The sealer was originally created in 1991 to protect large concrete structures such as bridges and piers. This product was then changed and turned into one that could be used in residences. Mold, mildew, dirt and stains from oil and food may be unavoidable on stone surfaces, but Seal Team One says its teams and products make removing those stains and restoring the look of stone surfaces easier than ever. ‘The house that works for you’ Susie Landsem brings to home show concepts of Aging in Place by Design    As inevitable as aging is, there are ways to plan well for it, Susie Landsem believes.    Or at least to plan for staying safe and happy, for as long as possible, in the space called home.    Landsem’s Bellingham-based consulting service, called Aging in Place by Design, will have a booth at the BIAWC Home & Garden Show, a first for her.    She has been involved in the design and construction industry for 16 years. Her husband Douglas runs an architectural firm that is always dealing with accessibility and safety issues in drawing up multi-family and commercial buildings.    Two things strike her as she looks at some of the requirements, however. First, the results can look institutional. Second, they may not really solve everything.    “I started Aging in Place by Design because we can do better for people who want to stay in their homes for a long time,” she says.    In the mix of things to be considered for smart aging-in-place, of course, would be level access (no stairs), openness of layout (eliminating walls and barriers), and grab bars in key places (aiding balance especially on slippery surfaces). Also, how about good lighting for fading eyes? How about the size of door frames? How about faucet handles?    “Safety is really the first part,” Landsem says, although the overall goal is “the house that can work for you.”    She will do a first home visit for free, then come back a second time with a measuring tape and start getting specific, including budget. From that, Landsem will develop several possible design elements to be considered and ranked. “The home owner is the decider,” she said.    She knows how to work with suppliers and builders to achieve a construction, or reconstruction, design goal.    Landsem has almost completed the steps to becoming a Certified Aging-in-Place Specialist with the National Association of Home Builders.    With good planning, the homeowner can stay much longer in the favored place called home and the situation can work to everyone’s advantage as well, she believes.  — Calvin Bratt

Susie Landsem is dedicated to working out long-term solutions for staying as long as possible, safely and productively, in one’s own home. She works out of the office of her architect husband, Douglas. (Courtesy photo/Aging in Place by Design)

Ecotech keeps showing how solar works 15-year-old company has been a regular at Lynden event    Dana Brandt understands that here in the famously rainy Northwest “it’s not intuitive” that solar power should work.   He’s encountered that mindset plenty over the 15 years of his Ecotech Solar company of Bellingham. He counters it by noting, for one thing, that on summer days in Washington the sun is shining more hours than in California or Florida.    The Meridian High School grad went on to study electrical engineering at Seattle Pacific, then got a master’s degree in renewable energy in Europe that involved a thesis stint in Uganda, Africa. He returned to his geographical roots in 2004, but also realized that any venture into solar here in Whatcom County would have to start small and grow slowly.    Through a few moves, the office and shop operations are now in the Haskell Business Center for the firm that employs 14.    Ecotech does solar system

design and installation, not manufacturing. For modules, Brandt relies mostly on Silfab Solar, a Canadian maker of photovoltaic cells with a presence in Bellingham.    Every project will be a customized design by Ecotech, as the sun exposure varies for every location and every building, Brandt said. “Every roof is a little different depending on pitch, orientation of the house, any trees,” he said. During a site visit, a solar access reading is taken.    Ecotech will help a property owner look at payment for a system and the electrical cost recovery that can be achieved. See Ecotech on D12

And there’s the ecological appeal of it too.   “People love to save money,” Brandt said. “And it feels good to make your own clean energy.”    The company has been a regular at the BIAWC Home & Garden Show in Lynden over the years. The event is “one of the ways that we have really gotten the word out” about the viability of solar, he said.    The discussion with an inquirer is often back to those basic questions: Does solar work here? And then, how?   Brandt has been the president of a solar installers association of Washington state, helping along the cause and promoting understanding and good laws among legislators and the general public. — Calvin Bratt

