Mission Statement
he business and purpose of the Ferndale Historical Society shall be to educate the community on the history of Whatcom County, promote Pioneer Village and tourism, and bring together those people interested in preserving history and maintaining the Pioneer Village log cabins and collections. The corporation’s major function will be to discover, collect and maintain any material, which may help to establish or illustrate the history of the area. General membership meetings are held in the Tillicum House the last Tuesday of each month (none in December) at 7pm. Come check us out.

Education Program: Hundreds of local school children attend an educational experience that is ongoing at Pioneer Park for two weeks in April and May.
Fashion Show: Vintage fashion shows are performed per special event requests made to Louise Sager, Heritage Society member. Cabins at Pioneer Village O
We began at once for our long journey to Oregon. It is never easy to break the tender ties that bind a wellestablished family to the old home community. My mother ur Favorite Collections was filled with trepidation and anxieties, yet she bore her Back in 1852, young Mary Hill and her family left their fear in Spartan silence. My two sisters, my two brothers, home in Sweetwater, Tennessee for a new home in Oregon, and myself were all fired with the curiosity and eagerness traveling across country in a covered wagon commonly of youth in their teens. Some of this feeling was tempered known as a “prairie schooner.” Many years later, she wrote as we began to realize the immensity of the undertaking in choosing the things that we could take with us. Perhaps, like Mary and her family we want to hang on to treasures that tie us to the past and which we can hand down to our children’s children. Perhaps we like the thrill of the hunt in finding that special treasure or missing item needed to complete
a collection. Many of us enjoy sharing and showing off our collections! We take pride in arranging and displaying them. We love to tell stories about our collections and how they came to be. This year, we want to share our collections – large and small – with you. Beginning with the personal collections of our members all the way up to Ferndale’s own Pioneer Village collection of antique buildings, furniture, and items from a past era. We invite you to come into each of the cabins to explore the collections inside, to enjoy what each cabin has to offer and to hear the stories of our collections.
The Ticket Booth Your first stop at the park is the ticket booth outside the Tillicum House, where Steve and his helpers will be collecting
their favorite collection, MONEY, from the ticket sales. This smiling group of volunteers and gate greeters will start your Olde Fashioned Christmas visit with a cheerful greeting, a hand stamp and all the information you need for a magical trip back in time through the Christmases of the past.
The Holeman House - School House Children’s Collections Come visit our rustic schoolhouse to see our collections of cones, trees, leaves and rocks. Children are notorious collectors of anything weird and wonderful! Back in the pioneer days, collections were more practical as it was hard for children out in the country to find baseball cards, toys, or other manufactured objects for trading. Many of their rustic collections would have been used for decorating or art projects.

Barrett Post Office The Barrett House known as the Trudder Post Office is filled with postal memorabilia to intrigue you. There will a collection of Shells and Beach trinkets on display. Children under age 13 will have the opportunity to write a letter to Santa in the
Holeman house (School house) and mail that letter in the special Santa mailbox located just inside the Trudder Post Office. We’ve asked Santa, if he has time, to please write back to each child in the weeks leading up to Christmas. After mailing their letters, each child will be able to select a toy from our Santa treasure toy box. Linda Cline, former Post Master, has adopted this cabin and invites you to stop by and visit. She reminds us to not forget to write, stamp and mail your own Christmas cards and keep this holiday tradition going.
Lopas House, the Print Shop For Olde Fashioned Christmas 2018, the Lopas House "Favorite Collection" will display thirty miniature East coast lighthouses from The Danbury Mint 1990's collection. Visitors may speak with Juanita who has visited many of the lighthouses on display and was a lighthouse keeper at Dungeness Spit, between Agnew and Sequim on the northern edge of the Olympic Peninsula in NE Clallum County, WA for a week in 1997. Craft materials and Intalco Aluminum Corporation bought the original supplies will be also be available for children to fabricate a site and moved the cabin to their recreation area. In holiday greeting card or tree ornament. 1990, Intalco donated the cabin to Pioneer Village where it now displays a full array of newspaper and printing memorabilia to include the "Linotype" Model 1914, typesetting machine. The Linotype is 103 years old, fully functional, and one of the few known to exist in the United States. Other artifacts include a 1908 F.B. Redington Gounting Machine (a trundleoperated printing press), slug cutter, paper shear press, several magazines for different matrices, bindery press and assorted tools and machine components unique to the printing industry. Lopas House was built in 1879 by Edwin Lopas, a former stove molder from Illinois. Mr. Lopas located his homestead on a high knoll and was Postmaster at Mountain View from 1899 to 1908. Afterwards, he acquired and successfully operated a shingle mill. This two-story cabin was remodeled several times to accommodate his growing family.

