SEASON PREVIEW The 2011 edition of the Lynn University softball team returns its top two hitters and pitchers but after that, a virtually all new supporting cast will have to contribute for the Fighting Knights to return to the NCAA Tournament. Among the returners is senior All-American Brittany Gross, who had arguably the greatest offensive season in Lynn history as a junior, while newcomer Mandi Brown will add some much needed speed, power and defense to the Blue & White’s lineup. “We possess a lot of speed from top to bottom and should be much better defensively this year,” said third-year head coach Mandy Harris. “With more depth than in recent years, we have a lot of combinations that we can use and that is really exciting as a coach.” Outfield A pair of seniors, Brittany Gross and Katrina Lavadan, will anchor the outfield with fellow senior Jordan Angel and freshman Megan Mayfield fighting it out for the final spot. An All-American as a junior, Gross will set the table offensively for the Fighting
Knights at the leadoff spot. Last season she hit a program-record .435 with 83 base hits, both of which led the SSC. “Brittany has been a sparkplug for us offensively the last three years. She has great speed and tracks down everything hit to her in right field.” Lavadan should see the bulk of her time hitting just behind Gross in order to advance the runner. Last season she did just that leading the Knights with 14 sacrifice hits, but she also hit for power and average batting .378 with a team-high .451 slugging percentage. “Trina had a great year last season coming off an injury. She is fully healthy now and we are excited to have her back in centerfield and hitting behind Brittany.” Mayfield comes to Boca after earning three letters at Jensen Beach High School, the same school that produced Gross. As a senior, the lefty slapper led the Falcons to the State Semifinals.
“Megan will see most of the time in left field but she has the ability to play right field as well. She is very quick and will learn a lot from Brittany and Trina on the base paths and in the outfield. A multipurpose player, Angel can play every position on the diamond except in the battery. Last season, Jordan was consistent with the bat and showed good plate discipline hitting .288 and drawing 18 walks. “Jordan allows us to have many combinations defensively with her versatility. She is a great leader on the field, does everything that she is asked and is just a joy to coach.” Infield The Fighting Knights will feature an entirely different infield from last season but should be much better defensively. Up the middle, junior transfer Mandi Brown will lead the Blue & White at shortstop with freshman Anne Marie Van Casteren at second. A transfer out of Santa Fe CC, Brown was a pain for opposing pitchers, hitting .324
Marianne Johnson Katrina Lavadan
SEASON PREVIEW and earning All-Mid Florida Conference honors as a sophomore. She will hit primarily from the third spot and should get a lot of RBI opportunities batting behind Gross and Lavadan. “Mandi comes from a great winning tradition at Santa Fe and knows what it takes to be successful at this level. She fields everything that is hit in her direction, has a good eye at the plate and puts the ball in play.” Another local product out of Palm Beach Central High School, Van Casteren batted .406 as a senior and was named an AllCounty selection. For her efforts, she was also picked to play in the Florida State Senior All-Star Game. “Anne Marie had a great fall season making the transition from third to second base. She has good speed and with her improvement in the weight room she should be able to provide some pop with the bat.” Kasey Murray will handle the hot corner while Callie Darlin will be at first base when they are not in the circle. Murray is another newcomer that can hit for both power and average. In her senior season at Land O’Lakes, the right-hander batted .390 and hit a home run in the ASA National Championship Game. Freshmen Marcella Carrozza and Carisa Cook can play both corner infield positions as well and should see time when either Murray or Darlin are pitching. Pitchers After being thrown into the fire last season as a freshman, Darlin will lead a trio of pitchers for the Fighting Knights as a sophomore. Returning from injury inside the circle will also be redshirt junior Marianne Johnson while Murray will also hurl for the Blue & White. Darlin was the ace of the Fighting Knights’
staff last season with a 2.37 ERA in 180.1 innings. The flamethrower completed 22 of 26 of her starts and posted four shutouts. “Callie is super competitive and has improved significantly since stepping onto campus. With injuries last season, she pitched in several big games for us and that experience will only help her this year.” More of a control artist, Johnson made one appearance before a season-ending injury but threw in 91 innings as a sophomore in 2009. “We are so glad to get Marianne back from injury and it is great to have her healthy. She had several good games before going down and her experience will benefit our young pitching staff.” A strikeout pitcher for the Fighting Gators, Murray fanned 160 batters in just 126 innings of work and earned All-Conference honors. Murray features a lot of spin on all of her pitches but also has the ability to throw one by hitters. “Like Callie, Kasey is very versatile and she comes from a great summer program, the Tampa Mustangs, who won the club National Championship last year. She knows how to win and that will help us get to the next level as a team.” Catcher Providing some power and leadership behind the plate will be junior-transfer Danielle O’Rourke. Out of Endicott, N.Y., O’Rourke led Tompkins Cortland CC to its first-ever National Championship in 2009. That season, she was named a JUCO First-Team All-American with four home runs and 33 RBIs while hitting .388. O’Rourke holds the TC3 record for career home runs, RBI and walks. “Dani is very solid behind the plate and the pitchers really like throwing to her. She also blocks really well and has a
strong throwing arm as she threw out every base runner in the fall.” Schedule Prior to going through the rigors of a tough SSC schedule, Lynn will take on several of the nation’s top teams, including North Georgia who was ranked No. 1 in the final regular season poll. “We made this schedule on purpose in order to prepare us for our conference, which is among the toughest in the country. Playing teams like North Georgia, who advanced to the Elite Eight last year, will be a great test for our team before entering SSC play.” The Knights open the season at Palm Beach Atlantic on Feb. 9 before heading north for the Hughston Sports Clinic Classic in Columbus, Ga. from February 1113. There the Knights take on the Saints twice, as well as Ohio Valley and Columbus State. LU will have its home and conference opener against Tampa in a three-game tilt on February 19-20. Following the three games with the Spartans, Lynn will hit the Gulf Coast for the Eckerd College Invitational on February 25-27. Clashing with the Knights in Clearwater will be familiar foes Tampa and Eckerd, as well as West Florida, Flagler and UMass-Lowell. Lynn then returns home to face Mercyhurst and Saint Leo before going back up to Georgia to play eight games in four days from March 9-12. Another twinbill against PBA, this time at home on March 19, will be the final nonconference tilt for the Fighting Knights before getting into the thick of conference play.
