SEASON OUTLOOK Every year Lynn University’s men’s soccer team is in the picture to make a play for the national championship. This season the Fighting Knights like their chances more than ever, thanks to a returning cast that includes two All-Americans and four All-Sunshine State Conference selections. Head coach John Rootes lost just a few players from a squad which advanced to its sixth consecutive NCAA Tournament but has improved the depth of every position. Whereas the past few seasons saw a dip in talent beyond the starting 11, this year’s team is opening up position battles and forcing players to be coming more versatile. “We have a dangerous team this year that is focused on the big prize,” said third-year coach Rootes. “These guys had a bad taste in their mouth after the ending to last year’s season and have recommitted themselves to being one of the best.”
Forwards •Paulo Vaz led the SSC in goals and points and was third in the nation in points/game, fourth in goals/game and eighth in assists/game •The Fighting Knights have had at least one double-digit goal scorer for 13 consecutive years and 23 of 24 years in total
Goalkeeping
“We have a ton of midfielders on the roster but their roles are split in half with attacking and defensive roles. Kyle Conrad, our second leading scorer last year, really sets the pace with his speed and natural ability to finish. I think him paired with our newcomer Ryan Birch, who is a nice attacking midfielder, really will be an offensive boost. Plus we have players like Jon Schatz, Roberto Cadihle and Tommy Guerra who are hard-working players.
•Alessandro Salvatore finished in the top-three of the SSC in goals-against average, save percentage, saves and shutouts
“Scott McCubbin, Christian Dohnert and Luke Magill really set the tone on the defensive side. Add Pedro Saona to the mix and you have four players who can win balls, whether in the air or the ground, possess and distribute to our attacking players.”
Defense •Since moving into a starting role as a sophomore, senior Joe Cundall has started all but one game in defense •Scott Gordon earned All-Sunshine State Conference Honorable Mention honors in his first season with the Blue & White despite playing in only 12 games
•Lynn had the second-highest scoring average in the nation last year behind 3.16 goals per game
•Knights defense returns three starters off a team which held opponents to 4.4 shots on goal per game
Rootes’ View…
Rootes’ View…
“There are high expectations for our forwards this season. Paulo Vaz proved last year his is one of the top goal scorers in the country but there was a bit of a drop-off after him. That has changed for the better this season and given us probably the most depth out of any position on the team.
“This team is extremely strong in the back with our strength, height and speed. Scott Gordon, arguably the best athlete in the conference, will anchor the defense for us. His smoothness distributing the ball from the back line and his ability to run opponents off the ball, not to mention is leadership qualities, are what make him such a threat.
“Harald Grocholski and Ewan Clarke are two of the players who will see time up top. Harald is very good and has a nose for scoring goals while Ewan is a bull. He’s tough to push around, is a great target and has a good touch and shot. And with some of our players being versatile, there may be times when a Stefan Wolf or Kyle Conrad sees time as a forward.”
Midfield •Kyle Conrad is 26 points shy of becoming just the fourth player in program history with 100 career points •Fighting Knights return four of five midfield starters • Scott McCubbin was second on the team with Kyle Conrad with seven assists

Rootes’ View…
“Joe Cundall is a player who just continues to get better and better every year. He has improved so much in his coverage and passing skills along with his ability to win balls in the air that he now has the versatility to switch between the outside and middle defense. These two players, along with Stefan Wolf, will be the core of the defense and be a bridge to some of our newcomers. “Eyjolfur Eyjolfsson and Brent Lawler have shown they have the stuff to compete at our level and I can’t wait to see them in real game action. Their height [Ejolfsson is 6-foot-4 and Lawler is 6-foot-2] and strength are major assets and will make teams think twice about getting physical in the box and attempting to win aerial balls.”
•Salvatore earned All-SSC accolades last season making it seven straight seasons LU has placed a goalkeeper on an All-SSC team •Back-ups Philipp Uttikal and Matt DiCerbo have combined for 17 starts between them at prior institutions
Rootes’ View… “We have a solid group of goalkeepers led by Alessandro Salvatore, who could be the best keeper in the country, but I’d like to have better depth here. Alessandro is such a force around the net, using his length to cut down on angles and leaping ability to turn away shots in the air. “Philipp Uttikal has great technique and quickness and sets the program up for better depth in the future along with Matt DiCerbo and Robbie Hannon.”
