what “wanted”” to do with my life. I have always had a passion for dance, photography, volunteering, event planning, design, finances, and business. So I went to college for several different degrees and decided on a BBA in Human Resource Management a little mix of everything in business. My last two years of schooling I had a lovely toddler to chase around while running off an average of 4 hours of sleep a day so its completely doable, tough, but doable. After graduation I knew that I want to still savor those sweet moments of childhood with my daughter so I decided to mix my degree in business and love of photography and start my own photography business Krysta Reed Photography. Just like in college I spend many sleepless nights working on creating a business because I still have to be a mom first during the day. My husband is in the Army in the Horse Calvary Detachment and travels to do demos and parades quite often so I really don’t catch a break. My typical day consists of taking care of a toddler, maintaining a house, managing a business, and still being a wife. This means a crazy day can consist of breakfast, housework, taxes, diaper changes, demos/parades, lunch, grocery shopping photo session, dinner, then editing for a few hours. Whew did that make you tired that can be a typical Thursday for me! Creating my own business gives me the flexibility of creating my own schedule. This is great because when you start a business you still have to create a balance between family and business. I am truly grateful for all the family, friends, and awesome babysitters that have helped along this crazy fun adventure! I hope to grow in my business and eventually have my own studio!
