CULTURE Etchings Art Gallery (031 563 6431) can be found at Shop 10, Park Boulevard, 11 Browns Drift Road. Established in 1993, it supports and promotes the work of the new and well-established artists, showcasing original art and specialising in mirrors, prints and framing. Imbizo Gallery (082 897 0190) at Shop 25, The Pearls Walk Mall. Fine art consultants stocking a wide selection of abstract, contemporary, landscape, tribal and wildlife art, as well as leading sculptors such as Anton Smit, Sarah Richards and Llewellyn Davies. ATTRACTIONS Situated at 490 Riverside Road on the banks of the Umgeni, the Umgeni River Bird Park (031 579 4600) encompasses 3.5 hectares of lush tropical landscapes and houses an ever-increasing collection of more than 800 birds from 200 species. There are free-flight bird shows at 11:00 & 14:00, Tues-Sun, and a tea garden serving refreshments. Children can hop aboard the mini-train at the Model Engineers’ Miniature Railway (031 205 1089) at Kellaway Hall, Virginia, on the 2nd and 4th Sunday of the month, 11:00-16:00. The only organisation of its kind in the world, the Sharks Board (031 566 0400) in Umhlanga has audio-visual shows, shark dissections and life-like replicas of sharks and other fish in its museum. Book an early morning boat trip out to sea and watch the shark nets being checked. Visit an indoor trampoline park at Jump4Joy (031 563 0106) in Durban North with its interconnected trampolines, basketball slam dunk lanes and trampoline dodgeball – not to mention a bouncy foam pit. Children’s entertainment at Gateway Theatre of Shopping comprises Electric Avenue (031 566 1897) and Mr Funtubbles Fabulous Family Fun Fair (031 584 6645), as well as action karting, ten-pin bowling and adventure putt-putt (031 566 2247), and the country’s first permanent snow park at Snow Wonderland (031 566 2010). Go Wild at the Wavehouse (031 584 9404), which offers supertubes in addition to a flowrider, pumptrax, splashpad and toddler zone. Lying between Umdloti and Umhlanga, Sibaya Casino & Entertainment Kingdom (031 580 5000) has over 1000 slot and 24 touch-bet roulette machines as well as roulette, blackjack and poker tables, not to mention a luxury hotel and conference facilities, iZulu Theatre, Krakatoa Bar, Mangwanani Spa and children’s entertainment centre. Westbrook Beach is the jewel in the crown of coastal attractions, having been awarded full Blue Flag status for a number of years. The international Blue Flag is awarded for consistent excellence in the areas of safety, amenities, cleanliness

38 and environmental management. Both Umhlanga Main and Umdloti Main beaches, which have routinely qualified for the Blue Flag in the past, have pilot Blue Flag status for the 2019/20 season. The best of the coastal nature reserves are Beachwood Mangroves (083 644 3767), with its unique swamp forest, estuarine ecosystem and guided canoeing trips; Hawaan Forest (031 566 4018), which has a pristine indigenous woodland and offers guided trails; and the Umhlanga Lagoon (031 561 4257), where there are lovely coastal and dune forests, small buck and monkeys, the remains of a Stone Age seashell midden, and child-friendly walks (031 561 2271).