Harris’ tenure as an assistant at GCSU and Wingate was highlighted by consistent winning. She helped build the Lady Bobcats into a nationally ranked program which averaged 40 wins per season, claiming one Peach Belt Conference Tournament Championship and three NCAA appearances, including an NCAA World Series nod in 2006.
M
andy Harris is in third season at the helm of the Fighting Knights softball program. Prior to coming to Lynn, she spent three years at Georgia College & State University and will be able to draw upon her seven years as an assistant coach and four years as a player at the NCAA Division II level. This past season, Harris led the Blue & White to a 24-31 record with seven wins in the Sunshine State Conference, Lynn’s most since 2006. Under her tutelage, Brittany Gross became Lynn’s first AllAmerica selection since 2005 and the Knights shattered several single game records for hits and runs scored. The 2010 season also marked the first time the Knights took a series victory over conference rival Florida Southern. In her first season with the Knights in 2009, Harris posted a 21-29 record and led the Blue and White to their most Sunshine State Conference victories in three years. She collected key wins over perennial powers Barry and Columbus State while earning her first win over a ranked opponent with a victory over her former squad, No. 20 Georgia College & State. A strong defensive squad that was unselfish at the plate, the 2009 Knights posted top-five program numbers in seven different statistical categories including walks, on base percentage, stolen bases, sacrifice flies and hits, assists and fielding percentage.
With Georgia College & State, she headed up the Lady Bobcats recruiting efforts while taking charge of hitting and infielding. During her time in Milledgeville, Ga., Harris oversaw the development of five All-America selections, eight All-PBC honorees and two PBC Player of the Year recipients. In addition, GCSU reached a national ranking as high as No. 2 and stayed in the NFCA Top-25 for eight of the 12 weeks polled her final season. While at Wingate, Harris held hitting and outfield coaching duties as well as overseeing the Bulldogs’ strength and conditioning program. With Harris on the bench, Wingate averaged over 32 wins a season and advance to the South Atlantic Conference Tournament four consecutive seasons. The Bulldogs twice led the SAC in team batting average (.324 in 2005 and .292 in 2003) while claiming a SAC Tournament title and NCAA Tournament berth in 2003, the first in program history. A strong player herself, Harris was a four-year starter at shortstop at Francis Marion University. As a senior, she earned All-PBC and Patriot Most Valuable Player honors after batting .384. Harris was a threetime member of the PBC Presidential Honor Roll and was selected to the CoSIDA/ESPN the Magazine Academic All-District team. The Plano, Texas, native is a certified personal trainer from the American College of Sports Medicine. Harris holds a Masters of Business Administration from Wingate (2004) and a Bachelor of Science in Psychology from Francis Marion (2001).
ington. She oversaw the Seahawks' pitching staff as well as heading up the team's recruiting efforts, budgeting, community service and clinics. Prior to her time at UNC-Wilmington, Bennett served on the staff at Mount Olive for one season as an assistant. Under the guidance of Bennett, the Trojan pitching staff lowered its earned run average from 5.13 to 1.70, 18th lowest among all NCAA Division II institutions while helping the squad post a schoolrecord 39 victories. In addition, sophomore Jenny Jackson was selected the Carolina-Virginia Athletic Conference Player-of-the-Year after ranking seventh nationally in ERA (0.87).
