MY BEST ADVICE? PURCHASE REAL ESTATE NOW & YOUR FUTURE SELF WILL THANK YOU How our world has changed over the last 18 months! For many of us, it has been a period of self-reflection, thoughtful consideration of our future, and a renewed commitment to self-improvement. However, there is also a cost to the pandemic, which will continue to be part of our lives, even as things return to normal. Remote work may be a constant from now on, but at what expense? Do each of us possess the self-discipline to maintain our ability to improve ourselves in our personal and professional lives? Can we remain consistent and productive while working remotely on a full-time basis? I think not. We are a social society, and we crave interaction with others… at work and at play. Communication in person rather than constant texting and emailing is imperative to maintaining true connections with our friends, family, colleagues and clients. Our school children desperately need this social interaction, as well. If you believe some of the hype, the spirit of America has been diminished, but I don’t see it that way. As many of you know, I am a veteran of the U.S. Navy, having flown in a Navy Fighter Squadron during the Vietnam conflict aboard the aircraft carrier USS Coral Sea, a sister ship to San Diego’s USS Midway. Because of that military background, my heart is always drawn to our service men and women and what our country has done for its citizens. It saddens me to think that we have lost an appreciation for all that our veterans, especially the Great Generation of those who defended freedom in WWII, have given us. We have so many things for which to be thankful, but that gratitude is not voiced frequently or loudly enough. My age group grew up post-WWII...many of our parents had nothing. But hard work, family commitment, and optimism propelled them, and us as children. Success isn’t always defined by financial achievements. If one is committed to personal goals, community, and family, then one will have become an active participant in our country’s success. So, how does this relate to real estate? To answer that question, I reflect back to my first purchase during my early 20s: a vacant lot and run-down triplex in Pacific Beach. I remodeled the triplex and built a house on the land. It wasn’t easy, but the initial struggle to pay for this was worth it. The real estate investment created financial appreciation far greater than I could have earned harboring the money in a savings account. We will no doubt continue to see rising values and a scarcity of properties in desirable locations. So my best advice – and it’s what I have put into practice in my own life for decades – is buy now. Enjoy the benefits of home ownership or investment properties. Then, in 1015 years, you will pat yourself on the back and tell yourself how astute you were, how savvy you were in making that original purchase. As said, many in my generation have accumulated wealth not by saving money, but by buying and holding real estate.

paru tea bar In a world divided between coffee and tea drinkers, this Point Loma gem will make even the most blaring of bean lovers applaud the lofty assortment of loose leaf teas at PARU, located on Cañon Street between Locust and Rosecrans in Point Loma. The interior of PARU is a reflection of its product: functional, deliberate, and profound in its simplicity. The east-facing wall is adorned with two rows of sturdy wooden shelves, each holding a various assortment of blended tea leaves that were hand-packaged right here in San Diego. The blends are bespoke to PARU, and they are the product of its founder, Amy Truong. When visiting, we had the chance to briefly speak with her, and her knowledge of tea spread as wide as her friendliness and enthusiasm when speaking to patrons. We purchased the Champagne Oolong, a must-try for tea lovers. The leaves are allowed to be bitten by leafhoppers before harvesting; this produces a reaction in the plant that releases polyphenols and aromatic compounds. The result is a slightly sweet taste that pairs superbly with the woodiness of the leaves themselves. Be sure to stop by next time you’re in town!

Candor is a European-styled bistro with a menu that was inspired by Chef Giuseppe’s upbringing on his family’s farm in Italy.

When it comes to ingredients, as many of them as possible are sourced from local farmers and fishermen; the produce comes directly from the La Jolla Farmers Market, which is less than half a mile from the restaurant itself. Because of this, the menu is seasonal. The flavors of each dish are straightforward in its farm-to-table approach, with nuance added every so subtly by what is chosen to accompany focus of each plate- whether that be complimenting vegetables, a sauce, or both. On our visit, we tried the Grilled Mission Fig & Wild Arugula Salad. Tossed between the figs and pleasantly bitter pieces of arugula were bursts of flavor found in goat cheese, dates, and the white balsamic-dijon dressing. Frisée in the salad provided crunch, and it also rounded out the flavor profile of a salad that was elegant in its simplicity.

Food from the Philippines is characterized as having the bold yet balanced combination of sweet, savory, and tangy in each of their dishes. CARiN de RiA, which is located just off of Encinitas’ main strip on West I Street, manages to perfectly capture each of these characteristics with every plate they serve. For the uninitiated, we suggest two dishes in particular: the Sizzling Lechon Sisig as your main course, and Halo-Halo for dessert. Sisig is a dish made up of grilled cubed pork that is served on a hot cast iron skillet.
