Summer is the season for preppy weddings on the lake and country club receptions. Preppy weddings are elegant, classic and bold. Preppy can be composed of sophisticated patterns and sleek lines with with pops of color and crisp white throughout. The ceremony and reception will have a clean feel, nothing too busy. Bold but simple patterns are a great way to complete the look; patterns like chevron, stripes and plaid go exceptionally well with the theme. Nautical elements such as stripes, rope and anchors also bring in the theme. Branding is a must and monograms make the perfect preppy statement and can be added to everything from the dance floor lighting to cakes to cocktail napkins. Fitting with the country club flair, some brides choose to showcase theirs and their future hubby’s hobbies such as tennis and golf with styled photo shoots and fun favors further personalizing the event. Preppy weddings are timelessly stylish with bits of tradition and trendiness pulled together into a vibrant, fun event to be remembered for generations to come.

The Proposal Callee Harvey and Mitchell Buckner met in high school; he’s older than she is and she always had a crush on him but didn’t think he knew she existed. Apparently he did. Years later on November 30, 2012, Mitchell proposed in her kitchen at home. He got down on one knee and asked her to marry him; it was very casual and sweet, just like them. They wanted their wedding to be very small, only family and close friends, and to have a very intimate feeling—romantic and sexy with the beach, sand and sunset. Cozumel is Callee and Mitchell’s favorite place in the world and Mr. Sanchos is their favorite place in Cozumel. They go at LEAST once a year, so Callee knew exactly where she wanted to get married.

The Wedding The date was set for Tuesday, June 11, 2013—Callee’s parents’ 28th wedding anniversary. That week the couple and seventeen of their closest friends and family flew to Mexico for the event. Along with them was Callee’s photographer, Marcel Van Es, First Sight Photography, and his wife Beth. Callee’s bridal gowns, all family attire and the tuxes came from Georgio’s Bridal in Waco. On the day of the wedding, Marcel took Callee to a few fabulous locations for her portrait session in her first gown. After the formal photos, she quickly changed into her beach wedding gown while they waited for the guests to arrive. Callee’s matron of honor, Amanda, looked amazing walking down the sandy aisle in her ivory high-low dress followed by Callee’s nieces and nephews. The oldest carried the love of their life and their only child, Olivia. Callee walked down the aisle to Mazzy Star “Fade It to You,” the perfect song for her perfect beachside wedding ceremony.
The Reception The decor can be described as beachy: Most was created by the bride’s sister Lacy who planned everything for the destination wedding. She hand picked the seashells and starfish that lined the aisle and made an “itinerary” for everyone like a personalized scrapbook with a collage of the couple on the front. Tie The Knot of Waco provided many little details that made it simple and easy to make personal decorations that were easy to bring with them. Callee chose all white Mexican florals native to the island. The food was Mexican, of course, and was absolutely amazing. They served Halibut with a mango salsa and spinach stuffed chicken breast in addition to fajitas, rice, beans, ceviche and guacamole. During dinner a Mexican trio band played and the new Mr. and Mrs. Mitchell Buckner shared their first dance to Sade “By Your Side.” What they loved most about their wedding was that they had the most important people in the world with them in the most beautiful place in the world.

The Proposal On August 19, 2011, Tamara’s best friend, Amberly, who is married to Michael’s cousin, Scott Savage set Tamara and Michael up on a blind date. For Tamara it was a surprise blind date. She had thought she was meeting just Amberly and Scott for dinner, but when she arrived at the restaurant she saw Michael and was told he was in town for the day and wanted to come to dinner with them. Little did Tamara know, it was all part of the plan and from there on out the couple was together. Tamara moved to Houston in January of 2012 and was looking for a job. On March 30, after she found a really good job, Michael told her he wanted to take her to Brenner’s Steakhouse to celebrate. Michael proposed to Tamara on a waterfall bridge at Brenner’s while their close friends took pictures from the patio.

