SEASON OUTLOOK Win the Sunshine State Conference, win the South Region, win the National Championship. These are the goals year in and year out for head coach Mike Perez and the Lynn University women’s tennis program. And in 2011, it is not any different. After dominating the ITA South Region in the fall with six players in the Elite Eight and an all-Lynn Final Four, the Fighting Knights have assembled an extremely deep team with an NCAA-high six players ranked in the top-22 in the nation. “Although winning the national championship is our ultimate goal every year, you cannot look past your first goals: they build on each other,” said Perez. The Fighting Knights feature a seniorladen team with four seniors but are also building for the future with five talented freshmen on the roster. Heading the senior class are Magdalena Ekert and Eleonora Iannozzi as well as Jessica Yanoff and newcomer Isabell Raich. After finishing with an 18-6 record while earning All-America honors in both singles and doubles in 2010, Ekert will likely see the most time at No. 1 as a senior. The Gdansk, Poland, native also had a tremendous Fall advancing to the Final Four in singles while falling in the Doubles Championship with Raich.

a 24-1 overall record, the Italian won the South Regional to move to the Small College National Championships.
most international competitors, the key will be working on a faster court than they are used to.”
“With Eli, it will be a matter of consistency and confidence as she had a good career and an even better fall. We will also be expecting her to take a leadership role with this group since she is team captain this year.”
Adding depth to the Fighting Knights this season will be redshirt freshman Roxana Alexandru as well as first-year players Alexandra Vukadinovic and Sydney Putnam.
Like Iannozzi, Yanoff also carried her momentum from the end of 2010 into the fall. After winning her final eight matches in 2010 and finishing with a 204 overall mark, Yanoff fell to Iannozzi in the South Regional Championship. “This is the best I have ever seen Jessica play but she has always shown the potential to do so. She had an amazing fall and has a terrific hard-court game.” A Third Team All-Conference USA selection as a junior at Marshall University, Raich went 24-12 in singles and 20-12 in doubles primarily out of the third position. A native of Klaus, Austria, Raich also advanced to the Final Four in the South Regional. “Izzy [Isabell Raich] has had three years of Division I experience playing at Marshall University and her game has even improved since she stepped onto campus in the fall. She is a tremendous athlete with incredible fitness and I expect great things from her this spring.”
“Maggie has had an incredible career at Lynn with a lot of experience playing in two national championship finals and was a point away from a third. She had a great fall season and if she believes in herself this will be her year to shine.”
Freshmen Ioana Ivan (Snagon, Romania) and Andrea Berkova (Jihlava, Czech Republic) lead a solid group of newcomers after having great success overseas.
Iannozzi continued in the fall right where she left off in the Spring. Closing out 2010 on a 15-match winning streak with
“Ioana and Andrea both have tremendous skill and have a lot of credentials and experience as Junior players. Like
Once again, the Fighting Knights will take on one of, if not the most difficult schedules in the country. Among the opponents are seven programs that are ranked in the preseason Top-10, including No. 1 Armstrong Atlantic in the regular season finale at the Perper Tennis Complex on April 9. “In order to see where you are and what level you need to be at, you need to play against the very best,” said Perez. The SSC is consistently the best tennis conference in the nation and once again will prove a stiff test for the Fighting Knights with Barry, Rollins and Florida Southern all nationally-ranked. When not facing the top teams in the NCAA, the Blue & White will take on Fresno-Pacific and Auburn-Montgomery who are ranked No. 1 and 2 in the NAIA. The Fighting Knights open the season on the road against conference opponents Saint Leo and Florida Southern on February 5-6 while the home opener is scheduled for February 9 against Northwood (Fla.).
Reaching the NCAA finals with the women’s squad for the second consecutive season and seventh time overall in 2009, the Fighting Knights kicked off the season on a 28-match winningstreak. Perez’s Blue and White squad took down a pair of topranked teams, Armstrong Atlantic State and BYU-Hawai’i, en route to setting the program record for wins. Going undefeated in league play and winning a record ninth Sunshine State Conference championship, Perez was recognized for his efforts by being named SSC Coach of the Year an unprecedented eighth time and tabbed South Region Coach of the Year.
