Lewis Publishing Co., Inc.

March 29, 2017 To Our Valued Readers,

This special magazine published by the Lynden Tribune and Ferndale Record celebrates the local business community and its many contributions to our wonderful quality of life. Whatcom County is a great place to live, learn, work, and play. It is our hope that after reading through these pages you’ll get to know these businesses, their owners, and their employees just a little bit better and have a greater understanding of what they have to offer. Inside our annual magazine of Who’s Who in Business in Whatcom County you’ll see pages of friendly faces—your neighbors—who offer an amazing variety of goods and services. “Who’s Who” is more than just a directory to the businesses that make Whatcom County their home. This special publication also helps to define our communities that are working hard to establish and build a sustainable economic future. As our population growth continues, so do the number and variety of professional services, retail opportunities and business-tobusiness outlets. Every year, there is less and less reason to leave the county to shop or find top professionals. A mere peek at these pages should convince you of that. The Lynden Tribune and Ferndale Record have always seen ourselves as an integral part of this community. We value this opportunity each year to publish these snapshots of people and businesses that make life special in this, the most beautiful part of Washington state. Please enjoy reading our 2017 Who’s Who Business and Service Directory magazine. We are proud to be associated with these fine businesses and professionals in Whatcom County, and, more importantly, we are proud to do business with many of them. Sincerely,

Michael D. Lewis Publisher

Lynden LYNDEN

Who’s Who 2017

The Waples Mercantile Building is a prominent retail and dining hub in Lynden.

Stroll the heart of Lynden with no particular destination in mind — or have a plan to first explore the big-timbered Waples Mercantile Building and its amenities and then mosey over to the Jansen Art Center before catching a Lynden Dutch Bakery treat or a KATZ bookshop latte. However you slice it, an aura of leisurely enjoyment has returned to downtown Lynden.    2016 felt like the year it all came together. The rebuild of the former Lynden Department Store site was matched by final renovation of Dutch Village Mall and its iconic 72-foot windmill. Together, the two venues offer 42 beautiful rooms for restful lodging after that day of touring the town and its environs. (You can ride a bike for free if you’re staying in The Inn at Lynden.)    Indeed, the nationwide Independent We Stand folks thought Lynden worthy of being called #1 among America’s Main Streets, and the award, with $25,000 cash, was presented at a community celebration on the Fourth of July.    It was also a year to celebrate Lynden’s 125th anniversary. The greatest fun was to first create, and then consume, a 1,250-foot-long strawberry shortcake

Ferndale FERNDALE

VFX Foam creates amazing foam sculptures in Ferndale.

“Made in Ferndale” has become the unofficial motto for the small town situated between Blaine and Bellingham and is known for its elaborate historical background. As housing construction continues to flourish in the outer areas of Ferndale, the mix of various businesses creates an eclectic commercial identity for the town. Within the past year, a major announcement was reassuring for one of the key employers of Ferndale. Alcoa Intalco Works and the Bonneville Power Administration finalized a power deal amendment to keep the aluminum smelter operating into 2018. In August, the Alcoa Intalco facility celebrated its 50th anniversary. The company that was once reported to begin a curtailment of smelter operations is on more solid ground.    Intalco also sold a pier and wharf for $122 million to Petrogas in September 2016. Phillips66 and BP, both of which operate Cherry Point refineries, remain as two other key industrial employers west of Ferndale. The BP plant makes about 85 percent of the aviation fuel needed at SeaTac International Airport.

Other new business to open were Buck’s Barbecue and Ye Old Barber Shop, both on Main Street. In December, Appel Farms moved its cheese operations into a new 12,800-square-foot production and cold-storage facility on Northwest Drive, increasing both efficiency for the farm and positioning the retail

side for future growth. Steady progress led to the expansion for the business that first began production by founder Jack Appel 30 years ago in an 800-square-foot building. Growth also came to long-time businesses Perry Pallet Co., which added a new office building at its location on Delta Line Road. Bellingham BELLINGHAM

Fairhaven features a variety of eclectic business offerings for visitors to enjoy.

Whatcom County has seen recent increases in growth and development. People are fleeing other areas and choosing to occupy the diverse cities within our green and mountainous area. As the Largest city in the county, Bellingham is at the center of it all, offering a diverse mix of business and industry. From healthcare to manufacturing and information technology to retail, every corner of Bellingham has something different.    Every year, students flood in

and out of the city to attend Western Washington University -- one of the larger employers in the area. But what was many years ago multiple small towns of Fairhaven, Sehome, Whatcom and Bellingham has now become a city known for spectacular views found in the Chuckanut Mountains, microbreweries and an open-minded environmentally friendly community.    In fact, Bellingham is home to companies aiding the community in lowering energy consumption.

Ecotech Solar is a locally-owned solar contractor that installs electric systems using locally-made equipment. And both Itek and The Alpha Group manufacture solar systems used by homes and businesses worldwide.    Healthcare encompasses a large portion of the Bellingham industry. PeaceHealth St. Joseph Medical Center has well over 2,000 employees. The county’s full-service hospital has so many support services attached to it, the healthcare industry has grown up around it. practices, alternative medicine groups, assisted-living facilities and the popular Family Care Network of doctors and healthcare not only provides a service, but is also a business in Bellingham, accounting for over 13 percent of the workforce, according to the Bellingham Whatcom Chamber of Commerce & Industry.    But not all business in Bellingham is big business. People, locals and out-of-towners, flood to the downtown area to visit the small record stores, coffee shops, restaurants and consignment clothing boutiques. Downtown also houses Bellingham’s Faithlife, a publisher of Bible study software and one of Bellingham’s largest employers. Faithlife helped to revitalize downtown Bellingham by renovating a key office building and luring restaurants and shops back to the city core.    Retail has proven an important aspect of Bellingham business, from the recently renovated Bellis Fair Mall to the shopping district of Fairhaven, retail not only represents a heavy employment base — the retailers at Bellis Fair Mall employ over 2,000 full-time workers combined — but also offers a diversity in business culture, whether at Bellis Fair, Fairhaven, downtown Bellingham or elsewhere. In total, retail jobs nearly equal Biking is a popular mode of transportation in Fairhaven. those of healthcare. Who’s Who 2017

Blaine, Birch Bay BLAINE, BIRCH BAY

Semiahmoo is one of Blaine’s most popular destinations; its golf course is a major draw.

Located in the northwest reaches of Whatcom County with Interstate 5 running through the area, cross-border trade highlights the commerce of Blaine and Birch Bay. But so does the allure of the ocean.    With a variety of import/export operations located in Blaine, a major branch of the U.S. Department of Homeland Security and a variety of smaller service-related businesses accommodating the needs of pleasure and commercial traffic between the United States and Canada, Blaine serves the needs of the traveler. It does more than that too.    A couple of Blaine’s largest businesses include the manufacturing plants of Nature’s Path Foods, a maker of organic cereal, and Totally Chocolate. Both businesses have continued to grow.    The water will always remain a strong draw for both Blaine and Birch Bay and the tourism community stays

lively, especially during the warmer summer months. Birch Bay offers a robust vacation rental scene.    The history of water-based business in the area has translated into a modern, thriving tourism base. Alaska Packers Association was once the world’s largest salmon cannery. While long since closed, the picturesque setting of the Semiahmoo Spit, where the cannery operated, has been turned into resort. A recent multi-million-dollar renovation to the resort offers one of the most scenic places to stay in all of Whatcom County, all without losing the history of the location.    What to watch for: With the recent overhaul of Semiahmoo’s resort, expect a renewed interest in bringing more life to Blaine’s downtown waterfront and a continued focus on the water-related business activity in Birch Bay.