The Wedding Tamara Jean Rainwater and Kenneth Michael Kruppa were married at Cathedral Oaks in Belton on April 20, 2013, joined by 230 of their closest friends and family. After touring multiple venues, Tamara became emotional walking under the breathtaking trees at Cathedral Oaks and knew it was where she wanted to get married. The day of their ceremony could not have been more beautiful and the ceremony was anchored with a wrought iron arbor with branches, cherry blossoms and white hydrangeas across the top. Beautiful large pink rose balls hung on shepherd’s hooks lining the aisle which was designed in pink rose petals in the shape of hearts. Tamara carried a bouquet of classic pink roses wrapped with lace & Swarovski crystals from her dress and pinned with her great-grandmother’s pearl broach. Dr. Mark Bumpus had a wonderful message as he lead them through their vows and the Unity Cross Ceremony; Dr. Bumpus was very special to the bride and groom because he married the bride’s parents and her aunt and uncle.
The Reception The reception was nothing short of wonderful with tables draped in teal satin with chocolate napkins and arrangements of pink and purple florals displayed in wrought iron centerpieces with candles picked by Tamara and her mother. A four foot chocolate fountain greeted guests at cocktail hour in addition to a full bar. Burgundy beef tips, garlic mashed potatoes, corn casserole, rice and rolls was the perfect dinner. Tamara’s cake was an ivory four-tiered cake with white scroll work and different patterns on each level; the groom’s cake was a replica of the Aggie Barn in Reagan, Texas and it had the groom’s and bride’s years they graduated from A&M. Not long after meeting, Michael introduced Tamara to his friend Jose Salazar, leader of the Broke 60 Band. Michael told Tamara he wanted him to play at his wedding someday. After listening to them Tamara knew they would be perfect! And they were: The dance floor was full the whole night and everyone loved the music. At the end of the evening, Michael drove his new bride away in a cloud of bubbles in a 1957 red and white Chevrolet. The wedding was perfect and Tamara’s favorite part was getting to marry her best friend and share the day with all their family and friends.

Luxurious Linens
Upon walking into a grand reception guests are met with colors, lighting, flowers and decor, quite a bit to take in. Once seated in place, they come face to face with linens. Luxurious linens, hopefully leaving them in awe of the material, texture and patterns that go into making your wedding unique. Standard linens come in polyester but there are many material upgrades available. Options include satin, silk, burlap, lace, taffeta, velvet and bengaline. If cost is your concern, stick with the standard polyester and layer on the charm with runners or overlays and upgraded napkins to stay within budget. Texture is the difference between ordinary and extraordinary. For a glam event, brides can choose sequins, petals or shimmery rosettes. Burlap and lace are pretty for a shabby chic wedding while pintuck is the perfect choice for a more formal affair or perhaps a smooth satin or bengaline silk. The best way to work with textures is in layers to create a visually pleasing effect. Some brides go for a monochromatic color scheme, washing a room in a single color such as blue or pink; for weddings washed in lighting, texture takes precedence. Colors in washed rooms may be distorted or muted because of the light and texture is needed to make an impact.
Colors and patterns are endless. Anything you can imagine is an option. Once your color palette is in place, you must select linens. Ideally contrast is created with flowers that pop on linens and bridesmaid dresses that stand out against the table cloths adding dimension to the space. For example, if your color scheme is coral and navy, navy linens may be best with coral florals and bridesmaid dresses. While neutral linens can be beautiful especially for eco-themed events, beware of selecting colors that blend with the wall (the space may look flat) or your dress (because you are the bride and are supposed to stand out!). Hot for summer and trending for all wedding themes from preppy to shabby chic are patterns. Chevron or damask, stripes or swirls, choosing a pattern is the ultimate way to set your wedding apart.

Hot summer weddings call for refreshing cocktails and cool hors d’oeuvres, especially for out of town guests not yet accustomed to the Texas heat. Creativity is key to “WOW” guests getting ready to enter the reception; cocktails can be custom created to fit with your wedding theme and colors and hors d’oeuvres should be delicious and beautifully presented as well.
Scallop ‘BLT’
6 Servings 2 Each U10 Sea Scallops 1 Piece Bacon, Cooked Julienne 2 Slices of Sourdough Bread Toasted, Crust trimmed Cut into 3 Pieces 2 Grape Tomatoes, Sliced into 3 Pieces 2 Tablespoons of Mayo 1 Head Frisse Lettuce Washed and Torn Directions:
Grilled Shrimp and Pineapple Skewer with ‘Cilantro Pesto’
6 Servings 6 Bamboo Skewers 6 Each 13/15 Count Shrimp 6 Pieces of Pineapple Chunks cut in 1/2” cubes Directions:
1. Soak bamboo skewers in warm water for 10 minutes.