Season after season, Lynn University men's and women's tennis coach Mike Perez has shown he is able to do one thing: produce champions. Now in his 22nd season in Boca Raton, the man with seven national titles to his credit has shown consistency in not only producing champions on the tennis courts, but also in the classroom. Academically, Perez's teams rank at or near the top of the LU Athletic Department's grade point average listing year after year. Perez's tennis programs have become synonymous with success with nearly 800 career wins. Boasting an overall record of 778-202 (.794), Perez has notched 445 victories with the women and 333 on the men's side. Under his tutelage, the number of honors is downright staggering as 49 different AllAmerica players have donned the Blue and White for a total of 132 separate honors. This past season, the women’s team won its 14th consecutive Regional Championship and got as far as the NCAA Semifinals. The trip to the Final Four was the fifth-straight for Perez and the Blue & White as they fell to NCAA Runner-Up BYUHawaii. For the first time since 2008, under the tutelage of Perez, two Fighting Knights, Magdalene Ekert and Katerina Jiskrova earned All-America honors in both singles and doubles. The duo, as well as Eleonora Iannozzi, all received SSC First-Team honors in singles, the first time that has happened since 2000. On the men’s side, Perez led Lynn University to its thirdstraight 19-win season. Like the women, three Fighting Knights: Tomas Racak, Alessandro Sarra and Willi Wolfer, all received SSC First-Team honors in singles. Wolfer also became just the second Lynn player to win the SSC Freshman of the Year award. The trio of men also all-received All-America honors in either singles or doubles, the sixth-straight year LU had three All-America selections.

On the men’s side, the 2009 Knights put together their best Sunshine State Conference season with its first undefeated league season. Although bowing out in the NCAA quarterfinals, the Blue and White finished the season ranked third in the country while senior Julien Carsuzaa was named SSC Player of the Year, South Region and National Senior Player of the Year while breaking the school records for both singles and doubles victories. The 2008 Fighting Knights women’s squad reached the NCAA finals for the sixth time before bowing out to Armstrong Atlantic State. Lynn won 26 matches while sweeping through Sunshine State Conference player for yet another undefeated season and an eighth league championship. In 2007, Perez brought the Fighting Knights to new heights by setting program-bests in victories for the men with 24 and a then-best 25 with the women. The men's squad earned its first national title with a 5-1 victory over defending champions Valdosta State, the school that knocked off the Knights in the title match the year before. Winning the Sunshine State Conference title on the men's and women's side in 2007, Lynn became the first school to win back-to-back titles with both teams in league history. Perez was named SSC Coach of the Year for both squads, earning him a record sixth time with the women and the second consecutive with the men. Honors abounded for Perez in 2007 as he picked up ITA Southeast Region Coach of the Year accolades with the men and women. He was also named the Division II National Coach of the Year for the men, the first time he has won the award in the NCAA. Also impressive was Perez's inclusion as Top Coach on the First 25 Years on the SSC's Women's Tennis Silver Anniversary Team. Lynn represented a league-best five players, including Top Player Monika Mastalirova, despite only being in the conference for eight years.

During the 2006 fall season, Lynn swept the ITA Southeast Region Championships on both sides. The doubles pair of Dennis Riegraf and Julien Carsuzaa also won the ITA ‘Super Bowl' of Small College Tennis, a first for Perez, and won their first round match at the ITA National Indoor Championships against the defending Division I champions from Pepperdine University. Carsuzaa would again win the Division II doubles title two years later as a senior in 2008, teaming with sophomore Alessandro Sarra to achieve the feat. Along with the women's program's six national titles, Perez also boasts the third best all-time record in NCAA Division II postseason tournament play for active schools with a 60-13 (.822) record. Always clutch on the big stage, his teams have made 14 consecutive championship appearances and 13 final fours since becoming a D-II institution in the 1997 season. Only traditional powerhouses Armstrong Atlantic and BYUHawaii have better winning percentages, but both have lost National Titles at the hands of Perez's Fighting Knights.
