The role of the athletic program is to support the overall University mission. Intercollegiate competition has been an integral part of higher education in America for more than a century. The University endorses the concept of “Athletics as Education” described in the policy statement adopted by the American Council on Education in 1984, which cites key contributions of athletics to the individual, the institution, and society as a whole, as follows: “Among these contribtuions are the development of discipline, teamwork and self-confidence of individuals who particpate, the improvment and substance of institutional reputations and morale, and the heightening of visibility that aids in recruitment of students and financial contributions.” The basic premise underlying these very positive contributions is that athletics is, and must continue to be, an important part of the educational process.

SEASON OUTLOOK L

ynn University’s men’s soccer team took a big hit with the graduation of five All-Americans but just as it has always done, it reloaded. The Fighting Knights brought in 17 new players to go along with eight returning letterwinners in hopes for a run at the 2009 NCAA Division II National Championship. “We had a great run last year [going 18-2] and that was due in large part to the experience and leadership of five AllAmericans,” said head coach John Rootes. “Are we going to replace them all at once? No, no one can do that. You have to plug your holes and develop young players and I think we’ve done a very good job of that with our incoming class.” Of the 17 new student-athletes, 12 are underclassmen and the five remaining are transfers with two years of eligibility left. With a lot of new faces, team cohesion could be a problem but Coach Rootes isn’t worried too much. The Knights’ schedule is forgiving early on before getting into the always difficult Sunshine State Conference. Lynn takes on two teams in the NSCAA preseason top-25 in Tampa and West Florida but also plays the likes of previouslyranked schools such as Clayton State and Christian Brothers. “We have a favorable schedule to start off the season where I hope, combined with our preseason, the guys learn to play together. The team can’t overlook our first road trip because it’s difficult to travel to Arkansas but if we can win there it would go a long way in helping our cause on our next trip to Georgia and South Carolina. “Those early trips will really prepare us for our grueling conference season and give us a leg up when it comes to the NCAA Tournament selection process.” The Blue & White boast a big strong team with lots of depth, something that was lacking last season. Paired with the fact the returning players have come back extremely fit, LU hopes its lack of experience won’t be a weakness.

FORWARD

and Jon Schatz also will fight for playing time.

Sophomore Paulo Vaz has big shoes to fill up top as the primary goal scorer after replacing All-American and MLS first round draft pick Jean Alexandre and his 20 goals. Vaz, though, is up to the challenge. No slacker himself, he tallied 12 goals and was ranked 34th in the nation for goals per game as a freshman at Central Methodist. Junior Robert Carrick has also shown promise up top, displaying a solid shot away from the net. The Knights also have the luxury of moving Taboada, Conrad and Wolf to forward as each has a knack for finding the back of the net.

DEFENSE

MIDFIELD Midfield is the area with the most depth for the Fighting Knights as 13 players have experience there. Christian Donert will continue his role in the middle where he excelled last year as a freshman. A great defensive player, he will look get more involved offensively. Sophomore Luke Magill and junior Scott McCubbin will join Donert in the middle with Magill taking on an offensive role to McCubbin’s defensive presence. All three players have a tireless work ethic and endless amount of endurance. Seniors Tom Goldie and Matt Prickett have showed tremendous gains from last season with Goldie figuring in as a defensive substitution and Prickett seeing field time as a finisher. The outside wings will have a three-man rotation with junior Kyle Conrad and senior Gabe Taboada leading the charge. That duo combined for nearly a quarter of the team’s offensive output last year. Opposing teams won’t receive much of a breather when either hits the bench and new addition Stefan Wolf enters the field. The sophomore transfer was named the Southern States Athletic Conference Freshman of the Year last season and should be able to use his speed outside. Sophomore Javier Jiminez gained valuable experience the previous year and figures into the Knights plans’ while freshmen Roberto Cadihle, Tommy Guerra, Joel Julio

One of the more intact units remaining, two starters return to a defense with height and the ability to possess the ball. All-SSC Second Team honoree Sam Craven (6-foot2) and Joe Cundall, both juniors, are back but competition is fierce with the additions of junior Scott Gordon (6-foot-4) as well as freshmen Brent Lawler (6-foot-2) and David Kunin (5-foot-10). A spring enrollee who has gained familiarity with the team, Gordon has the speed, size and strength to anchor the middle and could be a nice pairing with Craven. The four remaining players, though, could be interchangeable in myriad of ways with Lawler seeing time in the middle and right, Craven in the middle and left, and Cundall and Kunin both on the outside. Vying for competition with the quintet is freshmen Lewis Clack and Anthony Desperito. Both Clack and Desperito have size (6-foot-2) and skill to compete and could crack the lineup after more practice time.

