Kale B&B marks 20 years of hosting in Everson Landmark: ‘It’s more than a place to sleep’ By Elisa Claassen for the Lynden Tribune

EVERSON — “It’s more than a place to sleep” is an apt description of Kale House Bed and Breakfast.    Twenty years ago, it was a matter of finding a niche that wasn’t being filled “and we had the interest and skills to do it,” said Cori Litorja, about starting the small — and distinct — local accommodation for guests.    Cori is one half of the ownership team, along with her mother, Bonnie Litorja. Their place at 201 Kale St. is celebrating its 20th year in operation this Saturday, July 11, with a community garden party on-site from noon to 5 p.m.    “Having been in business for 20 years, we’ve had the pleasure of seeing people return year after year,” Cori said. “We get to catch up on each other’s lives over tableside chats.” See Kale House on C4

Kale House: Litorjas' original art adorns house walls Continued from C3    Kale House, built in 1920, was named after the street it is on, and in turn the family that used to live elsewhere on the street. After serving initially as home to the Litorjas, the place was turned into a bed and breakfast and carried the sense of home flavored with, as Cori calls it, “a cosmopolitan-country décor.”    Color-filled spaces follow a warm palette from the paint on the walls to books filling the shelves alongside reading nooks, quilts and hand-made accessories.    The Litorjas’ original art — Bonnie is a prolific quilter using primarily bright fabrics and Cori paints and puts together bold assemblage art — line the walls of the home and are part of the property’s small gift shop and gallery space, along with the work of other local artists.    Although many guests find Kale House through word-of-mouth referrals of friends and family or through a B&B website, the Litorjas do belong to the Everson-Nooksack and Lynden chambers of commerce and Bellingham Whatcom County Tourism. They do see repeat business.    “Some guests are coming to the area for a special event or outdoor adventure while others return year after year to visit friends and family,” Cori said. “We’ve hosted visitors from coast to coast and as far away as Japan, Israel, Austria, Germany, England and the Netherlands.”    In addition to the B&B’s rooms, Kale House’s gardens have been toured by local garden clubs and won a Whatcom in Bloom award in 2011.    “Guests love the nostalgia of discovering the swing under the weeping willow or a favorite childhood book on our library shelves,” Cori said. “Guests enjoy curling up on the window seat with a book and their morning coffee where they can also watch birds feasting at the feeder.”

Sidewalk planned along SR 544 near Everson school Construction of a complex 7/10th mile could take a while, however By Elisa Claassen for the Lynden Tribune

EVERSON — The city has put out to bid for preliminary engineering and plans, specifications and estimates to build almost seven-tenths mile of sidewalk along State Route 544 near Everson Elementary School.    Everson Public Works Supervisor Rick Holt said that the choice of the consultant should be made shortly.    “This project is seen as very important by the Everson City Council for future growth and for safety of pedestrians, especially school children who walk to and from Everson Elementary School,” Holt said by email.    The request for services includes design related to construction of a continuous sidewalk from approximately Robinson Street adjacent to the school to approximately Everson Road. Funding has been secured through the federal Transportation Alternatives Program (TAP), which will be subject to state and local guidelines.    Engineering is budgeted at $133,000, while construction may be in the “ballpark” of $1.5 million, Holt said.    The plan also delivers a direct pedestrian connection to the Bay-to-Baker Trail and Everson’s downtown area.    The sidewalk will not be built in time for the coming school year, as engineering alone for the complex project with many components will take several months, Holt said. But it is important to go forward with the south Everson project, even if it takes a few years to com-

plete, he said.    Holt said that some existing sidewalk segments may be retained. Other project components include installation of retaining walls, crossing of Scott Ditch, construction within areas of peat soils and/or wetlands, and construction within the 100-year floodplain of the Nooksack River.    Sidewalks are also included in Everson planning in two phases of Lincoln Street improvements, covered by federal Surface Transportation Program-Rural money, and Kirsch Drive improvements, funded by the State Transportation Improvement Board-Small City Arterial Program. Those projects are proposed for construction in the summer of 2016.