The Proposal Courtney Celeste Sherrod met Richard Lee Lewis while working for a close friend. From the day Richard first caught a glimpse of her, he could not wait to see her again. And on their first date in October 2011, he already knew she was the girl he wanted to marry. A year later, he planned the perfect proposal for Christmas Day. Courtney and Richard were hosting Christmas dinner for their parents. It would be the first time their parents would officially meet each other. Unbeknownst to Courtney, Richard pre-arranged for her father to bring the engagement ring as a “mystery” gift and drop it at an opportune moment. When confronted with her name on the gift, she opened it and inside, she was astonished to find a sparkling princess cut diamond ring.

June 1
The Wedding The wedding was set for June 1, 2013, and would incorporate some of Courtney’s favorite elements including lush pink florals, trendy moss and succulents, bling and the short Maggie Sottero gown she selected for the occasion. Together they selected a pretty spot on Belton Lake with a large oak tree and a covered space perfect for the party they were planning. On this natural back drop, the wedding was designed with lighting, chandeliers, round tables and garden chairs transforming the space into a one-of-a-kind wedding venue. When the day arrived, guests gathered and Richard waited as Courtney made her way down the aisle carrying a bouquet of pink peonies, dahlias and roses finished with black satin and a sparkling brooch to be given away by her father. The heartfelt ceremony was conducted by Dr. Nick Farley, the principal at the school where Courtney is a teacher.
The Reception After the ceremony, guests were led to the reception space and in true party fashion enjoyed cocktail hour with wine and kegs courtesy of the Point Liquor Stores, Richard’s family business. Dinner was catered by Craig’s Meat Market (Craig is a close friend of the couple) and included brisket, chicken, baked potatoes and salad. Courtney’s wedding cake sat atop a bed of moss with succulents and was topped with pink peonies, roses and dahlias. As favors, each guest received a potted succulent to take home. On this night, Richard married the woman of his dreams under bright lights along side the lake surrounded by their beloved friends and family. After hours of dancing and drinking, the celebration came to a close and the couple exited through rows of bright sparklers—the perfect ending to a hot pink party on the lake and the perfect beginning to their never ending love story.

Belle Ball 2013
March 2
The Wildflower Guild of the Central Texas Orchestral Society presented the Twenty-Second Annual Wildflower Ball on March 2, 2013. The Wildflower Guild was organized to support the Central Texas Orchestral Society, as a member group of the Cultural Activities Center, The Wildflower Guild Programs include Junior Cotillion of Temple and Belton and the Wildflower Belle Program. These programs educate middle and high school students in social graces, dancing skills, concert etiquette and appreciation for the Arts. The young ladies who continue into the Junior Belle Program also participate in CTOS events and community service projects. These activities prepare them for the Wildflower Belle Ball, the culminating event of the Guild’s Junior Belle Program. Proceeds from the Ball fund the Marty Lundgren Master Class and other concert series performances. The Belle Program helps the young ladies develop skills that are beneficial for success in college, career and life.
Ball Committee The 2012-2013 Wildflower Ball Chair was Jill Lock, Assistant Ball Chair Lynda Pohl, Assistant Ball Co Chair Annie Wainwright. The team began during the summer of 2012 planning for the Ball. Sponsorship opportunities and save the dates were designed to ensure the event’s success. New exciting changes were made from the 2012-2013 Ball Committee beginning with the addition of fresh floral centerpieces. Supporters were given an opportunity to purchase floral arrangements in honor of a Belle or special vperson. Wedding shows, Pinterest and magazines helped inspire the Ball’s look while staying true to the event’s history. The Committee enjoyed meeting with leading Central Texas vendors which presented over-thetop quality in design, floral, food and decor during the bidding process. The Ball The blank black room of the Mayborn Convention Center in March was transformed by volunteers and vendors into an Enchanted Garden Ball filled with live plants and flowers, orchestral music, a sparkling fountain and a grand entrance. Award winning cheeses and appetizers were served during the cocktail hour as the quintet played. The decor was lovely, but nothing could compare to the beautiful Belles presented during the evening with their fathers and escorts. The plated organic meal served was a work of art on the plate and a masterpiece to the guests’ tastebuds. An evening filled with waltzes and line dancing was enjoyed by all. It was a very special night that made memories that will last a lifetime for Belles and guests.

The Proposal Catherine Victoria Gates and Jack Waldon Chandler II met in the summer of 2008 at Wildflower Country Club. Jack had just graduated from UMHB and Catherine was working at the club in the gazebo out near the pool. She would tend to the golfers at the gazebo while away from school at Texas A&M University and one windy day, Jack came by for a hot dog which ended up blowing away. He just had to come back for another and from that fateful day on, he always went back to visit her at the gazebo. Jack kept insisting on giving Catherine his phone number instead of his member number and the rest is history. One cold winter day, Jack nervously took her to his lucky hole on the Wildflower course, #5, in the cold with lots of blankets right at sunset and popped the question—and she said YES!