The Jenni House
"Our Favorite Collections" is the theme for the Olde Fashioned Christmas cabins this year, and the Jenni house is no exception. Visitors will enjoy a collection of Santas and stockings adorning the cozy sitting room. In the kitchen, Santa's little helpers cut out scrumptious sugar cookies and into the oven they go, filling the house with home baked cookie aroma. While the cookies are baking, Santa's little elves help visiting children craft their own Christmas stocking in the Jenni house's own little Santa's
workshop. Christmas carols invite visitors to venture upstairs where a wonderful collection of dolls awaits - even the Christmas tree is bedecked with dolls! The Jenni House will delight the young and old alike.
Pioneer Park’s Outhouse Don't forget to stop by Pioneer Village’s outhouse. Peek inside for a look at restroom facilities in pioneer times. You will really appreciate today's indoor
plumbing! Back in pioneer days, people collected their old Sears & Roebuck and Montgomery Ward catalogs for use in the outhouse! This year the outhouse is decorated with a twist by Whatcom Frightmare, the folks who host the Haunted Barn in the park in October. Curious? Take a look at the Dickensian style “Nightmare Before Christmas” display!
The Barr Barn Welcome to the Barr Barn for Olde Fashioned Christmas 2018! Be sure to bring the kids to the barn to enjoy the draft horses on display. Paul and Gail Nelson of Reinbow Ranch can't actually bring their whole prized collection, because the barn wouldn't fit all 13 North American Spotted Draft horses in it. We will have some smaller fourlegged friends for the timid tykes who may not want to get close to the large draft horses. Once again, the Barr Barn will be hosting the sleigh photo booth for you and your guest’s 2018 Christmas picture. While at the barn, check out the draft horse show harness on display. The show harness has many parts and is put on as seven different pieces with a lot of adjustable straps. Each harness is
hand cleaned using soap and water on a rag, small soft brush, and a toothbrush to get into the smaller places. All the shiny trim, buckles, and accessories are stainless, or chrome plated. This show harness is cleaned each time it comes off the horse, leaving sweat in the harness leads to the stitching rotting. Because these harnesses are very expensive to replace, they need to be taken very good care of. Don't forget to hitch a ride on the festive horse drawn wagon at the front gate before you leave the Village. The last wagon leaves a half hour before event closing time.

The Larson House Welcome to the Larson House! Mr. Larson is out readying his trap line territory for trapping those
wonderful winter coats! Come in and see the collection of fine furs he has on display. Also, on display will be some fur coats on loan from Louise Sager’s extensive fashions collection. You’ll probably recognize the ornaments made years ago from kits to adorn the tree when we didn’t have money for fancy store-bought ornaments.
The Van Buren Cabin Van Buren Post Office, circa. 1879, was originally located on Van Buren Road. It was first established as a post office 3 miles north of Everson on the Milwaukee Rail Road on October 2, 1891. It served as a post office until November 14, 1918. It was later moved to Berthusen Park in Lynden and, in 1994, was brought to Pioneer Park in pieces and reassembled.
Because there was already a post office in the park, the Van Buren has been renovated and deemed the "First National Bank of Ferndale". Clyde Watkins adopted the cabin this fall and will be displaying a collection of clocks, all shapes and sizes. There will also be “money” themed artifacts for viewing.
Rogers House, Veteran’s Museum The Rogers House, which was built in 1877 by A. A. Rogers, is home to the American Legion Military Museum. It honors the men and women who have served and are currently serving in all branches of the military. The cabin Christmas Collection features military “challenge coins” and model airplanes from WWI and WWII. Children can decorate a vintage airplane ornament to give as a gift or hang on their tree.

Parker House - General Store Perfect Presents, Our Special Collection Christmas spirit is bustling at the Parker House General Store! The store offers you the perfect present or maybe you’ll find that special collectible for someone special. The Pharmacy The History of Dogs will be on display for the Pharmacy’s Collection. Dogs and humans have been together as close companions for the past Fourteen Thousand Years, if not longer. We know for example that when people & dogs began to live together only one other animal with comparable dental characteristics was the wolf, but you wouldn’t want a wolf for a pet! Domesticated dogs have always been our faithful friends. Come on up the stairs from the general store and visit us in the Pharmacy. See our collection of dogs, and a lot of pharmaceutical items from early days in Ferndale. We will be having a free raffle for Gift Baskets full of treats for all! The Shields House Shining Lights The Shields House was built on the Old Guide Road south of Wiser Lake in 1885. It was the second building moved to our Pioneer village in 1950. Its original location was a long way away from the sea, but this two-story house was a monument to craftsmanship of the early pioneers and specifically to Conrad Shields who constructed the house. Linda Harkleroad’s extensive collection of lighthouses will be on display downstairs and includes dishes, lighted holiday lighthouses, the live Christmas tree ornaments in the living room, and many more unique styles.

