6 Menu 7 Birthdays Thoughts on welcoming a new Director to the Center: 1) Recognize that we are all individuals with unique gifts to share. No one is good at everything, rather we all have things we do well and other areas we are not as strong. 2) No one is going to do things just the way the previous person did. (And wouldn’t it be boring if nothing ever changed?) 3) Don’t expect the new person to know everything there is to know about what makes this place tick. In a non-judgmental way, help them get to know the ropes and know who you all are also. Volunteer! Don’t wait to be asked. Let the new person know what you’d like to do!

Looking forward, looking back..... It is with sadness, but also anticipation, I am announcing my retirement from the Lynden Community Senior Center on the 14th of August, 2020. Seems like eons ago, I transferred from the college in my home town of Albuquerque, NM, and came sight-unseen to Bellingham and Western WA University for my Recreation degree. Soon after, a fellow student talked me into doing a joint internship at the Lynden Senior Center. This introduced me to working with older adults and began a great love for serving seniors throughout my career. That wasn’t the only love that started at the Lynden Center way back when. A year or so later when we graduated, that persuasive student became my husband (Steve), 41 years ago! After college and starting out in marriage, I worked for the school district with special needs children and helped my husband with a landscape contracting business we started and ran for about 10 years, before and after he became a park ranger for Whatcom county. We started a family, and when our two boys started school, I began to get back in the work force after being home with the kids since they were born. I began my official career working with seniors at the Bellingham Senior Center, as an Activity Director and moved around through various positions over the years, including Recreation & Wellness Manager, Tour Program Director and Strength Training Instructor. Then going on ten years ago, my life came full circle when I became your Director here at the Lynden Community Center! It’s been an incredible 30 year journey, made so much richer by the amazing people, past and present, that I have been privileged to serve over the years. I will miss you all!

JOB ANNOUNCEMENT: Lynden Community/Senior Center Director

Full time, salaried position. Requires extensive experience working with older adults, strong administrative skills, program and personnel management, volunteer coordination, marketing, fundraising and event planning. Send letter of interest and resume to lyndenseniorcenter@gmail.com.

What do the NW WA Fair and the Community Center have in common? Read and find out! The first fair in Lynden (circa 1909) was held right on the deeply rutted, dirt street, in the mud after a rain. Tables were placed on Front Street between Fourth and Fifth to hold most exhibits, with pigs, cattle and sheep on the side streets. After the parade, which consisted largely of animals entered in the Fair, there was a baseball game. Home plate was about where Milton (Spud) Weidkamp’s house used to be (Fourth and Grover), while the outfield was close to Janick’s Market (which is now the Lynden Community Center I believe!). In 1911 it was decided to purchase a bigger site to build a fairgrounds. Money was raised to buy 20 acres at the Fair’s present site for $1600. The land was cleared, fences, an exhibit building, cattle shed and bleachers were built in time for the first on-site fair in October 1911. Besides the cattle exhibit there were horse and pony races and a Saturday night dance was held at Pixley’s Hall. In 1920, a barnstormer from Burlington came and hit it off with 21 year old local Syl Weidkamp who came up with a daring stunt. When the plane flew over, Syl crawled out on the wing. On the next pass over the Fair Grounds, they had a straw filled dummy that went sailing off the plane when the pilot tipped his wings. Due to at least one woman fainting, the sheriff issued a warning against any further shenannigans by the daredevil pair! (Taken from the original 1983 article and illustrations by Bill Swinburnson, condensed from a history of the Northwest Washington Fair compiled and written by Mildred Hersman.) Sadly, no Fair this Year. No all county Bocce Tournament either (I guess we’ll just have to hang on to that trophy for another year!) No all-county Picnic in the Park at Hovander either. However, there is an alternative to look forward to. This year the WCOA will be doing a PICNIC WITH A PURPOSE! (see next page for more info). A FEW IMPORTANT DETAILS: Date at Lynden Center is Tuesday, August 25 1) Not absolutely required, but please sign up ahead of time (by Friday, Aug. 21 if at all possible!) so we don’t run out of food. (Delivered meals please order ahead also.) 2) Though she will be retired by then, Cathi will be volunteering, so please stop by whether you eat or not, to say good bye! Masked smiles & no hugs, but a wave and a word or two would be wonderful!