> The Wedding Catherine had always envisioned a Catholic ceremony and selected Christ of King Catholic Church in Belton to say her vows. She loved that the ceremony included close family and traditional elements of her heritage such as the Bible, the arras, the lasso and the flowers for the Virgin. Catherine walked down the aisle escorted by her father, William “Bill” Gates carrying a bouquet of orchids, roses, calla lilies, spider mums and hypericum berries in a dress of luxurious lace. Wildflower is home to both Catherine and Jack and they had shared so many milestones there, it seemed like the perfect place to celebrate after the ceremony with their closest friends and family.
> The Reception On June 29, 2013, they were joined by 110 of their friends and family gathered at Wildflower in a space beautifully decorated with love birds, woodsy branches and moss, truly bringing the outdoors in. Appetizers were served during cocktail hour followed by an absolutely delicious meal consisting of salads, steak and shrimp, purple fingerling potatoes (to match the decor) and green beans with warm rolls. After dinner, Catherine and Jack cut into a decadent cake topped with love birds customized with the flowers Catherine used in her hair and a gray mini golf cap for Jack. Guests also enjoyed homemade cannolis by her uncle’s restaurant, Reale’s Italian Cafe, and Mexican cookies created by Catherine’s aunt. Rockin’ Rick played so many special dances and Italian sing-a-longs that incorporated Catherine’s Hispanic-Italian heritage and kept the guests dancing well into the night. A love story started off with one golfer and one tennis player and ended perfectly with Catherine and Jack riding off onto the course through a sea of bubbles in a “Just Married” golf cart.

The Wedding Look
On your wedding day, go for a timeless look that you will be happy with in photos for years to come. Beauty experts at Skin Deep Spa in Harker Heights suggest planning up to a year ahead for color and cut on hair and the type of look you want for make-up. Romantic styles are trending for summer weddings with low buns, loose curls, flower crowns and natural looking make-up with a hint of shimmer. Another major influence is the Roaring ‘20s, as seen in the popular movie The Great Gatsby, a look that is perfected with feathers and pearls. Brides are also using flowers that add color to their look (as opposed to white) and tie in with their bouquet. You need to have at least one trial with your make-up artist and hairdresser before your big day in addition to professional hair and make-up for bridal portraits. If budget allows, airbrush make-up is the way to go. Airbrushing enhances natural beauty and has amazing staying power to last through even the warmest of wedding days. Trust salon stylists to keep your hair in place throughout the celebration with professional products such as setting lotion (heavy duty gel), Redken Hotsets (heat styling spray) and Redken Control Addict Heavy Duty Hair Spray. The means for acquiring the perfect summer glow are up for debate: Sun bathing (or baking in tanning beds) may cause skin cancer, tan lines or a sunburn. Spray tans on the other hand can be streaked, orangey, stain your dress and may smell unpleasant. Whichever method you choose should be tested and complete at three to five days before your event. Vitamins such as Biotin are helpful for growing healthy nails (and hair) if you prefer natural or acrylic and solar nails give another option for perfectly pictured finger tips. Manicures and pedicures are a MUST for any bride and a a perfect way to begin the festivities with female family members and the bridal party.

Wildflower Country Club hosted our latest bridal social highlighting different popular wedding themes: Vintage, Elegant, Modern and Classic.