GOALKEEPER Lynn has put a goalie on the All-SSC team in each of the last six seasons and will be looking to extend that streak among a trio of players. The battle rages between sophomore Matt DiCerbo, junior Alessandro Salvatore and freshman Robbie Hannon. DiCerbo has the most experience of the group, having started for much of last season at Lenoir-Rhyne. His unflappable and solid all-around play will make it hard to keep him off the pitch. No stranger to LU, Salvatore returns to the Knights after a two-year hiatus. He exhibits great athletic ability as well as a propensity to make the acrobatic save. Hannon will push for playing time as well as learn what it takes to compete at the Division II level.

COACHING STAFF J

ohn Rootes begins his second season as head coach of the Lynn University men’s soccer team. Not daunted by inheriting one of the top NCAA Division II programs in the country, he led the Fighting Knights to the best record in the nation (18-2) while winning Sunshine State Conference regular season and tournament titles. Through 21 years of coaching, Rootes has posted a 298-97-22 (.741) career mark and brought four schools, Lynn, Savannah College of Art and Design, Clayton State and Southern New Hampshire, to the postseason.

2ND SEASON

Head Coach JOHN ROOTES

On top of helping the Blue & White reach the NCAA Tournament for the fourth consecutive year and 10th overall, he oversaw a five-man senior class that earned All-America accolades and successfully converted defensive midfielder Jean Alexandre into one of the top forwards in the nation. Alexandre later became the highest drafted student-athlete in Lynn history when he was the 12th overall pick by Real Salt Lake in the Major League Soccer Superdraft. Formerly the head coach at Savannah College of Art and Design, Rootes became the fourth coach in program history on March 31, 2008. He brought with him a proven track record, one in which he averaged just over 14 wins a season and reached the postseason 11 times, winning the 1989 NCAA Division II National Championship at SNHU. Amassing a 47-26-2 (.627) record in four years at SCAD, Rootes led the Bees to the NAIA Region XIV Tournament finals in three consecutive seasons. In just his second year at Savannah, he established the program record for wins (13-4-1) while earning the program’s first national ranking (as high as no. 18) and postseason appearance. A new challenge awaited Rootes at Clayton State as he took over a program that had only two winning seasons prior to his arrival. Three years into his tenure, the Lakers posted an 18-3-1 record and earned their first Peach Belt Championship and NCAA Regional bid. CSU would go on to record a 69-38-9 (.634) mark during his six-year stay, winning two conference championships and securing a pair of NCAA bids. During his time at SNHU, Rootes compiled a 169-30-11 (.831) record and elevated the program to national prominence. In 10 seasons, the Penmen were consistently ranked in the Intercollegiate Soccer Association of America National Top 10 and earned three 20-win seasons, six NCAA Division II Tournament bids, four appearances in the Elite Eight and an NCAA National Championship in 1989. Nine of his players were named NSCAA All-Americans and 15 have gone on to professional soccer careers. Prior to becoming a head coach in New Hampshire, Rootes worked as the senior assistant coach under I.M. Ibrahim at NCAA Division I powerhouse Clemson University. While with the Tigers, he helped the school to the 1987 National Championship and the 1988 World Collegiate Championship. As a player, Rootes was a four-year starter for legendary coach Barry Barto at Philadelphia College of Textiles & Sciences (now Philadelphia University) and the University of Nevada, Las Vegas. Rootes led Textile to an undefeated season and a No. 1ranking in the final coaches' poll in 1980, and guided UNLV to its first NCAA Tournament bid in 1983. Rootes was honored twice as an NSCAA All-West striker and was a member of the 1984 United States Amateur team. He also played two years of professional soccer for the Boston Storm in 1994 and 1995. Rootes holds a U.S. Soccer Federation "A" license, an NSCAA Advanced National Diploma and a master's degree in sport science. Rootes and his wife, Alicia, have two children, Savannah (9) and Thomas (6).

ric Abreu enters his 19th season as an assistant men’s soccer coach at Lynn University. A native of Madeira, Portugal, Abreu served as LU’s head men’s golf coach for 11 years. Over the last several years he has been an integral part of helping the men’s soccer program to a national championship and the men’s golf team to two Sunshine State Conference titles and a pair of NCAA Championship appearances.

19TH SEASON

Assistant Coach ERIC ABREU

A former professional soccer player, Abreu spent 21 years honing his skills in South Africa, Hong Kong, the Phillipines, New Zealand, Japan and Australia. He was chosen to represent both Japan and Hong Kong in league elect matches. Following the completion of his playing career, Abreu came to Lynn, arriving in 1985 as an assistant to then-coach Roy Wiggemansen. Instrumental in recruiting a number of key players which helped to begin the storied history of Fighting Knight soccer, Abreu was a member of the coaching staff in 1987 as the Knights captured the first-ever national title in school history. Abreu left Boca Raton in 1989 to spend four years in Europe, returning in 1993 as the head women’s golf coach, a position he held for one year before assuming control of the men’s golf program in 1994. Under his direction, the men’s golf team claimed the 1996 NAIA National Title. In the fall of 1996, he rejoined the men’s soccer staff under former coach Shaun Pendleton and has been on the LU bench ever since. Born Eric Agostinho Abreu on Feb. 28, 1945, he is currently single and resides in Boca Raton.