WECU, local money helping local people Not-for-profit credit union aims to ‘make dreams possible’    In 2018 WECU (formerly Whatcom Educational Credit Union) completed a re-brand. That involved a complete re-

build of the website and updating the online banking platform and internal banking system.    “Our re-brand came about because through conversations with members and the public, there wasn’t a clear understanding of ‘who’ WECU was and what we stood for,” said Keith Mader, program manager of public relations

and content. “The re-brand was meant to clarify that.    “We landed on the tagline of ‘We are all in this together.’ It is our hope that this tagline communicates the true nature of who we are. We are a cooperative, notfor-profit credit union — not a bank. As a cooperative, we don’t have owners, we have members. We make all of our

decisions with our members in mind, not shareholders. Also, we are a part of our community and we give back to our community out of mission, not obligation.”    WECU was founded in 1936 by a group of Bellingham teachers who pooled their money together after the Great Depression. From a real shoe box

A team concept drives the WECU way of operating, as all are members in the credit union cooperative. (Courtesy photo/WECU)

Home & Garden Show Preview 2019 they started to give out loans.    Today, it has grown to be open beyond educators to all in the general public who live, work or worship in the state of Washington.    The question that was asked, and answered, in the re-brand was: “How do we serve who our members are today and who they will be in the future?”    Going forward, WECU will continue to look at the bigger picture and the future. Since all members are “equal,” they have lower fees, higher savings rates and lower loan rates, Mader said.    While those coming to the BIAWC Home & Garden Show may already have a project in mind or be dreaming of future projects to improve their homes, “the message we have for them is ‘we can make those dreams possible.’ We offer home equity products with no annual fee, no pre-payment penalty, and no closing costs.”    In general, WECU pays the fees for someone who is doing a Home Equity Line of Credit or Home Equity Loan of less than $75,000. For one larger, the member pays for the appraisal and WECU pays the other fees. Restrictions may apply. — Elisa Claassen

Washington Tractor bringing small equipment a homeowner might need Popular 1025R subcompact tractors to be on hand, along with special-edition Gator Lynden’s Washington Tractor offers tractors big and small, and at the BIAWC Home & Garden Show the emphasis will be on merchandise perfect for homeowners. “We’ll have nothing over probably $20,000 there,” store manager Tom Lagreid said. “Nothing big, but they’re all good tools.” One particularly popular item on the Washington Tractor lot is the John Deere 1025R subcompact utility tractor. It touts a diesel engine, a premium operator station and easy attachments. Washington Tractor will bring a loader-and-backhoe combination 1025R to the show as well. Washington Tractor will also bring a special-edition black Gator vehicle to the show, boasting its unique paint job and special wheels and tires.

“It’s all-black and it looks like a racecar,” Lagreid said. “It’s still a John Deere and it still has the Gator logo on the side, but it’s all black and chromed out.” In addition to the Gator and the 1025R tractors, the dealership will bring Stihl chainsaws, Honda walk-behind mowers and John Deere riding lawnmowers. Lagreid said Washington Tractor’s financing options are a big draw when it comes to the equipment carried by the store. Payments are low, and there are a wide variety of timed zero-interest offers, including a 72-month term on 1025R tractors. Lagreid said the annual Home & Garden Show in Lynden is a valuable way for Washington Tractor to reach out to customers who might not think of walking into the business on any given day. “It gives us an opportunity,” he said. “It’s hard to go knock on doors down the road with people. It’s kind of nice to have everybody come to you. It’s a good marketing deal. It gets that consumer crowd that is harder to access with marketing and ads and what-not.” — Brent Lindquist

WHATCOM COUNTY H&G SHOW (Mar. 1-3, 2019) Trade show discounts and Spring Packages. BOOTH(s) 136 & 137.