Schedule •Lynn faces three preseason nationally-ranked teams: Tampa (5th), Rollins (10th) and Anderson (14th) •The Blue & White hit the road their first two weekends of the season for the first time since 2006 when they travel to Memphis to battle Lambuth and Christian Brothers and then go up to square off against UNC-Pembroke and Anderson (S.C.) •The Knights play just seven of their 17 games at home but get some of their toughest opponents in Boca Raton, seeing Rollins, Saint Leo and Tampa at the McCusker Sports Complex
Rootes’ View… “This is a very balanced schedule for us. We are immediately tested at Christian Brothers the opening weekend then face two more tough teams in UNC-Pembroke and Anderson. Not to mention we go up against West Florida, who is perennially ranked in the top-25 and has been a tough game for us in the past. “All of these contests will prepare us for the conference, which is especially tough this year. I think there is a lot of parity and not a lot of difference in talent between the top and bottom teams. Luckily for us, some of our opponents who have caused us some headaches in the past have to come to our field.”
John Rootes enters his third season as head coach of the Lynn University men’s soccer team. During his brief time with the Fighting Knights he has posted a 32-6-1 (.833) record while claiming a Sunshine State Conference regular season and tournament title and earning two NCAA Tournament bids. These numbers add to an already distinguished career which has seen him win a national championship, take four schools, Lynn, Savannah College of Art and Design, Clayton State and Southern New Hampshire, to the postseason and record a 312-101-23 (.742) career mark. Losing five All-Americans in 2009 would cause a lot of teams to see a dip in production but Rootes was able to retool quickly and keep the Blue & White soccer program as one of the premiere soccer teams in the country. Despite not being ranked in the top-25 in the preseason, Lynn jumped out to a 10-0 start to ascend to the No. 1 ranking. The Knights closed out the season ranked 23rd nationally with 14-4-1 overall record and their fifth consecutive NCAA Tournament appearance. Not daunted by inheriting one of the top NCAA Division II programs in the country, he led the Fighting Knights to the best record in the nation (18-2) in 2008 while winning Sunshine State Conference regular season and tournament titles. On top of helping the Blue & White reach the NCAA Tournament for the fourth consecutive year and 10th overall, he oversaw a five-man senior class that earned All-America accolades and successfully converted defensive midfielder Jean Alexandre into one of the top forwards in the nation. Alexandre later became the highest drafted student-athlete in Lynn history when he was the 12th overall pick by Real Salt Lake in the Major League Soccer Superdraft. Formerly the head coach at Savannah College of Art and Design, Rootes became the fourth coach in program history on March 31, 2008. He brought with him a proven track record, one in which he averaged just over 14 wins a season and reached the postseason 11 times, winning the 1989 NCAA Division II National Championship at SNHU. Amassing a 47-26-2 (.627) record in four years at SCAD, Rootes led the Bees to the NAIA Region XIV Tournament finals in three consecutive seasons. In just his second year at Savannah, he established the program record for wins (13-4-1) while earning the program’s first national ranking (as high as no. 18) and postseason appearance. A new challenge awaited Rootes at Clayton State as he took over a program that had only two winning seasons prior to his arrival. Three years into his tenure, the Lakers posted an 18-3-1 record and earned their first Peach Belt Championship and NCAA Regional bid. CSU would go on to record a 69-38-9 (.634) mark during his six-year stay, winning two conference championships and securing a pair of NCAA bids. During his time at SNHU, Rootes compiled a 169-30-11 (.831) record and elevated the program to national prominence. In 10 seasons, the Penmen were consistently ranked in the Intercollegiate Soccer Association of America National Top 10 and earned three 20-win seasons, six NCAA Division II Tournament bids, four appearances in the Elite Eight and an NCAA National Championship in 1989. Nine of his players were named NSCAA All-Americans and 15 have gone on to professional soccer careers.

Prior to becoming a head coach in New Hampshire, Rootes worked as the senior assistant coach under I.M. Ibrahim at NCAA Division I powerhouse Clemson University. While with the Tigers, he helped the school to the 1987 National Championship and the 1988 World Collegiate Championship. As a player, Rootes was a four-year starter for legendary coach Barry Barto at Philadelphia College of Textiles & Sciences (now Philadelphia University) and the University of Nevada, Las Vegas. Rootes led Textile to an undefeated season and a No. 1-ranking in the final coaches' poll in 1980, and guided UNLV to its first NCAA Tournament bid in 1983. Rootes was honored twice as an NSCAA All-West striker and was a member of the 1984 United States Amateur team. He also played two years of professional soccer for the Boston Storm in 1994 and 1995. Rootes holds a U.S. Soccer Federation "A" license, an NSCAA Advanced National Diploma and a master's degree in sport science. Rootes and his wife, Alicia, have two children, Savannah (10) and Thomas (7).