and the Blue and White are 17-4 in the past five seasons, reaching the final match both 2006 and 2007. An accomplished high school and collegiate baseball player in Arizona, Perez moved to Florida in 1988 and joined the LU athletics family as an assistant tennis coach. One season later he assumed the reigns of both the men's and women's program, putting into motion what has proved to be a tradition of success, excellence and domination. His first women's national title came in 1993 as the Knights captured the NAIA National Championship. The team would win it all again at the NAIA level in 1995 and 1996 before the school decided to move to the NCAA and eventually the Sunshine State Conference. The move up to the NCAA did little to slow down the success of the women's program as the Knights took home the hardware in 1997 and 1998, both times at the expense of Armstrong Atlantic. Perez won four national titles in succession, a feat normally reserved for coaching legends. Lynn added another national title in 2001 with a 5-3 victory over BYU-Hawaii, the Seasiders' first Division II loss after a 103-match winning streak. As a Division II program, the Knights also have four of runner-up finishes and 12 semifinals appearances. For his efforts on the women's side, the 1987 University of Arizona political science graduate was named NAIA National Coach of the Year in 1993, 1995 and 1996. The Sunshine State Conference bestowed the same honor upon him in 1998, 1999, 2003, 2004, 2006, 2007 and most recently the 2008 season. The Palm Beach County Sports Hall of Fame named him their Coach of the Year in 2002, while the NAIA named him Coach of the Decade for the 90's. Perez's coaching acumen isn't just confined to the women's program as his men's team has been a player on the national scene as well. The 1993 NAIA District 25 Coach of the Year, Perez's teams finished in the national top 10 every season from 1993-1997. Their success didn't stop once LU decided to make the move to the NCAA ranks, as the Knights have finished in the Top-25 every season. Michael Steven Perez was born on Sept. 17, 1965 in Newburgh, N.Y. He has been married to the former Melissa Nace since July of 1998. They are the proud parents of Madeline Elizabeth who was born on Sept. 13, 2001. The Perez family currently resides in Lake Worth. Away from tennis, Perez is always working to lower his handicap around the greens and also enjoys maintaining his garden and engaging in lively political discussions.
On the men's side, Perez's squads have reached the postseason 12 times since beginning NCAA play in 1997. The Knights' 26-11 (.703) overall championship record is sixth best all-time

After finishing one of the most decorated men’s tennis careers at Lynn University, Julien Carsuzaa is in his second season as an assistant coach with the Fighting Knights. Carsuzaa is the program’s all-time leader in both singles and doubles victories and was a member of LU’s first men’s tennis national championship team in 2007.
One of the greatest men’s tennis players to ever don the Blue & White, Tomas Racak returns to the Boca Raton campus to serve his first season as an assistant tennis coach for the Fighting Knights. Racak ranks fifth in the Lynn University record books in singles victories (64) and sixth in doubles victories (58).
In his first season as an assistant in 2010, Carsuzaa helped the Fighting Knights to an 18-5 overall record and a trip to the NCAA South Regional Championship Final. The Blue & White finished with a No. 5 national ranking.
Named an All-America selection by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association three times, Racak finished his four-year career ranked sixth on Lynn’s all-time list in both singles winning percentage (.820) and doubles winning percentage (.808). In 2009, he teamed with current Fighting Knight Alex Voirin, formed one of the best doubles combinations in program history going 14-0, the school’s first unbeaten doubles team.
Named an All-American six times by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association, Carsuzaa collected the honor in singles all for years with the Blue and White while picking up the accolade in doubles as a sophomore and senior. He also won the ITA Small College Division II Fall Doubles Championship twice, teaming with fellow All-Americans Dennis Riegraf and Alessandro Sarra in 2006 and 2008, respectively. Carsuzaa went on to win the ITA ‘Super Bowl’ of Small College Tennis with Riegraf and ended the 2009 season as the top-ranked doubles tandem with Sarra. Gaining more recognition on the national stage, Carsuzaa was selected as the Southeast Region Rookie of the Year as a freshman in 2006 and named both the South Region and National Senior Player of the Year in 2009. One of the top players in Sunshine State Conference play as well, Carsuzaa was a first team all-league singles player all four years and was tabbed First Team All-SSC in doubles as a sophomore and senior and second team as a freshman and junior. He opened his career with the Knights as the SSC Freshman of the Year and capped his tenure as the SSC Player of the Year during his senior campaign. A product of Nice, France, Carsuzaa earned his degree from Lynn in 2009 and is currently working towards a Master’s of Business Administration at his alma mater.