Upstairs, you will be taken back in time to reminisce what “Grandma’s Attic” used to look like. Children can participate in making a clothespin snowman to take home with them to display or give as a special gift.

Foster House Trains, Angels, and Santa’s - Oh My!! This year the Foster House will have Larry Hanson’s beloved train collection, with trains going around an old-time city much like Ferndale at the turn of the 20th Century. Also downstairs, Kathy Chasteen will have her Angel collection “fluttering” around our collections of old photos, sad irons and many other artifacts unique to this area. Upstairs, several Santa’s from Tom Brand’s collection will be watching to see if you are naughty or nice! Also, upstairs is where kids can decorate a rustic tree ornament (a tree cookie) to add to their tree at home as a reminder of their visit to Olde Fashioned Christmas 2018.

The Granary Ducks and Drakes! Welcome to the Granary, where Julie will be showcasing a collection of duck decoys that belonged to her husband’s grandfather. While here, check out the many farming and logging artifacts used in our local area. There will be a drawing for a souvenir Pioneer Park Tote bag filled with handcrafted items made by folks right here in Whatcom County! Don’t miss it!
The Church Step inside the Congregational church that was originally built in 1876 near Blaine. Sit for a restful, reflective moment in one of the old wooden pews. This is the place for you to rest if you just want some reflection time. Our church has been a sanctuary in the Pacific Northwest for
settlers and visitors alike for 142 years. A collection of Angels will adorn the sincere atmosphere inside the church. Local musical entertainment will be performing in the church throughout the weekend. Song books are provided for sing-a-longs.

Tillicum House The Tillicum House Stuffed Santas It might be cold and chilly outside but here in the Tillicum House it’s warm and friendly. This year we are showcasing a collection of stuffed Santas. Stop by and see if you can count them all! Enjoy the hot cider or cocoa and delicious cookies donated by local businesses. While you eat, listen to the wonderful musicians that donate their time and talents to add to our holiday spirit.

Olde Fashioned Christmas 2018
Pumpkin Pie Crunch 1 15-ounce can pumpkins 1 12-ounce can evaporated milk 3 eggs 1 1/2 cups sugar 1 1/2 tablespoons pumpkin pie spice 1/2 teaspoon salt 1 package yellow cake mix 1 cup pecans, chopped 1 cup butter, melted Ice cream and/or whipped topping Preheat oven to 350 degrees and grease bottom of 13x9" pan. Mix pumpkin, milk, eggs, sugar, pumpkin pie spice and salt in a large bowl. Pour into greased pan. Sprinkle dry cake mix over pumpkin mixture and top with chopped pecans. Drizzle melted butter over the top. Bake for 50-55 minutes or until golden. Serve warm with ice cream and/or whipped topping.

Old-Fashioned Gingerbread 1/4 cup butter ½ cup sugar 1 egg ½ cup buttermilk 1 teaspoon baking soda 1 ½ cups all flour ¼ teaspoon salt 1 ½ teaspoon cinnamon 1 teaspoon ground ginger ¼ teaspoon ground cloves ½ cup full-strength molasses Preheat oven to 375. Grease and flour an 8-inch square baking pan. In a mixing bowl, cream together the butter and sugar until light and fluffy. Add the egg and beat until thoroughly incorporated. Combine the buttermilk and soda; set aside. In a separate bowl, mix flour and spices. Add flour mixture to the butter mixture and gently mix well, scraping down the sides of the bowl occasionally. Stir in the buttermilk, then the molasses. Pour into prepared pan. Bake for 30-35 minutes or until a tester inserted near the center of the cake comes out clean. Cool. Cut gingerbread into pieces and serve sprinkled with powdered sugar.
Wassail 1 gallon apple cider 2 cups cranberry juice ½ cup brown sugar 2 sticks cinnamon 12 cloves 1 orange, thinly sliced 1 apple, thinly sliced Wrap cinnamon and cloves in a piece of cheesecloth, coffee filter, or loose tea bag and secure. In a large pot, combine cider, juice, sugar, apple, orange, and spices. Bring to a boil, then reduce heat and simmer at least 30 minutes. This tastes great and makes your house smell AMAZING! **To add a little extra “adult kick” to the wassail, you can add some rum or brandy by the mug or to the whole batch just before serving.