Maybe some of us can’t take as many vacations as we’d like and we’re always looking for a way to make every day a little more enjoyable. When you have a Softub waiting for you at home it gives you something to look forward to every day. Whether you have back and joint pain or just need a little help relaxing, a soak in a Softub is a time-tested therapeutic escape. This is the easiest hot tub to own and operate, but more importantly it’s the softest, most comfortable hot tub to relax in.

Home & Garden Show Preview 2019

Habitat keeps up awareness of affordable housing ‘Sign a Stud’ for $1 or $5 is this year’s booth promotion    For the sixth year in a row, Habitat for Humanity in Whatcom County will be showcasing its work at the BIAWC Home and Garden Show.    The main attraction for the booth this year will be a “Sign a Stud” fundraiser. People can either sponsor or write a blessing on 2x4 studs that will be used in the construction of interior walls of upcoming Habitat for Humanity home builds. A person can sponsor an entire stud for $5 or sign a blessing on one for $1.    “That can be anything like, ‘Best wishes for you and your family,’ or any sort of good message to the homeowners who will be living in these homes,” said Hillary Pritchard, community outreach director for Habitat for Humanity. “We’ll build all these good blessings and wishes into the walls of the house.”    Habitat hopes to use its booth this year to increase everyone’s awareness about the work of the local chapter and

grow its volunteer base.    Pritchard said one thing most people forget about is the Habitat for Humanity store, located on 1825 Cornwall Ave. in Bellingham. In it, expect to find everything from new and used furniture to home décor and building supplies.    Pritchard will decorate the booth with items from the Habitat store, namely furniture, and will have a TV with a PowerPoint that shows photos of past home builds and facts about the nonprofit organization.    The aim is to continue to get the Habitat name out there and ramp up production, she says.

“There’s a lot of people who need housing and there’s a shortage of affordable housing. So we want to create more permanent affordable housing to help fill some of that gap.”    There are many ways volunteers can help out, even if they are unable to swing a hammer or install an electrical box.    “One of the things that helps us create affordable housing is we have a lot of volunteers who have been helping in the office, in the store and on the build sites.”    Volunteers will be manning the Habitat for Humanity booth and also working the main ticket entrance of the Home and Garden show.

At the home show you can sign a stud for $1 or $5 and be a part in spirit of a future home construction project. The organization will train volunteers to complete tasks correctly, she said, and anyone over 16 can come to a build site, with minimal restrictions.    “It’s that easy — hands-on connec-

Home & Garden Show Preview 2019

Taylor’s bringing array of hot tubs to show Show is a valuable way for company to connect, reconnect with past and future customers Taylor’s Backyard Center doesn’t do a lot of business in the winter, so the BIAWC Home & Garden Show is something of a kickoff to the year’s busiest time. “We kind of shake the dust off and get going,” company vice president Jesse Taylor said. “Then we’re busy from after the show until Halloween.” Taylor’s Backyard Center does a lot of construction throughout the year, but those projects are difficult to showcase in any venue that doesn’t actually feature the construction, Taylor said. So here at the Lynden show the company primarily focuses on hot tubs. “We bring in a truckload of tubs for this event,” Taylor said. The products on hand will include portable hot tubs, a swim spa and possibly a custom hot tub, though the latter depends on the weather. For Taylor’s Backyard Center, the Home & Garden Show is a valuable way to present retail products for a business that doesn’t really boast a sizable retail space. “For our business, because we don’t have a large retail store to sell product out of, and we are more a construction company than we are a retail store, it’s a really good way to put our retail products, specifically hot tubs, in front of customers,” Taylor said. Even the larger hot tub stores throughout Whatcom County don’t carry as many hot tubs on display as Taylor’s Backyard Center will have at the home show. Taylor expects 10 to 20 hot tubs for people to peruse. This makes the show a valuable way to connect — and reconnect — with customers. “It is in our hometown,” Taylor said. “We do get to talk to a lot of our previous customers because everybody in Lynden goes to the home show on one of the three days.” — Brent Lindquist
