LOREN CUNNINGHAM Founder of Youth With A Mission

ABOUT YWAM “In my mind’s eye I could see a world map, alive and moving!” recalls Loren Cunningham. “Waves crashed onto the continents, advancing inland until all the nations were covered. As I watched, the waves became young people of all races. They were my own age and even younger, talking to people on street corners and outside bars. Going from house to house. Helping the lonely and the hungry. Caring for people everywhere they went. Suddenly the scene was gone. What could that be? I wondered. I was barely out of my teens when I experienced that mental movie of the waves. What did it mean? Then I remembered an experience that I had as a 13-year-old, when one day in church the words of Jesus had spoken very directly to me: Go into all the world and preach the good news to all creation.

04

That was the vision. Young people fulfilling the Great Commission of Mark 16:15. An idea began to grow: God wanted to release the resources of youth for lay missions.” Others objected: Youth were unreliable, uncommitted and inexperienced, they said. But God had used Joseph, David and Esther as teenagers. And some of Christ’s disciples were very young when He had sent them out on short-term missions in Luke 10. So in 1960, Youth With A Mission began and the waves became reality. Hundreds of thousands young people went out. Today, because of God’s power and grace, Youth With A Mission has become the largest Mission organization.

We have more than 30, 000 full time workers all over the world. Each year tens of thousand young people, business people, retired people and whole families are joining us for short term programs in more than six hundred ministry locations in 135 countries.

Until the year 2000 we hope to establish 1000 training locations and 3000 ministry locations (evangelism, mercy ministry and training) all over the world. We especially hope to raise non-Western missionaries, their zeal and different cultural background will benefit the furthering of the Gospel.

Youth With A Mission believes that the Gospel is not only God’s Word, but that it has to be put into everyday practice. Using different means and tools of evangelization, we go out and share the Good News. Founder Loren Cunningham has set some goals for Youth With A Mission:

YWAM BACKGROUND Youth With A Mission (YWAM), founded in 1960, is an international interdenominational Christian organization operating in more than 900 locations in over 140 countries. With staff of over 30,000, YWAM aims to spread the love of God through helping with the practical and physical needs of people around the world and training Christians to serve in a variety of fields.

ABOUT US YWAM SHIPS PHILIPPINES

OUR SHIP

Is a non-profit, charitable organization on a mission to reach isolated communities in the country. Out of 7, 641 islands of the archipelago, 2,000 of which are inhabited and only 500 islands have access to a medical facility. This leaves 1,500 isolated islands without access to health services. Our thrust is to bring teams in collaboration with the local government, civic societies and private organizations and deliver aid through Primary Health Care services, community development training, and values formation. We seek to mobilize isolated communities towards sustainable development and positive transformation.

FLOTILLA

YWAM FLOTILLA is a ministry of a smaller scale from our main vessel, the MV Pacific Link. This initiative taps into different yacht owners who are willing to share a month’s use of their own vessel to launch mission trips into more accessible isolated islands. This short term initiative empowers various yacht owners not only an opportunity to take part in the project but also hastens the delivery of aid and services to Filipinos in need.

OF AREAS

Geographic Isolated Disadvantaged Areas (GIDA) communities most in need.

11

WHAT WE D 12

AT E DO 13

HEALTH CARE Many remote island communities in the Philippines have significant difficulty in accessing healthcare services. The ship and floatilla project bridges this isolation gap by travelling to community locations that are normally inaccessible to air or land transportation. Deploying multiple teams ashore, we go the extra mile in delivering free health services to places that may not have any doctors or dentists available.

14

HEALTH PROGRAMS INCLUDE o Primary Health Care o Eye Health (Optometry) and glasses distribution o Dentistry o Health education promotion o Distribution of vitamins and medical consumables

15

COMMUNITY DEVELOPMENT Hard to reach areas of the country have the least access to aid and development services that can stimulate their community growth. YWAM Ships aims to help support basic aid delivery and build capacity by starting sustainable projects that stimulate development. The ship will deliver goods and services alongside training and education for skill based tools.

16

COMMUNITY PROGRAMS INCLUDE o Water filtration o Sanitation o Agricultural Education

17

VALUES FORMATION We believe in a holistic approach towards developmental goals. Our aim is to not only address the physical concerns that plague isolated communities but also tap into building encouragement and healthy camaraderie for human growth.

18

VALUES FORMATION PROGRAMS INCLUDE o Discipleship and counseling o Youth & Family Values Programs o Community engagement and education for children o Materials distribution for values formation

TESTIMONIALS My family and thousands of others live in the beautiful islands all across the Pacific Ocean. We are part of a very diverse region with many different languages communities and cultures. However, we live with one challenge; we are isolated. ~ Michael Dokta YWAM staff volunteer During one of our trips to Papua New Guinea, we met a man named Abraham, He lived in an isolated island just north of Madang. He hasn’t seen for more than 17 years and because of that, he lost his livelihood, he lost hope, his entire village couldn’t wait for the ship to come in. After a simple 30 min operation on his eyes, his vision was restored. In addition to Abraham, 10 others had their eyesight restored. ~ Brett Curtis (YWAM Ships Kona Director) I remember the first time I’ve seen a blind person see again and in that moment it was so much more than their sight being repaired. It was a restoration of their hope. That’s why it is so worth it. ~ Emily West (Nurse volunteer)