Brittany Bennett is in her third year as an assistant coach with the Lynn University softball team. She serves as the pitching coach and will also work with the catchers, outfield and hitting as well as coordinating recruiting and alumni relations. This past season, her outfielders put together two of the finest offensive seasons in Lynn history as Brittany Gross set the Lynn record for batting average, hits and runs in a season. With the Knights, Bennett's pitching staff allowed the second fewest hits in program history in 2009 and held opponents to their lowest batting average in four seasons. Bennett came to the Blue and White following a stint as assistant coach at Division I North Carolina-Wilm-

Bennett spent two seasons as a graduate assistant at Southern Arkansas from 2004-06 where she worked with both the hitters and pitchers. The Lady Muleriders produced the Gulf South Conference's Pitcher-of-the-Year in Kayla King in 2006. No stranger to the Division II game, Bennett was a two-year letterwinner at Southern Arkansas. A member of the Gulf South Conference Academic Honor Roll in 2004, she holds the school record for fewest errors in a career with six. Originally from Longview, Texas, Bennett earned her Bachelor's of Business Administration in Computer Information Systems from Southern Arkansas in 2004 and received her Master's of Science degree in Kinesiology at SAU in 2006.

The epicenter of the Fighting Knights Athletics Department, the Count & Countess de Hoernle Sports and Cultural Center sits in the heart of the Lynn University campus. Completed in 1993, the center is the home court for the Lynn University volleyball and men’s and women’s basketball programs. Lynn’s 18 National Championship banners hang proudly from its rafters. Housing four team locker rooms and one officials locker room, two athletic training rooms and laundry facilities, the de Hoernle Center also contains offices for all of Lynn’s coaches and administrators. During volleyball and basketball games fans can relax in the retractable chairback seating on one side or sit close to the teams on the retractable bleachers. The combined seating capacity is 1,000. The front lobby is home to the Michael & Julie Chadwick Wall of National Champions, a space that has plaques recognizing the Fighting Knights National Championship teams, and six trophy cases which hold the many NAIA and NCAA individual and team honors of Lynn’s 11 programs. The de Hoernle Center is not just used for athletics; the gym floor is converted at the start of each academic year for Orientation and at each year's conclusion for Commencement. A new addition was welcomed into lobby of the de Hoernle Center in 2008, the Athletic Hall of Fame. Thirty former student-athletes and administrators are honored on the wall for their accomplishments while with the Blue and White. The first basketball game held on the floor came on Dec. 28, 1993, as the LU women downed Michigan-Dearborn 99-72. The Knights men’s team played its first game on the floor two days later, besting Findlay 103-93 on Dec. 30, 1993. The first-ever Lynn volleyball game at de Hoernle was on Sept. 12, 1996. Home to the Fighting Knights’ outdoor sports, the McCusker Sports Complex is the site of the baseball, softball, soccer and tennis teams at Lynn University and has been the host of Sunshine State Conference and NCAA National and Regional Tournaments. The only home Lynn soccer has ever known, the McCusker Sports Complex Field has seen its share of shining moments in Fighting Knights soccer history. With its plush Bermuda grass playing surface, the field is nestled on the southwest corner of Lynn’s campus. Six national championship teams have played on the soccer field formerly known as “the graveyard.” Team benches and accommodations for the media, game staging personnel and administrators are located on one side of the field with two sets of covered bleachers and a concession stand on the other side. From 1996 to 1998, the field was the place to be to witness NCAA Division II National Finals. The Lynn women took part in the 1996 NCAA championship game while the Fighting Knights men took on Cal State-Bakersfield in the 1997 title tilt. The Lynn women captured the 1998 final on the field, downing Sonoma State 3-1 on Dec. 6, 1998. Recently the men’s soccer team defeated Lander 8-0 on Nov. 10, 2005 in the NCAA Division II Quarterfinals, the second largest margin of victory in the program’s illustrious post-season history. Lynn’s baseball field is located on the southeast corner of campus, sharing a border with Military Trail and Potomac Road. Long home runs can be seen crossing mid-day traffic as the Blue and White play all of their games during the day. Recent facelifts to the field include a new scoreboard in right field with the 2009 NCAA Division II National Championship banner, new Bermuda grass infield and outfield and a crushed brick warning track. Dimensions are 315-right field, 355-right center, 405-center field, 365-left center and 325-left field. The softball field is located adjacent to the baseball field and share outfield bleachers. This field saw a program record 88 home runs sail over its fences in 2005, which are 190 down the lines and 220 to straightaway center field. The softball field received a face lift in 2006 with the possibility of a new stadium in the near future. Boasting a combined seven national championships and 12 Sunshine State Conference titles, Lynn University's men's and women's tennis programs will usher in a new era beginning in 2009 with the Perper Tennis Complex. The state-of-the-art million-dollar complex contains a total of six courts, covered chair-back stadium seating, an electronic scoreboard and is the first outdoor lighted facility on the Lynn campus. Although not on situated on campus, the Lynn men’s and women’s golf team take advantage of some of the best courses that Boca Raton has to offer . The women’s program practices at three local golf clubs, Boca Lago Country Club (www.bocalago.com), Boca Woods Country Club (www.southfloridacountryclub.com) and Boca Delray Country Club (www.bocadelray.net) while the men’s squad calls both Ocean Breeze Golf & Country Club (www.oceanbreezegolf.com) and Boca Country Club (www.bocaresort.com/golf) home.