The vintage display designed by VIVID Events showcased burlap linen, lush florals in heirloom silver (also by VIVID Events), mason jars, a rustic lounge area and a dessert display with beautiful cakes created by Lily’s Cakes. For the elegant look, wedding planner Judy King created a stunning table scape with a fabulous floral arrangement by Precious Memories tying in silvers and purple with draping and bling to give the ultimate glam look. For both the modern and classic looks, Lynda Pohl designed the spaces: The modern look had bright pops of black and yellow with cool lounge furniture, bright florals courtesy of Bloomingfields and a fun cake from Salado Vintage Cakery. The classic themed table featured the prettiest pink linen with gold chairs and gilded place settings with grand pink florals by Precious Memories and the sweetest cake also from Salado Vintage Cakery.
To-die-for wedding gowns graced the space all courtesy of Georgio’s Bridal and Creta from KiKi’s Creations was on site with beautiful jewelry and diamonds galore. Hors d’oeuvres and bright cocktails created by Wildflower for brides-to-be were absolutely amazing and Jammin’ Jacks DJ was on the patio providing exciting entertainment. Runaway Bride June 22 was a warm Saturday morning fwith excitement in the air as Brides, Bridesmaids, friends and families all gathered at Carl Levin Park for the first annual Running of the Brides presented by the Bride Guide and Heritage Park Fitness. Heritage Park Fitness was the final destination for all runners and walkers. Crowds cheered as contestants crossed the finish line wearing their finest in wedding and formal wear! Dodge Country greeted runners and walkers with the latest Dodge Dart and Dodge Country waters and koozies. Champagne mimosas flowed from the Bride Guide tent along with beautiful gowns from Georgio’s Bridal & Prom, cake display by Lilly’s Cakes, fresh flowers by Vivid Events and hot summer photography by Lonestar Pinup. The crowd danced with the zumba class from Heritage Park Fitness and registered for Bridal Bootcamps. Skin Deep Spa demonstrated the latest in spa technology. DJ Emanon kept the party going all morning until it ended with a bridal bouquet toss for the grand prize. A special thank you to Kristen Dunlap the Wellness Coordinator at Heritage Park Fitness for being a fabulous hostess and working to make the first event a huge success! It was a great way to launch Bridal Bootcamp! Bridal Bootcamp is not just for Brides but is available through Heritage Park Fitness in Harker Heights for people with special events coming up to lose weight and tone, so they look amazing on their special day.

Blissful Budgeting
Have you ever wondered what other couples are spending on their weddings? According to CNN Money-Fortune Magazine, in 2012 the average wedding cost in the United States was $28,427 and an average of 160 guests with spending at it’s highest in larger cities and and more frugal in rural areas. In seeing that number, you are thinking one of three things: 1) Perfect—that is exactly where we are on budget, 2) Great—I will have no problem with money as my budget is well over $28k or 3) Wow (but not a good “Wow”)—we are having a wedding on a budget.
Regardless of your budget, there are some basic guidelines to follow to be sure you don’t go over budget and can still have a gorgeous wedding with professional vendors. Most importantly, start with the budget: Before booking a venue or photographer or buying a dress, sit down with your hubby-to-be and both sets of parents and discuss the finances. Begin by consulting with a wedding planner or coordinator to get an accurate idea on what the local market prices are. Many brides make the mistake of going out and booking a venue without determining their overall budget and then do not have enough money left for the other elements that go into making a wedding amazing. You can break down your wedding budget by percentage to see how much of the budget should go into each element. Discuss what is most important whether it be an expensive venue, gourmet cuisine, a rockin’ band, a couture gown or a high-end photographer. Percentages will change based on your individual priorities but we have included a basic budget break down based on a $20,000 wedding for 150 guests which can be modified for your budget and guest count. Certain costs are per person (food, beverages, rentals, favors, invites, florals) and others will remain constant (venue, licenses, photography, entertainment) even if you cut the guest list.

Top Eight Tips to Save (& Manage) Money 1. Start With The Budget-When you begin with a budget and factor everything in, you can then prioritize and be sure there is enough money for everything that is important to you. 2. Hire A Planner-She will likely save you more money than you spend to hire her and things will be more smooth and less stressful on your special day. A planner is your representation and advocate throughout your planning process for all vendor negotiations and every wedding detail. 3. Do Not Buy Too Much-Just because you have 150 guests, you do not need 150 slices of cake, 150 invites or even 150 favors. Only buy what you need. But make sure you have enough, because ordering extra at a later date will surely cost more. 4. Remember Taxes & Gratuity-Texas sales tax is 0.0825% and must be applied to just about everything. Tips are a must for caterers, bartenders, beauticians, valet, entertainers, etc. 5. Avoid Extensive DIY-Most times you will spend more money at Hobby Lobby than you would have hiring a professional; the outcome and stress are not worth the pennies you might save. 6. Minimize Bar Tabs-Offer beer and wine or maybe a signature drink at your open bar to cut costs instead of offering a full top shelf bar. 7. Beware of Hidden Costs-Cleaning fees, damage waivers, kitchen fees and hourly overage charges are all examples of extra fees that must be planned for when creating the budget. 8. Try Something Different-Try something different like a Sunday wedding or a winter wedding. Many venues and professionals give off season, non-Saturday discounts.