FACILITIES he epicenter of the Fighting Knights Athletics Department, the Count & Countess de Hoernle Sports and Cultural Center sits in the heart of the Lynn University campus. Completed in 1993, the center is the home court for the Lynn University volleyball and men’s and women’s basketball programs. Lynn’s 19 National Championship banners hang proudly from its rafters.

T

Housing four team locker rooms and one officials locker room, two athletic training rooms and laundry facilities, the de Hoernle Center also contains offices for all of Lynn’s coaches and administrators. During volleyball and basketball games fans can relax in the retractable chairback seating on one side or sit close to the teams on the retractable bleachers. The combined seating capacity is 1,000. The front lobby is home to the Michael & Julie Chadwick Wall of National Champions, a space that has plaques recognizing the Fighting Knights National Championship teams, and six trophy cases which hold the many NAIA and NCAA individual and team honors of Lynn’s 11 programs. The de Hoernle Center is not just used for athletics; the gym floor is converted at the start of each academic year for Orientation and at each year's conclusion for Commencement. A new addition was welcomed into lobby of the de Hoernle Center in 2008, the Athletic Hall of Fame. Twenty-eight former student-athletes and administrators are honored on the wall for their accomplishments while with the Blue and White. The first basketball game held on the floor came on Dec. 28, 1993, as the LU women downed Michigan-Dearborn 99-72. The Knights men’s team played its first game on the floor two days later, besting Findlay 103-93 on Dec. 30, 1993. The first-ever Lynn volleyball game at de Hoernle was on Sept. 12, 1996. Home to the Fighting Knights’ outdoor sports, the McCusker Sports Complex is the site of the baseball, softball, soccer and tennis teams at Lynn University and has been the host of Sunshine State Conference and NCAA National and Regional Tournaments. The only home Lynn soccer has ever known, the McCusker Sports Complex Field has seen its share of shining moments in Fighting Knights soccer history. With its plush Bermuda grass playing surface, the field is nestled on the southwest corner of Lynn’s campus. Six national championship teams have played on the soccer field formerly known as “the graveyard.” Team benches and accommodations for the media, game staging personnel and administrators are located on one side of the field with two sets of covered bleachers and a concession stand on the other side. From 1996 to 1998, the field was the place to be to witness NCAA Division II National Finals. The Lynn women took part in the 1996 NCAA championship game while the Fighting Knights men took on Cal State-Bakersfield in the 1997 title tilt. The Lynn women captured the 1998 final on the field, downing Sonoma State 3-1 on Dec. 6, 1998. Recently the men’s soccer team defeated Lander 8-0 on Nov. 10, 2005 in the NCAA Division II Quarterfinals, the second largest margin of victory in the program’s illustrious post-season history. Lynn’s baseball field is located on the southeast corner of campus, sharing a border with Military Trail and Potomac Road. Long home runs can be seen crossing mid-day traffic as the Blue and White play all of their games during the day. Recent facelifts to the field include a new scoreboard in right field, new Bermuda grass infield and outfield and a crushed brick warning track. Dimensions are 315-right field, 355-right center, 405-center field, 365-left center and 325-left field. The baseball program claimed its first national championship in 2009. The softball field is located adjacent to the baseball field and share outfield bleachers. This field saw a program record 88 home runs sail over its fences in 2005, which are 190 down the lines and 220 to straightaway center field. The softball field received a face lift in 2006 with new outfield turf and a crushed brick warning track installed. Both men’s and women’s tennis teams host their events on the McCusker Complex’s six tennis courts. The men’s and women’s tennis teams have hosted the NCAA South Regional tournament the last four consecutive years, the first time in program history that occurred. The women’s tennis team has won six national championships while the men’s program celebrated its first national crown in 2007. These two programs have combined for 12 Sunshine State Conference Championships as Lynn also became the first school in conference history to hold back-to-back titles on both the men’s and women’s side simultaneously from 2006 to 2007. Although not on situated on campus, the Lynn men’s and women’s golf team take advantage of some of the best courses that Boca Raton has to offer . The women’s program practices at three local golf clubs, Boca Lago Country Club (www.bocalago.com), Boca Woods Country Club (www.southfloridacountryclub.com) and Boca Delray Country Club (www.bocadelray.net) while the men’s squad calls both Ocean Breeze Golf & Country Club (www.oceanbreezegolf.com) and Boca Country Club (www.bocaresort.com/golf) home.

Sunshine State Conference ounded in March of 1975, the Sunshine State Conference has risen from a single-sport organization to become the NCAA Division II “Conference of Champions.” Started as a basketball conference, The SSC has since grown steadily in sports played, membership and national prominence. A weekly check of national rankings in nearly any Division II sport proves the point, as SSC member institutions consistently find themselves ranked amongst the nation’s elite.