The epicenter of the Fighting Knights Athletics Department, the Count & Countess de Hoernle Sports and Cultural Center sits in the heart of the Lynn University campus. Completed in 1993, the center is the home court for the Lynn University volleyball and men’s and women’s basketball programs. Lynn’s 18 National Championship banners hang proudly from its rafters. Housing four team locker rooms and one officials locker room, two athletic training rooms and laundry facilities, the de Hoernle Center also contains offices for all of Lynn’s coaches and administrators. During volleyball and basketball games fans can relax in the retractable chairback seating on one side or sit close to the teams on the retractable bleachers. The combined seating capacity is 1,000. The front lobby is home to the Michael & Julie Chadwick Wall of National Champions, a space that has plaques recognizing the Fighting Knights National Championship teams, and six trophy cases which hold the many NAIA and NCAA individual and team honors of Lynn’s 11 programs. The de Hoernle Center is not just used for athletics; the gym floor is converted at the start of each academic year for Orientation and at each year's conclusion for Commencement. A new addition was welcomed into lobby of the de Hoernle Center in 2008, the Athletic Hall of Fame. Thirty former student-athletes and administrators are honored on the wall for their accomplishments while with the Blue and White. The first basketball game held on the floor came on Dec. 28, 1993, as the LU women downed Michigan-Dearborn 99-72. The Knights men’s team played its first game on the floor two days later, besting Findlay 103-93 on Dec. 30, 1993. The first-ever Lynn volleyball game at de Hoernle was on Sept. 12, 1996. Home to the Fighting Knights’ outdoor sports, the McCusker Sports Complex is the site of the baseball, softball, soccer and tennis teams at Lynn University and has been the host of Sunshine State Conference and NCAA National and Regional Tournaments. The only home Lynn soccer has ever known, the McCusker Sports Complex Field has seen its share of shining moments in Fighting Knights soccer history. With its plush Bermuda grass playing surface, the field is nestled on the southwest corner of Lynn’s campus. Six national championship teams have played on the soccer field formerly known as “the graveyard.” Team benches and accommodations for the media, game staging personnel and administrators are located on one side of the field with two sets of covered bleachers and a concession stand on the other side. From 1996 to 1998, the field was the place to be to witness NCAA Division II National Finals. The Lynn women took part in the 1996 NCAA championship game while the Fighting Knights men took on Cal State-Bakersfield in the 1997 title tilt. The Lynn women captured the 1998 final on the field, downing Sonoma State 3-1 on Dec. 6, 1998. Recently the men’s soccer team defeated Lander 8-0 on Nov. 10, 2005 in the NCAA Division II Quarterfinals, the second largest margin of victory in the program’s illustrious post-season history. Lynn’s baseball field is located on the southeast corner of campus, sharing a border with Military Trail and Potomac Road. Long home runs can be seen crossing mid-day traffic as the Blue and White play all of their games during the day. Recent facelifts to the field include a new scoreboard in right field with the 2009 NCAA Division II National Championship banner, new Bermuda grass infield and outfield and a crushed brick warning track. Dimensions are 315-right field, 355-right center, 405-center field, 365-left center and 325-left field. The softball field is located adjacent to the baseball field and share outfield bleachers. This field saw a program record 88 home runs sail over its fences in 2005, which are 190 down the lines and 220 to straightaway center field. The softball field received a face lift in 2006 with the possibility of a new stadium in the near future. Boasting a combined seven national championships and 12 Sunshine State Conference titles, Lynn University's men's and women's tennis programs will usher in a new era beginning in 2009 with the Perper Tennis Complex. The state-of-the-art million-dollar complex contains a total of six courts, covered chair-back stadium seating, an electronic scoreboard and is the first outdoor lighted facility on the Lynn campus. Although not on situated on campus, the Lynn men’s and women’s golf team take advantage of some of the best courses that Boca Raton has to offer . The women’s program practices at three local golf clubs, Boca Lago Country Club (www.bocalago.com), Boca Woods Country Club (www.southfloridacountryclub.com) and Boca Delray Country Club (www.bocadelray.net) while the men’s squad calls both Ocean Breeze Golf & Country Club (www.oceanbreezegolf.com) and Boca Country Club (www.bocaresort.com/golf) home.

Sunshine State Conference Founded in March of 1975, the Sunshine State Conference has risen from a single-sport organization to become the NCAA Division II “Conference of Champions.” Started as a basketball conference, The SSC has since grown steadily in sports played, membership and national prominence. A weekly check of national rankings in nearly any Division II sport proves the point, as SSC member institutions consistently find themselves ranked amongst the nation’s elite. Now with nine full members, the SSC is the proud owner of some 74 NCAA Division II National Championships in baseball, men’s basketball, men’s and women’s golf, softball, men’s and women’s tennis, men’s and women’s soccer and volleyball. The Orlando-based league recently added to its already full trophy case with Nova Southeastern University’s first women’s golf title and Lynn University claiming its first baseball national championship. The SSC currently crowns regular-season champions in volleyball, men’s and women’s soccer, men’s and women’s basketball, baseball and softball. The league also administers season-ending tournaments in men’s and women’s soccer, men’s and women’s basketball, men’s and women’s golf, men’s and women’s tennis and women’s rowing.