A top performer in the Sunshine State Conference, Racak earned First Team All-SSC in singles in his final three seasons at LU. The epicenter of the Fighting Knights Athletics Department, the Count & Countess de Hoernle Sports and Cultural Center sits in the heart of the Lynn University campus. Completed in 1993, the center is the home court for the Lynn University volleyball and men’s and women’s basketball programs. Lynn’s 18 National Championship banners hang proudly from its rafters. Housing four team locker rooms and one officials locker room, two athletic training rooms and laundry facilities, the de Hoernle Center also contains offices for all of Lynn’s coaches and administrators. During volleyball and basketball games fans can relax in the retractable chairback seating on one side or sit close to the teams on the retractable bleachers. The combined seating capacity is 1,000. The front lobby is home to the Michael & Julie Chadwick Wall of National Champions, a space that has plaques recognizing the Fighting Knights National Championship teams, and six trophy cases which hold the many NAIA and NCAA individual and team honors of Lynn’s 11 programs. The de Hoernle Center is not just used for athletics; the gym floor is converted at the start of each academic year for Orientation and at each year's conclusion for Commencement. A new addition was welcomed into lobby of the de Hoernle Center in 2008, the Athletic Hall of Fame. Thirty former student-athletes and administrators are honored on the wall for their accomplishments while with the Blue and White. The first basketball game held on the floor came on Dec. 28, 1993, as the LU women downed Michigan-Dearborn 99-72. The Knights men’s team played its first game on the floor two days later, besting Findlay 103-93 on Dec. 30, 1993. The first-ever Lynn volleyball game at de Hoernle was on Sept. 12, 1996. Home to the Fighting Knights’ outdoor sports, the McCusker Sports Complex is the site of the baseball, softball, soccer and tennis teams at Lynn University and has been the host of Sunshine State Conference and NCAA National and Regional Tournaments. The only home Lynn soccer has ever known, the McCusker Sports Complex Field has seen its share of shining moments in Fighting Knights soccer history. With its plush Bermuda grass playing surface, the field is nestled on the southwest corner of Lynn’s campus. Six national championship teams have played on the soccer field formerly known as “the graveyard.” Team benches and accommodations for the media, game staging personnel and administrators are located on one side of the field with two sets of covered bleachers and a concession stand on the other side. From 1996 to 1998, the field was the place to be to witness NCAA Division II National Finals. The Lynn women took part in the 1996 NCAA championship game while the Fighting Knights men took on Cal State-Bakersfield in the 1997 title tilt. The Lynn women captured the 1998 final on the field, downing Sonoma State 3-1 on Dec. 6, 1998. Recently the men’s soccer team defeated Lander 8-0 on Nov. 10, 2005 in the NCAA Division II Quarterfinals, the second largest margin of victory in the program’s illustrious post-season history. Lynn’s baseball field is located on the southeast corner of campus, sharing a border with Military Trail and Potomac Road. Long home runs can be seen crossing mid-day traffic as the Blue and White play all of their games during the day. Recent facelifts to the field include a new scoreboard in right field with the 2009 NCAA Division II National Championship banner, new Bermuda grass infield and outfield and a crushed brick warning track. Dimensions are 315-right field, 355-right center, 405-center field, 365-left center and 325-left field. The softball field is located adjacent to the baseball field and share outfield bleachers. This field saw a program record 88 home runs sail over its fences in 2005, which are 190 down the lines and 220 to straightaway center field. The softball field received a face lift in 2006 with the possibility of a new stadium in the near future. Boasting a combined seven national championships and 12 Sunshine State Conference titles, Lynn University's men's and women's tennis programs will usher in a new era beginning in 2009 with the Perper Tennis Complex. The state-of-the-art million-dollar complex contains a total of six courts, covered chair-back stadium seating, an electronic scoreboard and is the first outdoor lighted facility on the Lynn campus. Although not on situated on campus, the Lynn men’s and women’s golf team take advantage of some of the best courses that Boca Raton has to offer . The women’s program practices at three local golf clubs, Boca Lago Country Club (www.bocalago.com), Boca Woods Country Club (www.southfloridacountryclub.com) and Boca Delray Country Club (www.bocadelray.net) while the men’s squad calls both Ocean Breeze Golf & Country Club (www.oceanbreezegolf.com) and Boca Country Club (www.bocaresort.com/golf) home.

Sunshine State Conference Founded in March of 1975, the Sunshine State Conference has risen from a single-sport organization to become the NCAA Division II “Conference of Champions.” Started as a basketball conference, The SSC has since grown steadily in sports played, membership and national prominence. A weekly check of national rankings in nearly any Division II sport proves the point, as SSC member institutions consistently find themselves ranked amongst the nation’s elite. Now with nine full members, the SSC is the proud owner of some 74 NCAA Division II National Championships in baseball, men’s basketball, men’s and women’s golf, softball, men’s and women’s tennis, men’s and women’s soccer and volleyball. The Orlando-based league recently added to its already full trophy case with Nova Southeastern University’s first women’s golf title and Lynn University claiming its first baseball national championship. The SSC currently crowns regular-season champions in volleyball, men’s and women’s soccer, men’s and women’s basketball, baseball and softball. The league also administers season-ending tournaments in men’s and women’s soccer, men’s and women’s basketball, men’s and women’s golf, men’s and women’s tennis and women’s rowing.
